Everyone needs a break, and vacations are not meant for serious study. Instead, they’re a great way to take a break and enjoy a good book. The Spring Festival is coming up so this is the perfect time to discuss some great English language literature to take on a long train journey or while you’re hanging out with the family. Before getting into the recommendations, we need to determine your English reading comprehe nsion level so you don’t pick a book which is so challenging that it’s stressful or so simple that it’s boring. If you’re at the beginner level, there are two options: reading a children’s book or reading a book that you’ve read in Chinese translation. Th is will help you get over any unfamiliar words or phrases, since you’re already familiar with the story. If you’re at the intermediate level, popular books like pop fiction, mysteries and thrillers are good options, as they’ll be guaranteed page turners and that will increase the possibility of your getting all the way through the book. For advanced readers, science fiction, classic works of literature or contemporary prize winners (Booker, Nobel, Pulitzer)are good options. The most important thing is to pick a book that you’re really interested in. When I pick up a new book in Chinese, the first few chapters are always really hard to get through, as I have to get accustomed to the way the individual author uses the language. But after the first few chapters, things get a lot easier, especially if I get involved in the story. Some of my favorite Chinese-language eye candy are books that are series like Brothers by Yu Hua or The Dancer by Hai Yan. I like them because there’s always a lot of action and story development to keep me involved, which helps me make it through those first few chapters.Another great way to keep yourself motivated over the holiday is to find a friend who’s interested in reading the same book. You can make goals that you both want to achieve anddiscuss plot lines or vocabulary issues with each other by SMS or e-mail. I’m currently doing that with my friend Laura. We’ve been doing this since we were classmates in Chinese at college. Some quick recommendations: Harry Potter, start with the first book and go on from there; the Narnia series; anything by US writer Michael Crichton or British writer Agatha Christie; and if you like horror, US writer Stephen King is always unusual and fun. But really you should just find a topic or author that you’re interested in, and the rest will go from there. Happy reading!-from 21st Century(January 21, 2009)Title Enjoy English language literature on vacationTheme Find a good book to read on your journey to a (1) ___________ place.(2) ____________ of proper books ●Beginners may pick a children’s book or a book whose story is (3) ____________ to them.●Poplar books might make it (4) ____________for intermediate-level readers to read them from cover to cover.●Science fiction, classic works of literature or contemporary prize winners may be (5) _____________ for advanced readers.Ways to keep up your (6) ____________ for reading ●Choose a book that is interesting enough to (7) ____________ you in the story and help get through some difficult chapters .●Read along with a friend a book you both feel interested in and (8) _____________views on plot lines or vocabulary to achieve your common goals.Books (9) ________ ●Harry Potter series●Narnia series●Works by Michael Crichton●Works by Agatha Christie●(10) _____________ fiction by Stephen King(B)Ambition is a necessary quality in life. It is the force which drives us on to use whatever ta lent we have got. If we haven’t got some degree of ambition, these talents will not be used for our own and other’s benefit. We must continually want to be better than we are. Without ambition we are just jellyfish that flop through life. We only react to events; we don’t try to control them.Ambition, however, can have several defects.First of all it can be unrealistic. We may not be able to see the limits of our own abilities, so we do ambitious things that are completely beyond us. Our career masters can see our good qualities and our limitations objectively. They may tell us that we haven’t the ability to deal with people and would make good businessmen. We refuse to take their evaluation. We keep on trying. Many years and many disappointments later we are forced to accept their judgment. But what a waste of time our ill-founded ambition has caused us!Secondly, our ambition can be too concentrated. We devote our attention to one narrow aim, such as getting distinctions in our science subjects. Everything that may draw us away from this aim is cut out of our lives. In the end we get our distinctions. But what damage we have caused ourselves in the process! We are isolated beings who only care about a particular examination. And we probably won’t make g ood scientists. We lack the breadth of view necessary for success in higher studies.Thirdly, our ambition can be limited to lifeless objectives. We want to gain money, or power, or membership of some circles. Persons who feel inferior try to make up by seeking the respect of others through possessions of these artificial signs of worth.Fourthly, our ambition may be self-centered. Instead of directing some of our ambition towards community improvement we may exploit members of the community in the interests of self-advancements. In later life we may be ambitious for the success of our children but we regard this success as only a further mark of our own success.Ambition is necessary in the lives of individuals---necessary for their own improvement and for the improvement of the community in which they live. But, like all blind forces, it must be directed if it is not to cause disaster. It must be tightly controlled by the head and the heart. Otherwise ambition may demand too high a price in terms of human qualities.Title AmbitionMerit With an ambition in our heart, we’re always trying our best to use our talent to1.___________ ourselves, thus2._____________ ourselves and others. 2019届高考英语阅读理解限时训练题10
高三英语阅读理解限时训练(10)AThere are a lot of things that happen to me in China but would certainly never happen in the US. One of those things is being called “strong”.The first time was last December. I was walking across the high school campus in Guangzhou where I taught when a student in a gray scarf waved hello. I smiled and waved back, but then she stopped and called my name. “You’re so strong!”She smiled and pointed at what appeared to be my arm.I looked down at my arms. let’s get one thing clear: I’m a very skinny guy. Once, while rehearsing for a high school talent show, I was told by the teacher in charge that I could n’t participate in the men’s shirtless dance routine because my visible rig cage(胸腔) would frighten the audience.“I’m so what?”“You’re so strong!”she repeated. “Um, thanks!”I didn’t know what else to say, so we both waved goodbye. The next morning I stepped into my oral English classroom only to be greeted instantly by a unanimous(异口同声的) “Waaa!”of shock and admiration. “What?” I asked. “You’re so strong!” shouted a boy from the back of the class.“Okay, will someone tell me what that means?” I was curious as to thereal reason for such praise. So I turned to the monitor, gesturing for him to speak.“We just mean, you look very strong today,” he offered earnestly. “What?! You mean like this?”I curled(卷起) my arm like a body-builder.“No! But it’s so cold, and you’re only wearing a short-sleeve shirt.”Oh, I got it. My “strength” had less to do with my muscle and more to do with my apparent ignorance of the cold weather.41. From the passage we can learn that the author is _______.A. a Chinese studentB. an American studentC. a Chinese teacherD. an American student42. The author used the example of being refused to join in the dance routine to show that ______.A. many people worry about his bad healthB. he is as strong as a body builderC. actually he isn’t physically strong at allD. being called “strong” often happens to him43. The underlined word “she” in the 4th paragraph refers to ______.A. the girl he met on the campusB. the teacher in charge of the dance routineC. the girl who joined in the rehearsingD. a stranger he met on the way to work44. Which of the following is the best title for this passage?A. The Chinese Culture or the Western CultureB. Am I Strong or Do I Need a SweaterC. How I Can Get Stronger in WinterD. How We Can Tell Two Different Cultures ApartBEvery New Year brings renewed expectation fro change, for a better life and for a better you. That’s a wonderful thing, because this fresh start gives us a chance to reinvent our lives and ourselves. Here’s how.Let goMany times we are held back by our previous failures, emotions and barriers. This is all old baggage. Let everything unhappy from the past go. Let go of failures. Let go of fears you’ve built up. Let go of your ideas about what your life had to be like. Let go of long-held beliefs and habits which seem to be burdens to you.Clear away distraction(分心)Clear away email, your favourite blogs and news websites. Clear away the Iphone or Blackberry, and clear away all the chores that pull at your attention. In fact, if you can, shut off the Internet for a while. You can come back to it after you take a break.Decide what matters most todayForget about your goals for all of this year. Instead, decide what you want to do today. What matters most to you and your life? What are you most passionate about right now? What excites you? What gives you the most fulfillment? Often the answer would be in creating something, making something new, helping others, becoming a better person, and working on a project that you will be proud of. But whatever you answer, have it clear in your mind at the beginning of the day.Reinvent yourself every dayEvery day, you are reborn. Reinvent yourself and your life. Do what matters most to you. It might be the same thing that mattered most yesterday, or it might not be. That isn’t important. What’s important is today—right now! Live a Better Life in Every New DayCWhen you hear the word “recycling”, what comes to your mind? The color green or global warming? What if I were to tell you there is a dark side of recycling? A type of recycling that does more than good. The dark side of recycling has nothing to do with the environment but rather has a lot to do with the recycling of ideas.Environmental unrest isn’t the only trouble we must face. Idea pollution is quickly becoming widespread across the online world.Think about it. When was the last time you read an original blog post? I’m guessing it has been quite a while. Why do you think top bloggers(博主) of today win so much respect? Do you think they recycle their ideas? With each recycled idea the online world becomes much more polluted. Used content contributes to the ever increasing mass of digital smog(烟雾).The first step to reduce pollution is simple: stop recycling. When you stop recycling, you will then be forced to take up the task of creating from your own ideas. When you recycle an excellent idea, it soon becomes good. When you recycle a good idea, it soon becomes just OK. The chain continues until the key part of what used to make the idea good is satutared(饱和), leaving you nothing but a pile of mess.In order not to pollute, your ideas must go beyond “just recycled”. Your ideas must stand out from the pollution of the web. For your voiceand talent to be heard and seen, you must go far beyond the standard copy of your neighbour s’ ideas. For the next week, make a promise not to recycle. Let your ideas flourish and flow. Believe in your ability to create, because the death of recycling starts with YOU.49. Which is true about top bloggers of today according to the writer?A. They often recycle their ideas.B. They tend to express many fresh ideas.C. They are not worth much respect.D. They make good use of others’ ideas.50. The 5th paragraph mainly talks about ______.A. the bad effects of recycling ideas.B. the good effects of stopping recyclingC. how to stop recycling good ideas onlineD. how to recycle good ideas online51. This passage is written mainly for _______.A. top bloggersB. common bloggersC. environmental pollutersD. net researchers52. The main purpose of this passage is _______.A. to remind people to pay attention to environmental protectionB. to prove that the web environment is becoming worse and worseC. to warn people not to pollute our web environment with bad wordsD. to call on people to write online more creatively instead of repeatingDWhen most people think of giant pandas, the pictures of the cute, black-and-white bears from China that eat bamboo will immediately jump into their mind. Scientists from Mississippi State University, however, are interested in what the bears leave behind: their poop(排泄物). At a recent meeting in Denver, Professor Brown at the university presented her research showing how panda poop could inspire a new way to obtain energy from plants, which are a renewable energy source. Usually, plants can be called biomass(有机燃料) when they are used as an energy source.Burning biomass is one way to capture its energy, but Brown hopes panda poop can teach scientists something about breaking down biomass. Pandas—or at least the bacteria in their stomachs—are very good at getting energy out of bamboo. Unlike cows, which use 4 stomachs to digest large amounts of grass, a panda has only one stomach. Bamboo comes in, and poop goes out.Every day for 14 months, Brown and her team on this project, counted the bacteria in the poop of the two pandas, YaYa and LeLe living at the Memphis Zoo. Her studies turned up 12 species of bacteria that break down biomass, including one that had never been found in pandas. Brown says that because the poop contains bacteria that break down biomass, it could also be used to break down other types of biomass. Now the scientists hope to identify the chemicals that help with the process of breaking down biomass and then figure out how the bacteria work. If those chemicals can be made in the lab, they could be used to turn biomass—like grass or other plants—into fuel.Brown says she doesn’t mind handling panda poop. “It’s probably the most pleasant material to work with,”she says, “My colleagues and I have been working with other poop for a long time, and we can assure you it has a fairly pleasant smell associated with it.”53. The importance of studying panda poop is _______.A. to create a renewable energy from plantsB. to explore a new way to get energy from plantsC. to learn a lesson of energy from panda poopD. to figure out how the bacteria work for us mankindb, d, a, c55. What does the author mainly want to express in the 2nd paragraph?A. Pandas don’t digest bamboo the same way as cows.B. Pandas are capable of getting energy using stomachs.C. Pandas can get energy from bamboo more efficiently.D. Scientists have learnt something new from panda poop.56. What does Professor Brown think of working with panda poop?A. SickB. ChallengingC. InspiringD. EnjoyableEBright red post boxes, the Queen and queuing—what do they all have in common? They are all important parts of British life. At least I thoughtso. However, the ability to queue for long periods of time, once believed to be a traditional characteristic of the British, is no longer tolerated by people in the UK, according to a survey done for British bank Barclays. Once upon a time, queuing was seen as normal. During World War II, everyone had to queue up to receive their daily supply of foods. In fact, if you didn’t stand up and wait in line with all the others, it was seen as uncivilized(不文明的).The famous English double-decker buses, with only one entrance, might also help explain why queuing was seen as a part of British line. Almost always, there is a queue to get on.But perhaps the British are tired of being pushed past by the Spanish, the Italians or the French as they queue up to get a table at a restaurant. The people of these other European countries have more than one entrance to their houses, which explains their more relaxed attitude to the queue. Two minutes is now the longest time most British people are prepared to stand and wait. But could it be that the Internet, which allows us to carry out tasks quickly, is the main reason why British people are no longer prepared to queue?“Used to buying without delay, customers are even giving up purchases rather than wait their turn,” says Stuart Neal of Barclaycard. “Shoppers are also less likely to queue for long if the item they are buying is of low value.”Perhaps I will have to replace “queuing” with “impatience” in my list of things I relate to the British.57. What can we learn about the tradition of queuing in Britain?A. It was a product of the slow pace of life.B. It was a long time tradition as old as the Queen.C. It was considered a symbol of a civilized behavior.D. It has made the British different from other Europeans.58. According to the passage, the British gradually stopped queuing because _______.A. they prefer shopping onlineB. they follow the example of foreignersC. British buses have more than one entranceD. the Internet has changed their way of life59. It can be learned from the text that _______.A. the British get impatient with queuing for longB. the British have to queue to receive foodC. the British like to eat in foreign restaurantsD. the British prefer to take double-decker buses60. The author’s main purpose of writing the passage is ________.A. tell us the influence of the Internet on the British ways of lifeB. to compare the cultural difference between Britain and other countriesC. to talk about the changes in the attitude to queuing in BritainD. to report his research on the British ways of life41-45 DCABD 46-50 BDCCA 51-55 BDBCC 56-60 DCDAC。

If so, a special reading programme that helps match(匹配)sounds with letters could speed up your brain. At least one out of every five elementary school students in the U.S. has trouble learning to read, even when the students are good at other subjects. The biggest challenge for many of these kids, scientists say, is matching sounds with letters.Researchers from Yale University(耶鲁大学), U. S.,studied a group of children from New York and Connecticut State. As part of the study, 37 struggling readers received special tutoring.Every day, instructors worked with them on recognizing how written letters represent units of sound called phonemes(音素). The students also practiced reading aloud and spelling.By the end of the school year, these children could read faster than before. They also made fewer mistakes, and understood more of what they read than they could earlier in the year.As part of their study, the researchers used a special machine to take action photos of the students' brains. The pictures showed an increase in activity in the back of the brain on the left side. This is the same part of the brain that becomes active when good readers read. This activated brain area appears to include a structure(结构)that helps people recognize familiar written words quickly. In lower level readers, this structure remains inactive.A year later, the brain structure was still working in the students who had gone through the special tutoring, and they continued to do well in reading tests. Another group in the study who went through a more traditional reading programme didn't show the same progress. However, some researchers still doubt the study. They believe that reading without making any noise or linking words to sounds is more efficient. 56.The reading programme talked about in this passage is designed specially to help________.A.young pupils who are backward in general subjectsB.elementary students who can't match sounds with lettersC.elementary students whose brain structure is inactiveD.small pupils who have difficulty in reading57.The programme talked about in the passage seems to________.A.improve students' ability in studyingB.improve students' ability in reading aloudC.activate the brain area on the left sideD.activate the brain area on the right side58.The researchers who doubt the programme believe that students should________.A.reading aloudB.read silentlyC.match sounds with lettersD.improve their reading ability naturally59.The underlined word “tutoring”in the last passage has a similar meaning to________.A.training B.effect C.struggle D.purpose阅读表达Basketball is one of the few sports whose exact origin is definitely known. In the winter of 1891-1892, Dr. James Naismith, an instructor in the YMCA Training College (now Springfield college) at Springfield, Mass., deliberately invented the game of basketball in order to provide indoor exercise and competition for the students between the closing of the football season and the opening of the baseball season. He affixed peach baskets overhead on the walls at opposite ends of the gymnasium and organized teams to play his new game in which the purpose was to toss an association(soccer) ball into the other basket. Because Dr. Naismith had eighteen available players when he invented the game, the first rule was:” There shall be nine players on each side.” Later the number of players became optional, _____ the size of the available court, but the five-player standard was adopted when the game spread over the country. US soldiers brought basketball to Europe in World War I, and it soon became a worldwide sport.1. what‟s the best title of the passage?(please answer within ten words)___________________________________________________________2. which sentence in the passage can be replaced by the following one? There were 18 players available for Dr. Naismith, so each side had nine players at first.___________________________________________________________3.Please fill in the blank with proper words or phrases to complete the sentence.___________________________________________________________4.
