China Scholarship Council--Overview of doctoral scholarship programFaculty of Graduate Studies contact: jenny.phelps@ubc.caIntroductionThe China Scholarship Council is a government agency in China which provides scholarships to students for doctoral and postdoctoral studies abroad. UBC has recently developed an agreement with the CSC and with specific Chinese universities to be a preferred host institution for CSC scholarship holders. These scholarships will be awarded to students across a wide range disciplines.There are two types of CSC doctoral scholarships. One is called a “full” scholarship to register in a doctoral program abroad with the intent of attending full-time for the entire program and earn a degree at the Canadian institution. The other is called a “sandwich”or “visiting” scholarship in order to be a visiting doctoral student at a Canadian institution for one year.NOTE: Many students awarded “full” CSC doctoral scholarships are new graduates of Bachelor’s level programs. To qualify for the CSC scholarship, these students must either 1) be admitted to a UBC PhD program directly from a Bachelor’s program or 2) be admitted to a UBC Master’s program with clear intent from UBC to “fast-track” the student to the PhD program within 18 months. At the Oklahoma State University , I confirmed my passion on asset allocation, pricing model, risk management and stock valuation in investment class. The mathematics statistics course and elementary statistics for business and economics course taught me how to apply statistics in the financial industry. As the few student who participated once in an exchange program, I feel fortunate to come across with different people and classes in various environments, which make me more confident to deal with the study in USA.Not content with simple simulations in the school, thereafter I took internships in real-world companies. Postgraduate Scholarship Program
1.Brief Introduction
Established in 2007 by China Scholarship Council (CSC), a non-profit institution entrusted by the Chinese Government to manage the State Scholarship Fund, the Postgraduate Scholarship Program aims to improve the training of creative and distinguished postgraduates and enhance the development of China’s higher education. From 2007 to 2012, CSC will sponsor each year up to six thousand talented Chinese students for overseas study, pursuing doctoral degrees or conducting academic cooperation under joint-training programs at world-class university. As one of the most prestigious universities in China, South China University of Technology plans to send 80 postgraduates each year under this program for overseas study. It is believed that this scholarship program also extends a precious opportunity for our university to expand and enhance academic and research cooperation with top universities around the world.
Scholarship Benefits:
□A living stipend as prescribed by Chinese government. For example, postgraduates studying in the U.S.A. will receive a stipend of 1000-1100 USD for one month.
□ Health insurance
□A round-way international airfare at the beginning and end of the program
2.Joint-Training Program
Postgraduates currently registered at a doctoral program at South China University of Technology can apply for 6-24 moth overseas joint-training programs under CSC scholarship. The joint-training program is organized under the cooperation of doctoral supervisors at home university and the host university abroad. Doctoral students are expected to come back to South China University of Technology after this joint training for their dissertation defense and degree awarding.
Application materials include a formal invitation letter from the host supervisor, a jointly designed research plan approved by both supervisors, and an introduction of the host supervisor with his/her personal information and academic achievements during the last five years should be included in the application.
The invitation letter must be a formal letter printed on university letterhead addressed to the applicant and signed by the host supervisor. The content should include the following: personal information of the student being invited, period of invitation, major research field and plan, statement of tuition fee wavier, and notes the applicant’s English language meets the host university’s language requirement. If any tuition fee or registration fee is involved or might occur during the joint training that cannot be waived, a list of these fees attached with the application will be appreciated.
Supervisors at home and abroad have to work together to design a research plan for the applicants.
A Chinese-English research plan with no less than 1000 words on each version and signed by both supervisors in required for application.
The intellectual property right of publications or achievement related to this joint-training program should be respected following relevant requirements of Graduate School of South China University of Technology.。
