傲慢与偏见中的讽刺艺术(英文---免费)

傲慢与偏见中的讽刺艺术(英文---免费)

Satiric art of Jane Austen in pride and prejudiceIn 19th century British society, there was a commonly held belief that women wanted to marry a man of good fortune and who would provide for them. In Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice", Austen succeeds in tearing down the 19th century British view of marriage by showing that true love in marriage conquers marriages based on a desire for financial stability or any other reason. While the opening lines of Austen's novel seem to show that women of 19th century British were ironically at a disadvantage in selecting a marriage partner, Austen challenges such a social belief by presenting the character of Elizabeth- a woman who does not yield to the standards of society . Mr. Collins is portrayed as a supposed archetype for the men of the time who believe that the woman should accept any offer to wed on the basis that she will learn to love the man. Austen's objective of satirizing the social restrictions put upon women is exemplified when Elizabeth rejects the proposal of Mr. Collins disregarding the fact that her mother wants her to wed Mr. Collins because it will save the property of Mr. Bennet- Elizabeth's father, and allow her to have a home since Mr. Collins is entitled to inherit the land; with Elizabeth's refusal to marry Mr. Collins, the notion that a woman being in want of a man with a good fortune becomes disproved and obsolete. To reiterate, Elizabeth rejects the proposal of Mr. Collins for the pure reason being that she does not have any love for him and will not marry for any reason unless it is for love. There are those who am may say that Austen fails in her attempt to satirize 19th century views upon women because they would say that Charlotte Lucas indeed marries Mr. Collins for the security and money. However this opposition fails in its attempt to debunk Austen because it neglects the fact that faced with dwindling youth Charlotte Lucas is in seek of a secure home and Mr. Collins has not a large fortune to begin with. Charlotte is a 27 year old woman who resides with her parents and she knows that if she waits any longer that she may never find a mate to accept her on the biases that she is too old.In order to abase the 29th century views upon women, Austen deliberately puts the relationship of Elizabeth and Darcy on a rocky road to show that is Elizabeth is interested in Darcy, not in his money. After having perceived Darcy as being pompous and wicked man for what he had supposedly done to Mr. Wickham- Lydia's husband. This perceptionof Darcy derived from Wickham's lie about the inheritance of Darcy's father's estate where Darcy was to receive an inheritance, but where Darcy refuses to give Wickham any of the inheritance because Darcy envied Mr. Wickham. Elizabeth confronts Darcy regarding his allegation against him by Mr. Wickham and Darcy's involvement in the separation of Jane and Mr. Bingley and after speaking upon the matter, Austen shows that the marrying of money is not essential when Elizabeth's prejudice towards Darcy grows so much that she refuses his offer to wed. But through Darcy's actions including finding the runaway sister Lydia and bringing back Mr.Bingley, Austen shows Mr. Darcy has love towards Elizabeth and with these actions Elizabeth sees Darcy's loves towards her and her love for him allows her to accept his second offer to wed Throughout her novel, Austen indirectly satirizes the social ideologies of her time regarding women and marriage. Austen also uses intricate situations among her characters to highlight the follies that emerge from 19th century belief of women in regards to marriage. All in all Austen shows that love in marriage makes for a better marriage than one based on financial reasoning or on class structure.。

1. "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."(译:“众所周知的一个真理,拥有财产的单身男人一定需要妻子。

”)这句名言是小说开头的第一句,但是读者会很快发现,这句话并不完全是真理。

这个反讽的开始揭示了小说中关于婚姻观念的艰苦,也讽刺了人们对于物质财富的崇拜。

2. Mr. Collins慈善地称赞他自己是“慈善事业的庇护者”("patron and defender of all charities"),但他实际上对慈善事业一无所知。

A charming flower——傲慢与偏见中反讽手法的运用

A charming flower——傲慢与偏见中反讽手法的运用

A charming flower------the irony of “Pride and Prejudice”Irony is a kind of literature expression which uses the words to express something other than or opposite of the literal meaning. In this kind of tactic, the author usually hides what she really wants to convey, but through the contrast between the beginning and the ending, readers could understand the real purpose clearly. It is performed vividly by Jane Austen in her famous novel, …Pride and Prejudice‟. In her novel, this kind of expression seems so mature and successful. And this is one of the reasons why she has the same reputation and status with Shakespeare.Irony contains verbal irony, situational irony, and structural irony. It appears in this novel frequently. On one hand, it provides the readers some clearer qualities of the characters. On the other hand, it plays an important part in emphasizing the theme: property, women‟s social status, and the free love. It‟s just like a charming flower in this novel. And we could see its necessary status through some illustrations.“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.” This is the first sentence of the novel, and it obviously points out thesocial situation at that time. Here Jane uses verbal irony. In fact, I believe that nobody will say it‟s a truth. Concerning about the verbal irony, Ms Bennet is also a very appropriate example. “My dear Mr. Bennet…”, to tell the truth, I have never heard a wife call her husband in such a way. And this reflects her shallow character.Another example is about Mr. Collins, a man who belittled himself before the influential, but was arrogant before the poor. He was so proud of himself that he said he must marry Miss Elizabeth. Finally, he failed to marry her but marry Elizabeth‟s good friend. This is regarded as situational irony which reflects Mr. Collin‟s hypocritical character. On the opposite, it makes me see Elizabeth is a wise and brave girl. In contrast, her friend is so greedy and shallow that she is willing to marry a man she doesn‟t love at all. She only wants to marry and have a steady and wealthy life. To marry a rich man is her only aim. And such kind of view of value is probably influenced by the society.Another situational irony refers to Mr. Darcy‟s aunt, a very rich but hypocritical and sober lady. After she knew that Mr. Darcy falls in love with Elizabeth and they are going steady, she was too angry to stop herself from hurting Elizabeth. In order to let Mr. Darcy marry her daughter, she went to the Bennet in themidnight and abused Elizabeth. But because of such behavior, the hero and the heroine meet again and then release some misunderstandings, even get engaged. Of course, such a consequence is contrary to the aunt‟s original idea. Here, Jane uses irony to indicate the aunt‟s character directly: selfishness, looking down to the poor, and arrogance. “…but your skillful charms may have made him forget, in a moment of foolishness, what he owes to himself and his family.” This part lets me know more about Elizabeth‟s character. She said, “I will make no such promise .You have totally misunderstood my character if you think I can be persuaded by such threats .I do not know whether your nephew would approve of your interference in his life ,but you certainly have no rights to inference in mine.”Look, a graceful, independent, and self-respect girl. Also, it helps us in realizing some part of the theme: true love won‟t be hindered if only you see it by your heart. And now, let‟s put our eyes on the hero, Mr. Darcy and the heroine, Elizabeth. They are put into the structure irony. When Mr. Darcy first met Elizabeth, he was sure that neither himself nor his friend, Mr. Bingley would marry any girl of the Bennets. And the same to Elizabeth, when Mr. Darcy proposal to her, she was very stubborn and said, “Mr. Darcy, you could not havemade me the offer of your hand in any possible way that would have tempted me to accept it. The moment I first met you ,I noticed your pride ,your sense of superiority ,and your selfish disdain for the feelings of others. Later events strengthened my dislike for you. You are the last man in the world whom I could ever be persuaded to marry.” It is no doubt that irony here makes us pay attention to the theme of the novel. Why they hate each other but eventually they get married? Yes, because of the pride and prejudice. Both of them are pride of themselves, and listen to others‟ words easily, and this leads to the prejudice. Anyhow, they know each other very well at last and go steady. There are some other illustrations of irony. Take Mr. Bennet as an example, when he was young, he fell in love with a girl only because of her appearance. Although he bared his rude and shallow wife for about 30 years, his heart wasn‟t in his home at all. What‟s a pity that a man pay his all life only for a wrong choice.Through above all examples, it‟s certain that irony makes literature more colorful and vivid. On my view of it, irony makes the novel more ironical and interesting because of the ripples of the story. Due to it‟s effective function, the novel becomes more attractive than other novels. It not only has thereflection of characters, but also the emphasis on the theme. So I support, irony translated the meaning of “charming flower”to us.。

Irony is the art of expressing two meanings simultaneously; the obvious surface meaning the majority will regard as the only meaning and on a deeper profounder meaning which lies behind the obvious.具有讽刺意味的是同时表达两种含义的艺术;明显的表层意义多数都会视为唯一的意义和深刻含义更深的背后明显的谎言。

The tension created by this ambivalence can be and has been put to a variety of uses. Ironies abound in Shakespeare, so do they in Dryden and Poe.Shakespeare employs them to underscore the tragic plight of a man, while Dryden and Pope use them to mock at human follies and foibles.among the forty eight writings, Fanny urney's 'Cecilia','Comilla' and other novels are based on quiet but incisive irony. Thomas Love Peacocks "Headlong Hall", "Nightmare Abbey',"Maid Marian" and so on are the vehicles of attacks on the cranks and the fads of his day.but very few writers have exploited all possible resources of irony as Jane Austen. It may not be an exaggeration to say that Jane Austen is nothing if not ironical.Irony is her very forte;it is in fact the very soul of her art.Pride and Prejudice, for instance, is steeped in irony. To put it in other words, it is an artistic blend of ironic and dramatic design.almost everything in this novel, be it related to the context or to the style, points to an ironic contrast between 'appearance' and 'reality'.it is the complex handling of "First Impressions" thatlends to Austen's irony.傲慢与偏见,例如,把沉浸在irony.To换句话说它,它是一种艺术融合了讽刺和戏剧性design.almost一切都在这部小说中,无论是涉及到的背景或风格,一分具有讽刺意味的对比,出现'和'真实'。

傲慢与偏见 反讽对白及分析

《傲慢与偏见》Pride and Prejudice 反讽语言摘录及分析一、Bennet先生对女儿Elizabeth说:“I admire all my three sons-in-law highly, Wickham, perhaps, is my favorite; but I think I shall like your husband quite as well as Janeps.”Bennet先生在说反话,Wickham与小女儿Lydia私奔, 给全家带来莫大的耻辱。

二.“The other is Miss deBourgh. Only look at her. She is quite a little creature. Who would have thought she could be so thin and small?”“I like her appearance. She looks sickly and cross. Yes, she willdo for him very well She will make him a very proper wife.”这是Elizabeth和Maria在Collins先生家做客时看到Rosings的女继承人deBourgh小姐时的对话。

她俩都亲眼看到deBourgh小姐又瘦又小,病病歪歪脾气又坏so thin and small, looks sickly and cross与Elizabeth 的话语I like her appearance.明显不相容, 从而促进了反讽意图的识别。

三.当一心想把女儿嫁出去的Bennet太太得知Elizabeth 居然拒绝了Collins的求婚时, 她找到Bennet先生, 指望他来逼迫女儿接受婚约。

于是他把E lizabeth叫到书房来:“Come here, ch ild, I have sent for you on an affair of importance. I understand that Mr. Collins has made you an offer of marriage. Is it true?”“It was.”“Very well and this offer of marriage you have refused?”“I have, Sir.”“Very well. We now come to the point. Your mother insists upon your accepting it. Is it not so, Mrs. Benne?”“Yes, or I will never see her again.”“An unhappy alternative is before you, Elizabeth. From this day you must be a stranger to one of your parents. Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do.”Bennet先生先是煞有介事地盘问了太太和女儿各自的意见, 使太太重申了她对女儿提出的威胁) 不嫁Collins 就不认这个女儿了。

Mrs. Bonnet had no other wish if her five daughters could get married as soon as possible with someone wealthy. At a dancing ball, it is obvious that Mr. Bingley could not help falling in love at the first sight with Miss Jane because of her stunning beauty. Mrs. Benne was so excited that she could not hold her manner and declared publicly she would have a daughter married soon, which frightened Mr. Bingley away. Mr. Collins, a distance nephew of Mr. Bennet, came to ask a marriage to one of his cousins before Mrs. Bennet was able to get clear why Mr. Bingley left suddenly. After receiving the hint from Mrs. Bennet that Jane already had an admirer, Mr. Collins turned to Elizabeth without wasting a minute and to Miss Charlotte Lucas two days later after refused by Elizabeth. It was difficult for Mrs. Bennet to recover herself as a result of the“deadly stupid” decision made by Elizabeth until she got the news that Lydia finally married Mr. Wickham, though the marriage was built on the basis of ten thousand pounds. Mr. Darcy offered the money and did everything departing from his will just because he loved Elizabeth so much. He could not hide his feelings any more and showed his affection to Elizabeth at last, who, because of a series of misunderstandings towards him, rejected him without hesitation. This plot is the climax of the novel as the prejudice of Elizabeth to Mr. Darcy was exposed and removed since then. And the combination of the two young couples, Jane and Bingley, Elizabeth and Darcy came at last.KEY WORDS:目录(一)作者简介--------------------------------------------------------4页(二)反讽概念分析--------------------------------------------------5页(三)言语行为理论与反讽-----------------------------------------6页(四)塑造人物中运用反讽艺术的特色--------------------------7页(五)从文章主题和构成上体现反讽-----------------------------8页(六)结束语-----------------------------------------------------------9页(七)参考文献--------------------------------------------------------9页简·奥斯汀(1775~1817)英国女小说家。

The society not only in the novels of graffiti was attracted to the general reader, to this day, still give the reader a unique art enjoyment. The main story of the eighteenth century is said Britain in four marriage. One of the main, natures is to happen in the actress Elizabeth Bennett and actor fee William Darcy’s love or hate. Elizabeth is a brave to pursue love, beautiful clever, strong lovely middle class women. Focusing on her story to Mr. Darcy from the beginning of the aversion to respect, to love for clues, also in several happened into in her side of happiness or a bad marriage, the author reveals the women of the period the ideal of life and love and expectations. The heroine’s story Elizabeth first saw actor Darcy is not pleasing to the eye, plus male leading role personality arrogance, and then to his prejudices. And actor Darcy, is a popular arrogant man, also is above the interpersonal relationship around cold, for him, is the arrogance perhaps right, prejudice is relentless, both the impact is inevitable. This is Pride and Prejudice the opening a paragraph, a brief but personality to began from the curtain of the love and the marriage. The whole novel looks is always talking about love and marriage, but here love without any magnificent and victorious, here have no other novels of the marriage had communicated so smoothly, so a person feel infinite happy. On the contrary, the hero and heroine of the novel a hold “arrogance”, another hold “bias”, but on the is such a pair of so-called “enemy”, and finally have prejudice and misunderstanding, happy together. The story didn’t a lot of ups a nd downs, but that is the way the plot, let the reader is deeply infatuated with which people feel such a love in the time also is in learning some necessary worldly wisdom.Characters characteristics of the character of all is quite obvious, the heroine Elizabeth witty, have courage, these have vision, have very strong self-respect, and be good at thinking. It was a young unmarried young lady speaking, this is valuable. It is this quality, just makes her in love have independent initiative, and contributed to her and happy family of Darcy. And Darcy give the impression is insolent, unruly and reserved quiet and picky fastidious, even clever astute, has received the good education but or boring person. At the same time, the novel another male host Mr .Bingley’s case bliss, frank, gentle disposition and Darcy to form bright contrast, let the reader on both in personality of know more entrenched. But later Darcy inner love and the importance of change to the spiritual realm and shown before and the character of the heavy intertwined formed full character image, let the reader with an endless aftertaste, and for the whole story graces many.A “arrogance”, another “bias”, so the two almost all people all don’t watch good opposite, the final success together, to have a happy family. This is the purpose of, so, of course, is given in the paper of a unique aesthetic view, people go from there, will see pure love, a good marriage.Chapter Two Feminism struggle This part of main tells the author Jane Austen was the background of life, and lists the example to verify novel heroine Elizabeth of personality is the pursuit of equality and the sincere friendship to sisters. More important is outstanding at the time of the shackles of society women and women equal rights to unremitting pursuit.2.1 BackgroundAusten era of life, women is generally discrimination, women were considered less than men in intelligence. Although the capitalist system has been established, but feudalism remained entrenched, hereditary noble and middle class coexist. As Pride and Prejudice has revealed that, men and women don’t equal. The sisters of Bennett because the inheritance law provisions to recent male relative’s property by inheritance, they will be on impoverish themselves after his father’s death. Austin’s girls, in daily and no broad in scope, they can only stay in the home, or occasionally go to visit some friends, or by parental company to go to a dance. They don’t work, the social and family also do not need to their work, and they can only through the marriage change our own destiny.Elizabeth’s marriage in full performance Austin highly the ideal mode in her and Darcy relationship, and always persist in their personality of equality and dignity, the noble sentiment, emotional needs as the life value and life of happiness is an important part. This kind of marriage attitude psychological basis including mutual understanding, respect, and equality and freedom, it is these quality; people could surpass the bondage of patriarchal, fulfillment.2.2 To the character equality pursuitThe core of the feminist thought was a protest against the reality of the patriarchal society women enslaved, emphasize the women should have equal rights with men and position, called for women should not be subject to male society, and should be in their best to appraisal oneself as the female should be in their best to appraisal oneself as the female should have existence value, subversion now the irrationality of the patriarchal society, establish and improve the status of women in society protruding women can not be ignored, not replace social value. Pursue the equality of men and women in Austin, especially the equality of personality. Austin’s point of view is clearly heard the heroine Elizabeth to explain. Books of the heroine Elizabeth was born in a small landlord family, children for rich Darcy love. Darcy regardless of the wealth gap between the family and, asked her to marry him,but was rejected. Elizabeth to his misunderstanding and prejudice is a reason, but the main is she hates his arrogance. Because this kind of Darcy arrogance is actually reflect the status difference, as long as there is this kind of arrogant, he and Elizabeth may not be between the thoughts and feelings of the common, and there may not be an ideal marriage. Later Elizabeth have observed the Darcy’s communicating and a series of actions , especially see he changed the past that pride conceited expression, eliminate the misunderstanding and prejudice, and he concluded a happy marriage. Elizabeth to Darcy has proposed several times the different attitudes, actually reflect the women to independent personality rights such as the pursuit of peace.By Elizabeth this novel shaping the out of the rebel women, show the hope of women development bisexual temperament, form double gender in personality, establish a dual gender roles, can control the good will of their own lives. Although at the time of the British realize this desire conditions is not mature, but at least she was later the women’s liberation movement has the function of the testing of the waters. So we have to for three hundred years ago the bud of female consciousness Jane Austen’s vision and admit defeat. And her female consciousness of the awakening of the prophecy has now got the proof of history.2.3 Sincere friendship of the sistersSisters friendship is the emphasis of feminists, feminists advocate the women should support each other, kiss as sisters, this point in Pride and Prejudice have fully manifested in. In Pride and Prejudice can see between women of profound friendship. The heroine Elizabeth to Jean’s deep friendship let readers moving. Jane to Bennett’s home, was on the way, when the sick in the host family. In order to see dear sister, Elizabeth alone in the muddy road three miles, to arrived at Bingley’s case home. As a young lady, her movement is very unpopular, and she can’t consider of embarrassment, a heart only care about Jane illness. In fact of Jane’s more concerned about Elizabeth reflected in the sister and Bingley’s case in love, because she thought Jane so good, should find happy ending. But just is Darcy trying to destroy the love between them. So when Darcy to Elizabeth marry him, she exclaimed:“a ruined my dear sister happiness forever, even destroyed her happiness of person, how can touched my heart to love him?” This shows how much she pay attention to the friendship between the sisters, even in some degree on love more than she expected.Chapter Three Irony and dramatic artistic charmthought-provokingPart of the success of Austen works is that his with dramatic technique characters character, and the technique of irony to spread the story. Irony and dramatic is Austen tone and style of the novel sign, which is the novel artistic charm. Her through the characters talk let themselves show character, in those leisurely, polite comprehensive conversation implied meaning and purpose, judge multilayer and emotional, first time reading this book readers can feel some scene contains irony, further reading can fully understand all of the book connotation, feel the writer’s creation charm. The Literary Encyclopedia divisions to “irony” definition for humor a way of using language, and points out that the irony is often the surface of indirect meaning of the contents of the opposition and deny or conflict. As a kind of rhetoric, irony expression is expected and actual conditions don’t match. Pride and Prejudice opening “the entire wealthy bachelor, always want to marry a wife, that it is a truth universally acknowledge” [3] (P1) is a good example. Its name literally means single young men have planes to get married, “truth universally acknowledge”indicates that is surrounding the somebody else marry her daughter’s intention, we can see that the language of the irony, contains both surface, publicly meaning, but also has deep, the implied meaning, this need to readers in the emotional or judgment in richer and more complex response. Praise or against, sympathy or disdain, pain or pleasure and so on many emotions tend to blend together, to the reader in understanding rich experience.Jane Austen use of irony that the character scene technique is more complicated and changeable, and make novel have more drama composition, and theatrical expression and leaving readers impelled to place oneself among them. In addition, the topic and content of use is irony Pride and Prejudice and a characteristic. According to the subject, simple to understand Darcy is arrogant, Elizabeth is rather too simple to have prejudice. The article in some of the thinking and behavior Elizabeth shows the potential something—she wants to know more about Darcy, her heart of hearts are more willing to close to Darcy.Compared with is moderate, easy-going Bingley, Darcy does seem to be some constraint, too reserved and some withdrawn, with not enough kind. But, as he had explained:“I really don’t like somebody else that can meet, always don’t know can also self-indulgence. I also can’t talk like that, people with hypocrisy concerns.”[3] (P199-200) first Darcy expressed by pride but was due to his contacts with strangers too formal caused by the character, but also because he is blunt, would not liewith a vulgar or inappropriate behavior. He offered to close to Elizabeth, listen to her conversation with others, to invite her to dance, attentively to visit her and her friends, family. As for his don’t really take a reason others, just a surrounding environment and incompatible stands off, and can’t showed he was insulted, through the above analysis, we can see that Jane Austen is by no means simple shaped arrogant Darcy and with prejudice of Elizabeth, in her novels have given them a deeper meaning.ConclusionAs British literary history a monumental work, Pride and Prejudice this novel plot vivid, fluency humor, formed the character of reflect incisively and vividly. The heroine Elizabeth strong, in the book, optimistic, active, and frank, rich insight and curiosity very heavy, is a clever but lovely woman. And actor Darcy is a surface arrogance, actually heart good young man, through him, let me know how a truth: all things are not only look at the surface, but to focus on the inner. In Pride and Prejudice, Austen wrote Elizabeth sisters and her girlfriend’s marriage, these are perfect, used with the heroine of the ideal marriage contrast. Like Charlotte and Collins although married comfortable material life, but they do not love each other, this kind of marriage is actually a real social tragedy. Thus, we can conclude“affection is a very good thing, but not thoughtless, should deliberate before deciding to his whole life happiness” the truth. Moreover, on Pride and Prejudice , in the book is male leading the obstacle of the love, but in actual society but also people communicate each other obstacles, but also in the treat oneself correctly, stumbling block on towards things. To be in life where a career, whether knowledge, education, or the love, career, all need all their heart with shallow trap or shadow float do struggle, all kinds of misunderstanding and long time of repeated process of cognition, slowly by the mind overcome their weaknesses and disease, and to the open, free and easy, the freedom of the inevitable result. Finally, Pride and Prejudice literature to see if not belongs to enormous project, but deeply shocked the reader’s heart. It’s based in fact is quite narrow, is just some life trivial, but brings us is a kind of English country rich flavor of life, let a person feel hospitable nature. Let us also to realize: reflecting life work that is a beautiful work. And for most people, only go light is true.To sum up, this paper to the British social background, the author’s unique insights and character in fiction character as main body, the author unique aesthetics, and dramatic irony of the art and novel of feminism has revealed a struggle for limb, system analysis the works to humankind how generous feast. But also for the author Jane Austen’s talent and original views and admire, she is not just a great writer, but also a real thinker.Works CitedGentzler, Edwin. [英语作文]Humor and Satire in Pride and Prejudice《傲慢与偏见》的幽默与讽刺Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" is a literary masterpiece renowned not only for its romantic plot but also for its sharp use of humor and satire. Throughout the novel, Austen employs biting irony, witty dialogue, and well-placed comic situations to critique the societal norms and class prejudices of the Georgian era. This essay explores the ways in which humor and satire are interwoven into the fabric of "Pride and Prejudice," highlighting Austen's critical perspective on the society of her time. One of the most evident forms of humor in "Pride and Prejudice" comes from the character of Mrs. Bennet, a woman whose single-minded ambition to marry off her daughters provides endless comic relief. Her obsession with securing good marriages for her daughters, regardless of their personal feelings or the suitability of the match, showcases the ridiculous lengths to which some parents would go to achieve social status through marriage. The exaggerated nature of her behavior and her often absurd attempts to push her daughters towards eligible bachelors offer a humorous yet pointed commentary on the societal pressure to marry for financial or social gain. The character of Mr. Collins, a pompous and self-important clergyman, serves as another vehicle for Austen's satirical observations. His verbose and convoluted speeches, filled with platitudes and flattery, are a source of constant amusement for the reader. Through Mr. Collins, Austen mocks the affectation and servility that characterized the behavior of many minor clergymen who sought to curry favor with their social superiors.Austen's use of irony is perhaps the most effective tool in her arsenal of humor and satire. The contrast between characters' perceived faults and their actual virtues, or vice versa, creates a layered narrative that encourages readers to question the superficial judgments made by society. For instance, the character of Mr. Darcy, initially portrayed as an arrogant and prideful man, is gradually revealed to have honorable intentions and genuine affection for Elizabeth. Conversely, the seemingly charming Wickham is exposed as a deceitful and self-serving individual. By subverting readers' expectations, Austen playfully illustrates how appearances can be deceiving and emphasizes the importance of understanding and judging people based on their actions rather than their reputations.Humor also arises from the clever wordplay and dialog that reflects the period's rigid social mores. The banter between the characters, particularly between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, is laced with wit and repartee that exposes the folly of those who take themselves too seriously. Elizabeth's sharp tongue and quick mind make her a refreshing protagonist in a time when women wereexpected to be demure and passive. Her intelligent responses challenge the notion of women's intellectual inferiority, using humor as a means to underscore her agency and independence. In conclusion, Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" is a comedic tour de force that uses humor and satire to challenge the social norms of the Georgian era. Through her skillful use of irony, well-crafted characters, and clever dialogue, Austen invites readers to laugh at the absurdities of the time while simultaneously promoting deeper insights into human nature and the complexities of relationships. The novel's enduring popularity can be attributed not only to its romantic storyline but also to its rich tapestry of humor and satire that continues to resonate with modern audiences.。

The third part makes an analysis of the characters in the novel. The fourth part is the conclusion, restating the thesis of the paper.Key words: "Pride and Prejudice"; humor; ironyI. Introduction1.1.An introduction to the authorJane Austen was born on December 16th, 1775, in Steventon rectory in Hampshire, England. She spent her years of childhood and youth there. Her father was the rector of Steventon, Hampshire and Jane Austen was the seventh daughter. At first, Mr. Austen wanted to find a good boarding school for his daughters. However, all this attempts failed. Then, he decided to teach his daughters at home. Of course, they benefited from their father's extensive library and his guidance a lot. Jane Austen spent her early years quietly and cheerfully in doing small domestic duties. She began to write at an early age and when she was fifteen years old, her writing was already marked by her characteristic neat stylishness and her crisp irony. Jane Austen liked to read what she had written to her family. And it impressed her father greatly. So in order to publish his daughter's works, Mr. Austen tried to write to some publisher, offering the manuscript. But he failed. The Austen family moved to Bath in 1801.They lived there until Mr. Austen died in 1805. Later, Jane Austen moved to Southampton, and then to Chawton in Hampshire together with her mother, her sister-Cassandra, and her lifelong friend-Martha Lloyd. In 1817, she went to Winchester due to her health problem and died there on July 18th,1817. She was buried in Winchester Cathedral. In Jane Austen's lifetime, she did not get married.Jane Austen enjoyed a life of 41 years. During this period, she wrote six novels all together. They are Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. The first four novels were published while she was living at Chawton, and the last two in December 1817, several months after her death. But Jane Austen was too modest to acknowledge that she was the authors of these six novels. All of her novels were published anonymously. In all these six novels, Jane Austen talked about the small world that she lived in. “Of events her life was singularly barren: few changes, and no great crisis even broke the smooth current of its course.”She fixed her eyes on the ordinary and comic life and the association of the so-called respectable middle-class families in village which she was quite familiar with, especially the experience of provincial girls hunting for husbands. She was enlivening her father's parsonage and writing about the clergy, the old maids, the short-sighted mothers, the marriageable daughters, and other people that figure in village life. There were no things in her novels about sex, violence, death, radical behavior, heroic passions, astounding adventures, dramatic conflicts ortragedies, which were always talked about by the her predecessors and her contemporary writers. The stories and the characters under her pen are all of lyrical and pastoral flavor without being influenced by the great historical change the French Revolution, which broke out in Jane Austen's time.As to Jane Austen's very style of her works, the British female Virginia Woolf said in her famous A Room of One's Own. Of all great of novelists, Jane Austen is the most difficult to catch in the act greatness. In About Austen, T. B Macaulay said: “Shakespeare is Unparallel, however, in this respect, the writer whose writing style is the most perfect as him, is undoubtedly Jane Austen. She is the pride of Great Britain.” And the comment from Sir Walter Scott is:“That young lady had a talent for describing the involvements and feelings and characters of ordinary life, which is- to me the most wonderful I ever met with. The Big Bow-wow strain I can do myself like any now going; but the exquisite touch, which renders ordinary common-place things and characters interesting, from the truth of the description and sentiment, is denied to me. What a pity such a gifted creature died so early! ”It is true that Jane Austen kept her eyes on around her and about the small world she lived in. People both in her life and in her novelspaid visits, went to balls and parties with each other and spent part of every year at Brighton, especially at Bath. Her writing was confined to a narrow and small field. However, it was right in this narrow and small field that several great novels were created, which have been popular throughout the history of literature. Therefore, Jane Austen herself compared her work to some fine engraving made upon a little piece of ivory in only two inches square.Jane Austen's words are humorous and ironic. As mentioned above, she paid great attention to the ordinary and comic life of common people in the countryside of Britain. She is good at making the characters in her novels. In an Austen novel, words and modes of discourse take on a new significance as indications of how characters will act Austen's ironic emphasis places significance upon the localities of language and situation rather than on narrative. They reflect the conceit, foolishness and absurdity of human nature like a mirror. Just as the British critic A. C Bradley has said that Jane Austen has two obvious tendencies: she was both a moralist and a humorist. In addition, Jane Austen is regarded as a realistic novelist instead of a romantic one and her novels are regarded as the first scale of generally-acknowledged British realistic novels in the nineteenth century because her emphasis on reason, propriety, anddecorum makes her closer in spirit to late-eighteenth-century Age of Reason than to the Romanticism that generally rebelled against eighteenth-century values. She concerned about the social reality of her day and as mentioned above, she succeeds in producing very vivid portraits of her major characters and in painting realistic and colorful pictures of the life and manners of the upper middle class in rural England of her time.1.2. An introduction to the novelAmong the six novels that Jane Austen has written, Pride and Prejudice is the most famous and the most popular one. So far, it has been translated into many languages and widely read. It is also adapted into films and dramas, all of which are successful. So there is no wonder that it is included in the list of the world's ten famous novels. It is a very dramatic and attractive novel. The main subject in the novel is stated in the first sentence of the novel: “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortu ne must be in want of a wife.”1 In this statement, Jane has cleverly done three things: she has declared that the main subject of the novel will be courtship and marriage. She has established the humorous tone of the novel by taking a simple subject to elaborate and to speak intelligently of, and she has prepared the reader for a chase in the novel of either a husband insearch of a wife, or a women in pursuit of a husband. The first line also defines Jane's book as a piece of literature that connects itself to the 18th century period. Pride and Prejudice belongs to the 18th century because of the emphasis on man in his social environment rather than in his individual conditions. The use of satire and wit, a common form of the 18th century literature, also contributes to label the book as a novel of the 18th century.II.The analysis of the humor in the novelJane Austen is recognized to be one of the supreme artists of the novel. It is believed that she inherits the tradition of the European way of writing a novel and develops it into a unique one of her own, which makes her novels always in among discerning readers of all classes, and time and space have never damaged her reputation. It can be manifested by T. B. Macaulay's a words: “Shakespeare has had neither equal or second, but among the writers who, …have approached nearest to the manner of the great master, we have no hesitation in placing Jane Austen, a women of whom England is justly proud.”Another renowned critic followed this assertion, saying that Jane Austen is “a prose Shakespeare”.Another critical evaluation of Jane Austen is from Goldwin Smith, Austen and Shakespeare are creative; both purely artistic;both have the marvelous power of endowing the products of their imagination with a life, as it were, apart from their own. Each holds a perfectly clear and undistorting mirror-Shakespeare to the moral universe, Jane Austen to the little world in which she lived. As what has been mentioned above, it is true that Jane Austen only writes things that she is familiar with. Her literary domain is confined to a limited sphere. That is, the triviality of the families and the neighborhood of the countryside. She never touches upon the great passion or areas of human experience like wars. She only focuses on the most common people and the most common things in her living circle. And in this limited field, she creates a multitude of characters with distinctive nature and spirit. Jane Austen is good at exposing the characters by their own folly and to Jane Austen herself, these characters, no matter good or bad, has light-hearted humor and constitute a continuous source o f the readers’ amusement. It isthis way of writing that gains her an unrivalled and everlasting reputation as a novelist, an ironist and a humorist. The characteristics of Jane Austen's humor are so subtle and delicate that they are likely to have different meaning for different people. She is conscious of the mixed human nature and she views life with a complete honesty. Her character of this kind is well reflected in her writing. And in this sense, she is a kind of cynicperson, like George Saintsbury once said: “she is certainly a cynic in the sense that, like her own Mr. Bennet, she takes an epicurean delight in dissecting, in displaying, in setting at work her fools and her mean persons.” Human absurdities and illusions, to Jane Austen, so far as they are not seriously harmful, they are altogether pleasant, because they are both ridiculous and right.Marked by a genuine good-natured sense of humor, Jane Austen's use of irony is light and amiable: She makes fun of the follies and absurdities in common life, but her irony and satires do not sound bitter in her tone. This is partly because she holds an optimistic outlook towards life and partly because she is sensible enough as not to wish things to be other than they are. And when her-characters show their vulgarity, selfishness, self-absorbed- ness and meanness, she is looking on it patiently and delightfully just like the Providence. It is irresistibly pleasant to observe her delivering providential reproofs on human fallibility. To this gentle lady, people could never be too absurd; life was never too full of humors and singularities for her taste.Jane Austen's humorous way of writing is greatly embodied in Pride and Prejudice. She fills every inch of line with intelligence, and fashions every sentence into meaning, so the whole book is sparkling with infinite wisdom and wit. In this famous novel, JaneAusten creates a lot of comic characters, such as Mr. and Mrs. Bennet, Mr. Collins, Lady Catherein, Miss Mary Bennet. As to these characters, emphasis has been put on in the previous section. And the devices employed by Jane Austen are going to be discussed in the following section.Characteristics of Jane Austen’s Humor come from a Micro-perspective. According to Attardo's idea, humor is based on punch lines realized by the manipulations of language. And it could be divided into pun, periphrasis, sarcasm, witticism, paradox, hyperbole, oxymoron, synecdoche, and spoonerism. In Pride and Prejudice, there are many devices to create a humorous effect.Another humorous device employed by Jane Austen with high frequency is hyperbole. By the author's overstating what is obviously impossible, the readers can feel the exquisite humor. His words angered Mrs. Bennet. So he asked Mrs. Bennet to forgive him. Here, Jane Austen describes it like this: “He begged pardon for having displeased her. In a softened tone she declared herself not all offended; but he continued to apologize for about a quarter of an hour.”2If we think about our daily life, maybe it will be true that one apologizes to another for several minutes, but it is unbelievable that one can apologize for "about a quarter of an hour". If we believe inwhat Jane Austen tells us, it will be misreading and we shall know the fact that it is a kind of joking exaggeration. It is these words that describe what kind of person Mr. Collins is. He is not a sensible man and his deficiency of nature has been but little assisted by education or society. The greatest part of his life has been spent under the guidance of an illiterate and miserly father, and though he belong to one of the universities, he has merely kept the necessary terms, without forming at it any useful acquaintance. Reading this, the readers can't help being amused by Mr. Collins' exaggerating behaviors.Mary hyperbole Bennet is another good example of Jane Austen to produce humorous effect. What she says and what she does bring laughter. When Lydia elopes with Mr. Wickham and when what she has done may ruin her other sisters' possibility of marrying rich men, the Bennets are distressed greatly, but Mary, indefatigable in stale moral reflections, remarks to Elizabeth:“This is a most unfortunate and will probably be much talked of. But we must stem the tide of malice, and pour into the wounded bosoms of other the balm of sisterly consolation. Then perceiving in Elizabeth no inclination of replying, she added, Unhappy as the event must be for Lydia, we may draw fromit this useful lesson: that loss of virtue in a female is irretrievable, that one false step involves her in endless ruin, that her reputation is no less brittle than it is beautiful, and that she can not be too much guarded in her behavior towards the undeserving of the other sex.Elizabeth lifted up her eyes in amazement, but was too much opposed to make any reply. Mary, however, continued to console herself with such kind of moral extractions from the evil before them.”3Mary's words are so amazing that Elizabeth lifted up her eyes in amazement. In fact, any people who are sensible will feel surprised at her seemingly moral but ridiculous words. It is a time of great Misfortune for the family, not suitable for her to show her vocabulary and knowledge. Because of not being handsome, Mary spends most of her time in reading and studying. And this furnishes her with many literary phrases, such as “stem the tide of malice”, “pour into the wounded bosom” and “the balm of sisterly consolation”. And these words are the ones that come from this bookish girl. Her opinion on morals is reflected by her saying Lydia’s el opement a s “malice”, “irretrievable”, and “endless ruin”, and also by her immediate relation between the “unhappy event” and the “useful lesson”to be drawn by the female. Here, Jane Austen employs the device of hyperbole. She exaggerates Mary's words. And her exaggerating attitudes towards the unhappy event and her complacent lecturing contrasting with the other family members’silence, her dogmatism and her stupidity are shown completely. All those cause much of our laughter. In this example, Mary's words violate the Maxim of Manner.Jane Austen relies heavily on dialogues for characterization. In Dr. Chapman's comments, She is one of the greatest, and one of the most accurate writers of dialogue of her own or any age. She did not describe her characters, but make the characters show themselves through their own dialogues and behaviors in a dramatic way. For example, when Mr. Bennet has been compelled by Mrs. Bennet to urge Elizabeth to marry Mr. Collins, his performance is dramatic enough:“Come here, child, cried her father, as she appeared. I have sent you on an affair of importance. I understand that Mr. Collins has made an offer of marriage. Is it true?” Elizabeth replied that it was.Very well-And this offer of marriage you have refused?I have, sir.Very well. We now come to the point. Your mother insists upon your accepting it. Is not it so, Mrs. Bennet?Yes, or I will never see her again. An unhappy alternative is before you, Elizabeth. From this dayyou must be a stranger to one of your parents. -Your mother will never see you again if you do not marry Mr. Collins, and I will never see you again if you do.”5In this short passage, Jane Austen shows her sense of humor greatly, and her humor is mainly reflected through Mr. Bennet's words. As a man of cynical humor and quick-wittedness, Mr. Bennet begins the conversation quite objectively. He says that it is an affair of importance, which shows his seriousness, which does not happen to him quite often. Then step by step, he asks simple and plain questions, and in the third speech of his, he uses an unhappy alternative which makes readers think that the alternative to Elizabeth is to follow her parents instruction. But when reading on, the readers will find that the alternative is whether to go against her father or against her mother. His beginning makes Mrs. Bennet believes that he is on her side, but at last, it is clear that he is right on her opposite side. It surprises Elizabeth, Mrs. Bennet and the readers. All people surprise that such a beginning will end up in this easy and funny way. He displays his viewpoint by a smart roundabout statement. He violates the Maxim of Quality, and when he expresses his scornful opinion on Mr. Collins' proposal of marriage, his tone is in a light-hearted and half joking way as usual. This scene is typical in Jane Austen's dramatic dialogue, and it reveals Mr. Bennet's wittyand cynical characters, making readers laugh wholeheartedly.III.The analysis of the characters in the novel3.1. The Satire of the characters in the novelIn the novel, it describes a group of “fool people”, and Mrs. Bennet is the most impressive one. The author describes her as: “She was a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper. When she was discontented she fancied herself nervous. The business of her life was to get her daughters married: its solace was visiting and news.”13To illustrate the personality of Mrs. Bennet, the author uses a lot of describing irony. For example, after the elopement of Lydia and Wickham, Mrs. Bennet worried about her daughter's whereabouts and the new wedding dress for her daughter. Two feelings mixed and made her afflicted.“She was now in an irritation as violent from delight, as she had ever been fidgetty from alarm and vexation. To know that her daughter would be married was enough. Stay, stay, I will go myself. Ring the bell, Kitty, for Hill. I will put on my things in a moment. My dear, dear Lydia!—How merry we shall be together when we meet!”6 This is a vivid description, which made the vivid and colorful image of Mrs. Bennet.Elizabeth refused to marry the pastor of Collins, and this "manof large fortune" was instantly robbed by neighbor (Lucas)'s daughter. Mrs. Bennet fell ill because of this blows- at least she thought she felt sick. She was not so much worried about her daughter's way, and it would be better for her by setbacks. Just then, her brother's wife visited her, and her grief turned to joy. In her word, “However, your coming just at this time is the greatest of comforts, and I am very glad to hear wha t you tell us, of long sleeves.”15 We just think that, it is the beginning of lamenting of the daughter who is not to marry. The joke, generating from the mismatch appears in every chapter of Pride and Prejudice.Except Mrs. Be nnet, Mr. Collins is the other “confused, full of illusion and self-contradictory mind” model in Austin's novels. The author mercilessly mocked her. On the one hand, he is submissive, self-esteem from cheap to his “benefactor” Lady Catherine. Let us look at the scene of playing card in the Luo Xinsi Estate: “Mr. Collins was employed in agreeing to every thing her Ladyship said, thanking her for every fish he won, and apologising if he thought he won too many. Sir William did not say much.”7 On the other hand, he is blindly confident and posturing. In front of his uncle, he looked down from above, and declared that he was ready to marry a Bennet's daughter as the benefactor of charity benefits in order to make up the damage. Firstly, his goal is Jane, the elder sister. Mrs.Bennet implied that Jane has the favorable people, and not tolerating that Elizabeth opened her mouth, Mr. Collins asserts the reason that he decided to marry Elizabeth. one of which is to make Lady Catherine happy until the guarantee “and you may assure yourself that no ungenerous reproach shall ever pass my lips when we are married.”8Although Elizabeth refused him by the most straightforward words, Mrs. Collins thought that it just is Elizabeth's following the noble women, playing hard, in order to win his love. And even Mrs. Bennet can not believe that which daughter dares to defy her “the universally acknowledged truth,” which is refusing to marry. So the two stubborn fool people congratulated with each other. Is this not a wonderful irony?3.2. The satire of the plotAustin's satirical art shows, not only on some people's theater character, and on the handling of a number of dramatic episodes, but also on the mix of the irony idea in throughout story. We list a few below:Actor Darcy initially concluded that the Bennet family has so many negative factors, and their daughters are difficult to find a man. But then he just married Elizabeth. And Elizabeth, who had vowed never to marry Darcy, finally became the wife of Mrs. Darcy. The author described Wickham as a hypocrites, rhetoric, homeless, no personality, not nervous, who only owned handsome appearance, and Elizabeth's sister, Lydia was described as a "liking pleasure, vanity, dissolute frivolous, idle", and they run away, and finally married. They became Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth's brother in law.Mr. Collins is an arrogance and flattery; he is both arrogant and a very humble character. He became the school rector because of the arrogance of the lady Catherine. After that his relentless self-righteous proposing marriage was mercilessly refused by Elizabeth. He won the favor of the smart and beautiful Miss Xia Luodi, who was Elizabeth's good friend and soon married. The mighty lady, Katherine Deboer tirelessly and personally came to threaten Elizabeth firstly, and then to admonish Darcy, in order to prevent the claim kinship between her nephew Darcy and Elizabeth. She did not know that it is just because of her action that two young people, who quietly fell in love, and passed the information, and finally was led to happy combination. The novel began with single-minded Mrs. Bennet, trying to marrying off her daughters, which is full of jokes. She is assured of the villain and ridicule object. We are held by the author, and heartily laughed at her word the universally acknowledged truth. But in the end, the development of novel fully cashed the piece of Mrs.Bennet universally acknowledged truth. Really, The wealthy bachelor always marry a lady always Bentley married Jane, Darcy married Elizabeth, Collins pastor married Charlotte ... we laugh on Mrs. Bennet at the beginning, but had to admit that she was full right.IV.ConclusionIn the book of Pride and Prejudice, the author vividly plays her ability, whether with the character description, dialogue and the plot of story, she is the master of humor and irony. It made the reader cannot help laughing and issued a heartfelt emotion. In the Jane Austen's novels, she is used to mock the attitude, and observed those characters with interest. We often treat the problem by the same view-angle as her, and also see the interesting differences between the real truth and its appearance, and the surface phenomena in front of the various roles in the story. If some readers can not feel it, they can not really understand her work. Some people even think that Austin is cynical and coldly looking at the world. However, the author is not ever cynical, and does not often like to like sarcasm. Jane Austen's irony style shows the reader her rational thinking, and find some form for her own critical attitude. Her irony reflects her disdain; her humorous sense reflects her frustration. People canresonate and inspire the more imagination, with the step of the more intensive reading on Jane Austen's works.Notes1.Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, (London.

Her literary works have far-reaching influences not only on posterity, but also on the development of society and literature. Through analysis of the plot and the characterization of figures in Pride and Prejudice, the thesis will explore irony used by Jane Austen. Her novels are filled with snide tone and sarcastic words. More than that, Jane chose to use irony in shaping characters, arrangement of the plot and the theme. Therefore, the analysis of the irony is the key to understanding this novel. In recent years, many domestic and foreign scholars devoted to Austin's fiction studies, in which ironical art is generally talked. Monaghan, David and Willis, Jane, they share the same idea. In their paper, the theme is to analyze expressions of irony in Pride and Prejudice. It focuses on irony in the three areas of characterization and character relationships. Jane Austen focus on the five marriages in the novel, applies irony at different aspects, and uses humorous words to show us her own progressive view on love and marriage. The opening sentence of Pride and Prejudice directly pointed out the most popular view on marriage in society “It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife.”The content of this sentence is really ridiculous and stupid while the sentence pattern is neat and formal. The sharp contrast between the content and form makes a great effect of irony. And irony is used many times in this novel. This thesis will discuss how irony is employed in terms of the characterization of the figures, the plot in Pride and Prejudice in the hope of better understanding the novel.12 The Introduction to Irony2.1 Definition of Irony“Irony is a rhetorical device, literary technique, or situation in which there is an incongruity between the literal and the implied meaning.” (Huang, 2010) “It is a universal phenomenon of natural language used in our daily communication. Irony is a broad term referring to the recognition of a reality different from the masking appearance. It is a contrast or a difference between the way things seem and the way they really are.” (Willis, 2006)That is to say, one says a thing but means the opposite. Irony can be divided into the following several: Verbal irony, Dramatic irony.(Skehan, 2004) No written method for indicating irony exists, though an irony punctuation mark has been proposed. In the 1580s, Henry Denham introduced a rhetorical question mark or preconditions point which looks like a reversed question mark. This mark was also proposed by the French poet Marcel Bernhardt at the end of the 19th century to indicate irony or sarcasm.2.2 The Function of IronyThe use of words that say the opposite of what you really mean, in order to be emphatic, amusing, sarcastic, etc.(Hu, 2008).Irony is a figure of speech that achieves emphasis by saying the opposite of what is meant, the intended meaning of the words being the opposite of their usual sense. It can be amusing or can show annoyance. Irony have a deeper meaning and can arouse people's sympathy.2.3 Expressions of Irony in Pride and PrejudiceIn the Pride and Prejudice, there is always a gap between what she says and what she means, between the surface meaning and her real intention. Irony is the most striking feature in Jane Austen’s novels. As an ingenious work, the master piece of Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice employs the ironic technique in characterization and structure, which has made a great realistic comic work of the novel.23 The Appreciation of Irony in CharacterizationIrony plays a decisive part in characterization as well as in plot development. In Pride and Prejudice, both the wise (Elizabeth, Mr. Darcy, etc.) and the foolish (Mrs. Bennet, Mr. Collins, etc. ) become the objects of Jane Austen’s irony. Irony is the marrow of this novel, in which no one is perfect.3.1 ElizabethElizabeth is our heroine. Pride and Prejudice was, for some time at least, Jane Austen’s own favorite and she wrote her sister when it appeared “I must confess that I think her ( the heroine, Elizabeth) as delightful a creature as ever appeared in print; and how I shall be able to tolerate those who do not like her at least I do not know.”Yet, Jane Austen spares no satire upon such a delightful creature. Elizabeth is witty, intelligent and unconventional. She “has something more of quickness than her sisters”.(Austen, 1813: 152) However, she also can’t avert herself from the influence of the “truth universally acknowledged.”(Austen, 1813: 305) Moreover, she is too hasty in judgment and too easily taken in by appearances. On the one hand, she is slighted by Mr. Darcy at a ball and then safely promises her mother never to dance with him. On the other hand, she is attracted by Mr. Wickham, whose appearance is greatly in his favor. Then she “prepared in the highest spirits for the conquest of all that remained unstudied of his heart.” (Austen, 1813: 155)The relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy is worsened by Wickham’s ill words to Darcy. Sense is overwhelmed by sensibility. On account of her prejudice against Darcy, Elizabeth tries to bring down his pride and has the satisfaction of refusing his proposal by saying that “⋯you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed on to marry.”(Austen, 1813: 179)Of course, Elizabeth finally recognizes Wickham’s true face and reveals that it is the arrogant Darcy who saves the reputation of the Bennet family by arranging Lydia and Wickham’s marriage. Then false pride is humbled and prejudice dissolved. In the end, Darcy and Elizabeth are united.Darcy, as a wise man, is another object of satire. At first, he claims that Elizabeth is not handsome enough to tempt him and says frankly that “it must very3materially lessen their chance of marrying men of any consideration in the world.”(Austen, 1813: 18). However, he is the very man who marries Elizabeth.3.2 Mr. DarcyLike Elizabeth, Darcy is an ideal character by Austen’s writing. He was arrogant by nature. For the first time seeing Elizabeth, he treated her very picky. But then he has affection for her gradually, and asked her to marry him, but he encounters flat refusal and rage given by Elizabeth. Darcy’s proposal is arrogant, Elizabeth rejected it with great prejudice. Austen’s mockery at them has played to the extreme here. Later Darcy changes his arrogant attitude; he treats Elizabeth’s relatives courteously and makes every attempt to help Lydia. Elizabeth falls in love with him, giving him second time.3.3 Mr. BennetMr. Bennet, who is smart humorous and educated man, is odd within his words. Maybe he can always give people surprise and excitement. From his words, Mr. Bennet is a man who tries to say something by feigning uninterested or making concessions but he does not say it immediately, which makes you nervous. For examples, he says, “You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it.”(Austen, 1813: 243) In the following story that Mr. Bennet notices the coming of Bingley, but he still pretends to say that he has not heard. Why he says it like this—to show humor of the old gentleman and his daughters and wife can attend him. He is a smart and educated man from the way of dealing with things and the manner of speaking. He has a high and far sight to care about his daughter’s marriage but is quiet which is very different from his wife who is unceremonious and rough. His character highlighted the rudeness of his wife. He is a smart and educated man from the way of dealing with things and the manner of speaking. He has a high and far sight to care about his daughter’s marriage but is quiet which is very different from his wife who is unceremonious and rough.3.4 Mrs. BennetMrs. Bennet is the five daughters’ mother. And she is the model of the foolish. “She was a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper. 4When she was discontented she fancied herself nervous. The business of her life was to get her daughters married; its solace was visiting and news”.(Austen, 1813: 93) Mrs. Bennet herself proves this comment true. She has not even seen Mr. Bingley, but she considers him as “the rightful property” for her daughters and thinks of his marrying one of them when she hears about that he has one hundred thousand pounds property. In addition, she is so ignorant and foolish that she can’t even realize her husband is mocking at her —“you are as handsome as any of them, Mr. Bingley might like you the best of the party.” (Austen, 1813: 171). “My dear, you flatter me. I certainly have had my share of beauty, ⋯” (Austen, 1813: 127) When Mr. Bennet refers to Mr. Collins, his cousin, “Who, when I am dead, may turn you all out of this house as soon as he pleases.”(Austen, 1813: 291)Mrs. Bennet cried, “Oh, my dear, I cannot bear to hear that mentioned. Pray do not talk of that odious man.”(Austen, 1813: 149) But when Mr. Collins plans to choose one of her daughters as his wife, she “treasured up the hint, and trusted that she might soon have two daughters married; and the man whom she could not bear to speak of the day before was now high in her good graces.”. (Austen, 1813: 164)What a capricious woman she is! Although Jane Austen made few comments on her characters, the readers know the characters gradually by listening to their voice and observing their behavior.3.5 Mr. CollinsHis each word, each movement and each attempt embodies the bitter satire upon him. After he arrives at Mr. Bennet’s punctually, “he had not been long seated before he complimented Mrs. Bennet on having so fine a family of daughters; said he had heard much of their beauty, but that, in this instance, fame had fallen short of the truth; and added that he did not doubt her seeing them all in due time well disposed of in marriage”.(Austen, 1813: 256)How perfect and unrivaled gallantry. When Elizabeth refuses his proposal, he concludes “you are not serious in your rejection of me, I shall choose to attribute it to your wish of increasing my love by suspense, according to the usual practice of elegant females”.(Austen, 1813: 178) This scene fully displays Jane Austen’s talent for comedy. What’s more interesting andattractive is that Jane Austen never stops ridiculing Mr. Collins even though he has got married. When Elizabeth calls at his parsonage, she “was prepared to see him in his glory; and she could not help fancying that in displaying the good proportion of the room, its aspect and its furniture, he addressed himself particularly to her, as if wishing to make her feel what she had lost in refusing him.”.(Austen, 1813: 153)Thus, Mr. Collins’hypocrisy, self - deception and foolishness are portrayed most vividly.3.6 Miss. BingleyMiss. Bingley has attractive appearance, but in fact is a jealous, behaved badly, arrogant person. The author portrays her character using satire. She is a self-considered person; she only considers her own interests, ruining her brother’s happiness. She writes letters for several times to provoke the relationship between Darcy and Jane. She also slanders Elizabeth in front of her bother for many times. And her interference makes the two couples almost break up. Author, in the description of this kind of characters, not only seizes the opportunity to give the sarcasm, but also lets them have a sharp contrast in appearance and heart, words and actions to expose their hypocrisy.3.7 Mrs. CatherineMrs. Catherine was another person to be mocked. For fearing that Darcy would marry Elizabeth, she personally runs to the Bennets to warn Elizabeth not to marry Mr. Darcy. And after being counterattacked by Elizabeth, she goes to Darcy to persuade him not to marry Elizabeth. However, she does not achieve her purpose but contributes to the happy marriage between Elizabeth and Darcy. The contrast between plots achieves the ironic effects. And Mrs. Catherine’s folly and peremptoriness were portrayed incisively and vividly. What’s worse, Mrs. Catherine was once described as a kind, easy going and generous noblewoman by Mr. Collins. But in fact, she was arrogant, domineering and unreasonable. Mr. Collins and Mrs. Catherine only pay attention to the economic interests. The contrast achieved the goal of irony: Mr. Collins was hypocritical, pea cockish and snobbish and Mrs. Catherine was domineering, overbearing and insolent. In conclusion, Austen used the most refined language to portray characters, This kind of irony is not just mocking words, it also expose people’s relationship around the reality. Therefore it plays a key role in shaping the character. It shows that the author has the most thorough understanding of human nature and makes the novel filled with wit and humor.4 Application of Irony in the Marriage PlotThe novel’s satire is not only in some characterization, but also in many of the plot, especially about marriage. “I t is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife”. (Austen, 1813:5) Jan Austin uses irony on four couples of young men and women to revealing the marriages at the time of the bourgeois society.4.1 Mr. Collins’ Proposal to Marry ElizabethIt is a really big irony when Mr. Collins proposes to Elizabeth. The proposal process is just like a farce. “Now that he had a home and a considerable income, he had decided to marry. The Bennet girls, who would lose their inheritance because of him, had a reputation fir being attractive and charming, and his idea of making amends to them was to marry one of them. He considered this an excellent plan, and thought himself extremely generous and unselfish in carrying it out.” (Austen, 1813: 193) Besides this, when Elizabeth refuses to marry him, he just thinks that why Elizabeth does so is just for getting more love from him. The result of this farce is totally different from what the overweening Mr. Collins had thought. This made an exhibition of himself.4.2 The Marriages of Lydia Bennet and Mr. WickhamThe marriage of Lydia Bennet and Mr. Wickham is one of the most absurd and the least optimistic marriage. Their marriage is indulging in the erotic feeling. (Wang, 2002:23)Mr. Wickham is Mr.Darcy’s old housekeeper’s son. To outward seeming, he is casual and elegant bearing, but actually he is a dandy. Lydia Bennet is the youngestdaughter and her behavior is always chameleonic. She doesn't know how to maintain good character and just love to dance, visit the millinery shop, chase officers. She inherited her mother's beauty, but also inherited his mother's stupidity and vanity. Although only 15 years old, she was too preoccupied with love and romance. When she meets Wickham who has a charming appearance, graceful bearing, but actually morally corrupt. She was confused by his appearance and followed him to elope. Marie who has always been considered the most stupid one of the five sisters, made a moral comment about their marriage .The irony here is self-evident.Though Darcy help Wickham repay the high debt and bought him a position and also saved face name for Lydia, their marriage is not happy. The marriage established in lust is immoral and could not get happiness. Their marriage is for money, the beautiful appearance. they ignore the love and the economical conditions. At the end of the novel, the couple often rely on borrowing to maintain life. This can be regarded as the punishment and satire that is given by the author. The author depicts the marriages of Lydia Bennet and Mr. Wickham to satirize the ridiculous apolaustic marriage.4.3 The Marriage of Mr. Collins and Charlotte LucasAfter this ridiculous proposal, Mr.Collins turns to ask Charlotte to marry him. Mr. Collins chooses Charlotte to be his wife, apparently not because of falling in love with her. It is a big irony that their marriage is only for money and society position. He has his fat her’s estate, the priest position and only wants a family's wife.Charlotte, the eldest daughter of Sir William, is 27 years old and is not beautiful. As for the young girl like her who has a good education but less property, the only respectable way out is to get married. What she wants is only a husband who can give her stable residential and money. So when he asks her to marry him, she agrees immediately. After marrying Collins, Charlotte gets a house, a small garden and the furniture. Charlotte said: “If you forget Mr.Collins, the house is really very comfortable.”(Austen, 1813: 193) In those words, the author exposes their tragic marriage through the mouth of Charlotte herself. It can be said that the person who Charlotte married is not Collins but his estate. Their marriage is purely based on theeconomic basis, no happiness. The description of the Charlotte marriage reflects the tragic fate of women at that time. Author expressed her great sympathy for those women who are forced by economics to marry somebody they do not love.Charlotte and Collins’ marriage story is revealing the very true remark: “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”(Austen, 1813:5) This very true remark is totally a sarcasm according to the marriage of Charlotte and Collins.4.4 The Marriage of Mr. Darcy and ElizabethMr. Darcy thinks that Elizabeth’s social status and family background could not match his, and there was no chance for them to get married. But when he finally loves Elizabeth, all the unfavorable factors could not stop him from loving her. But to Elizabeth, when they meet first, He left arrogance impression to her. And this impression then become bias. After hearing William’s judgment to Mr. Darcy, Elizabeth;s blind prejudice become deeper .So when obtrusive Darcy said: “In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feeling will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”(Austen, 1813:241). ,Elizabeth just feels hatred caused by prejudice. Darcy also stated his opinions on her. He felt her family low and degrading. His propose is condescending. His voice was very excited, as if he has made great sacrifices. What Darcy does and says is tally with the values of the British society at that time. The reader may feel ridiculous to such arrogant Darcy, this is not only the satire to the role, but also the irony to the absurd concept of marriage . But to Elizabeth, she feels unbelievable and she says, “You are the last man in the world whom I could ever be persuaded to marry”(Austen, 1813: 21). But later, when all the misunderstandings are cleared up, and Mr. Darcy changes his “arrogant”attitude, Elizabeth falls in love with Darcy at once. And after Darcy’s second proposal, she promises his proposal, and finally turns to be Mrs. Darcy. Darcy’s and Elizabeth’s attitudes toward each other have a deeply ironic meaning.Their love is the main story of this novel. And the irony is filled in their contact and conversation.Vanity and pride is human weakness, but when the pride person has a noble heart, his arrogance will become sober. To sum up, four marriages have four endings. That Austen arranges the ending of the story has rack her brains. “In Pride and prejudice, it can be said, Austen thinks that love and marriage get along swimmingly with each other, indivisible, love is essential to a happy marriage.”(Fan, 2010: 231). Although the beauty can give people a good impression, only an independent personality and good character can have lasting appeal. Because of the special social status of women at that time, when talking about marriage, family and money can not be ignored. Austen has a exposure. But this kind of disclosure, in this comedy of the novel, is not aggressive, sad or morally indignant, also not cynical, sarcastic. It is irony. The authors describe four kinds of marriage mode with irony, it is a reflection of British society marriage values at that time. It also mocks at the people at that time who value money too much and ignore that the real happiness is the emotional communication in marriage.5 ConclusionIrony is employed in Pride and Prejudice as the lens through which society and human nature are viewed. It is well infiltrated into plots and characterization. In Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen’s irony has developed into an instrument of discrimination between the people who are simple reproductions of their social type and people with individuality who will between the unaware and the aware. Her irony contained her understanding of life and society. So it can be said that irony is the sharpest weapons used in Austen’s novels.(Word count total: 4,230)References:[1]范(Fan)丽娜. 2002.[7]Peter, Skehan.A Cognitive Approach to Language Learning.Ox-ford University Press,15March 2004.[8]Lambert, L, et al.
