Unit 8 Coping with an Educational Problem
Part I Pre-reading Task Listen to the recording two or three times and then think over the following questions: 1. What was the teacher's purpose in asking his class the riddle? 2. What can you learn about Little Geoffrey from his answer to the riddle? Was he used to trying to think clearly? Had he formed the habit of making good use of his brain? 3. Is the story related to the theme of the unit — coping with an educational problem? In what way?
To drive this message home to such young Americans, I have a humble suggestion: a movie, or TV series, dramatizing just how difficult it was for this country to get where it is — and how easily it could all be lost. I offer the following fable. As the story opens, our hero, Kevin Hanley 1990, a 17-year-old high school senior, is sitting in his room, feeling bitter. His parents insist he study for his European history test. He wants to go shopping for headphones for his portable CD player. The book he is forced to read — The Wealth of Nations — puts him to sleep. Kevin dreams it is 1835, and he is his own great-great-great-grandfather at 17, a peasant in County Kerry, Ireland. He lives in a small hut and sleeps next to a pig. He is always hungry and must search for food. His greatest wish is to learn to read and write so he might get a job as a clerk. With steady wages, he would be able to feed himself and help his family. But Hanley's poverty allows no leisure for such luxuries as going to school. Without education and money, he is powerless. His only hope lies in his children. If they are educated, they will have a better life.

Schools should build a free environment and offer support for teachers and students to implement their ideas. Teachers should teach according to students’ aptitude and pay attention to students’ true needs. Students should figure out what their interests are and try to realize what they really want to do.2) I believe that creativity is not a state of being, but, rather, is a personal characteristic on a continuum from low to high. You can move your creativity up the scale by nurturing it. Furthermore, creative activity isn’t only the creation of art. Everyone who has ever found a solution to a problem has employed creativity. Most of the time, these efforts don’t require high levels of creativity. People high on the continuum of creativity have learned to take an active role in developing it by constantly finding out problems for further exploration. They routinely exercise their creativity. The key is that they keep working even when they feel that they will never find a solution. The true magic in creativity lies in the fact that the solutions do come.Language in Use4.1) genuine2) discipline3) facilitate4) talents5) motivate6) appetite7) dynamic8) acquires9) flourished10) ambition5.1) admitted to2) working on3) pass through4) thrown out5) end up6) do with6.a group of students (一群学生)a flock of sheep (一群羊)a ray of hope (一线希望)a bunch of flowers (一束花)a heap of earth (一堆泥土)a packet of cigarettes (一包烟)1) a body of2) a block of3) a chain of4) a ray of5) a gust of6) a mountain of7) a herd of8) a string of9) a bunch of10) a packet of7.1) adjective + noun-ed r osy-cheeked, good-tempered, warm-hearted2) adverb + verb-ed so-called, newly-built, well-known3) adjective + verb-ing long-standing, high-performing, funny-looking4) noun + adjective duty-free, snow-white, life-long5) adjective + noun part-time, first-class, mid-term6) noun + verb-ed hand-painted, self-centered, snow-covered7) noun + verb-ing time-consuming, world-shaking, English-speaking8) a + b + c hand-in-hand, heart-to-heart, three-year-old1) easy-going2) heart-broken3) self-confident4) poverty-stricken5) up-to-date6) narrow-minded7) long-distance8) well-educated8.Reference translation1) 我认为创造性是获得有价值的创意的过程。

综合英语教程听写答案(第一册)8-15单元

综合英语教程听写答案(第一册)8-15单元Script (Book One)Unit 8 The Message Behind the SmileSmiling is one of the basic human emotional expressions. People smile to look happy and attractive, to please others, or to conceal negative emotions. Teachers may smile to encourage their students while they are trying to work out difficult problems. Smiling also has a function in social communication. Typically people are expected to smile during a friendly conversation. Finally, people of different sexes, ages and cultures smile in different way with different meanings.Unit 9 SnakeYesterday afternoon I went to the seacoast. I had a wonderful time sitting in the bright sunshine and reading a book. When I finally got up to come back, daylight had already begun to fade, which indicated that dusk had quietly set in without my knowing it.On my way home I came upon a puzzling sight. Thousands of ants were hurrying along the pavement. “Where have all these insects c ome from?”I thought. I decided to do some detective work to solve the mystery. Carefully looking around me, I noticed a small hole in the ground. More and more ants were coming out of it. It seemed to me that they were being forced to migrate from their ho me to look for a new hideaway. “Who are their enemies?” I wondered.Unit 10 The Risks of LifeWe have different kinds of food to eat. But we don’t seem to pay enough attention to how the food we eat is related to our disease patterns. An inappropriate diet, especially in our early life, may result in some hidden health problems. By the time they become evident, a lot of damage may have already been done to our health. On the other hand, it is very hard to find out exactly what we need. There is no certain way of anticipating who will get what disease, and when. However, evidence shows that people who always eat high-fat food are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, heart disease, and clogged arteries. So it does make sense for us to choose our food wisely and eat many different kinds of food to achieve a balance.Unit 11 Medicine and HealthThese years, the tobacco industry is having a tough time, at least in America and most of the European countries. “No Smoking” signs have been put up almost eve rywhere. In addition, public opinion is getting more and more hostile to the bad habit of smoking. It is widely accepted that cigarette smoking is as bad as a drug addition. Governments are happy to work with the public in targeting the tobacco companies. In some countries, courts have even ordered the tobacco companies to pay huge amounts of money to smoking victims. Because of this unfavorablesituation, the tobacco companies have begun to turn their attention to the developing countries, trying to find new markets in less hostile areas.Unit 12 The TransactionLike a landscape photographer, a writer is confronted with a huge chunk of scenery; like the photographer, the writer chooses what she will focus on, which piece she will narrow down to and depict with care and grace. Once that selection is made, the photographer begins to explore the details of the new scene hehas framed and the writer begins to explore the specifics of the narrowed topic. The end result is a highly detailed view of one aspect of a landscape or, for the writer, one area of knowledge of one special experience.Unit 13 Words Can Give You PowerYour vocabulary determines your world in many ways. It determines if you are able to express and understand complete thoughts. It gives you a tool with which to think and it leads you to success. This answers why you should improve your vocabulary. If you are going to learn a new word, that word is most likely to stay with you if you put it into context. For instance, if you are going to learn th e word, “synonymous,” reading it and its definition ten times with your eyes half closed is almost useless because the word cannot become active. But the sentence “Lack ofeducation is not synonymous with lack of intelligence”is much more impressive.Unit 14 People Who Changed the Shape of Our WorldThe computer is a wonderful machine. Ever since it was invented six decades ago, the computer has been developed rapidly and used widely. It helps a teacher to design test papers, a doctor to diagnose diseases, and a policeman to identify criminals. The computer is also used in banks, department stores, airlines, companies and automobile factories. All types of information can be computerized to solve different problems. The computer has a great impact on most industries and helps improve the quality of our lives.Unit 15 The Rocking-Horse WinnerMy name is Maria and I’m thirteen years old. I live with my family in a small village in Nigeria. I go to Westland School in thenext village five miles away. It is a small school for both boys and girls. I am in year six and my brother Tom is in year eight. My favorite subjects are science, math and French although I am not good at languages. Each day we have to get up early to walk to our school. I enjoy school, but nothing can beat playing and working at home!。

However, I always like to study on my own, with good reasons. First, I feel that I can concentrate better when I study alone. When I have to work together with other people, I often get distracted and more often than not, I end up chatting with them without completing the task at hand. Second, when I study on my own, I can work at my own pace, choosing to spend more time on certain difficult sections and less time on less challenging parts. I can also check my class notes or reference books whenever I feel the need to. One final good advantage of studying alone is that unlike group work, self study is not restricted by time and space. In other words, if I feel like studying, I can do so at any time and anywhere. (146 words)I like to study in a groupAccording to a recent study, students who study together by discussing homework and problems usually score higher than those who work on their own. I am happy to hear that because I like to study in a group. I think we can reinforce our understanding of what we have learned in class by asking each other questions. Besides, it is always enjoyable working with someone else. A discussion on questions we don’t understandvery well will help clear up any possibl e confusion. Last but not least, we should not ignore the importance of cooperation in our society. Working with others helps develop our team spirit, which has become essential in this modern world of ours. After all, two heads are always better than one.(125 words)▆Sample Essay for Task 2:College Is Not an Ivory TowerPeople often say that college is an ivory tower and life on campus is cut off from the harsh realities of the real world. College may have been an ivory tower before, but it is not so any more. We college students are under various kinds of pressure. First of all, most of us are burdenedwith a heavy tuition fee, which keeps on increasing every year. So some of us have to work over ten hours every week. Life for those who can get financial help from their parents is not easy either, as they very often have to follow their parents’ advice and take a major they don’t like. Finally those who are about to graduate suffer from a different kind of pressure: hunting for a job. It is no longer easy for a college student to get a decently paid job these days.(134 words)The Answers to Unit 2Enhance Your Language Awareness Section A Useful ExpressionsUseful Expressions from Text A Chinese Equivalencesdon’t know whether to laugh or cry 哭笑不得it is no use doing…做……是没有用的to a certain extent 在某种程度上have a great advantage over sb. 比某人有优势cannot afford to do sth. 负担不起……go to the opposite extreme 走到另一个极端let alone 更别说be fond of doing sth. 喜欢做……it is a pity (that) 遗憾……in my personal opinion 我个人认为be similar to…与……相似It is worth doing 值得做……Useful Expressions from Text B Chinese Equivalenceshave great trouble with…做……很吃力try at all costs to do sth. 不惜任何代价做……rid them of their fear and dislike of books 消除他们对书本的厌恶和恐惧心理do sth. for pleasure 出于乐趣而做……mean every word of it 说话算数(I) Working with Words and Expressions1. I woke up early in the morning, curiously and nervously waiting for the moment to set foot on the campus.I walked with great joy, impressed by the lovely buildings, the old giant trees everywhere throughout the campus, and even more so, by the cool, crisp mountain air that kept hitting my nose. In the central square I stopped for a while, and listened to the music playing on the school’s radio station. Students were happily moving from class to class along the corridors. Professors were smiling broadly and exchanging greetings with students in a friendly manner. All these things reminded me that Ineeded to get used to the “college-ways” of doing things, which are so different from those at high school. On that special day, I really felt a new rhythm of life with a mixed sense of duty and liberty.CET-Oriented StudyListening1、B2、A3、D4、D5、B6、CBanked Cloze(1)E. ignored(2)H. aware(3)L. conducted(4)C. supervisors(5)F. enlightening(6)D. harmonious(7)K. elevate(8)I. budget(9)A. devoted(10)O. fosteringParagraph Translation(翻译参考)The effect of globalization on higher education is surprisingly complex. For higher education, globalization implies the social, economic, and technological forces that shape the realities of the 21st century. These elements include advanced information technology, new ways of thinking about financing higher education, and unprecedented mobility for students and professors. Significantly, the idea of mass access to higher education has meant unprecedented expansion of higher education everywhere. There are about 134 million students in postsecondary education worldwide. These global trends are for the most part inevitable.Unit TestsUnit Test - I1-5: CBCAA6-10: BDDAB11-15: DBCCD16-20: ACDACUnit Test - II1-5: CBDCD(6)G. initial(7)N. contemplated (8)L. range(9)B. appropriate (10)E. instrumental (11)O. mobilization (12)A. cope(13)I. individual (14)D. contributing (15)M. responsibility16-20: BADDB21-25: DBDADU2Textbook StudyListening1)source2)heroes3)bread4)greatest5)relationships6)devotion7)positive8)misunderstandingsText B1)found that social relationships also dramatically influence our mortality rate.thinks social relationships have as much of an impact on mortality as risk factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption, and even more of an impact than physical inactivity and obesity.points out that we exhibit a spontaneous social instinct to make friends from a very early age.2)states that the highest predictor of happiness is good relationships.states friendships are often fluid, dependent on where you live and work —and, interestingly, proximity is the highest indicator of a continuing friendship.believes without face-to-face connection, welose something precious in our quality of interaction —which is why she recommends we focus on regularly doing enjoyable things with our friends.3)states she stays away from people who are negative and drain her energies, and enjoys having friends from different cultures to expand her world instead of relying on one person.says that deeper friendships expand our inner horizons and enhance the quality of our life.WritingLack of Face-to-Face CommunicationNowadays, with the increasing pace of life, lack of face-to-face communication is becoming a problem that is changing the way we live. The reason is our accelerated pace of life and our failure to control it. Meanwhile, people are getting lazier and spoiled by the convenience of modern life. To get back the happy life we used to have, one solution is to spend less time on the computer and put down our cellphones. We need to talk to our family and friends more, instead of sending emails or text messages. Another possible solution is that we shouldspend more time doing things together with loved ones. For example, we could organize parties, visit neighbors, plan family trips, just like in the old times. We should not let social media and electronic devices control us and destroy our way of life.CET-Oriented StudyListening1、D2、B3、C4、B5、B6、D7、C8、DReading Comprehension(1)E(2)B(3)D(4)I(5)H(6)G(7)A(8)F(9)I(10)JParagraph Translation(翻译参考)Being sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life. The beauty about it is that I can always find a song to identify with, whether at a time of happiness, loneliness or sorrow. Some scientists have found that people can boost their mood simply by listening to upbeat music. For instance, I listen to pop music with happy melodies, when I have something to celebrate. When feeling relaxed, I love to lay back and listen to jazz in particular. While I am disturbed by the problems of my study, soft music without lyrics will soothe me and make me concentrate. To me, listening tomusic can fuel my soul and ultimately lead to a better quality of life.Sample 2Everyone has an instinctive understanding of how music interacts with our moods. Some scientists have found that listening to music can improve our moods. Of all types of music I love classical music most because it gives me power and comfort. At a time of happiness, classical music creates such a calming atmosphere that I feel completely at peace. When life disappoints me, however, those masterpieces encourage me and give me strength to recover. Specifically, I love Bach’s music best. Some pieces help me concentrate when I am working. While some other pieces assist me in battling insomnia. Last month, my family saw a news ad for the city marathon and we immediately decided to sign up for it. Our running practice started immediately the next morning. On the day of the marathon, we got to the starting point early enough for the warm-up. At 9 o’clock, lots of runners arrived. Soon, we began to put number tags on our T-shirts. At 9:30, as the starting gun went off, all of us headed out and the long run began. People along the road cheered us on and provided drinking water for us. After 20 miles, all of us slowed down and felt a little tired. Dad, who still led our team, toldus to adjust our breathing and pace. Then later, we started walking and encouraging one another to finish the race. We were so thrilled when we got to the finish, though we didn’t win. Exhausted as we were, we realized that joy and satisfaction come from participation, not from winning the race.Sample 2The most exciting soccer match this year was the final game of our school’s soccer tournament to determine the champion. At the beginning, both teams —the chemistry department and the biology department —put forth supreme defensive performances. Meanwhile, both teams kept seeking chances to score a goal, but neither one got the opportunity. At half-time, the advantage lay with the chemistry department. In the second half, the game opened up and several attractive shots were made. But 15 minutes before the end of the game, the chemistry department team’s forward was shown a red card and sent off for serious foul play. The advantage in numbers enabled the biology department team to play confidently and they finally scored 2 goals in the last 10 minutes. That was a very unexpected but memorable soccer game.CET-Oriented StudyListening1、B2、C3、A4、D5、B6、CBanked Cloze(1)D.anxiety(2)I. dropping(3)N. critical(4)G. cooperate(5)H. greatly(6)F. cautious(7)A. process(8)O. enjoying(9)L. focus(10)B.highParagraph Translation(翻译参考)Table tennis is a sport which gains much popularity and acclaim in China. To manage academic stress, we need to understand that unsatisfactory performance may be the result of absent-mindedness and we should reschedule our time and put more energy into our study. Some students may have other problems, such as financial difficulties. To combat them, they could apply for student loans or possibly find part-time jobs to support themselves. While college students face the obvious social challenges that usually involve leaving one’s entire support structure behind, creating a new social network, dealing with being away from home for the first time and finding less parental support, many students also face social stress.
