12,000 Fill-in-the-Blank First Letter Questions for Middle School English, Advanced EditionOh man, you guys won't believe what my English teacher just assigned our class. It's this huge book of 2,000fill-in-the-blank questions where you have to supply the missing first letter to complete the word or phrase. And this isn't just any old fill-in-the-blank book - it's the dreaded "Advanced Edition"!I remember last year we had to do the regular edition for our homework and I thought that was brutal. Page after page of sentences with a blank line where you had to write in the first letter. Like "The _og ran after the frisbee." Or " _aris is the capital of France." Over and over again until your hand cramped up from writing so much.Well, this advanced edition is supposed to be way harder. The intro says it's designed to "challenge students' vocabulary and critical thinking skills to the utmost." Yeah, no kidding! It claims the sentences use "advanced lexical constructions andsophisticated contextual clues." Whatever that means, it can't be good for those of us who just want to kick back and surf YouTube after school. From the few sample questions I peeked at, this book is no joke. The sentences are absolutely riddled with blank lines, sometimes three or four per sentence. Like "The _rofligate_onductor's _ompletely _acophonous _erformance was a _iasco." How're we supposed to figure out words like "profligate" and "cacophonous"? Those aren't even normal English words as far as I'm concerned. And it's not just vocab from the ancient thesaurus they're testing us on. I saw another sample that was "_akehiko_awamura's _udoku _uzzles are _opular _astimes for the_ognitively _nclined." Okay, so now we're expected to know random Japanese names and words like sudoku too? This is an English book, right? The crazy thing is, we're supposed to complete the entire 2,000 question book for homework by the end of the semester! That's like 50 questions a night, every night, for months. My poor hand is going to fall off from writing all those first letters. My friends and I are hatching a plan to divide up the labor at least. Maybe Amy can do the first 500 questions, I'll take500-1000, Raj will do 1000-1500, and Ted the final 500. Then we'll pass around our answers and copy them so we can avoid the majority of the busywork. It's a solid plan in theory, but I just know there'll be some ridiculously hard ones that nobody gets right. Like "_ccletic _ifflopic _utons are all the _age among_vangelical _ramungrits these days." How are any of us supposed to decipher crazy sentences like that?Don't get me wrong, I know doing activities that stretch your vocabulary and reasoning abilities is important for learning a language. But 2,000 of the most diabolically trickyfill-in-the-blanks imaginable? Assigned all at once? By the time I'm done with this stupid book, half my brain cells will be dead from overexertion.Well, wish me luck. If you don't hear from me for a couple months, it's because I'll be spending every waking hour conjugating blank lines until my soul shrivels up and my pencil cracks in two. Advanced edition, here I come!篇22000 F_____ L______ F___-i_-t__-B______ Q_________ f__ M______ S______ E______: A_________ E______As a middle school student striving to improve my English skills, I was thrilled when our teacher announced we would be doing an "Advanced Edition" set of 2000 first letterfill-in-the-blank questions. However, many others felt like brain teasers wrapped in an enigma, with first letters that could map to multiple possibilities.I vividly remember one q_______ t___ h__ e_______ s_______: "T__ m____ c______ f______ f___ t__ n_____ c_____ w__ t_______ u___ t__h____ r___." After spending far too long stuck on "c_____" (I mistakenly thought "cable"), I finally realized it was "c_____" (camel) - those famously stubborn pack animals perfectly suited for desert travel.Another immensely satisfying moment was cracking aq________ w____ m_______: "H__ m_____ d________ m______m_________ m________ o___ t__ m_______ m_______." Seeing that first "m" instantly set my mind whirring through a flurry of potential "-m" words before I landed on "meadow" - a grassy field covered in wildflowers. Picturing that vibrant scene truly brought the sentence to life.Of course, not every q_______ w__ q____ t___ s______ o__l_______ l______. Some of the trickier ones involved more obscure vocabulary or played cruelly with words that could start the same way (like "p______" - was it "plumber" or "pineapple"?). When I struggled, I found it helpful to use contextual clues, grammar patterns, and even silly memory tricks. For "T__ p______ p_______ p______ p______ p________ p______ o___ t__ p_____," I just had to imagine a tongue-twisting parade of purple...something...until the image of delightfully plump "plums" finally clicked. As the weeks progressed, I could feel my brain expanding, stretching to accommodate new words and spelling patterns. Breakfast became an amusing linguistic battlefield, my family snickering as I attempted queries like "P___, c__ I h___ s___ o______j____ w____ m_ t_____?" What started as a groan-worthy English exercise gradually became a fun brainteaser game.By the time we reached the final few hundred questions, my confidence was soaring. I didn't dread seeing those blanked-out letters anymore - I craved them, eager to flex my hard-earned skills and knock each quiz out of the proverbial park. When at last we tackled that final, 2000th fill-in-the-blank query, it was an unbelievable rush. Maybe the word itself was something relatively tame (I honestly can't recall), but conquering that mammoth set of questions filled me with an incredible sense of achievement. We had climbed the mountain, and the view from the summit was spectacular.Looking back on this intensive experience, I can definitely say those 2000 first letter fill-in-the-blank questions, while tremendously challenging, were an invaluable exercise that truly leveled-up my English abilities. My spelling improved tremendously, and I developed a much richer vocabulary arsenal. Just as importantly, I cultivated perseverance, creativity in problem-solving, and confidence in tackling daunting tasks head-on.So to any other middle school English learners out there, I highly encourage you to seek out challenging first letterfill-in-the-blank question sets like this "Advanced Edition." It may seem intimidating at first, but if you stick with it, you'll be amazed at how much you grow. Bring It On!As an English learner in middle school, I live for a good challenge. That's why I was stoked when my teacher announced we'd be doing 2000 first letter fill-in-the-blank questions to really put our vocabulary skills to the test. Finally, somenext-level material to sink my teeth into!At first, I'll admit, even I was a bit intimidated by the sheer number of questions. 2000? That's a lot of blank spaces to fill. But my competitive spirit kicked in and I knew this was my chance to prove my English prowess. The first few hundred questions were a breeze - just a warm up really. Words like 'a_cept' and 'b_lieve' were child's play. I flew through them with ease, feeling quite smug. This was going to be a piece of cake. Then we hit the 300s and things started getting trickier. Suddenly I was staring down the barrel of 'q_ixotic' and'p_omulgate'. Okay, now we're talking! I had to real_y put mybr_in to work for those obscure vocabulary words.By the 500s, I was d_voring my dictionary, frantically looking up def_nitions. 'H_ckles' raised on the back of my neck as Ireal_zed these were no l_nger warm-up q_estions. The level of d_fficulty was r_pidly r_mping up.As I cr_ssed into the 600s, sweat began to b_ad on my forep_ead. Forming the correct words from just /_nitial l_tters was like m_ntally u_tangling the m_st c_mplex /_nagram. Wh_ch l_tter c_mbination m_ant 'r_cluse'? I had to re_lly _str_tch my voc_bulary to its l_mits.The 700s were where I h_t the proverb_ial wall. I wasgr_pping at str_ws, ma_ing wild gu_sses at the rem_ining bl_nks. Was it 'o_durate' or 'o_noxious'? Who kn_w anymore...my br_in was turned to an _xhausted p_ol of alphabet s_up.Somehow, thr_ugh sh_er determ_nation and l_xicalacr_batics, I power_d thr_ugh to the 900s. These qu_stions felt more like _nigmas th_n v_cabulary ex_rcises. Wh_t onarth was the meaning of 'q_andar'? I was f_eling d_fluent in my _wn n_tive tongue.By some mir_cle, I limped across the fin_sh line of qu_stion 2000. My formerly conf_dent penm_nship was reduced to afr_ntic sc_ibble, just try_ng to k_ep up. I hadeen dra_ned of ev_ry last droof voc_bulary kn_wledge.As I basked in the sweet rel_ef of complet_on, panting from ment_l exhaust_on, I felt an immense sense of pr_de. Out of the thousands of quest_ons, maybe I'd gotten a couple hundred wrong - but I had surv_ved! I had conquere_ the Everest ofEng_ish tests. From that day forward, no voc_bulary ch_llenge could daunt me. Br_ng on the GRE w_rd lists, the SAT an_logy secti_ns - heck, even-an unabr_dged Engl_sh thes_urus! Thanks to th_se first letter fill-_n-the-blanks, my mastery of the Engl_sh language was truly insurmount_ble.。

Passage 1Here' s a story about Ming' s life on the waters. Ming has lived all his life on a wide r 1 in China. His home is a large house-boat with a roof, one of hundreds that move up and down. In about six years he has not once been on I 2 but he is never lonely. He is a strong swimmer. In fact, he could swim before he could walk. When he wants to play with his f 3 he just swims across to their boats or asks them to v 4 him.Ming's father is a fisherman, but he never u 5 a line or a net〔网〕.Great black birds called cormorants do the fishing for him. Rings 〔I倒〕have been put around the birds* n 6 so that they cannot eat the fish they catch. They have been t 7 to bring the fish to people. And then people reward 〔奖励〕them with a fine big fish as soon as their work is f 8 . Ming loves watching the cormorants, but better still he likes going s 9 with hismother. The shops, of course, are boats very like his o 10 ・1.river2. land3. friends4.visit5. uses6. necks7. taught/trained8. finished9. shopping 10. own【解析】本篇短文第一句“关于明的在水上的生活〞,给大家一个总体的信息,重点是the waters 而且时态为现在时.1. 本空的ask them to ** him和or之前的swims across to their boats是相互对应的,要么Ming去朋友那里,要么他的朋友来看他,所以填visit,表示拜访的意思.5. Passage 2Can animals be made to work for people? Some scientists think that one day animals may be trained to do a number of simple jobs i 1 of people. They say that at a circus 〔杂技场〕,for example, we may see elephants, monkeys, dogs and other animals doing q 2 skillful 〔熟练的〕things. Perhaps you have seen them on the television or in a film. If you watch closely, you may find that the trainer always g 3 the animal some sugar o 4 a piece of fruit as a reward. The scientists say that many d 5 animals may be trained to do a lot of simple things if they know they will get a reward f 6 doing that.Of course, as we know, dogs can be trained to look after a house, and soldiers in both old and modern t 7 have u 8 geese to give warning 〔警报〕by m 9 a lot of noise when an enemy comes near. And also it may be possible to train animals to work in families or f 10 .1. instead2. quite3. gives 4,or 5. different 6. for 7. times 8. used 9. making 10. factories【解析】本篇短文的首句,用一个疑问句来提出了“动物可以为人类工作?〞,说明本篇文章将围绕此问题展开,而且时态为现在时.2. 此题的逻辑词是or,表示选择性,说明本空也是一个表示地点的词,并且同样是由介词in引导,所以不能填farm 〔onthefarms〕而且应该和families照应,要用复数形式, 填factories 〔>Passage 3In recent years, playing kite-board seems to become more and more popular in Alaska in America. It is a new and old game. The game has w 1 the interest of many young people. The game is interesting but a little d 2 . One needs to play it very c 3 .A kite-board is in fact a skateboard 〔滑雪板〕drawn 〔拉〕by a few big flying kites. The old game was p 4 by some young people in Holland and Spain as e 5 as the last century. Since the board was hard to control, f 6 people dared 〔敢〕to play it. With the development of the design of kite and skateboard, many people can I 7 how to play it. A kite board may go asf 8 as about 50 kilometers an hour. If you haven' t had any practice, you' d better not play it. It is not s 9 .It is said that the game can exercise not only your b 10 but also the sensitivity of your brain 〔大脑的敏捷〕.1.won2.difficult/dangerous3. carefully4. played5.early6. few7.learn8. fast9. safe 10. body【解析】通过本文第一句,可以得知文章的中央主体是kite-board 〔风筝板,冲浪运动的一种,可以借助风力飞上天〕.1. Passage 4British Milkman Steve Leech saved some shops and flats with milk and won a National Bravery Award 〔国家勇敢奖〕.Leech, 35 years old, said that when he was sending out milk as u 1 along Pine Street, he s 2 heard a loud, strange sound behind him and then he saw smoke coming out of a shop in Cornwall, southern England. "That must be a fire, 11 3 " Leech said. 44Then I quickly d 4 to do something. So I p 5 the door in and then I s 6 for the people inside. Then I started pouring milk e 7 . He used 320 pints of milk to stop the fire. When firefighters r 8 the shop, the fire was under control.Leech helped save the I 9 of eight people in the flats above the shops."It was hard work o 10 all those bottles. But it was even harder trying to tell my boss where all the milk had gone," Leech said jokingly.ual2.suddenly3.thought4. decided5. pushed6.shouted7. everywhere8. reached9.lives 10. opening【解析】文章首句已经点明了主要内容:Leech用牛奶救了好多家商店和公寓,所以赢得了国家勇敢奖. Passage 5April Fools' Day is on April 1st. People can play j 1 on others on this special d 2 . If you succeed, you usually laugh and say “April Fool! 仔细分析句子会发现,who has been fooled by you是一个定语从句修饰先行词the person,解释为“那个被你愚弄的人〞,因此主语是the person,仍然是单数形式. Passage 6Mr King taught English in a middle school. He was very b 1 all the time and couldn' t do some r 2 So he left the school and opened a book shop in the c 3 of the town. It wasn' t big enough but all the books were nice and most people liked to buy some there. When the shop was c 4 he could read at home. He knew a lot and the learned 〔有学问的〕people were glad to make f 5 with him.It was Sunday and it was cold outside. Mr King was very busy. At nine in the evening all the buyers left e 6a girl. She was dressed up and waited for s 7 there. Standing by theshelves, she looked over the books one after a 8 It made them in a fearful mess 〔凌乱不堪〕.Mr King came up to her and asked, “ Excuse me, madam. What can I do for you? 〞" Your books are all dull/' s aid the girl, “I want a d 9 one." "That' s easy,〞 Mr King smiled. He t 10 out a cookbook and said, “Here you are, madam."1. busy2.reading3.center4.closed5.friends6.except7.someone/somebody8.another9.delicious 10. took【解析】本篇文章主要说了Mr King的书店遇到的一个故事,记叙文形式.1. 所以说明他很喜欢读书,填reading.3. 关键在于弄清楚all the buyers和a girl之间的关系. 固定词组搭配,拿出一本书的词组为take out a book,这里用过去时,改成took. Passage 7Once Effendi had a joke with the Prime Minister 〔首相〕.He said the Minister w 1 die the next day. The next day, the Minister really f 2 off the horse and died. When the king h 3 of this, he got angry and sent his men to c 4 Effendi at once.W 5 Effendi came, the king shouted a 6 " Effendi, since you knew when my minister would die, you must also know the date of your own death. Say it out, or you' II die today.**Effendi I 7 at the king and answered, “ But how can I know? I t II die two days e 8 than you.vThe king was a 9 that he would die if he killed Effendi. He thought he must keep Effendi alive 〔活着〕as long as he could. So he I 10 him go.1.would2. fell3. heard4. catch5. when6. angrily7. looked8.earlier9. afraid 10. let【解析】本文主要表达了Effedndi开玩笑的事情,所以整个文章处于过去的基调.1. 此题的提示在后句,he thought he must keep Effendi alive as long ashe could,从本句可以看出,国王为了不让自己死去,所以要让Effendi活着,表现出国王的害怕,所以填afraid o10. Passage 8Roy Trenton drove a taxi before. A short while ago, however, he b 1 a bus-driver and he feels no sorry about it. He was finding his new work far more i 2 . When he was driving along Catford Street recently, he saw two thieves r 3 out of a shop and run towards a waiting car. One of them was carrying a bag f 4 of money. Roy acted quickly and drove the bus straight to the thieves. The one w 5 the money got so afraid that he dropped the bag. As the thieves were trying to get a 6 in their car, Roy drove his bus into the b 7 of it. While the car was moving away, Roy stopped his bus and t 8 the police. The thieves, car was badly damaged 〔损坏〕and e 9 to recognize 〔辨认〕.Shortly afterwards, the police stopped the car and both men were c 101.became2.interesting3. run4.full5. with6. a way7. back8.telephoned9. easy 10. caught【解析】本文主要表达了Roy Trenton用公交车抓贼的事情,整个文章处于过去的基调而且连贯性强.1. 一起〞的介词是with.6. Passage 9Now, let' s begin our sports report. Here' s a really good game, the b 1 one I have seen this year. It' s the last five minutes of the g 2 Henry plays football f 3 France. He has the ball now. He p 4 the ball to David. David k 5 it over the heads of the Englishmen towards the goal. But he' s too far a 6 , France and England still have onegoal each and there are only two m 7 left of the game. Just then an English p 8 gets the ball. He gives it to Bill, “ King of the match 〞 . Bill puts the ball into the goal. In the e 9 the English team w 10 .1.best2. game3. for4.passes5. kicks6. away7. minutes 8. player 9. end 10. wins【解析】本篇文章为一场足球解说,而且所有动词都用一般现在时形式.1. I have seen this year也提示出应该用最高级,所以填best.2.
