AnalysisThe virtue of marriage is very important for Shakespeare, who often ends his comedies with multiple marriages to signify a happy solution to many of the problems the characters have faced. Marriage is thus a way of achieving inclusion for Shakespeare, and it is notable that the characters which remain unmarried are often isolated and removed from the society, specifically Antonio and Shylock within this play. Marriage also represents a way to overcome difficulties; for Bassanio it will remove his debt, for Portia it will free her from her father's will and for Jessica is will allow her to escape her father.Given this view of marriage, the choice of the caskets presents a horrifying risk for many of the participants, namely the threat that if they choose wrong casket they must swear to never propose marriage to a woman afterwards. In a sense, the failure to marry is as good as being castrated. In fact, Shakespeare creates this very analogy throughout The Merchant of Venice and ties it to the ability to make money breed. Thus in the first act Shylock mentions that he makes his money breed as fast as ewes and lambs. Antonio will further this metaphor in the final act, when he remarks that he is like a wether, or a castrated lamb, and thus unable to breed. For the suitors to Portia, then, swearing to never wed puts them on the same level as Antonio. By agreeing to not marry, they themselves become castrated.Lancelot the clown is one of the more interesting characters. His treatment of his father is awful, considering that his father is mostly blind and has brought a present to his son. The entire scene mimics the biblical story of Jacob and Esau, though. The bible tells how Jacob tricked his father into giving him the inheritance by wearing wool so his father would think he was Esau. Lancelot does the same thing, by bending down and making his father "know" him by feeling his head.Shylock's character starts to emerge very strongly within this act. We see him now not only as a moneylender demanding interest, but also as a villain. He shows a marked aversion to fun, demanding that Jessica lock the door and close the windows when he finds out there will be a masque that night. However, contrary to his statement in the first act, Shylock leaves his house to enjoy a dinner with Bassanio. Much of this act therefore develops the negative aspects of Shylock character. However, the Christian faults are also exposed within this act. The faithlessness of Jessica has been an issue of discussion for many centuries, with the debate raging over whether she is justified in leaving her father. The crucial difficulty is that she does not merely run away, but she insists on stealing large amounts of her father's jewels and gold. Thus when Graziano remarks, "Now, by my hood, a gentile, and no Jew" (2.6.51), we can only see it as ironic. Ironic because she is stealing her father's money, so he is essentially implying Christians are thieves.Jessica's actions also leave unanswered the question of why she is locked up in her father's home. The answer to this comes from an understanding of the relationship between money and breeding. Whereas in the beginning Antonio is impotent in the sense that his money does not breed, Shylockis not. Shylock further has the advantage of having a daughter. Since the Jewish lineage is passed down via the maternal line, Jessica represents a way for Shylock's family line to continue. Thus, hoarding Jessica and his gold is Shylock's way of guaranteeing his successful breeding. In fact, Solanio makes this connection between daughter and money abundantly clear when he tells us that Shylock ran through the street of Venice crying:"My daughter! O, my ducats! O, my daughter!Fled with a Christian! O, my Christian ducats!Justice! The law! My ducats and my daughter!A sealed bag, two sealed bags of ducats,"Thus for Shylock the simultaneous loss of his daughter and his money is in a sense the loss of his fertility. Not only does her conversion to Christianity destroy Shylock's family line, it also makes him impotent in a metaphorical sense. Jessica takes two stones with her, which represent the "testicles" of Shylock, since stone was often used to mean testicle. Thus after her theft, Shylock joins Antonio in impotence, having lost his ability to breed. Indeed, the escape of Jessica marks the turning point of Shylock's fortunes, which will lead to his eventual destruction. It is important that Jessica escapes not dressed as herself, but as a man. In fact, there is a never a scene on the Venetian streets in which a woman is present. The only way a woman can walk through the street of Venice is to dress as a man, a fact that will reinforced when Portia pretends to be Balthasar and dresses as a man before entering Venice. This is one of the primary differences between the worlds of Venice and Belmont. The three caskets each bear inscriptions that tell us about the personalities of the characters who pick them. Gold reads: "Who chooseth me shall gain what many men desire" (2.7.5). The silver casket has, "Who chooseth me shall get as much as he deserves" (2.7.7). Finally, the dull lead casket bears the inscription, "Who chooseth me must give and hazard all he hath" (2.7.9). The Prince of Morocco first chooses gold and gets a death skull. The Prince of Aragon receives the picture of an idiot. This is symbolic, for he is an old man and hence is an idiot for thinking himself deserving of a young woman. One of the most debated lines is when Portia sends the Prince of Morocco away by saying, "A gentle riddance. Draw the curtains, go. / Let all of his complexion choose me so" (2.7.78-79). This provincial comment stands in contrast with her upbringing and nobility. However, what soon becomes clear is that Portia is a very narrow character in her sense of friends. She chooses Bassanio over the more cosmopolitan suitors because he represents her Christian and Venetian world. Bassanio wins her because of the same thing, namely he alone of the suitors possesses the local characteristics necessary to interpret which casket to choose.Unlike Portia and Bassanio, Jessica never has to be chosen by a casket. Instead, she tosses her casket out of the window for Lorenzo to catch. Thus her relationship, unlike that of Portia and Bassanio, has no test to make sure it is a good relationship. This lack of a test will create problems later, foreshadowed by Shakespeare when Lorenzo and Jessica compare themselves to many famous failed romances. The Merchant of Venice is largely a play about interpretation. The suitors to Portia are condemned to sterility because they misread the caskets. Shylock's interpretation of the contract in 1.3 takes the "pound of flesh" seriously and literally, whereas Antonio thinks Shylock is being "kind." Later in the final scene, the outcome of the play - whether it becomes a comedic ending or a tragic one, will rest on Portia's interpretation of the law. Thus the play creates its drama and its plot through the constant interpretation of events and words. This crucial aspect is frequently used by Shakespeare in his remaining comedies, and it forms a crucial part of the plot in Much Ado About Nothing.。

毕业论文(或毕业设计)文献综述文献综述题目(中文小二号黑体居中或英文Times New Roman小二号加粗居中或日文明朝体小二号加粗)学生姓名指导教师二级学院专业名称班级学号年月日(标题Times New Roman三号加粗)The Literature ReviewofThe Mystery of Antonio’s Sadness in The Merchant of Venice (正文用Times New Roman小四,1.5倍行距,各段首行空4个字符,书名用斜体加粗)Written sometime between 1596 and 1598, The Merchant of Venice is classified as both an early Shakespearean comedy (more specifically, as a "Christian comedy") and as one of the Bard's problem plays; it is a work in which good triumphs over evil, but serious themes are examined and some issues remain unresolved. In The Merchant of Venice , Shakespeare wove together two ancient folk tales, one involving a vengeful, greedy creditor trying to exact a pound of flesh, the other involving a marriage suitor's choice among three chests and thereby winning his (or her) mate. Shakespeare's treatment of the first standard plot scheme centers around the villain of Merchant, the Jewish moneylender Shylock, who seeks a literal pound of flesh from his Christian opposite, the generous, faithful Antonio. Shakespeare's version of the chest-choosing device revolves around the play's Christian heroine Portia, who steers her lover Bassanio toward the correct humble casket and then successfully defends his bosom friend Antonio from Shylock's horrid legal suit. Antonio, as the title character, is sad from the beginning to the end of the play but never names the cause of his melancholy even when his friends ask him. Antonio plays the role as an outcast in the play. Shakespeare uses Antonio’s sadness simply as the device to set the tragic tone in the comedy or make Antonio be one of his melancholic characters in his works? Or Antonio is the representative of the complicated human nature? Antonio's unexplained melancholy is a significant element in understanding the play.1. Studies on The Merchant of V enice(Times New Roman + 四号+首缩进4字符,下同)Karl Marx once cited that Shakespeare is the greatest playwright in the world.Shakespeare’s comedy The Merchant of Venice is one of the most influential comedies in his works. Shylock has mostly been the center of the research on the play. The Merchant of Venice was first printed in 1600 in quarto, of which nineteen copies survive. This was followed by a 1619 printing, and later an inclusion in the First Folio in 1623. The play was written shortly after Christopher Marlowe’s immensely popular Jew of Malta (1589), a play wherein a Jew named Barabas plays a greatly exaggerated villain. The portrayal of Shakespeare's Jew was and remained comic until the late 1700s at which time he was first played as a true villain. In 1814 Sh ylock’s role was depicted as a character to be pitied, and in 1879 he was first portrayed as a tragic character. Subsequent interpretations have varied greatly over the years, but since World War II he has most often been conceived of as tragic. The Merchant of Venice has been described as a great commentary on the nature of racial and religious interactions.2. Deficiencies of Previous Studies on the Mystery of Antonio’s Sadness in The Merchant of V eniceThe title character, Antonio, begins the play intriguingly: "In sooth, I know not why I am so sad; / It wearies me" (I.i.1-2). Much ink has been spilled with conjectures about Antonio's melancholy: that he's simply melancholic of temperament, that his devotion to Bassanio is homoerotic and the news that this friend seeks to marry has depressed him (Antonio is a name Shakespeare uses also in Twelfth Night for a character with an intense devotion to another male), or that he has an "ominous foreboding" about the events that will transpire in the course of this play. Although those pioneers aroused people to think much of The Merchant of Venice and left us invaluable and systematic reference, and made many achievements in description and explanation of the cause of Antonio’s sadness, there remain many deficienc ies.First, The Merchant of Venice, which is considered to be one of Shakespeare’s four great comedies, actually functions as Shakespeare's farewell to comedy. Antonio is one of Shakespeare’s melancholic characters. Shakespeare in The Merchant of Venice is undermining all that passes for comic entertainment. Shakespeare uses Antonio’ssadness as a device to set the tragic tone in the comic atmosphere.Second, a lot of issues that are argued about regarding The Merchant of Venice can be considerably clarified if we know something about the audience it was written for. In the modern, post-Holocaust readings of the play, the problem of anti-Semitism in the play has been discussed a lot. Given that Antonio decides not to seize Shylock’s goods as punishment, we might consider Antonio to be merciful. But we may also question whether it is merciful to return to Shylock half of his goods, only to take away his religion and his profession. Antonio’s compassion seems to stem as much from self-interest as from concern for his fellow man. Shakespeare thus shows a balance of prejudice on both sides. The question whether Antonio is a homosexual in love with Bassanio can also interpreted differently.5. ConclusionDespite the researches already done and achievements already made on the subject, many frontiers are still waiting to be explored. On the basis of the previous researches by forerunners and adopting new approaches we are to make a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of this subject. We don't mean to suggest that other ways of looking at the play are "wrong." In fact, one of the things that is so great about Shakespeare is that there are so many different ways of interpreting his plays that all work.

1The Merchant of Venice is a play written by the famous playwright William Shakespeare. It's about a merchant named Antonio who takes a loan from a Jewish moneylender named Shylock, and Shylock demands a pound of Antonio's flesh as collateral if the loan isn't repaid on time. The play also has a romantic subplot involving Portia, a wealthy heiress, and Bassanio, a Venetian gentleman. After watching the play, I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, I think it's a really interesting and exciting story with lots of twists and turns. The characters are well developed, and the dialogue is witty and engaging. I especially liked the character of Portia, who is smart, funny, and brave. She disguises herself as a male lawyer to save Antonio from Shylock's cruel demand, showing her strength and intelligence. On the other hand, I found some parts of the play to be a bit problematic. The character of Shylock, the Jewish moneylender, is portrayed in a negative light and some of the language used todescribe him is offensive and stereotypical. The play also raises questions about justice, mercy, and prejudice that are still relevant today.Overall, I think The Merchant of Venice is athought-provoking play that raises important questions about human nature and the complexities of morality. It may not be perfect, but it's definitely worth watching and thinking about.篇2Hey guys! Today I want to share with you my thoughts on the movie "The Merchant of Venice". This movie is super cool because it's about this guy named Antonio who borrows money from a big shot guy named Shylock. But then Antonio can't pay him back, so Shylock wants to cut off a pound of Antonio's flesh! That's so crazy, right?I think the movie teaches us a lot about the importance of keeping your word and being careful about borrowing money. It's not cool to borrow money if you can't pay it back, because then you might end up in a really tough spot like Antonio. And Shylock, he's kind of like a bad guy in the movie because he wants to hurt Antonio so badly. But at the same time, I feel sorry for him because he's been treated badly by other people too.I also learned a lot about friendship from the movie. Antonio's friend, Bassanio, is so loyal and caring. He's willing to do anything to help Antonio, even if it means risking his own life. That's what true friendship is all about, right?Overall, I really enjoyed watching "The Merchant of Venice". It made me think about friendship, loyalty, and the consequences of our actions. I hope you guys get a chance to watch it too! Thanks for listening to my thoughts, see you next time!篇3The Merchant of Venice is a play written by William Shakespeare. It's a super cool play and I totally loved watching it! The story is all about this guy named Antonio who borrows some money from a mean guy named Shylock. Shylock is all like "I want a pound of your flesh if you don't pay me back on time!" That's some scary stuff, right? But then there is this super smart and funny girl named Portia who comes up with a plan to save Antonio. She dresses up as a lawyer and tricks Shylock into not taking any of Antonio's flesh. I was like "Wow, Portia is so awesome!"The play also talks about love and friendship. Antonio is best friends with this guy named Bassanio and he would do anything for him. That's true friendship, right? And then there's this love story between Bassanio and Portia. They are so in love and it's so sweet! But the play also talks about how people can be really mean and unfair sometimes. Shylock treats Antonio so badly just because he is Jewish. That's not cool at all! We should always be nice and kind to everyone, no matter where they come from.Overall, The Merchant of Venice is a really cool play with lots of twists and turns. It teaches us about friendship, love, and standing up against injustice. It's definitely one of my favorite plays by Shakespeare!篇4After watching the movie "The Merchant of Venice", I felt so excited and want to share my thoughts with you guys. The movie is about a merchant named Antonio who borrows money from a Jewish moneylender named Shylock. Antonio couldn't pay the money back on time, so Shylock demanded a pound of his flesh as repayment. But in the end, Portia, a smart and clever lady, helped Antonio escape from this dangerous situation.I learned a lot from this movie. One important lesson is about the consequences of borrowing money. We should always be careful when borrowing money from others and make sure to repay it on time. It's better to save money and spend wisely than to borrow and risk getting into trouble.Another lesson from the movie is about forgiveness and compassion. Shylock was filled with anger and hatred towards Antonio because of the way he was treated by others. But instead of seeking revenge, Portia showed kindness and mercy towards him. This teaches us that forgiveness is important and that we should treat others with respect and compassion.Overall, "The Merchant of Venice" is a great movie with valuable lessons. It's not only entertaining but also educational. I would recommend it to everyone to watch and learn from it.篇5Title: My Thoughts on "The Merchant of Venice"Hi everyone! But the funny thing is, he's not happy because he's in love with this girl named Portia, but he can't marry her because he's a Christian and she's not. Then there's this bad guy named Shylock who is a Jewish moneylender. He's really mean and he hates Antonio because Antonio always borrows money from him and never pays it back on time. So Shylock is like, "I want my money back or else I'm going to cut off a pound of your flesh!" That's like super scary, right?!But then Portia comes up with this smart plan to save Antonio. It's like a lesson about forgiveness and being kind to others.I really loved watching "The Merchant of Venice" and I think it's a really cool play with lots of twists and turns. I can't wait to watch more plays by William Shakespeare!篇9The Merchant of Venice is a play by William Shakespeare and I just watched it with my class. It was super cool! She tricks Shylock into not taking Antonio's flesh and saving the day.I learned a lot from this play. Like how it's important to be kind to others and not be greedy like Shylock. It made the story more interesting and fun to watch.Overall, The Merchant of Venice was a great play and I really enjoyed it. It was a really fun experience and I can't wait to watch more plays in the future!篇10As a primary school student, I recently watched "The Merchant of Venice" and I have some thoughts to share. The story is about a man named Antonio who borrows money from a Jewish moneylender named Shylock to help his friend Bassanio woo a wealthy lady named Portia. However, when Antonio cannot repay the loan on time, Shylock demands a pound of his flesh as payment. One thing that stood out to me in the play was the theme of mercy and justice. Portia delivers a famous speech about the quality of mercy, saying that "The quality of mercy is not strained, It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven, Upon the place beneath." This speech made me think about how important it isto show kindness and compassion to others, even when it may be difficult.Another aspect of the play that I found interesting was the character of Shylock. At first, he seems like a villain because he demands a pound of Antonio's flesh as payment. But as the story unfolds, we see that he has his reasons for seeking revenge. This made me think about how important it is to try to understand other people's perspectives before judging them.Overall, "The Merchant of Venice" taught me that things are not always as they seem and that it is important to show mercy and understanding to others. It was a thought-provoking play that made me reflect on the complexities of human nature. I would recommend it to others who enjoy exploring deep themes and complex characters.。

performances Bassanio, Lynn Collins performances Portia. There is also a network game Mabinogi Mabinogi adapted the screenplay as the game's main task.Part D.summary Shylock in the merchant of Venice has a deep impression to me, although he is a miser, and petty revenge-heart heavily who tries his best to revenge all people who have abused him.He even wants to kill the opponents. But I think it's unfair.Because Shakespeare shaped Shylock to be the evil role and incisively and vividly described his sinister and vicious.Antonio is completely beautification: he treasures friendship, for friends borrow money from loan Shylock and die without regret; He manganese, in the face of Shylock shameless plot.Faced with the threat of death, he has in a crisis, the death of manhood like the Roman heroes. In a short, he has a decent, heavy affection, urbane and humanist quality of rettingof songs.Even in the 16th century Europe's most powerful and free city Venice, the intolerance of the Jews at the time also can't change the fact.According to law, the Jewish are forced to live in isolation of old factory building wall or slum, the door will be locked after sunsetis guarded by Christians.Any Jews left slum area during the day forced to put on a show that they are “Jew” as to the identity of the red hat.Jews were forbidden to own property, so they can only be usury, and will charge interest on the money borrowed and that is in violation of the law of Christianity. The merchant of Venice they turned a blind eye, but for hostile to the Jewish religious zealots are completely different. They will be beating abuse or even deprived of the rights of Jewish life. And this kind of unfairness is to make Shylock the main reason for abnormal personality. So Shylock is a tragic character. Not he, but the society should be hated, because it’s the sad society that created a tragedy of Shylock.Part E.my feelingsThis book shows me many things. After reading this book, I know that the importance of friendship and love.Whenever we feel frustrated, our relatives and friends can help us out.Although money is important, in this world, there are many more important things t han money;we shouldn’t be fooled by the phenomenon of surface. In our reality life you can't discriminate against anyone because of his own superiority. At the same time, we should act like Portia because she wasn’t be threatened by the sudden difficulty and face the difficulties bravely. And I think most of us are kindly, but the society can change our characters. In some degree, whether the government is cruel or not can influence the citizens’ characters and thoughts.I do think that Antonio is only used to foil Shylock, a small role.Although Shakespeare satire theJewish businessman Shylock, he also showed the European government discrimination and exclusion of the Jews.In a word, it stresses the point.第二篇:双城记英文简介 bookreport专用A Tale of Two Cities It was the year 1757, the doctor Manette Rich and moving story of family ties, witty dialogue, the plot turn, exaggerated the circumstances of Comedy, romance and legend is full of color. Is intertwined with friendship, love, love the world and lead us to understanding what is important in life. The play tells a story that happens in Italy.A moneyless young Venetian, Bassanio, is making preparations to propose to Portia, a rich beauty of Belmont. He needs money and appeals to his friend Antonio, a merchant of Venice, for help. But Antonio‟s money is invested in ships at sea.To help Bassanio in his courtship, he borrows money from Shylock the Jewish usurer.Shylock, who has been insulted by Antonio and other Christians, however, agrees to lend the money on the condition that if the loan is not paid in time, he may cut a pound of flesh from Antonio‟s body. With this money, Bassanio goes to Belmont and succeed in the marriage with Portia. But news comes that Antonio‟s ship sank and can‟t return on time so he cannot pay the loan.Shylock demands his pound of flesh. The case is brought before the court.Antonio is in danger. At the critical moment, a young doctor of law arrives at the court. He appeals to Shylock for mercy with a moving speech, but in vain. Then the doctor admits the validity of Shylock‟s claim, but warns him, under pain of death, that he must fulfill the every letter of his bond, taking no more and noless than one pound of flesh, and spilling no drop of blood.Seeing himself thus cornered, the Jew has no choice but to obey the verdict of the court. To everyone‟s surprise, the young doctor of law who saves the life of Antonio is Portia in disguise. Finally they live together happily. The story has a happy ending in theory. But I don‟t think the end is really happy and is a kind of “grave comedy”.In this single-minded pursuit of a pound of flesh, his frequent mentions of the cruelty he has endured at Christian hands make it hard for us to label him a natural born monster. In one of Shakespeare‟s most famous monologues, for example, Shylock argues that Jews are humans and calls his quest for vengeance the product of lessons taught to him by the cruelty of Venetian citizens. On the other hand, Shylock‟s coldly calculated attempt to revenge the wrongs done to him by murdering his persecutor, Antonio, prevents us from viewing him in a primarily positive light.Shakespeare gives us unmistakably human moments, but he often steers us against Shylock as well, painting him as a miserly, cruel, and prosaic figure. But I think Shylock suffers much discrimination for he is a Jew.It…s unfair. All men were born equally. We can learn much from the play.Money is important, but there are many far more important things in this world.Do not be fooled by the surface. In our real live we should threat everyone equally and do not have color vision to look at other people. And when we meet with unexpected difficulties, we should keep calm and solve it skillfully just as Portia does......第四篇:威尼斯商人英文读后感威尼斯商人英文读后感文家街道逢源小学五年级一班张彤辅导教师庞玉玲«The Merchant of Venice»response papers A few days ago, I read a Book of Shakespeare's comedy “the merchant of Venice”.This book is mainly about Antonio's friend Bassani O Sherlock to borrow money, because Bassani O will ask Portia to marry him.Sherlock Antonio's call for a pound of his flesh instead of merchant.Antonio promised, made a contract with him.Bassanio be jubilant to Belmont takes off the engagement, Gorai Sian Nor also went to, he likes the Portia of maid, Lisa, two couples got married.Antonio sent a letter, said Antonio is going to be from Sherlock who cut off a pound of meat.Hearing this news, Bassanio, and Gorai Sian Nor hurriedly ran back to Venice, Bocia and Johnny Lisa dressed up as a lawyer and secretary, secretly follow to save Antonio. In court, Bocia wisely promised Sherlock can stripping Antonio of any one pound of flesh, but, if shed a drop of blood of words, with his life and property to the penance.Bocia played a joke on her husband. She asked with a ring as a defense for Antonio return, then returned home. When her husband came back, they blame they ignore the significance of wedding rings, and insist the certain is they took him to another woman.A series of embarrassing explanation, finally revealed the truth.Everyone has a happy ending, except that Sherlock wanted to hoist with his ownI think money is not essential things, in my mind from Bassanio.Antonio.Portia them I feel between them friends friendship is really precious. In the book, each plot is so touching. 第五篇:威尼斯商人英文剧本1、Gelayiano2、巴萨尼奥Basaniao:3、安东尼奥Antonion:4、夏洛克Shylock5、鲍西娅Baoxiya6、公爵Duke 7SecretaryD: Have mercy on Antonio, Shylock.Do not be so bitter.S: I've promised to take my pound of flesh. If you do not let me have it, that will be a sign of weakness and no one will trust your laws any more. The greatness of Venice will soon be lost.Antonio is my enemy, and I hate him.B: Do all men kill the things they do not love?公爵:宽恕安东尼奥吧,夏洛克,别这样怀恨在心。

The Merchant of Venice Theme Analysis 《威尼斯商人》主题分析

Theme Analysis:The Merchant of VeniceTheme: LoveThesis Statement: Antonio and Shylock both ―love something‖ deeplyand they are willing to sacrifice for them.In the play of The Merchant of Venice, Antonio is considered to be the ―just side‖ while Shylock is the symbol of greed and spite. However, they both have something that they love deeply and they would sacrifice for it if necessary. Antonio’s ―love‖ is friendship, but Shylock’s ―love‖ is money. At the beginning of the play, the thesis ―Antonio and Shylock both love something‖ is introduced. In Act 1 Scene 1, Bassanio is asking for money from Antonio because he wantsto win the love of a beautiful wealthy girl named Portia. At that time, Antonio doesn’t have enough money because all his money is tied up in the cargo that is still at sea, but he said,―But go ahead and charge things to me on credit, as much credit as I can get in Venice. I’ll use all my lines of credit to help you get to Belmont, to Portia.‖ (Ⅰ, i) Although he doesn’t have cash for Bassanio, he still tried his best to get money for his friend. Even when Shylock proposes to cut Antonio’s flesh if Antonio doesn’t return the money, Antonio agrees immediately just for helping his friend, this is considered to be a sacrifice because Antonio is risking his life. Also,Antonio values the friendship between he and Bassanio very much, because when a person can’t get money directly, he/she will refuse to lend money to others, even his/her closest friend, let aloneborrowmoney from others to lend money to his/her friend. But Antonio does it. So it shows that Antonio’s “love” is friendship, and he can sacrifice forit. This is the first appearance of the thesis “Antonio and Shylock both love something deeply”.As the story continues, the other part of the thesis is revealed, that is the ―love‖ of Shylock.Shylock is a mean and greedy man, in Act 3 Scene 1, when Tubal tells Shylock that he can't find Shylock’s daughter who runs away with her love Lorenzo, Shylock’s firstimportant than his daughter, and he even wants to sacrifice her daughter’s life fro money and jewels. So it is clear that Shylock’s “love” is money, and the theme “Antonio and Shylock both love something deeply and they are willing to sacrifice for them” is shown here. The thing that revealed in this scene is also a step stone to Shylock’s action in the court. In Act 4 Scene 1, Antonio accepts the judge made by Portia, ―Let me have judgment and the Jew his will.‖ (Ⅳ, i)When Bassanio is unsolvable as his friend Antonio is judged to be cut,Antonio never gets benefits from his help to Bassanio, but he values his friendship and is willing to sacrifice his life for his closest friend. At this time, the theme “Antonio and Shylock bot h “love something” deeply and they are willing to sacrifice for them”is developed by the development of the story, th e sacrifice of their ―love‖ becomes more and more profound and serious. Finally, Shylock shows his ardently love to money. He would like others kill him in order to keep his money. When the final result of the case comes up, Shylock is judged to takevindictiveness a few minutes ago, but when his money comes to the equation, Shylock immediately says that he would rather die without his property. He is willing to sacrifice his life for money. T herefore the theme ―Antonio and Shylock both love something deeply and rather sacrifice their life for it‖ is revealed in this scene. In conclusion, through the ―love s‖ of the two characters are completely two different things, they love them in same way – willing to sacrifice their life.。

威尼斯商人英文读后感

威尼斯商人英文读后感The Merchant of Venice is a play written by William Shakespeare, and it has been a classic in the world of literature for centuries. It tells the story of a merchant named Antonio, who borrows money from a Jewish moneylender named Shylock to help his friend Bassanio court the wealthy heiress Portia. However, when Antonio is unable to repay the loan, Shylock demands a pound of his flesh as payment. The play explores themes of love, friendship, greed, and justice, and it has been the subject of much analysis and interpretation over the years. One of the most striking aspects of The Merchant of Venice is the character of Shylock. He is often seen as a villain due to his insistence on the pound of flesh as payment for the loan, but many scholars have also argued that he is a complex and sympathetic character. Shylock has been mistreated and discriminated against because of his religion, and his desire for revenge can be seen as aresult of the prejudice he has faced. This raises importantquestions about justice and mercy, and whether Shylock's actions are a response to the injustices he has experienced.Another key theme in the play is the nature of love and friendship. Antonio is willing to go to great lengths to help his friend Bassanio win the hand of Portia, even if it means putting his own life at risk. This selfless love and loyalty are contrasted with the greed and selfishness of characters like Shylock and the suitors who court Portiafor her wealth. The play raises questions about the true nature of love and whether it can overcome the obstacles of prejudice and materialism. The setting of the play in Venice also adds to its richness and complexity. Venice was a major center of trade and commerce during Shakespeare's time, and it was knownfor its wealth and diversity. The city's multicultural atmosphere is reflected in the characters of the play, andit serves as a backdrop for the clash of cultures andvalues that drives the plot. The contrast between the opulence of Venice and the darkness of Shylock's world creates a vivid and compelling setting for the story.Overall, The Merchant of Venice is a thought-provoking and emotionally powerful play that continues to resonate with audiences today. Its exploration of themes such as love, friendship, justice, and prejudice make it a timeless work of literature, and its complex characters and rich setting make it a rewarding and engaging read. Whether itis studied in a classroom or enjoyed as a piece of entertainment, The Merchant of Venice offers valuable insights into the human experience and the complexities of the human heart.。

《威尼斯商人》书评 英文

The review of The Merchant of VeniceAnytime we want to comment a book, we should have knowledge about the circumstances of the specific era when it was written. The Merchant of Venice was produced by Shakespeare in the 16th century in England, during which the capitalistic economy beginning to develop rapidly and humanism arising. It mainly tells a story of Venice rich merchant Antonio in order to fulfill his friend Bassanio’s wish---to take Portia for a bride, borrows money from Shylock at a usurious rate. Because Antonio lent money to people without interest, and helped Shylock's daughter elope, Shylock took the opportunity to get revenge, pretending not to want interest, but if the overdue payment, from Antonio to cut a pound of flesh.Shakespeare conveys humanism in this work, we can see it from the character Portia, a woman who is brave and full of wisdom in the feudal period when women has little rights and much restriction on words and behaviors. She has her own thoughts and strong urge to take control of her own life and happiness. As a beautiful woman who is also the heiress of great wealth and be chased after by many wealthy and noble princes. She isn’t content with the present state, though. Her little body is weary of the great world. One of the reasons is that she doesn’t have the right to choose a man she loves to share life with. The will of a living daughter is controlled by the dead father’s testament--- to choose her husband by three boxes he left. I can see her strong urge for freedom, to have no constraint. Luckily for her, the final husband is who she loves. Humanism can be found in many places of this work. Antonio, as the best friend of Bassanio, is willing to be bound for three thousand ducats and put his own safety aside to borrow money just in order to help Bassanio win Portia’s love. For Bassanio, Antonio takes up the most important position in his heart, even his wife can’t be compared with. This is a precious friendship, both of them take the other one’s feeling and interest over their own’s. We can see empathy, devotion and kindness from it, which are the shinning ones of human nature. How rarity and beautiful they are!Capitalistic economy’s emerging is another significant thing this work portrays. During the period when industrial revolution has already begun, some capital like money, raw materials, buildings and so on are in the possession of big capitalists. They trade and accumulate wealth. The tragic destiny of Shylock partly attributes to these capitalists. The Merchant of Venice gives happy endings to almost every character except Shylock, a Jew. I have strong sympathy for him. However, when I first get to know Shylock on junior high school’s Chinese textbook, I didn’t realize his unfortunate and miserable lot. All my feelings towards him are hate even bitterly detest, for he regards money as the chief end and aim of his life and is so cruel to claim a live man’s flesh. I simply consider him as an unpardonable villain with a strong sense of justice that the kids of that age have. Now, when I meet Shylock again with the ability to see things not only from it appears but also from its reasons behind. I know quiet more and my attitude reverse. Shylock is a Jew, a nation which suffer the fullest extent, having limited rights. Money matters much for them, for they possess nothing, no social states, no esteem from others and no health security but money. They can only make a living by lending money at usury. The Christian despise them just because of different religious believes, calling them dogs, spitting at them. They suffer injustice but they don’t do anything wrong themselves. There are historical reasons for this phenomenon. And capitalistic economy is also the reason, for it aggravates the inequality of society. Some are wealth will become wealthier and wealthier and have free wills while others are being exploited. Jewish are the victims, too. They must be tough, smart and diligent in order to protect themselves. Knowing this, I can better understand Shylock’s selfish and ruthless. For the world has never been be kind to them and don’t let them have the feeling of being understood. So when the man who used to despise him ask him to lend money but fails to repay on due. The backlogged emotions of Shylock are released on the court. He tells the insults he suffered and asks for equal rights as human. He strongly claims that no one is born noble or measly. In the end, he gets a bad ending with all his properties being taken away and being betrayed by his only relation, his daughter. With a sigh for Shylock’s fate, this review near the end. Shakespeare’s words are vivid and fine. It’s a great fortune to read this master’s work and get mental harvest and reflection, which guides me to live my own life.。

As a Jewish outsider in Venetian society, Shylock faces discrimination and disdain from the Christian characters. 威尼斯商人观后感英文精选英文威尼斯商人观后感英文:"The Merchant of Venice" - A Reflective ViewThe performance of "The Merchant of Venice" was a captivating experience that left me with a profound understanding of the complexities of human emotions and the intricate dynamics of social interactions. The play, penned by William Shakespeare, masterfully weaves a tapestry of love, jealousy, greed, and mercy in the backdrop of Renaissance Venice. The story revolves around Antonio, a merchant who has lent a considerable amount of money to his friend Bassanio, enabling him to pursue the love of his life, Portia. However, Antonio's financial support is dependent on the unpredictable whims of Shylock, a Jewish moneylender who demands a pound of Antonio's flesh as collateral. This sets the stage for a series of dramatic events that test the bonds of friendship, love, and faith. The acting in this production was outstanding. The actors brought a depth and realism to their characters that made them seem like real people struggling with real emotions. Antonio's desperation and nobility, Bassanio's love and devotion, Portia's wit and wisdom, and Shylock's bitterness and greed were all portrayed with such nuance and authenticity that it was easy to forget that these were actors playing roles. One of the most striking aspects of the play was the complexity of Shylock's character. He is often viewed as a one-dimensional villain, but in this production, I saw a man who was a victim of prejudice and discrimination. His anger and bitterness were a result of his treatment by society, and his demand for justice was not entirely without merit. This portrayalchallenged my own prejudices and made me think more deeply about the issue of antisemitism and the consequences of discrimination. Moreover, the play's exploration of themes like love, loyalty, and forgiveness was incredibly powerful. The fact that Antonio would sacrifice so much for his friend Bassanio showed the depth of their friendship. And Portia's test of Bassanio's love, though unconventional, ultimately revealed the sincerity of his feelings. The play teaches us that true love and friendship are built on trust, understanding, and self-sacrifice.Overall, this production of "The Merchant of Venice" was an enriching and thought-provoking experience. It not only entertained me with its captivating story and excellent acting but also challenged my views and made me think more deeply about the issues it explores. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys Shakespeare or is interested in exploring the complexities of human emotions and social interactions.中文对照翻译:《威尼斯商人》——一种反思《威尼斯商人》的演出是一次引人入胜的经历,让我深刻理解了人类情感的复杂性和社会互动的复杂动态。

The ensuing legal battle is a dramatic representation of the conflict between justice and mercy. One of the most fascinating aspects of the play is its complex portrayal of Shylock. While he is initially presented as a villainous figure, his character is more nuanced than that. Shylock's actions are motivated by revenge and a desire for justice, as he has suffered from discrimination at the hands of the Christian characters. At the same time, his actions are also fueled by greed and a desire for power. The play raises important questions about the nature of justice and whether vengeance is ever truly satisfying. Another major theme of The Merchant of Venice is the role of love in human relationships. Portia and Bassanio's courtship is presented as a pure and genuine love, while the relationship between Jessica, Shylock's daughter, and Lorenzo is more complicated due to the cultural and religious differences between them. Ultimately, it is love and mercy that triumph in the play'sclimactic scene, as Portia cleverly argues in court to save Antonio's life. The Merchant of Venice is also notable for its exploration of religious and cultural differences in Renaissance Italy. The play highlights the prejudice and discrimination faced by Jews, as well as the tension between Christians and Muslims during this time period. It is a reminder of the importance of tolerance and acceptance in a society that is often divided by differences. In conclusion, The Merchant of Venice is a timeless masterpiece of literature that continues to captivate audiences today. With its complex characters and themes, it offers a thought-provoking exploration of the human condition. The play raises questions about justice, love, and the role of cultural and religious differences in society. Despite being written over four hundred years ago, it remains a relevant and important work of art.One of the key themes explored in The Merchant of Venice is the idea of mercy. Shakespeare raises the question of whether justice alone is sufficient for resolving conflicts, or whether mercy also has a place in the legal system. This theme is particularly relevant in the context of Shylock's demand for a pound of flesh from Antonio. While Shylock argues that he has the legal right to his payment, Portia's clever arguments ultimately convince the court to show mercy towards Antonio.Additionally, The Merchant of Venice is a play that explores the nature of friendship. The relationship between Antonio and Bassanio is complex and multi-faceted, and is perhaps one of the most significant relationships in the play. The bond between thetwo men is tested by Bassanio's romantic pursuits and Antonio's financial troubles, but ultimately, it is their loyalty and willingness to sacrifice for each other that prevails. The character of Portia is also worth examining as she represents a strong and intelligent female character in a male-dominated society. Her wit and intelligence are key to her success in the court scene, and her agency is evident in her manipulation of the situation to ensure that justice and mercy are served. Finally, The Merchant of Venice is a play that raises questions about the role of money and commerce in society. The idea of a merchant seeking financial gain above all else, even at the expense of their own personal relationships and moral values, is explored in the character of Antonio. Similarly, the character of Shylock embodies the dangers of greed and the corrupting influence of money on both individuals and society as a whole.Overall, The Merchant of Venice is a play that explores complex themes and ideas that are still relevant today. It encourages audiences to think critically about justice, mercy, friendship, money, and cultural and religious tolerance, making it an enduring work of literature.。

威尼斯商人读后感英文The Merchant of Venice is a play written by William Shakespeare and is considered one of his most controversial works. The story revolves around a merchant named Antonio, who borrows money from a Jewish moneylender named Shylock to help his friend Bassanio court the wealthy heiress Portia. However, when Antonio fails to repay the loan, Shylock demands a pound of his flesh as payment. The play delves into themes of prejudice, justice, and mercy, and has sparked much debate and interpretation since its creation. As a reader, The Merchant of Venice evokes a range of emotions and thoughts. On one hand, the play is a captivating drama with complex characters and a gripping plot. The tension between Antonio and Shylock, as well as the romantic subplot involving Bassanio and Portia, keeps the reader engaged and invested in the outcome. The language and imagery used by Shakespeare also add to the richness of the story, making it a truly immersiveexperience. However, what makes The Merchant of Venice truly remarkable is its exploration of deep and timeless themes. The play delves into the nature of prejudice and discrimination, particularly against the Jewish community. Shylock, the Jewish moneylender, is portrayed as a villainous character, but as the story unfolds, the audience is forced to confront the injustices he has faced and the humanity within him. This portrayal challenges the audience to consider the impact of prejudice and the complexities of human nature.Additionally, The Merchant of Venice raises thought-provoking questions about justice and mercy. The famous courtroom scene, in which Shylock demands his pound of flesh, forces the characters and the audience to grapple with the concepts of legal justice versus moral justice. Portia's clever intervention and the ultimate resolution of the conflict highlight the power of mercy and forgiveness, even in the face of deep-seated animosity. The play also offers a nuanced exploration of the nature of friendship and loyalty. Antonio's willingness to go to extreme lengths to help his friend Bassanio, even at great personal cost, speaks to the depth of their bond. The sacrifices made and the risks taken in the name of friendship serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of human connection and empathy.Furthermore, The Merchant of Venice is a reflection of the complexities of love and relationships. The romantic entanglements of the characters, particularly the courtship of Bassanio and Portia, provide a counterpoint to the darker themes of the play. The exploration of love, trust, and fidelity adds depth and emotional resonance to the story, making it a truly multifaceted work.In conclusion, The Merchant of Venice is a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant play that continues to captivate readers and audiences centuries after its creation. Its exploration of prejudice, justice, mercy, friendship, and love makes it a timeless work that invites reflection and discussion. As a reader, delving into theworld of The Merchant of Venice is a rich and rewarding experience that leaves a lasting impact.。

the merchant of venice is a book that was written by shakespeare. the book tells us such a story:bassanio, a noble venetian, who, having but a small patrimony, had nearly exhausted his little fortune by living in too expensive a manner for his slender means, as men of high rank with small fortunes are too apt to do. antonio was his best friend. whenever bassanio wanted money, antonio assisted him. one day bassanio came to antonio, and wanted antonio to lend him three thousand ducats to marry his lover portia. but antonio had no money on him at that time to lend his friend. so they went together to shylock, the jew, who was a usurer. he was a hard-hearted man, and he hated antonio very much. so he promised antonio at once, but antonio should go with him to a lawyer, and there signed in merry sport a bond, that if he did not repay the money by a certain day, he would forfeit a pound of flesh, to be cut off from any part of his body that shylock pleased. antonio promised. but after bassanio married, antonio’s ship sank, so he had no money to return to shylock. shylock hated antonio so he wanted the pound of flesh. bassanio knew that and took the money twenty times over to save his friend. but shylock only wanted to kill antonio. when there seemed to be no way to help antonio, portia came. she dressed herself as a man who was a lawyer. she contended with shylock on the law court. she persuaded shylock to accept the money but not the flesh. but shylock only wanted to kill antonio; he didn’t accept the money. at last portia found a rip in the agreement. so she saved antonio and shylock got punished. shylock is a villain, and in our life, we sometimes can barge up against the man like shylock. maybe they want our money or something else. we do not want to come into contact with such men, but not everything is following our wills. if we come up against the villains, we can use our wit to beat them.first, when we find he is a villain, we must be calm and brave; we mustn’t be panic. we can speak to him and tell him you have no money, and we can make him think that we are weak or a little afraid. then he is relaxed, we can call our relations or the police to help ourselves. or we even can call others for help. others may help us. on the other hand, if others need our help, we should do our best to help them. we must use our wit to fight against the villains. when we come up against the villains, we must believe that righteousness can always overcome improbity. if we know that, we can see others are helping us and we are helping others who need our help. we are together building a more clear and wonderful world.。

ShylockShylock obviously is most noteworthy figure in the play, who is a selfish, mean, greedy, and bloodshirsty Jewish merchant. Shylock's function in this play is to be the obstacle, the man who stands in the way of the love stories; such a man is a traditional figure in romantic comedies. Something or someone must impede young, romantic love; here, it is Shylock and the many and various ways that he is linked to the three sets of lovers. The fact that he is a Jew is, in a sense, accidental. He offers to help Antonio under the premise of a rahter cold contract that if Antonio fails to return the money on time he shall cut a pound of meat form he so that he can have the chance to revenge people like Antonio. And when he gets the chance he will never lose it. In the other way , he is so mean that as if money is even more important than his dauguter. When his dauguter esacaped with a Christian , he shouted in the streetand would rather his dauguter have died. But the character of Shylock has also been the subject of much critical debate,While in some way, as you look Shylock form another angle, you may find he is quite perthetic. there is the him who suffers the loss of his daughter, his property, and, very importantly for him, his religion. He is the victim of the agewhen Jews were treated cruelly and badly, thus he wants to revenge but end with tragidy.AntonioAntonio in this play is a good merchant of Venice who is always willing and ready to help. Also, he is not so successful but with lots of ambition. When Basanio turned to him for help he agreed without doubt though he did not have the ability by that time. What’s more ,regardless of Basanio’s reject,he signed a contrcat ,which may cause his life, with Shylock in order to help Bassnio to earn the heart of his lover. And when he doesn’t teturn the money in time ,he is willing to take all the consequence . But Antonio has risked the entirety of his fortune on overseas trading ventures, yet he agrees to guarantee the potentially lethal loan Bassanio secures from Shylock . From this part ,we can see that Antonio is very impulsive ,he does not think twice before he signs the contract with Shylock, at least ,I think he should talk with Basanio about it . If he had took it seriously maybe he will not be involved in this trouble. Sometimes we should take our ability into consideration before doing something stupid. But Antonio ends the play as happily as he can, restored to wealtheven if not delivered into love .So ,to conclude ,Antonio is a kind hearted man that will do everything for his friends.。

威尼斯商人英文简介Venice, 1596. Melancholy Antonio loves the youthful Bassanio, so when Bassanio asks for 3000 ducats, Antonio says yes before knowing it's to sue for the hand of Portia. His capital tied up in merchant ships at sea, Antonio must go to Shylock, a Jewish moneylender he reviles. Shylock wraps his grudge in kindness, offering a three-month loan at no interest, but if not repaid, Antonio will owe a pound of flesh. The Jew's daughter elopes with a Christian, whetting Shylock's hatred. While Bassanio's away wooing Portia, Antonio's ships founder, and Shylock demands his pound of flesh. With court assembled and a judgment due, Portia swings into action to save Bassanio's friend.Although critics tend to agree that Shylock is The Merchantof Venice’s most noteworthy figure, no consensus has been reached on whether to read him as a bloodthirsty bogeyman, a clownish Jewish stereotype, or a tragic figure whose sense of decency has been fractured by the persecution he endures. Certainly, Shylock is the play’s antagonist, and he is menacing enough to seriously imperil the -happiness of Venice’s businessmen and young lovers alike. Shylock is also, however, a creation of circumstance; even in his single-minded pursuit of a pound of flesh, his frequent mentions of the cruelty he has endured at Christian hands make it hard for us to label him a naturalborn monster. In one of Shakespeare’s most famous monologues, for example, Shylock argues that Jews are humans and calls his quest for vengeance the product of lessons taught to him by the cruelty of Venetian citizens. On the other hand, Shylock’s coldly calculated attempt to revenge the wrongs doneto him bymurdering his persecutor, Antonio, prevents us from viewing him in a primarily positive light. Shakespeare gives us unmistakably human moments, but he often steers us against Shylock as well, painting him as a miserly, cruel, and prosaic figure.Portia Quick-witted, wealthy, and beautiful, Portia embodies the virtues that are typical of Shakespeare’s heroines —it is no surprise that she emerges as the antidote to Shylock’s malice. At the beginning of the play, however, we do not see Portia’s potential for initiative and resourcefulness, as she is a near prisoner, feeling herself absolutely bound to follow her father’s dying wishes. This opening appearance, however, proves to be a revealing introduction to Portia, who emerges as that rarest of combinations—a free spirit who abidesrigidly by rules. Rather than ignoring the stipulations of her father’s will, she watches a stream of suitors passher by, happy to see these particular suitors go, but sad that she has no choice in the matter. When Bassanio arrives, however, Portia proves herself to be highly resourceful, begging the man she loves to stay a while before picking a chest, and finding loopholes in the will’s provision that we never thought possible. Also, in her defeat of Shylock Portia prevails by applying a more rigid standard than Shylock himself, agreeing that his contract very much entitles him to his pound of flesh, but adding that it does not allow for any loss of blood. Anybody can break the rules, but Portia’s effectiveness comes from her ability to make the law work for her. Portia rejects the stuffiness that rigid adherence to the law might otherwise suggest. In her courtroom appearance, she vigorously appliesthe law, but still flouts convention by appearing disguised as a man. After depriving Bassanio of his ring, she stops the prank before it goes to far, but still takes it far enough to berate Bassanio and Graziano for their callousness, and she even insinuates that she has been unfaithful.Antonio Although the play’s title refers to him, Antonio is a rather lackluster character. He emerges in Act I, scene i as a hopeless depressive, someone who cannot name the source of his melancholy and who, throughout the course of the play, devolves into a self-pitying lump, unable to muster the energy required to defend himself against execution. Antonio never names the cause of his melancholy, but the evidence seems to point to his being in love, despite his denial of this idea in Act I, scene i. The most likely object of his affection is Bassanio, who takes full advantage of the merchant’s boundlessfeelings for him. Antonio has risked the entirety of his fortune on overseas trading ventures, yet he agrees to guarantee the potentially lethal loan Bassanio secures from Shylock. In the context of his unrequited and presumably unconsummated relationship with Bassanio, Antonio’s willingness to offer up a pound of his own flesh seems particularly important, signifying a union that grotesquely alludes to the rites of marriage, where two partners become ―one flesh.‖ Further evidence of the nature of Antonio’s feelings for Bassanio appears later in the play, when Antonio’s proclamations resonate with the hyperbole and self-satisfaction of a doomed lover’s declaration: ―Pray God Bassanio come / To see me pay his debt, and then I care not‖ (III.iii.35–36). Antonio ends the play as happily as he can, restored to wealth even if not delivered into love. Without a mate, he is indeed the ―taintedwether‖—or castrated ram—of the flock, and he will likely return to his favorite pastime of moping about the streets of Venice (IV.i.113). After all, he has effectively disabled himself from pursuing his other hobby—abusing Shylock—by insisting that the Jew convert to Christianity. Although a sixteenth-century audience might have seenthis demand as merciful, as Shylock is saving himself from eternal damnation by converting, we are less likely to be convinced. Not only does Antonio’s reputation as an anti-Semite precede him, but the only instance in the play when he breaks out of his doldrums is his ―storm‖ against Shylock(I.iii.132). In this context, Antonio proves that the dominant threads of his character are melancholy and cruelty.。

Outline I.IntroductionII.Analysis of Antonio2.1 Antonio's attitude towards Shylock2.2 The relationship between Antonio and Bassanio III.ConclusionsBibliographyAnalysis of AntonioI. IntroductionThe merchant of Venice is written by Shakespeare. It is Shakespeare's early comedy which is full of social satire. The Merchant of Venice talks about the affairs between Bassanio, Portia, Shylock and Antonio.Antonio is a Venice merchant who is best friends with Bassanio and often supports him with loans. He is wealthy, but at the start of the play, all of his money is tied up with his five ships which are at sea. He takes a loan from Shylock, a Jewish money lender who he has mistreated in the past. The forfeiture of the bond is a pound of his flesh. Unfortunately, all of his ships were broken in a storm. He realized that he were not able to pay the money back to Shylock on time. When he were getting ready to be executed, Portia pretended a judge and saved him. Antonio is an example of what is considered a "good Christian" in the play—he is generous and by their standard, "merciful". It seems that he is spotless and lackluster. But there are some queries about him. what things does Shakespeare want to show in this character? We need to explore them gradually. In my papers, I will discuss the Antonio's character, and analyse the relationship with Shylock, Antonio and Bassanio. I want to reveal a new Antonio in the essay. II.Analysis of Antonio2.1 Antonio's attitude towards ShylockShylock is a rich Jew. He makes a living by usury. But it is against the Christian law. So in the eyes of Antonio, Shylock is a sinner. He detested Shylock's behavior. Furthermore, both of them are wealthy, if Shylock is a poor usurer, Antonio will not notice and insult him. But the Jew is as rich as Antonio. Merchants always tend to envy the people who is equally rich. Even Antonio is mercy, but he is still a merchant. This is a nature of traders, he is unable to get rid of it. And shylock's treasure is earned by a illegal way, this fact makes his envy converts into indignation. He vents his discontentment by denouncing Antonio's illegality. And his insult is compounded by Antonio's self-surrender.On the other hand, Antonio didn't really hate Antonio. He disdained him. Becausewhen he can't lend money to help Bassanio, he talked with Shylock to persuade him to lend money to Bassanio. He even didn't afraid that the rich Jew would refuse his request. It is obvious that Antonio never regarded Shylock as a human. But Shylock really hated him, and he wanted to revenge. So he demanded that if it was not repaid in time, the forfeiture was a pound of Antonio's flesh. Antonio was not fool, he knew that it is a plot. But he accepted the demand without any hesitate. It shows that Antonio is rather conceited.2.2 The relationship between Antonio and BassanioBassanio was best friends with Antonio and often borrowed money from Antonio. As his friend, Antonio was willing to do everything for him. In the play, in order to help Bassanio to borrow 3000 ducats, Antonio was be willing to cut one pound of flesh from his chest as penalty. He is generosity. As a merchant he should be scrimp, but in Antonio's eyes, Bassanio is everything. In the court, when face to Bassanio, he acts as a poet. Both Shylock and Antonio are merchant. But compared with Shylock, he is more grace. He likes a saint, and also likes a prince who frees from mortal life to say good by to his lover."Only a little: I am arm'd and well prepared.Give me your hand, Bassanio; fare you well.Commend me to your honourable wife;Tell her the process of Antonio's end;Say how I loved you; speak me fair in death; And, when the tale is told, bid her be judgeWhether Bassanio had not once a love."Either did he criticize Bassanio, nor did he asked him to avenge for him, he just clasped Bassanio's hand and expressed his love to Bassanio. He begged Bassanio to tell his death to his wife. And let his wife to judge him, in fact , he want to get the answer from Bassanio, who loves him more. And Bassanio give him a answer:"Antonio, I am married to a wifeWhich is as dear to me as life itself; But life itself, my wife, and all the world,Are not with me esteemed above your life;I would lose all, oh, sacrifice them allHere to this devil, to deliver you."In these actor's lines, Bassanio showed his real feelings. He didn't say "love", he just thanked him, but Antonio conveyed his love in every words. But Bassanio said that, in his eyes, Antonio was most important in the world, he was willing to fall into the hell to deliver him. Though Antonio couldn't attain his love, but he contented to know that Bassanio can sacrifice his life for him. Even a spoony girl can't give her life to the lover. Bassanio proved Antonio's existence value and his respect for Antonio. He is not a saint. But the love makes him understand the life and the death. This special love infuses a new enthusiasm into his life. So when he faced the death, Antonio showed a poet's demeanor and the Shakespeare's ideal love.III.ConclusionsHe is a new bourgeoisie businessman. He is endowed with endless virtue. Compared with Bassanio, he is more spoony. He is magnanimous, in the face of Shylock's shameless plot, he unexpectedly resigned. Faced the threat of death, he was brave and behaved as a knight. He is Antonio. Shakespeare shows his nobler love for a man by this character. In his play, the love between women and men seems so narrow. But Antonio's selfless devotion moves every people. And his feelings for Bassanio makes people can't help to imagining.Once I watched a film about this play. In the end, Antonio strolled alone under the moonlight. At that time he didn't like a merchant , he liked a poet, who is elegance and sentimental. And he also liked a lover who was waiting for his love returning. As if he is Shakespeare himself who sees through the world.Bibliography[1] The Merchant of Venice , ACT IV Scene, 1 Venice. The court of justice /programs/view/CC6UnTNwEck/。
