新编大学英语文化阅读教程1教师用书Unit 7Warm-upStep 1 Talking about the pictures1)Football (soccer), table tennis, badminton, video games, watching TV,drinking tea, eating out, shopping, hiking, Karaoke, bowling, chess,Tai Chi, calligraphy, flying kites, mahjong, etc.2)My favorite leisure activity is playing table tennis. For me, this is the perfectcombination of moderate exercise and social activity. It is the best way for me to relax, and I can completely switch off by chatting with my friends during the sport activity.Step 2 BrainstormingUSA:Football, baseball, basketball, hockey, shopping, exercise, watching movies / TV, bowling, yoga, arts and crafts, etc.Japan:Eating out, road trips, jogging / fitness, reading books and manga, football (soccer), baseball, video games, watching TV, etc.Russia:Hockey, visiting amusement parks, swimming, fishing, chess, BBQ, wrestling, boxing, etc.UK:Football (soccer), cricket, rugby, shopping, darts,BBQ, watching TV, eating out, travel, etc.Reading 1Language focus1.idle2.temptation3.aesthetic4.signify / signified5.receptive6.Calligraphy7.morality8.relaxation9.adheres to / adhered to10.l onging forGlobal understanding1)cultured man2)adhere to3)moral values4)aesthetic5)principle or law of nature6)unoccupied spirit7)free and leisurely8)harmonious9)governanceDetailed understanding1.B2.C3.A4.D5.DCultural thinking1)Yes, I think the phenomenon still exists, although rare. Doing an activity formoral or personal development is important in traditional Chinese culture. That’s why some people take classes for calligraphy, painting or poetry. But my day-to-day leisure activities are for relaxation and enjoyment, rather than personal or moral cultivation.2)Exercise and sports are my main leisure activities. During my spare time, I amusually involved in leisure activities, such as playing Chinese chess or doing jogging with my friends. One of the reasons why I like these activities is that they help take some weight off my mind when I felt burned out from school. These activities allow me to have some fun with my friends, without feeling the pressure to “perform” or “be the best.”Reading 2Language focus1.affordable2.revolution3.illuminate4.demonstration5.narrating6.subscription7.canvas8.literacy9.gathering10.f aresGlobal understanding1)community-based2)fairs3)social class4)members-only5)occupations6)affordable7)mass production and schemes8)literacy and income9)subscriptionDetailed understanding1.B2.A3.C4.A5.DCultural thinkingIt’s good to manage your time, making a good balance between leisure activity and study. I try to say “no” sometimes because I know I cannot do everything. I also try to plan some fun activities for my leisure time. This helps me to finish my tasks and work more efficiently.I make a “to do” list for my study each day and stick to it. But if I can’t do everything on the list, I will d o it the day after. I know it’s important to spend time taking care of my health, so I try to get regular exercises, such as running and swimming. If I can do some of these sports activities every day, I will feel proud of myself. My counselor gives me helpful suggestions on study and leisure activities balance. She tells me to start with small changes which can make a big difference, for example, going to bed 30 minutes earlier than usual, or avoiding playing video games after 10 p.m. This kind of small changes can help me rest and make me feel more energetic the next day.Integrated thinking1There are many examples of this. The Book of Change, Laozi, The Analects of Confucius, Zhuangzi, The Book of Odes and The Songs of Chu are all underpinned by an appreciation of leisure. In many cases the authors celebrated the leisure time directly. The Eastern Jin Period poet Tao Yuanming celebrated nature and leisure in his wonderful poems. Song Dynasty Poet Zhu Xi wrote poem Tea Stove (Cha Zao) ,recording his relaxing experience of drinking tea with friends on a big rock in the middle of Nine-bend River (Jiu Qu Xi) in Fujian. Su Shi, a poet of the Song Dynasty, wrote about the importance of learning how to appreciate leisure time. Furthermore, in the 20th century, Lin Yutang wrote about the feeling of contentment from being close to nature.2A factor that may impact the development of leisure activities is the accessibility to educational resources, such as libraries and schools of all kinds.Another important factor is the accessibility to public amenities, such as parks, swimming pools, ice skating rinks and music halls. In general, availability is key, because it encourages people to start an activity.Government support, at any level, can be important, especially if it is difficult for private enterprises to earn profits from the supply of these resources and amenities.3Science and technology are influencing how we spend our “down time.” In the future technologies will influence how we spend leisure time in two ways.First, new technologies allow us to engage in online leisure activities that would normally require a short trip in the past. Shopping is an example. We can buy anything online, whether it’s food or flat-pack furniture. We can stream entertainment at home, whether it’s our favorite show or a concert and don’t need to go out and share a public space with other people.Second, technology will make leisure activities more like a profession. In professional sports, for example, the data of our movements is recorded and usedto analyze and improve performance, but non-professionals (“prosumers”) are buying wearable electronic goods for the same purpose. For these reasons, leisure might look and feel very different in the future.Culture mosaic1 Learning, connecting and eating1)Table tennis, badminton, basketball, football, Karaoke, mahjong, a stroll inthe park, dancing, reading, movie watching.2)Due to globalization, there are quite a lot of similarities. Playing basketball isextremely popular in both the US and China. Then there are activities such as reading, watching movies and eating out, which are universally appealing. There are of course some differences. Public dancing and mahjong are examples of popular activities in China that are not mainstream in the US.Likewise, baking for fun and barbecuing would not be considered traditionally popular leisure activities in China.2 Hollywood looks to Chinese culture1)China produces a lot of high-quality films and TV series. The biggest overseasmarket for Chinese films and TV is Southeast Asia, mainly due to that region’s identification with Chinese culture. However, there are plenty of examples of films and TV shows gaining fans in other parts of the world, for example South Korea, Japan and the United States. Examples of popular series and filmsinclude The Legend of Zhen Huan and Hero, which provide a window onto Chinese culture and history. These films and TV dramas appeal to overseas audience for two reasons. First, they have complex narrations and scripts that are based on the real lives of ancient Chinese people. Second, they offer perspectives that help curious foreign viewers to know Chinese history and culture.2) In order to draw a larger overseas audience, the Chinese film industry and the government might take following measures.Firstly, one way to ensure this is through collaboration with overseas producers.A growing number of blockbuster films are co-produced by Chinese companies and foreign producers. These films exemplify how talents from different cultural backgrounds could bring out impressive artwork. The early 2000s martial arts film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was an example of a highly successful collaborative effort between China and the United States. The score of this film earned its reputation for its combination of Chinese instruments and western music.Secondly, to gain popularity around the world, Chinese films and TV shows should identify what themes and stories hold appeal overseas. Themes of love, justice and survival are always the filmgoers’ favorites, but they need to reflect the characters that Chinese value, such as loyalty and bravery. Take Peter Chan’s movie Leap as an example, it depicts the spirit of the women’s volleyball team and their perseverance to win the Olympic gold medal. To sum up, well-selected themes and co-production mode of making films will help Chinese films attract more audiences outside China.3 The colorful history of kitesTea drinking:Tea has been cultivated, drunk, written about and appreciated in China for millennia. It reached Europe in the 15th century through European traders and explorers. The upper class in Europe soon adopted the fashion of Tea drinking which became very popular in 18th century Britain. Meanwhile, tea cultivation also spread to other places via British traders, for example, people started planting tea in India and Sri Lanka in the 19th century.Firecrackers on festive occasions:Although firecrackers are banned in some countries and regions, they remain a popular way to celebrate. The tradition started in China around 2000 years ago. Today, they are used to usher in Chinese New Year wherever Chinese communities are found. Firecrackers are also used at festivals such as Diwali in India and among the Indian community, and even during Halloween in Ireland.。

Dell showed his genius in the computer world and business field when he was a young boy. He began to sell newspaper subscriptions in high school. At the age of 18, Dell went to the University of Texas where he started selling custom-made personal computers and components from his dorm room. With $1,000 startup capital and an innovative idea (selling computer systems directly to customers) in 1984, Dell set up his business and dropped out of university. In 1992, he became the youngest CEO ever to earn a ranking on the Fortune 500. In 1998, he formed MSD Capital. He and his wife formed the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation in 1999, to manage the investments and philanthropic efforts, respectively, of the Dell family.

Unit 6Warm upStep 1 Brainstorming1. Friendship is the wine of life.– Edward Young 2. Close friends are truly life’s treasures. Sometimes they know us better than we know ourselves. With gentle honesty, they are there to guide and support us, to share our laughter and our tears. Their presence reminds us that we are never really alone.– Vincent Van Gogh 3. 独学而无友,则孤陋而寡闻。

——孔子Learning alone without exchanges with others will lead to ignorance.– Confucius 4. 劝君更尽一杯酒,西出阳关无故人。

——王维I invite you to drink a cup of wine again; West of the Sunny Pass no more friends will be seen.– Wang Wei Step 2 Sharing your ideasWhen I did group work with my classmates and shared my views, an American classmate often “doubted” my ideas, and sometimes even argued with me. This made me very embarrassed, feeling that she was hostile to me. I shared thisunhappy experience with my foreign teacher from Canada. He smiled and told me that being critical and sharing views directly is common in Western culture. Finally, I understood the critics were not due to hostility. From then on, I no longer felt discomfort with the doubts and arguments from my American classmate. Sometimes if I had sufficient reasons I would also discuss with her in a proper manner.Reading 1Language focus1. get rid of2. disposable3. residential4. severed5. reflective6. psychologist7. acquaintance8. mobile9. disruptive10. worn outGlobal understanding1)friendly relations2)acquaintance3)residential mobility4)get rid of5)disposable6)social circles7)‘worth’ maintaining8)lonely9)associativeDetailed understanding1. I had n’t severed friendships deliberately when I was growing up, but some friendships faded away gradually and naturally. After we moved house, transferred to different schools, or were arranged to different classes, our lives became less and less interwoven. We both established new friendships and shared more time with new friends, thus eventually losing the connection with each other.Answer 2: No, I haven’t severed friendships. My friends and I are inseparable, because we spend a great deal of time hanging out and we go to school together. During my hard times, my friend would always come to my rescue and offer me advice and timely support. Besides, as one from a small city, I do n’t have many opportunities to meet new friends every now and then. Thus, I always cherish my friends who give me a lot of warmth and companionship.Reading 2Language focus1. stereotype2. hypothesis3. veil4. nightmare5. presence6. F2. F3.T4. F5.T6.T7.T8. FCultural thinkingSame reasons: People from both cultures keep silent partly because they don’t want to judge others; instead, they pay respect to others’ behaviors.Different reasons: Compared with people in the West, people in the East tend to be more careful with their words and behaviors while communicating. As the old Chinese saying goes, “言多必失.” They believe that careless talk may lead to trouble.Integrated thinking1Answer 1: Yes, it is necessary for us to keep a distance even from our close friends. This is because although we interact a lot with our close friends, we don’t want to be involved in all aspects of their lives, such as family and romantic relationship. We need to give our friends some personal space to enjoy their family time with their parents, spouse or children.Enriching my own life is an effective way to keep a proper distance from my friends. For example, I spend a lot of time on my work and hobbies, such as discussing some job issues with my colleagues and attending yoga classes after work. In this way, I don’t need to spend every minute with my friends.Answer 2: No, I don’t think we should be mindful about keeping a distance from our friends. Some friendships are characterized with close companionship. They would like to spend as much time with my friends as possible. Friendship develops naturally, and if friends feel comfortable with each other, they don’t need to keep a distance from each other.2Some popular old sayings can vividly show Chinese people’s attitudes towards relationships. With regard to intergenerational relationships, Chinese people advocate the old saying “尊老爱幼” which means “respecting the elderly and loving the young.” As to teacher-student relationships, we promote the idea of “尊师重道” which means “respecting teachers and valuing morality.” For friendships, the lyrics “友谊地久天长” can represent most Chinese people’s views.Compared with Americans, Chinese people value friendships. So they do not discard friendships just because they move to other cities to live. Emails or WeChat messages can be good ways to keep in touch after separation in distance. Compared with Finnish people, Chinese people, especially those from small cities, prefer chatting and building social networks with others. This is considered an efficient way to show hospitality and kindness.Culture mosaic1 IcebreakersAnswer 1: Yes, icebreakers are very useful. There are at least three benefits to use icebreakers: community, interaction, and empathy.Community:Community is a group of individuals who share values or ideals, or are from the same demographic group. Building community is a process, and the practice of using an icebreaker opens the door for individuals to get to know one another.Interaction:Interaction is a necessary component of community building as well, and the useof an icebreaker results in smooth and relaxing interaction between co-workers. An icebreaker might take only a few minutes, but it can bring laughter, open dialogue, or help students step out of their comfort zone.Empathy:To build a strong team, empathy is essential because it allows team members to step back, explore others’ point of view, and then collaborate to make decisions. The icebreaker gives participants the opportunity to see their co-workers’ problems at the beginning of the task, which allows them to be more empathetic and more helpful to each other during the rest of the task.Answer 2: No, sometimes icebreakers are not very useful. Some team members may feel uncomfortable with the unfamiliar icebreaker activities. In such situations, keeping a comfortable atmosphere is more important than introducing an awkward icebreaker.2 Decline in neighborliness1)Answer 1:Yes, neighborliness is important in our daily life. For example, neighbors can keep an eye on your apartment or house when you go traveling or go on a vacation. It is also advantageous to your children. They can allow them to study, play and have fun with the neighbors’ children. Moreover, having a good neighbor you get on well with gives you a chance to socialize and hence learn a thing or two from one another.Answer 2: No, neighborliness is not very important in recent years. People prefer living independently and keeping a private space nowadays. In particular, the young generation does n’t want to be bothered by “enthusiastic” neighbors; instead, they like to take care of themselves and spend more time with their friends and family. Therefore, neighborliness is not an essential part of their lives.2) The decline in neighborliness in America is similar to the trend in China nowadays. Neighbors used to be a very important part of our lives two decades ago. For example, people in the past preferred chatting with neighbors after dinner; they were very willing to help their neighbors who were very busy with work or got into some trouble. However, the Internet brings long-distance relationships closer, and we prefer to make audio or video calls to our parents and friends far away. Hence, people spend more time on virtual contact, rather than on face-to-face contact with neighbors.3 The importance of alumni relationsAnswer 1: Yes, the alumni relations help with the brand building of a university. While the educational institutions mushroom around the world, one way for an institute to stand out from the domestic and international competition is to promote its brand. And an institute’s alumni are its best bet. For example, professional success of some graduates can drive the brand, making the reputation grow. Moreover, alumni donations to the college constitute a significant part of the funding that goes to student s’financial aid, student organizations, sports facilities, and counseling. The donations can not only help school enhance its social prestige but also transform other students’ lives.Answer 2: No, it’s not necessary to improve the alumni relations. Rather than putting much investment in alumni relations, a university should focus more on the current situation and its development. Taking measures to raise the quality of teaching and research can bring more benefits than building alumni relations.。

Differences along racial and gender lines were also evident through out the survey results.
Communities of color support increased funding for highore than white people, perhaps because many expect future college attendees will come from these house holds. The proportion of Hispanics, in particular, is expected to be more than double in the not-too-distant future. And younger women support increased funding for higher education significantly more than men, perhaps because they feel more strongly that they will benefit from a college degree.

During the process of reading, please read with your eyes moving quickly for the purpose of focused reading. Get the main idea of each paragraph and the sub-ideas. At the end of the reading, please check your time and your understanding of this article. Is College Still Worth It? Do a simple Google News search on “higher education” and you‟ll get a lot of stories about how expensive it is, how much debt students are accumulating, whether college graduates are faring any better in tough economic times than any one else, and whether a college education really
translates into a better future. Cumulatively, they beg the question, “Is a college education worth it?”
Recent poll results obtained by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities(AASCU) shed some light on what Americans think about the value of a college education. The data shows the public is split on the question, with college graduates more than twice as likely to say, “Yes, it‟s worth it, ”than non-college graduates.
So basically, those who see the greatest value in higher education are those who already have
a college degree and those who perceive they have the most socio-economic advantages to gain. What do we actually know about the value of a college education? The answer on a number of dimensions is pretty resounding and it is, “Yes, it‟s worth it.”
