Today I want to tell you all about the really cool intangible cultural heritage we have right here on our campus. What's intangible cultural heritage you ask? Well, it's all the awesome traditions, stories, knowledge, and skills that have been passed down from our ancestors and elders. It's the fun and interesting stuff that makes our community and school unique!One of my favorite examples is the legend of Maple Lane itself. Did you know that our school is built on what used to be an old maple tree farm? Way back in the 1800s, there was this family that owned a huge maple syrup business. Their trees covered acres and acres of land in our town. The owners had a dozen kids who all learned the tricks of maple sugaring from their parents. When it came time for the farm to be sold off piece by piece, the owners decided to donate a section of the land to build a new school. And that's how Maple Lane Elementary was born! And the best part is, it all gets recorded so we can keep those stories safe for future generations. My favorite grandparent speaker so far was Mrs. Tanaka, who is 102 years old! She told us all about growing up on a strawberry farm in California and making intricate origami cranes for good luck with her grandma.Our school's intangible heritage isn't just from long ago though. Sometimes it comes from cultures that are still being created right now! Take Isaac's mom for example. Ms. Garcia is a pro gamer who plays in international esports competitions. She's been teaching Isaac and some of his friends the skills and strategies behind competitive video gaming. They even formed the first ever Esports Club here at Maple Lane. Every week, they get together for team practices, analyzing gameplay footage, and prepping for online tournaments. I don't totally understand it all yet, but I can see that esports has its own language, values, and traditions being created in real-time. enriching school culture and displaying ourselves
recently, our school has held this cultural festival in order to deepen and intensify the construction of a harmonious and humane school.
in my opinion, the school is the place for us to study, a big classroom for “implied education” and also a platform for students to perform humanism.
the modernization of our school means magnificent buildings, modern equipments and ample schoolyard, but even the integration into them a thought—a modern concept on operating school and a distinctive school culture.
we shall fully utilize the natural environment of the
school and promote “a movement of ecological culture”. by re-establishing the relation of people and the nature, we can gradually accomplish the personality shaping with a spirit of ecology. we can integrate the construction of school culture into the rich cultural essence so that every people in the school can hear birds sing, smell flowers giving forth fragrance and breathe the thick cultural flavor.
“entering a room with fragrance of orchid, we can also be sweet-smelling.” on the grassland, we paved the paths with colorful stones, which not only make walking convenient but also add human touch to the plain grasslands. on a sunny day with pleasant wind, sitting or lying on the grassland gives people much joy.
our school dotted the schoolyard with some mountain stones of various shapes, square or round and with different postures, lying or standing.
in this way we have made changes to the virescence of our school. our teachers gave each of these stones a name so that they can even “talk”. our school seems as a natural amusement park, integrating the geographical sceneries with human and ecological ones.。
