READING COMPREHENSIONRead the two passages and choose the most likely answer to each of the questions. Blacken the letter corresponding to your choice on the answer sheet. (2 points each, 20 points in all)Passage OneHaving been sitting out in his back yard in the snow for about an hour, Bobby was getting cold. Bobby didn’t wear boots; he didn’t like them and anyway he didn’t own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold. Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother’s Christmasgift. He shook his head as he thought, “This is useless, even if I do have an idea, I don’t have any money to spend.” Ever since his father had passed away three years before, the family of five had struggled. His mother worked nights at the hospital, but the small wage that she was earning could only be stretched so far. What the family lacked in money and material things was more than made up for in love and family unity. Three of his sisters had already made beautiful gifts for their mother. Here it was Christmas Eve already, and he had nothing. Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started to walk down to the street where the shops and stores were.It wasn’t easy being six without a father, especially when he needed a man to talk to. Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful and so out of reach. Suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer of the setting sun’s rays reflecting off on something along the curb. He reached down and picked up a shiny dime. Never before had anyone felt so wealthy as Bobby did at that moment. Warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store he saw. His excitement quickly turned cold when the salesperson told him that he couldn’t buy anything with only a dime. He noticed a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother. The shop owner put his hand on Bobby’s shoulder and said to him, “You just wait here and I’ll see what I can do for you.”When the shop owner came out and moved to the counter, Bobby saw in his hand twelve long-stemmed red roses, with green leaves and tiny white flowers all tied together with a big silver bow. Bobby’s heart sank as the owner placed them neatly into a long white box. “That will be ten cents, young man,” the shop owner said. Slowly, Bobby gave the man his dime. Could this be true? No one else would give him a thing for his dime! Sensing the boy’s reluctance, the shop owner added, “I just happened to have some roses on sale for ten cents a dozen. Would you like them?” This time Bobby did not hesitate, and took the long box from the man. Walking out of the door that the owner was holding open for him, Bobby heard the shopkeeper say, “Merry Christmas, son.”As he returned inside, the shopkeeper’s wife walked out. “Who were you talking to back there and where are the roses you were fixing?” Staring out of the window, and blinking the tears from his own eyes, he replied, “When the little boy came into the shop and wanted to buy a flower for his mother with that small dime, I saw myself, many years ago. I too, was a poor boy with nothing to buy my mother a Christmas gift. A bearded man, whom I never knew, stopped me on the street and told me that he wanted to give me ten dollars ...” The shop owner and his wife hugged each other tightly, and as they stepped out into the bitter cold air, they somehow didn’t feel the cold at all.41. Why did the six-year-old boy Bobby feel so upset on Christmas Eve?A. He had no father to take care of him.B. His mother could not buy boots for him.C. The family was suffering from poverty in spite of the mother’s hard work.D. All of the children in the family but him had Christmas gifts for their mother.42. The dime Bobby found on the street could be best described as ______.A. a greattreasureB. a Christmas giftC. freshairD. bright light43. Why did the boy hesitate when he paid for the roses?A. He was reluctant to spend the only dime he had.B. He could not understand the shopkeeper’s words.C. He could not believe the roses were fixed for him.D. He was not sure if roses were the best Christmas gift.44. Which of the following statements is true about the story?A. Seeing the twelve roses, Bobby was excited and eager to get them.B. Christmas sale was given in memory of that unknown bearded man.C. With deep sympathy for the boy, the shopkeeper didn’t take his money.D. The shopkeeper mentioned the rose sale to put the boy completely at ease.45. Which of the following might be the best title for the story?A. Value ofRosesB. Love—Passed onC. Home Is theBest D. No Pains, No GainsPassage TwoCould Google, the world’s largest search engine, be causing our memory banks to be weak? Maybe, say four Columbia University researchers, who believe Google’s instant search mechanics could be training our brains to get rid of information we’re sure of quickly finding again with a few taps on a keyboard.Times certainly have changed. I can still remember having to memorize stuff back in grade school like linking verbs—“is, am, are, was, were, have, has, had, etc.”—as if reciting a ritual chant, or the precise sequence of northeastern states, left to fight, top to bottom. Nowadays, I just look up Google Maps if I can’t remember whether it’s Vermont before New Hampshire, or whether to answer “this is he” or “this is him” when someone asks for me on the phone. But we’ve heard this tune before, right? I’m looking at a book on my shelf, The Shallows, by author Nicholas Carr, whose article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” set off all kinds of cultural and scientific discussions in 2008. The Shallows elaborated on points in that article and brought in actual neurological research to support Carr’s thesis that the Internet may be dramatically rewiring our brains. And with the Columbia research, the evidence that something’s up is growing. In the study, titled “Google Effects on Memory: Cognitive Consequences of Having Information at Our Fingertips,” the Columbia University researchers claim that when we’re sure of access to information in the future, our ability to summon that information from memory drops. Conversely, our ability to recall how to access the information goesup. Thus, the researchers argue, “The Internet has become a primary form of external memory, where information is stored collectively outside ourselves.”According to Betsy Sparrow, the study’s lead, “Since the coming of search engines, we are reorganizing the way we remember things. Our brains rely on the Internet for memory in much the same way they rely on the memory of a friend, family member or co-worker. We remember less through knowing information itself than by knowing where the information can be found.”Is Google really wrecking our memory? The answer is “it depends.” The Columbia University report doesn’t offer evidence of actual memory diminishing. Instead, the suggestion is that, influenced by Internet and search engine use, our memories are switching job hats and becoming more external. Instead of remembering “ends,” we’re remembering “means.” Search engines like Google are simply becoming extensions of our brains, sort of like wireless electronic devices. And it’s not unacceptable to consider ways in which such a memory shift might actually benefit us. “Perhaps those who teach in any context, be they college professors, doctors or business leaders, will become increasingly focused on teaching greater understanding of ideas and ways of thinking, and less focused on memorization,” suggests Sparrow.Would that be such a bad thing? After all, I’ve always thought the popular notion that memorizing precisely where something is on a map as a sign of “intelligence” was pretty dumb. I’d rather have an accurate working knowledge of the details that separate, say, Shia from Sunni, the two main branches of Islam, than how to point at random to Turkey or Brazil on a globe.46. The result of the Columbia University research is that ______.A. search engines may weaken our memoryB. the way we remember things may be changedC. our memory may rely heavily on external informationD. search engines may extend our memory of information47. The phrase “job hats” in Paragraph 6 refers to ______.A. the original memory banksB. the roles of search enginesC. the abilities to deal with informationD. the ways of remembering information48. Which of the following could be an example of the “means” (Para. 6) we rely on?A. Memory of colleagues.B. Knowledge about Shia and Sunni.C. Location of Vermont and New Hampshire.D. Positions of different countries on the globe.49. According to the Columbia study, what may happen when we have easy access to information?A. Our external memory begins to fail.B. Our actual memory begins to diminish.C. We are likely to remember the means of getting that information.D. We are likely to store that information permanently in our memory.50. 00015⾃考英语⼆520170419北京历年真题2013年10⽉讲义上北京真题讲义(2013年10⽉上)第六部分:完形补⽂Language learningIf you decide to take language courses online, be sure there are advantages in studying online. Its costs are usually lower (low) than the classroom learning, and you can study at your own pace, and you can easily (ease) get the materials 24 hours a day from almost any computer in the world. However, you won't get the human interaction(interact) of meeting people face to face, as you would if you were attending a school abroad in person. However, the advantage of going (go) abroad may include day-to-day chances to learn a new culture, to meet new friends with whom you can use and practice the language, and to see different (difference) parts of the world. There are also a number of disadvantages(disadvantage) for some students, including high cost, time away from one's school, family, or work life, and difficulty in getting ( get) used to a new culture and way of life.Whatever you do, consider a distance education program that meets(meet) your educational needs, that is what you can afford, and that provides you with chances beyond the class-room through cultural(culture) activities and educational activities. As long as you try your best, you have the possibility (possible) of success. 第五部分:填词补⽂Crying is healthyWhen I was small and my grandmother died, I couldn't understand why I had no tears. But when my dad tried to cheer me up that night, my laugh turned into crying. Researchers believe that crying and laughing come from the same part of the brain. Just as scientists are discovering that laughing has many health advantages, so does crying. To reduce pressure is important to our emotional health, and study found that 85 percent of women and 73 percent of men report feeling better after crying.Besides, tears attract help from other people. Researchers agree that when we cry, people around us become kinder and friendlier and they are more ready to provide support and comfort. Tears also enable us to understand our emotions better; sometimes we don't even know we're very sad until we cry. We learn about our emotions through crying, and then we can deal with them.Just as crying can be healthy, not crying---holding back tears of anger, pain or suffering -- can be bad for physical health. Studies have shown that too much control of emotions can lead to high blood pressure, heart problems and some other illness. If you have a health problem, doctors will certainly not ask you to cry. But when you feel like crying, don't fight it. It's a natural and healthy emotional response.七、写作请根据要求撰写⼀篇120词左右的英语短⽂。

It was public opinion that the current methods of execution, hanging, electrocution, and facing a firing squad, were too slow and painful upon the person to be executed. The U.S.Supreme Court reversed this decision when a cleaner way to bring about death was found in 1976.This cleaner way is death by lethal injection, which is quick and painless if administered right.(2)Many people have argued for and against capital punishment since it was reinstituted. Some say the death penalty is what the criminal deserves while others object to it because death is irreversible.I feel the death penalty is a good form of justice because only about 250 people a year get the death penalty and they are guilty beyond a doubt and don’t deserve living with the possibility of parole.(3)The sentencing judge or jury are ordered by the Supreme Court to look for specific aggravating and mitigating factors in deciding which convicted murderers should be sentenced to death.S ome of these mitigating factors are the defendant’s motivation, character, personal history, and most of all remorse.Every year approximately 250 new offenders are added to death row.In 1994 there were 2,850 persons awaiting execution.Yet no more than thirty-eight people have been. .专业知识分享. .executed a year since 1976.This is a ridiculously low number compared to 199 persons executed in 1935.(4)The reason for this slow execution rate is the process of appeals. From sentencing to execution there is about a seven-to-eight-year wait. The convicts’ cases are reviewed by the state courts and through the federal courts. With all this opportunity for the case to be turned over or the sentence to be changed it is almost impossible for an innocent person to be executed.Only two people have been proved innocent after their execution in the United States. These wrongful deaths occurred in 1918 and 1949.Since then the justice system has undergonea lot o f fine tuning making this extremely unlikely to day.(5)One argument against the death penalty is that it costs less to imprison someone for life than to execute them. This is a good point that has a 1ot of impact on a lot of people’s views regarding capital punishment since they are the ones footing the bill.through taxes.I personally would not mind paying the little bit extra just so I know for sure that there’s one 1ess murderer on our planet. If the death penalty was done away with, prisoners who should have been executed will be mixed in with other inmates. It would be possible and not too unlikely for them to kill another inmate or possibly a prison guard. If someone is lined up for execution then they more than likely deserve it.They have caused a great deal of grief to the family and friends of the victim or victims and it seems like the only way justice could be served is for the criminal to die.(6)For the person to simply go to jail seems unfair. There they will eat three mealsa day, get to watch cable TV and befriend other inmates. They live a pretty decent 1ife in prison and they don’t deserve it.Out of the fifty states in the United States 37 have and use capital punishment.Out of the same fifty states only 18 have 1ife imprisonment without parole. In the other 32 states a person who should’ve been executed canb e released after as 1ittle as 20 years in prison.(7)There are certain standards that are followed in giving out capital punishment. The defendant can not be insane, and the real or criminal intent must be present. Also, minors very rarely receive the death penalty because they are. .专业知识分享. .not fully mature and might not know the consequences of their actions. Finally the mentally retarded are very seldom executed. The reason for not executing the retarded is that they often have difficulty defending themselves in court, have problems remembering details, locating witnesses, and testifying credibly on their own behalf.(8)If capital punishment were carried out more it would prove to be the crime deterrent it was partly intended to be.Most criminals would think twice before committing murder if they knew their own 1ives are at stake. As it turns out,as very few people are executed,so the death penalty is not a satisfactory deterrent.During highly publicized death penalty cases the homicide rate is found to go down but it goes back up when the case is over.(9)Thomas Edison,a famous scientist and American hero, helped develop and extensively promoted the electric chair. The electric chair was a popular method of execution from the 1930s to the 1970s.The death penalty is a punishment that will remain active for a long time in the future, even with all the criticism. It is an ancient way of dealing with extremely serious offences that plague our country today.Hopefully the appeals process will be shortened, but remain effective,so more criminals can be executed, making prospective criminals think twice.II.In this section, there are ten incomplete statements or questions, followed by four choices marked A,B,C and D.Choose the best answer and blacken the corresponding letter on your Answer Sheet.(20 points,2 points for each) 16.The death sentence was instituted some ______ years ago.A.200 B.300C.400 D.5 0017.According to the first paragraph, people generally thought that ______.A.lethal injection was painful but quickB.death penalty was cruel and therefore should be abolishedC.facing a 精选一My Writing TeacherEnglish writing was always easy for me, but that changed on the first day walked into Mrs.Johnson's class. Before that,I'd heard rumors from former students. They said she was strict and her class was hard to pass. So I was very nervous. The first time we met, Mrs. Johnson told us her class would be difficult, but she would give us new"tools"and guide us through She explained that her grading system was different, and that we would not see high scores soon."Everything you do in class matters," she said.“As writing is an art, it takes along time to perfect."Mrs. Johnson scared me.I was afraid of what she would say if I asked a question. So in class I kept silent most of the time and couldn't follow her. When I got my first essay back,my grade was terrible.I was annoyed with Mrs.Johnson.I disliked going to her class. Then I realized I needed to find out what I could do to improve my grade and how to use the “tools”in my writing. As I still didn't dare to talk to Mrs.Johnson in person,I e-mailed her.In this way,she and worked together to improve my writing.By and by,I could talk to her both online and in person. She walked me through every step to understand how to write an essay. Together we saw improvement in my work. From this I discovered that asking for help could actually work.Behind everything Mrs.Johnson was saying, she actually cared about me and where I would be in the future. But scientists say that the farms of the future could be built in tall buildings in some large cities. It may be difficult to believe, but in fact, the technology for growing crops indoors already exists. Farming in the city is already happening. Some vegetables are already grown in greenhouses. Even the scientists at the South Pole research station can enjoy fresh vegetables they grow in their own greenhouse. Experts say indoor farming solves many problems. First, traditional farming takes up a lot of land. Growing crops in tall buildings—called vertical farming(垂直农业)—can solve the problem. Also, fruits and vegetables grown indoors would not face serious threats from insects and bad weather. Though vertical farms don’t exist yet, experts have created a plan for recycling in such farms. The water from indoor fish ponds would be used to water crops. Gases from crop waste would be used to heat the building. Waste from chicken or pigs would be reused as a source of energy. But experts believe vertical farming is not going to be easy. They say it can be difficult to control climate conditions indoors. Besides, plants differ in their weather and lighting needs. For example, some plants like warm, sunny weather, but other plants prefer cooler temperatures. That’s not to say these difficulties won’t be overcome—but it will take time. Most experts suggest it may take about 5 to 10 years before the first vertical farms could be created.(分数:10.00)(1).The word “farm” may make you think of the countryside.
