Watch a video about Argumentative essay and write a composition based on the following instructions: Education has always been a big concern of our society. Please write an argumentative essay of about 300 words On Fabricating Academic Credentials. You need to describe the current situation and give your own opinions. Nowadays, education has been taken a lot of concerns by citizens. Better education means a better job. Tremendous attention on education promotes the flourish of the science and technology. At the same time, Making up Academic Credential which cheating in applying for a job by pretending to have a high level in education is more and more. But it is extremely wrong. First of all, it is unfair to the students who acquired the academic credential by fairly a long hard work. That will break their hearts when they lose competitiveness in applying and promoting because of the 'cheaters'. The opportunism of some person is bound to result in unfair treatment by others. There is one more point, whether a copycat is a person or a school is suspected of academic fraud, it will have a bad impact on their own image. Besides, Fabricating Academic Credential is expressly prohibited by The Criminal Law. According to article 180, that may be sentenced three to ten years imprisonment. The last but not the least, the country for scientific research is subsidized, academic fraud is undoubtedly wasting research funds and research resources, but also the country's money. Finally, Fabricating Academic Credential destroys the healthydevelopment of the academic environment, contradicts with the spirit of academic research, is not conductive to the innovation of the whole academic community, and hinders the progress of scientific research technology. The passage of time makes quite a few contents of the art of war lose its original luster. However, as a masterpiece of theory, the book reveals some general laws of war, which still shines with the brilliance of truth.First of all, The Art of War proposed the importance of homeopathy which tells us to have a good look at the situation around, while objective conditions interact with each other. Just like a boat against the current can never really go far, only by following the trend of times can we give full play to gain a success. There is one more point, it is provided there will be no danger in a hundred battles, if you recognize yourself and your enemy. This prevailing saying was first put forward in The Art of War by Sun Tzu. When you know yourself and the others, you can make the best use of your resources to create the best environment. There is a saying called that the market is like a battlefield, which means a successful businessman would penetrate the market and know about the pros and cons of himself. Finally, for contemporary youth, employment is the mostbrutal thing while the war is distant, but the competition is not. In fact, The Art of War contains many skills. Know yourself and know your enemy. Only when you understand you own advantages can you have the confidence to win.In conclusion, The Art of War is not only an excellent book of war, but also a book containing many principles of life.。

If I were to make a choice between them, I would rather choose the latter Anyway, it's better to live than not to live at all."A lively discussion followed. A banker, who was then younger and more nervous than the lawyer, suddenly lost his temper and cried out, "It's a lie. I bet you two million .You wouldn't stick in a cell even for five years.""If you mean it," replied the young lawyer, "I betI'll stay there longer; make it fifteen instead of five.""Fifteen! Done!" cried the banker. "Gentleman, I bet you two millions.""Agreed. Two millions for my freedom," said the lawyer. So this wild, ridiculous bet came to pass. The banker could not hide his excitement During supper he said to the lawyer jokingly, "Come to your senses, young man, before it's too late. Two millions are nothing to me, but you stand to lose three or four of the best years of your life. I say three or four because you'll never stick it out any longer Don't forget that voluntary imprisonment is much harder to put up with than a enforced one. The idea that you have the right to free yourself any moment will poison your life in the cell. I pity you."And now the banker, pacing from comer to comer, recalled all this and asked himself, "Why did I make this bet? What's the good? The lawyer lost fifteen years of hi life and I threw away two millions. Will it convince people that capital punishment is worse or better than imprisonment for life? No, no! Rubbish! It is a very common belief that the problems of the population explosion are caused mainly by poor people living in poor countries who do not know enough to limit their reproduction. This is not true. The actual number of people in an area is not as important as the effect they have on nature. Developing countries do have an effect on their environment, but it is the populations of richer countries that have a far greater impact on the earth as a whole. For example, tropical forests are known to be essential to the balance of nature, yet we are destroying them at a great rate. They are being cleared not to benefit the natives of that country, but to satisfy the needs of rich countries. Central American forests are being destroyed for grassland to make pet food in the United States cheaper; in Papua slew Guinea, forests are destroyed to supply cheaper cardboard packaging for Japanese electronicproducts; in Burma and Thailand, forests have been destroyed to produce more attractive furniture in Singapore and Hong Kong. Therefore, a rich person living thousands of miles away may cause more tropical forest destruction than a poor person living in the forest itself. In short, it is everybody's duty to safeguard the future of mankind—not only through population control, but by being more aware of the effect his actions have on nature. Nature is both fragile and powerful. It is very easily destroyed; on the other hand, it can easily destroy its most dangerous enemy—man.31.According to the first paragraph, people usually believe that .A.poor people in poor countries contribute to the imbalance of natureB. rich people know how to protect the environment by taking actionsC. people in poor areas know a lot about the birth controlD. rich people in rich countries have done a lot to balance nature32. In the author's opinion, __.A. developing countries should be responsible for environmental problemsB. overpopulation in the world is created by the developed countriesC. rich countries exercise worse influence on environment than poor countriesD. all countries should bring the population growth under control33. The purpose of the second paragraph is mainly to illustrate __.A. how the forests in the U. S. are being destroyedB. which countries are the victims of the imbalance of natureC.what Japan has done to develop its own economyD. how South Asian countries make quality furniture34. Nature is very easily destroyed by __.A. rich peopleB. poor peopleC. natural disastersD. mankind35. The topic of the passage is that __.A.the control of population is essential to the development of a nationB.natural resources are important to the economic development of a countryC.awareness of the effects of man's actions is as important as population controlD. developed countries should do more to protect natural environment on the earth四、单词拼写题(每题 1 分,共30 分)请根据词类将下列汉语单词译成英语。

The federal government is composed of three distinct branches: legislative, executive and judicial, whose powers are vested by the U.S. Constitution in the Congress, the President, and the federal courts, including the Supreme Court, respectively. The powers and duties of these branches are further defined by acts of Congress, including the creation of executive departments and courts inferior to the Supreme Court.6. Social Intercourse is sometimes named Social Interaction Customs. Broadly, it refers to social rules and routines which make interaction smooth and which tend to vary with cultures. So miscommunication is quite frequent across cultures. Different cultures have different social customs regarding greetings and farewells, invitations and responses, appointments and visiting, and compliments and responses.7. Teacher-student RelationshipsTeacher-student relationships are also very different due to distinct cultural values. For instance, the east prefers a hierarchical order as opposed to the equality emphasized in the west and this is visible in classroom teaching: the eastern style is teacher-centered and the teacher-talking-time is privileged, while the western style is student-centered and the student-talking-time is emphasized. For instance, due to different cultural values - individualism versus collectivism - in the west, one has power to choose and shape individual relationships while, in the east, one is subject to group harmony. Likewise, in the west, equality and assertiveness are valued in both educational and business contexts, while, in the east, conformity and hierarchy are cherished.8. American EducationIn the United States elementary education begins at the age of six. Classes of students are divided into twelve academic levels called grades. Generally, one academic year (from September through June) is required to complete each grade. In some school systems, elementary school includes grades one through eight. The next four years are called high school. In other school systems, there are three divisions, elementary school (grades one through six), junior high school (grades seven through nine), and senior high school (grades ten through twelve). The students go to high school automatically after-finishing their elementary school education. There is no entrance exam. In some lower grade classes they actually go into the class during a lesson and help the teachers with plays and class reading, and most schools have highly successful Parent=Teacher Associations. In high school, subject matter becomes more specialized. English classes stress grammar and literature. Social studies are split into separate courses in American history, American government, and European history, Algebra, geometry, and trigonometry are offered. High school students usually take a one-year general science course, then more detailed courses in biology, chemistry, and physics. Most high school students study a foreign language usually Latin, French, Spanish, or German. Courses in music, art, and physical education are often required. The high school student's day may be divided into nine periods: five for academic subjects, one session for physical education, a lunch period, and two study periods. The study periods may be used for visiting the library or participating in an extracurricular activity such as the school orchestra, newspaper staff, or math club. For a long time, America has led the world in higher, education, quantitatively: at least. The aggregate number of U.S. institutions of higher education is, at last count, 3,280. In American colleges and universities, a vast array of subjects is offered. The student can sample different fields of knowledge, but he usually majors in one field during last two years of college. If he wishes, he may obtain professional training at the undergraduate level. Some students complete college in less than four years by at- tending summer sessions. College grades, from highest to lowest, run A, B, C, D, F. An F is a failing grade; if a student receives an F in a particular course, he does not get credit for having taken the course. College students must maintain at least a low C average in order to remain in school.American universities offer three main categories of graduate degrees. In most fields of specialization, a master's degree can be earned by one or two academic years of study beyond the bachelor's degree. A Ph. D. degree (doctor of philosophy) usually takes at least three years beyond the master's. To earn a Ph. D. in almost any field, the student must generally pass oral and written examinations in his specialty, produce a longresearch paper which makes an original contribution to his field of study, and pass reading examinations in one or two foreign languages.
The ocean, as an indispensable part of our world, buffers our weather, and provides us with food and many of modern medicines. However, we just ignored (didn’t give enough attention to) the connecti vity between the ocean and human sphere. Only until recently, have the team led by marine conservation biologist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols started to explore the connection between human minds and the ocean from multidisciplinary perspectives. They put forward a new research field—neuroconservation, which led to a revolution in marine science.Dr. Wally Broecker, a famous oceanographer, called the phenomenon of deep water circulation “Ocean Conveyor Belt”. This statement is an oversimplification of a complex process. Dr. Susan Lozier from Duke University overwhelmed the idea about ocean overturning after considering/weighing different pieces of evidence. Whatever the outcome would be, there is no doubt that the ocean holds our planet tightly. We have to abandon the old notion and try to protect the ocean from a new perspective.2AThe ocean is the cradle of life. Therefore, the study of marine ecology is not only conducive to the survival of the conservation of biological environment, and is directly related to the development and utilization of marine living resources. Ocean researchers find that marine microbes play animportant role in maintaining the oxygen and carbon dioxide balance in the Earth's atmosphere; sunscreens made of algae can be used in skin care industry; a natural mechanism for iron fertilization is helpful to solve iron deficiency; mass catching of fish for obtaining oil poses risks for extinction of the overfished species; untreated wastewater or sewage which flow into the sea transmits human pathogen to marine corals. These are path-breaking findings in marine science. Researchers are going on various marine biology issues such as oil spills in marine water, ability of some marine species to change their sex and synthesis of renewable energy source. If it is feasible to obtain biofuel from seaweed in the future, it will be a priceless contribution for solving energy crisis of human beings.

P5 Passage 1(英译汉)Following is the speech by Hong Kong Commissioner for Tourism, Ms Margaret Fong, at the luncheon for the travel trade in Mumbai, India:Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,I am delighted to join today's luncheon for our travel trade partners from India and Hong Kong.To most of us in Hong Kong, Mumbai is not unfamiliar. The city is synonymous with the "Film City of India". Bollywood is one of the largest centres of film production in the world and the movies find a ready market in Hong Kong.Several months ago, when I was attending an international conference on movies' impact on tourism in Hong Kong, I told the audience that movies, like travelling, allow one to take a snapshot of a different way of life. Indeed, both films and tourism appeal to our emotion, stimulate our imagination and indulge our fantasies. They are the true "dream factories".As tourism operators, we work to make our clients' dreams come true. We help them live their fantasies during their travel, experiencing the magic first hand.Last year, Hong Kong received 29.5 million visitors. That means some 29.5 million people from all over the world have chosen to live their dreams in Hong Kong. And why?As Asia's world city, Hong Kong is a widely acclaimed tourist destination known for its international outlook, sophistication and diversity. We are the region's aviation hub with flight connections to some 150 cities, including major cities in India. We operate a liberal visa regime where the citizens of 170 countries/ territories can enter Hong Kong without a visa. This of course applies to Indian nationals who enjoy 14 days of visa-free access. Such travel convenience speaks for our desire to welcome friends from round the world to make Hong Kong your home or home away from home.To make Hong Kong fun and appealing, we have attractions that meet the needs of every visitor. For families, we have our two flagship theme parks, the Ocean Park and Disneyland; the spectacular Ngong Ping 360 cable car; and the world-famous Madame Tussads. And we must not forget, of course, our varied shopping and dining scenes which Hong Kong is renowned for.

Chlorophyll is the most important pigment related to photosynthesis. Chlorophyll is actually present in all photosynthetic organisms. In 1899, an Italian scientist developed a simple but accurate method of determining chlorophyll levels. Since 1950s, scientists have quantified chlorophyll by collecting and analyzing water samples to measure concentrations of chlorophyll pigment. Starting in the 1970s, we have also used satellite measurements of the intensity of the ocean's green color to do the same with much greater spatial coverage. Scientists in the modern era have determined the specific quantitative relationship between the depth and the amount of chlorophyll with laboratory analysis of water from the same column. Thus it can be seen that we have more than 100 years of chlorophyll data in the ocean, which is no small feat.
The sea is suffering. The evidence abounds. It becomes acid, making marine life difficult. The dearth of some species will disrupt the food chain, which will in turn destabilize the entire ecosystem. The coral reefs, as the rainforests of the sea, are affected by overfishing, overheating, ocean acidification, etc. Most of them are therefore gravely endangered. Global warming causes oceans to warm up and glaciers to melt, which will raise the sea level and endanger the inhabitants of coastal areas. Humans inflict too many stresses on marine ecosystem, which may permanently change the ocean. For humans, each of these changes is a catastrophe. It is not wise for us to sit back or take it for minor distractions. Conversely, it is high time we did something to put matters right. Fishing subsidies should be abolished and fishing quotas be made transferable in some cases. We must develop effective strategies before it may be too late.
