专名在人们的日常生活、交际和文学作品中起着重要的作用，因此研究专名翻译具有重要的理论意义和实践指导作用。

一、人名的音译英语人名汉译情况较复杂，要视具体情况而定。

这是因为汉语的同音词很多，选择不同的汉字译同一英文名字，就会把读者弄糊涂，弄不清究竟说的是一个人还是多个人。

例如Phillip 这个名字早期至少有九种译名：菲利普，菲利蒲，菲力普，菲力蒲，腓力普，腓利普，腓力；而William的译法至少也有5种：威廉，巍联，卫连，维涟，雯莲。

中文不是拼音文字，个个字都有意思。

译一个外国人的姓名，可以恭敬他上天，也可以贬得他一文不值。

用些什么字来译，大成问题”。

如以饰演占士邦闻名的英国影星，港译“罗渣摩亚”，台译“罗杰摩尔”.有鉴于此，翻译人名时就应该尽可能地统一译文，以免造成不必要的混乱。

早期翻译界把Shakespeare（莎士比亚）译成“侠客使匕”，这样的译名会让人联想到莎翁不是位文豪而是一名武士。

3. 文学作品中的人名,更需谨慎地选择名字。

《名利场》：Sharp（夏泼）Amelia（艾米丽娅）《Gone With the Wind》：Scarlett译成“郝思佳”过于汉化，但若仅按读音译为“斯卡利特”则显生硬，不如译为“斯佳丽”更为妥帖．Melanie，音译“梅拉尼”不如“玫兰妮”更合适。
