APersonal Time Off(PTO)is something my wife and I created after having kids. We learned that, over time,a full life can leave little time for personal rest and for reflection, hanging out with friends,or just being“off. ”So,after a number of years,we make a change. If I can persuade you to take your own PTO,then these might help.■Schedule itFirst of all,one of our favorite family sayings is“schedule it. ”Sounds easy enough, but life gets complicated managing full-time work and full-time family. Put yourPTO time on the calendar and you make it a real thing.■Be flexible and strictIf you can schedule PTO at the same time each week, then all the better. Because our calendar can get rather full, flexibility in scheduling becomes a necessity. But being strict in actually taking the time each week is more important. Skipping it once makes it easier to skip again.■Take enough timeMy typical PTO lasts a couple of hours or longer. Sometimes it might be half the day depending on what I’m doing. The goal is to spend enough time away to1et your shoulders drop.■Do what you want to doRemember,PTO time is about personal time to do what you want to do,not what you have to do. PTO time is about relaxation. Grab a friend and get a beer. Work can wait until tomorrow.1.What can be the first step to take the PTO?A.Persuade the family.B.Have a personal rest.C.Ask friends for advice.D.Make a time plan.2.What does the underlined part“let your shoulders drop”probably mean?A.Get you more focused.B.Have you feel relaxed.C.Shake your shoulders often.D.Make you feel more stressed.3.What does the text mainly talk about?A.Tips on how to take your time offB.Skills to manage work and familyC.Advice on how to free yourselfD.Ways of scheduling your workBScientists say baby sharks are at risk of being born smaller and without the energy they need to survive because of warming oceans from climate change.Scientists studied epaulette sharks, which live off Australia and New Guinea. They found that warmer conditions sped up the sharks’ growing process. That meant the sharks were born earlier and very tired. The findings could be used in the study of other sharks, including those that give birth to live young. The scientists studied 27 sharks. Some were raised in average summer water temperatures, about 27 degrees Celsius. Others were raised in higher temperatures around 29 degrees Celsius and 31 degrees Celsius. They found that the sharks raised in the warmest temperatures weighed much less than those raised in average temperatures. They also showed reduced energy levels.Epaulette sharks can grow to a length of about one meter. Their name comes from large spots on their bodies that look like decorations on some military clothing. One study this year found that worldwide numbers of oceanie sharks and rays dropped more than 70 percent between 1970 and 2018. Overfishing is a main concern, while climate change and pollution also threaten shark.Carolyn Wheeler is a doctoral student at the University of Massachusetts Boston and with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University in Australia. She was the lead author of the epaulette shark study. She said that while all the sharks survived, those raised in warmer temperatures were not strong enough to survive for long in the wild. She added that if the sharks are born smaller than usual “they are probably going to have to start looking for food sooner—and they’re going to have less time to adjust to their surroundings.” The study should serve as a warning to ocean governing agencies that careful management is needed to prevent the loss of more sharks.4. In what aspect do the warmer conditions affect the baby sharks?A. Their food.B. Their body weight.C. Their living habits.D. Their moving route.5. How did the scientists carry out their study?A. By studying former data.B. By tracking sharks in the wild.C. By collecting information about climate change.D. By comparing sharks in waters of different temperatures6. She answered softly, “I suppose.”Now, Susie was at the foot of the tree. She started to make the long reach. Then I found Susie was becoming nervous with every step. I realized she would not go much further.Susie was halfway up. Then she stopped and held the tree tight, looking very afraid. Her eyes were closed. With her face against the tree, she cried, “I can't.”The other girls sat in silence. I talked quietly to Susie, trying to relax her. I talked for a long time till I ran out of words.“I will still be your friend no matter what, Susie!” Mary broke the silence. To my surprise, Susie lifted her head and looked up to the wire. Then she turned to look down at Mary and smiled. Mary smiled back. Finally, Susie made it all the way across that wire. When she returned to the ground, the first hug she looked for was from Mary. We all cheered. Moments like this keep me doing what I do.8. Why did Susie stop halfway up to the wire?A. It was too high for her to reach.B. She was too afraid to move on.C. Many of the essays had obvious red flags for AI generation: outdated facts, quotes from prior university presidents presented as current presidents, fictional professors and named student organizations that don’t exist. At the same time, the students reported that using AI required far more time than simply writing their essays the old-fashioned way would have. There has been a fair amount written about the supposed impressiveness of AI-generated text. There are even several high-profile AI-written articles, essays or even scientific papers or screenplays that showcase this impressiveness. In many of these cases, the “authors” have access to higher-quality language models than most students are currently able to use. But, more importantly, the published examples are generally the polished form of professional writers and editors. In contrast, many of my students’ AI-generated essays showed the common problems of student writing—uncertainty about the appropriate writing style, issues with organization and transitions, and inconsistent paragraphing. Obviously, producing a quality essay with AI requires having high writing skill and revising skill to produce appropriate outputs. My experimental so tells me that a good assignment sheet is the best defense against AI essays. If your assignment is “Describe the reasons for the U.S. Civil War”, you are more likely to get AI or downloaded essay submissions. The features most commonly used to identify people are faces, voices and fingerprints. But the way they walk is also a giveaway.Researchers have used video cameras and computers to analyze people's gaits, and are now quite good at it. But translating such knowledge into a practical identification system can be tricky. Cameras are often visible, are difficult to set up, require good lighting and may have their view blocked by other people. A team led by Dr. Ozanyan and Dr. Scully have been looking for a better way to recognize gait. Their answer: pressure-sensitive mats.Such mats are nothing new. They have been part of security systems. But Ozanyan and Scully use a complicated version that can record the amount of pressure applied in different places as someone walks across it. These measurements form a pattern unique to the walker. The researchers turned to an artificial-intelligence system to recognize such patterns, and it seemed to work. In a study in 2018, they tested the system on a database of footsteps of 127 people. They found its error rate in identifying who was who was a mere 0.7%. And Scully says even without a database of footsteps to work with, the system can determine someone's sex and, with reasonable accuracy, a subject's age.One application of the mat-based gait-recognition system might be in health care, particularly for the elderly. A mat placed in a nursing home or an old person's own residence could monitor changes in an individual's gait that indicates certain illnesses. That would provide early warning of someone being at greater risk of falling over.Gait analysis might also be used as a security measure in the workplace, monitoring access to restricted areas, such as parts of military bases, server farms or laboratories dealing with dangerous materials.Perhaps the most interesting use of the mats, though, would be in public places, such as airports. For that to work, the footsteps of those to be recognized would need to have been stored in a database, which would be harder to arrange than the collection of photographs and fingerprints that existing airport security systems rely on. Many aircrew or preregistered frequent flyers would welcome any thing that speeded up one of the most tiresome parts of modern travel.8.What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 2?A. Research equipment.B. Research findings.C. Research assumption.D. Research background.9.According to Paragraph 3, the mat is used to ________.A. collect dataB. ensure safetyC. determine ageD. analyse pressure10.The gait-recognition system might be applied to ________.A. monitor security work progressB. detect potential health problemsC. keep track of travelling frequencyD. warn passengers of possible dangers11.The main purpose of the passage is to ________.A. compare and educateB. examine and assessC. discuss and persuadeD. explain and informDOvertourism:A growing global problem The summer holidays are in full swing-and protests against overtourism have begun in a number of popular European cities.Barcelona,in particular,is at the centre of these mounting concerns about the rapid growth of tourism in cities, especially during peak holiday periods. In fact, there were 30 million overnight visitors in 2017,compared to a resident population of 1,625,137 in Barcelona. While many tourists want to "live like a local" during their visits, the residents of many tourism-dependent destinations are seeing the unique sense of place that characterised their home towns vanish beneath a wave of souvenir shops, crowds, tour buses and noisy bars.Overtourism is harming the landscape, damaging beaches, and pricing residents out of the housing market. It is a hugely complex issue that is often oversimplified. It can have an impact in multiple ways. The international cruise(游轮)industry, for example, delivers thousands of passengers daily to destination ports. While comparatively little is returned to communities, cruise activity creates physical and visual pollution.City residents also bear the cost of tourism growth. As cities transform to offer service to tourists, the global travel supply chain advances. This goes with increasing property speculation(房产投机)and rising costs of living for local communities.Airbnb, for example, has been accused of reducing housing affordability and displacing residents. In addition, overcrowding and the establishment of typical tourism-focused businesses, such as clubs, bars and souvenir shops, overpower local businesses-and noisy and unmanageable tourist behaviour is common. This weakens the uniqueness of destinations and leads to crowd and waste management pressures.Clearly, tourism brings jobs, investment and economic benefits to destinations. But overtourism occurs when tourism expansion fails to acknowledge that there are limits.Local government and planning authorities have so far been powerless to deal with the irresistible influence of the global tourism supply chain. This has led to widespread "tourist-phobia"-first described by Manuel Delgado more than a decade ago as a mixture of rejection, mistrust and disrespect for tourists.Dealing with overtourism must now be a priority.Managing the flow of tourists seems an improbable and unwelcome task. But some cities have taken extreme measures to limit the effects of overtourism, including the introduction of new or revised taxation arrangements, fines linked to new local laws, and "demarketing",whereby destinations focus on attracting fewer,high-spending and low impact tourists, rather than large groups.Overtourism is a shared responsibility.City administrators and destination managers must acknowledge that there are definite limits to growth.Putting the wellbeing of local residents above the needs of the global tourism supply chain is vital.Primary consideration must be given to ensuring that the level of visitation fits within a destination's capacity. We need to urgently rethink the way cities are evolving to uphold the rights of their residents.12.Why is Barcelona mentioned in Paragraph 1?______A. To describe how unique the city is.B. To warn people away from popular cities.C. To show how crowded a destination can be.D. To compare the number of visitors to that of locals.13.What is the problem of overtourism?______A. It has destroyed local businesses.B. It has led to higher living expenses.C. It has increased the unemployment rate.D. It has caused mistrust among local communities.14.The reason for overtourism is that ______ .A. destinations misjudge their capacityB. tourists lack a sense of responsibilityC. governments fail to support the supply chainD. tourists' travelling preference is oversimplified15.According to the writer, what should the local governments do?______A. Take full advantage of tourism.B. Guarantee local people's welfare.C. Advocate a ban on global tourism.D. Control tourism-related businesses.二、阅读七选五(本大题共5小题,共10.0分)A cultural view on personal space It's a well-known fact that the British prefer a large "bubble" of personal space around them.(1) And in South America,a friend may grab you by the arm during conversation to make their point. Now,a study published in the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology has looked into why different cultures have such different approaches to personal space.(2) They developed an earlier study that divided individuals into "contact" and "non-contact" cultures.Contact cultures-southern European,Latin American and Arabian-engaged in more touching and stood closer during conversation than non-contact cultures in northern Europe,North America and parts of Asia.To a degree, this proved correct.Argentina becomes known as the most touchy-feely nation;people here keep the same distance from a stranger as a British person would an acquaintance and a Canadian individual a close friend or partner.(3)______ They come out with the widest distance you should stand from a stranger-more than 1.3m-but one of the narrowest gaps for close friends, just 40cm,compared to nearly 60cm for a British person. So the theory of warm versus cold is not as straightforward as it sounds.(3) The higher a country's average temperature, the closer people will stand to a stranger. But older people in warm climates keep a bigger distance from close friends and stand closer to strangers;women generally keep a greater distance from someone they don't know. The academics leading this study admit that there is a lot more to do.But what we do know is to keep your distance in Canada;prepare for a hug in Argentina.(4) They like to stand closer than anybody. To keep warm,perhaps.A.It's important to get the distance right,though.B.Romanians clearly take longer to establish trust.C.How close we stand to other people varies widely between countries.D.And if you end up on good terms with a Norwegian, don't draw back.E.However,in India people will pack into trains and buses without a second thought.F.One theory the researchers wanted to test was whether climate affects personal space.G.The study certainly found that climate, age and gender have an effect on personal distance across cultures.16. But now, those who follow the technology know that it has got considerably better.Writing with your voice raises several interesting questions. How difficult is it actually? Human speech involves a lot more starting and stopping with errors and the need for repairing broken sentences than you may think. Even gifted speakers make mistakes. To turn the spoken word into reasonable writing requires lots of planning. You’ll need some kinds of notes or other organisers to make it work.Another question turning speech into writing raises is the style. How would writing make the change that people speak their writing rather than type? Chances are that it would come up with many more short sentences and more concrete language, which is good. It would probably also rely on prepared phrases a lot more often, which is not available when you are speaking quickly. To confirm this, a column was not written, but dictated (听写). It was composed from brief notes written down for structure only, and it was edited for length, with all of the original errors kept in. Here were the results. The first was that the literal accuracy was extremely high. There weren’t many cases wherethe software had heard one word incorrectly and written down another. But the other result was that the readability of this column was rather bad. Obviously, the blame is not with the technology at all, which turns out to be rather good. Speaking into writing relies on a better human brain than the one we currently possess. Writing is hard. There’s a reason it can’t be done at the speed of speech, in real time.To clarify the matter, this time paragraph breaks were added after the whole writing. Punctuations (标点) had to be spoken aloud, and after a full stop, the first word in the new sentence was capitalized automatically. Some minor punctuation marks were added to make it clearer. To improve accuracy, people “trained” the software beforehand, reading a prewritten passage aloud. Actually it turns out to be more effective. All of these ensure the satisfactory completion of turning speech into writing.Language is the most important tool for human interaction, and voice is one beautiful part of language. With the maturity of modern technology, it has given birth to a great change in the human-computer voice interaction.8. According to the passage, which helps to turn speech into writing in terms of style?A. There is careful planning in advance.B. Errors and broken sentences are avoided.C. People type words as fast as they say them.D. The writing contains more prepared phrases.9. To achieve better results, the author mentions some changes for ______.A. processing errors in a column.B. adding minor punctuation marks.C. increasing the number of brief notes.D. integrating short paragraphs in writing.10. The author suggests that ______.A. human brains are responsible for poor dictated writing.B. writing with voice promises to improve the quality of writing.C. writing is an unnatural act that can hardly be learned and improved.D. technology has a long way to go in the human-computer voice interaction.11. What is the passage mainly about?A. Why people fully intend to turn speech into writing.B. What role voice technology plays in improving readability.C. Where the human-computer voice interaction is at an advantage.D. How voice technology enables the change from speech into writing.DLosing your ability to think and remember is pretty frightening. We know the risk of dementia (痴呆症) increases with age. But if you have memory slips you probably needn’t worry. There are pretty clear differences between signs of dementia and age-related memory loss. After age 50, it’s quite common to have trouble remembering the namesof people, places and things quickly, says Dr. Kirk Daffner of Brigham and Women’s Hospital inBoston. The brain ages just like the rest of the body. Certain parts become smaller, especially areas in the brain that are important to learning, memory and planning. Changes in brain cells can affect communication between different regions of the brain. And blood flow can be reduced as blood vessels narrow.Forgetting the name of an actor in a favorite movie, for example, is nothing to worry about. But if you forgetthe plot of the movie or don’t remember even seeing it, that’s far more concerning, Daffner says. When you forget entire experiences, he says, that’s “a red flag that something more serious may be involved”. Forgetting how to operate a familiar object like a microwave oven, or forgetting how to drive to the house of a friend you’ve visited many times before can also be signs of something going wrongBut even then, Daffner says, people shouldn’t panic. There are many things that can cause confusion andmemory loss, including health problems like temporary stoppage of breathing during sleep, high blood pressure, or depression, as well as medications (药物) like antidepressants. You don’t have to figure this out on your own. Daffner suggests going to your doctor to check on medications, health problems and other issues that could be affecting memory. And the best defense against memory loss is to try to prevent it by building up your brain’s cognitive(认知的) reserve, Daffner says.“Read books, go to movies, take on new hobbies or activities that force one to think in novel ways, ” he says. In other words, keep your brain busy and working. And also get physically active, because exercise is a known brain booster12. Why does the author say that one needn’t be concerned about memory slips?A. Not all of them are related to one’s age.B. Not all of them are symptoms of dementia.C. They occur only among certain groups of people.D. They are quite common among fifty-year-old people.13. Which memory-related symptom should people take seriouslyA. Totally forgetting how to do one’s daily routines.B. Inability to recall details of one’s life experiencesC. Failure to remember the names of movies or actorsD. Occasionally confusing the addresses of one’s friends.14. What should people do when signs of serious memory loss show up?A. Check the brain’s cognitive reserve.B. Stop medications affecting memory.C. Turn to a professional for assistance.D. Exercise to improve their well-being15. What is Dr. Daffner’s advice forfight against memory loss?A. Having regular physical and mental checkups.B. Taking medicine that helps boost one’s brain.C. Engaging in known memory repair activities.D. Staying active both physically and mentally第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

However, my parents never said a word. They left the corner of the screen door pushed out, creating an opening, in the defense against unwanted insects. For years, every time I saw that corner of the screen, it would constantly make me think about my mistake. These salt crystals go into the cave walls, changing sizes as temperatures rise and fall. This process causes the rock to slowly break down.Salt crystals may become larger when exposed to repeated changes between wet conditions and periods of drought. These kinds of changes are expected to become more obvious as the climate continues to warm.In particular, the researchers say, climate change may cause more intense El Nino(厄尔尼诺)events in the future. These events can strengthen the kinds of conditions that help salt crystals form Scientists are still debating the exact influence of climate change on El Nino, a natural climate cycle that drives changing patterns of warming and cooling in thePacific Ocean. The new study, led by Jillian Huntley, examined 11 ancient cave art sites in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. In particular, AI is used in scenes where actor shave to produce certain stunts (特技)to develop setups in the studio artificially. VFX is used to later change the internal studio backgroundsto a different place in the movie. There are many movies with two characters of the same actor. When AI was not a part of the film, editors used different methods to show the two aspects of the same actor in one scene, but now AI is being used to form the second character of the same actor and is being performed to the viewers.By a perfect combination of animation, VFX and AI, realistic models are being created. Along the way they came to the edge of a severe hot-sand desert. They learnt that during the daytime the sun heats up the fine sand until it’s as h ot as charcoal, so no one can walk on it -- not even bullocks(小公牛) or camels! So the caravan leader hired a desert guide, one who could follow the stars, so they could travel only at night when the sand cools down. They began the dangerous night-time journey across the desert. A couple of nights later, after eating their evening meal, and waiting for the sand to cool, they started out again.Later that night, the desert guide, who was driving the first cart, saw from the stars that they were getting close to the other side of the desert. He had also overeaten, so that when he relaxed, he fell asleep. Then the bullocks who, of course, couldn’t tell directions by reading the stars, gradually turned to the side and went in a big wide circle until they ended up at the same place they had started from! By then it was morning, and the people realized they were back at the same spot. They lost heart and began to cry about their condition. Since the desert crossing was supposed to be over by now, they had no more water and were afraid they would die of thirst. They even began to blame the caravan leader and the desert guide. However, the leader himself didn’t lose courage. He began walking back and forth, trying to think out a plan. Remaining alert, out of the corner of his eye, he noticed a small clump of grass. He thought, "Without water, no plant could live in this desert." So he asked his fellow travelers to dig up the ground on that very spot. They dug and dug, and after a while they got down to a large stone. He got down into the hole, put his ear to the stone, and heard the sound of flowing water.A spring was found. All the people were overjoyed. They drank and bathed and washed the animals and cooked their food and ate. Before they left, they raised a high flag so that other travelers could see the new spring in the middle of the hot-sand desert. Then they continued on safely to the end of their journey.56. Why did the tradesman and his caravan have to travel during the night?A. To use less water while crossing the desert.B. It was too hot to walk on the desert in the daytime.C. They might be able to find the spring in the quiet night.D. The guide could find a short way by following the stars.57. Why did the group feel so desperate when they were back to the starting point?A. They were in danger of dying of thirst.B. They were running out of food.C. Their guide had lost the way.D. Their leader had lost heart.58. What is the moral of the story?A. Never give up too easily.B. Don’t mind what others think of you.C. Don’t forget sorrow follows extreme joy.D. Never refuse to offer help when you are needed.BOne man who sold tickets on the train from 1959 to 1965 Clive Codrington, pointed out that the tracks w hich passed through Knolly’s Tunnel and the area of Tabaquite were not originally intended for passenger trains. “They were really used for the transport of cocoa and coffee,” he said.Construction on Knolly’s Tunnel began in 1896, and it was opened on Au gust 13th,1898 by the man it was named after---Sir Clement C. Knolly, Acting Governor of Trinidad. It linked Rio Claro with Port of Spain. Its architecture is still admired and studied today, and many are amazed that Knolly’s Tunnel has stood up to the earth’s movement over so many years. Much research is being done on the tunnel. At the top of Knolly’s Tunnel are cottages covered with leaves, where visitors can sit and enjoy the beauty of nature. Standing at the beginning of Knolly’s Tunnel, you can see nothing but the tiny light at the end. The train tracks have been removed and replaced with small stones. Visitors can drive through the tunnel or walk through, but should do so in groups for safety. In the old days, there were no lights, but now there are street lights on the way to the tunnel, though not inside. On your way in, you may notice some manholes on the walls of the tunnel. These were there for individuals to step into for safety as the train passed. Knolly’s Tunnel can be accessed through Tabaquite and through Mitchell Gap. The road was recently improved, but is better when you enter from Tabaquite, and there are signs on the road directing you to Knolly’s Tunnel. On the drive to Knolly’s Tunnel there are two other cottages where visitors can sit and just enjoy nature. At the site itself, there is nothing to purchase to eat or drink, but in Tabaquite there are several bars, a restaurant, and food outlets. A gas station and a health centre are also close by. For those who admire architecture, Knolly’s Tunnel is a must-see when visiting Trinidad. For the nature lovers, there is no better place for them to be and for the historians, they can walk or drive through Knolly’s Tunnel knowing that many of our ancestors toiled on its structure. So when you visit Trinidad, don’t forget to take a look at Knolly’s Tunnel! 39659. Knolly’s Tunnel is special in _______.A. its environmentB. its functionC. its locationD. its architecture60. I f you are visiting Knolly’s Tunnel, you can ______.A. drive through itB. buy your meals in itC. take a train tour through itD. walk along the track through it61. The underlined word “site” in the last paragraph refers to______.A. TrinidadB. TabaquiteC. Mitchell GapD. Knolly’s Tunnel62. What is the purpose of the passage?A. To suggest a visit to Knolly’s Tunnel.B. To tell the history of Knolly’s Tunnel.C. To evaluate the value of Knolly’s Tunnel.D. To witness the change of Knolly’s Tunnel.CIn the face of the tensions and pressures we all face every single day, a sense of humor can be helpful. The ability to laugh is very important to our fullest development and to our “mental health”. And if we can laugh at ourselves, we’re even further along the r oad to self-fulfillment. Consider the following example.Gordon is hoping to become a professional singer. He has a good voice, and has performed in public many times. But he’s very sensitive about his abilities. For instance, if his voice coach suggests he practice a particular song a few more times until he gets it right, Gordon falls apart, absolutely certain that the coach is implying that he isn’t any good and he has no future in music. He mentioned his sensitivity in his paper for a psychology class. The psychology professor called him in, outwardly to talk about the paper, but hoping to give the boy a chance to open up about the problem. The teacher rarely told her students what they ought to do, but she felt Gordon should know that such extreme sensitivity would make it difficult for him in the entertainment field, where stage personnel, and fellow performers often are very hard on new talent. She asked Gordon if he felt he had made necessary preparations to follow through in such a competitive and difficult business.Gordon got angry with the teacher, pointing a brave finger at her, and told her she was “dead wrong” about him. Further, Gordon asked what she could possibly know about music and the pressures of the profession. The teacher stood up and turned Gordon around, right in the middle of a sentence, asking him to continue, but to watch himself in the mirror on the back of the office door as he talked. Gordon tried to go on, pointing and gesticulating, but suddenly he saw his expression in the mirror, then when he turned to face the psychologist, he noticed a smile beginning to form on the teacher’s face. At the very top of his “outburst,” Gordon burst out laughing. He stopped his aggressive talk and asked the teacher if he looked that ridiculous all the time.Seeing himself “objectively” made Gordon realize that how ridiculous it was to take himself so seriously. In our everyday life, the ability to catch ourselves being so serious, bearing all the burdens of the world, and trying to save the human race helps us relieve some built-up tension through laughter.Laughter is a necessary part of mental health. Laughter is one of the ways in which we relax and recreate the selfhood. The things we find in humor may vary, but the experiences of humor, pleasure, and enjoyment are extremely important and must be fostered.63. From the first two paragraphs, we can learn that Gordon ________.A. has broken up with his coachB. has failed to be a professional singerC. keeps practicing and hopes for the bestD. feel s very sensitive to other people’s comments64. Why did the psychologist talk with Gordon?A. To discuss his paper with him.B. To help him realize his problem.C. To point out his rude behaviors.D. To offer advice on reducing pressure.65. How does the author support his ideas?A. By offering analyses.B. By providing research results.C. By giving an example.D. By stating an argument.66. What is mainly discussed in the passage?A. Means of laughter.B. Benefits of humor.C. The cause of sensitivity.D. The importance of health.DCan Training Your Working Memory Make You Smarter? We would all like to increase our cognitive(认知的) ability beyond the limits set by Mother Nature. So it’s no wonder that brain-training programmes –which typically focus on training our working memory – are a multibillion-dollar industry. But can this kind of training really make us smarter?Cognitive training sees the brain as a kind of muscle that can be made stronger with the right kind of practice. It consists of tasks or games carried out on computers or smart phones. Despite much research, there has so far been no agreement about its effectiveness. Some think that cognitive training increases a broad range of cognitive abilities, while others less optimistic.Yet we do know that some cognitive skills, such as working memory and intelligence, tend to go together and are predictors of real-life skills such as work performance. Thus, training one cognitive skill might lead to an improvement in many other cognitive and non-cognitive skills. That is exactly the underlying hypothesis(假设) on which working-memory training is based. To test this hypothesis, we examined all the studies about working-memory training we could find with normally developing children: 26 experiments and 1,601 total participants. Children represent an ideal test group: during childhood, skills are still at the beginning of their development. Thus, cognitive training is more likely to succeed with children than adults. The results were very clear. Working-memory training did not show any effect on children’s fluid intelligence, a person’s ability to solve new problems and adapt to new situations. It didn’t influence their academic achievement or other cognitive abilities, either. The only reliable effect was that children got better at what they trained to do. No more, no less. So performing working-memory tasks does seem to make you better at doing them. Nonetheless, the fact that participants got better at such tasks does not necessarily mean that their working-memory ability increased. They may just have learnt how to perform that particular type of task. The results do indicate that the use of working-memory training programs as an educational tool is fruitless. More generally, together with other research, the results contribute to disproving cognitive training companies’ promises of a better brain. The results have even more important implications theoretically. They question the hypothesis that training general cognitive mechanisms can affect other cognitive or real-life skills.Beyond working-memory training, other recent studies have shown the limitations of different types of cognitive training. For example, music training fails at improving cognitive skills outside music – including academic skills. However, these negative results must not discourage us from training our cognitive and non-cognitive skills. We just have to be aware of the actual limitations of such practice in areas outside what we are actually training. But that do esn’t mean we shouldn’t do it – the most efficient way to develop a skill is, after all, to train that skill.67. According to the passage, cognitive training is likely to _______.A. uncover the secrets of human mindsB. make one’s brain stronger throug h practiceC. bring much profit to the training companiesD. earn a good reputation for the training company68. To find out the effect of working memory training, the author ______.A. made some scientific studiesB. compared different test groupsC. reviewed the previous researchD. got some children involved in the experiment69. Children taking part in the experiments were able to_____.A. adapt to new situations quicklyB. gain greater academic achievementsC. do better in the field that they are trained inD. succeed when they deal with real life problems70. What is the author’s attitude toward the cognitive training?A. Uninterested.B. Objective.C. Disapproving.D. Optimistic.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
