1.1. Background Information

Antarctica

In Antarctica, the landscape is reduced to its barest elements: ice, rock, water and sky. But within those elements are surprising variations, both subtle and dramatic. Ice appears in endless shapes, forms, colors----from floes and bergs to sheets and shelves.

It’s no exaggeration to call Antarctica the coldest, windiest and driest p lace on Earth. The average continental temperature is around –36 degree centigrade.

Ice, volcanoes, snow, birds (including albatross), mountains, penguins (seven species), elephant seals, glaciers, whales and fascinating barren scenery are Antarctica’s mai n attractions.

2) Have you ever lived in a house made of ice? If not, would you like to live in one?

3) Can you imagine what would happen to you if you would like to live in a house made of ice? List the things you may need.

2.1. Read the new words twice loudly and correctly.

2.2. Scan the text once and try to answer the following questions.

1) Why do people from all over the world come to Sweden’s far north?
