I just finished up the most exciting school year ever and I can't wait to tell you all about it!At the beginning of the year, I was a little nervous because I was going into a new grade with a new teacher, Ms. Roberts. But she turned out to be the coolest teacher ever! On the first day, she had us go around and share our favorite things. I said video games and she gave me a high-five! Score!Ms. Roberts made learning super fun. Like, in math class, we got to play all these cool games to practice our multiplication facts. My favorite was this one where we rolled dice and raced around the room collecting number cards. Whoever got to 500 first won a pack of stickers. You better believe I have the sickest sticker collection now!But the best part of 5th grade by far was our class field trips. We went on three big ones this year and they were all amazing. First up was the science museum. We got to see a planetarium show all about the planets and stars. Then we went into thisroom with cool experiments you could try, like making a little hovercraft out of a CD and a balloon. Coolest museum ever!A few months later, we headed to the art museum downtown. I'm not going to lie, I wasn't super excited about this one at first. But once we got there, I was blown away by all the incredible paintings and sculptures. My favorite was this huge metal sculpture that looked like a tangle of vines. So intricate! We even got to sculpt with clay ourselves in their studio which was a blast.But the field trip that takes the cake had to be ourend-of-year camping trip to Maple Ridge State Park. We stayed in these sweet cabins in the woods for two nights. During the days, we went on nature hikes, roasted marshmallows, and my cabin even built an awesome fort out of sticks and leaves. One night, a park ranger came and taught us all about the constellations. We got to look at them through his superhigh-tech telescope. I've never seen so many stars!And of course, no school year is complete without some pretty epic games at recess. Whenever it was nice out, we'd have massive games of kickball or basketball going. Even when it rained, we'd head inside for some rousing rounds of dodgeball or capture the flag. No better way to burn off all that kid energy!Phew, I'm getting tired just thinking about everything we packed into this year. Though I'll miss 5th grade something fierce, I'm so stoked for middle school next year. I heard the science labs there are out of this world! I can't wait to tell you all about it.It started out pretty normal. School let out in June and I was really excited for summer to begin. No more homework or waking up early! I could just relax and play video games all day if I wanted to. That's what I did for the first couple of weeks actually. I beat all my favorite games and even got some new high scores. My mom kept saying I needed to get out of the house more, but I was having fun.Then my parents said we were going on a big family road trip! I wasn't too excited about that at first because road trips can be really boring, just sitting in the car forever. But they said we were going to Yellowstone National Park and that got me interested. I had learned about Yellowstone in school and knew there were geysers, bears, and all sorts of cool nature stuff there.We packed up the car with our suitcases, snacks, and games for the drive. It took us almost two whole days of driving to get to Yellowstone from our house. I'll admit, some of that drive was pretty boring. But we did fun road trip games like I Spy, 20 Questions, and looked for license plates from as many states as we could find. We also stopped along the way at some big playgrounds and parks to stretch our legs.When we finally made it to Yellowstone, it was amazing! The park was huge with so many different trails, forests, rivers, and meadows to explore. We saw parts of the park by driving the scenic routes, but we also went on lots of hikes. My favorite hike was to the Grand Prismatic Spring, which is this massive hot spring with brilliant colors of orange, yellow, and blue. It looked like something from another planet! We also saw the famous Old Faithful geyser erupt, which was really cool. Seeing all that hot water and steam blast up into the air was incredible.One of the biggest highlights was when we spotted real live bears in the park! We were driving along and there was a grizzly bear and her two cubs just wandering near the trees. We watched them from a safe distance in the car, and I thought they were so cute. The ranger said we were really lucky to see them. We also saw herds of bison just casually crossing the road or resting in the grass. It felt like we had gone back in time to when animals roamed freely.Aside from the park itself, I also loved the freedom of summer vacation. No school meant I could sleep in as late as I wanted. My parents still made me do some educational activities and reading, but it wasn't too bad. We went to the park a lot and I could run around and play as much as I wanted. We also did lots of fun summer activities like having backyard campouts, going to the swimming pool, having picnics, and checking out events around town. Summer is just the best when you're a kid!Too soon, it was August and time to go back to school. I was really sad that summer was over. Saying goodbye to the freedom and sitting through long days at school again is never fun. But I'm really glad I got to go on our epic Yellowstone adventure. That will definitely be a summer I never forget!I made so many awesome memories this summer. It was everything a summer vacation should be - exploring new places, having adventures, and making the most of that amazingno-school freedom.
