But in 2009 the online retail firm Alibaba adopted the day to promote a massive online shopping sale. It said the date was easy to remember, and conveniently placed in a consumer spending lull between National Day and Chinese New Year holiday.
Singles' Day rapidly became a hit. Other online retailers began cashing in, and Alibaba copyrighted the term "Double 11".光棍节很快就成为热门话题,其他的在线零售商也开始从中分羹,阿里巴巴为“双十一”这个称谓申请了版权。

Answer the questions below each text by choosing [A], [B], [C], or [D]. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (40 points)Text 1In spite of “endless talk of difference,” American society is an amazing machine for homogenizing people. There is “the democratizing uniformity of dress and discourse, and the casualness and absence of deference” characteristic of popular culture. People are absorbed into “a culture of consumption” launched by the 19th-century department stores that offered “vast arrays of goods in an elegant atmosphere. Instead of intimate shops catering to a knowledgeable elite,” these were stores “anyone could enter, regardless of class or background. This turned shopping into a public and democratic act.” The mass media, advertising and sports are other forces for homogenization.Immigrants are quickly fitting into this common culture, which may not be altogether elevating but is hardly poisonous. Writing for the National Immigration Forum, Gregory Rodriguez reports that today’s immigration is neither at unprecedented levels nor resistant to assimilation. In 1998 immigrants were 9.8 percent of population; in 1900, 13.6 percent. In the 10 years prior to 1990, 3.1 immigrants arrived for every 1,000 residents; in the 10 years prior to 1890, 9.2 for every 1,000. Now, consider three indices of assimilation -- language, home ownership and intermarriage. The 1990 Census revealed that “a majority of immigrants from each of the fifteen most common countries of origin spoke English ‘well’or ‘very well’ after ten years of residence.” The children of immigrants tend to be bilingual and proficient in English. “By the third generation, the original language is lost in the majority of immigrant families.”Hence the description of America as a “graveyard” for languages. By 1996 foreign-born immigrants who had arrived before 1970 had a home ownership rate of 75.6 percent, higher than the 69.8 percent rate among native-born Americans.Foreign-born Asians and Hispanics “have higher rates of intermarriage than do U.S.-born whites and blacks.”By the third generation, one third of Hispanic women are married to non-Hispanics, and 41 percent of Asian-American women are married to non-Asians.Rodriguez notes that children in remote villages around the world are fans of superstars like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Garth Brooks, yet “some Americans fear that immigrants living within the United States remain somehow immune to the nation’s assimilative power.”Are there divisive issues and pockets of seething anger in America? Indeed. It is big enough to have a bit of everything. But particularly when viewed against America’s turbulent past, today’s social indices hardly suggest a dark and deteriorating social environment.21. The word “homogenizing” (Line 2, Paragraph 1) most probably means________.[A] identifying[B] associating[C] assimilating[D] monopolizing22. According to the author, the department stores of the 19th century________.[A] played a role in the spread of popular culture[B] became intimate shops for common consumers[C] satisfied the needs of a knowledgeable elite[D] owed its emergence to the culture of consumption23. The text suggests that immigrants now in the U.S. ________.[A] are resistant to homogenization[B] exert a great influence on American culture[C] are hardly a threat to the common culture[D] constitute the majority of the population24. Why are Arnold Schwarzenegger and Garth Brooks mentioned inParagraph 5?[A] To prove their popularity around the world.[B] To reveal the public’s fear of immigrants.[C] To give examples of successful immigrants.[D] To show the powerful influence of American culture.25. In the author’s opinion, the absorption of immigrants into Americansociety is ________.[A] rewarding[B] successful[C] fruitless[D] harmfulText 2Stratford-on-Avon, as we all know, has only one industry -- William Shakespeare -- but there are two distinctly separate and increasingly hostile branches. There is the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), which presents superb productions of the plays at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre on the Avon. And there are the townsfolk who largely live off the tourists who come, not to see the plays, but to look at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, Shakespeare’s birthplace and the other sights. The worthy residents of Stratford doubt that the theatre adds a penny to their revenue. They frankly dislike the RSC’s actors, them with their long hair and beards and sandals and noisiness. It’s all deliciously ironic when you consider that Shakespeare, who earns their living, was himself an actor (with a beard) and did his share of noise-making.The tourist streams are not entirely separate. The sightseers who come by bus -- and often take in Warwick Castle and Blenheim Palace on the side -- don’t usually see the plays, and some of them are even surprised to find a theatre in Stratford. However, the playgoers do manage a little sight-seeing along with their playgoing. It is the playgoers, the RSC contends, who bring in much of the town’s revenue because they spend the night (some of them four or five nights) pouring cash into the hotels and restaurants. The sightseers can take in everything and get out of town by nightfall. The townsfolk don’t see it this way and local council does not contribute directly to the subsidy of the Royal Shakespeare Company. Stratford cries poor traditionally. Nevertheless every hotel in town seems to be adding a new wing or cocktail lounge. Hilton is building its own hotel there, which you may be sure will be decorated with Hamlet Hamburger Bars, the Lear Lounge, the Banquo Banqueting Room, and so forth, and will be very expensive.Anyway, the townsfolk can’t understand why the Royal Shakespeare Company needs a subsidy. (The theatre has broken attendance records for three years in a row. Last year its 1,431 seats were 94 percent occupied all year long and this year they’ll do better.) The reason, of course, is that costs have rocketed and ticket prices have stayed low.It would be a shame to raise prices too much because it would drive away the young people who are Stratford’s most attractive clientele. They come entirely for the plays, not the sights. They all seem to look alike (though they come from all over) -- lean, pointed, dedicated faces, wearing jeans and sandals, eating their buns and bedding down for the night on the flagstones outside the theatre to buy the 20 seats and 80 standing-room tickets held for the sleepers and sold to them when the box office opens at 10:30 a.m.26. From the first two paragraphs, we learn that ________.[A] the townsfolk deny the RSC’s contribution to the town’s revenue[B] the actors of the RSC imitate Shakespeare on and off stage[C] the two branches of the RSC are not on good terms[D] the townsfolk earn little from tourism27. It can be inferred from Paragraph 3 that ________.[A] the sightseers cannot visit the Castle and the Palace separately[B] the playgoers spend more money than the sightseers[C] the sightseers do more shopping than the playgoers[D] the playgoers go to no other places in town than the theater28. By saying “Stratford cries poor traditionally” (Line 2-3, Paragraph4), the author implies that ________.[A] Stratford cannot afford the expansion projects[B] Stratford has long been in financial difficulties[C] the town is not really short of money[D] the townsfolk used to be poorly paid29. According to the townsfolk, the RSC deserves no subsidy because________.[A] ticket prices can be raised to cover the spending[B] the company is financially ill-managed[C] the behavior of the actors is not socially acceptable[D] the theatre attendance is on the rise30. From the text we can conclude that the author ________.[A] is supportive of both sides[B] favors the townsfolk’s view[C] takes a detached attitude[D] is sympathetic to the RSCText 3When prehistoric man arrived in new parts of the world, something strange happened to the large animals. They suddenly became extinct. Smaller species survived. The large, slow-growing animals were easy game, and were quickly hunted to extinction. Now something similar could be happening in the oceans. That the seas are being overfished has been known for years. What researchers such as Ransom Myers and Boris Worm have shown is just how fast things are changing. They have looked at half a century of data from fisheries around the world. Their methods do not attempt to estimate the actual biomass (the amount of living biological matter) of fish species in particular parts of the ocean, but rather changes in that biomass over time. According to their latest paper published in Nature, the biomassof large predators (animals that kill and eat other animals) in a new fishery is reduced on average by 80% within 15 years of the start of exploitation. In some long-fished areas, it has halved again since then.Dr. Worm acknowledges that these figures are conservative. One reason for this is that fishing technology has improved. Today’s vessels can find their prey using satellites and sonar, which were not available 50 years ago. That means a higher proportion of what is in the sea is being caught, so the real difference between present and past is likely to be worse than the one recorded by changes in catch sizes. In the early days, too, longlines would have been more saturated with fish. Some individuals would therefore not have been caught, since no baited hooks would have been available to trap them, leading to an underestimate of fish stocks in the past. Furthermore, in the early days of longline fishing, a lot of fish were lost to sharks after they had been hooked. That is no longer a problem, because there are fewer sharks around now.Dr. Myers and Dr. Worm argue that their work gives a correct baseline, which future management efforts must take into account. They believe the data support an idea current among marine biologists, that of the “shifting baseline.” The notion is that people have failed to detect the massive changes which have happened in the ocean because they have been looking back only a relatively short time into the past. That matters because theory suggests that the maximum sustainable yield that can be cropped from a fishery comes when the biomass of a target species is about 50% of its original levels. Most fisheries are well below that, which is a bad way to do business.31. The extinction of large prehistoric animals is noted to suggest that________.[A] large animal were vulnerable to the changing environment[B] small species survived as large animals disappeared[C] large sea animals may face the same threat today[D] slow-growing fish outlive fast-growing ones32. We can infer from Dr. Myers and Dr. Worm’s paper that ________.[A] the stock of large predators in some old fisheries has reducedby 90%[B] there are only half as many fisheries as there were 15 years ago[C] the catch sizes in new fisheries are only 20% of the originalamount[D] the number of larger predators dropped faster in new fisheriesthan in the old33. By saying "these figures are conservative" (Line 1, paragraph 3),Dr. Worm means that ________.[A] fishing technology has improved rapidly[B] the catch-sizes are actually smaller than recorded[C] the marine biomass has suffered a greater loss[D] the data collected so far are out of date34. Dr. Myers and other researchers hold that ________.[A] people should look for a baseline that can work for a longer time[B] fisheries should keep their yields below 50% of the biomass[C] the ocean biomass should be restored to its original level[D] people should adjust the fishing baseline to the changingsituation35. The author seems to be mainly concerned with most fisheries’________.[A] management efficiency[B] biomass level[C] catch-size limits[D] technological applicationText 4Many things make people think artists are weird. But the weirdest may be this: artists’ only job is to explore emotions, and yet they choose to focus on the ones that feel bad. This wasn’t always so. The earliest forms of art, like painting and music, are those best suited for expressing joy. But somewhere from the 19th century onward, more artists began seeing happiness as meaningless, phony or, worst of all, boring, as we went from Wordsworth’s daffodils to Baudelaire’s flowers of evil. You could argue that art became more skeptical of happiness because modern times have seen so much misery. But it’s not as if earlier times didn’t know perpetual war, disaster and the massacre of innocents. The reason, in fact, may be just the opposite: there is too much damn happiness in the world today. After all, what is the one modern form of expression almost completely dedicated to depicting happiness? Advertising. The rise of anti-happy art almost exactly tracks the emergence of mass media, and with it, a commercial culture in which happiness is not just an ideal but an ideology.People in earlier eras were surrounded by reminders of misery. They worked until exhausted, lived with few protections and died young. In the West, before mass communication and literacy, the most powerful mass medium was the church, which reminded worshippers that their souls were in danger and that they would someday be meat for worms. Given all this, they did not exactly need their art to be a bummer too.Today the messages the average Westerner is surrounded with are not religious but commercial, and forever happy. Fast-food eaters, news anchors, text messengers, all smiling, smiling, smiling. Our magazines feature beaming celebrities and happy families in perfect homes. And since these messages have an agenda -- to lure us to open our wallets -- they make the very idea of happiness seem unreliable. “Celebrate!”commanded the ads for the arthritis drug Celebrex, before we found out it could increase the risk of heart attacks. But what we forget -- what our economy depends on us forgetting -- is that happiness is more than pleasure without pain. The things that bring the greatest joy carry the greatest potential for loss and disappointment. Today, surrounded by promises of easy happiness, we need art to tell us, as religion once did, Memento mori: remember that you will die, that everything ends, and that happiness comes not in denying this but in living with it. It’s a message even more bitter than a clove cigarette, yet, somehow, a breath of fresh air.36. By citing the examples of poets Wordsworth and Baudelaire, the authorintends to show that ________.[A] poetry is not as expressive of joy as painting or music[B] art grows out of both positive and negative feelings[C] poets today are less skeptical of happiness[D] artists have changed their focus of interest37. The word “bummer”(Line 5, paragraph 5) most probably meanssomething ________.[A] religious[B] unpleasant[C] entertaining[D] commercial38. In the author’s opinion, advertising ________.[A] emerges in the wake of the anti-happy art[B] is a cause of disappointment for the general public[C] replaces the church as a major source of information[D] creates an illusion of happiness rather than happiness itself39. We can learn from the last paragraph that the author believes________.[A] happiness more often than not ends in sadness[B] the anti-happy art is distasteful but refreshing[C] misery should be enjoyed rather than denied[D] the anti-happy art flourishes when economy booms40. Which of the following is true of the text?[A] Religion once functioned as a reminder of misery.[B] Art provides a balance between expectation and reality.[C] People feel disappointed at the realities of modern society.[D] Mass media are inclined to cover disasters and deaths.Part BDirections:In the following article, some sentences have been removed. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (10 points)On the north bank of the Ohio river sits Evansville, Ind., home of David Williams, 52, and of a riverboat casino (a place where gambling games are played). During several years of gambling in that casino, Williams, a state auditor earning $35,000 a year, lost approximately $175,000. He had never gambled before the casino sent him a coupon for $20 worth of gambling. He visited the casino, lost the $20 and left. On his second visit he lost $800. The casino issued to him, as a good customer, a "Fun Card", which when used in the casino earns points for meals and drinks, and enables the casino to track the user’s gambling activities. For Williams, those activities become what he calls "electronic heroin".(41) ________. In 1997 he lost $21,000 to one slot machine in two days. In March 1997 he lost $72,186. He sometimes played two slot machines at a time, all night, until the boat docked at 5 a.m., then went back aboard when the casino opened at 9 a.m. Now he is suing the casino, charging that it should have refused his patronage because it knew he was addicted. It did know he had a problem. In March 1998 a friend of Williams’s got him involuntarily confinedto a treatment center for addictions, and wrote to inform the casino of Williams’s gambling problem. The casino included a photo of Williams among those of banned gamblers, and wrote to him a “cease admissions”letter. Noting the medical/psychological nature of problem gambling behavior, the letter said that before being readmitted to the casino he would have to present medical/psychological information demonstrating that patronizing the casino would pose no threat to his safety or well-being.(42) ________.The Wall Street Journal reports that the casino has 24 signs warning: “Enjoy the fun... and always bet with your head, not over it.” Every entrance ticket lists a toll-free number for counseling from the Indiana Department of Mental Health. Nevertheless, Williams’s suit charges that the casino, knowing he was “helplessly addicted to gambling,”intentionally worked to “lure” him to “engage in conduct against his will.” Well.(43) ________.The fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders says “pathological gambling” involves persistent, recurring and uncontrollable pursuit less of money than of thrill of taking risks in quest of a windfall.(44) ________. Pushed by science, or what claims to be science, society is reclassifying what once were considered character flaws or moral failings as personality disorders akin to physical disabilities.(45) ________.Forty-four states have lotteries, 29 have casinos, and most of these states are to varying degrees dependent on -- you might say addicted to -- revenues from wagering. And since the first Internet gambling site was created in 1995, competition for gamblers’ dollars has become intense. The Oct. 28 issue of Newsweek reported that 2 million gamblers patronize 1,800 virtual casinos every week. With $3.5 billion being lost on Internet wagers this year, gambling has passed pornography as the Web’s most profitable business.[A] Although no such evidence was presented, the casino’s marketingdepartment continued to pepper him with mailings. And he entered the casino and used his Fun Card without being detected.[B]It is unclear what luring was required, given his compulsive behavior. And in what sense was his will operative?[C] By the time he had lost $5,000 he said to himself that if he couldget back to even, he would quit. One night he won $5,500, but he did not quit.[D] Gambling has been a common feature of American life forever, but fora long time it was broadly considered a sin, or a social disease. Now it is a social policy: the most important and aggressive promoter of gambling in America is the government.[E] David Williams’s suit should trouble this gambling nation. But don’t bet on it.[F] It is worrisome that society is medicalizing more and more behavioralproblems, often defining as addictions what earlier, sterner generations explained as weakness of will.[G] The anonymous, lonely, undistracted nature of online gambling isespecially conducive to compulsive behavior. But even if the government knew how to move against Internet gambling, what would be its grounds for doing so?Part CDirections:Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written clearly on ANSWER SHEET 2. (10 points)Is it true that the American intellectual is rejected and considered of no account in his society? I am going to suggest that it is not true. Father Bruckberger told part of the story when he observed that it is the intellectuals who have rejected America. But they have done more than that. They have grown dissatisfied with the role of intellectual. It is they, not America, who have become anti-intellectual.First, the object of our study pleads for definition. What is an intellectual? 46) I shall define him as an individual who has elected as his primary duty and pleasure in life the activity of thinking in a Socratic (苏格拉底) way about moral problems. He explores such problems consciously, articulately, and frankly, first by asking factual questions, then by asking moral questions, finally by suggesting action which seems appropriate in the light of the factual and moral information which he has obtained. 47) His function is analogous to that of a judge, who must accept the obligation of revealing in as obvious a manner as possible the course of reasoning which led him to his decision. This definition excludes many individuals usually referred to as intellectuals -- the average scientist, for one. 48) I have excluded him because, while his accomplishments may contribute to the solution of moral problems, he has not been charged with the task of approaching any but the factual aspects of those problems. Like other human beings, he encounters moral issues even in the everyday performance of his routine duties -- he is not supposed to cook his experiments, manufactureevidence, or doctor his reports. 49) But his primary task is not to think about the moral code which governs his activity, any more than a businessman is expected to dedicate his energies to an exploration of rules of conduct in business. During most of his waking life he will take his code for granted, as the businessman takes his ethics. The definition also excludes the majority of teachers, despite the fact that teaching has traditionally been the method whereby many intellectuals earn their living. 50) They may teach very well and more than earn their salaries, but most of them make little or no independent reflections on human problems which involve moral judgment. This description even fits the majority of eminent scholars. Being learned in some branch of human knowledge is one thing, living in "public and illustrious thoughts,” as Emerson would say, is something else.Section III WritingPart A51. 英语专业八级双十一狂潮作文题目
英语专业八级双十一狂潮作文题目英文回答:The Double Eleven shopping festival, also known as Singles' Day, has become a massive phenomenon in China in recent years. It is a day when online retailers offer huge discounts and promotions, attracting millions of shoppers to splurge on everything from electronics to clothing to household items.I remember last year during Double Eleven, I was browsing through different online stores looking for a good deal on a new laptop. I came across a store that was offering a 50% discount on a high-end model that I had been eyeing for a while. Without hesitation, I added it to my cart and checked out in a matter of minutes. It felt like I had hit the jackpot! The thrill of getting a great deal during Double Eleven is what makes the shopping frenzy so addictive. It's like atreasure hunt, where you have to quickly snatch up the best deals before they sell out. It's no wonder that people get caught up in the excitement and end up spending way more than they had originally planned. But at the same time, I also witnessed the downside of the Double Eleven madness. Some people get so caught up in the discounts and promotions that they end up buying things they don't really need or can't afford. It's easy to get carried away when you see all those tempting deals flashing on your screen.中文回答:双十一购物狂潮,也被称为光棍节,近年来在中国已经成为一个巨大的现象。

时事阅读写作素材讲义[17]双十一+美国大选Can’t buy me love: Singles’ DayToday is China’s unofficial but lucrative shopping holiday. On Singles’ Day—11/11—Alibaba and other Chinese retail giants offer discounts to celebrate singledom, raking in sales that dwarf those of Prime Day, one of Amazon’s biggest shopping bonanzas. This year Alibaba kicked off early with a Singles’ Day pre-sale last month. Expect records to be broken. Chinese shoppers will probably spend more than $40bn on Alibaba alone. American retailers, whose home economy is still in recovery from the covid-19 slump, are trying to get on Chinese consumers’ dance cards. Nike is even dropping a Singles’ Day version of its signature shoe, the Air Jordan. Thanks to tensions between the two countries, however, American retailers may notbe as popular as they would hope. A survey by AlixPartners, a consulting firm, revealed that two-thirds of Chinese consumers plan to prioritise domestic brands this Singles’ Day, and more than half will reduce spending on American goods.•❶Today is China’s unofficial but lucrative shopping holiday.▪双十一是中国非官方购物节,利润不菲。

TEST 1Back in 1979, a fat, unhealthy property developer, Mel Zuckerman, and his exercise-fanatic wife, Enid, opened Canyon Ranch, “America’s first total vacation/fitness resort”, on an old dude ranch in Tucson, Arizona. At the time, their outdoorsy, new age-ish venture seemed highly eccentric. Today Canyon Ranch is arguably the premium health-spa brand of choice for the super-rich. It is growing fast and now operates in several places, including the Queen Mary 2.(1)________________.“There is a new market category called wellness lifestyle, and in a whole range of industries, if you are not addressing that category you are going to find it increasingly hard to stay in business,” enthuses Kevin Kelly, Canyon Ranch’s president. This broad new category, Mr. Kelly goes on, “consolidates a lot of subcategories” including spas, traditional medicine and alternative medicine, behavioural therapy, spirituality, fitness, nutrition and beauty. (2)________________ “You can no longer satisfy the consumer with just fitness, just medical, just spa,” says Mr. Kelly.Canyon Ranch’s strategy reflects this belief. (3) ________________ . This year in Miami Beach it will open the first of what it expects to be many upmarket housing estates built around a spa, called Canyon Ranch Living. Together with the Cleveland Clinic, one of the world’s leading private providers of traditional medicine, it is launching an “executive health”product which combines diagnosis, treatment and, above all, prevention. It also has plans to produce food and skin-care products, a range of clothes and healthy-living educational materials.(4)________________. Mr. Case reckons that one of the roots of today’s health-care crisis, especially in America, is that prevention and care are not suitably joined up. A growing number of employers now promote wellness at work, both to cut costs and to reduce stress and health-related absenteeism, says Jon Denoris of Catalyst Health, a gym business in London. He has been helping the British arm of Harley Davidson, a motorbike-maker, to develop a wellness programme for its workers. The desire to reduce health-care costs is one force behind the rise of the wellness industry; the other is the growing demand from consumers for things that make them feel healthier. Surveys find that three out of four adult Americans now feel that their lives are “out of balance”, says Mr. Kelly. So there is a huge opportunity to offer them products and services that make them feel more “balanced”. This represents a big change in consumer psychology, claims Mr. Kelly, and one that is likely to deepen over time: market research suggests that 35-year-olds have a much stronger desire to lead healthy lifestyles than 65-year-olds.(5)________________. Another will be to maintain credibility in (and for) an industry that combines serious science with snake oil. One problem—or is it an opportunity? —in selling wellness products to consumers is that some of the things they demand may be faddish ornonsensical. Easy fixes, such as new-age therapies, may appeal to them more than harder but proven ways to improve health. One of Canyon Ranch’s answers to this problem has been to hire Richard Carmona, who was America’s surgeon-general until last summer. In that role, he moved prevention and wellness nearer to the centre of public-health policy. The last time a surgeon-general ventured into business, it ended disastrously: during the internet bubble, Everett Koop launched , a medical-information site that went bust shortly after going public and achieving a market capitalisation of over $1 billion. This time around, the wellness boom seems unlikely to suffer such a nasty turn for the worse.(此⽂选⾃The Economist 2007年刊)[A] It is expanding a brand built on $1,000-a-night retreats for the rich and famous in several different directions.[B] Mr. Zuckerman, now a trim and sprightly 78-year-old, remains chairman of the firm.[C] There is growing evidence that focusing holistically on wellness can reduce health-care costs by emphasizing prevention over treatment.[D] One difficulty for wellness firms will be acquiring the expertise to operate in several different areas of the market.[E] It is also one of the leading lights in “wellness”, an increasingly mainstream—and profitable—business.[F] As more customers demand a holistic approach to feeling well, firms that have hitherto specialised in only one or two of those areas are now facing growing market pressure to broaden their business.[G] And there is much debate about the health benefits of vitamin supplements, organic food and alternative medicines, let alone different forms of spirituality.【答案解析】1. Since OPEC agreed to supply-cutsin March, the price of crude oil has jumped to almost $26 a barrel, up fromless than $10 last December. This near-tripling of oil prices calls up scarymemories of the 1973 oil shock, when prices quadrupled, and 1979-1980, whenthey also almost tripled. Both previous shocks resulted in double-digitinflation and global economic decline. So where are the headlines warning ofgloom and doom this time? The oil price was given another push up this week when Iraqsuspended oil exports. Strengthening economic growth, at the same time aswinter grips the northern hemisphere, could push the price higher still in theshort term。
Yet there are good reasons to expect the economic consequences nowto be less severe than in the 1970s. In most countries the cost of crude oilnow accounts for a smaller share of the price of petrol than it did in the1970s. In Europe, taxes account for up to four-fifths of the retail price, soeven quite big changes in the price of crude have a more muted effect on pumpprices than in the past。
2017考研英语阅读理解模拟题(二)及答案:管理学类
2017考研英语阅读理解模拟题(二)及答案:管理学类At the end of last week , Bodega Aurrerá, a Mexican subsidiary of the world's biggest retailer , Wal-Mart , opened a new store in the village of San JuanTeotihuacán, just north of Mexico City. Normally , such an event would cause little stir. Wal-Mart is already Mexico's biggest retailer too. And its shops seem to go down very well with its millions of bargain-hungry customers. But this particular opening was , in fact , the culmination of months of protests , legal actions , hunger strikes and hyperbole by those determined to stop it.The reason is the location. Just 2.5km (1.6 miles) away is the ancient city ofTeotihuacán, probably Mexico's most famous archaeological site. Amongst other attractions , it boasts the third-largest (by volume) pyramid in the world. For many Mexicans , the ancient site , abandoned by its mysterious inhabitants centuries before the Spanish conquerors arrived , remains the ultimate symbol of Mexican identity and nationhood. Thousands troop up to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun to celebrate the summer solstice. To them , the idea of having a Wal-Mart next door is abhorrent. In the words of HomeroAridjis , a writer and one of the leading opponents , “it is like driving the stake of globalisation into the heart of old Mexico.” The controversy is only the latest in a string of protesters' attempts to save Mexican culture from what they see as a creeping menace. They won a famous victory by blocking a McDonaldsrestaurant from opening in the main square of the pretty southern colonial town of Oaxaca. But this time they were on much thinner ground. For a start , Wal-Mart went through all the appropriate regulatory hoops , even getting permission from the Paris-based International Council on Monuments and Sites , which judged that the store would cause no harm to the nearby ruins. A small stone platform was indeed found during construction of the new car park , but was preserved.Just as importantly , the claim that the new store spoils the famous view from the top of the Pyramid of the Sun is clearly bogus , as anyone who cares to get to the top can testify. The problem is not so much that you can see the Wal-Mart , but one of trying to distinguish it from the 30-odd other ugly , squat buildings that litter the surrounding countryside ——to say nothing of the car parks , theelectricity pylons and the large power station. Sadly , unrestricted building long ago ruined this particular view , as well as many others in Mexico. To the diehards , the issue counts more than the view. But neither mattered much to the hundreds of locals who queued up for the opening , delighted to be freed of the small and expensive local shops. Despite a legal case pending against Wal-Mart and local officials , brought by an irate local left-wing politician , this is one battle that the American retailer has probably won.1. Why the opening of Wal-Mart caused stir?[A]Wal-Mart would have severe competition with the local stores.[B]War-Mart would provide them with a larger choice and more benefits.[C]It was said to have ruined the scene of the ancient site.[D]There shouldn‘t be a store near the ancient site.2. From Paragraph 2 we can infer that _________.[A]the ancient city means a lot to the Mexicans[B]a store will be too noisy for the ancient city[C]the ancient city is very mysterious[D]the pyramid is a good place for holding big ceremony3. According to Wal-Mart , it has a good reason to build store there because _______.[A]it proves no harm to the nearby ruins[B]the scene of the ancient sites has been damaged[C]customers want to buy some cheap products[D]it has been widely accepted by the customers there.4. It can be learned from Paragraph 5 that _________.[A]the famous view is not as good as it used to be[B]the city lacks planning in building[C]the ancient site is littered with ugly buildings[D]Wal-Mart shouldn‘t be fully responsible for the ruined view.5. Toward the fate of Wal-Mart , the writer‘s attitude can be said to be _________.[A]objective[B]optimistic[C]pessimistic[D]biased答案:CADDB注(1):本文选自Economist; 11/13/2004, p42;注(2):本文习题命题模仿对象2001年真题Text 4(其中因2001年真题Text 4只有四个题目,所以本文第4题模仿参照对象为2003年Text 1的第四题)。

There is no doubt that the table displays accidents in one Chinese city. As is clearly depicted, drivers turning left without due care cause the most accidents in this city and the percentage of drivers driving under the influence of alcohol enjoys the biggest rise in 2005. Obviously, the difference manifested by the table should be given more concern. What might trigger this affair? For one part, the general public have failed to realize the importance of abiding by the traffic regulations and laws (and a big deal of the attention have been distracted by the so-called “great affair”.) Once some drivers easily disregard the traffic signals, so do other drivers who intend to obey the laws. Moreover, the current state of affairs depicted in the drawing, may have been encouraged, though not justified, by the lack of severe legal penalty. It is advisable for us to take steps to reverse this current evil trend. On one hand, we should cultivate the awareness of people .On the other hand, it is high time that more severe and sound laws and regulations should be introduced to harness and curb this matter. Only in this way, can we crack the hard nut and embrace a bright future. As is seen from the two graphs, it is clear that with the rapid growth of U.S. population from 1800 to 1990, the number of its wildlife species no longer existing soared during the same period. Naturally, we can draw the conclusion that the sharp decline of wildlife species resulted from the population growth. At least three fundamental factors could contribute to this phenomenon. To begin with, as the population grows, people consume much more natural resources, which often leads to excessive hunting. To continue, with the increase of human activities, modern people take up more and more space, which has an undesirable impact on other species. Finally, the problem of pollution becomes more and more serious with the development of modern industry. More and more animals have to adapt themselves to the decaying environment or move to a totally different place, but not all of them are fortunate enough to survive the changes. Solving this problem calls for, above all, the government’s efforts to control population growth, to decrease industrial pollution and to enhance the laws to forbid wildlife hunting. Moreover, common citizens should be aware of this ecological crisis and take on the responsibility of wildlife protection. In a word, only when the government and the common people make joint efforts can we hope to find a satisfactory solution to protect wildlife. 文化生活类(专硕学硕人数变化)What is illustrated in the bar chart above clearly shows that significant changes have occur regarding the contrast between the number of students who choose academic master degree and professional master degree. According to the figures given, we can see the number of students applying professional master degree has been on a steady rise. While recent years have saw a decrease in the number of students who intend to gain academic master degree. Some driving factors that contribute to the above-mentioned change may summarized as follows. To begin with, under the circumstance of Chinese booming domestic market, an increasing number of students who are expert in professional skills are badly needed. In addition, the development of job market on the whole cannot keep pace with the expansion of college graduates, which obliges many students to stay on campus for another two or three years to get better prepared for their career. Finally, we must admit that working pressure is another important factor. Taking all these factors into consideration, we may predict that with the rapid development of our society, the number of students of professional master degree will keep growing in the forthcoming decade. 络类(购、微博、微信等新现象) 2014年消费者获取产品信息途径比例调查As is clearly mirrored in the above pie chart, the proportion of ways for shoppers to obtain the product information demonstrates evident distinctions in 2014. According to the data given, the Internet advertisement takes a lion’s share, accounting for 40%. While TV commercials and flyers take away respectively 22% and 18% of the whole proportion. What triggers this phenomenon? It is not difficult to put forward several factors responsible for this. Initially, with the accelerated advancement of the Internet technology, theincrease of netizens is apparently noticed by us. Thus, numerous individuals tend to buy products online instead of going for the real shop in the streets or shopping malls. To continue, TVs are still widely in use for most families, which supports a strong purchase power by TV commercials. Terminally, quite a few folks are giving out flyers to the passers-by, and most of them would like to accept it, and this is the very reason why flyers rank the third in the pie chart. In view of the arguments above, we can conclude that the current phenomenon is of no surprise. And therefore, it can be predicted that the network way will undoubtedly advance in the years ahead. What is explicitly demonstrated in the above chart is the sales changes of online shopping in domestic market over the period from 2011 to 2015. The turnover of e-commerce saw a substantial gain from approximately 800 billion in 2011 to 2500 billion in 2014. Surprisingly, it is predicted that the figure will continue to soar dramatically to roughly 3400 billion in2015. We can easily recognize its advantages as follows: e-commerce, which is extremely convenient, can save us a great amount of precious time and we can buy products everywhere you want as long as we can surf online. However, for all the advantages mentioned above, online trading is by no means without its limitations as listed below: we may be cheated by some online retailers, which might be a potential threat to our bank accounts. Accordingly, it is imperative for us to take drastic measures. For one thing, we should appeal to the authorities to make strict legislations to severely punish those who deliberately spoil the interests of online customers. For another, we should enhance the awareness of residents that rational purchasing is conducive to our income management. Only in this way can we maximize the merits andminimize the demerits of online purchasing.。

Directions:Write an essay based on the following chart. In your essay, you should1)interpret the table, and2)give your comments. You should write about 150 words on ANSWER SHEET. (15 points) 购物方式的变化The chart above shows the change of ways of shopping from 2000 to 2010. As can be seen from the above chart, from 2000 to 2010, the rate of online shopping kept on increasing, from 31.6% to 52.3%, while the traditional shopping fell dramatically from 75.3% to 43.2% occasionally. From then on, both the rate of online shopping and the rate of traditional shopping increased. It is no difficult job for us to come up with some possible factors that underlie the above changes. In the first place, with the development of our economy, people have changed their lifestyles. They did not regard traditional shopping as a good thing. Therefore, the rate of traditional shopping had begun to fall down since 2000. In the second place, with the improvement of both living standards of people and the technique of Internet, people can enjoy shopping online. Thus the rate of traditional shopping had also begun to fall down since 2000 as shown in the chart. From what has been discussed so far, it can be predicted thatthe present situation will continue for quite a while in the near future. People will have fewer and fewer traditional shopping, and they will enjoy more and more online shopping.。

Alibaba Group saw its gross merchandize volume breaking last year's record within half a day after the 24-hour online shopping festival kicked off on Nov 11.
Alibaba saw its gross merchandise volume reach 10 billion yuan within 12 minutes and 28 seconds after the 2015 Tmall Global Shopping Festival started on Nov 11. Last year, it took 38 minutes and 28 seconds to reach that mark.
Prior to the main Singles' Day event was a star-spangled extravaganza set to rival the Spring Festival Gala on China Central Television. According to Alibaba, viewers can watch the gala at 8:30 pm on Tuesday, on television, tablets and mobile phones. Moreover, they can also win coupons and discounts on items by shaking their smartphones during the broadcast.
The new model of this kind of "from TV to online" gala has quickly caught on in China's hyper-competitive e-commerce industry. Inc, Alibaba's biggest rival in e-commerce, also held a gala to lure customers before Nov 11.
马上学:双十一各种眼花缭乱的促销让小伙伴们成了剁手党(hands-chopping people:big online spenders who self-mockingly say that they would like to chop their hands off after buying too much online.),英文中比较接近接近的词汇是shopaholic(购物狂)。
例:You girls are all
shopaholics.(你们这些姑娘都是购物狂啊!)。
