Farewell to Arms

A Farewell to Arms"Farewell to Arms" makes people understand that war is a slaughterhouse. We would never seen something golory and wonderful. In the complex new century, we can get many beneficial enlightenment and reference from the war.War is an integral part of human history which help us to interpreting history, understanding of the human development track. In the story,Haimingwei shouwed us a changing process of people's attitude toward the war, which destoryed not only love but also humanity. At first, people were devoted to the war, later they became doubted and then got a disgusted and indifferent at last.It showed usthe mental attitude of the "confused generation" after the war 2.They hated the but could not stop it,they could not see any hope but still did not want to give up.Haimingwei contrasted the cruelty of war with the personal happiness. He described how Frederic and Catherine developed a pure and sincere relationship and how this beautiful love was destoryed by the cruel war. Here personal happiness symbolized the beautiful and harmonious life. And the combination of numerrous people's happiness is the goal of human tragedy so as to reach a further meaning.A farewell to arms, either an enemy prisoner, or the prisoner of love. I'm not good at self-protection, it is a giving up of self-protection. Just asa database of life there was no need to enter with the password, you can open at any time all program, you can read all the documents. I said prisoner is captured in this sense. When I put yourself into the sun when Hou, I understand that he could no longer be disguised, concealed the days of one mind on the matter of disturbed. When I realized that resist the helpless, how much time irreversible, how many memories gradually fade from the heart. After all, is a prisoner can not keep the hurt, is to have enough courage to give up hope, we must endure to survive all the pressure. Originally, in the personal space, can be immersed in its own illusions, out from the dust inside the virtual flowers. while a person is to give up self-protection can not even deceive ourselves, and only continue to purify the inner world.War is an inevitable topic in the modern world.Human created war with the arms they invented."A farewell to Arms " might just be a beautiful hope of hunman being. However, people are also the victims of war and their anti-war passions are strong and widespread.Death is a inevitable result of war, just as the death of Catherine.Although she did not die on the battlefiled,it was still the war that caused her death. From the whole story to see, Haimingwei, is to write the people whom with the destruction of human natural love, destruction from the war into suspicion to disgust and indifferent to the process, reflects the first world war, belief crisis cynicism of the "lost generation" of the spirit.。

A Farewell to Arms告别武器英语阅读报告800+字

Peace First---A Farewell to Arms We love peace and don't like war. We love a world full of flowers, not a world full of smoke and crying. But in this world, there are often wars. Local wars have been going on, such as the war between Ukraine and Russia. In China, it's so peaceful that I have no concept of war. I can't even imagine what the war would look like or what the consequences would be.A few days ago, I read a book titled A Farewell to Arms. It gave me a whole new perspective on war.The author of this novel is Ernest Miller Hemingway. He is a famous American writer, the most important representative of the "Lost Generation" in America in the 1920s. He had a wide range of interests, which had an important influence on his writing and the formation of his character. He served in two world wars. In World War I, he fought in Italy and lived in Paris as a journalist for a long time after the war. During these days, he wrote many literary works. During the Second World War, he went to Spain and China to report on the war and actively participated in the anti-fascist military operations. Eventually, he committed suicide due to illnesses and mental depression. He was a legendary author with many masterpieces in his all life. Ernest Miller Hemingway repeatedly thought about his experience of the First World War and had a sharper and more thorough understanding of things, so he often added his feelings andexperiences to his artwork. This novel is based on his own experience of the First World War.With war and love as the main lines, this novel reflects the evils of war and the disasters the war brings to people from the places closest to our lives. It is deeper. During the war, it is hard to guarantee everyone's safety, let alone happiness. It was very dramatic that Frederic Henry and Catherine Barkley met. This is probably about falling in love with the right person at the wrong time. Frederic Henry was an American lieutenant, and Catherine Barkley was an English nurse. Their occupations were specific to the war, and this seems to have signaled their end long ago. At their first meeting, she was still mourning the death of her fiancé, who was killed in the war, but Catherine encourages Henry's progress. Another meeting is when Henry was seriously wounded, and was taken to the hospital where Catherine. She constantly tended to Henry, and their relationship deepens. They fell in love and Catherine became pregnant. Henry was sent back to the front. Henry escaped from the army and was executed for desertion in Italy. Like the title A Farewell to Arms, Henry said goodbye to his presence as a weapon in the war. He was reunited with Catherine again and went to Switzerland. They spent a happy time together. But on the day of Catherine's delivery, the baby died and Catherine died too, just leaving Henry alone. This is actually an expected ending. There are many symbols. Rain isone of the symbols. It is a powerful symbol of the inevitable disappearance of happiness in life. The first example, while the rain fell on the roof, Catherine said it scared her, and said it had a meaning of destroying lovers. Catherine's fear was just like a predict, because bad luck eventually landed on these lovers. The second example, after Catherine's death, Henry left the hospital and walked home in the rain. The rain here proves Catherine's fear. Catherine died in the rain and Henry went to the darkness. By making a pair of lovers the main characters, this novel connects war with their lives, making the readers to understand and empathize more simply. War is brutal, and it means endless casualties. Under war, human nature specially stands out. Some people abandon their friends in order to survive, while others choose to fight side by side. War is just like a mirror that allows one to better understand the preciousness of peace.War is bad, and the people who start it are even worse. In the past, in the face of repeated wars of aggression, we didn’t give in. China still had the backbone and courage to resist its enemies. The Chinese nation united against the enemies. But now, our country is strong, no one can easily bully us. At all times, our country has always been a responsible image in the world. We help the weak and small countries and live in peace with other countries. Even though the dark history is behind us, as Chinese we should remember this history and make it as motivation to move forward. The war can end, but the memory will not. This dark memory willloom over people’s mind in a long time. So, peace first.。

老人与海英语读后感(一)When I was a middle school student, I’ve finished this book in Chinese. But when I read it in English,I really gain something new both in the way of expression and the spirit it shows to us.May be different ages to read the same book we will learn different things from it.At least, for my part, that is true.Firstly,I would like to review some information about this book.Such as the background, major characters and the topic of it.The Old Man and the Sea is a story by Ernest Hemingway, written in Cuba in 1951 and published in 1952. It was the last major work of fiction to be produced by Hemingway and published in his lifetime. One of his most famous works, it centers upon Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman who struggles with a giant marlin far out in the Gulf Stream. The Old Man and the Sea served to reinvigorate Hemingway's literary reputation and prompted a reexamination of his entire body of work. The novella was initially received with much popularity; it restored many readers' confidence in Hemingway's capability as an author. Its publisher, Scribner's, on an early dust jacket, called the novella a "new classic," and many critics favorably compared it with such works as William Faulkner's "The Bear" and Herman Melville's Moby-Dick.This book gives me a deep impression especially thedescription about the man’s braveness and persi stence. In this book, in order to suggest the profundity of the old man’s sacrifice and the glory that derives from it, Hemingway purposefully likens Santiago to Christ, who, according to Christian theology, gave his life for the greater glory of humankind. Crucifixion imagery is the most noticeable way in which Hemingway creates the symbolic parallel between Santiago and Christ. When Santiago’s palms are first cut by his fishing line, the reader cannot help but think of Christ suffering his stigmata. Later, when the sharks arrive, Hemingway portrays the old man as a crucified martyr, saying that he makes a noise similar to that of a man having nails driven through his hands. Furthermore, the image of the old man struggling up the hill with his mast across h is shoulders recalls Christ’s march toward Calvary. Even the position in which Santiago collapses on his bed—face down with his arms out straight and the palms of his hands up—brings to mind the image of Christ suffering on the cross. Hemingway employs these images in the final pages of the novella in order to link Santiago to Christ, who exemplified transcendence by turning loss into gain, defeat into triumph, and even death into renewed life. The major characters in this book are also vivid and lively.Sa ntiago?,the old man of the novella’s title, Santiago is a Cuban fisherman who has had an extended run of bad luck. Despite his expertise, he has been unable to catch a fish for eighty-four days. He is humble, yet exhibits a justified pride in his abilities. His knowledge of the sea and its creatures, and of his craft, is unparalleled and helps him preserve a sense of hope regardless of circumstance. The marlin?,Santiago hooks the marlin, which we learn at theend of the novella measures eighteen feet, on the first afternoon of his fishing expedition. Manolin?,a boy presumably in his adolescence, Manolin is Santiago’s apprentice and devoted attendant. The old man first took him out on a boat when he was merely five years old. Due to Santiago’s recent bad luck, Manolin’s parents have forced the boy to go out on a different fishing boat. Manolin, however, still cares deeply for the old man, to whom he continues to look as a mentor.Joe DiMaggio, although DiMaggio never appears in the novel, he plays a significant role nonetheless. Santiago worships him as a model of strength and commitment, and his thoughts turn toward DiMaggio whenever he needs to reassure himself of his own strength. Perico ?,Perico, the reader assumes, owns the bodega in Santiago’s village. He never appears in the novel, but he serves an important role in the fisherman’s life by providing him with newspapers that report the baseball scores. This act establishes him as a kind man who helps the aging Santiago.Martin, like Perico, Martin, a café owner in Santiago’s village, does not appear in the story. The reader learns of him through Manolin, who often goes to Martin for Santiago’s supper. As the old man says, Martin is a man of frequent kindness who deserves to be repaid. From the very first paragraph, Santiago is characterized as someone struggling against defeat. He has gone eighty-four days without catching a fish—he will soon pass his own record of eighty-seven days. Almost as a reminder of Santiago’s struggle, the sail of his skiff resembles “the flag of permanent defeat.” But the old man refuses defeat at every turn: he resolves to sail out beyond the other fishermen to where the biggest fish promise to be. He lands the marlin, tying his record of eighty-seven days after a brutal three-day fight, and he continues to ward off sharks from stealing his prey, even though he knows the battle is useless.Because Santiago is pitted against the creatures of the sea, some readers choose to view the tale as a chronicle of man’s battle against the natural world, but the novella is, more accurately, the story of man’s place within nature. Both Santiago and the marlin display qualities of pride, honor, and bravery, and both are subject to the same eternal law: they must kill or be killed. As Santiago reflects when he watches the weary warbler fly toward shore, where it will inevitably meet the hawk, the world is filled with predators, and no living thing can escape the inevitable struggle that will lead to its death. Santiago lives according to his own obse rvation: “man is not made for defeat . . . [a] man can be destroyed but not defeated.” In Hemingway’s portrait of the world, death is inevitable, but the best men (and animals) will nonetheless refuse to give in to its power. Accordingly, man and fish will struggle to the death, just as hungry sharks will lay waste to an old man’s trophy catch. The novel suggests that it is possible to transcend this natural law. In fact, the very inevitability of destruction creates the terms that allow a worthy man or beast to transcend it. It is precisely through the effort to battle the inevitable that a man can prove himself. Indeed, a man can prove this determination over and over through the worthiness of the opponents he chooses to face. Santiago finds the marlin worthy of a fight, just as he once found “the great negro of Cienfuegos” worthy. HSantiago, though destroyed at the end of the novella, is never defeated. Instead, he emerges as a hero. Santiago’s struggle does not enable him to change man’s place in the world. Rather,it enables him to meet his most dignified destiny. While it is certainly true that Santiago’s eighty-four-day run of bad luck is an affront to his pride as a masterful fisherman, and that his attempt to bear out his skills by sailing far into the gulf waters leads to disaster, Hemingway does not condemn his protagonist for being full of pride. On the contrary, Santiago stands as proof that pride motivates men to greatness. Because the old man acknowledges that he killed the mighty marlin largely out of pride, and because his capture of the marlin leads in turn to his heroic transcendence of defeat, pride becomes the source of Santiago’s greatest strength. Without a ferocious sense of pride, that battle would never have been fought, or more likely, it would have been abandoned before the end.Santiago’s pride also motivates his desire to transcend the destructive forces of nature. Throughout the novel, no matter how baleful his circumstances become, the old man exhibits an unflagging determination to catch the marlin and bring it to shore. When the first shark arrives, Santiago’s resolve is mentioned twice in the space of just a few paragraphs. Even if the old man had returned with the marlin intact, his moment of glory, like the marlin’s meat, would have been short-lived. The glory and honor Santiago accrues comes not from his battle itself but from his pride and determination to fight.Santiago dreams his pleasant dream of the lions at play on the beaches of Africa three times. The first time is the night before he departs on his three-day fishing expedition, the second occurs when he sleeps on the boat for a few hours in the middle of his struggle with the marlin, and the third takes place at the very end of the book. In fact, the sober promise of the triumph and regeneration with which the novella closes is supported bythe final image of the lions. Because Santiago associates the lions with his youth, the dream suggests the circular nature of life. Additionally, because Santiago imagines the lions, fierce predators, playing, his dream suggests a harmony between the opposing forces—life and death, love and hate, destruction and regeneration—of nature. This book gives me courage of conquering all kinds of difficulties .And I have the belief that the most beautiful thing is the process that we make our best to achieve our dream, and never say give up .老人与海英语读后感(二)the Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway\'s most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. 海明威另一个国度的英文读后感"A Farewell to Arms" - Hemingway's Vision of a Different RealmErnest Hemingway's "A Farewell to Arms" is a profound exploration of life, love, and war. Set against the backdrop of World War I, the novel tells the tale of Frederic and Catherine's doomed romance, mirroring Hemingway's own experiences. The portrayal of Frederic's emotional journey is striking. His transition from a detached, cynical observer to a man deeply in love offers a glimpse into the complexities of human emotions. Catherine, with her resilience and warmth, serves as a beacon of hope in a world torn by conflict. The theme of war is handled with remarkable restraint, yet its impact on individuals is felt through every page. Hemingway's writing style, concise and powerful, leaves a lasting impression. His use of understated language to convey profound emotions is masterful. The novel's closing lines, "I love you more than I have ever loved anything. And I know you feel the same way about me. This is all that I want now. You and me and a complete understanding of what we are to each other," encapsulates theessence of Hemingway's vision. It's a testament to the resilience of love in the face of adversity and a farewell to the horrors of war."A Farewell to Arms" is not just a war novel; it's a profound exploration of the human spirit and the enduring power of love. the novel describes is nearly 60 year, when the fisherman fishing, senior alone in a big fish, actually not pull. senior fisherman socialization, after a fish that this is a big marlin, beyond your fishing several folding, though clearly hard to win, but don't give up. later in the big marlin wound bring some of the fish suspicious of sharks smell groups, but the old man still snatch food hope not give up, and finally emphasizes surround close, returned to the big fish, let the other fisherman fishing is admired.when i read the "senior fisherman thought: here's coast is really too close, maybe there will be a bigger fish in further..." i appreciate this senior fishermen, because now he has cast in some fish, but he still was not solved, the present situation, but very close to goals. look, we often encounter a slightly is difficult, we are complaining nonstop. in the future, we will be the motherland, so it should be the old ideas, will be more lofty aspiration, for a better, more goals.when i read "the big marlin began to rapidly around the young fishing boats, cable suspension of mast twisting, old man exalted to the right hand of gangcha, leapt high flash, and the maximum throw it to heart, wail over fish, it is the life of the static static float on water......" i also like the stone falls in together. i appreciate the old man do not fear, unremitting spirit power, although know this game is very strong, but he isn't popular flinches slightly, but more intractable. just because of this spirit, to finish the senior fishermen life and death of the competition. we must also learn advanced fisherman's spiritual life, do not fear the difficulty, the only thing that can succeed.reading the big fish smells blood is the crowd, sharks swam grab food, the old man left, he can just twitching, with a stick with your right hand, mouth are permitted use of weapons to attack and defend the expelled the sharks. but the big fish eat meat has a most, but also his left hand charmingly criticized the work time is actually "time, i also subject to old optimism. in our life, some losses are inevitable, we should take an optimistic attitude toward to compute.finally, through a youth novel looked for 18 feet of senior fishermen, describe the marlins up the fish hugeness, explained the senior fisherman is not difficult, more common.the novel extol spirit senior fisherman fear hard and dangerous to fight, we will not like him, who can't satisfy the present situation, should actively, do anything is relentless, difficulty, may be welcome difficult never stop halfway. only in this way can we achieve greater success and victory.the Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time. This year summer vacation, I read the American well-known writer Hemingway's novel “ old person and sea ”. I extremely admire in the novel the senior fisherman's will, he let me understand one person certainly must have relentless spirit, only then could obtain successfully. The novel description is one year near sixty years of age senior fisherman, when alone goes to sea in one fishing, fished one big fish, actually did not pull. The senior fisherman socialized several days after the fish, only then discovered this was the big marlin which one surpassed the oneself fishing boat several fold, although knew perfectly well very difficult to win, but still did not give up. Afterwards and further because in the big marlin wound fish fishy smell brought in several crowds of shark fish snatches the food, but the old person still did not hope like this to give up, finally highlighted encircles tightly, returned to the big fish belt the fishing port, lets other fishermen not admire already. When I read “ the senior fisherman think: Here to the seacoast really was too near, perhaps could have a bigger fish in a farther place… ” When, I extremely admire this senior fisherman, because he by now already projected on some fish, but he had not settled to the present situation, but was approaches the bigger goal advance. Again has a look us, usually meets one slightly is difficult, we all complain incessantly. We will be the motherland future, will be supposed to like this old person same mind lofty aspiration, will even better pursue even better, the bigger goal. When I read “ the big marlin start fast to gather round the young fishing boat hover, twined the cable on the mast, the old person right hand lifted up high the steel fork, leapt the water surface in it the flash, did utmost throws to its heart, one wail endedthe big fish's life, it was static static floats on the water surface… ” When, my heart also liked together the big stone falls. I extremely admire old person that kind do not dread, the relentless spirit, although knows the match strength is very strong, but he not slightly flinches, but is welcomes difficultly above. Just because had this kind of spirit, the senior fisherman only then achieved this life and death contest success. We also must study senior fisherman's spirit in life, handles the matter does not fear the difficulty, only then can obtain successfully.I was very favor of a section of music in its balls. It’s p retty brisk, liked a wonderful song of a bird. Regarding to the characters, I liked Elizabeth, the he-ro-in-e,though I didn’t think she’s beautiful. But she’s smart. Now, I think I have understood more about it. I’m a prejudiced person so I can’t find where’s wrong.I merely like to do the things I like. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time. Was reading the big fish’s smell of blood is smelled by one crowd of shark fish, struggled swims snatches the food, old person’s left hand happen to in the convulsions, he only could use the right hand, with wooden stick, the mouth and so on all was allowed to use for the weapon self-defense which attacked, and finally expelled this crowd of shark fish. But the big fish’s meat was already eaten one most, but the old person also charmingly criticized oneself the left hand " this work time actually was resting " time, I also was subdued by the old person optimistic spirit. In the life, some losses are inevitable, we should treat by the optimistic manner, cannot be calculating. Finally, the novel sees by one youth the senior fisherman fully has 18 foot long big marlin in the measure, once more described this fish’s hugeness, explained senior fisherman overcomes the difficulty was big, non- was more common than. The novel eulogized the spirit which the senior fisherman fear hard and dangerous diligently did not struggle, we also should like his such, could not satisfy the present situation, should positively to above, do any matter all is relentless, meets difficultly must welcome difficultly above, could give up halfway in no way. Only has this, we only then can obtain a bigger success and the victory.《老人与海》英文读后感相关文章:。

Now, I think I have understood more about it. I'm a prejudiced person so I can't find where's wrong.I merely like to do the things I like. Everytime I meet somebody or something,my thinking about he or it all depends on my foregone experience and my mood of the time.老人与海英文读后感篇二Was reading the big fish’s smell of blood is smelled by one crowd of shark fish, struggled swims snatches the food, old person’s left hand happen to in the convulsions, he only could use the right hand, with wooden stick, the mouth and so on all was allowed to use for the weapon self-defense which attacked, and finally expelled this crowd of shark fish. Only has this, we only then can obtain a bigger successand the victory.老人与海英文读后感篇三In the book, the old man prepared his fishing properly and preciously than any other fishermen so that “Then when luck comes you are ready” as the old man thought to himself. In reality, some of us keep complaining that they are born in wrong time or good luck never knocks their doors. In fact, good luck sometimes just comes when they are not ready. Taking Newton for example, if he had not acquired a lot, millions of apples could never make him discovery the gravity. So if we just keep studying as much as we can, good luck will finally find us and a bright future is ahead of us. The old man never gives up hope. When all of people think he is doomed, he still strongly believes that he will get a big fish. And he does. So never giving up hope is very important to us. This reminded me of the sentence in Churchill’s speech “Never give up, never, never, never…”. “But man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated” has always been inspiring me when I counter with some setbacks in my life. Setbacks are inevitable in pursuit of our goals, but we should never be frustrated and should be “graceful under heavy pressure” like the old man. It is his relentless pursuit that contributes to the victory.。

Perhaps gradually will retreat its trace to a national war along with the years, but to an ordinary ordinary person, a bullet sufficiently will change his only life.I think perhaps the man most sorrowful is inside this actors final feeling, originally is most own two people simultaneously leaves himself.A FAREWELL TO ARMS this novel quite successful, makes one feel clear credible, this is and the author has attended the First World War personally, and has been seriously injured, has stayed in the hospital, has the personal life to experience and directly felts the experience not to be able to separate. In performance method, what the author uses is the Chinese reader very familiar novel skill, namely letscharacter own words and deeds move the reader, but does not make any discussion, he is also good at causing the scenery and the plot, the character organically fuses in together, achieves serves the plot, characters positive effect. The novel is popular in the language aspect writing, uses some basic vocabularies, the sentence type to be simple mostly, mostly uses Jian Danju. Anglicizing, is very good, therefore is good for both young and old, appeals to both cultured and popular tastes, this is the artistic achievement which this novel obtains.A FAREWELL TO ARMS opposed that wars distinct subject and the mature artistic skill have had the emormous influence, the greatest degree had reflected after First World War,a youth generation the mood which visits the fear and is at a loss,is all the rage the world very quickly.小妇人读后感英文版篇2Today, i have read the book Little Women .The deepest feeling is it is simple to be happy! Happiness is kinship, friendship, health, labor and peace of mind. Having it, people just feel normal. But when losting it, people perhaps will find that it can not be replaced by anything in the world! Ordinary is great!Every night before going to sleep, I want to carry it to read, lying in the bed, holding it in my hand until falling asleep. The book is still next to me when I wake up the next moring. This is what I want. This is the first book I love so much to read, because I like to look into the past from the childhood, I can find my own shadow, my own growth process. In the book, I can forget the sadness as a child can put it all behind. This book was written by the United States LouisaMayAlcott. This book can be regarded as a family biography to read, but it is not about the adults struggle but the growth of the children, telling them how to become mature from a naive, from vulnerable to suffering, from urgent to patient, from self to others. The book is a lively splash everywhere, the young mans innocence, purity, courage and vision for the future. They are really impressive. They four characters were completely different. Meg was16, Jo was15, Beth was14 , Amy was12. Meg was beautiful, attractive. And she envied dress. She did tuloring to help the family. Joe had a eautiful hair, and she was always running around in circles and had a strong personality.Though she often maked things worse, had a bad temper and did something like a boy,she was sincere. She loved writing and she helped family by doing nursing.Beth, loved by most people, was very cute and shy.She was very quiet and never be angry. There was no wonder that we all call her little baby. She liked to curl up in her own happy world. And only when she met people she trust in,she would be pulled out timid.Se was very sympathetic to the dolls, and she treated them as small baby by helping them make up new clothes. At the same time, she loved playing the piano. She was very easy to satisfy.Amy, was the smallest among their four, looked like a young lady. She wanted o be an artist and become the worlds greatest master. Lawrence was 16 years old.he lost his parent when he was a little boy.He was brought up by his grandfather. Not willing to lost his grandson,Mr Lawrence avoided him doing a lot of things he want to do.So he lived a sad and unhappy life with his grangfather and were not on good terms with each other before he knew those four girls. He had a lot of money, however,he did not show it off.He was very enthusiastic and he became a sunny boy. Mrs Marchi was a wise mother. She allowed her children to experience through the joys and sorrows of life and hoped her children to experience their lives instead of copy the history of generation. She hoped her children would be beautiful, talented, kind, loved and respected by the people. She would encourage children. She loved their country. To their motherland ,she encouraged her husband to the war and never regreted it.She had been learning how to set an example to the children. At first, every little girl had their share of vanity. However, after going through a lot, they gradually growed. They understand what is true happiness. Each of them had their own castles in the air and their little aspirration. In their view, family was their place of growth and refuge. They would listen carefully to their mother, would use their skillful hands and clever brain to creat the beauty of life and would beautify their soul. Some people said, four sisters growing up was like a richest interesting educating poem. The author used normal language to show us the great humam family, friendship and love.In the eyes of four sisters, the happiest thing was they could live with those who they loved forever.Indeed,In my opinion, this is also my greatest happiness. They were very hard woking and they helped the home to support the family by doing various things. They were busy but they did not lack of the luster of life.Once each of them had been lost, regreted, and puzzled, but anyway, they grew up.They wereinnocent and had no bad opinions. After experiencing a series of trials and life to death, they gradually said goodbye to their childish and became mature. They helped each other ,loved each other, and became a group of little women who could stir up the burdens of life. Their smile is in my mind, remembering me to be strong,to have a pure heart. They also tell us how to deal with family relationship. From them,I think I have to learn to be strong, learn how to be content and learn how to cherish what we have.Do not undershand their valuable after we lose them.We should treat others sincerely and regard every parting as forever parting.Just as the saying goes,do not cry for the past meteors,or you will miss the others. We should be careful to find others advantages. We should have hopes to the future and set our own goals and then strive to reach them.Allow ourselves to be an independent, strong and motivated people.Just be a real little woman!小妇人读后感英文版篇3Little Women is a novel published in 1868 and written by American author Louisa May Alcott. The story concerns the lives and loves of four sisters growing up during the American Civil War. It was based on Alcotts own experiences as a child inConcord, Massachusetts with her three sisters, Anna, May, and Elizabeth. Little Women is the story of The Marches, a family used to hard toil and suffering. Although Father March is away with the Union armies, the sisters Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth keep in high spirits with their mother, affectionately named Marmee. Their friendly gift of a Christmas holiday breakfast to a neighbouring family is an act of generosity rewarded with wealthy Mr. Laurences gift of a surprise Christmas feast. However, despite their efforts to be good, the girls show faults: the pretty Meg becomes discontented with the children she teaches; boyish Jo loses her temper regularly; while the golden-haired schoolgirl Amy is inclined towards affectation. However, Beth, who keeps the house is always kind and gentle. After certain happy times winning over the Laurences, dark times arrive as Marmee finds out about her husbands illness. Worse is to come as Beth contracts scarlet fever in her Samaritan efforts for a sick neighbour and becomes more or lean invalid. The novel tells of their progreinto young womanhood with the additional strains of romance, Beths terminal illness, the pressures of marriage and the outside world. This is the story of their growing maturity and wisdom and the search for the contentedneof family life. It was writtenin 1867 and is a fictionalised biography of Alcott and her sisters. It has become a much loved classic tale and, while some of its issues seem outdated, many of the trials of the sisters are all too relevant today as evidenced by its continued following.小妇人读后感英文版篇4Little Woman was written by American female writer Alcott. After reading this novel, I have some opinions about these four women. The novel described four sisters in the March family; they were kind to each other and love each other, hardworking, stayed with neighbor Laurence friendly. Different disposition girls had found their own happy through their own goodness and industrious. The novel has not a fluctuation plot and fascinating suspension in a play, but the author described the happiness in March family with the simple language. Their good and kind, loyalty to love and family has left me a deep impression. The author only described very ordinary detail in the life, but reveals the love to the happy life expectation everywhere.Although these girls born in a poor family, but they all had the positive attitude to any matter, the novel had laidemphasis on their individuality and the dignity, but also has displayed their self-expression restraint. Independently was these four girlss common characteristic, they always keep discovering their own shortcoming and correct it as soon as possible which worth our learning. Look we, some people always make mistakes, but they always think that it is a small mistake; they dont need to notice it, let it go. If every one like them, the society will become very awful, no rule can limit peoples behaviors, they can do anything they like. These four girls are very different, let me introduce them, Meg, the eldest of the four, was sixteen, and very pretty, being plump and fair, with large eyes, plenty of soft, brown hair, a sweet mouth, and white hands, of which she was rather vain. Fifteen-year-old Jo was very tall, thin, and brown, and reminded one of a colt, for she never seemed to know what to do with her long limbs, which were very much in her way. She had a decided mouth, a comical nose, and sharp, gray eyes, which appeared to see everything, and was by turns fierce, funny, or thoughtful. Her long, thick hair was her one beauty, but it was usually bundled into a net, to be out of her way. Round shoulders had Jo, big hands and feet, a flyaway look to her clothes, and the uncomfortable appearance of a girl whowas rapidly shooting up into a woman and didnt like it. Beth, as everyone called her was a rosy, smooth-haired, bright-eyed girl of thirteen, with a shy manner, a timid voice, and a peaceful expression which was seldom disturbed. Her father called her Little Tranquility, and the name suited her excellently, for she seemed to live in a happy world of her own, only venturing out to meet the few whom she trusted and loved. Amy, though the youngest, was a most important person in her own opinion at least. A regular snow maiden, with blue eyes, and yellow hair curling on her shoulders, pale and slender, and always carrying herself like a young lady mindful of her manners. What the characters of the four sisters were we will leave to be found out.I love Meg for her being glad to impoverish for love, not enticed by the money. She did family teacher to help the family. I love Jo for her free and easy, likes her for the steadfast determination which she struggles for dream. She earns living expenses with aunt March and writes articles for the newspaper to gain the payment to increase the daily necessities to the family. I love Beth for her tranquil characteristic, doing anything without any complain. Like her good personal character which always considers for others, she loves music and feels shy with strangers, so she always does some housework with her mother at home. I also love Amy for her strong desire; she regard supporting the poor people as her own faith. She was interested in sketch. Though their idea and the destiny are various, they had all found their own love.In their eyes, the family was not only the place of growth but also the holy refuge. They liked to hear their mothers instruction carefully; they created games by their clever brain and hands which can beautify the mind. Four sisters growth courses were as if an interest education poem. The author had shown us the humanitys great dear ones such as friendship and love with ordinary language. In my opinion, it will be the happiest matter if these four sisters can live with those who they love. They are all good person, if I can live with them, I think my left will become rich and colorful. An old saying said that three women can play a performance, woman always have their own idea, if the idea has formed, and almost no one can change it. When women meet, if one talks her opinion about something, another one will give her opinion to the first one, then the argument will take place, lets imagine, there were four women in one family, though they are sister, argument cant avoid, it will be very interesting in the home. From the novel, I have learned that we should keep hope for future and make great efforts to seek dream. I also have learned to cherish what you have had such as your parents, time and so on ,we should discover everyones merit but to take the colored eye to see others shortcoming.Remember, whatever your goal is, you will get it if you are willing to do!小妇人读后感英文版篇5In Little Women, you will meet the March sisters, Meg, Jo, Beth Laurie who quickly find a place as part of the March family. The second half of the novel, focuses on the girls as they leave their childhood and begin their journey into adult life. Lessons of friendship, family, and love are covered as we join the characters through the ups and downs of life, good times and bad. It seems that Louisa May Alcott used her own family as the basis for the stories in Little Women, basing the character Jo on herself. It is amazing how though the book was written in the late 1800s, so many things about humans remain the same. The foundations of life that are important infriendships, family t change through time, as Alcott has shared with us. This is a book that young and old can read and appreciate.。

永别了武器读后感英文

永别了武器读后感英文"A Farewell to Arms" Reading Reflection"A Farewell to Arms" is a novel written by Ernest Hemingway, published in 1929. The story is set during World War I and follows the experiences of an American ambulance driver in the Italian army, Frederic Henry, as he falls in love with a British nurse, Catherine Barkley. The title of the novel, "A Farewell to Arms," suggests a departure from the idea of using weapons as a means of resolving conflicts, and instead, emphasizes the futility and devastation of war. After reading the novel, I was deeply moved by the themesof love, loss, and the human cost of war.One of the central themes of the novel is the disillusionment with war and the futility of violence. Throughout the story, Hemingway portrays the horrors of war and the impact it has on the lives of the characters. The senseless deaths, the destruction of cities, and the emotional toll on the soldiers and civilians all serve tohighlight the sense of hopelessness and despair that war brings. The characters are constantly surrounded by death and destruction, and the novel powerfully conveys the idea that war only brings suffering and loss. The title, "A Farewell to Arms," also alludes to the idea of letting go of the traditional notions of heroismand glory in war. Hemingway's portrayal of the characters, particularly Frederic Henry, challenges the romanticized image of war and instead presents a more realistic and human perspective. Frederic Henry is not a traditional hero; he is flawed and vulnerable, and his experiences in the war leave him disillusioned and emotionally scarred. The novel suggests that the true cost of war is not just the physical casualties, but also the emotional and psychological tollit takes on the individuals who are caught up in it.Love and loss are also central themes in the novel, as Frederic Henry's relationship with Catherine Barkley becomes a source of hope and comfort in the midst of the chaos of war. Their love is portrayed as a refuge from the brutality of the world around them, and their desire for apeaceful and normal life together serves as a contrast to the violence and destruction of the war. However, their happiness is short-lived, and the novel ultimately becomesa poignant exploration of the devastating effects of loss and grief. The title, "A Farewell to Arms," can also beinterpreted as a farewell to the weapons of war, symbolizing a rejection of violence and a longing for peace. Hemingway's powerful depiction of the human cost of war serves as a reminder of the need to strive for peace and understanding, rather than resorting to conflict and aggression. The novel's title encapsulates the idea of bidding farewell to the destructive forces that tear people apart and instead embracing the possibility ofreconciliation and harmony. In conclusion, "A Farewell to Arms" is a poignant and thought-provoking novel that explores the devastatingimpact of war on the lives of individuals. Through its portrayal of love, loss, and the futility of violence, the novel delivers a powerful message about the need for peaceand understanding in the face of conflict. Hemingway's masterful storytelling and evocative prose make "A Farewell to Arms" a timeless and relevant work that continues to resonate with readers today. After reading the novel, I was left with a profound sense of the human cost of war and a renewed determination to strive for a world where weapons are truly bid farewell, and peace becomes the prevailing force.。

The book report of A Farewell To ArmsA Farewell to Arms is a semi-autobiographical novel written by Ernest Hemingway concerning events during the Italian campaigns in the First World War. The book is a first-person account of American, Frederic Henry, serving as a Lieutenant ("Tenente") in the ambulance corps of the Italian army. The plot summaryThe novel opens with a description of artillery-laden troops marching slowly. It begins when Henry returns. His roommate, Rinaldi introduces Henry to Catherine Barkley, and their relationship begins. While on the Italian front, Henry is wounded in the knee and sent to a hospital in Milan. Then it shows the growth of Henry and Catherine's relationship as they spend time together in Milan over the summer. Henry falls in love with Catherine and, by the time he is healed, Catherine is three months pregnant. Henry returns, but afterwards the Austro-Germans break through the Italian lines and the Italians retreat. Henry kills an engineering sergeant for insubordination. After falling behind and catching up again, Henry is taken to a place by the "battle police", where officers are being interrogated and executed for the "treachery" that supposedly led to the Italian defeat. However, after seeing and hearing that everyone interrogated is killed, Henry escapes by jumping into a river. Catherine and Henry reunite and flee to Switzerland in a rowboat. In the final, Henry and Catherine live a quiet life in the mountains until she goes into labor. After a long and painful birth, their son is stillborn. Catherine begins to hemorrhage and soon dies, leaving Henry to return to their hotel in the rain.CharactersFrederic Henry is most characterized throughout the novel by his passionate love and dedication to Catherine Barkley.Catherine Barkley is a British Voluntary Aid Detachment Nurse. She is emotional, and dependent upon Henry's love for her.Rinaldi is a physician through whom Hemingway draws his idea of an Italian male. He loves women and alcohol.SymbolsSymbols are objects, characters, figures, or colors used to represent abstract ideas or concepts.RainRain serves in the novel as a potent symbol of the inevitable disintegration of happiness in life. Catherine infuses the weather with meaning as she and Henry lie in bed listening to the storm outside. As the rain falls on the roof, Catherine admits that the rain scares her and says that it has a tendency to ruin things for lovers. Of course, no meteorological phenomenon has such power; symbolically, however,Catherine’s fear proves to be prophetic, for doom does eventually come to the lovers. After Catherine’s death, Henry leaves the hospital and walks home in the rain. Here, the falling rain validates Catherine’s anxiety and confirms one of the novel’s main contentions: great love, like anything else in the world—good or bad, innocent or deserving—cannot last. The Grim Reality of WarAs the title of the novel makes clear, A Farewell to Arms concerns itself primarily with war, namely the process by which Frederic Henry removes himself from it and leaves it behind. The few characters in the novel who actually support the effort—Ettore Moretti and Gino—come across as a dull braggart and a naïve youth, respectively. The majority of the characters remain ambivalent about the war, resentful of the terrible destruction it causes, doubtful of the glory it supposedly brings. The novel offers masterful descriptions of the conflict’s senseless brutality and violent chaos: the scene of the Italian army’s retreat remains one of the most profound evocations of war in American literature. Hemingway suggests that war is nothing more than the dark, murderous extension of a world that refuses to acknowledge, protect, or preserve true love. The Relationship between Love and PainAgainst the backdrop of war, Hemingway offers a deep, mournful meditation on the nature of love. Henry’s understanding of how meaningful his love for Catherine is outweighs any consideration for the emptiness of abstract ideals such as honor, enabling him to flee the war and seek her out. Reunited, they plan an idyllic life together that promises to act as a salve for the damage that the war has inflicted. Far away from the decimated Italian countryside, each intends to be the other’s refuge. If they are to achieve physical, emotional, and psychological healing, they have found the perfect place in the safe remove of the Swiss mountains. The tragedy of the novel rests in the fact that their love, even when genuine, can never be more than temporary in this world.英语四班陈雪2220102882。

A Farewell to arms 读后感

A Farewell to arms 读后感

A Farewell to Arms book review Recently, I’ve read a book named A Farewell to Arms. A story of love and pain, of loyalty and desertion, represents a new romanticism for Hemingway, written when he was 30 years old.Arms, here, refers to two meanings. The superficial meaning is the war, the deeper meaning is love. War and love are the clues pass through the whole book.A farewell to the war: Henry, a young American soldier serving in Italy arm during the World War Ⅰ.At first, he was confident in the war and didn’t think too much about it. However, when he returned from the American hospital, his attitude towards to the war changed. He began to hate the war, for it departed him and Catherine. As the days gone by, his hatred increased. At last, he could’t bear the cruelness and bore in the war any more. So he escaped, far from the battlefield. But the effect of war seemed never left him.A farewell to the love: during the war, he met Catherine, a British nurse. When he was recovering in the hospital, Catherine came along to meet him. There, they fell in love. Reluctantly, Henry had to go back to the battlefield. After he escaped from the army, he went to find Catherine. In Switzerland, they met again. After reading A Farewell to Arms-------Ernest Miller Hemingway“A Farewell to Arms” is a famous novel written by Ernest Miller Hemingway who was an American novelist. It is a semi-autobiographical novel concerning events during the Italian campaigns during the First World War. It tells of a groovy kind of love between an ambulance driver and an English nurse in times of war. Hemingway experienced Spanish Civil War and two world wars which provided rich writing material for his works. In Hemingway’s times the United States was going through a crisis period, though its industry was developing rapidly and material was in profusion, there existed disquieting elements, which led to The Great Recession. This full of war, violence, murder, evil, fear, despair and death world had a decisive impact on Hemingway , and it left incurable trauma both physically and mentally.A Farewell to Arms is told through the point of view of Lieutenant Frederic Henry, an American serving as an ambulance driver in the Italian army during World War I. Henry is drafted into the army and is sent to the battlefield of the Italian front to hold the post of lieutenant. Because of the introduction of his good friend Rinaldi, he knows Catherine and falls in love with her. But so on after, Henry has to go to the front, he is wounded at the front by a trench mortar shell when he is eating with his peers, his leg is badly injured and sent to the field hospital then shifted to a newly-established American hospital in Milan where he met with Catherine again, she tends to him in the hospital during his recuperation, and their relationship develops. They love each other so much that they look for as many opportunities as possible to stay together And Henry is nominated awarded a silver medal because of his injury. During this period Henry is pregnant. After Henry’s wound recovers, he has to return to the front, he will miss Catherine as long as he is not so busy. However, Henry narrowly escapes death at the hands of fanatical Italian soldiers, who are executing officers separated from their troops during the Italians' disastrous retreat following the Battle of Caporetto. All that he thinks is that he must meet with Catherine. However, Catherine has gone to Stresa, after many setbacks they have a reunion. After a sojournin an Italian resort, the couple flees to Switzerland on the eve of Henry's arrest for deserting. They lead a peaceful life in Switzerland. They walk, read, and discuss what should do after the war , they are both waiting anxiously for the child's birth. Unfortunately their child is born dead, and Catherine dies shortly after due to hemorrhages. The fate is so merciless!A Farewell to Arms is an excellent novel, which is more than a novel about war, it pays more attention to the love .When reading the book, we can notice how every important event of the war is overshadowed by the strong love story behind. Hemingway’s thought that the war itself is a kind of absurd behavior, ridiculously, many teenage regard it as a glorious thing. Different from those confused young people, Hemingway had a deep and clear understanding about the evil war. Thinking about the themes of this story, though there are several themes in this novel, the major theme is the importance of love and loss in a male-female relationship. In this novel, Hemingway contrasted the cruelty of the war with the personal happiness , lay much emphases on the goodness of love so as to show the brutality of war when love is destroyed. As far as I am concerned, the war is the most evil thing in the world, which not only ruins people’s homes, but vandalizes people’s hearts. Without war, I believe that Henry and Catherine could have led a happy life, Catherine and their child would not die. The title of this novel is A Farewell to Arms, which has two aspects of meaning, in the first sense, it means that say good bye to the war, in the second sense ,say goodbye to the hug, the insinuation is obvious. Through Catherine, we can see that the author still has no idea to forget his first true lover. The last part of this novel makes a strong impression on me. “You can’t come in now,” one of the nurses said. “Yes I can,” I said. “You can’t come in yet.” “You get out,” I said. “The other one, too.” But after I had got them out and shut the door and turned off the light it wasn’t any good. It was like saying good-by to a statue. After a while I went out and left the hospital and walked back to the hotel in the rain. These words seem to be simple, but very exquisite. We can read Henry’s behavi or and language after Catherine dies between lines, where reveals irresistible dismal atmosphere, we can feel the protagonist’s strong feeling of dissatisfaction. In terms of the writing style, we may probably hear about Hemingway’s “Iceberg Principle” ,Th e situations in A Farewell to Arms are chaotic, by presenting a very ordered surface for reader ,the reader is able to examine the chaos and complexity with a fairly clear head. In the beginning of the article, the author uses the techniqueof lyrics, using short and concise words to describe some scenery which suggest the tragic end. Hemingway's distinctive writing style is characterized by economy and understatement , which had a significant influence on the development of twentieth-century fiction writing. It also talks about the Relationship between Love and Pain Against the backdrop of war, Hemingway offers a deep, mournful meditation on the nature of love. Henry’s understanding of how meaningful his love for Catherine is outweighs any consideration for the emptiness ofabstract ideals such as honor, enabling him to flee the war and seek her out. Reunited, they plan an idyllic life together that promises to act as a salve for the damage that the war has inflicted. Far away from the decimated Italian coun tryside, each intends to be the other’s refuge. If they are to achieve physical, emotional, and psychological healing, they have found the perfect place in the safe remove of the Swiss mountains. The tragedy of the novel rests in the fact that their love, even when genuine, can never be more than temporary in this world.。

Farewell to Arms is a classic novel written by Ernest Hemingway, set against the backdrop of World War I. The novel follows the story of an American ambulance driver in the Italian army, Frederic Henry, and his love affair with a British nurse, Catherine Barkley. As I read this novel, I was deeply moved by the themes of war, love, and the human condition. One of the most striking aspects of Farewell to Arms is its portrayal of the brutality and futility of war. Hemingway vividly describes the horrors of battle, the senseless violence, and the devastating impact it has on the lives of those involved. Through the character of Frederic Henry, we witness the disillusionment and despair that war brings, as well as the loss of innocence and the struggle to find meaning in a world torn apart by conflict. This depiction of war as a destructive force that tears families apart and leaves a trail of devastation in its wake is both powerful and thought-provoking.In addition to its portrayal of war, Farewell to Arms also explores the theme of love in the midst of chaos and uncertainty. The relationship between Frederic and Catherine is a central focus of the novel, and it serves as a beacon of hope and light in a dark and tumultuous world. Their love is a source of comfort and solace, a refuge from the horrors of war. However, it is also a fragile and fleeting thing, as the couple must navigate the challenges and obstacles that come with their circumstances. The novel's portrayal of love as a force that can both heal and hurt, that can bring joy and sorrow in equal measure, is deeply moving and resonant. Finally, Farewell to Arms offers a poignant exploration of the human condition and the struggle to find meaning and purpose in a world marked by suffering and loss. The characters in the novel grapple with questions of mortality, faith, and the nature of existence, and their experiences reflect the universal human desire for connection, understanding, and a sense of belonging. In the face of adversity, they demonstrateresilience, courage, and a determination to find moments of beauty and grace amidst the chaos. In conclusion, Farewell to Arms is a powerful and evocative novel that explores the complexities of war, love, and the human experience. Hemingway's masterful storytelling and vivid prose bring to life a world marked by conflict and turmoil, and his characters grapple with the profound questions and challenges that define the human condition. As I read this novel, I was deeply moved by its themes and characters, and I found myself reflecting on the enduring power of love, the devastating impact of war, and the resilience of the human spirit. Farewell to Arms is a timeless work that continues to resonate with readers, offering a profound and moving exploration of the human experience.。

A Farewell to Arms_永别了武器英语读后感400字Novels can basically be divided into two parts, one is written on the battlefield, and the other is written by Henry and Catherine. As for the war scenes, because there are many geographical nouns in the novel, plus geopolitical unfamiliar, it is not for the time being. In spite of this, a novel or to allow readers to feel the cruelty of war is boring strike the eye and rouse the mind. For example, when Henry was injured and returned to the rear, Hemingway described a simple scene of a soldier's dripping when he died, such as the killing of a compatriot at the time of a large retreat. A driver of Henry, who felt he had not killed an enemy on the battlefield, collapsed a British man to boast of the day; the Italy gendarmerie shot the loss of the Ministry. The officers of the team were almost arbitrary, and they were all Italian. In those years, we always had all the things we didn't want to happen to him. The two groups, even more ambitions, went into a lot of people. They did not know what the war was. They hated him but obedient to him. They all defaults to live well after the war, but most of them defaults that the war was going to take his life. In such a situation 1————来源网络整理,仅供供参考of being submitting to killing, they fought hard.In the work of farewell to arms, Hemingway spoke frankly and openly about his stand against the war. He is not like others trying to create a strong war scene, he only respect the facts, and the victims of every war; in life we have to have the spirit of Hemingway, in fact, to prove the mistake, do not see the people, no own opinion, and finally only backwardness and absurdity.Destiny is in your own hands, do not blindly bleed, do not sacrifice meaninglessly, recognize yourself, life will go far, and it will be worth living. A farewell to arms读书笔记

A farewell to arms读书笔记

Quote:There is nothing as bad as war. . . . When people realize how bad it is they cannot do anything to stop it because they go crazy. There are some people who never realize. There are people who are afraid of their officers. It is with them the war is made.Comment:Frederic talks with the ambulance drivers he commands. Although he makes a detailed case that being conquered is worse than war itself, Passini disagrees with him here. The drivers assert that “there is no finish to a war” and “everybody hates this war,” so refusing to fight would be the best course of action. However, their arguments fail to change Frederic’s mind. In this conversation, the characters express ambivalent or nuanced views in the form of an argument. Readers may note that Frederic’s views on war also become more ambivalent over time.Quote:It looked as though the war were going on for a long time. . . . Next year would be a bad year, or a good year maybe. . . . The Italians were using up an awful lot of men. I did not see how it could go on. . . . Perhaps wars weren’t won any more. Maybethey went on forever.Comment:Frederic, like everyone else, expected this war to be short, and yet now no end seems near. The Americans will not arrive in large numbers until next year, which is why next year might be a good year. The Italians have been fighting all summer but have made no progress in the mountains. Frederic previously expressed his belief in the importance of winning. He knows that horrible things can be done to a conquered people. He now reflects that the war could go on forever, never being won, yet he does not admit that the war could be lost.Quote:If they killed men as they did this fall the Allies would be cooked in another year. He said we were all cooked but we were all right as long as we did not know it. We were all cooked. The thing was not to recognize it. The last country to realize they were cooked would win the war.Comment:Frederic remembers the words of a British major he met at a club. The major’s philosophy of warfare—that the last country to realize how much it was losing would win—reflects a hard-nosed realism that acknowledges but does not dwell on allthe losses implied by being “cooked.” The major apparently takes the big-picture view that winning is the ultimate good and worth all of the sacrifice involved. Frederic describes the major as pessimistic, but the major’s basic philosophy may be sound: Since war always means loss and sacrifice, those who are best able to ignore the loss will ultimately prevail.Quote:No one ever stopped when they were winning. . . . It is in defeat that we become Christian. . . . I don’t mean technically Christian.I mean like Our Lord. If they felt the same way as we do, it would be all right. But they have beaten us. They feel another way.Comment:After Frederic’s friend the priest expresses optimism that the war will end soon because he observes decreased enthusiasm for fighting in the officers, Frederic points out the priest’s misunderstanding. He points out that only the defeated clearly see the wastefulness of war. The winning side, in this case the Austrians and Germans, will be energized to continue fighting. Frederic possesses a fighter’s attitude, which the priest does not, so he understands how winning can allow one to discount all the waste and suffering that losing emphasizes. Frederic isproven correct almost immediately when the Austrians and Germans make a late-season attack.Quote:I would like to have had the uniform off although I did not care much about the outward forms. . . . I was through. I wished them all the luck. There were the good ones, and the brave ones, and the calm ones and the sensible ones, and they deserved it. But it was not my show any more.Comment:After nearly being executed by some ignorant military police, Frederic flees the army. He has already lost the ambulances he was responsible for and some of his men, and the retreating army is turning on its own officers. Once, Frederic believed victory in the war was necessary. Here he reveals how he now feels no more connection to the conflict or the army as a whole, only to the individuals who are fighting honorably. Of course, Frederic only rejects the Italian army after the army rejects him. If he still had men to lead and was allowed to do so, he would still be serving.Quote:I remember having a silly idea he might come to the hospital where I was. With a sabre cut, I suppose, and a bandage aroundhis head. Or shot through the shoulder. Something picturesque. . . . He didn’t have a sabre cut. They blew him to bits.Comment:Catherine explains that she became a nurse because her fiancéwas in the army. She had no realistic understanding of what war could do, especially not to her loved one. Now she does. She speaks of his death matter-of-factly, probably in part because in her nursing work she has seen much death and maiming both before and since her fiancé’s death. Her intimate understanding of death, as both a physical fact and emotional loss, explains why Catherine seems so straightforward. She feels determined to live for now and not let frivolous concerns get in her way.Quote:I saw how their minds worked; if they had minds and if they worked. They were all young men and they were saving their country. . . . The questioners had that beautiful detachment and devotion to stern justice of men dealing in death without being in any danger of it.Comment:Frederic watches as military policemen pull officers from theretreating army, question them, and shoot them. Their stated crime is having become separated from their troops, but their more fundamental sin, in the eyes of the shooters, is allowing the retreat to happen at all, thus shaming the “fatherland.” Here, Frederic observes with bitter irony that men in no danger themselves easily dispense “justice” in the form of executions. If they had ever been in mortal danger, in either battle or retreat, they would empathize with the other and thus be slower to kill. Frederic despises his potential executioners’ ignorance.Quote:That was what you did. You died. You did not know what it was about. You never had time to learn. They threw you in and told you the rules and the first time they caught you off base they killed you. Or they killed you gratuitously like Aymo. . . . Stay around and they would kill you.Comment:After Frederic learns that his son was born dead, he reflects that, having never lived, the boy will not have “all this dying to go through,” meaning the dying of others. Frederic then immediately concludes that Catherine will die too and thinks of the killing of his comrade, Aymo, who was killed by friendly fire.He sees death as senseless, but rather than blaming nature or chance, he blames an unnamed “they,” as though malevolent forces are actively looking for excuses to kill. Having witnessed so much needless death recently, Frederic may understandably feel as though death is stalking his loved ones.Quote:Once in camp I put a log on top of the fire and it was full of ants. As it commenced to burn, the ants swarmed out. . . . I remember thinking at the time that it was the end of the world and a splendid time to be a messiah and lift the log off the fire. . . . But I did not do anything.Comment:Frederic recalls this memory just after learning that Catherine may die from a hemorrhage. He equates allowing a log full of ants to burn when he could have rescued them, which he remembers with some shame, to his inaction in the face of Catherine’s illness. The comparison seems unfair to him because the two situations are different. While he could have saved the ants, he certainly does not have the ability to save Catherine. Frederic took control of his own fate many times: separating from the convoy during the retreat, escaping the military police, rowing to Switzerland. Regarding Catherine, however, he has no control.Quote:What you tell me about in the nights. That is not love. That is only passion and lust. When you love you wish to do things for. You wish to sacrifice for. You wish to serve. . . . You will. I know you will. Then you will be happy. . . . You cannot know about it unless you have it.Comment:The priest talks to Frederic about love at the beginning of the story. At this point, Frederic has never been in love, as he freely admits, although he spends a lot of time with women. The priest refers to Frederic’s visits to the local bawdy house when he says “what you tell me about in the nights.” Frederic insists, however, that he feels happy, but the priest disagrees. He believes Frederic must love—truly love—in order to be truly happy. The priest gives a succinct definition of love that presages Frederic’s experience with Catherine as described in the story to come.。

Garrett and Benjamin Glazer, from the Hemingway novel, and was directed by Frank Borzage. The movie stars Helen Hayes, Gary Cooper and Adolphe Menjou. The film was remade with the same title in 1957, starring Jennifer Jones, Rock Hudson and Vittorio De Sica and was directed by Charles Vidor and John Huston. De Sica was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role in this version. The 1996 movie In Love and War, directed by Richard Attenborough, is a more biographical work, based on the same background as A Farewell to Arms. The novel, a love story, draws heavily on Hemingway's experiences as a young soldier in Italy. It tells the story of Lieutenant Frederic Henry, a young American ambulance driver serving in the Italian army during World War I. Henry falls in love with the British nurse Catherine Barkley. After he is wounded at the front by a trench mortar shell, she tends to him in the hospital during his recuperation, and their relationship develops. His recuperation and romance with the now pregnant Catherine ends abruptly when Henry must return to the front. Henry narrowly escapes death at the hands of fanatical Italian soldiers, who are executing officers separated from their troops during the Italians' disastrous retreat following the Battle of Caporetto. He finds Catherine, and after a sojourn in an Italian resort, the couple flees to Switzerland on the eve of Henry's arrest for deserting. In Switzerland, their child is born dead, and Catherine dies shortlyafter due to hemorrhages. A Farewell to Arms is an excellent example of the simple, terse prose style that made Hemingway famous.永别了武器英文读后感(二)Compared to other 9th or 10th grade books, the English used in this book is not too difficult, but many of the historical and cultural references will require additional research if you want to fully understand them.A Farewell to Arms focuses on a relationship between an American officer fighting for the Italian army and a British nurse during World War I. It therefore covers two of the most common topics in Western (and perhaps all of) literature: love and war. The book provides a first-person account of the Great War, which is a critical event in Western history, and it discusses some of the perceived cultural differences between Americans, Italians, Britons, Austrians, and Germans. Moreover, for those of you especially interested in writing, this book is famous for its direct, impassive writing style.Hemingway's straightforward writing style usually keeps the grammar simple. However, this also means that the book sometimes describes important events in very few words, so it is easy to miss something important. Moreover, the book makes many references without any explanation—for example, references to Europe, European languages, and war vocabulary—which may make it difficult to understand without looking these up on your own.。

永别了武器 读后感 A Book Report on A Farewell to Arms
In this story, Hemingway showed us a changing process of people’s attitude toward the war, which destroyed not only love but also humanity. At first, people were devoted to the war, later they became doubted and then got disgusted and indifferent at last. It showed us the mental attitude of the “confused generation” after the World War I. They hated war but couldn’t stop it; they couldn’t see hope but still didn’t want to give up.
War is an inevitable topic in the modern world. Human created war with the arms they invented. “A Farewell to Arms” might just be a beautiful hope of human. However, human are also the victims of war and their anti-war passions are strong and widespread. Death is a inevitable result of war, just as the death of Catherine. Although she didn’t die on the battlefield, it was still the war that caused her death. Frederic was also dead, dead in heart. The author indicated the readers that Frederic was a victim of the war and he and many people of his times become the “confused generation”. The reason why they were confused is that they were destroyed by the war and lost their souls.

InHemingway’s times t he United States was going through a crisis period, though its industry was developing rapidly and material was in profusion, there existed disquieting elements, which led to The Great Recession. But so on after, Henry has to go to the front, he is wounded at the front by a trench mortar shell when he is eating with his peers, his leg is badly injured and sent to the field hospital then shifted to a newly-established American hospital in Milan where he met with Catherine again, she tends to him in the hospital during his recuperation, and theirrelationship develops. They love each other so much that they look for as many opportunities as possible to stay together And Henry is nominated awarded a silver medal because o f his injury. After a sojourn in an Italian resort, the couple fleesto Switzerland on the eve of Henry's arrest for deserting. Different from those confused young people, Hemingway had a deep and clearunderstanding about the evil war. As far as I am concerned, the war is the most evil t hing in the world, which not only ruins people’s homes, but vandalizes people’s hearts. Through Catherine, we can see that the author still has no idea to forget his first true love r. The last part of this novel makes a strong impression on me. “You can’t come in now,” one of the nurses said. “Yes I can,” I said. “You can’t come in yet.” “You get out,” I said. “The other one, too.” But after I had got them out and shut the door andt urned off the light it wasn’t any good. It was like saying good-by to a statue. After a while I went out and left the hospital and walked back to the hotel in the rain. These words seem to be simple, but very exquisite. We can read Henry’s behavior and language after Catherine dies between lines, where reveals irresistible dismal atmosphere, we can feel the protagonist’s strong feeling of dissatisfaction. In terms of the writing style, we may probably hear about Hemingway’s “Iceberg Principle” ,The situations in A Farewell to Arms are chaotic, by presenting a very ordered surface for reader ,the reader is able to examine the chaos and complexity with a fairly clear head. In the beginning of the article, the author usesthe technique of lyrics, using short and concise words to describe some scenery which suggest the tragic end. Hemingway's distinctive writing style is characterized by economy andunderstatement , which had a significant influence on the development of twentieth-century fiction writing. It also talks about the Relationship between Love and Pain Against the backdrop of war, Hemingway offers a deep, mournful meditation on the nature of love. Far away from the decimated Italian countryside,e ach intends to be the other’s refuge. If they are to achieve physical, emotional, and psychological healing, they have found the perfect place in the safe remove of the Swiss mountains. The tragedy of the novel rests in the fact that their love, even when genuine, can never be more than temporary in this world.。
