English explorer Henry Hudson in 1609 sailed up the river that now bears his name. He was working for a Dutch company. The company started a settlement at the mouth of the Hudson in 1624. The history of New York begins around 10000 BC, when the first Native Americans arrived. By 1100 AD, New York's main tribes, the Iroquoian (易洛魁)and Algonquian(阿尔冈琴) cultures, had developed.
