These remarkable young African-American students challenged segregation (隔离) in the deep South and won.Although Brown v. Board of Education outlawed segregation in schools, many school systems defied the law by intimidating and threatening black students —Central High School was a notorious example. But the Little Rock Nine were determined to attend the school and receive the same education offered to white students. Things grew ugly and frightening right away. On the first day of school, the governor of Arkansas ordered the state’s National Guard to block the black students from entering the school. President Eisenhower had to send in federal troops to protect the students. But that was only the beginning of their ordeal. Every morning on their way to school angry crowds of whites insulted the Little Rock Nine — they even received death threats. One of the students, fifteen-year-old Elizabeth Eckford, said "I tried to see a friendly face somewhere in the mob … I looked into the face of an old woma n, and it seemed a kind face, but when I looked at her again, she spat at me." Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice.Passage OneQuestions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. There was a time when big-league university presidents really mattered. The New York Times covered their every move. Presidents, the real ones, sought their counsel. For Woodrow Wilson and Dwight Eisenhower, being head of Princeton and Columbia, respectively, was a stepping-stone to the White House. Today, though, the job of college president is less and lessremoved from that of the Avon lady (except the house calls are made to the doorsteps of wealthy alums).Ruth Simmons, the newly installed president of Brown University and the first African American to lead an Ivy League school, is a throwback to the crusading campus leaders of old. She doesn’t merely marshal funds; she invests them in the great educational causes of our day. With the more than $300 million she raised as president of Smith College from 1995 to 2001, Simmons also established an engineering program (the first at any women’s school). At a meeting to discuss the future of Smith’s math department, one professor timidly requested two more discussion sections for his course. Her response: "Dream bigger."Her own dream was born in a sharecropper's shack in East Texas where there was no money for books or toys — she and her 11 siblings each got an apple, an orange and 10 nuts for Christmas. When Simmons won a scholarship to Dillard University, her high school teachers took up a collection so she’d have a coat. She went on to Harvard to earn a Ph.D. in Romance languages. Simmons has made diversity her No. 1 campus crusade. She nearly doubled the enrollment of black freshmen at Smith, largely by traveling to high schools in the nation’s poorest ZIP codes to recruit. Concerned with the lives of minority students once they arrive at school, she has fought to ease the racial standoffs that plague so many campuses. In 1993, while vice provost at Princeton, she wrote a now famous report recommending that the university establish an office of conflict resolution to defuse racial misunderstandings before they boiled over. Her first task at Brown will be to heal one such rupture last spring after the student paper published an incendiary ad by conservative polemicist David Horowitz arguing that blacks ec onomically benefited from slavery. "There’s no safe ground for anybody in race relations, but campuses, unlike any other institution in our society, provide the opportunity to cross racial lines," says Simmons. "And even if you’re hurt, you can’t walk away. You have to walk over that line."31.What does the author intend to illustrate with the example of Woodrow Wilson and Dwight Eisenhower?A) The president of the first-class university was really very important.B) The presidents gave them some good advice.C) The presidents of the university could easily go to the White House.D) The presidents had more power and authority than Avon ladies. A32.What does the author mean by "the job of college president is less and less removed from that of the Avon lady" (Para. 1)?A) College presidents can get their position with the help of the Avon lady.B) The jobs of college presidents and the Avon lady were quite similar.C) College presidents get inspiration from the job of the Avon lady.D) The jobs of college presidents and the Avon lady should be separated. B33.What can we infer from the 2nd paragraph?A) Simmons was an old crusading campus leader.B) Simmons wanted to expand her university.C) Simmons knew well about how to invest the money.D) Simmons was a competent and ambitious president. D34.What does the 4th paragraph mainly talk about?A) Simmons greatly sympathized the black people.B) Simmons wanted to diversify her university.C) Simmons made a great effort to solve the racial problems.D) Simmons wrote a famous report. C35.Which of the following is true according to the text?A) Simmons had successfully solved the racial problems.B) Simmons owed her success to her high school teachers.C) Simmons was born in a rich black family and received good education.D) Simmons asked her professor to be more ambitious. DPassage TwoQuestions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.Probably the hardest part of setting goals is the first step of actually deciding to take action! The first barrier facing most people is the incorrect assumption that goals are only for business people. The reality is everyone sets goals mentally throughout the day. There are always occasions where something has to be done at a particular time or in a particular place. Simple examples could be getting up at a certain time in order to be at work, or to meet with a friend for a leisure activity. The beauty of having goals is the uniqueness of each one to the goal setter.Whether it is personal, financial, business or spiritual, they are all specific to that person and their circumstances. The most important part initially is to write them down. Having goals written down gives you incredible power while helping you to focus on this area.Aim for something that will stretch you while remaining achievable. If you achieve your goal too easily, it is not high enough to make any significant change in your life and needs to be adjusted. On the other hand, if you consistently miss the goals, you will only get discouraged and probably give up. The aim is to keep growing, and moving into a more satisfactory position for your particular circumstances. As you obtain the levels that you have set for yourself, always include a small reward at each point. This might only be a small thing in the early days like a meal out or a weekend vacation. Remember that these changes will not happen overnight and there will be a period of time when nothing seems to be happening. This is why the goals need to be detailed and as specific as possible with a consequence and benefit.Allow some time on a daily basis to educate yourself on how to make the necessary adjustments in your life. This could include listening to a CD, or reading a book on motivation, etc.A simple method to start with could be one goal in the main areas of life to be achieved in one month, six months, twelve months or five years. Break that down further into a daily, weekly and monthly system. Stay focused and disciplined to achieve all that you desire.36.The simple examples in Paragraph 1 convey the message that ___________.A) goals are set mostly for important thingsB) most people know when it is time to set goalsC) people set goals to get things done all the timeD) it is necessary to set goals occasionally正确答案:C37.The charm of having goals is that each goal is ______________.A) importantB) motivatedC) specialD) spiritual正确答案:C38.A good goal is one that ________________.A) keeps growing all the timeB) is high enough yet attainableC) moves one into a satisfactory positionD) is evaluated from time to time正确答案:B39.Goals have to be detailed so that people ________________.A) can know their achievements at each stageB) will eventually reach the levels set for themselvesC) may get small rewards such as a meal outD) can adjust them on various occasions正确答案:A40.For a goal to be achieved, one has to ________________.A) believe in what he is doingB) adapt oneself to new changesC) divert from routine sometimesD) concentrate on it until it is attained正确答案:DPart III V ocabulary and Structure ( 11 minutes )Directions: There are a number of incomplete sentences in this part.

And finally, Chairman Jack Smith’s 5-min summary of the meeting.Engineering students are supposed to be examples of practicality and rationality, but when it comes to my college education I am an idealist and a fool. In high school I wantedheldincludingitemsprocessestablishedlastactivelyassessedto be an electrical engineer and, of course, any sensible student with my aims would have chosen a college with a large engineering department, famous reputation and lots of good labs and research equipment. But that’s not what I did.I chose to study engineering at a small liberal-arts(文科)university that doesn’t ev en offer a major in electrical engineering. Obviously, this was not a practical choice; I came here for more noble reasons. I wanted a broad education that would provide me with flexibility and a value system to guide me in my career. I wanted to open my eyes and expand my vision by interacting with people who weren’t studying science or engineering. My parents, teachers and other adults praised me for such a sensible choice. They told me I was wise and mature beyond my 18 years, and I believed them.I headed off to college sure I was going to have an advantage over those students who went to big engineering “factories” where they didn’t care if you had values or were flexible. I was going to be a complete engineer: technical genius and sensitive humanist(人文学者)all in one.Now I’m not so sure. Somewhere along the way my noble ideals crashed into reality, as all noble ideals eventually do. After three years of struggling to balance math, physics and engineering courses with liberal-arts courses, I have learned there are reasons why few engineering students try to reconcile(协调)engineering with liberal-arts courses in college. The reality that has blocked my path to become the typical successful student is that engineering and the liberal arts simply don’t’ mix as easily as I assumed in high school. Individually they shape a person in very different ways; together they threaten to confuse. The struggle to reconcile the two fields of study is difficult. The author chose to study engineering at a small liberal-arts university because he .A. wanted to be an example of practicality and rationalityB. intended to be a combination of engineer and humanistC. wanted to coordinate engineering with liberal-artscourses in collegeD. intended to be a sensible student with noble ideals问题23 2 分保存According to the author, by interacting with people who studyliberal arts, engineering students can .A. balance engineering and the liberal artsB. receive guidance in their careersC. become noble idealistsD. broaden their horizons问题24 2 分保存In the eyes of the author, a successful engineering student isexpected .A. to have an excellent academic recordB. to be wise and matureC. to be imaginative with a value system to guide himD. to be a technical genius with a wide vision问题25 2 分保存The author’s experience shows that he was .A. creativeB. ambitiousC. unrealisticD. irrational问题26 2 分保存The word “they” in “…together they threaten to confuse.” (Line 3,Para.5) refers to .A. engineering and the liberal artsB. reality and noble idealsC. flexibility and a value systemD. practicality and rationality。

All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, the n, lies in their associati ons —the things they bring up before our min ds.Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and effective use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should, therefore, learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar (粗俗).The origin of language is ____________ . B. a matter that is hidden or secret问题33 得 2 分,满分 2 分One of the reasons why men invented certain sounds to express thoughts and actions was that _________________________ . C. they could communicate with each other问题34 得 2 分,满分 2 分The real power of words exists in their ______________ .D. representative function所选答案:问题35 得 2 分,满分 2 分Which of the following statements about great writers is NOT TRUE所选答案: C. This difference set Alfred Wegener, a young geologist, inthinking. He thought the error too great to be reasoned out easily. Wegener himself took measurements and found that since 1869 the island had moved an additional five eighths of a mile. After checking the positions of other arctic land masses, he concluded that all of them were drifting westward at different speeds. From such date, Wegener developed his floating continents theory. He pictured in mind an original supercontinent that hardened out of molten material maki ng up the n ewbor n earth; even tually the mass cracked and broke in to several pieces —the present continents. The continents do seem to fit together like pieces of a puzzle, andfurthermore, some of the mountain ranges of different continents line up rather well, as if the land masses were at one time linked. As convincing as Wegener 's argument appeared, many geologists refused to accept it, and there was heated argument. Exactly how the continents were formed is still a leading geophysical mystery, though today many geophysicists are returning to the continental drift theory. The 1869 map indicated that _____________ . A. Many things contribute to it – smells, sounds, flavors, the very feeling of the air one is breathing. Of course, the natives’ unfamiliar language and behavior contribute to it too. People’s responses to culture shock vary greatly, from excitement and energetic action to withdrawal, depression, physical illness, and hostility. A particular individual might react to culture shock one way one day and another the next. The notion of culture shock calls two useful points to mind. First, most people experience some degree of culture shock when they go to a new country, whether they admit it to themselves and others or not. Culture shock is more a product of the situation of being ina new culture than it is of the traveler’s personal character.Second, culture shock, like other kinds of “shock”’, is normally transitory. It passes with time.Academic analysts of the culture shock idea point out that the experience of culture shock need not be negative. While there may be some unhappiness and unpleasantness along with the confusion and disorientation, the confusion and disorientation are necessary steps in learning about a new culture. If everything in the new place is just like home, no learning will come from being there.Which of the following best summarizes the topic of the passage? A. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words. The power of words, then, lies in their associations – the things they bring up before our minds.Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and effective use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should, therefore, learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar (粗俗).The origin of language is _____________. B. a matter that is hidden or secret问得2 分,满分2 分题33One of the reasons why men invented certain sounds to express thoughts and actions was that _____________. C. they could communicate with each other问题得2 分,满分2 分34The real power of words exists in their ________________. 35Which of the following statements about great writers is NOT TRUE? C. This difference set Alfred Wegener, a young geologist, in thinking. He thought the error too great to be reasoned out easily. Wegener himself tookmeasurements and found that since 1869 the island had moved an additional five eighths of a mile. After checking the positions of other arctic land masses, he concluded that all of them were drifting westward at different speeds. From such date, Wegener developed his floating continents theory. He pictured in mind an original supercontinent that hardened out of molten material making up the newborn earth; eventually the mass cracked and broke into several pieces – the present continents. The continents do seem to fit together like pieces of a puzzle, and furthermore, some of themountain ranges of different continents line up rather well, as if the land masses were at one time linked. As convincing as Wegener’s argument appeared, many geologists refused to accept it, and there was heated argument. Exactly how the continents were formed is still a leading geophysical mystery, though today many geophysicists are returning to the continental drift theory. The 1869 map indicated that ______________.
