2011年12月英语三级考试最后冲刺试题及答案(第十三套)Part II Reading Comprehension (35 minutes) (40%)Directions: There are 4 reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage IQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:Scientists are trying to make the deserts into good land again. They want to bring water to the deserts so that people can live and grow food. Even so, more and more of the earth is becoming desert all the time. Why? Scientists think that people make deserts. People are doing bad things to the earth. Some places on the earth do not get very much rain. Yet, they still do not become deserts. This is because there are some small green plants growing there. Plants help keep water in the earth. Plants do not let the wind blow the dirt away. Without plants, the land can become a desert much more easily.A man decides to make a farm in a very dry place. He digs in the earth and takes away the grass and plants that are already growing on the dry land.He makes a farm. He puts plants in rows. The sun is very hot. It makes the land even drier. When the rain comes, it runs between the rows of plants. It washes the good dirt away. When the wind comes, it blows between the rows of plants. It blows the good dirt away.Soon the land is not good enough for a farm any more. The man lets his animals eat all the plants on it. Now the land does not have any plants on it. The sun and wind dry the land and all of the good dirt away. Now the land is a desert.21. A desert is probably _______.A) grassyB) treelessC) wetD) muddy22. Land is becoming desert because of lack of _______.A) rainB) windC) peopleD) plants23. It can be inferred from the passage that _______.A) it is bad to plant in rows in a dry place.B) it is better to raise animals on dry land than to make a farm.C) it is bad to make a farm in a dry place, but it is good to raise animals there.D) all lands that don’t get very rain are deserts.25. What’s the purpose of the writer to give a n example of the man?A) To criticize him.B) To tell an interesting story.C) To prove man makes deserts.D) To prove the hot sun makes a desert.Passage IIQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:Museums are places where collections of objects are preserved and displayed. The objects may be anything found in nature or made by man. There are museums devoted to art, science, history, industry, and technology. But museums are no longer just storehouses for collections. Today nearly all museums, large or small, carry on educational programs. Museums offer guided tours, lectures, films, music and art lessons, and other attractions.Museums work constantly to improve their collections and ways of displaying them. All museums are always on the watch for new additions to their collections. Works of art are bought from art dealers and collectors or at auction( 拍卖)sales. Museums also accept gifts and bequests(遗物),but the large museums no longer accept everything that is offered to them. They accept only objects or collections that meet their high standards. What is to be gained from visiting museums? Museum exhibits can teach us about the world in which we live—the materials it is made of , the trees and plants that covers it, and the animals that have lived on it since its beginning. We can learn about the activities of man—his history and development and his accomplishments in arts and crafts.26.The first paragraph deals with ____.A) what museums preserveB) what kind of objects museums displayC) where museums obtain their objectsD) how museums function27. The last paragraph is about_____.A) the knowledge one gets from visiting museumsB) the things one can see in museumC) the world and the people living in itD) museum collections from other landsPassage IIIQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage:If there is any single factor that makes for success in living, it is the ability to profit by defeat. Every success I know has been achieved because the person was able to analyze defeat and actually profit by it in his next undertaking. Confuse defeat with failure, and you are doomed indeed to failure, for it isn’t defeatthat makes you fail: it is your own refusal to see in defeat the guide and encouragement to success.Defeats are nothing to be ashamed of. They are routine incidents in the life of every man who achieves success. But defeat is a dead loss unless you do face it without feeling ashamed, analyze it and learn why you failed. Defeat, in other words, can help to cure its own cause. Not only does defeat prepare us for success, but nothing else can arouse within us such a compelling desire to succeed. I f you let a baby grasp a rod and to pull it away, he will cling more and more tightly until his whole weight is suspended. It is this same reaction that should give you new and greater strength every time you are defeated. If you fully use the power which defeat gives, you can accomplish with it far more than what you are capable of.31. The author _______.A) orders you to analyze defeatB) wants you to face defeatC) advises you to let a baby grasp a rodD) warns you not to confuse defeat with failure32. Defeat is valuable _______.A) because it is a factorB) because it isn’t defeat that makes you failC) because it provides the guide and encouragement to successD) because it is not a thing to be ashamed of33. What does the author know?A) He knows every success in life.B) He knows the factor making for success.C) He knows every man who is able to analyze defeat.D) He knows the life of every man.34. The person who was able to analyze defeat is likely _______A) to be a successorB) to face it with feeling ashamedC) to achieve successD) to be ashamed of it35. What does the author advise one to do with the power which defeat gives?A) One should explore it.B) One should explain it.C) One should let a baby grasp a rod.D) One should learn it.Passage IVQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:Through a series of experiments an American scientist has obtained an understanding of the social structure of the most complex of ant societies. The ants examined are the only creatures other than man to have given up hunting and collecting for a completely agricultural way of life. In their underground nests they cultivate gardens on soil made from finely chopped leaves. This is a complex operation requiring considerable division of labor. The workers of this type of ant can be divided into four groups according to size. Each of the groups performs a particular set of jobs. The making and care of the gardens and the nursing of the young ants are done by the smallest workers. Slightly larger workers are responsible for chopping up leaves to make them suitable for use in the gardens and for cleaning the nest. A third group of still larger ants do the construction work and collect fresh leaves from outside the nest. The largest are the soldier ants, responsible for defending the nest.To find out how good the various size-groups are at different tasks, the scientist measured the amount of work done by the ants against the amount of energy they used. He examined first the gathering and carrying of leaves. He selected one of the size-groups, and then measured how efficiently these ants could find leaves and run back to the nest. Then he repeated the experiment for each of the other size-groups. In this way he could see whether any group could do the job more efficiently than the group normally undertaking it.The intermediate-sized ants that normally perform this task proved to be the most efficient for their energy costs, but when the scientist examined the whole set of jobs performed by each group of ants it appeared that some sizes of worker ant were not ideally suited to the particular jobs they performed.36. In which way are the ants different from other non-human societies?A) Individuals perform different functions.B) They do not need to look for shelter.C) Individuals vary in social status.D) They do not need to search for food.37. It seems that smaller ants perform more of the _______.A) construction tasksB) domestic tasksC) defensive workD) heavy work38. 2011年12月英语三级考试最后冲刺试题及答案(第九套)
Part II Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are 4 reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage IQuestions 1 to 5 are based on the following passages:In 1960s, medical researchers Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe developed a checklist of stressful events. They appreciated the tricky point that any major change can be stressful. Negative events like “serious illness of a family member” were high on the list, but so were some positive life-changing events, like marriage. When you take the Holmes–Rahe test you must remember that the score does not reflect how you deal with stress – it only shows how much you have to deal with. And we now know that the way you handle these events dramatically affects your chances of staying healthy.By the early 1970s, hundreds of similar studies had followed Holmes and Rahe. And millions of Americans who work and live under stress worried over the reports. Somehow, the research got boiled down to a memorable message. Women’s magazines ran headlines like “Stress causes illness!”If you want to stay physically and mentally healthy, the article said, avoid stressful events. But such simplistic advice is impossible to follow. Even if stressful events are dangerous, many –like the death of a loved one – are impossible to avoid. Moreover, any warning to avoid all stressful events is a prescription for staying away from opportunities as well as trouble. Since any change can be stressful, a person who wanted to be completely free of stress would never marry, have a child, take a new job or move. The notion that all stress makes you sick also ignores a lot of what we know about people. It assumes we’re all vulnerable (脆弱的) and passive in the face of adversity. But what about human initiative and creativity? Many come through periods of stress with more physical and mental vigor than they had before. We also know that a long time without change or challenge can lead to boredom, and physical and mental strain.1. The result of Holmes–Rahe medical research tells us ______ .A) the way you handle major events may cause stressB) what should be done to avoid stressC) what kind of event would cause stressD) how to cope with sudden change of life2. The studies on stress in the early 1970’s led to ______.A) widespread concern over its harmful effectsB) great panic over the mental disorder it could causeC) an intensive research into stress –related illnessesD) popular avoidance of stressful jobs3. The score of the Holmes–Rahe test shows .A) how much pressure you are underB) how positive events can change your lifeC) how stressful a major event can beD) how you can deal with life –changing events4. Why is “such simplistic advice”(Line 1, Para. 3) impossible to follow?A) No one can stay on the same job for long.B) No prescription is effective in relieving stress.C) People have to get married someday.D) You could be missing opportunities as well.5. According to the passage people who have experienced ups and downs may become ________.A) nervous when faced with difficultiesB) physically and mentally strainedC) more capable of coping with adversityD) indifferent toward what happens to themPassage IIQuestions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:The octopus (章鱼)’s reputation as a human-killer isn’t simply an exaggeration –it is a total myth. The octopus can indeed be a deadly hunter, but only of its natural prey. Clams, mussels, crabs, lobsters and an occasional sick or unwary fish have reason to be frightened of this multi-armed predator, but a person is much too large to interest even the biggest octopus. Even a giant among octopuses is much smaller than most people imagine. Far from being large enough to engulf (吞下) a submarine, as monster octopuses in movies have been known to do, the largest octopuses, found on the Pacific coast, weigh around 110 pounds and grow to a diameter of no more than ten feet. The hard, parrot-like beak (嘴) of an octopus is not used for attacking deep-sea divers, but for cutting open crabs and lobsters. Indeed, the octopus possesses such a tiny throat that it cannot swallow large pieces of meat. It feeds instead by pouring digestive juices into its victims, and then sucking up the soupy remains. A clam or scallop (扇贝) that finds itself in the grasp of an octopus has only a short time to live. But human beings are perfectly safe. Still, people rarely care to venture close enough to these timid creatures to get a good look at them.6. This passage is mainly about _________.A) the horrors of the octopusB) the largest octopus in the worldC) octopuses and their behaviourD) the octopus’s deadly hunting method7. It is implied but not stated in the passage that _______________.A) people have groundless fears about the octopusB) the octopus is not interested in human beings because they are too large for itC) the octopus is afraid of human beingsD) the octopus is a very vicious sea animal8. Which of the following statements is true?A) The octopus usually uses its eight tentacles to tear its prey into pieces before eating it up.B) The octopus always catches sick and careless fish.C) The octopus never attacks people.D) The octopus can engulf submarines.9. The hard beak of the octopus is used for .A) attacking deep-sea diversB) cutting up large pieces of meatC) cutting open its preyD) defending itself10. From the passage, we can conclude that .A) the octopus is not dangerous to man, as many people believe it to beB) people often fear creatures that are not dangerous to themC) the octopus only hunts its natural preyD) things described in movies are not to be believedPassage IIIQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:These days there are so many stories about the criminal activities of athletes that sports pages are beginning to look like police reports. What’s going on? American sports fans ask over their morning toast and coffee, What’s happening to our heroes? It’s not difficult to understand our desire for athletes to be heroes. On the surface, at least, athletes display a vital and indomitable spirit; they are gloriously alive inside their bodies. And sports do allow us to witness acts that can legitimately be described as courageous, thrilling, beautiful, even noble. In an increasingly complicated and disorderly world, sports are still an arena in which we can regularly witness a certain kind of greatness.Yet there’s something of a paradox here, for the very qualities a society tends to seek in its heroes –selflessness, social consciousness, and the like –are precisely the opposite of those needed to transform a talented but otherwise unremarkable neighborhood kid into a Michael Jordan. To become a star athlete, you have to have an extremely competitive outlook and you have to be totally focused on the development of our own physical skills. These qualities may well make a great athlete, but they don’t necessarily make a great person. On top of this, our society reinforces these traits by the system it has created to produce athletes –a system characterized by limited responsibility and enormous privilege. The athletes themselves suffer the costs of this system. Trained to measure themselves perpetually against the achievements of those around them, many young athletes develop a sense of what sociologist Walter Schafer has termed “conditional self-worth”. They learn very quickly that they will be accepted by the important figures in their lives –parents, coaches and peers as long as they are perceived as “winners”. Unfortunately they become conceited and behave as if their athletic success will last forever.11. In paragraph 1, we know that when Americans read the sports pages they ______.A) are able to get information about sports gamesB) know more about athletes’private livesC) are surprised to find that their heroes are committing various crimes.D) are like reading police reports.12. The author argues that __________.A) the qualities that make a successful athlete don’t necessarily make a great personB) the qualities a society seeks in its heroes are precisely the ones needed to transform a talented child into a great athleteC) our society has created an effective system to transform athletes into heroesD) our society is responsible for reinforcing the qualities of great athletes14. By saying that young athletes develop a sense of “conditional self-worth”(paragraph 4), the author means that _______.A) they are valued by others as long as they winB) young athletes are easily accepted by their parents, coaches and peersC) young athletes are always perceived as winnersD) young athletes lack the sense of self-worth15. What is the author’s attitude toward today’s social system characterized by limited responsibility and enormous privilege?A) Positive. B) Favorable.C) Critical. D) Ironical.Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:In 1993, New York State ordered stores to charge a deposit on beverage (饮料) containers. Within a year, consumers had returned millions of aluminum cans and glass and plastic bottles. Plenty of companies were eager to accept the aluminum and glass as raw materials for new products. But because few could figure out what to do with the plastic, much of it wound up buried in landfills (垃圾填埋场). The problem was not limited to New York. Unfortunately, there were too few uses for second-hand plastics.Today, one out of five plastic soda bottles is recycled (回收利用) in the United States. The reason for the change is that now there are dozens of companies across the country buying discarded plastic soda bottles and turning them into fence posts, paint brushes, etc.As the New York experience shows, recycling involves more than simply separating valuable materials from the rest of the rubbish. A discard remains a discard until somebody figures out how to give it a second life –and until economic arrangements exist to give that second life value. Without adequate markets to absorb materials collected for recycling, throwaways actually depress prices for used materials.Shrinking landfill space, and rising costs for burying and burning rubbish are forcing local governments to look more closely at recycling. In many areas, the East Coast especially, recycling is already the least expensive waste–management option. For every ton of waste recycled, a city avoids paying for its disposal, which, in parts of New York, amounts to saving of more than $ 100 per ton. Recycling also stimulates the local economy by creating jobs and trims the pollution control and energy costs of industries that make recycled products by giving them a more refined raw material.16. What regulation was issued by New York State concerning beverage containers?A) Average companies should be responsible for collecting and reusing discarded plastic soda bottles.B) Throwaways should be collected by the state for recycling.C) A fee should be charged on used containers for recycling.D) Consumers had to pay for beverage containers and could get their money back onreturning them.17. The returned plastic bottles in New York used to .A) end up somewhere undergroundB) be turned into raw materialsC) have a second-life valueD) be separated from other rubbish18. The key problem in dealing with returned plastic beverage containers is .A) to sell them in at a profitable priceB) how to turn them into useful thingsC) how to reduce their recycling costsD) to lower the prices for used materials19. Recycling has become the first choice for the disposal of rubbish because .A) local governments find it easy to manageB) recycling has great appeal for the joblessC) recycling causes little pollutionD) other methods are more expensive20. It can be concluded from the passage that .A) rubbish is a potential remedy for the shortage of raw materialsB) local governments in the U.S. can expect big profits from recyclingC) recycling is to be recommended both economically and environmentallyD) landfills will still be widely used for waste disposalPart II Reading Comprehension (20%)Directions: There are 40 incomplete sentences in this part. 1-5 B C A A A 6-10 D B D C C11-13 C A C 14-16 C C B 17-20 D C D CFor Americans, time is money. They say, “You only get so much time in this life: you’d better use it wisely.” The future will not be 21 better than the past or present, 22 unless people use their time for constructive activities. Thus, Americans 23 admire a “well-organized” person, one who has a written list of things to do and a 24 schedule for doing them. The ideal person is punctual and is considerate of other people’s time. They do not 25 waste people’s time with conversation or other activity that has no 26 visible beneficial outcome. The American attitude toward time is not necessarily 27 shared by others, especially non- Europeans. They are more likely to regard time as 28 something that simply there around them not something they can use. One of the more difficult things many students must adjust to in the States is the notion that time must be saved whenever possible and used wisely every day.In this context the fast food industry can be seen as 29 a clear example of American culture product McDonal d’s, KFC, and other fast food establishments are successful in a country where many people want to spend the least amount of time preparing and eating meals. As McDonald’s restaurants spread around the world, they have been viewed as 30 a symbol of American society and culture bringing not just hamburgers but an emphasis on speed, efficiency, and shiny cleanliness.Passage one31. A。

Part II Reading Comprehension (35 minutes) (40%)Directions: There are 4 reading passages in this part. What’s the purpose of the writer to give an example of the man?A) To criticize him.B) To tell an interesting story.C) To prove man makes deserts.D) To prove the hot sun makes a desert.Passage IIQuestions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage:Museums are places where collections of objects are preserved and displayed. Confuse defeat with failure, and you are doomed indeed to failure, for it isn’t defeat that makes you fail: it is your own refusal to see in defeat the guide and encouragement to success.Defeats are nothing to be ashamed of. Not a ll will be saved, and perhaps not all deserve to be saved. There are low-quality schools just as there are low-quality business. We have no obligation to save themsimply beca use they exist. But many thriving institutions that deserve to continue are threatened. Th ey are doing a fine job educationally, but they are caught in a financial difficulty, with no way to reduce rising costs or increase revenues significantly. Raising tuition doesn’t brin g in more revenue, for each time tuition goes up. Schools are bad businesses, whether public or private, not usually because of bad management but because of the nature of the enterprise. They lose money on every customer, and they can go bankrupt either fro m too few students or too many students. Even a very good college is a very bad busi ness.It is such colleges, thriving but threatened, that I worry about. Low enrollment is not their chief problem. Even with full enrollments, they may go under. Efforts to save them, and preferably to keep them private , are a national necessity. There is no basis for arguing that private schools are bound to be better than publi c schools. There are abundant examples to the contrary. Anyone can name state univers ities and colleges that rank as the finest in the nation and the world. It is now inevitable that public institutions will be dominant, and therefore diversity is a national necessity. D iversity in the way we support schools tends to give us a healthy diversity in the forms of education. In an imperfect society such as ours, uniformity of education throughout th e nation could be dangerous. In an imperfect society, diversity is a positive good. Eager supporters of public higher education know the importance of sustaining private higher e ducation.1. In the passage, the author appeals to the public to support ___.A. private higher education in generalB. public higher education in generalC. high-quality private universities and collegesD. high-quality state universities and colleges2. According to the passage, schools are bad businesses because of ___.A. the nature of schoolB. poor teachersC. bad managementD. too few students3. What does the phrase ―go under‖( Par. 2, sen tence 3) probably mean?___.A. have low tuitionB. get into difficultiesC. do a bad job educationallyD. have high tuition4. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. There are many cases to indicate that private schools are superior to public scho ols.B. The author thinks diversity of education is preferable to uniformity of education.C. A high-quality university is always a good business.D. Each time tuition is raised, the enrollment goes up.Humanity’s primal efforts to systematize the concepts of size, shape, and number a re usually regarded as the earliest mathematics. However, the concept of number and th e counting process developed so long before the time of recorded history ( there is arch aeological evidence that counting was employed by humans as far back as 50,000 years ago) that the manner of this development is largely conjectural. Imagining how it proba bly came about is not difficult. The argument that humans, even in prehistoric times, had some number sense, at least to theextent of recognizing the concepts of more and les s when some objects were added to or taken away from a small group, seems fair, for studies have shown that some animals possess such a sense. With the gradual evolution of society, simply counting became imperative. A tribe ha d to know how many members it had and how many enemies, and a shepherd needed to know if the flock of sheep was decreasing in size. Probably the earliest way of keepi ng a count was by some simple tally method, employing the principle of one-to-one corr espondence. In keeping a count of sheep, for example, one finger per sheep could be t urned under, counts could also be maintained by making scratches in the dirt or on a st one, by cutting notches in a piece of wood, or by tying knots in a string. Then, perhaps later, an assortment of vocal sounds was developed as a word tally against the number of objects in a small group. And still late, with the refinement of writi ng, a set of sighs was devised to stand for these numbers. Such an imagined developm ent is supported by reports of anthropologists in their studies of present-day societies tha t are thought to be similar to those of early humans.5. What does the passage mainly discuss?___A. The efforts of early humans to care for herds of animals.B. The development of writing.C. The beginnings of mathematics.D. Similarities in number sense between humans and animals.6. The word ―conjectural‖in line 4 is closest in meaning to ___.A. complexB. based on guessingC. unbelievableD. supported by careful research7. What is the basic principle of the tally method described in the second paragraph?A. The count is recorded permanently.B. Calculations provide the total count.C. Large quantities are represented by symbols.D. Each marker represents a single object.8. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as an early method of counting?A. Cutting notchesB. Bending fingersC. Piling stonesD. Tying knotsA good modern newspaper is an extraordinary p0iece of reading. It is remarkable fi rst forwhat it contains: the range of news from local crime to international politics, from s ports to business to fashion to science, and the range of comment and special features as well, from editorial page to feature articles, from interviews to criticism of books, art, t heatre, and music. A newspaper is even more remarkable for the way one reads it: nev er completely, never straight through, but always by jumping from here to there, in and out, glancing at one piece, reading another article all the way through, reading just a few paragraphs of the next. A good modern newspaper offers a variety to attract many dif ferent readers, but far more than any one reader is interested in. What brings this variet y together in one place is its topicality, its immediate relation to what is happening in yo ur world and your locality now. But immediacyand the speed of production that goes wi th it mean also that much of what appears in a newspaper has no more than transient value. For all these reasons, not two people really read the same paper: what each per son does is to put together, out of the pages of that day’s paper, his own selection and sequence, his own newspaper. For all these reasons, reading newspapers efficiently, wh ich means getting what you want from them without missing things you need but without wasting time, demands skill and self-awareness as you modify and apply the technique s of reading.9. A modern newspaper is remarkable for all the following except its ___.A. wide coverageB. uniform styleC. speed in reporting newsD. popularity10. It can be concluded from the passage that newspaper readers ___.A. apply reading techniques skillfullyB. jump from on newspaper to anotherC. appreciate the variety of a newspaperD. usually read a newspaper selectively12. A good newspaper offers ―a variety‖to readers because ___.A. it tries to serve different readersB. it has to cover things that happen in a certain localityC. readers are difficult to pleaseD. readers like to read different newspapersHe was in the first third-grade class I taught at Saint Mary’s School in Morris, Min nesota. Then I told them to think of the nicest thing the y could say about each of their classmates and write it down.It took the remainder of the class period to finish the assignment, but as the studen ts left the room, each one handed me the papers. Charlie smiled. Mark said, ―Thank y ou forteaching me, Sister. Have a good weekend.‖That Saturday, I wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of pape r, and I listed what everyone else had said about that individual. On Monday I gave eac h student his or her list. Some of them ran tow pages. Before long, th4e entire class was smiling. ―Really?‖I heard whispered. ―I never kne w that meant anything to anyone!‖―I didn’t know others liked me so much!‖No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. Several years later, after I retu rned from a vacation, my parents met me at the airport. From them I knew that Mark w as killed in Vietnam. So I attended the funeral. After the funeral, Mark’s father took a w allet out of his pocket. ―They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it.‖Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of notebook paper that h ad obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. I knew without looking that th e papers were the ones on which I had listed all the good things each of Mark’s class mates had said about him.Mark’s classmates started to gather around us. Charlie smiled rather sheepishly and said, ―I still have my list. It’s in the top drawer of my desk at home.‖Chuck’s wife sai d, ―Chuck asked me to put his in our wedding album.‖That’s when I finally sat down and cried. 2011年12月英语三级考试最后冲刺试题及答案(第十一套)
2011年12月英语三级考试最后冲刺试题及答案(第十一套)Part II Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are 4 reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices mark ed A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the correspondin g letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage IQuestions 1 to 4 are based on the following passages:These days there are so many stories about the criminal activities of athletes that sports pages are beginning to look like po lice reports. What’s going on? American sports fans ask over their morning toast and coffee, What’s happening to our heroes? It’s not difficult to understand our desire for athletes to be heroes. On the surface, at least, athletes display a vital and indomitable spirit; they are gloriously alive inside the ir bodies. And sports do allow us to witness acts that can legitimately be described as c ourageous, thrilling, beautiful, even noble. In an increasingly complicated and disorderly world, sports are still an arena in which we can regularly witness a certain kind of great ness.Yet there’s something of a paradox here, for the very qualities a society tends to se ek in its heroes –selflessness, social consciousness, and the like –are precisely the op posite of those needed to transform a talented but otherwise unremarkable neighborhood kid into a Michael Jordan. To become a star athlete, you have to have an extremely co mpetitive outlook and you have to be totally focused on the development of our own ph ysical skills. These qualities may well make a great athlete, butthey don’t necessarily m ake a great person. On top of this, our society reinforces these traits by the system it h as created to produce athletes –a system characterized by limited responsibility and en ormous privilege. The athletes themselves suffer the costs of this system. Trained to measure themsel ves perpetually against the achievements of those around them, many young athletes de velop a sense of what sociologist Walter Schafer has terme d ―conditional self-worth‖. Th ey learn very quickly that they will be accepted by the important figures in their lives –parents, coaches and peers as long as they are perceived as ―winners‖. Unfortunately th ey become conceited and behave as if their athletic success will last forever.1. In paragraph 1, we know that when Americans read the sports pages they _____ _.A) are able to get information about sports gamesB) know more about athletes’private livesC) are like reading police reports.D) are surprised to find that their heroes are committing various crimes.2. The author suggests that people want athletes to be heroes because ______.A) athletes don’t display a vital and indomitable spiritB) athletes stand for successC) in sports we can see a certain kind of greatnessD) all athletes are courageous and noble3. The author argues that __________.A) the qualities a society seeks in its heroes are precisely the ones needed to trans form a talented child into a great athleteB) the qualities that make a successful athlete don’tnecessarily make a great perso nC) our society has created an effective system to transform athletes into heroesD) our society is responsible for reinforcing the qualities of great athletes4. By saying that young athletes develop a sense of ―conditional self-worth‖(paragra ph 4), the author means that _______.A) they are valued by others as long as they winB) young athletes are easily accepted by their parents, coaches and peersC) young athletes are always perceived as winnersD) young athletes lack the sense of self-worthPassage IIQuestions 5 to 8 are based on the following passage:On average, American kids ages 3 to 12 spent 29 hours a week in school, eight h ours more than they did in 1981. They also did more household work and participated i n more of such organized activities as soccer and ballet. Involvement in sports, in partic ular, rose almost 50% from 1981 to 1997: boy now spend an average of four hours a w eek playing sports; girls log half that time. All in all, however, children’s leisure time dro pped from 40% of the day in 1981 to 25%.―Children are affected by the same time crunch(危机)that affects their parents,‖says Sandra Hofferth, who headed the recent study of children’s timetable. A chief reason, s he sa ys, is that more mothers are working outside the home. (Nevertheless, children in both double-income and ―make breadwinner‖households spent comparable amounts of ti me interacting with their parents, 19 hours and 22 hours respectively. In contrast, childre n spent only 9 hours with their single mother.) All work and no play could make for some very messed-up kids. ―Play is the most powerful way a child explores the world and learns about himself,‖says T. Berry Brazelt on, professor at Harvard Medical School. Unstructured play encourages independent thin king and allows the young to negotiate their relationships with their peers, but kids ages 3 to 12 spend only 12 hours a week engaged in it.The children sampled spent a quarter of their rapidly decreasing ―free time‖watchin g television. But that, believe it or not, was one of the findings parents might regard as good news. If they’re spending less time in front of the TV set, however, kids aren’t rep lacing it with reading. Despite efforts to get kids more interested in books, the children s pent just over an hour a week reading. Let’s face it, who’s got the time?5. According to the author, the reason given by Sandra Hofferth for the time crunch is _______..A) quite convincing C) partially trueB) rather confusing D) totally groudless6. According to the author a child develops better if _______.A) he has plenty of time reading and studyingB) he is left to play with his peers in his own wayC) he has more time participating in school activitiesD) he is free to interact with his working parents7. The author is concerned about the fact that American kids ______.A) are engaged in more and more structured activitiesB) are increasingly neglected by their working mothersC) are spending more and more time watching TVD) are involved less and less in household work8. We can infer from the passage that ______.A) extracurricular activities promote children’s intelligenceB) most children will turn to reading with TV sets switched offC) efforts to get kids interested in reading have been fruitfulD) most parents believe reading to be beneficial to childrenPassage IIIQuestions 9 to 12 are based on the following passage:There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in sp elling. No school I have taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. There are, however, vastly different ideas about how to teach it, or how much priority it must be given over general language development and writing ability. T he problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely and confidently in writ ing without holding him back with the complexities of spelling? If spelling becomes the only focal point of his teacher’s interest, clearly a bright chil d wi ll be likely to ―play safe‖. He will tend to write only words within his spelling range, choosing to avoid adventurous language. That’s why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about a personal experience: ―This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling errors and yo ur writing is illegible.‖It may have been a sharp criticism of the pupil’s technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad reflection on the teacher who had omitted to read the essay, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child’s deep feelings. The teac her was not wrong to drawattention to the error, but if his priorities had centered on th e child’s ideas, an expression his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more motivation to seek improvement.9. Teachers differ in their opinions about _____.A) the difficulties in teaching spellingB) the role of spelling in general language developmentC) the complexities of the basic writing skillsD) the necessity of teaching spelling10. The expression ―play safe‖probably means _____.A) to write carefullyB) to do as teachers sayC) to use dictionaries frequentlyD)to avoid using words one is not sure of11. Teachers encourage the use of dictionaries so that _____.A) students will be able to express their ideas more freelyB) teachers will have less trouble in correcting mistakesC) students will have more confidence in writingD) students will learn to be independent of teachers12. The major point discussed in the passage is ______.A) the importance of developing writing skillsB) the complexities of spellingC) the correct way making compositionsD) the relationship between spelling and the content of a compositionPassage IVQuestions 13 to 15 are based on the following passage:Humanity’s primal efforts to systematize the concepts of size, shape, and number a re usually regarded as the earliest mathematics. However, the concept of number and th e countingprocess developed so long before the time of recorded history ( there is arch aeological evidence that counting was employed by humans as far back as 50,000 years ago) that the manner of this development is largely conjectural. Imagining how it proba bly came about is not difficult. The argument that humans, even in prehistoric times, had some number sense, at least to the extent of recognizing the concepts of more and les s when some objects were added to or taken away from a small group, seems fair, forstudies have shown that some animals possess such a sense. Such an imagined developm ent is supported by reports of anthropologists in their studies of present-day societies tha t are thought to be similar to those of early humans.13. What does the passage mainly discuss?___A) The efforts of early humans to care for herds of animals.B) The development of writing.C) The beginnings of mathematics.D) Similarities in number sense between humans and animals.14. The word ―conjectural‖in line 4 is closest in meaning to ___.A. complexB. based on guessingC. unbelievableD. supported by careful research15. What is the basic principle of the tally method described in the second paragrap h?A) The count is recorded permanently.B) Calculations provide the total count.C) Large quantities are represented by symbols.D) Each marker represents a single object.Part III Vocabulary and Structure (20%)Directions: There are 30 incomplete sentences in this part. Where There Is a Will There Is a Way
One of the most important things to succcss is a firm.reso1ution. A great man is al ways one who has a firm resolution and an inflexible spirit. One will never succeed all his life without a firm will to ge t the final victory.
As a rule, great tasks are accomplished by men of strong will. For example, Dr. Sun Yatsen set the Cbinese people free from the rule of the Qing Dynasty through a long pcriod of hard struggle. Many of his attempts failed and many of bis followers were killed, but he ha d an inflexible spirit and sticked to his cause. Finally, he made the revo lution of 1911 a success.
A student who has no resolution will never succeed in his studie s. The same is true of men in all walks of life. We must have a firm resolution first, if we wish to succeed. We must always remember thc old saying that where there is a will there is a way。
