2019新人教版高一英语必修三全部课文( 英汉对照)Unit 1 Festivals and CelebrationsWHY DO WE CELEBRATE FESTIVALS我们为什么庆祝节日?Festivals are celebrated all around the world. They have a wide range of origins, such as the seasons of the year, religions, famous figures, and important events. Every festival has its different customs and unique charms. However, no matter how different they may seem, all over the world, the spirit of sharing joy, gratitude, love, or peace is common in all festivals.
Of all the traditional festivals, the harvest festival can be found in almost every culture. This important agricultural festival takes place after all the crops have been gathered in. People celebrate to show that they are grateful for the year’s supply of food. In ancient Egypt, the harvest festival was celebrated during the springtime—the Egyptian harvest season. It featured a parade and a great feast with music, dancing, and sports. Today, in some European countries, people decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit, and get together to celebrate over a meal. During the Mid-Autumn Festival in China, families gather to admire the shining moon and enjoy delicious mooncakes.在所有的传统节日中,丰收节几乎可见于每一种文化之中。

Unit 1 festivals around the world reading课时作业阅读理解(共两节总分30分)第一节阅读下面的短文,从每题所给德四个选项中选出最佳选项。
AStephen Hawking, who spent his career exploring the universe and even experienced weightlessness, is urging the continuation of space exploration---for future generations. The 71-year-old Hawking did not think humans would survive another 1,000 years “without escaping beyond our week planet”.The British scientist made the remarks Tuesday before an audience of doctors, nurses and employees at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he toured a stem cell laboratory that is focused on trying to slow the progression of Lou Gehrig’s disease(渐冻人病).Well-known for his work on black hole and the origins of the universe, Hawking is famous for bringing mysterious physics concepts to the masses through his best-selling books, including A Brief of Time, which sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. Hawking titled his hour-long lecture to Cedars-Sinai employees “A Brief History of Mine”.Hawking was diagnosed with Lo u Gehrig’s disease 50years ago when he was a student at Cambridge University. He recalled how he became sad and at first didn’t see a point in finishing his education. But he continued his studies.Hawking has survived longer than most people with Lou Ge hrig’s disease because few people with Lou Gehrig’s disease live longer than ten years. People have more and more trouble breathing and moving muscles weaken and waste away. What’s worse, there’s no cure. Dr. Robert Baloh, director of Cedars-Sinai’s ALS program said he had no explanation for the physicist’s longevity. Baloh said he has treated patients who lived for 1o years or more. “But 50years is unusual, to say the least,” he said.Despite his diagnosis, Hawking has remained active. In 2017, he floated like an astronaut on the aircraft that create weightlessness. Hawking had some valuable advice. Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Be curious. “However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed in.”1.What do we know about Hawking?A.His book- A Brief History of Mine was a best seller.B.His lecture –A Brief History of Time is about his lifeC.Hawking get Lou Gehrig’s disease when he was in his twenties.D.Hawking has been in a sad situation since he got the disease.2.What does the underlined word longevity in paragraph 5 probably mean?A.His poor healthB. His long lifeC. his mystery diseaseD. His weakening muscle3.What do you think the author’s attitude to Stephen Hawking?A.GratefulB. SupportiveC. EnthusiasticD. RespectfulBSAN FRANCISCO—A phone app in San Francisco gives information about open parking spots. City officials in San Francisco introduced the app to try to reduce traffic jams in the city, but some say it raises safety concerns. In this city, drivers searching for parking spots lead to 30% of all downtown jams, city officials think. Now San Francisco has found a solution --- a phone app for spot seekers that displays information about areas with available spaces. The system, introduced last month, depends on wireless sensors fixed in streets and city garage that can tell within seconds if a spot has opened up.Monique Soltani, a TV reporter, said she and her sister spent 25 minutes on Friday trying to park. “We were praying to the parking god that we’d find a spot,” she said. “I f we had the app, we would not have to pray to the parking god.” But the system could come with serious results. Some people say that drivers searching for parking could end up focusing on their phones, not the road. “It could be really distracting,” sai d Daniel Simons, a professor of psychology at the University of Illinois.City officials recognize the potential problem. They are urging drivers to stop their car before they use the city’s iPone app, or to do so before they leave home. Nathaniel Ford, executive director of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, said safety could actually improve if drivers quickly found a spot instead of circling and getting impatient and annoyed.San Francisco has put sensors into 7,000 parking spots and 12,250 spots in city garages. If spaces in an area open up, the sensors communicate wirelessly with computers that in turn make the information available to app users within a minute, said Mr. Ford, of the transportation agency. On the app, a map shows which blocks have lots of places (blue) and which are full(red).More than 12,000 people have downloaded San Francisco’s app, which is available now only for the iPhone but which city officials say they hope to bring to all similar devices. When it is star ted up, the city’s parking app warns drivers not to use the system while they are driving. But safety advocates said that might not be enough. After all, they say, texting while driving goes against law in California and in many states, but a number of surveys, including one by the Pew Research Center, show that many Americans do it anyway.Elizabeth Stampe, executive director of Walk San Francisco, a pedestrian advocacy group, said she hoped the new parking app would lead to fewer accidents.“It’s a creative idea,” she said. “The safe way for people to use the device is for them to stop their car, which they know they should do. The question is whether they will.”But Ms. Soltani, the TV reporter, said using the app would probably join the group of activities already performed by drivers.“We’re already looking at Google Maps and Facebook on the phone while we drive,” she said. “Aren’t we always looking at something on our phone, or changing the radio, or drinking coffee? You’re always slightly distracted when you’re driving.”4.How do drivers find the parking spots?A.App—computer---sensorsB. Sensors ---computers ----appC. Computers---app---sensorsD. Why don’t you fly and meet me?”My father had just retired after 27 years as a manager for IBM. His job filled his day, his thoughts, his life. While he woke up and took a warm shower, I screamed under a freezing waterfall in Peru. While he tied a tie and put on the same Swiss watch, I rowed a boat across Lake of the Ozarks. My father sees me drifting aimlessly, nothing to show for my 33 years but a passport full of funny stamps. He wants me to settle down, but now I want him to find an adventure. He agrees to travel with me through the national parks. We meet fours weeks later in Rapid City.“What is our first stop?” asks my father.“What time is it?”“Still don’t have a watch?”Less than an hour away is Mount Rushmore. As he stares up at the four Presidents carved in granite(花岗岩), his mouth and eyes open slowly, like those of a little boy.“Unbelievable,” he says, “How was this done?”A film in the information center show sculptor Gutzon Borglum devoted 14 years to the sculpture and then left the final touches to his son.We stare up and I ask myself, Would I ever devote my life to anything? No directions, no goals. Now I hear them in my own.The next day we’re at Yellowstone National Park, where we have a picnic.“Did you ever travel with your dad?” I as k.“Only once,” he says. “I never spoke much with my father. We loved each other---buy never said it. Whatever he could give me, he gave.”The last sentence---it’s probably the same thing I’d say about my father.
