燕子的尾巴像剪刀，把握方向保平衡。
啄木鸟的尾巴像铆钉，铆在树上好啄虫。

壁虎被敌人发现了，甩掉尾巴快逃跑动物的尾巴形形色色，尽管长短粗细不一样，但几乎所有的动物都有，而且用途也不一样。
动物尾巴的主要作用在于：平衡作用：猫的尾巴使猫在跑跳时能保持平衡，还能使它在肚皮朝天、四脚朝上、往下落时翻过身来，四脚先着地，不至于摔伤。
袋鼠无论是跑，还是跳，都靠两条后腿，这样就不容易平衡，是尾巴帮了它的大忙。
猴子、松鼠的尾巴使它在树枝上跳跃时能够保持平衡，从来不会失足。
马奔驰时尾巴起到很好的平衡作用。
鸟把尾巴当作飞行器。
鸟的尾巴上，长着又长又宽的羽毛，这些羽毛展开时好像扇子，能够灵活转动，便于掌握飞行方向。
在飞行时，鸟尾巴起着舵的作用。
保安作用：穿山甲的尾巴缠在树上，像保险带一样。
鳄鱼的尾巴非常有力，像铁棍子一般结实，可当作武器来防御和进攻，一般的野兽如狮和豹都经不起它的一击。
水里的河狸遇到危险时，会用尾巴拍水，发出“劈啪”的响声，向同伴报警。
牛、马、驴、骡的尾巴用用来驱赶讨厌的苍蝇、蚊虫和牛虻等。
啄木鸟在竖直的树干上站着啄食害虫时，尾巴支撑在树皮的裂隙中，从而能够站稳，不至于跌落，可以说尾巴是它的“第三条腿”。
袋鼠的尾巴又粗又长，休息时，尾巴支在地上，成了它的凳子。
保温作用：像松鼠、狐狸等长着毛茸茸粗尾巴的动物，在寒冷的时候，会把身体缩成一团，然后将大尾巴严严实实地围住身体，犹如围了一条大毛围巾，天气再冷也不会受冻。
定向和推进作用：鱼类等水生动物的尾巴，不仅可以作为舵来定向，而且还可以上下或左右摆动作为推进器使用。
