大学英语视听说2unit 8听力原文
Unit8Ⅰ.Lead in1.There is no definite answer to this question. Different cultures often require differentapproaches. In Western schools, especially in America, students often like to deal with bullying by themselves. As children, they may not want to talk it over with a teacher if they are bullied, for they do not like to be considered a tattletale or a chicken. In Asian countries, people seem to place more value on collectivism. Against this background, it is not surprising that when a pupil is bullied by a big guy, he may consider the class as a collective to depend on and thus tell the teacher in charge of the class all about it. However, in the context of the quickening globalization process, many Chinese students are beginning to choose to deal with problems on their own..2.To prevent burglaries, we must, first of all, lock doors and windows before going to bed. Butthis is often not enough. Many people are beginning to use iron doors and steel bars outside their windows; some people even install an alarm to scare off a possible burglar. If the alarm system is linked with the police, they can come to your rescue quickly. If the whole family goes on vacation, you should arrange for someone to pick up mails and newspapers delivered to your door. A heavy pile of mail suggests an empty house and is like a beacon for burglars.3.I don't think the death penalty can prevent crime altogether. Capital punishment has beenaround for thousands of years, but crime has never been stopped. Some people commit crimes because of their psychological problems. Others may weigh the material benefits against the risks involved, and thus decide to go ahead in spite of the risks. If potential criminals know a certain crime will cost them their heads, some of them may stop, but some others may commit more serious crimes to avoid getting caught. Thus, the security situation could get worse.4.Many factors contribute to crime, such as poverty, the gap between the rich and the poor, lackof education, emotional outbreaks and loose law enforcement. If one suddenly gets angry, he may lose control over himself and injure or even kill people. Uneducated people may not know what punishments there are and go ahead boldly and foolishly. But lack of education is often linked with a lack of money. Poor people may feel miserable, and ill-feelings breed crime. Clearly, the widening gap between the rich and the poor plays a significant role in crime levels. If people feel resentful and there is no law to stop them from going to extremes, they may vent their anger by committing crimes. Such people need a strong government and strict law enforcement to help them think twice before they leap. To conclude, the gap between the rich and the poor and loose law enforcement may be especially important causes of crime.Ⅱ.Listening SkillsIt’s the same with the book.Ⅲ.Listening InTask1.Robbing the Left ShoeGirl: Yes, I'd like to report a mugging.Police Officer: Okay. Can you tell me exactly what happened?Girl: Well, I was walking home from work when this woman knocked me right off my feet, seized my stuff, and ran off. I was so scared that I didn't go after her.Police Officer: Can you describe the woman for me?Girl: Yeah. He is quite tall, about six foot three.Police Officer: Wait. You said a woman robbed you.Girl: Well, I'm not really sure. [Hmm.] You see, the person was wearing a white dress, a light red sweater over it, and she or he was wearing a pair of basketball shoes.Police Officer: [Hmm.] What else can you remember?Girl: Well, the person... had a beard.Police Officer: Ah! What was, uh, taken exactly?Girl: Well, just my left shoe. Strange, isn't it?Police Officer: Ah. The "Bearded Woman" has struck again!Girl: The "Bearded Woman"?Police Officer: Well, this "Bearded Woman" is a man. He dresses up like a woman and, for some unknown reasons, likes to take the left shoe from his victims. He's really harmless andusually returns the shoe to the crime scene a couple of days later.Girl: Hey, he can keep my shoe, and I'll just take off my left shoe every time I walk through the park.Task2.SmugglingA young man comes up to the border on his bicycle. He has two large bags over his shoulders. The border guard stops him and says, "What's in the bags?""Sand," answers the young man.The guard is a bit suspicious and asks the young man to open the bags for inspection. The guard empties the bags, but finds nothing in them but sand. Then he has the sand analyzed, only to discover that there is nothing but pure sand in the bags. So the young man is allowed to ride across the border with his sandbags.A week later, the same young man presents himself at the border with his bags. The guard asks, "What have you got?""Sand," says the young man.The guard does his thorough examination and discovers that the bags contain nothing but sand. He gives the sand back to the young man who then rides across the border on his bicycle with the sandbags. This happens every week for three years. Finally, the young man no longer appears at the border crossing. Many months go by and the border guard meets the young man in an expensive café."Hey," says the guard, "for three years you were smuggling something through my crossing station. It's driving me crazy. Just between you and me, what were you smuggling?" The young man drinks his coffee and says, "Bicycles."Task3.Who's the murderer?A passing police car heard loud screams and responded immediately. When the police arrived at the scene, they found Pete's dead body in his backyard, with many knife wounds and blood everywhere. The officer immediately went to question the three neighbors that had been outside in the past thirty minutes.Blake Smith had just finished painting his porch when the officer came. A young, polite man, Blake wiped his hands on his clean jeans before shaking hands, and said, "I've been outside allmorning. Painting the porch ceiling took a long time. Pete lives two doors away. I really didn't see or hear anything," he added apologetically.Nelson Brown had been in his garden, right next door to the victim's yard. He said, "I was in and out of the house. Weeding." His hands were dirty. Then he added, "Inside, I was repairing a chair. It all must have happened when I was indoors. Sorry."Kenny Green's story seemed less believable. "I was on a ladder, washing my windows," the middle-aged man admitted. The officer could see that Kenny's yard overlooked the victim's. But Kenny claimed, "I never looked over into Pete's yard, nor did I hear anything."Now the officer believed that one of the guys was lying. Who was this man?Ⅳ.let’s talkTexas Police Arrest Oldest Bank RobberTexas police say they have arrested a 90-year-old man, Henry Robert, who is accused of robbing a bank, probably making him the oldest bank robber in U.S. history.Police said Robert, who was not armed, asked a teller to put money into a large envelope with the word "robbery" written on it. A witness took down the license number of his car, and he was arrested on a highway about 15 miles outside the city.If he is proved guilty, Robert will face from ten to twenty years in prison. He told police he needed the money, and he had a complaint against banks.Robert left a prison in Florida, where he was the oldest prisoner in the state, about a year ago. Before that, he served a three-year sentence for a bank robbery in Florida in 1999.In a prison interview with a journalist, Robert said he had been a businessman in Texas but had fallen on hard times. He said he robbed his first bank when he was about 80 because he wanted to revenge against banks."A bank that I'd done business with had forced me into bankruptcy. I have never liked banks since," he told the journalist. "I decided I would get even. And I have."Ⅵ.further listening and speakingDescribing a RobberyDetective: Okay, Ms. Brown, just calm down. Could you start from the beginning and tell me what happened?Janet: Well, let's see. I was sitting at the table near the window when two men rushed in and told everyone to freeze.Detective: Can you describe the men?Janet: One was tall and with a long coat on. The other was shorter in a red jacket.Detective: After they burst in what did they do?Janet: Well, the tall one pointed his gun at the clerk and told him to open the cash register. The short one was watching the rest of us. The clerk hesitated a minute and just then the restaurant manager came out of his office. That surprised the thieves.Detective: Yeah, let's see.... The manager's name is Mr. Jackson. I guess he had the key to the safe?Janet: Yeah! That's right! Because the thieves told him to open the safe. The short one went with him. As the manager turned to go back to the office, he told the clerk to cooperate with them. Detective: Did the boss open up the safe?Janet: Yeah, he went back into the office and opened it. He seemed pretty calm, not like the customers. I think that guy deserves a medal or something.Sam: You all do. Living through a robbery is a tough experience. Two Concert TicketsAfter shopping for most of the day, a couple return to find their car has been stolen. They go to the police station to make a full report. Then, a police officer drives them back to the parking lot to see if any evidence can be found at the scene of the crime. To their surprise, the car has been returned. There is an envelope on the windshield with a note of apology and two tickets to a concert. The note reads, "I apologize for taking your car, but my wife was having a baby and I had to use your car to rush her to the hospital. Please forgive the inconvenience. Here are two tickets for tonight's concert."The couple feel relieved. After all, most human beings are kind, they think. They go to the concert and return home late. They find their house has been robbed. Valuable goods have been taken. And, there is a note on the door reading, "Well, you still have your car. I have to put my newly-born kid through college somehow, don't I?"Who Stole the Vase?Amy, the richest woman in town, threw a party. It was crowded and turned out to be a huge success, until about 12:00 a.m. That's when Amy noticed that her valuable vase was missing from the entry hall table. When the police chief arrived, he asked each visitor to make a statement. Phillip McDonald stepped forward, saying, "I was one of the first to arrive, about the same time as Julie Becker. I never once left the house. If people don't remember me, it's because I spent most of the time in a bedroom, watching a basketball game." The chief took down what Phillip's said, then told him he could go.Rod Bush was the next. He also claimed that he had never left the house, though he did step out onto a second story balcony, but it was so cold that he came back in immediately.Julie Becker was the third to make a statement. She also claimed never to have left or seen anything. "I spent much of the party moving from group to group and eating at the various food tables." The chief told her to leave, too, and watched as she went into the hall and took her coat from the top of a crowded coat rack. Now the chief started to suspect one of the three guests.。

But it seems to us that your price is much higher than other suppliers in china. We are currently doing business with some factories inShenzhen.Welsh: We know some factories give lower prices but their quality is poor. You see, the surface of our products is very smooth. And after the tour, you must have an idea how well ourmanufacturing environment meets international sanitarystandards.Considering the quality, our price is very reasonable. Welsh: We don’t deny that. But if you can give us a little discount, we can start up along-term relationship.Wang: You’re really tempting me. OK, what’s your quantity then?Generally, we’re not allowed to give discount at this price. But if your order is large enough, I can offer you a specialdiscount.Welsh: For the large plastic chair and the trolley, we can take 1000 pieces of each and much more later on after this trial order. Wang: 1000 pieces…Well, since it’s our initial transaction, I’ll give you a 10% discount on these two items.Welsh: 10%? Another company gives us a 15% discount for that size of order. You know, an incentive discount encourages the buyers andhelps expand your business.Wang: Of course, I know, but that is too high a rate.F rankly speaking, the maximum discount we can grant is10%.Welsh: Then about the food box and cup container? Also 10%?We would like to order 800 food boxes and 50cup containersto start.Wang: I’m afraid we can’t do that. You know, the price of the raw material has been risingsteadily. There’s no profit margin left at that price. Welsh: Come on, of course there is. By the way, we don’t need the scale on the cup container. How about reducing the price of the container to us$2 fromyour original us$3?Wang: Well, it’s really hard…Welsh: Well, we could meet each other half-way that would conclude the deal.Wang: You certainly have a way of talking me into it.Al right, let’s each make some concession. You increase thefood box order to 1000 pieces. OK?Welsh: Fine, no problem.Wang: You really drive a hard bargain! But we look forward to a long partnership.Video 2F: Hello, Mr. Leser. I’m very glad to meet you.L: Likewise. This is interesting. Do you think the color is right for the European market? And…what is the price for this wooden angel?F: No problem, you definitely have good taste. We have many European customers who are buying this Christmas range. The price is US$8, FOB Shanghai.L: US$8? Your price is much higher than the other offers we’ve received even just in this exhibition hall.F: Well, it may appear a little higher, but the quality of our products is much better than that of other suppliers’.You must take that into consideration.L: I agree with you. That’s why I’ve come to your booth. This time I intend to large order but business is almost impossible unless you can give me a discount.F: We can talk about that later. What’s your line of business?L: We mainly sell gifts and decorations for Christmas, Easter and other traditional holidays.Christmas is our largest concern. Our annual sales can reach us$10 million.F: Good, we've been a large producer of these items for years. You see, not only is our quality much better than others’. But our product range is more diverse. You can always find the best of anything you want.L: So, if you can give me the best price for this first order, we can start a long-term relationship. For example, what is the price for these Santa clauses?F: For the metal ones: US$20.the wooden ones: US$15.There are 8different styles and 3size for each type.L: If I choose several items of this kind, what’s the minimum order? F: 100 pieces for each item number and a minimum of 10 items. L: How about the discount? I can place an order for two containers to start.F: If so, we can grant you a very special discount of 8%.L: 8% I can hardly accept that as a special term according to the offers I’ve had today.I’d say 15% would be more like it. Some other companies have already promised us that.F: That really leaves us with nothing. Our maximum is 10%.You know, the price of these products tends to go up as wintercomes and there’s heavy demand for them.L: OK. I’ll make that concession for the sake of the beautiful color of your products.By the way, have you thought of choosing a commissioned sales representative or agent overseas you promote your sales?F: Yes, so far, we have several agents abroad but none in Germany. L: We’re willing to be your agent in Germany for Christmas gifts and decorations. What’s your usual commission rate?F: Usually, we gibe a commission of 4% to our agents.L: 4% is too low. You see. We’d have a lot of work to do in promoting sales, such as advertising on radio or TV, printing brochures and so on. It all costs.F: Don’t worry, we’ll allow you a higher commission rate if you sales are substantial.F: For example, if you sell US$2 million worth of gifts annually, we can allow 3% commission. But, if the annual turnover exceeds US$5 million, we can offer a 5% commission. What do you think of that?L: It sounds OK. We’d like to sign an agency agreement with you simultaneously when we sign the contract for this trial order.F: No problem. After you‘ve chosen the products, we’ll work them both out for you to sign.We can do it within 3days.Will that be suitable?L: Fine, one more question, when can you deliver the goods?F: 60days after the sales confirmation is signed.。

Unit 8 Receiving Visitors2.Listening PracticeTask 2-1A receptionist in a small firm may have to use a computer, operate a switchboard, and perform other clerical duties, in addition to receiving visitors. In a large firm a receptionist can concentrate on welcoming and looking after visitors.A visitor to a large firm should make an appointment, because executives are often very busy and do not have much time for visitors. Executives and secretaries should notify the receptionist in advance about important appointments, and about the movements of executives, especially when they are out of the building on business. Executives often ask receptionists to make travel arrangements for them, such as booking hotel rooms and airline tickets.Task 2-2There is a certain procedure for receiving visitors. A receptionist should find out if the visitor has an appointment or not. If the visitor is an important client, the executive or his secretary will come down to the reception area to greet the visitor. Sometimes the receptionist or another secretary escorts, or accompanies, the visitor to the executive’s office. Using the visitor’s name when he arrives is a friendly gesture and gives the visitor a good impression of the firm. The receptionist announces the visitor’s name, title and position, and introduces the executive to him. When a visitor’s request for a meeting cannot be satisfied, the receptionist should apologise and make some suggestions for an alternative time. If a meeting is impossible, the receptionist should express regret and explain why, with tact, so that the visitor’s feelings are not hurt.A receptionist should keep a register which includes dates, times, names and the firm the visitor works for. A receptionist can then refer to this if there is a request for information.4. Video 1(R for receptionist; S for secretary; V for visitor)R: Good morning. We really have to insist on that because we have a very strict timetable. It's essential for us to have it before the 30th, otherwise...H: Yes, of course, but let me explain the position.A: OK, go ahead, please.H: As you know, we had a disastrous hurricane here last month and part of our workshop was damaged. That halted production for 10days.A: Yes, you told me.H: So, eh, there's a backlog of orders to fill.A: I understand but...H: We're working at full capacity, but the earliest delivery date we can make is the last week in September. A: I'm afraid that's not good enough.H: Why not?A: The engines have to be installed after we receive them. That takes time.I do hope you'll appreciate our position, Harry. Can't you arrange delivery for September 20th?H: Mm! We can try but we can't guarantee it.A: If not the 20th, then when?H: We can guarantee September 25th.A: Why the 25th?H: That's the date the ship is scheduled to arrive. We can't make an earlier shipment because production won't be complete in time.A: Let me see, it'll take about a week for onward transport to the destination until the 5th of October.H: Yes, I'm sorry. But we must install absolutely on September 25th as the last possible date.H: Fair enough.A: All right, then. Let's make it the 25th of September. Oh, I'm terribly sorry. Something must have gone wrong.Let me check this on the computer...Er...Oh dear, yes, I'm afraid there's been a slip-up in our Shipping Department.I'm very sorry. It's certainly our fault.Mm...What would you like us to do about it?L: Well, we can keep this delivery and try to find another buyer for it. But of course, we'd need a price adjustment, say a 25% reduction on the lot. And we'd need a now delivery of A1 quality dispatched immediately.B: That sounds fair enough. Thank you. Two sisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at a kindergarten, and Dr. Patty Hill, the principal of the same school, wrote a song together for the children, entitled “Good Morning to All”. When Mildred combined her musical talents with her sister’s knowledge in the area of kindergarten education, ‘Good Morning to All”was sure to be a success. The sister published the song in a collection entitled “Song Stories of the Kindergarten”in 1893. Thirty-one years later, after Dr. Patty Hill became the head of the Department of Kindergarten Education at Columbia University’s Teachers College, a gentleman by the name Robert Coleman published the song, without the sisters’permission. He added a second part, which is the familiar “Happy Birthday to You”.Mr. Coleman’s addition of the second part made the song popular and, finally, the sisters” original first part disappeared. “Happy Birthday to You”had altogether replaced the sisters’original song “Good Morning to All”. And he wasn’t even the first. Elisha Gray transmitted music over a telephone line in 1876, which was the same year the telephone was invented. Gray invented the first electronic music instrument in 1874, calling it the “Musical Telegraph”. Alexander Graham Bell also designed an experimental “Electric Harp”for speech to be transmitted over a telephone line using technology similar to Gray’s. Bell was a speech teacher for the deaf. The boy has been the trailer and believes the film will be scary. The girl shares that view because of the writing on the wall in blood.Task 2: A Great ActorThere was once a great actor who could no longer remember his lines. After several years of searching, he finally found a theater that was willing to give him a try. The director said, “This is the most important part, and it has only one line. At the opening you walk onto stage carrying a rose. You hold the rose to your nose with just one finger and thumb, smell it deeply and then say the line on praise of the rose: ‘Ah, the sweet smell of my love.’” The actor was excited. All day long before the play he practiced his line over and over again. Finally, the time came. The curtain went up, the actor walked onto the stage, looked at the audience, and with great emotion said theline, “Ah, the sweet smell of my love.” The audience exploded in laughter. Only the director was furious! “Ahhhhhh! You damned fool!”he cried. “You’ve ruined my play! You’ve ruined me!”The actor was puzzled, “What happened? Did I forget my line?”“No!” shouted the director. “You forget the rose!”1.D2.C3.D4.A5.BTask 3: Movie ReviewsI love movies! And after I see them, I like to comment on them. These are movies I saw this year I would like to recommend: Among comedies I highly recommend “Monsoon Wedding”. It’s an Indian movie. The story is about an Indian wedding. Preparations for the wedding bring out funny and sad situations touching on love and a past rape. This movie shows some of the wonderful customs of India, and the importance of family and love. It’s great!Among dramas, I like “Adaptation”. It is an excellent movie! But for me the first part of the movie was too fast to follow. I hope to see it again on DVD with captions.“The Pianist” is set in the Second World War. It’s about a young Polish-Jewish pianist, who lives in Warsaw with his family. The Nazis sent his family to die in the concentration camps. He was safe, but would have died without unusually good luck and the kindness of a few non-Jews. This is a powerful movie with thought-provoking themes.“Rabbit-Proof Fence” is set in the 1930s in Australia, and it’s based on real events. It is about three native girls who are separated from their families by the racist police who send them to special centers. There the girls are taught practical skills, and the government tries to integrate them into white Australian society. They can away from the camp and walked 1,500 miles to find their mothers. This is a sad, touching story that you should not miss.1.He likes to see movies and comment on them.2.Four.3.Three.4.One.IV. The murder in The Lion King was almost the same as the murder in the Shakespearean play Hamlet.Model 3 The plot is first-class.John: It’s kind of cool that they still used the same Star Wars theme song for this movie. Laura: Yeah! It just reminds me of the previous Star Wars scenes.John: I know exactly what you mean! Hearing that song makes me think of the past.Laura: I think the plot was first-class. But I don’t think the character development was that strong.John: Do you think that has anything to do with the casting of the movie?Laura: No, the casting was great; the actors are excellent, but I think the acting was a little weak. They just didn’t have a lot of funny or meaningful lines.John: Well, maybe, but I liked the little kid that played “Skywalker”. I can’t imagine anyone else playing that part.Laura: Yeah, I liked him too. He’s soooo cute! Now Your TurnSAMPLE DIALOGA: What do you think about the movie?B: I think the plot was first-class. But I don’t think the character development was so strong.A: Yes, the characterization was rather weak. Do you think it is because of the casting of the movie?B: No, the cast was strong. But the acting was rather poor. And the lines are not interesting at all. A: Well, maybe. But I liked the heroine of the movie. She is excellent.B: Yeah, I liked her too. She’s adorable!V. Let’s TalkAlfred HitchcockAlfred Hitchcock was a British director. His movies frequently show innocent people caught up in situations beyond their control or even understanding.Hitchcock preferred the use of suspense in his movies. In surprise, the director provides the viewer with frightening things. In suspense, the director tells or shows things to the audience which the characters in the movie do not know, and then skillfully builds up tension around what will happen when the characters finally learn the truth. Hitchcock had a great sense of humor. Once at a French airport, a suspicious customs official looked at Hitchcock’s passport, which was marked simply PRODUCER. The curious official asked, “And what do you produce?”“Gooseflesh.”replied Hitchcock.Alfred Hitchcock always managed to make a brief appearance in his movies: He was sometimes getting on a bus, or crossing a street, pr walking in front of a store, or across the courtyard in an apartment. However, for the movie Lifeboat in 1944, he was faced with a difficult problem. The entire movie was set in a lifeboat out at sea, and there were only a few characters in the boat. Originally, he wanted to float by as a dead body, but he was afraid he’d sink! His clever solution was to place a photograph of himself in a newspaper that one of the characters read during the course of the movie.1. A2.C3.DVI. Furthering Listening and Speaking ListeningTask 1: Only One LinePeter has always wanted to be an actor, but never succeeded because he had a hard time memorizing lines. A friend of his told him about a small part in a play. He promised Peter that he could do it because he’s only have to remember one line. Peter decided to take the part. His only line was, “Listen, I hear the guns roar!” Peter practiced and practiced, “Listen, I hear the guns roar!” On the opening night of the play Peter was very nervous. Backstage, he practiced his line, over and over again, “Listen, I hear the guns roar! Listen, I hear the guns roar!” Finally came his turn, Peter went onto stage. RowlingQ: How did you get the idea for Harry Potter?A: I was traveling on a train between Manchester and London and the idea for Harry just fell into my head. At that point it was essentially the idea for a body who didn’t know he was a wizard. Q: Did you always plan to write Harry’s story in more than one book? If so, how many?A: I always conceived it as a seven-book series because I decided that it would take seven years, from age eleven to seventeen, inclusive, to train as a wizard, and each of the books would deal with one year of Harry’s life at the school.Q: Any clues about the next book?A: I don’t want to i\give anything away, but I tell you that the books are getting darker. Harry’s going to have quite a bit to deal with as he gets older. Sorry if they get too scary!Q: Of the many things you must have heard people say about Harry Potter, what are some of your favorites?A: My very favorite was from a twelve-year-old Scottish girl who came to hear me read at the Edinburgh book festival. At the end of the festival, the queue for signing was very long. When the girl finally reached me, she said, “I didn’t WANT there to be so many people here, because this is MY books!” That is exactly how I feel about my favorite books. The sound effect is muchbetter.Interviewer: What about you, Richard?Richard: Just the opposite. It’s more comfortable to sit at home.Interviewer: There’re many different movie genres, for example, science fiction, action, comedy, romance. When you get to the part where I’m expected to promise to ‘love, respect and obey her,’‘giving up all others,’ and ‘be true to her forever,’ I’d be happy if you’d just leave that part out.” He gave the minister the cash and walked away with a light heart. The wedding day arrived, and the bride and groom reached that part of the ceremony where they would make vows to each other. When it was time for the groom’s vows, the minister looked the young man in the eye and said, “Will you promise to kneel before her, obey her every command and wish, serve her breakfast in bed every morning of your life and make a vow before God and your lovely wife that you will never even look at another woman, as long as you both shall live?”The groom was shocked, but in spite of himself, he said in a low voice, “Yes, I will.” Then the groom whispered to the minister, “I thought we had a deal.” The minister put the $100 into his hand and whispered back, “She made me a much better offer.”1.F2.F3.T4.T5.FTask 3: Long Distance FriendshipsAmerican weddings are not always the same. I’d like to show you pictures of my wedding. When we got engaged, an announcement was published in the newspaper. The announcement typically includes the names of the bride, the bridegroom and their parents and the wedding is expected to be held. About a month before the wedding, we sent out wedding invitations to relatives and friends. This is the church where we had the wedding. My father gave me to my future husband. Then the minister started the wedding ceremony. He greeted the guests, and talked about the meaning of marriage. Next, we exchanged vows and gave each other rings. This is the main part of the wedding. After the vows, the minister prayed for us. Then the minister declared us husband and wife, and we kissed each other. Here is my sister, who was a bridesmaid. This is the bouquet I carried. Traditionally, the unmarried women gather after the wedding, and the bride throws her bouquet to them. The one who catches it will, according to tradition, be the next one to get。

Listening skillsScriptTo keep our children safe from dangerous criminals, these tips might be helpful. First, children should be encouraged always to ask permission from their caregivers before they go anywhere. They should not only tell the caregivers where they will be at all times, but also who will be looking after them. Also, children should never walk or ride their bikes alone. Instead, they shouldtravel in groups whenever possible. More importantly, children should be taught to stay away from strangers, though they may offer to show them a puppy or give them candy. Children should be taught to say "no" and run, scream, or fight if necessary. Moreover, children should be told that no problem is too big or too small to ask grown-ups. In fact, it is never too late to ask for help, and to keep asking until they get the help they need. Last but not least, we should realize that many child-attack cases involve a family member or family friend, for example, a stepfather, sister's boyfriend, babysitter, neighbor, and so on.1)First2)not only3)but also4)Also5)Instead6)More importantly7)though8)Moreover9)In fact10)Last but not least11)for exampleListening inTask 1ScriptGirl:Yes, I'd like to report a mugging.Policeofficer:OK. After all, you don't want someone else to ruin your good credit rating and perhaps keep you from getting the loan you want to get.The first thing you want to do is to watch how much information you give out on the Internet. For example, never put your credit card number into an email. If you do make purchases online, you need tobe careful. One way to be extra careful is to only use sites that offer a high level of encryption. Another way to be extra careful is to only use one credit card for all of your Internet purchases. Make sure that credit card has a low limit.Another thing you have to do to help you avoid ID theft is to destroy all your outgoing mail completely. Some thieves will pick up garbage, search through it, and pull out the credit card offers that you threw away because they were junk mail. Remember that a lot of your information is already there. All a thief has to do is forge your signature and mail the form back with a note that says you've changed your mailing address (to their address). The third way to avoid identity theft is to make sure that your mailbox is safe. Have a slot in your front door for the mail to fall through. Even though that is not completely safe, it is still much safer than the post box outside your front door.Correct answer(1) give out(2) number(3) online(4) sites(5) credit card(6) low(7) outgoing(8) thieves(9) offers(10) mailbox(11) front doorLet's talkTask 1ScriptTexas police say they have arrested a 91-year-old man, J. Also, the theft of personal records canbe an inside job, where employees who have access to computer systems are tempted to steal large volumes of customer personaldata records. This temptation can be real, because stolen personal data can sell anywhere from $10 to $60 per record.Identity theft could be happening to you right now and youwouldn't know it until the damage was done. Even more disturbingis that newborns and the elderly are often the favorite victims of identity thieves, because the abuse of their personal informationcan go on longer before it is found out.Today, the theft of personal records is more dangerous than theloss of personal information through the careless discarding ofcredit card receipts or mail.FTTFF。

Video 1D: It's good that we've settled on the questions of price, quality, quantity and packing.Shall we discuss the terms of payment now?L: Good idea. Let's get down to business.Since this is our order in this field, we would like a lump sum payment. It saves time for both of us.D: Lump sum advance payment? You mean we make all the payment before the goods are delivered?I don't think that's international practice.Besides, it's a bit demanding for such a large trial order.L: That's our usual way when starting a now business relationship. What terms do you suggest?D: I wonder if you can accept payment by installments. You know, our goods will also be delivered in partial shipment. L: What do you mean exactly?D: I think the payment can be divided into two installments.70% of the total can be paid at first delivery and the other 30% after final acceptance.L: Well, I see your point. But normally we conduct our international sales with an L/C. Butyou rejected that possibility.Actually, an L/C provides us with guaranteed payment from the bank. How about cash on delivery?D: That sounds reasonable. But as our order is quite substantial this time, cash on delivery will put us in a very difficult position with backward cash flow. Maybe we can make an advance payment to show you our sincerity.L: How much do you have in mind?D: What about 25% of the total? In that case, we'd pay 25% in advance and pay 75% on final acceptance.L: Ok. You drive a hard bargain!I'll accept your last proposal, but my pany requires the final 75% payment to be paid within one month of the final delivery.Do you think that bill be ok for you?D: That's all right with us. And you can rest assured it will all go through ok.You know, we have an excellent reputation all over the world and we're the fourth largest European pany in this line of business. L: Great. On our side, we'll ensure prompt shipment so as to be sure your products get to the market in your area quickly.D: I appreciate your cooperation. I can envisage a sustainable and long-term relationship ahead. We can promise there will be no problem with the payment. But I hope you can offer us more favorable conditions for later transactions.L: Of course. If these translations prove successful and satisfactory, we can discuss many things later on. Right?D: Yes. Then let's call it deal.L: Yes, and now let's go and celebrate.Video 2Ada: Good morning. Did you save this document?Alex: I think I saved the information on my puter.Ok, what do you need?Ada: This is very kind of you.First, could you please read the first part of the letter so that I can make out some of the missing information?Alex: Ok. "we have been requested by the Sun Bank, Sunlight City,Australia to advise that they have opened with us their irrevocable documentary credit number SB-87654 for account of DEF Imports, 7 Sunshine Street, Sunlight City, Australia in your favour for the amount of not exceeding fifty thousand U.S.Dollars <US$50000> available by your draft<s> drawn on us at sight for full invoice value." got it?Ada: Yes, most of it. Now this is of vital importance. You know, we've done business with that Australian pany many times. But this time the order is NO.DEF-101 dated January 10, 2006 for 100 sets "ABC" brand pneumatic tools, 1/2" drive plete with hose and quick couplings. So, you should write that below, under "Purchase Order No."here and "Covering" here.Ada: Right, NO.DEF dash 101...and pneumatic tools.,1/2 drive plete with hose and quick couplings.Ada: Good, you've got is! Can you make out the documents theylisted to check if they ply with our requirements?Your manager is fussy about this.Ada: Lucky that some of the information here is still clear. For No.2, how many copies of the packing lists should there be?Alex: Five. Our customers normally want five copies of the mercial invoice and packing list from us.Ada: I see. And here No.3.Full set of 3/3 clean on board ocean bill of lading, and how many non-negotiable copies?Alex: Two.Ada: And freight prepaid, or freight to collect?Alex: Freight prepaid.Ada: Ok. I guess everything is clear for this part now. Let's trace the following items.About shipment, we won't deliver the goods in several consecutive batches, right?Ale x: No, partial shipment is prohibited but transshipment is allowed.Ada: Oh, yes. Here are some special conditions on us.Ada: First, all documents should indicate the import license NO.IP/79370 dated January 18,2006 and all charge outside Australia will be on our side.Ada: IP forward dash 79370.And charges outside Australia are on the beneficiary's account. Good. And I can read here that all the documents should be presented within 15 days after shipment.Alex: Yes, 15days is a very important message.Besides, the drafts will be marked with "drawn under documentary credit No.SB-87654 at the Sun Bank, Sunlight City, Australia dated January 26, 2006".Ada: Fine, I'll type this after I get back to my office. The rest of the letter is fairly clear.Thank you so much for your patience and help.It wasn't a good start to the day and without your help it would not have gotten better.Thank you!Alex: You're wele.Ada: Thanks again.
