It is well that young men should begin at the beginning and occupy the most subordinate positions. Many of the leading businessmen of Pittsburgh had a serious responsibility thrust upon them at the very threshold of their career. They were introduced to the broom, and spent the first hours of their business lives sweeping out the office. I notice we have janitors and janitresses now in offices, and our young men unfortunately miss that salutary branch of business education. But if by chance the professional sweeper is absent any morning, the boy who has the genius of the future partner in him will not hesitate to try his hand at the broom. It does not hurt the newest comer to sweep out the office if necessary. I was one of those sweepers myself.Assuming that you have all obtained employment and are fairly started, my advice to you is “aim high”. I would not give a fig for the young man who does not already see himself the partner or the head of an important firm. Do not rest content for a moment in your thoughts as head clerk, or foreman, or general manager in any concern, no matter how extensive. Say to yourself, “My place is at the top.” Be king in your dreams. And here is the prime condition of success, the great secret: concentrate your energy, thought, and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are engaged. Having begun in one line, resolve to fight it out on that line, to lead in it, adopt every improvement, have the best machinery, and know the most about it.The concerns which fail are those which have scattered their capital, which means that they have scattered their brains also. They have investments in this, or that, or the other, here there, and everywhere. “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” is all wrong. I tell you to “put all your eggs in one basket, and then watch that basket.” Look round you and take notice, men who do that not often fail. It is easy to watch and carry the one basket. It is trying to carry too many baskets that breaks most eggs in this country. He who carries three baskets must put one on his head, which is apt to tumble and trip him up. One fault of the American businessman is lack of concentration. To summarize what I have said: aim for the highest; never enter a bar room; do not touch liquor, or if at all only at meals; never speculate; never indorse beyond your surplus cash fund; make the firm’s interest yours; break orders always to save owners; concentrate; put all your eggs in one basket, and watch that basket; expenditure always within revenue; lastly, be not impatient, for as Emerson says, “no one can cheat you out of ultimate success but yourselves.

Ways to reduce your headachesThe dynamic lifestyle people lead nowadays causes many reactions in our bodies and the one that is the most frequent of all is the headache. How many times have you come back from work and felt that your head is going to explode. Well there are several ways to reduce the frequency of headaches. And those are eating healthy through the day making sure your body is well hydrated, getting some exercise to eliminate the negative energy, and helping yourself for a short massage on your head.Hot water is beneficial. We all know that water is essential to our survival. We have probably all heard doctor say that drinking roughly 8 glasses is ideal. Warm water is particularly beneficial for digestion. Studies have shown that drinking cold water during or after a meal can harden the oil present in the consumed food. However if you replace the glass of cold water with warm, you can avoid this problem.Stay positive when facing difficulties. Everyone faces difficulties from time to time. Sometimes, the difficulties come from situations that are out of our control. And other times, our difficulties are a direct consequence of the decisions we make. In life, we cannot change events or their outcome. We can however choose the emotion and meaning we attach to them. We have to retrain ourselves to see the positive in even the most challenging times.Measuring pain level is difficult. Scientists have long known that pain’s intensity is difficult to measure, because people experience pain differently. The pain one person rates at 7 for example might be 4 to someone who is more tolerant of pain. These differences make it difficult to show how well new medicines to ease pain really work. The question is especially important because of the increasing misuse of painkilling drugs in some countries.US doctoral degrees may be losing their appeal for many people who seek higher education in the US. The common study period of 2 to 4 years is not enough. The highest level of education offered by American college or university is the doctoral degree. Doctoral degree programs have a path to a well-paying, meaningful career. A new study however finds that the number of people seeking phDs has decreased. Experts say the structure of the American higher education system could be the cause.Save the polar bearsPolar bears live on the ice. It is where they hunt, mate and raise their young. But a team of researchers has found that the animal’s ice habitat is warming up and shrinking faster than experts predicted it would. The researchers say that this change in the animal’s home territory is threatening their survival. Polar bears face a difficult future unless countries reduce air pollution.。

And so we grow oldbelieving we are nothing by ourselves, steadfastly shunning the opportunities for self-discoveryand personal growth that solitude could bring us.We’ve even coined a word for those whoprefer to be by themselves: antisocial, as if they were enemies of society. They are viewed asfriendless, suspect in a world that goes around in twos or more and is wary of solitarytravelers.People who need people are threatened by people who don’t. The idea of seekingcontentment alone is heretical, for society steadfastly decrees that our completeness lies inothers. Instead, we cling to each other for solace, comfort, and safety, believing that we arenothing alone—insignificant, unfulfilled, lost—accepting solitude in the tiniest, mostreluctant of slices, if at all, which is tragic, for it rejects God’s precious gift of life.Ironically, most of us crave more intimacy and companionship than we can bear.Webegrudgeourselves, our spouses, and our partners sufficient physical and emotional breathing room, andthen bemoan the suffocation of our relationships. To point out these facts is not to suggest weshould abandon all our close ties.Medical surveys show that the majority of elderly people wholive alone, yet maintain frequent contact with relatives and friends, rate their physical andemotional well-being as “excellent.”Just as an apple a day kept the doctor away when theywere young, an active social calendar appears to serve the same purpose now. Choose OptimismIf you expect something to turn out badly, it probably will.Pessimism is seldom disappointed. But the same principle also works in reverse. If you expect good things to happen, they usually do! There seems to be a natural cause-and-effect relationship between optimism and success.Optimism and pessimism are both powerful forces, and each of us must choose which we want to shape our outlook and our expectations. There is enough good and bad in everyone’s life—ample sorrow and happiness, sufficient joy and pain—to find a rational basis for either optimism or pessimism. We can choose to laugh or cry, bless or curse. It’s our decision: From which perspective do we want to view life? Will we look up in hope or down in despair?I believe in the upward look. I choose to highlight the positive and slip right over the negative.I am an optimist by choice as much as by nature.Sure, I know that sorrow exists.I am in my 70s now, and I’ve lived through more than one crisis. But when all is said and done, I find that the good in life far outweighs the bad.An optimist ic attitude is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. The way you look at life will determine how you feel, how you perform, and how well you will get along with other people.Conversely, negative thoughts, attitudes, and expectations feed on themselves;they become a self-fulfilling prophecy.Pessimism creates a dismal place where no one wants to live. The only thing more powerful than negativism is a positive affirmation,a word of optimism and hope. One of the things I am most thankful for is the fact that I have grown up in a nation with a grand tradition of optimism. When a whole culture adopts an upward look, incredible things can be accomplished. When the world is seen as a hopeful, positive place, people are empowered to attempt and to achieve. Choose OptimismIf you expect something to turn out badly, it probably will.Pessimism is seldom disappointed. These are miserable days when you feel lousy, grumpy, lonely, andutterly exhausted.Days when you feel small and insignificant, when everything seems just outof reach. You can’t rise to the occasion.Just getting started seems impossible. On blue days youcan become paranoid that everyone is out to get you. This is not always such a bad thing.Youfeel frustrated and anxious, which can induce a nail-biting frenzy that can escalate into atriple-chocolate-mud-cake-eating frenzy in a blink of an eye! If you are feeling down, e_ercise may help pick you up. Although researchersdisagree on this issue , one review of past studies found that long-term e_ercise, especially when it includes long-lasting, strenuous training sessions, has about as much of an effect on depression as psychotherapy.Working out helps you deal with stress in your job, relationships or any area of life —possibly because e_ercise is a form of stress itself and helps condition your body to deal with it.When Australian researchers compared people who did 30 minutes of aerobic e_ercise three times a week to those who practiced progressive rela_ation techniques, they found that the former group responded better to acute stress and had lower blood pressure. Even a little e_ercise can make you think less an_iously. Studies have shown that any amount of e_ercise, from abrisk_ minute walk to an intense aerobics or weightlifting session seems to decrease feelings of an_iety.Working out regularly may make you smarter now and lessen the possibility that you’ll lose brain function as you age. According to a recent animal study at the University of Illinois, e_ercise can actually help the brain develop new cells. In several studies, regular weight training or aerobic e_ercise was shown to improvethe quality and duration of sleep. Naturally, this can make you less fatigued and be able to function better during the day. Like meditation, hobbies or any other leisure activity, e_ercise gives your mind a needed break from everyday thoughts, responsibilities and commitments. Finally, there’s one more reason to keep e_ercising. When you work out regularly, your body simply functions better you are better, healthier and less likely to suffer painful physical conditions.
Pageants are usually conceived on a fairly large scale, often under the auspices of some local or civic authority or at any rate in connection with local groups of some kind. This sometimes means that there is an allocation of funds available for the purpose of mounting the production, though unfortunately this will usually be found to be on the meager side and much ingenuity will have to be used to stretch it so that all performers can be adequately clothed. Most pageants have a historical flavour as they usually come about through the celebration of the anniversary of some event of historic importance, or the life or death of some local worthy. Research among archives and books in the public library will probably prove very useful and produce some workable ideas which will give the production an especially local flavour. From the first economy will have to be practiced because there are usually a great number of people to dress. Leading characters can be considered individually in the same way as when designing for a play; but the main body of the performers will need to be planned in groups and the massed effect must be always borne in mind. Many pageants take place in daylight in the open air. This is an entirely different problem from designing costumes which are going to be looked at under artificial lighting; for one thing, scenes viewed in the daylight are subject to many more distractions. No longer is everything around cut out by the surrounding darkness, but instead it is very easy to be aware of disturbing movement in the audience of behind the performers. Very theatrically conceived clothes do not always look their best when seen in a daylight setting of trees, verdant lawns and old ivy-covered walls; the same goes for costumes being worn in front of the mellow colors of stately homes. The location needs to be studied and then a decision can be made as to what kinds of colors and textures will harmonize best with the surroundings and conditions and then to carry this out as far as possible on the funds available. If money is available to dress the performers without recourse to their own help in the provision of items, it is best to arrange for all the cutting and pinning together of the costumes to be done by one or two experienced people than to be given out to the groups and individuals for completion. When there is little or no money at all, the garments need to be reduced to the basic necessities. Cloaks and shawls become invaluable, sheets and large bath towels and bath sheets are admirable for draping. Unwanted curtains and bed spreads can be cut to make tunics, robes and skirts. These are particularly valuable if they are of heavy fabrics such as velvet or chenille.Colors should be massed together so that there are contrasting groups of dark and light, this will be found to help the visual result substantially. Crowds of people gathered together in a jumble of colors will be ground to look quite purposeless and will lack dramatic impact. The use of numbers of identical head-dresses, however simply made, are always effective when working with groups. If these are made of cardboard and painted boldly the cost can be almost negligible. Helmets, hats and plumes will all make quite a show even if the costumes are only blandest or sheets cleverly draped. The same can be said of theuse of banners, shields and poles with stiff pennants and garlands—anything which will help to have a unifying effect. Any kind of eye-catching device will always go with a flourish and add excitement to the scenes.1. The main idea of this passage is[A]. Pageants. [B]. Costumes on the stage.[C]. Costumes for pageants. [D]. How to arrange a pageant.2. It can be inferred that the most important factor in costume design is[A]. money. [B]. color. [C]. harmony [D]. texture3. Why will much ingenuity have to be required in costume design?[A]. Because pageants take place in daylight in the open air.[B]. Because different characters require different costumes.[C]. Because the colors and textures must be in harmony with the setting.[D]. Because an allocation of the funds available is usually rather small.4. Why do most pageants have a historical flavour?[A]. Because most pageants take place for celebration.[B]. Many pageants take place for amusement.[C]. A lot of pageants take place for religion.[D]. Because pageants usually take place for competition.Vocabulary1. conceive 设想,想象to be conceived 设想好的,构思好的2. under the auspices of 在…… 1.Town and Country Life in EnglandThere is a big difference between town life and country life in England. In the country, everybody knows everybody else. They know what time you get up, what time you go to bed and what you have for dinner. If you want help, you will always get it and you will be glad to help others. In a large town like London, however, it can sometimes happen that you have never seen your next door neighbor and you do not know his name or anything about him. People in London are often very lonely. This is because people go to different places in the evenings and at weekends. If you walk through the streets in the centre of London on Sunday, it is like a town without people. One is sorry for old people living on their own. They could die in their homes and would not be discovered for weeks or even months.2.A Change in Women’s LifeThe important change in women’s life-pattern has only recently begun to have its full effect on women’s economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity, and most of them took afull-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women tend to marryyounger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to full-time or part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage, with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money, and running the home, according to the abilities and interests of each of them.3.A Popular Pastime of the English PeopleOne of the best means of understanding the people of any nation is watching what the do with their non-working time. Most English men, women and children love growing things, especially flowers. Visitors to England in spring, summer or autumn are likely to see gardens all they way along the railway lines. There are flowers at the airports and flowers in factory grounds, as well as in gardens along the roads. Each English town has at least one park with beautifully kept flower beds. Public buildings of every kind have brilliant window boxes and sometimes baskets of flowers are hanging on them. But what the English enjoy most is growing things themselves. If it is impossible to have a garden, then a window box or something growing in a pot will do. Looking at each other’s gardens is a popular pastime with the English.Useful Words and Expressions:1. window box:窗台上的花盆箱2.pastime 消遣,娱乐Swimming is my favorite pastime.4.British and American Police OfficersReal policemen, both in Britain and the U.S., hardly recognize any common points between their lives and what they se on TV—if they ever get home in time. Some things are almost the same, of course, but the policemen do not think much of them much of them. The first difference is that a policeman’s real life deals with the law. Most of what he learns is the law. He has to know actually what actions are against the law and what facts can be used to prove them in court. He has to know nearly as much law as a lawyer, and what’s more, he has to put it into practice on his feet, in the dark and, running down a narrow street after someone he wants to talk to.Little of his time is spent in talking with beautiful girls or in bravely facing cruel criminals. He will spend most of his working life arranging millions of words on thousands of forms about hundreds of sad, ordinary people who are guilty--- or not of stupid, unimportant crimes.Useful Words and Expressions:1. think much of 重视,尊重2. in court 在法庭上3. criminal 罪犯,犯罪者4. guilty 犯罪的,有罪的5.Living SpaceHow much living space does a person need? What happens when his space needs are not met? Scientists are doing experiments on rats to try to determine the effects of overcrowded conditions on man. Recent studies have shown that the behavior of rats is greatly affected by space. If rats have enough living space, they eat well, sleep well and produce their young well. But if their living conditions become too crowded, their behavior and even their health change obviously. They can not sleep and eat well, and signs of fear and worry become clear. The more crowded they are, and more they tend to bite each other and even kill each other. Thus, for rats, populations and violence are directly related. Is this a natural law for human society as well? Is enough space not only satisfactory, but necessary for human survival? These are interesting questions.6 The United NationsIn 1945, representatives of 50 nations met to plan this organization. It was called the United Nations. After the war, many more nations joined. There are two major parts of the United Nations. One is called the General Assembly. In the General Assembly, every member nation is represented and has an equal vote. The second part is called the Security Council. It has representatives of just 15 nations. Five nations are permanent members: the United States, Russia, France, Britain, and China. The 10 other members are elected every two years by the General Assembly. The major job of the Security Council is to keep peace in the world. If necessary, it can send troops from member nations to try to stop little wars before they turn into big ones.It is hard to get the nations of the Security Council to agree on when this is necessary. But they did vote to try to stop wars.Useful Words and Expressions:1. representative 代表2. 7 PlasticWe use plastic wrap to protect our foods. We put our garbage in plastic bags or plastic cans. We sit on plastic chairs, play with plastic toys, drink from plastic cups, and wash our hair with shampoo from plastic bottles! Plastic does not grow in nature. It is made by mixing certain things together. We call it a produced or manufactured material. Plastic was first made in the 1860s from plants, such as wood and cotton. That plastic was soft and burned easily. The first modern plastics were made in the 1930s. Most clear plastic starts out as thick, black oil. That plastic coating inside a pan begins as natural gas.Over the years, hundreds of different plastics have been developed. Some are hard and strong. Some are soft and bendable. Some are clear. Some are many-colored. There is a plastic for almost every need. Scientists continue to experiment with plastics. They hope to find even ways to use them!8 Display of GoodsAre supermarkets designed to persuade us to buy more?Fresh fruit and vegetables are displayed near supermarket entrances. This gives the impression that only healthy food is sold in the shop. Basic foods that everyone buys, like sugar and tea, are not put near each other. They are kept in different aisles so customers are taken past otherattractive foods before they find what they want. In this way, shoppers are encouraged to buy products that they do not really need.Sweets are often placed at children’s eye level at the checkout. While parents are waiting to pay, children reach for the sweets and put them in the trolley.More is bought from a fifteen-foot display of one type of product than from a ten-foot one. Customers also buy more when shelves are full than when they are half empty. They do not like to buy from shelves with few products on them because they feel there is something wrong with those products that are there.Useful Words and Expressions:1. aisle 走廊,过道2. trolley 手推车3. checkout 收款台9 Albert EinsteinAlbert Einstein was born in Germany in 1879, His father owned a factory that made electrical devices. His mother enjoyed music and books. His parents were Jewish but they did not observe many of the re ligion’s rules. Albert was a quite child who spent much of his time alone. He was slow to talk and had difficulty learning to read. When Albert was five years old,his father gave him a compass. The child was filled with wonder when he discovered that the compass needle always pointed in the same direction—to be north. He asked his father and his uncle what caused the needle to move. Their answers about magnetism and gravity were difficult for the boy to understand. Yet he spent a lot of time thinking about them. He said later that he felt something hidden had to be behind things.Useful expressions and words:1. device 装置,设备leave to one’s own devices 听任某人自行其是,允许某人按自己的意愿做事She left the child to her own devices for an hour in the afternoon.

An English student in one of my seminars typified what happens when hidden patterns clash. He was quite obviously experiencing strain in his relationships with Americans. Nothing seemed to go right and it was quite clear from his remarks that we did not know how to behave. An analysis of his complaints showed that a major source of irritation was that no American seemed to be able to pick up the subtle clues that there were times when he didn’t want his thoughts intruded on. As he started it, “I’m walking around the apartment and it seemsthat whenever I want to be alone my roommate starts talking to me. Pret ty soon he’s asking ‘What’s the matter?’ and wants to know if I’m angry. By then I am angry and say something.”It took some time but finally we were able to identify most of the contrasting features of the American and Britain problems that were in conflict in this case. When the American wants to be alone he goes into a room and shuts the door---he depends on architectural features for screening. For an American to refuse to talk to someone else present in the same room, to give them the “silent treatment,” is the ultimate form of rejection and a sure sign of great displeasure. The English, on the other hand, lacking rooms of their own since childhood, never developed the practice of using space as a refuge from others. They have in effect internalized a set of barriers, which they erect and which others are supposed to recognize. Therefore, the more the Englishman shuts himself off when he is with an American the more likely the American is to break in to assure himself that all is well. Tension lasts until the two get to know each other. The important point is that the spatial and architectural needs of each are not the same at all. The lowest animalBy Mark TwainMan is the only animal that robs his helpless fellow of his country-takes possession of it and drives him out of it or destroys him. Man has done this in all the ages. There is not an acre of ground on the globe that is in possession of its rightful owner, or that has not been taken away from owner after owner, cycle after cycle, by force and bloodshed.Man is the only Slave. And he is the only animal who enslaves. He has always been a slave in one form or another, and has always held other slaves in bondage under him in one way or another. In our day he is always some man's slave for wages, and does the man's work; and this slave has other slaves under him for minor wages, and they do his work. The higher animals are the only ones who exclusively do their own work and provide their own living.Man is the only Patriot. He sets himself apart in his own country, under his own flag, and sneers at the other nations, and keeps multitudinous uniformed assassins on hand at heavy expense to grab slices of other people's countries, and keep them from grabbing slices of his. And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for "the universal brotherhood of man"-with his mouth.Man is the Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion-several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself, and cuts his throat if his theology isn't straight. He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven. He was at it in the time of Caesars, he was at it in Mahomet's time, he was at it in the time of the Inquisition, he was at it in France a couple of centuries, he was at it in England in Mary's day, he has been at it ever since he first saw the light, he is at it today in Crete-as per the telegrams quoted above*-he will be at it somewhere else tomorrow. The higher animals have no religion. And we are told that they are going to be left out, in the Hereafter. I wonder why? It seems questionable taste.Man is the Reasoning Animal. Such is the claim. I think it is open to dispute. Indeed, my experiments have proven to me thathe is the Unreasoning Animal. Note his history, as sketched above. It seems plain to me that whatever he is he is not a reasoning animal. His record is the fantastic record of a maniac. I consider that the strongest count against his intelligence is the fact that with that record back of him he blandly sets himself up as the head animal of the lot: whereas by his own standards he is the bottom one.In truth, man is incurably foolish. Simple things which the other animals easily learn, he is incapable of learning. Among my experiments was this. In an hour I taught a cat and a dog to be friends. I put them in a cage. In another hour I taught them to be friends with a rabbit. In the course of two days I was able to add a fox, a goose, a squirrel and some doves. Finally a monkey. They lived together in peace; even affectionately.

In this passage, a professor is talking to his students about the history of the Great Wall of China. So, like, back in ancient China, there were all these different states, right? And they were always fighting with each other. So this emperor dude named Qin Shi Huang was like, "Hmm, maybe I should build a wall to keep out all these enemies." And that's how the Great Wall was born! The Great Wall is like super long, over 13,000 miles long. Can you believe it? And it's not just one big wall; there are actually abunch of walls that were built over different dynasties. It's like a giant puzzle! Now, the professor in the passage explains that the Great Wall was not just for defense, but also for trade and communication. We enjoy reading books that belong to us much more than if they are borrowed. A borrowed book is like a guest in the house; it must be treated withpunctiliousness, with a certain considerate formality. You must seethat itsustains no damage; it must not suffer while under your roof. Butyour own booksbelong to you; you treat them with that affectionate intimacy that annihilatesformality. Books are for use, not for show; you should own no bookthat you areafraid to mark up, or afraid to place on the table, wide open andface down. Agood reason for marking favorite passages in books is that thispractice enablesyou to remember more easily the significant sayings, to refer to them quickly, and then in later years, it is like visiting a forest where you once blazed atrail. Everyone should begin collecting a private library in youth;the instinctof private property can here be cultivated with every advantage andno evils. The best of mural decorations is books; they are more varied in color andappearance than any wallpaper, they are more attractive in design, and they havethe prime advantage of being separate personalities, so that if you sit alone inthe room in the firelight, you are surrounded with intimate friends. The knowledge that they are there in plain view is both stimulating andrefreshing. Books are of the people, by the people, for the people. Literatureis the immortal part of history; it is the best and most enduring part ofpersonality. Book-friends have this advantage over living friends; you can enjoythe most truly aristocratic society in the world whenever you want it. The greatdead are beyond our physical reach, and the great living are usually almost asinaccessible. But in a private library, you can at any moment converse withSocrates or Shakespeare or Carlyle or Dumas or Dickens. And there is no doubtthat in these books you see these men at their best. They laid themselves out, they did their ultimate best to entertain you, to make a favorable impression. You are necessary to them as an audience is to an actor; only instead of seeingthem masked, you look into their innermost heart of heart.

Born to WinEach human being is born as something new, something that never existed before. Each is born with the capacity to win at life. Each person has a unique way of seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, and thinking. Each has his or her own unique potentials1)---capabilities and limitations. Each can be a significant, thinking, aware, and creative being---a productive person, a winner. The words “winner”and “loser”have many meanings. When we refer to a person as a winner,we do not mean one who makes someone else lose.To us, a winner is one who responds authentically by being credible, trustworthy, responsive, and genuine, both as an individual and as a member of a society.Winners do not dedicate their lives to a concept of what they imagine they should be; rather, they are themselves and as such do not use their energy putting on a performance, maintaining pretence and manipulating others. They are aware that there is a difference between being loving and acting loving, between being stupid and acting stupid, between being knowledgeable and acting knowledgeable. Winners do not need to hide behind a mask.Winners are not afraid to do his own thinking and use his own knowledge. He can separate facts from opinion and doesn't pretend to have all the answers. He listens to others, evaluates what they say, but comes to his own conclusions. Although winners can admire and respect other people, there is not totally defined, demolished2), bound, or awed by them.Winners do not play “helpless”, nor do they play the blaming game. Instead, they assume responsibility for their own lives. They don’t give others a false authority over them. Winners are their others a false authority over them. Winners are their own bosses and know it.A winner’s timing is right. Winners respond appropriately to the situation. Their responses are related to the message sent and preserve the significance, worth, well-being, and dignity of the people involved. Winners know that for everything there is a season and for every activity a time. Although winners can freely enjoy themselves, they can also postpone enjoyment, can discipline himself in the present to enhance his enjoyment in the future. A winner is not afraid to go after what he wants but does so in appropriate ways. Winners are not afraid to go after what he wants, but they do so in proper ways. Winners do not get their security by controlling others. They do not set themselves up to lose.A winner cares about the world and its people. A winner is not isolated from the general problems of society, but is concerned, compassionate3) and committed to improving the quality of life. Even in the face of national and international adversity, a winner’s self-image is not one of a powerless individual. A winner works to make the world a better place.

Comments on the American DreamThe phrase"American dream" generally refers to the hopes has for his own well-being in America. It is not necessarily a selfish notion, because achieving the dream is assumed to make America strong.Because the dream is held by individuals, there can be as many different dreams as there are people to have them.A new immigrant may dream of mastering the language, holding a steady job, and having his own apartment.A successful industrialist may dream of acquiring more companies. In the past, the most typical components of the American dream for ordinary are as follows. The first component is a piece of land where one can sustain himself and raise a family.Having the land has to go beyond mere subsistence. It must also provide for a profit and expansion. Most importantly, it must help to give your children better opportunties than you had.A final component is freedom of movementwithin your geographic area.In our agriculrural age, freedom of movement came with horse and wagon. We remain emotionally tied to our agricultural past.We replace the working farm of the American dream with a suburban house and an urban job.The horse that took our ancestors to town once a month for supplies isreplaced by a couple of cars that take us several places everyday. The essence of the American dream seems to me to be geographic space and physical freedom. One's efforts allow one to succeed independently while providing an improved future for one's children and making a contribution to the world that one can be proud of.The dream has its constants, but is ever-changing with the people and with the times. For young students today, the dream might include a very high-paying technology job from which one could retire at an early ageand devote oneself to helping others. For middle-aged people today, the dream may include voluntary simplicity--a planned reduction in consump-tion with a potentially more satisfying lifestyle. 1 00:00:00,009 --> 00:00:06,110Struggling in America200:00:06,119 --> 00:00:15,300The United States of America is often seen as a nation300:00:15,309 --> 00:00:19,020in which the pursuit of happiness is not a dream but a reality.400:00:19,029 --> 00:00:23,940The sad truth is that although portrayed as an unusually easy life,500:00:23,949 --> 00:00:27,770life in America is as much of a struggle as in any other nation.600:00:27,779 --> 00:00:33,240For example, higher level education for Americans does not come easy.700:00:33,249 --> 00:00:37,060Although there are scholarships, grants and loans available,800:00:37,069 --> 00:00:42,640if the student fails to meet the criteria he is left with onlypersonal resources to draw from.900:00:42,649 --> 00:00:47,670This takes him into a life with not only a school schedule to follow butperhaps,1000:00:47,679 --> 00:00:50,190also, a work schedule and family life 1100:00:50,199 --> 00:00:55,330These are often the difficulties that are not portrayed through theTV andmovies.1200:00:55,339 --> 00:00:58,320These are also the difficulties which many believe1300:00:58,329 --> 00:01:01,780they will not encounter by attending an American college.1400:01:01,789 --> 00:01:05,060In the second place, there is financial security.1500:01:05,069 --> 00:01:10,970Many times what is portrayed of life in America is a life where “money isno object”.1600:01:10,979 --> 00:01:13,050The fallacy in this is that,1700:01:13,059 --> 00:01:13,050Each person has their own personal struggle1800:01:13,059 --> 00:01:13,260and money is an object for the majority of the people.1900:01:13,269 --> 00:01:16,110in spite of the comparatively higher wages available,2000:01:16,119 --> 00:01:18,300the cost of living is also higher.2100:01:18,309 --> 00:01:21,690Even though it may seem like one is making more money,2200:01:21,699 --> 00:01:30,330just as much is spent in surviving.2300:01:30,339 --> 00:01:35,250Thirdly is the belief that in the American way of life everyone has a goodjob.2400:01:35,259 --> 00:01:38,420With the increasing advancements in technology,2500:01:38,429 --> 00:01:43,240a well-paying job for those currently in the work force is getting harder tofind.2600:01:43,249 --> 00:01:46,630Those who have not been exposed to computers2700:01:46,639 --> 00:01:50,310and other new methods of communication are finding this to be true.2800:01:50,319 --> 00:01:52,110As it stands now,2900:01:52,119 --> 00:01:56,680the job market is requiring at least a two-year degree from college,3000:01:56,689 --> 00:01:58,770in order to make enough to live comfortably.3100:01:58,779 --> 00:02:02,480Even then well-paid jobs are not easy to find,3200:02:02,489 --> 00:02:04,480as it is sometimes believed because of the portrayal of life in America.。
