Comprehension CheckFocusing on the main ideasWhy do friendships end? The author offers some insights into thequestion. Friendships end because the situations friends are in change. These changes can't help but affect a friendship. Next, the friends themselves may change. The breakups can be mutual or one-sided. It hurts less when both friends change. What tends to hurt most is whenjust one friend changes. A third reason is that as much as two people might want a friendship to survive, one or both of them might unintentionally neglect it. Lastly, conflicts can cause the end of afriendship, since most friendships have breaking points under pressure.Digging into detail1. Why do some friendships end, no matter how much you want them to last?2. When you decide to relocate for a new school or job, this can't help but affect a friendship. Likewise, if a friend of yours is inan accident, develops an illness, or loses someone close, these situations can't help but affect a friendship. These events can end friendships if the necessary adjustments are not made.3. For example, when one or both friends start to date or get married, their friendship may come to an end. It hurts less whenboth friends want to do so. It tends to hurt most when just one friend changes.4. Friendship needs regular care. T aking a friendship for granted can cause it to break.5.

She began to dream of becoming a cartoon artist from her childhood. To her disappointment, her parents strongly opposed her career choice, because the cost of her education would be too high for the poor family, and they were worried about the job opportunities for a cartoon artist. However, Li Hui would not change her mind. She worked hard to perfect her skills and searched persistently for ways to realise her dream. Just before she finished high school, the chance came: a famous art school was holding a cartoon drawing competition. The first three winners would be given a scholarship to study cartoon drawing at the school. Li Hui told herself not to let the chance slip through her fingers. She readily participated and won the second place. She is now studying there and I feel certain that her dream will come true. (156 words)2) People may have different opinions about the key factors for success. Write a short essay (ofabout 150 words) and share your opinions with your classmates.Sample essay:In my opinion, before a person becomes successful, he or she should fully understand the basic elements of success: competence, determination and optimism. For a person to succeed, he or she has to face great competition and excel in his or her chosen career. The person needs to demonstrate and prove his or her competence in dealing with problems. Without competence, the person can neither stand out among the crowd nor attract the attention of those who hold the keys to the doors of opportunity and advancement.Yet ability alone cannot guarantee success. Often enough, things do not go the way we have planned and failure is unavoidable no matter how intelligent or capable we may be. In such cases one needs to remain firm and optimistic, always believing that hard work will eventually pay off. If the person gives up halfway, success will never knock at the door. (149 words)。

Key to Extended Writing Skills and Practice1) The ability to write well-organized, concise paragraphs is essential to a student’s success in almost all university courses. (Topic Sentence)In preparing scientific reports of laboratory experiments, a student must present his or her findings in logical order and clear language in order to receive a favorable evaluation of his work. In writing successful answers to essay questions on history or anthropology examinations, a student must arrange the relevant facts and opinions according to some accepted pattern of paragraph structure. And certainly in writing a book report for English, or a critique for political studies, or a term paper for sociology, a student must pay attention to the style and organization as well as the content. (Developing sentences) Clearly, skill in expository writing is crucial to successful achievement in most university subjects. (Concluding sentence)2) This term several useful and interesting courses have been offered.(Topic Sentence)An introduction to European Culture, for instance, gives us a lot of background knowledge of the history of European philosophy, literature, and arts. From time to time we see slide shows of famous paintings and hear tapes of famous pieces of music, and they make the lectures all the more interesting. American Society and Culture is another course that attracts a large audience. The teacher, who visited the United States not long ago, discusses new trends and changes in American life as well as American history and traditions. (Developing sentences)We like these and other courses very much, because they help us not only to improve our English but also to broaden our vision. 【Key to T ranslation】
例句1
Another attempt, and you’ll succeed.

Plastics is made from water which is a natural resource inexhaustible and available everywhere, coal which can be mined through automatic and mechanical processes at less cost and lime which can be obtained from the calcinations of limestone widely present in nature.

Plastics is made from water, coal and lime; water, coal和lime之后各有一个定语从句,其中的后两个定语从句还是被动语态。

It was still thought unusual in some places that programs could be called up by viewers to be displayed on their TV screens at home.

【分析】原文中有三个被动语态形式was thought, could be called up, to be displayed, 都译成了汉语的主动语态:“认为”、“打电话”和“播放”。

例句4
Everybody here has a chance to study unless he doesn’t want to.

Everybody has a responsibility to the society of which he is a part and through this to mankind.

其实,该句是在this 后省略了前面出现的“everybody has a responsibility ”(符合省略的规则),this指“the society”。

They wanted a generation of Americans conditioned to loyalty and duty.

He hated failure; he had conquered it all his life, risen above it, and despised it in others.

Behaviorists, in contrast, say that differences in scores are due to the fact that blacks are often deprived of many of the educational and other environmental advantages that whites enjoy.

She is a good beginner in computer.

There was something wild, even a little aimless, about this pacing up and down, a kind of clue as to the chaos of his thoughts.
