(A)Part I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the co rresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.

Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:Scientists find that hard-working people live longer than average men and women. Career women are healthier than housew ives. Evidence shows that the jobless are in poorer health than jobholders. An investigation shows that whenever the unemploy ment rate increases by 1 %, the death rate increases by 2%. All this comes down to one point, work is helpful to health. Why is work good for health? It' is because work keeps people busy away from loneliness. Researches show that people f eel unhappy, worried and lonely when they have nothing to do. Instead, the happiest are those who are busy. (76) Many high achievers who love their careers feel that they are happiest when they are working hard. Work serves as a bridge between man and reality.By work people come into contact with each other. By collective activity they find friendship and warmth. This is helpful to health. The loss of work means the loss of everything. It affects man spiritually and makes him ill.Besides, work gives one a sense of fulfillment and a sense of achievement. Work makes one feel his value and status in society. When a writer finishes his writing or a doctor successfully operates on a patient or a teacher sees his students grow, t hey are happy beyond words.(77)From the above we can come to the conclusion that the more you work the happier and healthier you will be. Let us work hard and study hard and live a happy and healthy life.1. The underlined word “average”in Paragraph 1 means __________.【答案】C。

And now a big research study confirms it.Professor Barry Wellman’s term is “networked individualism”. It’s not the easiest concept to grasp. I n fact, the words seem to contradict each other. How can we be individualistic and networked at the sa me time? You need other people for network. Here’s what he m eans. Until the internet and e-mail came along, our social network involved flesh-a nd-blood relatives, friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Some of the interaction was by phone, but it was s till voice to voice, person to person in real life. But the latest study confirms that for a lot of people, electronic interaction through the computer has replaced a great deal of social activities and person-to-person interaction. Some people worry that the In ternet is turning us into isolated people who shut out other people in favor of a false world on computer screensTo the contrary, the study discovered that the Internet connects us with more real people than expec ted- helpful people who can give advice on careers, medical problems, raising children, and choosing a s chool or college. About 60 million Americans told the researchers that the Internet plays an important or crucial role in helping them deal with major life decisions. So we network individuals are pretty tricky: we’re keeping more to ourselves, whil e at the same tim e reaching out to more people, all with just the click of a computer mouse!44. The term “networked individualism” is used to refer to ________.A the way that modern people communicate on the InternetB a social activity popular with North AmericansC the contradiction within network communicationD a newly invented Internet software45. With the wide use of Internet, some people fear that____.A people will become isolatedB interpersonal relation will disappearC people will be controlled by networkD there will be too many social activities46. According to the latest research, electronic interaction through computer is ______.A highly rewardingB a waste of timeC only informativeD an escape from social life47. Why does the writer say network individuals are tricky?A Because they sometimes play tricks on people.B Because they refuse person-to-person communication.C Because they can stay alone while remaining sociable.D Because they feel puzzled when communicating with each other.Passage Four“I love you Bob.”“I love you too, Nancy.” it was 2 a.m., and I was hearing my parents’ voices t hrough the thin wall separating my bedroom from theirs. She copied their actions and way of life — eating plants and getting down on her hands and knees to walk the way a gorilla does. It was a new relationship.Diane Fossey was murdered in Rwanda in 1985 and her story was made into the popular film Gorillas in the Mist. It was a long way from King Kong, which is about a gorilla as a monster (a frightening animal), and helped to show a new idea: the real monster is man, while the gorilla is to be admired.Today there are thought to be around 48,000 lowland gorillas and maybe 400—450 mountain gorillas in the wild. From the Congo in West Africa, to Rwanda and Uganda further east, they are endangered by hunting and by the cutting down of their forest homes. Some time ago, I found in my letterbox a little magazine from the World Wide Fund for Nature. It had two photos side by side. One was of a young gorilla. “This is a species of mammal(哺乳类动物),” said the words below it. “It is being destroyed by man. We must save it for our own good.” The other photo showed a human baby. The words also read,“This is a species of mammal,” but then went on:“It is the most destructive(破坏性的) on earth. We must retrain it for its own good.”1.The text mainly talks about _____.A. Diane FosseyB. the gorillas in RwandaC. the protection of the gorillasD. the film Gorillas in the Mist2.We can learn from the text that _____.A.Gorillas in the mist was based Fossey‘s experiencesB.Lowland gorillas live longer than mountain gorillasC. King Kong showed us that a gorilla is admirableD. Diane Fossey was murdered by a gorilla3.What message can we get from the two photos in the magazine?A.Gorillas are man‘s close friends.B.Both man and the gorilla need to be saved.C.Young gorillas are as lovely as human babies.D. Man should live peacefully with the gorilla.(4)Like many lovers of books, Mary and her husband, Richard Goldman, seldom walked past a bookstore without stopping to look inside. They often talked of opening their own store one day. When Mary was hospitalized with heart trouble in 1989, they decided it was time to get serious. Richard, who worked for a business company, was eager to work for himself, and Mary needed to slow down from her demanding job. They started by talking to bookstore owners and researching the industry. “We knew it had to be a specialty store because we couldn‘t match the big chains dollarfor dollar,” says Mary. One figure caught her attention: She’d read somewhere that roughly 20 percent of books sold were mysteries (推理小说), and many buyers spent more $300 a year on books. She and Richard were themselves mystery readers. On Halloween 1992, they opened the Mystery Lovers Bookshop and Café near their home. With three children in college, the couple could not spend all the family ‘s money to start a shop. To cover the $100,000 cost, they drew some of their savings, borrowed from relatives and from an bank. The store merely broke even in its first year, with only $120,000 in sales. But Mary was always coming up with new ways to attract customers. The shop had a coffee bar and it offered gifts to mystery lovers and served dinners for book clubs that met in the store. She also invited dozens of writers to discuss their stories.Today Mystery Lovers makes sales of about $420,000 a year. After paying taxes, business costs and the six part-time sales clerks, Richard and Mary together earn about $34,000.“The job you love may not go hand in hand with a million-dollar income,” says Richard. “This has always been about an enjoyable life for ourselves, not about making a lot of money.”1.When Mary was in hospital, the couple realized that ____.A.they had to put their plan into practiceB.health was more important than wealthC.heart trouble was a serious illnessD.they both needed to stop working2.After Mary got well from her illness they began _____.A.to study industrial managementB.to buy and read more mystery booksC.to do market research on book businessD.to work harder to save money for the bookstore3.How did their bookstore do in the first year?A.They had to borrow money to keep it going.B.They made just enough to cover all the costs.C.They succeeded in earning a lot of money.D.They failed though they worked hard.4.According to Richard, the main purpose of running the bookstore is _____.A. to pay for their children‘s educationB. to get to know more writersC. to set up more bookstoresD. to do what they like to do精品文档资料,适用于企业管理从业者,供大家参考,提高大家的办公效率。

Prices are rising continuously. This condition is termed one of inflation; the money supply is becoming inflated so that each unit of it becomes less valuable. People have grown accustomed in recent years to higher and higher rate of inflation. What could be bought ten years ago for one dollar now costs well over two dollars? Present indications are that this rate of inflation is tending to rise rather than to fall. If in the real world our money incomes go up at the same rate as prices.0ne might think that inflation does not matter. But it does. When money is losing value it lacks one of the qualities of good money—stability of value. It is no longer acceptable as a store of value; and it becomes an unsuitable standard of deferred payments. We didn’t have a lot of clothes or toys, but my mother always made sure we had enough to eat.Her love and devotion for my brother and me made our lack of material possessionsseem insignificant. I grew up poor in material things but rich in love.Since my father was never around long enough to teach me physical things or to playgames with me, I didn’t succeed in any competitive sport. My mother did her best as asubstitute(替代),throwing ball with me in the lot(空地)behind our house, but it wasn’t the same. They impose their own living conditions on the people who inhabit them. City—dwellers are obliged by their environment to adopt a wholly unnatural way of life. They lose touch with the land and rhythm of nature. It is possible to live such an air-conditioned existence in a large city that you are barely conscious of the seasons. A few flowers in a public park (if you have the time to visit it) may remind you that it is spring or summer. A few leaves clinging to the pavement may remind you that it is autumn. Beyond that, what is going on in nature seems totally irrelevant. All the simple good things of life like sunshine and fresh air are at a premium(奇缺的,十分需要的). Tall buildings blot out the sun.Traffic fumes pollute the atmosphere.Even the distinction between day and night is lost. The flow of traffic goes on unceasingly and the noise never stops.1. So he had to learn many humble skills in order to make his living in his youth. In fact he did all sorts of simple jobs and he did them well. And he learnt about music, which was later to become very important to him. However, as we all know, hard simple work need notto be a bad training for his later life. By the time he was thirty. With help from his tutor, Lao Dan, Confucius had become a respected teacher. He had mastered the "six ancient skills". So he started to become famous. As he became well-known, many states wanted him to be a senior official for them. But Confucius refused their offers and was happy to work on his ideas in his hometown of Qufu. In fact, he did not accept high office until he was over fifty years of age, which was quite old in those days.1. Confucius didn't accept high office until he was .A. almost fifty years oldB. about fifty years oldC. sixty years oldD. over fifty years oldPassage 4A survey has shown that people have stopped believing both the media and politicians. A similar survey carried out 5 years ago showed that 50% of people thought that what politicians said wasusually not true, and that 35% of people thought that what they saw on the television or read in newspapers was not true. Now both those figures have increased sharply, to 80% of people not believing politicians and 70% not believing the television or newspapers. Experts think that these figures are not going to come down in the near future.Stories about politicians and journalists taking money from businessmen have caused the public to stop trusting them. Also politicians keep making promises that they do not keep. Mr. Smith of York said, ‘When the politicians make new laws, hey only help their friends, not people like me’. Mrs. Marley of Leeds said,’ the newspapers and television are not interested in what is true; they are only interested in money for advertising.’It has got worse recently as more people can get news from the Internet and learn if the journalists and politicians are telling the truth or not. What can our politicians and journalists do? The only answer is to be more hones.1.The number of people believing politicians and journalists has__________.A.increasedB.not changedC.decreased2.Experts think this problem____________.A.will get better soonB.will not get better soonC.will get worse soon3.Stories say businessmen give money to ___________.A.politiciansB.politicians and journalistsC.journalists4.Mr. Smith thinks politicians make laws_____________.A.to help their friendsB.to help himC.to help everybody5.People can now check stories using _____________.A.the newspapersB.the televisionC.the InternetPassage 5No work or lack of work is becoming a major social problem in the world. It is part of our daily routine as it takes up one half of our waking life. If we don’t have work or if we have unsatisfactory work, then our lives are likely to be miserable and empty. It is in this respect that certain industrialized countries now have a particular problem. Out of a working population of about 25 million, at least 3 million are unemployed. This represents just under 10%of the workforce. It is a terrible waste. Related to the problems mentioned above is the difficulty of finding a good job worthy of one's qualifications. Only a small minority of people ever make it to university. Therefore only a very small percentage of people have the opportunity to qualify for the top jobs or for truly professional careers. Yet increasingly, more and more graduates fail to find work. For many of us who have always enjoyed having a satisfying job, it is hard to imagine the misery of those who are permanently out of work. Long term unemployment is similar to a disease. The unemployed find it difficult to find accommodation or to pay for accommodation, and without an address, it is difficult to claim benefits. The problems of unpleasant work or no work are likely to get worse before they get better. It will be something that the next century in particular must take very seriously.1. Work is part of our daily routine because it takes up_______.A. one half of our liveB. one third of our lifeC. one half of our working hoursD. one half of our waking life2. In certain industrialized countries, out of a working population of about 25 million, ________.A. at least 3 million are unemployedB. more than 3 million are unemployedC. one third of 25 million are unemployedD. on fourth of 25 million are unemployed3. According to the passage, it is ________.A. easy for graduates to find workB. difficult for more and more graduates to find work。
