四年级上册英语书第八单元课文Unit 8 Our WorldLesson 1: The EarthThe Earth is a very special place. It is the third planet from the Sun in our solar system. The Earth is a big, round ball. It is not completely round, though. It is a bit squashed at the top and the bottom. We call this shape an oblate spheroid.The Earth is made up of land and water. About 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water, and the rest is land. The land is divided into seven large pieces called continents. The continents are: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.The Earth also has an atmosphere. The atmosphere is the layer of air that surrounds the Earth. It is made up of different gases, such as oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide.The atmosphere protects us from the Sun’s heat and harmful rays and also helps keep the Earth warm.The Earth has four main layers. The innermost layer is called the core. It is made up of hot, solid iron and nickel. Above the core is the mantle. The mantle is made up of hot, semi-solid rock. Above the mantle is the crust. The crust is the Earth’s surface and is made up of rocks and soil. It is the thinnest layer of the Earth.The Earth is always moving. It spins on its axis, whichis an imaginary line that runs from the North Pole to the South Pole. It takes the Earth about 24 hours to complete one spin.
