7. In spite of its imperfections, Americans continue to believe in public education as the ladder to success in life. Their belief has been confirmed by experience. In 1900, for example, less than 10 percent of young Americans entered college. Today over 30 percent of the total population of Americans over 21 have attended college. There are about 10 million students attending college now, about seven times more than forty years ago, and there are some 3,000 different colleges and universities to choose from. Today many parents who were not able to attend college when they were young have the satisfaction of seeing their sons and daughters attend.

Inside the car were two young girls on the passenger seat — but no driver. Paul stopped quickly, jumped in front of the sports car and tried to stop it, pushing against the front of the car. Another man who was standing nearby got into the car and put on the handbrake, saving the girls from injury. It was at this point that Paul noticed his own car rolling slowly down the hill and going too fast for him to stop it. It crashed into a bus at the bottom of the hill and was so badly damaged thatit had to be pulled away to a garage. As if this was not bad enough, Paul now found he had no one to blame. He was so busy chasing his car that he didn't get the name of the driver of the sports car, who just came out of thesupermarket and drove away without realizing what had happened.11. What was worse, it was already dark when I arrived at his house. I soon found the key Vemon gave me could not unlock either the front door or the back door. I was getting desperate. I kept thinking of what Vemon would say when he came back.I was just going to give up when I noticed that one bedroom window was slightly open. I found a barrel and pushed it under the window. As the barrel was very heavy, I made a lot of noise. But in the end, I managed to climb up and open the window.I actually had one leg inside the bedroom when I suddenly realized that someone was shining a torch up at me. I looked down and saw a policeman and an old lady, one of Vemon's neighbors. “What are you doing up there?" said the policeman. Feeling like a complete fool, I replied, “I was just going to feed Mr. Davies's birds."15. Why couldn't the man open the door?16. Why did the man feel desperate?17. Why did the man feel like a fool?Passage ThreeWhen Iraqi troops blew up hundreds of Kuwaiti oil well at the end of Gulf War, scientists feared an environmental disaster. Would black powder and the smoke from the fires circle the globe and block out the sun? Many said “n o way’’--- rain would wash the black powder from the atmosphere. But in America, air- sampling balloons have detected high concentrations of particles similar to those c ollected in Kuwait. Now that the fire’s out, scientists are turning their attention to yet another threat --- the oil that didn't catch fire. It has formed huge lakes in the Kuwaiti desert. They trap insects and birds, and poison a variety of other desert animals and plants. The only good news is that the oil lakes have not affected the underground water resources. So far, the oil has not been absorbed because of the hard sand just below the surface.Nothing, however, stops the oil from evaporating. The resulting poisonous gases are choking nearby residents.Officials are trying to organize a quick cleanup, but they are not sure how to do it. Onepossibility is to burn the oil. Get those black-powder detectors ready.18. What were the scientists worried about soon after the Gulf War?19. What was the good news for scientists?20. What are the officials trying to do at the moment?1-10: CADCABBCDB11-20: CDAAABBDDC。

EF Level 09Unit 1SALLY: So, what did you think of the movie, Jen?We can also say, "Did you enjoy the movie?"JEN: I thought it was all right. I'm not a big fan of war movies, but this one seemed realistic and interesting. How about you? What'd you think? This means that the person doesn't really like war movies.SALLY: I thought it was brilliant. To me it was more than just a war movie, it was complex and profound. The opposite of complex is simple.JEN: Really? I agree that it was interesting, but profound? I don't know about that. I mean, it was OK, but still it's a war movie. I'd rather see a movie that has more of a story.I’d rather: We could also say, "I'd prefer to see..."SALLY: But I think this movie did have a very good story, about human nature, not just about war.JEN: Really? Human nature?Really: We can use this kind of question to express surprise, doubt or disagreement.SALLY: So many of the characters in the movie thought that the war was terrible and they kept trying to avoid fighting. I think I was in the mood for (more of ) an exciting movie today.I'm in the mood for is another way of saying I feel like... OR I want to...SALLY: I see what you mean. You're not scared of speaking in front of a big group? What's the largest group you've spoken in front of?JEN: No, I think it's a piece of cake, as long as I have something interesting to talk about. If something is a piece of cake, it is very easy to do.KIRSTEN: Well, I don't think the topic is boring, I just get nervous about being in the spotlight like that. This is an expression used to describe a situation when everyone is paying attention to you.JEN: Hmm. But, I do exchange gifts with my friends. Are you a spiritual person? Do you often think about religion and the soul?ERICA:I guess for a lot of people Christmas isn't much of a religious holiday anymore, is it?JESSICA: Well, the world is changing. A lot of traditional customs and practices are altering or disappearing. What traditional customs do you practice? What customs are not important to you?ERICA: Do you think religion will cease to be important?cease: This means stop.JESSICA: Maybe, but regligion plays a big part in so many peoples lives. Be a Good Gesture User!
• A gesture is a form of non-verbal communication in which visible body actions communicate particular messages, either in place of speech or together and in parallel with spoken words.
Nonverbal Skill
Think about the following questions and discuss with each other.
When having conversations with others, have you ever thought of using proper gestures? What are the indications of different gestures? How can you use them as an auxiliary means to extend your right meaning?
Were mine, of my own country.
Now the dark waters at the bow Fold back, like earth against the plow; Foam brightens like the dogwood now
At home, in my own country.
The followings are some examples of gestures: ● Okay, made by connecting the thumb and forefinger in a circle and holding the other fingers straight, may signal the word okay; especially as a diving signal. The same gesture is offensive in parts of southern Europe and South America. ● Check, please. This gesture, used to mean that a dinner patron wishes to pay the bill and depart, is executed by touching the index finger and thumb together and “writing” a checkmark, circle, or wavy line (as if signing one’s name) in the air. ● Air kiss conveys meanings similar to kissing, but is performed without making body contact.
