Image data are acquired by means of newesttechnology CCD cameras. Especially in the case of glass inspection, cameras with high resolution and high sensitivity are in use. As a result, these systems will be adapted optimally to varying requirements in material width, line speed and resolution. The modular design is also valid for computer technology. A typical computer configuration uses a master PC to link the system to the periphery and to control any number of slave PCs. To detect and classify defects, the software may chose out of a considerably feature list, which characterizes the position, size, form and gray level behavior of a defect. Defects will not only be recognized and classified. Additionally, defects are recorded, documented and stored. A precise defect map is generated, where all defects according to their position in width and length are listed. The protocol is shown graphically on the operator monitor and is updated continuously. Using standard computer network technology, the production and/or quality assurance staff may get an overview of the production at a glance. Standardized software interfaces for commercial office programs facilitate documentation and processing of the obtained data. Ever increasing production throughput (higher speed, greater width) and ever increasing quality levels (smaller defects) make a visual inspection impossible. An additional benefit is the automatic generation of a quality protocol; therefore product quality is documented and archived.
