高一英语阅读理解强化训练Day 1Passage 1Why is setting goals important? Because goals can help you do and experience everything you want in life. Instead of just letting life happen to you, goals allow you to make your life happen.Successful and happy people have a vision of how their life should be and they set lots of goals to help them reach their vision. By setting goals you are taking control of your life. It's like having a map to show you where you want to go. Think of it this way. There are two drivers. One has a destination in mind (her goal) which is laid out for his on a map. He can drive straight there surely without any wasted time or wrong turns. The other driver has no goal or destination or map. He starts off at the same time from the same place as the first driver, but he drives aimlessly around, never getting anywhere, just using up gas and oil. Which driver do you want to be?Winners in life set foals and follow through on them. Winners decide what they want in life and then get there by making plans and setting goals. Unsuccessful people just let life happen by accident. Goals aren't difficult to set, and they aren't difficult to reach. It's up to you to find out what your goals, ideas and visions really are. You are the one who must decide what to pursue and in what direction to aim your life.Research tells us that when we write a goal down we are more likely to achieve it. Written goals can be reviewed regularly, and have more power. Like a contract with yourself, they are harder to neglect or forget. Also when you write your goals in a particular fashion, you are able tostimulate yourself to be continuously alert to the situations that will further your goals.1. The example of the two drivers was given to show ________ .A. the importance of having a map and right directionB. the foolishness of the second driverC. the importance of setting goalsD. the foolishness of the first driver2. According to this passage, the most important thing in realizing one's ideal is to ________ .A. have a clear understanding of what he or she wants in lifeB. let others help him or her to make his or her dream come trueC. try to be realistic about one's abilityD. let others understand him or her first, then work together with them3. What is the main idea of this passage? ________A. Failure always accompanies the people who give up easily.B. Whenever you set goals, you will succeed.C. Winners never stop their efforts for success.D. Success is possible only when a person has clearly set his or her goal.Passage 2In the United States, some people mark ballots (选票) that bear the printed names of candidates. Others pull levers in voting machines. Americans are proud of their long history of holding free elections, but they did not invent the process.Free elections were held in Athens, Greece, 2400 years ago. Some Europeans tookpart in local free elections during the Middle Ages. The secret ballot was first used in 1858 in Australia.Today, voting is a new experience for many of the world's peoples. Since World II, many who never had a voice in their government now take part in free elections. When India held its first national elections in 1951 and 1952, the process was so complicated that it took four months. Few people could read, so the ballots bore pictures that stood for the different parties. People who wanted to vote for Gandhi's Congress party, for example, put an X under the picture of yoked oxen.In our hemisphere, there are also voters who cannot read. The Dominican Republic held its first free national election in 1962 with rainbow﹣coloured ballots. The different colors identified the parties for people who could not read the candidates'names.Today, computers are changing the way people vote. In 1974, Mexico set up a computerized voting system. In the future, people all over the world may be able to vote by touching computer screens. These screens could show candidates' names, pictures, or party symbols.Any change that encourages people to vote helps government work. Orgeon lets people vote by mail. Texas has voting in convenient spots such as malls. As long as people want to have a voice in the government, they will try new ways of voting.1. Why did ballots in India bear pictures? ________A. Because pictures could stand for different parties.B. Because many voters couldn't read candidates'names.C. Because Gandi's Congress Party liked the pictures of oxen.D. Because the process of election was very complicated.2. We can infer from the passage that ________ .A. People all over the world have been voting for 2, 400 yearsB. Americans invented the process of free electionsC. The first secret ballot was invented in AthensD. Many people didn't have the right to vote until World War Ⅱ3. On the whole, the passage tells about________ .A. complicated elections in America and EuropeB. the right way to carry out the free electionC. how people vote in many parts of the worldD. how free election developed in the western countryPassage 3The Internet has become part of teenage life. While most of them get useful information and use the Internet to help in their studies, some are not using it in a good way. Many are playing online games too much. A few even visit Web sites they should not look at. Bad things can happen if young people spend too much time on the Internet. In order to help young people use the Internet in a good way, a textbook has started to be used in some Shanghai middle schools this term. It uses real examples to teach students all about good ways of using the Internet. It gives useful advice such as itsgood to read news or find helpful information to study. The name of every British town and city, however, has a long history. Two thousand years ago, most people living in Britain were Celts. Even the word “Britain” is Celtic. Then the Romans arrived and built camps which became cities called “castra”. This is why there are so many place names in England which end in “--chester” or “--caster” – Manchester, for example. The Romans never reached Wales or Scotland, and many place names there are Celtic (凯尔特语的). For example, Welsh place names that begin with “Llan” come from the Celtic word for church. After the Romans left Britain, it was attacked by tribes (部落) called the Anglo--Saxons who were from the area of Europe that is now Germany and Holland. Without the Roman army, it was impossible to protect the country from these people. The names of their villages often ended in “--ham” or “--ton”. Some got their name from the leader of the village, so Birmingham, for example, means “Beormund’s village”.The Anglo--Saxons were farmers and the landscape was very important to them, so we have villages called Upton (“village on a hill” – a good place to build a village) and Moreton (“village by a lake”, where floods could make life tough). Place names that end in “--ford” (a place where you could cross a river) also describe the location of Anglo--Saxon villages.Twelve hundred years ago, the Vikings came to England from Scandinavia. They traded with the Anglo--Saxons but lived in their own villages. These often ended in “--by” or “--thorpe”. The name “Kirkby” means “a village with a church” and Scunthorpe was the village of a man called Skuma. Finally, in 1066, England became Norman – the Normans gave us the place name“grange”, which means farm. And how about London? Experts cannot agree. The Romans called the city Londinium, but they were not the first inhabitants (居民). People once believed that the United Kingdom’s capital city got its name from the castle (城堡) of a King called Lud, but this is very unlikely. Our best guess today is that the name comes from a Celtic word meaning a fastflowing river. Like a number of British place names, its history is lost in time.1. The origin of British place names is unfamiliar to many local people because of ______.A. the death of ancient languagesB. their lack of interest in the namesC. the long lost history of the namesD. the frequent changes to the names2. According to the article, Stratford--upon--Avon is most likely a town built______.A. beside a riverB. near a castleC. on a hillD. with a church3. Which of the following shows the correct order of the arrival of inhabitants in Britain?A. The Celts--The Romans--The Vikings--The Normans--The Anglo SaxonsB. The Celts--The Romans--The Anglo Saxons--The Vikings--The NormansC. The Romans--The Celts--The Vikings--The Anglo Saxons--The NormansD. The Romans--The Anglo Saxons--The Celts--The Normans--The Vikings4. According to the text, where did the name for London come from?A. It is short for Londinium.B. It’s from the term for a river.C. It is puzzling and hard to confirm.D. It comes from the castle of a King.参考答案Passage 11. C推理判断题。

高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 152

高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 152Passage 1College students constantly hear the praises of education. We have all become used to believing that a college education is always a guarantee of an easier life. I was nine years old when my fourth-grade teacher presented me with a task, to write down all of the things I wanted in my life. I filled my paper with things like: own a big house and have servants; be rich and have a good job. The next day my teacher handed back my paper and in red ink she wrote: “GO TO COLLEGE.” For a long time, I was convinced that once I obtained an education, BAM! Life would be easier. However, education cannot promise all wishes, dreams, and desires. Society must reject the foolish idea that a college education’s main purpose is to satisfy our desires and secure success. Like most challenging things, education is a gamble (赌博) in which results depend entirely on people’s ability to look past their wants to see the realism and reason behind their wants. For instance, my first year of college, I took a sociology class. In class, we were taught that Third World countries were poor. We learned that our quality of life would be almost impossible for an average person in those countries. I began to examine my own desire to be rich. To always go after money felt selfish when knowing others had none at all. Learning about other society’s financial situations forced me to look beyond what I wanted.Through the process of education, everything once desired is tested. Wanting something no longer is enough; it’s more important to examine why we want it andwhether we really want it. When my desire for money changed, everything changed. I stopped longing for money-driven careers and stopped valuing the people who had them. I began to examine the things I purchased and my reason for wanting them.Education is a tool to be used to develop and advance our desires, so we can discover the things that are truly significant in life. Education is a source to expand our society to see beyond the superficial (表面的) appeals and the “quick fixes”, leaving the belief of an effortless life behind in order to desire a meaningful one.1. The author’s fourth-grade teacher probably agreed that ______.A. the author was an ambitious studentB. the author should set more realistic goalsC. a college student would lead an easier lifeD. a college degree was the key to the author’s dreams2. Why does the author mention her sociology class?A. To share her learning experiences with readers.B. To support her new understanding about education.C. To express her sympathy for people in Third World.D. To stress the importance of taking a sociology course.3. With a college education, the author ______.A. envied rich peopleB. lost interest in careerC. desired more material thingsD. stopped always seeking more wealth4. What’s the main idea of the passage?A. College education promises an effortless life.B. College education tests and guides our life desires.C. College education offers solutions to social problems.D. College education turns young people into gamblers.Passage 2Running on EmptyFor almost a century, scientists have assumed, tiredness—or exhaustion—in athletes originates(起源于) in the muscles. Precise explanations have varied, but all have been based on the “Limitations Theory”. In other words, muscles tire because they hit a physical limit: they either run out of fuel or oxygen or they drown in harmful by-products(副产品).In the past few years, however, Timothy Noakes from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, has examined this standard theory. Tiredness, he argues, is caused not by signals springing from overtaxed muscles, but is an emotional response which begins in the brain. The fundamental nature of his new theory is that the brain paces the muscles to keep them well back from the edge of exhaustion. When the brain decides it’s time to quit, it creates unbearable muscle tiredness. This “Central Governor” theory remains controversial, but it does explain many puzzling aspects of athletic performance.A recent discovery that Noakes calls the “lactic acid paradox” made him startresearching this area seriously. Lactic acid is a by-product of exercise, and the increase of it is often mentioned as a cause of tiredness. But when research subjects exercise in certain conditions created artificially, they become tired even though lactic acid levels remain low. Nor has the oxygen content of their blood fallen too low for them to keep going. Obviously, something else was making them tire before they hit either of these physiological limits.Noakes conducted an experiment with seven cyclists. It has long been known that during exercise, the body never uses 100% of the available muscle fibres(纤维). The amount used varies, but in some tasks such as this cycling test the body calls on about 30%. His team found that as tiredness set in, the electrical activity in cyclist’s legs declined—even when they were making a great effort to cycle as fast as they could. To Noakes, this was strong evidence that the old theory was wrong. “The cyclists may have felt completely exhausted,” he says, “but their bodies actually had considerable reserves that they could theoretically tap by using a greater amount of the resting fibres.” This, he believes, is the proof that the brain is regulating the pace of the workout to hold the cyclists well back from the point of extreme tiredness.1. Which of the following is supported by “the Limitations Theory”?A. Tiredness is caused by signals from brain.B. Athletes feel tired when they use up all their energy.C. The body uses 100% of the muscle fibres in exercise.D. Athletes become tired though lactic acid levels remain low.2. Noakes has found out that ___________.A. muscle fibres control athletes’ movementsB. Lactic acid levels remain high in cycling testC. mental processes control the symptoms of tirednessD. different exercises use different amount of muscle fibres3. It is likely that both theories accept that ___________.A. lactic acid is produced in muscles during exerciseB. the oxygen content in blood may rise after sportsC. tiredness is a harmful by-product of exerciseD. the energy in human bodies can be balanced4. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A. The description of a new test.B. The explanation of the theory.C. The puzzling evidence of a study.D. The whole process of the research.Passage 3For the brave in the armed forces, being sent away from home for months at a time is just part of the duty. However, it’s never an easy one to perform especially for those with children. So, when I found out I was going to stay in South Korea for a year, I was nervous about how my five children, particularly my eldest daughter Abigail, would take the news since it meant I wouldn’t be home to see her graduate from high school. To my surprise, Abigail told me not to worry and even suggested we make thenews known among family members. “We’ve been lucky you haven’t had to be sent abroad yet. Anyway, we can get connected through the Internet. See me on your phone on my spot.” Abigail said. She stepped into many of my roles when I was gone. I wanted to find a way to thank her and show her how proud I was of her. I started planning the special surprise when my request to return home a few weeks earlier to attend Abigail’s graduation ceremony was approved. When my time in South Korea finally came to an end, I flew home, rented a car, and stayed in a hotel. And on Abigail’s graduation day, I hid in an office behind the stage waiting until I heard my daughter’s name called. I just kept thinking “Don’t cry. Don’t trip in your heels. Don’t fall over.” At last! Abigail was up on stage. I slipped up behind her, whispered in her ear, and around she turned! “I was just thinking, like, ‘You aren’t supposed to be here. What? What? How? ’ It was the biggest shock. . . I’m pretty sure my dad made people he didn’t even know cry. Emotional for everyone.” Abigail cried. You know what followed: embraces, kisses, tears, laughs, flowers, wishes. . . ; aren’t they what a family have in store?1. The meaning of family tieD. The way to plan a big surprisePassage 4That China will not play in the Football World Cup has not prevented Chinese soccer fans from taking part in the exhilaration of the sports gala in Russia. Reports say Chinese fans have bought over 40, 000 tickets, more than Spanish and English fans. They have also booked 16 percent of the hotel rooms in the host cities in Russia. Except for actually playing, China will take part in almost every other aspect of the World Cup. Chinese companies have made the balls to be used in the World Cup and the official mascot Zabivaka. And the air-conditioning system in the newly built Mordovia Stadium in Saransk has been provided by Chinese companies as well. Fans can also get WorldCup special coins that are made in Nanjing.“It is no secret that China has a key role in our plan to develop football around the globe. It must play.” said FIFA secretary-general Fatma Samoura during her visit to Beijing last year. FIFA has set a target of making 60 percent of the world’s population take part in soccer by 2026. And China, thanks to its huge population, will play an important role in realizing that goal. Although China is ranked between 80 to 90 in the world soccer standing, it has more than 200 million soccer fans. Moreover, ten Chinese super league players are making Chinese fans proud by shouldering national duty for their countries in the World Cup.China has almost all the conditions needed for the healthy development of soccer. Hopefully, the World Cup will encourage the decision-makers to focus on ordinary people to develop the sport. In the 1950s, the government at various levels built a large number of ping-pong tables in urban residential communities, which attracted a large number of people to play ping-pong. The result is that China remains the best in the sport. But even in Beijing, where public sports facilities are the most developed in the country, children find it hard to get a chance to play in the limited number of soccer fields. If the government wants to raise the level of soccer in China, they should first improve the soccer facilities in the country.1. To set an example of how to develop a sport among ordinary people.C. To attract more people to play ping-pong.D. To indicate that soccer is less popular than ping-pong.4. From which is the text probably taken? ________A. An advertisementB. A daily newspaperC. A research paperD. A travel guidebookPassage 5Steven Stein likes to follow garbage trucks. His strange habit makes sense when you consider that he's an environmental scientist who studies how to reduce litter, including things that fall off garbage trucks as they drive down the road. What is even more interesting is that one of Stein's jobs is defending an industry behind the plastic shopping bag.Americans use more than 100 billion thin film plastic bags every year. So many end up in tree branches or along highways that a growing number of cities do not allow them at checkouts (收银台). The bags are prohibited in some 90 cities in California, including Los Angeles. Eyeing these headwinds, plastic-bag makers are hiring scientists like Stein to make the case that their products are not as bad for the planet as most people assume.Among the bag makers' arguments: many cities with bans still allow shoppers to purchase paper bags, which are easily recycled but require more energy to produce and transport. And while plastic bags may be ugly to look at, they represent a small percentage of all garbage on the ground today. The industry has also taken aim at the product that has appeared as its replacement: reusable shopping bags. The stronger a reusable bag is, the longer its life and the more plastic-bag use it cancels out. However, longer-lasting reusable bags often require more energy to make. One study found that a cotton bag must be used at least 131 times to be better for the planet than plastic.Environmentalists don't dispute (质疑) these points. They hope paper bags will be banned someday too and want shoppers to use the same reusable bags for years.1. What has Steven Stein been hired to do? ________A. Help increase grocery sales.B. Recycle the waste material.C. Argue for the use of plastic bags.D. Stop things falling off trucks.2. What dose the word "headwinds" in paragraph 2 refer to? ________A. Plastic bags hung in trees.B. Bans on plastic bags.C. Headaches caused by garbage.D. Effects of city development.3. What is a disadvantage of reusable bags according to plastic-bag makers? ________A. They are quite expensive.B. Producing them requires more energy.C. Replacing them can be difficult.D. They are less strong than plastic bags.4. What is the best title for the text? ________A. Recycle or Throw AwayB. Industry, Pollution and EnvironmentC. Plastic, Paper or NeitherD. Garbage Collection and Waste Control参考答案Passage 11. D推理判断题。

They talked with them and gave massages (按摩) to patients kept in their beds.I felt sorry that I could not offer more to these people than talking with them and trying to cheer them up. said Deng Yetao, 20, a third-year student. "But it occurred to me that they need more care and love than babies. They are afraid of the coming death. Their loneliness is worse than physical pains. ""Even though they are suffering a lot, the majority of the elderly people want to talk to us. Each of them has a lot of life experiences and philosophies to share. Instead of doing them a favor, I felt I was gaining a valuable lesson. Said Mao Xiaohua, another third ﹣year student.Mao talked with two elderly patients for a whole afternoon. The fact that most of the patients in the 80-room clinic are aged people with diseases which will lead to death soon made the volunteers' hearts heavy.Ninety ﹣one percent of the patients will spend the last days of their lives in the clinic, according to a survey by the hospital.Daily visits and services by social workers and youth volunteers are a very important part of their program. "While we teach, we learn, " said Roman philosopher Seneca. Now scientists are bringing this ancient wisdom up to date. They're documenting why teaching is such a fruitful w ay to learn, and designing creative ways for young people to take part in instruction.Researchers have found that students who sign up to tutor others work harder to understand the material, recall it more accurately and apply it more effectively. Student teachers score higher on tests than pupils who're learning only for their ow n sake. But how can children, still learning themselves, teach others? One answer:They can tutor younger kids. Some studies have found that first﹣born children are more intelligent than their later﹣born siblings(兄弟姐妹). This suggests their higher IQs result from the time they spend teaching their siblings. Now educators are experimenting with ways to apply this model to academic subjects. They arrange college undergraduates to teach computer science to high school students, who in turn instruct middle school students on the topic. But the most cutting﹣edge tool under development is the "teachable agent" ﹣a computerized character who learns, tries, makes mistakes and asks questions just like a real﹣world pupil.Computer scientists have created an animated(动画的)figure called Betty's Brain, who has been "taught" about environmental science by hundreds of middle school students. Student teachers are inspired to help Betty master certain materials. While preparing to teach, they organize their know ledge and improve their own understanding. And as they explain the information to it, they identify problems in their own thinking.Feedback from the teachable agents further improves the tutors' learning. The agents' questions forces student tutors to think and explain the materials in different ways, and watching the agent solve problems allows them to see their knowledge put into action.Above all, it's the emotions one experiences in teaching that improve learning. Student tutors feel upset when their teachable agents fail, but happy when these virtual pupils succeed as they develop pride and satisfaction from someone else's accomplishment.1. What do we learn about Betty's Brain ? ________A. It is a character in a popular animation.B. It is a teaching tool under development.C. It is a cutting﹣edge app in digital games.D. It is a tutor for computer science students.2. How does teaching others benefit student tutors? ________A. It makes them aware of what they are strong at.B. If you are thinking of heading to Paris for a study period, then perhaps a little reality check is in order. But my experience was a romantic one.I paved my path to Paris through an exchange program. On arrival in Paris, I was constantly reminded of the official processes I was required to complete-forms to be filled in, meetings to attend, the list seemed endless. Then the real work began. Once classes were underway, I found myself volunteering to do oral presentations and assignments first, rather than last. This method turned out to be very helpful.Once I had finished class for the week, I had an ever-increasing list of museumsto visit, neighborhoods to explore, cafés to sit in, and parks to run around. Read as many books about Paris as you can. Talk to as many locals and other foreigners living there as you can. The one thing that reading a book or talking to someone cannot do is to provide you with the experience of wandering Paris on foot. I discovered some of my favorite places in Paris by wandering. The people watching, the sounds of the city, the colors as the seasons change, they all add to the ecstasy that is experiencing Paris as an exchange student. On my last day in Paris, I confidently said, "Bonjour Monsieur, " as I passed the little store down the street. I guess no matter how hard I tried I was always going to be an outsider, a tourist. The best part about going on exchange in Paris is falling in love with the city in your own unique way. Everyone's experience of Paris is different. I know mine is unique and special to me, my own little pieces of Paris.1. What does the passage mainly tell us? ________A. An exchanged student's life.B. Charming neighborhoods.C. An exchanged program.D. A traveling experience.2. What does the underlined word "ecstasy" in Paragraph 4 probably mean? ________A. Courage.B. Imagination.C. Happiness.D. 高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 201Passage 1It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2016. While most people were warming up their cars, Trevor, my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work. On arrival, he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor (劳动), he returned to find his bike gone. The bike, a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport. Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his family. And the bike was also used to get groceries (食品杂货), saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story. Shortly after that, several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, and then called my husband to pick it up. Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job. It really is an honor that a stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so. This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in human as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we can share with others. No matter how big or how small, an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.1. Why was the bike so important to the couple? ________A. The man's job was bike racing.B. It was their only means of transportation.C. It was a nice Kona 18 speed.D. They used it for work and daily life.2. We can infer from the text that ________ .A. the couple worked 60 hours a weekB. people were busy before ChristmasC. the bike was lost because of Trevor's carelessnessD. life was hard for the author's family3. How did people get to know the couple's problem? ________A. From radio broadcasts.B. From a newspaper.C. From TV news.D. From a stranger.4. What do the couple learn from their experience? ________A. Strangers are usually of little help.B. One should take care of their bike.C. News reports make people famous.D. An act of kindness can mean a lot.Passage 2He was the baby with no name. Found and taken from the north Atlantic 6 days after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, his tiny body so moved the salvage (救援) workers that they called him "our baby. " In their home port of Halifax, Nova Scotia, people collected money for a headstone in front of the baby's grave (墓), carved with the words: "To the memory of an unknown child" He has rested there ever since. But history has a way of uncovering its secrets. On Nov. 5, this year, three members of a family from Finland arrived at Halifax and laid fresh flowers at the grave. "This is our baby, " says Magda Schleifer, 68, a banker. She grew up hearing stories about a great-aunt named Maria Panula, 42, who had sailed on the Titanic for America to be reunited with her husband. According to the information Mrs. Schleifer had gathered, Panula gave up her seat on a lifeboat to search for her five children—including a 13-month-old boy named Eino from whom she had become separated during the final minutes of the crossing. "We thought they were all lost in the sea, " says Schleifer. Now, using teeth and bone pieces taken from the baby's grave, scientists have compared the DNA from the Unknown Child with those collected from members of five families who lost relatives on the Titanic and never recovered the bodies. The result of the test points only to one possible person: young Eino. Now, the family sees: no need for a new grave. "He belongs to the people of Halifax, " says Schleifer. "They've taken care of him for 90 years. "Adapted from People, November 25, 20021. The baby travelled on the Titanic with his ________ .A. motherB. parentsC. auntD. relatives2. What is probably the boy's last name? ________A. SchleiferiB. EinoC. MagdaD. Panula3. Some members of the family went to Halifax and put flowers at the child's grave on Nov. 5 ________ .A. 1912B. 1954C. 2002D. 20044. This text is mainly about how ________ .A. the unknown baby's body was taken from the north AtlanticB. the unknown baby was buried in Halifax, Nova ScotiaC. people found out who the unknown baby wasD. people took care of the unknown baby for 90 yearsPassage 3If you are hitting the gym regularly or exercising at least five days a week, you'll be forgiven for thinking that circulation(血液循环) is great. But Mary Cushman MD. Professor of medicine at the University of Vermont, gave evidence that it's less about the exercise you do, but more about how active you are generally.Dr. Cushman explained if the legs don't move for hours at a time, the blood can begin to clot(凝结), leading to a disease called VTE, simply sitting for long periods can be a primary cause.Scientists consider that TV habits are a good way to judge whether or not someone is living such a sedentary(久坐不动的) lifestyle. Sure enough, the data showed that people who watched TV very often had 1. 7 times the risk of suffering a life-threatening blood clot compared to people who said they seldom or never watched TV. To theresearchers' surprise, they found that even frequent TV watchers who exercised regularly were still 1. 8 times more likely to get a blood clot than exercisers who rarely watched television."You can be physically active and also have sedentary behavior. " said Dr. Cushman. "They aren't just opposites. People who are physically active don't necessarily have low sedentary time. "In other words, regular exercise is important for many health reasons, but it's not enough in itself. We also need to remain active throughout the rest of the day.Dr. Cushman suggests limiting our sitting time to avoid diseases, which includes any long periods such as working at a desk or taking a long flight. She also has two pieces of advice. "Number one is to educate yourself about this disease, " she said. And her second piece of advice is clear. "Keep moving to have a healthy lifestyle. That includes not being sedentary, getting proper physical activity and eating a healthy diet, which will help prevent this disease as well as almost every other disease.1. According to Dr. Cushman, what mainly contributes to VTE? ________A. Sitting too long.B. Eating unhealthily.C. Exercising irregularly.D. Watching TV too frequently.2. From the third paragraph, we can infer that________.A. exercises are more likely to suffer blood clots.B. regular exercise is hardly helpful to people's health.C. TV habits have little relation with sedentary lifestyles.D. avoiding sedentary lifestyle is key to preventing blood clots.3. What do Dr. Cushman's words mean in Paragraph 4? ________A. Being active is opposite to sedentary behavior.B. Physically active people have low sedentary time.C. Physically active people should have sedentary lifestyles.D. People should be active in other time periods besides exercise.4. What does Dr. Cushman mainly talk about in the last paragraph? ________A. How to avoid VTE.B. How to live a long life.C. How to prevent diseases.D. How to change the sedentary lifestyle.Passage 4Like a tired marriage, the relationship between libraries and publishers has long been dull. E- books, however, are causing heartache. Libraries know they need digital wares, but many publishers are too cautious about piracy(盗版) and lost sales to co-operate. Among the big six, only Random House and Harper Collins license e-books with most libraries.Publishers are wise to be nervous. Owners of e-readers(电子阅读器) are exactly the customers they need: book-lovers with money. If these people switch to borrowing e-books instead of buying them, what then? Electronic borrowing is awfully convenient.Unlike printed books, which must be checked out and returned to a physical library miles from where you live, book files can be downloaded at home. The files disappear from the device when they are due.E-lending is not simple, however. There are lots of different and often incompatible(不兼容的) e-book formats, devices and licenses. Most libraries use a company called OverDrive, which secures rights from publishers and provides e-books and audio files in every format. Yet publishers and libraries are worried by Over Drive’s global market dominance(优势), as the company can control fees and conditions. Publishers were annoyed when OverDrive cooperated with Amazon, the world’s biggest online bookseller, last year. Owners of Amazon’s Kindle e-reader who want to borrow e-books from libraries are now redirected to Amazon’s website, where they must use their Amazon account to secure a loan.According to Pew, an opinion researcher, library users are a perfect market for Amazon. Late last year Amazon introduced its Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, which lets its best customers borrow free one of thousands of popular books each month.Library supporters argue that book borrowers are also book buyers and that libraries are vital spaces for readers to discover new works. Many were cheered by a recent Pew survey»which found that more than half of Americans with library cards say they prefer to buy their e-books.So publishers keep adjusting their lending arrangements in search of the right balance.Random House raised its licensing price’s earlier this year, and Harper Collinslimits libraries to lending its titles 26 times.1. It can be inferred from Paragraph 1 that ________.A. several big publishers have sold e-books to librariesB. most publishers are hesitant to cooperate with librariesC. libraries are eager to keep strong relationship with publishersD. libraries and publishers face the same problem of e-books’ piracy2. Why are publishers worried that people will switch to electronic borrowing?A. E-books must be checked out and returned to libraries regularly.B. There is no time limit for the book files downloaded on the device.C. There are lots of different and incompatible e-book formats available.D. Book sales may drop sharply because of convenient electronic borrowing.3. We can learn from the text that ________.A. Amazon is adopting measures to win more customersB. e-books can be lent at libraries as many times as you likeC. Over Drive distributes e-books and audio files to publishersD. over half of Americans are borrowing e-boo from libraries4. What is the best title for the text?A. Online bookstores offer new books and used books that can save you lots of money. They are far better compared to traditional bookstores as they offer much wider kinds of books. Another advantage of buying books online is that you can also read the book reviews as well as readers’ reviews to get an idea whether the book is worth buying. Online bookstores offer great discounts to regular customers which is a big attraction for book lovers. For book lovers, the most important thing is to get books on time. Therefore, you need to find a reliable online bookstore that will be able to provide fast deliveries (送货).Here are some tips to use when choosing an online bookstore. Although the website could be reputable (声誉好的), third-party sellers advertised on their site may not have a good reputation. Never jump at stores that offer super cheap prices, as books sold at such low prices could be in very bad condition. Most of the popular online bookstores offer useful tools. One tool is a wish list tool on its website. You can update (更新) the list of books you wish to buy in the future. 高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 202

高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 202Passage 1People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I’ll share some of my experience. I once took a school year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.One thing I can tell you is that, once you start learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say them in English?” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I am in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It is amazing how much this helps. For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I did not want to make mistakes. Finally I got it over. And while traveling in America, I’d try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.1. How long did the author learn English in Wuhan University?A. A week.B. A Month.C. A term.D. A year.2. What is the good way to improve your English according to the author?A. Reading English books.B. Thinking in English.C. Watching English films.D. Learning English grammar.3. Where did the author improve his English quickly?A. In America.B. In China.C. In the university.D. In the middle school.4. What is the best title for the text?A. My University LifeB. American EnglishC. My English Learning ExperienceD. The Importance of Learning EnglishPassage 2John Robert was born in a farm family and his father was a horse trainer. When John was a child, he often went from one farm to another with his father. Sometimes they didn’t have enough money to pay for food, but John still loved this kind of life. He even hoped to own a horse farm when growing up.When he was in school, his teacher once asked students to write about what they wanted to be and do when they grew up. John wrote a seven-page paper talking about his dream of having a horse farm one day. He even drew a picture of a horse farm on the paper. The next day John handed it to his teacher. Two days later, he got his paper back.On the front page was a large red “F” with some words “See me after class.” And the boy did and asked his teacher, “Why did I get an F?” The teacher said, “This dream will not come true for a young boy like you. Owning a horse farm needs a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for a lot of things. There is no way you could ever do it.” Then the teacher added, “If you write this paper again with a simple dream, I will give you a good grade.”After school he thought about it carefully. At last, he decided to hand in the same paper, making no changes at all. He wrote, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my dream.”Many years later, John had his own 200 acres (英亩) horse farm. His dream came true.So don’t let someone take away your dream. Follow your dreams, no matter what they are.1. What happened to John when he was a child?A. H e hoped to be a teacher.B. He decided to give up college.C. He often went hungry for poverty.D. His father gave him much money.2. What made the teacher give John an F for his paper?A. His bad temper.B. His difficult dream.C. What does the text mainly want us to do?A. Work hard to realize our dream.B. Keep changing our dreams.C. Follow others’ advice.D. Refuse the teachers’ help.Passage 3There is an English saying: "Laughter is best medicine. " Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body. They have found that laughter really can improve people's health.Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercises. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing. It also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial.Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on the body. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated(忍受) the pain for the longest time was the groups which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemicals in the brain which diminish both stress and pain.As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial(有益的) effects similar to those who are caused by laughter.1. The main idea of the passage is________ .A. laughter and physical exercises have similar effects.B. smile can produce the same effects as laughterC. pain can be reduced by laughterD. laughter is best medicine2. The underlined word "diminish" is similar to ________ .A. testB. stopC. reduceD. increase3. Doctors hold laughter clinics________ .A. to give better condition to their patientsB. in order to improve patients' healthC. to make patients smile all the timeD. to prove smile and laughter have the same effectPassage 4January means it's time for coats and gloves and cold weather. While many of us are preparing ourselves for the cold weeks ahead, in some cities winter is the "hottest" season of all because it's the time for winter festivities.Every year 2 million people visit the Sapporo Snow Festival in Japan. This internationally well-known event began in 1950, when some local high-school students built six snow statues in Odori Park. Since then, the festival has grown to include lots of snow sculptures as well as a snow-sculpting contest that draws competitors from all over the world. In December, Finland created its 13th annual Snow Village, which will remain open until April, if weather permits. Snow Village lies nearly 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. The village is designed by builders skilled in working with snow and ice. Visitors can take a tour of the village, eat in a restaurant made of ice or go dancing in the disco igloo(拱形圆顶小屋). They can also spend the night in a hotel made of snow. There's even an ice chapel(小礼拜堂) for couples who want to get married in Snow village.Since 1935, the Fur Rendezvous has been held every February in Anchorage, Alaska, America's most northern state. Among the festival's many attractions is the World Championship Sled Dog Race, which draws sled dog teams from many countries. Dogs also take center stage in the Dog Weight Pull, in which dogs compete to see which one can pull the heaviest weight. The festival features sports like skiing, basketball, boxing and softball as well as the Grand Prix Auto Race in downtown Anchorage. True to the festival's name, there's also a fur auction(拍卖), where buyers buy real Alaskan furs. The first Fur Rendezvous lasted only three days. Now it's a 10-day event that attracts thousands of visitors.1. What can we learn about the Sapporo Snow Festival from the second paragraph?________A. How it got started.B. How long it lasts.C. Who is in charge of it.D. How much it costs to attend it.2. What happens at Snow Village? ________A. Skating matches.B. Design contests.C. Indoor weddings.D. Cooking competitions.3. Anyone who visits the Fur Rendezvous can ________ .A. buy what he wantsB. play any sports he likesC. attend a strength competitionD. come across different sled dogsPassage 5There are a couple different things that make ramen noodles an unhealthy choice. There's not much to these provision packets besides salt and carbohydrates. While those certainly get thrown around quite a bit as "bad-for-you" comments, you may not know how they actually harm your body. Firstly, there's the fact that most instant ramen servings contain over 1100 milligrams of sodium—that's approaching half of themaximum you should eat per day. When you take in that much sodium in a single sitting, your body overcompensates by holding more water. This can cause temporary water weight gain, leaving you feeling bloated(肿胀) and lacking in energy. But while you may feel bloated, chances are you won't feel full. Since the ramen contains lots of refined carbohydrates with virtually no protein or fiber, it's essentially the very definition of empty calories. And you've probably heard the song-and-dance about refined carbs; eating too much can lead your blood sugar to increase and then decrease, leaving you hungry and ready to eat again—which leads to weight gain. And, perhaps most upsetting of all, this quick-and-easy meal may stay with you much longer than you realize. Massachusetts General Hospital's Dr. Braden Kuo used a pill-sized camera to record the digestive tracts of volunteers who ate processed ramen noodles as well as fresh ones. With a video, Dr. Kuo was able to show that, after two hours when the fresh noodles were long gone, the ramen noodles were still there in the intestines.Doctors do know that years of eating the instant packets are linked to poor health. Another study, this one by the Harvard School of Public Health, assessed the long-term consequences of ramen consumption in South Korea, where it's a major course. They found that subjects, women in particular, who ate instant noodles at least twice a week had a 68 percent higher risk of diabetes and heart disease—than subjects who ate a more consistently natural diet.In short, eating ramen once in a while won't damage your health—as is true with most processed foods. But it's not something you should make a habit of—for yourstomach and heart's sake.1. What, according to paragraph 1, specifically contribute to the body harm in ramen? ________A. saltB. carbohydratesC. sodiumD. water2. Which of the following is NOT the harm of ramen to people? ________A. resulting in short-term water weight gainB. much longer digesting process in intestinesC. higher risk of diabetes and heart diseaseD. much addition to salt and carbohydrates3. What does the writer intend to do when writing this passage? ________A. To remind people of the harm done to our health.B. To analyze where the harm of ramen lies in detail.C. To warn people never to form a ramen-eating habit.D. To urge people to think twice before eating ramen.

1.She caught up with her classmates by work hard every day. (work 改为working,介词by 后要用动名词)2. The old man live a hard life when he was young. (live 改为lived,讲述过去的事情)3.A lot of deers are eating grass on the hill. (deers改为deer, deer 的单复数同形)(三)选词填空。

高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 227Passage 1From driving to landing on moon, more and more human tasks are being taken over by artificial intelligence(AI-人工智能). It will make everyday tasks easier and bring benefits to different industries. And yet, like any other technology, AI will also bring risks and dangers. When people mention that AI could be dangerous, they think of the situation in films where an AI program decides to kill or enslave all humans. While this possibility is unlikely for now, there are many other dangers that AI could bring to mankind. In February 2018, a group of AI experts got together to discuss the possible misuse of AI. What they found was that “Every AI advance by the good guys is an advance for the bad guys, too”. Their main worry was that criminals could use AI for many bad purposes, including using AI to create websites that could steal people’s personal information. Another possible risk was faster hacking(黑客)—AI programs could be taught to find weaknesses in software and break into computer systems. Some other risks were as dramatic as the ones we see in books and movies. For example, long-distant attacks could be made easier through the use of AI. And, finally, there were some worries on imitating voices as well. It is possible that AI could be used to make false photos and videos. In china, tech giant Baidu has developed a program called Deep V oice that can “clone” anyone’s voice by studying a 3. 7-second audio sample (声音样本).Many people in the tech world have expressed worry about AI. People like USbusinessmen Bill Gates and Elon Musk have called for the industry to be more strictly controlled, as there are few laws currently governing the use of AI. Famous British Physicist Stephen Hawking even thought AI could finally cause the end of mankind. “Once humans develop artificial intelligence, it will take off and redesign itself at an alarming rate. Humans…couldn’t compete and would be replaced.”1. What cannot possibly be done by AI right now?A. Driving cars.B. Landing on moon.C. Playing games.D. Ruling all humans.2. Which saying has a similar meaning with the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?A. Every coin has two sides.B. Prevention is better than cure.C. Risk nothing, gain nothing.D. One’s meat is another’s poison.3. How many misuses of AI are mentioned in Paragraph 3?A. One.B. Two.C. Three.D. Four.4. Why does the author mention Stephen Hawking’s words?A. To show Hawking’s perfect prediction.B. To strengthen the high position of Hawking.C. To help readers understand the serious situation.D. To introduce the famous scientist--Stephen Hawking.5. What does the whole passage mainly talk about?A. Risks and dangers of AI.B. Guidance of AI usage.C. Advantages and disadvantages of AI.D. Development of AI industry.Passage 2I am a taxi driver. One Monday morning, I had stopped at New York Hospital when I found a well-dressed man coming over. He was waving to me. I waited until he jumped into the cab. " La Guardia Airport, please, " he said.As always, I wondered about my passenger. "What do you do? " "I am working at the hospital. " For some unknown reason, I decided to ask for his help."Could I ask a favor of you? " He didn't answer. "I have a son, 16. He's doing well in school. He wants a job this summer. Is there any possibility that you might get him a summer job? After a minute, he said, "The medical students have a research project. Maybe he could fit in. Have him send me his school records. " He searched his pocket and handed me a card. That evening, I pulled the card from my pocket. "Robbie, " I said proudly, "This could be a summer job for you. Send him your school records. " He read it out loud, "Fred Plum, New York Hospital. " "Is this a joke? " he said in doubt. After I shouted and threatened (恐吓) to cut off his pocket—money, Robbie promised to send off his grades the next morning. Two weeks later, when I arrived home, my son handed me a letter from Plum. He was to phone Plum's secretary for an interview.Robbie got the job. The white coat he wore made him feel more important than he really was. As high school graduation neared, Plum was kind enough to write letters of recommendation (推荐) for universities, At last, Robbie was admitted to New York Medical College. It never happened to me that a stranger should change my son's future.1. Scientists say this can turn them into aggressive(有攻击性的) dogs.Researchers at the University of Milan in Italy studied 140 dogs aged between 18 months and seven years, according to the Daily Mail newspaper.Half of these dogs had been taken away from their mothers and given new homes when they were between 30 and 40 days old. The other half were taken away when they were 60 days old.Researchers asked the owners where their pets were from and what breed(品种) they were. Then they asked owners to write down whenever their dogs behaved badly. Examples of bad behavior included biting furniture and clothes, baking a lot, and being aggressive to people. Some dogs got angry if other dogs took away their food and toys. Some got scare when they were walking outdoors or if they heard a sudden noise. The scientists found that bad behavior was more common in dogs that had been taken away from their mothers between 30 and 40 days old.Behavior was also worse in dogs that had been removed(带走) early and put in pet shops than those that had been removed later. So if you want to keep a pet dog, think twice before getting one younger than two months old. At that time, computers were large and expensive. Computer networks didn't work well. If one computer in the network broke down, then the whole network stopped. So, a new network system had to be set up. It should be good enough to be used by many different computers. If part of the network was not working, information could be sent through another part. In this way, computer network system would keep on working all the time.At first the Internet was only used by the government, but in the early 1970s, universities, hospitals and banks were allowed to use it, too. However, computers were still very expensive and the Internet was difficult to use. By the start of the 1990s, computers had become cheaper and easier to use. Scientists had also developed software that made "surfing" the Internet more convenient.Today it is easy to get online and it is said that millions of people use the Internet every day. According to a recent report, you don't need the break as much as you may think that makes you feelless tired.Scientists have long assumed that willpower(意志力)is a limited resource, which is why you feel the need to have a rest, have a snack and come back a task when you're feeling better. They argued that the only way to restore willpower was by rest, food or entertainment. But psychologists have challenged this theory, saying weak willpower is all in your head. They found that people's beliefs in willpower determine how long and how well they'll be able to work on a tough mental exercise. "If you think of willpower as something that is not easily used up, you can go on and on. " Said Prof. Veronika Job The researchers designed four experiments to test students' beliefs in willpower. After a tiring task, those, who believed or were led to believe that willpower is a limited resource, performed worse on standard concentration tests than those who thought of willpower as something they had more control over. They also found that leading up to final exam week, students who believed the limited resource theory ate junk food 24 percent more often than those who believed they had more control in resisting temptation(诱惑).Mr. Job said. "The theory that willpower is a limited resource is interesting. A belief in willpower as a non-limited resource makes people stronger in their ability to work through challenges. "The findings could help people who are battling temptation. Willpower isn't driven by a biologically based process as much as we used think. The belief in it is what influences your behavior.1. 高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 122Passage 1Why do people listen to music? The answer may seem simple: Music is pleasant to make and to hear. But music touches our lives in many other ways, too.Music changes our moodMy brother doesn’t choose music based on what he wants to hear. Instead, he decides what he wants to feel and picks music with that mood in mind. Upbeat, bright-sounding music generally makes people feel happy. But some people enjoy listening to sad music, too. It can be like talking with a friend who understands your suffering. But for some people, sad music can make them feel even sadder.Music helps us get things doneDo you ever listen to music while you work? I do, and I find that it sometimes helps me concentrate, According to one expert, music can help you pay attention during boring or repeated tasks. But when you are doing tasks that require more thought, music can disturb you, making them harder. My mom, a preschool teacher, uses music to manage her classroom. When she wants to call a child, instead of yelling the child's name, she sings it. This creates a more positive environment, while still getting the child’s attention.Music brings people togetherMusic can also bring people closer to each other. This is especially true of music played live. Live music often features a group of people playing different instruments which makes it a shared experience. Listeners can share in the emotions the songexpresses. They also create memories together. And speaking of memories, lots of people connect music with specific places, people or events. Whenever they hear a certain song, they are transported back to some point in the past. One of the major things that I cannot imagine living without anymore is mobile payment. There are two major mobile payment apps here, Alipay and Wechat Pay. Both have similar payment features, though Wechat is more like a social media. That’s why I will focus on this “super app”.So far, I’ve been overwhelmed by how convenient life can be with Wechat. It is present in every aspect of people’s daily life, from paying water and electricity bills, meals, cinema tickets to hailing a taxi, following news, and chatting with friends. Most merchants have adopted it, from tiny local street food stalls to high-end stores. A cashier may be surprised if you do not pay with Wechat or Alipay at the grocers or in restaurants. And it seems like the entire payment industry has encouraged this shift to mobile payment, equipping payment terminals (终端) with QR code scanners to simplify payments. Mobile payments are so common here that I realize that I can perfectly survive if I forget my wallet at home one day because most days I just don’t take it out of my bag!As mentioned earlier, Wechat is also a major social media platform with about one billion daily users, which is more than the entire population of the European Union. SoI have to say Chinese technological and digital development is a real miracle.1. What does the underlined word mean in Paragragh 2?A. encouraged.B. shocked.C. confused.D. panicked.2. What can we learn from the passage?A. Wechat is more a social media than Alipay.B. All merchants have adopted mobile payment.C. A cashier may be surprised if you pay with Wechat or Alipay.D. It causes trouble if you don’t take your wallet with you.3. The best title of the passage might be ________.A. The Different Pinions About Mobile PaymentB. The Development of Mobile PaymentC. The Popularity of Chinese Mobile PaymentD. Two Major Apps of Mobile PaymentPassage 3Have you ever noticed what happens to an idea once you express it? Just talking about it or writing it down causes you to make it clear in your own mind. How can you use this to increase your brain power? Start writing.By putting thoughts into words, you are telling yourself the logic behind what you think, feel, or only partly understand. Often, explaining a thought is the process of understanding. In other words, you increase your brain power by exercising your “explain power.”Another benefit of writing is that it helps you remember. Many, if not most, highly productive people are always taking notes. You can try keeping it all in your head, but if you keep a journal of your ideas the next time you’re working on a big project, you’llprobably have more success.Want to understand a topic? Write a book about it. That’s an extreme example, but if you are learning something new, write a letter to a friend about it, and you will understand it better. Want to invent something? Write an explanation of the problem—why you want to solve it, and why it is worth solving, and you’re half-way there.Writers don’t always write because they clearly understand something beforehand. Often, they write about something because they want to understand it. You can do the same. Writing will help bring you to an understanding. Give it a try.1. What would be the best title for the passage?A. Way on How to WriteB. Increase Your Brain Power Through WritingC. Brain Power Helps Improve Your WritingD. How to Start your Writing2. According to the passage, writing can help you a lot EXCEPT ________ .A. to increase your brain powerB. to improve the ability to rememberC. to develop your interest in studyD. to strengthen the understanding of a topic3. The underlined sentence “you’re half-way there” in the fourth paragraph means that ________ .A. you are already successfulB. there’s a long way for you to go to reach your goalC. you are left wondering what to doD. you have been on the way to successPassage 4Staying with family members or receiving professional care? Seniors in Harbin have a new choice to enrich their life in retirement(退休), as harbin. dbw. cn reported. The seniors can take a bus to a day-care nursing home every day between 8 am and 5 pm, just like others go to work, and go back home to be with their families in the evening. In the nursing home, they will receive professional care, have lunch, take part in activities such as calligraphy(书法)and singing, and take university courses designed for them.According to a research, there were 1. 75 million seniors by the end of 2015. Less than 10 percent choose to stay in the nursing home while most live at home. Loneliness and shortage of care are the major problems facing the stay-at-home seniors.“After my mother passed away, I struggled to take good care of my father,” said Zhou, an office worker. Those who have retired parents agree that their parents spenda boring and lonely day at home, watching TV all day and filling their stomach with food. The situation becomes worse in winter when elders are unable to go out due to the coldHowever, the cost of such nursing homes is different from person to person but stands at around 2, 000 yuan(290). Air travel makes some people very nervous. The crowds, the noise and flying itself can cause unease. But there are classes people can take to help them defeat their fear of flying. And, let me introduce similar training for service dogs that suffer the same problem.Service dogs almost never leave the side of the people they care for. You will see them working on buses, trains and other public transport systems. But the busy environment found at an airport can trouble even the best trained working dog.People with disabilities depend on their dogs. They want the animals to safely guide them through security areas. They also need the dogs to remain calm on duty on the plane, even when the flying is not smooth. This takes special training. The Air Hollywood K9 Flight School is one place where such help can be found. The school has a piece of equipment that provides the sights, sounds and even the feel of an airplane in flight. It is called a flight simulator, which was built for filming airplane scenes in movies.Sandy Alexander has a disability that requires his two-year-old dog, Doc, to be always at his side. Mr. Alexander took the dog to the flight school to get him ready for plane trips. He says Doc did not like the bumpy part of the flight simulation.Dog trainer Mary Segall is with Canine Companions for Independence. It provides dogs for people with disabilities. Ms. Segall says successful training is based on a simple rule: preparation."Dogs need to be exposed gradually and repetitively to stimulation, to theenvironment, to loud noises, to sounds and to other dogs so that when this experience happens to them on a daily basis, they are able to act in a way that they're used to acting and that they don't get excitable. "He's really sick and mum says he needs an operation. But my daddy can't pay for it, so I have brought all my money. ""How much do you have? " asked the man. "1. 11, but I can try and get some more," she answered."Well, what luck, " smiled the man. "1. 11, the price of a miracle for little brothers. "He took up the girl's hand and said, "Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's see if I have the kind of miracle you need. "That well-dressed man was Dr Carlton Armstrong, a famous doctor. The operation was successful and it wasn't long before Andrew was home again. How much did the miracle cost?1. In the eye of the girl, a miracle might be ________ .A. something interestingB. something beautifulC. some wonderful medicineD. some good food2. 2. What made the miracle happen? ________A. The girl's love for her brother.B. The girl's moneyC. The medicine from the drugstore.D. Nobody can tell.3. From the passage we can infer (推断) that ________ .A. The doctor didn't ask for any payB. A miracle is sure to happen if you keep onC. The little girl is lovely but not so cleverD. Andrew was in fact not so sick as they had thought.Passage 2During the rosy years of elementary school (小学), I enjoyed sharing my dolls and jokes, which allowed me to keep my high social status. I was the queen of the playground. Then came my tweens and teens, and mean girls and cool kids. They rose in the ranks not by being friendly but by smoking cigarettes, breaking rules and playing jokes on others, among whom I soon found myself.Popularity is a well-explored subject in social psychology. Mitch Prinstein, a professor of clinical psychology sorts the popular into two categories: the likable and the status seekers. The likables' plays-well-with-others qualities strengthen schoolyard friendships, jump-start interpersonal skills and, when tapped early, are employed ever after in life and work. Then there's the kind of popularity that appears in adolescence: status born of power and even dishonorable behavior.Enviable as the cool kids may have seemed, Dr. Prinstein's studies show unpleasant consequences. Those who were highest in status in high school, as well as those least liked in elementary school, are "most likely to engage (从事) in dangerous and risky behavior. "In one study, Dr. Prinstein examined the two types of popularity in 235 adolescents, scoring the least liked, the most liked and the highest in status based on student surveys (调查研究). "We found that the least well-liked teens had become more aggressive over time toward their classmates. But so had those who were high in status. It clearly showed that while likability can lead to healthy adjustment, high status has just the opposite effect on us. "Dr. Prinstein has also found that the qualities that made the neighbors want you on a play date—sharing, kindness, openness—carry over to later years and make you better able to relate and connect with others. In analyzing his and other research, Dr. Prinstein came to another conclusion: Not only is likability related to positive life outcomes, but it is also responsible for those outcomes, too. "Being liked creates opportunities for learning and for new kinds of life experiences that help somebody gain an advantage, " he said.1. What is the second paragraph mainly about? ________A. The classification of the popular.B. The characteristics of adolescents.C. The importance of interpersonal skills.D. The causes of dishonorable behavior.2. What did Dr. Prinstein's study find about the most liked kids? ________A. They appeared to be aggressive.B. They tended to be more adaptableC. They enjoyed the highest status.D. They performed well academically.3. What is the best title for the text? ________A. Be Nice—You Won't Finish LastB. The Higher the Status, the BetterC. Be the Best—You Can Make ItD. More Self-Control, Less AggressivenessPassage 3An idea that started in Seattle's public library has spread throughout America and beyond. The concept is simple: help to build a sense of community in a city by getting everyone to read the same book at the same time.In addition to encouraging reading as a pursuit (追求) to be enjoyed by all, the program allows strangers to communicate by discussing the book on the bus, as well as promoting reading as an experience to be shared in families and schools. The idea came from Seattle librarian Nancy Pearl who launched (发起) the "If All of Seattle Read the Same Book" project in 1998. Her original program used author visits, study guides and book discussion groups to bring people together with a book, but the idea has since expanded to many other American cities, and even to Hong Kong.In Chicago, the mayor (市长) appeared on television to announce the choice of To Kill a Mockingbird as the first book in the "One Book, One Chicago" program. As a result, reading clubs and neighbourhood groups sprang up around the city. Across the US, stories emerged of parents and children reading to each other at night and strangers chatting away on the bus about plot and character. The only problem arose in New York, where local readers could not decide on one book to represent the huge and diverse population. This may show that the idea works best in medium-sized cities or large towns, where a greater sense of unity(一致) can be achieved. Or it may show that New Yorkers rather missed the point, putting all their energy and passion into the choice of the book rather than discussion about a book itself.Ultimately as Nancy points out, the level of success is not measured by how manypeople read a book, but by how many people are enriched by the process or have enjoyed speaking to someone with whom they would not otherwise have shared a word.1. What is the purpose of the project launched by Nancy? ________A. To invite authors to guide readers.B. To encourage people to read and share.C. To involve people in community service.D. To promote the friendship between cities.2. Why was it difficult for New Yorkers to carry out the project? ________A. They had little interest in reading.B. They were too busy to read a book.C. They came from many different backgrounds.D. They lacked support from the local government.3. According to the passage, where would the project be more easily carried out? ________A. In large communities with little sense of unity.B. In large cities where libraries are far from home.C. In medium-sized cities with a diverse population.D. In large towns where agreement can be quickly reached.4. According to Nancy, the degree of success of the project is judged by ________ .A. the careful selection of a proper bookB. the growing popularity of the writersC. the number of people who benefit from readingD. the number of books that each person readsPassage 4Researchers say they have developed technology that could predict heart attacks years before they happen. They report using mathematical systems to examine CT images of a patient's heart. A CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to make detailed pictures of bones, organs and other tissue inside the body. The new method was developed by researchers at the University of Oxford in England. A report on their study was published in the medical journal The Lancet. Also taking part in the study were teams from Germany and the U. S.Most heart attacks result from a build-up of fatty tissue inside arteries(动脉) that carry blood from the heart to other areas of the body, thus blocking this flow of blood and causing a heart attack.Currently, doctors use CT scans to learn when a sticky substance called plaque has already built up inside an artery. The new technology is designed to predict which arteries are at risk for future buildup. The researchers reported using computers to examine CT scans to measure how much fat is present around heart arteries. That fat changes when an artery becomes affected, serving as an early warning system for heart attacks.Charalambos, a professor at the University of Oxford, said he believes the research shows this method could be very effective in getting patients to take early steps to prevent future problems, adding that researchers had yet to estimate exactly how manyheart attacks could be prevented. But he said he believes the technique could help identify between 20 to 30 percent of people at risk of having one.He added that the new technology will make such predictions easier because it works together with existing CT technology. The research was based on two large, independent studies of 4, 000 patients in Germany, and the U. S. A company with ties to the University of Oxford is developing a service to examine CT scans of patients around the world, Reuters reported.1. What's the aim of the new technology? ________A. To predict ways to block fatty issues in heart arteries.B. To provide detailed pictures of how arteries work.C. To build computer models of the image of a heart.D. To decide which arteries are likely to have fat built up.2. What's an early warning for heart attacks? ________A. A change of fat happening around heart arteries.B. The finding of a sticky material in the blood.C. The presence of fat around the bones and organs.D. The aging and failure of arteries near the heart.3. What's the main idea of the text? ________A. The harm of fat build-up to heart arteries.B. The use of CT scans to prevent heart attacks.C. Research into the early warning of heart attacks.D. The warming the body gives about heart attacks.Passage 5Two years ago my grandmother was going to turn 75. My family discussed what the best way to celebrate was. Should we throw her a party? Should we take her on a trip? We remembered that she had touched so many people's lives, and there were so many people for her to consider. Then someone got the idea that we should include everyone in the celebration by turning it into a tribute(献礼) to my grandmother. We secretly sent out letters to the people in Grandmother's address book and asked them to send a letter with a memory that they had shared with her. People sent us letters with poems, stories and pictures. The deep feeling that was shared through the response surprised us. We compiled(编辑) these letters into a memory book and amazed her with it on the morning of her birthday. The unusual thing about my grandmother's friends was not the number that she had, but the connection they shared. In many ways this book of friendship was the greatest achievement of my grandmother's life.I believe that developing true friendships is one of the most important things that anyone can do in one's lifetime. It is not a matter of the number of friends one has, but the quality of the bonds. If one has had at least one true friendship before dying, then one can say one has lived a successful life. I have made many friends and I believe I have begun to develop the same types of friendships my grandmother kept up over her lifetime. I only hope that I will be as successful as she has been.1. How did the author's family celebrate Grandmother's birthday? ________A. They took her on a trip across the country.B. They gave her a memory book of friendship.C. They invited all her friends to her birthday party.D. They asked all her friends to send her cards.2. When receiving her birthday gift, the author's grandmother probably felt ________ .A. disappointed and lonelyB. sorry and sadC. surprised and pleasedD. nervous and excited3. The underlined word "bonds" in the last paragraph probably means ________ .A. relationshipsB. worksC. SuccessesD. celebrations4. According to the passage, the author probably agrees that ________ .A. the more friends you have, the betterB. friends are more important than familyC. understanding leads to greater successD. true friendship is very important to us参考答案Passage 11. 高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 224

高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 224Passage 1On a farm in England, Gavin and Alice Munro are taking sustainability to the next level: they harvest trees which they grow into chairs. The couple have a furniture(家具) farm in Derbyshire where they are growing 250 chairs, 100 lamps and 50 tables. It is their answer to what they see as the inefficient(无效率) process of cutting down mature trees to create furniture.“Instead of force-growing a tree for 50 years and then cutting it down and making it into smaller and smaller bits. .. the idea is to grow the tree into the shape that you want directly. It’s like a kind of 3D printing,” said Gavin.Part of the inspiration for the idea came when Gavin was a young boy. He spotted an overgrown bonsai tree (盆栽) which looked like a chair. The 44-year-old began experimenting in 2003. In 2012, Gavin and Alice set up the company Full Grown. Within several years, the couple developed the most effective way to shape a tree without limiting its growth. They guide shoots (嫩枝) already heading in the right direction, rather than force them the wrong way against their natural growth. The average chair takes six to nine years to grow - and another year to dry out. The labor and time involved in producing the organic pieces means they do not come cheap. Chairs sell for£10,000 each, lamps for £900 to £2,300 and tables for £2,500 to £12,500.1. They never seemed to show much love for each other. Annie believed that people who were in love would show it. They would hold hands, speak sweet words to each other and give each other nice gifts. Annie's parents did none of these things. So, she doubted whether theyreally loved each other.Annie's dad was always in a good mood when he was near his sports car, so she decided to ask him the question that had been bothering her. "Dad, do you and Mom really love each other? ""Of course, " her father replied. "Why do you ask? ""Well, you never seem to show it. "Annie's father was silent for a while, he spoke again. "Look at the engine of this car. " he said. "It is oily and messy, and the car looks much better when the hood(引擎罩)is down. Don't you agree? " Without waiting for a reply, he went on. "If I took out the engine and put the hood back down, the car would look just as beautiful, right? But it wouldn't be a car anymore. The engine is its beating heart. You don't usually see it, but it has to be there. It's the same with your Mom and me. Our love for each other is the beating heart of this family. Don't worry just because it isn't on show all the time. "About six months later, Annie's father lost his job. The family had to cut back on many things to make ends meet. And he had to sell his beloved sports car. But Annie noticed another change. Because he had more free time, her father spent more of it with her mother. They seemed to grow closer together, and showed their love more often. Their love, which Annie had been afraid did not exist, was plain to see. Wenjie is an astrophysicist, while Miao is a nanotech engineer, and he's been attracted to a virtual-reality, online video game called Three Body.Either of these plots alone would make for a rich SF (Science Fiction) novel, but Cixin Liu is only getting warmed up. By the time the book hits its peak, it's uncovereda conspiracy (阴谋) that crosses over solar systems—one that not only threatens to alter the human race, but the very building blocks of physics that we've evolved to understand. This hard SF is full of lovingly lengthy passages of technical explanation about everything from quantum (量子) mechanics to artificial intelligence. But Cixin Liu supports all of that brain twisting theory with vivid characters and a strong action-thriller plot. For all its universal appeal, The Three-body Problem is set against a specific background. one that most English-language readers only know from a distance. Many of its major points depend on the knowledge of Chinese history and culture-and while Ken Liu's translation is clear, tasteful, and lyrical, there's a lot of explanation to think through. It's worth every ounce of effort. The book's well-earned suspense (悬念) depends on moral conflicts that resonate (共鸣) far beyond its nationality or even its hard, abstract physics. At what point does science become belief, and what point does that same belief become religion? Cixin Liu doesn't pose that question so much. If The Three-body Problem (and the next two books in the series, whose translations are in the works) helps bridge the gap between Eastern and Western SF, it will have performed a great duty for the literary world.1. What is the purpose of first paragraph? ________A. To casually mention the book's content.B. To mention the highlights of the novel.C. To warn the readers of the thrilling plot.D. To imply Cixin Liu's attitude to the book.2. What can we infer about Liu Ken's translation of the book The Three-body Problem? ________A. The translation contains points worthy of further consideration.B. The translation does not include all the details in the original.C. Liu Ken has not put down his full effort into the translation.D. The translation has been suspended thus unpublished.3. With which of the following statements would the author of the passage most probably agree? ________A. Liu makes up many of the scientific terms in the book himself.B. The western world does not care much about the Three-body Problem.C. The book is a great medium for eastern-western literary communication.D. The Three-body Problems contains nothing more than some scientific theories.4. What is the best title for the text? ________A. How to Read Hard Science Fictions.B. The Three-body Problem: A Literary Bridge.C. The Gap Between Eastern and Western Literature.D. Liu Cixin: the World Best Science Fiction Novelist.Passage 4Let's say you're taking a Spanish test when an answer just won't come to you, eventhough you saw it on last night's practice quiz (10 sleepless hours ago). Or maybe you miss every free throw during your basketball game—and to top if off, you are not friendly to your teammate on the way to the locker room. These may seem like unrelated events, but here's the surprising truth: Each may be a direct consequence of your lack of sleep time. In one study, just an hour less of sleep each night made six-graders perform like fourth-graders on mental tests. Other research shows that sleep loss makes you run slower and miss more shots in sports, while doubling your possibility of injury. Some experts even argue that teens would be less likely to take risks or suffer from anxiety and depression (沮丧) if they could just get enough sleep. "When you lack sleep and you run into a stressful situation, whether it's with your friends or something else, you're going to get angry and upset, " explains Dr. Kathleen Berchelmann, a doctor in St. Louis, Missouri. "I see a lot of depression and anxiety in teens who aren't getting enough sleep. "It's surprising to think that by spending more time in bed, you could lift your grade point average, get along with your loved ones, perform better on the field, and feel happier. But scientists say it's true—many teens are walking around like zombies (僵尸) without even realizing it.1. The first paragraph serves as a(n) ________ .A. explanationB. introductionC. commentD. background2. What does the underlined word "consequence" in paragraph 2 mean? ________A. EvidenceB. ProblemC. ResultD. Experience3. According to the text, if a teenager lacks sleep, he may ________ .A. have poor performance in sportsB. be absent from class the next dayC. lose interest in everythingD. feel lonely and disappointed4. What is the text mainly about? ________A. Children's sleeping habits.B. Teenagers' sleep-related diseases.C. Learning problems and lack of sleep.D. Bad results of teens' sleep loss.Passage 5A sleepover (过夜) program, which is designed to make kids believe that their favorite toys enjoy reading, can help encourage children to pick up more books, a new study suggests.Toys sleepover programs are designed to get children interested in books. Children take their toys to a library for the night. At this point, workers and volunteers take photos of the toys which explore the library and read books. The next day, the children collect their toys and the photos of what the toys did during the night. They are given the books their toys chose to read.It was found that before the sleepover the children did not spend time looking at the books in their play area at preschool. Immediately after the sleepover, the number of children who read to the toys was higher than the number who did not, but after three days the effect decreased gradually. The researchers also tested a method for sustaining the effect. They reminded the children of the sleepover a month later, by hiding the toys and showing them the photos again the next day. This simple method brought an increase in the number of children reading to their toys. The study proves for the first time that children who take part in sleepover programs read picture books to their toys more. "We wanted to know if there really was an effect, and if so, how long it lasts. Surprisingly, not only did the children show interest in the books, but they also began to read to their toys. This means that a new behavior pattern appeared that the children hadn't had before. We did not expect anything like this, " said one of the researchers.Reading is important for the development of children's language skills and imagination. When parents read to their children, it is a passive way of reading for the child. However, when children read to their toys, it is a more active, self-directed way of reading, helping them develop into more active readers, researchers said.1. What is the purpose of the sleepover program? ________A. To develop children's language skills.B. To help children to sleep well.C. To encourage children to read more.D. To guide children to form a good sleeping habit.2. What do children do in the sleepover program? ________A. Go around the library with their toys.B. Sleep with their toys.C. Read together with their toys.D. Take their toys to the library.3. The underlined word "sustaining" in paragraph 4 can be replaced by ________ .A. keepingB. testingC. surveyingD. showing4. What made the researchers surprised after the study of the sleepover program? ________A. Children showed no interest in the books.B. The effect of the sleepover program could last long.C. Children began to read to their toys on their own.D. Whether the sleepover program had an effect remained unknown.参考答案Passage 11. D细节理解题。

贵州省遵义市凤冈县第一中学2019-2020学年高一英语6月强化训练试题(无答案)第一部分阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2分, 满分30分)AOn December 24, 1971, 17-year-old Juliane Köepcke got on a plane with her mother in Lima, Peru, to fly to another city to meet her father.Over the Amazon jungle (丛林), the rain fell heavily and there was a strong wind. And then lightning hit the plane at 3,000 metres, and it crashed (坠毁). Juliane fell quickly through the air in her seat and hit the trees hard. For three hours, she was senseless. When she woke up, her right arm was cut, her shoulder hurt badly and she couldn’t see out of one eye. She was alone. But she was alive!Juliane’s father was a biologist (生物学家) and when she was small, he taught her how to survive in the jungle. She found a small river and walked slowly along it. “If I follow the river,” she thought, “I’ll find people.” The river also gave her clean water to drink. It was very hot, but the river water kept her cool. Sometimes she had to swim in the river because it was too deep to walk in. There was fruit on some trees but she didn’t eat it — she knew it was too dangerous. Juliane walked for ten days. Ten days after the crash, she found a small house by the river. There were some woodcutters in the house. They buy large numbers of newspapers, magazines and books —especially paperbacks (平装书), which are still cheap in spite of everincreasing rises in the costs of printing. They still continue to buy “proper” books, too, printed on good paper. There are many streets in London containing shops which specialize in bookselling. Perhaps the best known of these is Charing Cross Road in the very heart of London. Here bookshops of all sorts and sizes are to be found, from the celebrated one which is said to be “the biggest bookshop in the world” to the tiny, dusty little places which seem to have been left over from Dickens’ time. Some of these shops stock, or will make efforts to get, any kind of book, but many of them specialize in secondhand books, in art books, in foreign books, in books on economics, politics or any other subjects about which books may be written. One shop in this area specializes only in books about ballet.Although it may be the most convenient place for Londoners to buy books, Charing Cross Road is not the cheapest. For really cheap secondhand books, collectors must venture off the beaten track, to Farringdon Road, in the East Central District of London. Here there is nothing so impressive as bookshops. The booksellers come along each morning and put lots of books onto small handcarts(手推车) which line the streets. The collectors, some professionals and some amateurs (业余爱好者), who have been waiting for them, run quickly towards the books. In places like this one can still, occasionally, pick up for a few pence an old book that may be worth many pounds.8.“Londoners are great readers” means that ________.A. Bookshops in LondonB. The biggest bookshop in the worldC. Charing Cross RoadD. Buying books in LondonDMeghan Howey, an archaeologist(考古学家) at the University of New Hampshire says, “ Humans have lived near the coast for thousands of years. In that time, they created and left behind many cultural relics that hold pieces of the past. These are famous places such as Rapa Nui in the southeastern Pacific Ocean and the canal city of Venice in Italy. But they also include many smaller and less known places. If rising seas destroy these places, we’re going to lose those people’s stories too.”David Anderson, an archaeologist at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and other researchers recently used online information to look at the dangers created by rising seas. They found that a one-meter rise in sea level could destroy more than 13, 000 of the cultural relics in the southeastern United States. He says, “ Climate change is under way, so now it is the time to start thinking how we are going to protect the important places. We need to know what’s out there and what’s caused or else it may become too late to save at least some of these places.Efforts to control the worst influences from climate change, including the sea level rise, will require cutting greenhouse-gas emissions(排放物)or taking steps to control flooding in important areas. Another method might be to move cultural treasures. But it’s unlikely that the capital to do that will be saved or collected to pay for every site. And some treasures simply can’t be moved. If researchers used only traditional methods to map those places, most would be gone before you got to them. Satellites with cameras and other tools, however, can more quickly and easily find and map many of these places.“ Scanning(扫描)and imaging tools can help ," says Mark D. McCoy, an archaeologist at Southern Methodist University. “ High-resolution digital photography can make detailed images. Computer technologies also can create 3-D virtual(虚拟的)reality models.”12. What will happen to the cultural relics according to Meghan Howey?A. They will be harmed by rising seas.B. They will lose people's attention.C. They will become more crowded.D. Their old stories will not survive.13. What does David Anderson encourage people to do?A. Take immediate action to save the cultural relics.B. Collect information about the cultural relics.C. Find out the real cause of climate change.D. Move the cultural relics to safe places.14. What can replace the underlined word “capital” in the third paragraph?A. Time.B. Advice.C. Fund.D. Effort.15. What can be helpful to deal with the problem?A. Machine tools.B. Advanced technology.C. Scientific research.D. Traditional methods.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

高一英语阅读理解强化训练附解析Day 228Passage 1Over the last two decades (十年), the Earth has seen an increase in vegetation (植被) and China and India are leading the increase in greening on land. The result comes mostly from tree planting programs in China and intensive agriculture(集约农业) in both countries.Researchers from Boston University found that global green area has increased by 5% since the early 2000s, an area equal to the size of Amazon rainforest. Among the increased area, China and India contribute to about 33%, especially China, with 25% itself. China’s great contribution came mostly from its programs to protect and expand forests, which is about 42%. These programs were developed in an effort to reduce the effect of desertification, air pollution and climate change.Another 32% of the greening change in China, and 82% in India, resulted from intensive agriculture of food crops. The land area used to grow crops in China and India has not changed much since the early 2000s. Yet both countries have greatly increased the total green area and food production in order to feed large populations. The lead author Chi Chen of Boston University said,“That is a surprising finding, since it is generally believed that land degradation(退化) in populous countries is usually more serious.”Rama Nemani, a research scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center, saw a positive message in the new findings. “Once people realize there is a problem, they tend to fix it,” However, the researchers rang bells as well. Throughout the day, rumors (传言) warned that the newest employee from each department would be laid off. I was the newest one in the training department."Administration wants us to offer outplacement classes to help those employees find other jobs, showing them how to act in an interview, for example. " "Fine, " I answered unwillingly, not knowing what else to say.I decided to go home early that day. In the hall. I met the lady who brought us cookies every Friday. She was a little woman with gray hair. Only her head and the top of her green apron were visible over the cart (小车) loaded with cleaning supplies, At least she had a job!At the final meeting, laid-off workers formed a line at the door. A colleague whispered, "I can't believe our Cookie Lady is being laid off. We'll miss her as much as we'll miss her cookies When the colleague spoke to her in Spanish, I knew my classes would be useless for her and I realized how much better off I was than this poor woman.I decided to do something for her. I wrote to a newspaper expressing how I felt about the unselfishness of the Cookie Lady who needed a job. A few days later, my article appeared in the newspaper and the Cookie Lady was allowed to stay in her position. On the same day, I received a letter, which seemed so unlikely that I read it twice. They are a branch of the great Appalachian family, and can be seen to the west rising up to a noble height and towering over the surrounding country, when the weather is fair and settled, they are clothed in blue and purple, and print their beautiful shapes on the clear evening sky, but sometimes when it is cloudless, gray steam gathers around the top of the mountains which, in the last rays of the setting sun, will shine and light up like a crown of glory. At the foot of these mountains, a traveler may see light smoke going up from a village. In that village, and in one of the houses (which, to tell the exact truth, was sadly time-worn and weather-beaten), there lived many years ago, a simple, good-natured fellow by the name of Rip Van Winkle.Rip's great weakness was a natural dislike of all kinds of money-making labor. It could not be from lack of diligence (勤劳), for he could sit all day on a wet rock and fish without saying a word, even though he was not encouraged by a single bite. He would carry a gun on his shoulder for hours, walking through woods and fields to shoot a few birds or squirrels. He would never refuse to help a neighbor, even in the roughest work. The women of the village, too, used to employ him to do such little jobs as their less helpful husbands would not do for them. In a word, Rip was ready to attend to everybody's business but his own.If left to himself, he would have whistled (吹口哨) life away in perfect satisfaction; but his wife was always mad at him for his idleness (懒散). Morning, noon, and night, her tongue was endlessly going, so that he was forced to escape to the outside of the house—the only side which, in truth, belongs to a henpecked husband.1. However, he was even more surprised to find another coin.He then knelt down, looked up to heaven and said thanks aloud, in which he spoke of his wife, sick and helpless, and his children without bread. The student was deeply moved, and his eyes were filled with tears. "Now, " saidthe teacher, "you can't be much more pleased than if you had played your trick. "The boy replied, "You have taught me a lesson which I'll never forget. Now I always want to keep it in my hand, being afraid that I might miss important calls or messages,” Miss Liu tells her doctor.Miss Gu, a news worker, has to take her mobile phone with her all the time so as not to miss any calls from her office or readers. Gradually, she started to experience a great “panic” about her mobile phone. “Every night when I’m about to fall asleep, I often wake up with a start, feeling that my phone is ringing. Although I’m sure that I have turned it off, I still feel that it is ringing, clearly.”The above phenomenon is what we call “mobile-phone acouasm (幻听)”. The mobile phone has now become a “new organ” in a white collar’s daily life, and “mobile-phone acouasm” has become a common phenomenon among office workers.According to a report of China Youth Daily,“mobile-phone acouasm ” most likely results from people’s dependency on hi-tech products. It is associated with certain professions, such as salesmen, consultants and journalists. They use mobile phones almost continuously.Constantly being in the “stand-by” mode, the strong psychological tension gives them acouasm. Meanwhile, a large number of this year’s graduates are joining the family of acouasm suffers due to the hard job-hunting experience.“You know that the rings are not from your phone, but you always take it out and have a look. This is subconscious(潜意识) from your body sending you a signal, telling you that you must take a break to reduce your pressure,” Professor Sun Li from Huadong Normal University explains. There are many ways to solve the problem. The professor says that the key is to deal with pressure from work. “This is just a kind of self-protection”; the most important thing is to find out the source of your pressure. And then take part in some activities that are not related to your work. You can do anything that can relax your body and mind.”43.
