汽车靠传动轴传递功率后,在传动轴与发动机之 间安置了变速器,使发动机在一定的转速内工作,而汽 车可以有不同的行驶速度,变速器由齿轮传动,主动齿 轮与发动机连接,从动齿轮与驱动轴连接,行驶中换档 时由于两个齿轮转速不同而啮合困难,强行啮合就有打 齿的危险,开始人们在变速箱的前后各装一个离合器, 换档时,用这两个离合器将变速器中的齿轮轴与发动机 和驱动轴都脱开。但是由于惯性,两齿轮转速达到同步 还得有一段时间,再加上两个离合器配合操纵很复杂, 使行驶换档非常困难行驶换档非常困难。 1929年,凯 迪莱克公司首先研制出同步器,它是通过同步器中锥面 相互摩擦使两个齿轮转速相同时才允许啮合。这样只要 有一个离合器就行了,换档时既轻便又不打齿,换档时 间也大大缩短了。后来在车上又增加了脚刹,控制传动 轴的转动。1914年开始出现轮内鼓式制动器1919年,法 国海斯柏诺-索扎公司制成用脚踏板统一控制的四轮鼓 式制动器,并由变速箱驱动一个机械伺服机构来增加制 动力,使制动效果大为改善。1921年,美国的杜森伯格 公司又推出了液压助力器,由一个主液压缸来放大制动 力;以后又出现了气动助力制动器。制动装置逐渐形成 了脚刹控制轮边制动,手刹控制传动轴制动的普遍的结 构形式。
