极限运动于20世纪60年代起源于欧美，经过几十年的发展演变成为一个包含有几十个竞赛项目的新兴综合性运动竞赛项目种类。
极限运动所倡导的理念是“追求自我、挑战自我”，发展到今天极限运动已不仅仅是一项体育运动，它所涵盖的文化已影响并成为今天年轻人的一种生活理念“追求自由的空间、探索未知的世界、创造自身的价值”。
极限运动作为一种竞技类的体育运动是由于ESPN自1995年创立的世界极限运动在全球的推广宣传普及，到今天它已成为拥有近20种比赛项目的体育运动，每年ESPN主办的世界极限运动会在年轻人心目中的影响力是仅次于奥运会的另一大体育盛会。
极限运动约在20世纪80年代末进入中国，20世纪90年代该项目得到了迅猛的发展。
目前该项目已成为我国越来越多青少年喜爱的新兴运动项目之一，具有广阔的发展前景。
1999年在浙江省湖州市举办的第一届全国极限运动大赛是中国极限运动发展的重要里程碑，由此，极限运动在国家体育总局水上运动管理中心的管理推动普及下经过六年多时间的管理、推动和普及，极限运动在中国得到了迅猛地发展。
到今天已拥有三十多家俱乐部团体会员、二百多年名注册选手，一万多名的极限运动爱好者，每年有5-6个全国和国际性的赛事。
由于极限运动进入中国的时间短，目前在国内开展比较普及的极限运动主要是极限运动的主体项目：极限滑板、极限直排轮、BMX特级单车、极限攀爬单车；并且在近二年的国际比赛中我们的运动员也取得了非常不错的成绩。
中国极限运动协会（Chinese Extreme Sports Association 简称CESA）于2004年6月经过国家体育总局、国家民政部、国务院的批准正式成立，它也是我国目前第一百个单项体育协会。

Bungee jumping
• Bungee julves jumping from a tall structure while connected to a large elastic cord. The tall structure is usually a fixed object, such as a building, bridge or crane; but it is also possible to jump from a movable object, such as a hot-air-balloon or helicopter, that has the ability to hover above the ground. The thrill comes as much from the freefalling as from the rebounds.
Parkour
• Parkour (sometimes abbreviated to PK) is an activity with the aim of moving from one point to another as efficiently and quickly as possible, using principally the abilities of the human body. It is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment — from branches and rocks to rails and concrete walls — and can be practiced in both rural and urban areas. Male parkour practitioners are recognized as traceurs and female as traceuses.
