1.Discuss the social and historical elements that promoted the birth of the modern novel in England.Key:There are several factors that promote the rise and the first flowering of the English novel.First,as we’ve said in the previous section,in the18th century science and technology developed fast, and printing grew as one of the most prosperous trades. Therefore, books were quickly printed and in comparatively larger numbers.Second, with the growth of capitalist economy, the middle class grew strong to become the dominant element in all the aspects of social, political and economic life of England. And with it an urban economy also came into being. Big cities like London increased in number in the country and farmers or the agricultural population swarmed into the city to gradually settle down as traders, servants, workers and apprentices. These new settlers in the cities formed a reading public that badly needed to improve themselves and they provided the necessity and possibility of the flourish of a book market.Third, with the development of industry, women were deprived of their previous opportunities of spinning and weaving at home.Without a way to earn a living, women who failed to marry into a family with secure financial means to support them were forced to work as maids,or became thieves, prostitutes orkept women in the cities. These women,no matter as an idle wife of a rich man,or as a servant girl, joined the public readers and some of them even became writers themselves who sold popular literary works to earn a living. Thus,by mid-18th century,a large book market had been established in England that sold reading stuff of all kinds, from journals and newspapers, political pamphlets, conduct books, travel guides, manuals for house decoration, ghost stories, romances, etc. to serious literature of poetry, drama and prose work written by classical masters like Swift and Johnson.2.Discuss Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe as a typical middle-class novel.Key:Readers of China are mostly familiar with this novel. In the past we emphasised Crusoe’s imperialist and capitalist side, because Marx says in his On the Capital that Crusoe is the typical representative of the rising capitalist class whose sole interest is to expand and exploit, and in Crusoe’s adventures we see how capital is accumulated at the early stage of capitalism. While what Marx says is correct,he only sees the story from a political and economic point of view.As a literary figure,Crusoe is more than just a money-grabbing capitalist and colonialist. He also shows many positive sides of the rising middle class, such as the love for labor, the industrious and thrifty life style, courage to explore strange lands,a curiosity to know the world, and the strong desire to test one’s own strength and establish one’s individual identity.3.What kind of novel did Richardson write? And discuss his two major novels toshow your points.Key:All Richardson’s novels and writings preach the Puritan ideology of hard work, honesty, thrift, industry, and, most of all,the importance of living a virtuous life. For example, his Pamela,or Virtue Rewarded and Clarissa,or The History of a Young Lady.In Pamela,or Virtue Rewarded,Pamela grew up into a beautiful and virtuous young woman with good taste and refined manners, getting through many hardships and threats, and finally she is married to his young master Mr.B, which indicates that her virtue is rewarded. In Clarissa,or The History of a Young Lady, unlike Pamela in birth,Clarissa Harlowe was the daughter of a rich merchant. She was both beautiful and virtuous and had her own share of wealth given to her by her grandfather. But such a young lady could not choose to marry a man she liked and respected, for her father and brother forced her to marry a rich but disgusting and vulgar merchant,in order to merge the property and wealth of the two families. To escape the hatedmarriage,Clarissa, inexperienced and innocent, fell into the hands of a rake Mr.Lovelace and was deceived and kidnapped to a brothel, and later drugged and raped.Although afterwards Lovelace realised his true feelings for Clarissa and proposed marriage, the virtuous girl could neither forgive him nor herself for harboring illusions toward a rake. Finally, she sought a slow suicidal death and wrote her own story as a warning to all the young women.4.How did Fielding name his panoramic novels? What are the main features of his novels?Key:Fielding named his panoramic novels“comic epic in prose”.Epics are usually written in verse, and the subjects are always adventures and heroic deeds of the heroes of noble birth. But here Fielding tells us that he has written a prose work with the epic scope and power, but the main protagonists are common people and even people of the low social status. This is a real revolution in the Western literary history in which literary genres abide by a rather strict rule of levels of style.Although Parson Adams and Joseph are still comic roles, they are no longer minor characters, but the centre of the story. In this experiment of Fielding’s,the new novel has paved way to the more realistic representation of common people’s experiences in the19th century.5.Why do we say that Tristram Shandy is a strange and difficult novel? In what way does this novel anticipate the postmodern novel tendencies?Key:We have several reasons to call Tristram Shandy experimental and difficult. First,it is perhaps the first English novel that does not respect the plot’s time sequence.Second, the book is made difficult by Sterne with a lot of typographical oddities. And third,he has employed a lot of sexual jokes such as his own unfortunate accidents during his mother’s conception of him and later the doctor’s crushing of his nose.Sterne is the first novelist who anticipates the postmodern violation of the temporal sequence of a narrative.。

The Neoclassical Period (18th century)Definitions of literary terms英语081班汪志超51011080951) The Enlightenment MovementThe 18th-century England is known as the Age of Enlightenment or the Age of Reason. The Enlightenment Movement was a progressive intellectual movement which flourished in France & swept through the whole Western Europe at the time. The movement was a furtherance of the Renaissance of the 15th & 16th centuries. Its purpose was to enlighten the whole world with the light of modem philosophical & artistic ideas. The enlighteners celebrated reason or rationality, equality & science. They called for a reference to order, reason & rules & advocated universal education. Famous among the great enlighteners in England were those great writers like John Dryden, Alexander pope & so on.2) NeoclassicismIn England, neoclassicism is initiated by John Dryden, culminated in Alexander Pope and continued by Samuel Johnson. It was a reaction against the fire of passions that blazed in the later Renaissance. It found its literary artistic model in the classical literature of ancient Greek and Latin authors, such as Homer, Virgil, Horace. The neoclassicists have their artistic ideas: order, logic, symmetry, restraint, accuracy, good taste, good sense, decorum and so on. In drama, they follow the Three Unities closely.1Richard Steele(1672-1729) and Joseph Addison(1672-1719)The Tatler ; The Spectator (the earliest periodicals)2Samuel Johnson(1709-1784)Samuel Johnson, commonly called Dr. Johnson, was one of the greatest figures of 18th-century English literature. He was the last great neoclassicist enlightener in the late 18th century. He had a hand in all the different branches of literary activities. He was a poet, dramatist, prose romancer, biographer, essayist, critic, lexicographer & publicist. His major works :poems: "London", & "The vanity of Human Wishes"a romance: The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abyssinia ;a tragedy: Irenehundreds of essays in the two periodicals :The Rambler & The Idler;English dictionary :A Dictionary of the English Language传记文学双星:Life of Johnson by James Boswell,The Life of Charlotte Bronte by Elizabeth Cleghon Gaskell3Alexander pope(1688-1744)poetPope is one of the fore-most satirists in world literature as well as a great poet. Pope's mock-heroic poem The Rape of the Lock is one of the finest examples of English comic verse. As a representative of the Enlightenment, Pope was one of the first to introduce rationalism to England. He was the greatest poet of his time. His major works1). The Rape of the LockA delightful burlesque of epic poetry, it ridicules the manners of the English nobility. The poem isbased on an actual incident in which a young nobleman stole a lock of a lady's hair.2) An Essay on CriticismHis first important work, An Essay on Criticism was a long didactic poem in heroic couplets. In this work, he reflected the neo-classical spirit of the times by advocating good taste, common sense & the adherence to classical rules in writing & criticism. The whole poem is written in a plain style, hardly containing any imagery or eloquence &therefore makes easy reading.3)The DunciadGenerally considered Pope's best satiric work, The Dunciad goes deep in meaning & works at many levels. Its satire is directed at Dullness in general, & in the course of it all the literary men of the age. Poets mainly who had made Pope's enemies, are held up to ridicule. But the poem is not confined to personal attack. Dullness as reflected in the corruptness of government, social morals, education & even religion, is expertly exposed & satirized. The Realistic Novel:The mid-century was, however, predominated by a newly rising literary form, the modern English novel, which, contrary to the traditional romance of aristocrats, gives a realistic presentation of life of the common English people. This-the most significant phenomenon in the history of the development of English literature in the eighteenth century - is a natural product of the Industrial Revolution & a symbol of the growing importance & strength of the English of the growing importance & strength of the English middle class, Among the pioneers were Daniel Defoe ,Samuel Richardson, Henry Fielding, Laurence Sterne, Tobias George Smollett, & Oliver Goldsmith.1Daniel Defoe(1660-1731)He acquired a pure naked English—smooth, easy, almost colloquial. Yet never coarse. He loved short, crisp, plain sentences. There is nothing artificial in his language; it is really common English.作品:1)Pamphlet: The Trueborn Englishman—A Satire.(It contained a caustic exposure of the aristocracy and the tyranny of the church.)2)Novels:Robinson Crusoe(The character of Robinson Crusoe is representative of the English bourgeoisie atthe earlier stage of its development.); Captain Singleton; Moll Flanders; Colonel Jacque2Jonathan Swift (1667-1745)He is an Irish. Swift is one of the greatest masters of English prose. His language is simple, clear and vigorous. He said, “Proper words in proper places, makes the true definition of a style.” Swift is a master of satirist, and his irony is deadly. But his satire is masked by an outward gravity, and an apparent calmness conceals his bitter irony. This makes his satire all the more powerful, as shown in his Modest Proposal.作品:1)Two stories: A Tale of a Tub; The Battle of the Books(The two stories made him well-known as a satirist.)2) Novel:Gulliver’s Travels3) Pamphlets :The Drapier’s Letters; A Modest Proposal(Swift’s pamphlets in Ireland form avery important part of his works.)3Samuel Richardson(1689-1761)His main achievement as a novelist lies in his technique to show characters as personalities. Psychological analysis.作品:Pamela (The story is a told in a series of letters from the heroine, Pamela Andrews. Clarissa; Sir Charles Grandison.Pamela was a new thing in three ways:Firstly, it discarded the “improbable and marvellous”accomplishment of the former heroic romances, and pictured the life and love of ordinary people.Secondly, its intension was to afford not merely entertainment but also moral instruction. Thirdly, it described not only the sayings and doings of the characters but also their secret thoughts and feelings. It was, in fact, the first English psycho-analytical novel.4Henry Fielding(1707-1754)1)简介:As a novelist, Fielding is very great. He is the founder of the English realistic novel and sets up the theory of realism in literary.“Nature herself,” i.e., the exact observation and study of real life, was the basis of Fielding’s work. Byron, in a famous phrase, called Fielding “the prose Homer of Human Nature”. Fielding established once for all the form of the modern novel. His importance in the history of the novel is unique. He has been rightly call the “father of the English novel”.2)作品:Novels:①Joseph Andrews ②Jonathan Wild ③Tom Jones(流浪汉小说) ④AmeliaPicaresque Novel(流浪汉小说)is a popular sub-genre of prose fiction, which is usually satirical and depict in realistic and humorous details the adventures of a roguish hero of low social class, who lives by his or her wits in a corrupt society. The characteristic of it is loosely linked episodes, intrigue fights and adventures. The style of this novel originated in Spain and flourished in Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, and continued to influence modern literature. In England, Tobias Smollett’s works, Daniel Defoe’s “Moll Flanders”, Fielding’s “Tom Jones”, and Charles Dickens’“Pickwick Papers” are considered to be picaresque novels. In modern America, Sawl Bellow’s “Adventure of Augie March”, Jack Kerouac’s “Dharma Bums” can be called picaresque novels. The Chinese “Journey to the Wrest” is considered to has considerable elements of picaresque.3)Some Features of Fielding’s Novels①Fielding’s method of Relating a Story: told directly by the author.②Satire in Fielding’s Novels. Satire sounds everywhere in Fielding’s works.③Fielding believed in the educational function of the novel.④Style. Fielding is a master of style. His style is easy, unlaboured and familiar, but extremely vivid and vigorous.5Tobias Smollett(1721-1771)He is a Scottish. He belonged to the realistic school.作品:Roderick Random, Peregrine Pickle, Humphry Clinker, History of England.6Laurence Sterne(1713-1768)He is a novelist of the sentimentalist school. He was born in Ireland.A Sentimental Journey. The drama of the 18th century was extensive, but very little of it has permanent or acting value. Only two men, Goldsmith and Sheridan, produced works which are of high literary quality and which are still remain their interest upon the stage.1Oliver Goldsmith(1730-1774)Goldsmith was a poet, novelist, dramatist and essayist, all combined in one person. He was born in Ireland.Comedies: The Good-Natured Man, She Stoops to Conquer2、Richard Brinsley Sheridan(1751-1816)was, like Goldsmith, an Irishman. His literary fame rests almost exclusively uponhis dramas. His dramas are sufficient to maintain his reputation as one of the most brilliant of English writers of Comedy.戏剧作品:①The Rivals, ②The School for Scandal(It gives a brilliant portrayal and a biting satire ofIn the first half of the 18 century, Pope was the leader of English poetry and the heroic couplet the fashion of poetry. But the middle of the century, however, sentimentalism gradually made its appearance. The appearance and development of sentimentalist poetry marks the midway in the transition from classicism to its opposite, Romanticism, in English poetry.Sentimentalism : It is a literary current started in the middle of 18th century. It is a part of the Pre-Romantic trend as reaction against the cold, logic rationalism that dominated people’s life and writing since the last decade of the 17th century. It appeared to sentiment as a means of achieving happiness and social justice. They believed that the effective emotions were the evidence of kindness and goodness. A ready sympathy and an inward pain for the misery of others became part of accepted social morality and ethics. Their words reveal a purely emotional approach to life on the part of the narrator. They formed the contrast of rationally composed novel. The most outstanding figure of this school was Laurence Stern who composed “Tristram Shandy”and “Sentimental Journey through France to Italy”. Samuel Richardson’s work also belong to this school because he used a lot of psychological analysis. Oliver Goldsmith’s work, especially “The Vicar of Wakefield”is of this time. Thomas Gray, a member of Graveyard school is a member of sentimental school, because Graveyard School is part of Sentimental School.1Laurence Sterne(1713-1768)He is a novelist of the sentimentalist school. He was born in Ireland.作品:Tristram Shandy, A Sentimental Journey.2Thomas Gray(1716-1771):作品:Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. (This is a poem full of the gentle melancholy which marks all early romantic poetry.)Graveyard School: is a term applied to the 18th century poets who wrote melancholy, reflective works, often set in graveyard, on the theme of human morality. The dominant imageries are graveyard, death and darkness. They are part of Sentimental School in the 18th century literature. Thomas Gray’s “Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” was the best known example for the time.Elegy: It is an ancient form of writing. Its tradition can be traced back to Greek. It is a kind of war song, the song that eulogizes the warring spirit, especially to celebrate the victory of the war and to lament upon the dead. Later, thiswriting is used for lamentation over one’s loss, one’s complaint, one’s unhappiness or things like that. In France, people sometimes use elegy for love lyric.3Oliver Goldsmith(1730-1774)Goldsmith was a poet, novelist, dramatist and essayist, all combined in one person. He was born in Ireland.作品:⑴Poems:①The Traveller is based on Goldsmith’s personal observation during his European wanderings. He came to the conclusion that human happiness depends less on political institution than onour own minds.②The Deserted Village is Goldsmith’s best poem. It contains some charmingdescriptions of village life. He marks the depopulation in the countryside owing to the inroads ofmonopolizing riches.⑵Novel: The Vicar of Wakefield. His novel appeals to human sentiment as a means of achieving happinessand social justice. That is why he is acknowledged to be one of the representatives of English sentimentalism.⑶Comedies: The Good-Natured Man, She Stoops to Conquer⑷Essays: The Citizen of the World.Goldsmith’s place as one of the greatest English essayists is mainlyIn the latter half of the 18century, a new literary monument arose in Europe, called the Romantic Revival. In England, this movement showed itself in the trend of Pre-Romanticism in poetry, which was ushered by Percy, Macpherson and Chatterton, and represented by Blake and Burns, the two greatest romantic poets of the 18th century.Pre-Romanticism:It rose as a reaction against enlightenment and neoclassicism, especially against reasons advocated by them. It originated by conservative groups men of letters and rose in the latter half of 18th century. The representatives are Thomas Gray, William Blake and Robert Burns.1William Blake(1757-1827)①The earliest of the major English Romantic poets.②Like Shelley, Blake strongly criticized the capitalists' cruel exploitation, saying that the "dark satanic mills left menunemployed, killed children & forced prostitution."③From childhood, Blake had a strongly visual mind; whatever he imagined, he also saw. As an imaginative poet, hepresents his view in visual images instead of abstract terms. " I know that This world is a world of IMAGINATION & Vision," & that "The Nature of my work is visionary or imaginative."④Blake writes his poems in plain & direct language.works:①The Songs of Innocence is a lovely volume of poems, presenting a happy & innocent world, though not without its evils & sufferings.②The Songs of Experience paints a different world, a world of misery, poverty, disease, war &repression with a melancholy tone.③Marriage of Heaven & Hell marks his entry into maturity.④The Book of Urizen, The Book of Los,The Four Zoas,Milton2、Robert Burns(1759-1796)He is the greatest of Scottish poets. He devoted all his free time to collecting, editing, restoring and imitating traditional Scottish songs, or writing verses of his own to traditional tunes.works:①Burns is remembered mainly for his songs written in the Scottish dialect on a variety of subjects.②Numerous are Burns’ songs of love and friendship.

The Romantic Period1、Romanticism: At the turn of the 18th and 19th century, Romanticism came to be the new trend in English literature. It rose and grew under the imperus of Industria Revolution and the French Revolution. It prevailed in England during the period of 1798-1832. Romanticism was expressed almost entirely in Poetry. It was a reaction to neoclassicism. It stressed vitality, powerful emotion, limitles s and dreamlike thoughts, thus making the contrast with neoclassicism which was associated with order, common sense and controlled reason.Generally speaking, the Romanticits expressed the ideology and sentiment of those class of social status who were discontened with and opposed to the development of capitalism. But owing to the difference in political attitude, they split into two schools: the first and the second genetation of Romantic poets. The former was represented by Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey. They reflected on the classes who got ruined by the bourgeoisie. By way of protesting agai nst capitalist development, they turned to the past, ie. the “Marry Old England” as their ideal. The younger Rimanticists expressed the aspiration of the class created by capitalism and held out an ideal, though a vague one, of a future society free from pression and exploitation. And they were represented by Byron, Shelley and Keats.2、OdeOde is a long lyrical poem that is serious in subject and treatment, elevated in style, and elaborate in its stanzaic structure. The prototype was established by the Greek poet Petrarca whose odes were modeled on the songs by the chorus in Greek drama. In modern use, it is a rhymed lyric , often in a form of an address, generally dignigied or exalted in subject, feeling and style, but sometimes symple and familiar. The masterpieces in English ode include, “Ode to the West Wind”, “Ode to a Nightingale” and “Ode on a Grecian Urn”.1William W ordsworth(1770-1850)作品:The Prelude(his greatest work) ; Lyrical Ballads(with Coleridge); Tintern Abbey; We Are Seven; My Heart Leaps Up.2)His poetic outlook:①Wordsworth is regarded as a " worshipper of nature." To Wordsworth, nature embodies, human beings in their diverse circumstances. It is nature that gives him "strength & knowledge full of peace."②Common life is Wordsworth's only subject of literary interest. The joys & sorrows of the common people are his themes. His sympathy always goes to the suffering poor, especially poor children.3)Achievement①The most important contribution he has made is that he has started the modern poetry, the poetry of the growing inner self.②He also changed the course of English poetry by using ordinary speech of the language & by advocating a return to nature.Lake poets: Samuel T aylor Coleridge(1772-1834), Robert Southey(1774-1843), William Wordsworth(1770-1850)2W alter Scott(1771-1832)作品:①ballad: Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border②Poetry:The Lay of the Last Minstrel; Lady of the Lake③Novels: Wavery; Rob Roy; Ivanhoe3Jane Austen(1775-1817))作品:①②Sense & Sensibility ③Northanger Abbey ④Mansfield Park⑤Emma ⑥Persuasion.2)写作特色:Jane Austen first gave the novel its modern character through the treatment of everyday life.1)Austen's novels describe a narrow range of society & events:a quiet, prosperous, middle class circle in provincial surroundings, which she knew well from her own experience2)Her subject matter is also limited, for most of her novels deal with the subject of getting married, which was in fact the central problem for the young leisure-class lady of that age,who had no other choice in her life but to find a good husband.3)Austen's interest was in human nature;in her depiction of human nature, instead of being fascinated by great waves of elevated emotion,by passion or heroic experience, she focused on the trivial & petty details of everyday living, which became very interesting through her truthful & lively description.4)Austen's novels are brightened by their witty conversation & omnipresent humor. Her language shines with an exquisite touch of lively gracefulness, elegant & refined, but never showy.4Charles Lamb(1775-1834)作品:①the Essays of Elia,②Tales from Shakespeare,③Dream Children, ④Poor Relations,⑤Speciments ofEnglish Dramatic Poets Contemporary with Shakespeare.5George Gordon, Lord Byron(1788-1824)1) 作品Children Harold’s Pilgrimage; Oriental Tales; Manfred; Cain; Don Juan②Short lyricsWhen We Two Parted; She Walks in Beauty2) Artistic AchievementByronic HeroAs a leading Romanticist, Byron's chief contribution is his creation of the " Byronic hero," a proud & mysterious rebel figure of noble origin. With immense superiority in his passions & powers, the Byronic hero would carry on his shoulders the burden of righting all the wrongs in an evil society, & would fight single-handedly against any kind of tyrannical rules either in government, in religion or in moral principles with unconquerable wills & inexhaustible energies. The conflict is usually one of rebellious individuals against outworn social systems & convention. Such a hero appears first in Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, & then further developed in later works such as Oriented Tales, Manfred, & Don Juan in different guises. The figure is, to some extent, modeled on the life & personality of Byron himself, & makes Byron famous both at home and abroad.6Percy Bysshe Shelley(1792-1822)作品:Prose:Defence of PoetryPoem: A Song: “Men of England”;"To a Skylark" ;"Ode to the West Wind";Queen Mab; The Revolt of Islam; The Maspue of Anarchy.7John Keats(1795-1821)”墓志铭:Here lies one whose name was writ in water.1)作品:Endymion; Ode to a Nightingale; Ode on an Grecian Urn; Lamia, Isabella, The Eve of St.Agnes,& Other Poems.2)济慈四大颂歌:①Ode to a Nightingale;②Ode on a Grecian Urn ③To Autumn;④To Melncholy。

1.What are the essential features of Neoclassicism in the18th-century England? Key:(1)Glorious Revolution happened at the end of17th Century. With the firmly established political power of the middle class, capitalism flourished rapidly in England, especially after1769in which year James Watt(1736-1819)invented the steam engine.(2)To match the rapid development of economy, there emerged in Britain a number of great thinkers of social sciences.(3)London and many other cities soon became big metropolises and a working class was also being formed during the process.(4)People of the18th-century England attached great importance to Reason and joined in the great Enlightenment Movement.(5)However,when science and reason were promoted, religion felt threatened. the major Neoclassic representative writers of this period and introduce their major achievements.Key:The Age of Classicism,or rather of Neoclassicism,in English Literary History refers to the literary trend in the first half of the18th century. The new literature reached its peak with strong concentration and vigour,of which Alexander Pope was its central figure.Besides Pope,Swift was also its outstanding representative. The two writers are great masters of satire and poetry in heroic couplet, which are the most prominent achievements of English Neoclassicism.Pope’s major achievements lie in his representative works such as The Rapeof the Lock,On Literary Criticism,The Dunciad,An Essay on Man and Translations of Homer, etc.Jonathan Swift’s major works include The Battle of the Books(1704),A Tale of a Tub(1704),Bickerstaff Almanac(1708),Gulliver’s Travels(1726),The Drapier’s Letters(1726)and A Modest Proposal(1729),etc.ment on Pope’s literary contributions.Key:When Pope died in1744the Neoclassicism as a literary trend to represent the Enlightenment Movement in England had ebbed toward its end. But,as a great satirist and master of language and an ingenious poet who had brought the heroic couplet to its perfection,Alexander Pope has acquired an immortal place in the history of English literature.4.Analyse Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels.Key:Gulliver’s Travels is the work that has made Swift known all over the world, which is not a real novel in the modern sense, but rather a satirical allegory that tells improbable and fantastic events with the purpose of criticising his contemporary reality. The novel consists of Lemuel Gulliver’s four travels, arranged in4books.Gulliver was a physician, but could not earn enough money in London to support his family. Therefore,he found a doctor’s position on a ship to sail overseas. The first two travels, that is Gulliver’s adventures in Lilliput, the country of tiny men and Brobdingnag, the country of the giants, are the mostwidely-read parts of the book, and they are often adapted into reading material or cartoons for children and young readers. The third and fourth adventures are more philosophical and demanding and,as a result, they are less known to the general reading public, but are dearly liked by serious and mature readers.Gulliver’s Lilliput experience is aimed at criticising the English government and exposing the political and religious problems of England. In Book II,he introduces England proudly to the king of Brobdingnag, boasting about its law system, and the wars fought in the English history, and recommends weapons of all kinds to be very effective reigning tools to the Brobdingnag king, who is surprised by the cruelty and meanness of races like Gulliver’s.In both Books I and II,Swift displays to the full his rich imagination,by playing with the smallness of the Lilliputians and the giant figures of the Brobdingnag people against Gulliver and achieves many fantastically humourous and satirical effects. In the third and fourth books,Gulliver experiences even more unbelievable adventures. In the third one, that is Gulliver’s adventure in the country of the Flying Island,Swift fulfills the task set to him by the Scriblerus Club to expose and ridicule false learning, and he did so to a burlesque degree. For instance, people on the Flying Island do not know how to live a good and normal life. They are solely interested in mathematics and music. In consequence, they wear ill-fitting clothes decorated with music notes and geometry shapes. On land below, the scientists in the Academy of Lagado,a colony of the Flying Island, are all engaged in the most impossible experiments, such as to extract sunshine from cucumbers,to restore food from human excrement, and to build houses from top to the bottom.Through such bitter attacks on modern science Swift intended to ridicule all the false learning of his time. But,here we must notice that as a staunch Christian of the Church of England,Swift was also worried about the encroaching of science into the spiritual scope of human beings. He was trying at the same time to give warnings to those who are overly enthusiastic about the omnipotence of science at the expense of human love and humanistic spirit. In this book,he also criticises early imperialist ventures of England. The fourth book has been generally regarded as the most shocking of the four, because in it Swift describes men as so low and depraved that they are made to serve the horses. His last adventure brings Gulliver to the country of horses,or of the Houyhnhnms, and here he sees an animal of human shape called yahoo. The yahoos are filthy beasts of strong passion with hair covering a human body.Their masters are horses with good manners, clean living habits and absolute reason. They live in wood houses and eat hay, fruits, and vegetables. In contrast to the horse masters, yahoos are chained in a dirty yard when they are not doing any work of the beasts of burden. They eat rotten meat, dead mice and frog, sleep wallowing in the mud and often fall to fighting each other over the most trivial things. What is more, the yahoos are all fond of colored stones, which, if found by a yahoo, will be hidden like treasures, and yahoos all the time fight each other over the possession of them. Here,Swift is referring to those European imperialists who go overseas to plunder wealth of other countries.Thegray horse that Gulliver stays with points out the similarities of his guest to his yahoos, but because Gulliver is dressed, the horse master finally believes him to be different. Here,Swift makes Gulliver number to the horse master all the wars, cheatings, the dissipation of the life of the rich and the dire poverty of the poor, and tell all other sorts of ill maneuvers of the Europeans to the horse master. He boasts of his fellow human beings’crimes of plunder and killing, which shocks the horses to the extreme.By portraying human beings as depraved and disgusting yahoos and setting them against the noble horses that are guided by reason,Swift is launching the most severe attack on humanity and the European reality. But on the other hand,he is also criticising absolute reason represented by the cool-headed horses, who never have problems caused by love or passion. In the fourth book,Swift’s attack is,first of all, aimed at his fellow men who have fallen so low that Swift wants to use yahoos to shock them into realising their depravity.Because of this, for a long time,he is criticised as a misanthropist who hates human race to the point of eulogising the horses as their betters. However,on the other hand,by presenting Gulliver’s crazy worship of reason in the form of the horse in the most burlesque way,Swift is also criticising absolute reason. What he advocates is,man of Christian faith and benevolence.Such people can guide their own behaviour with Christian morals, and be free from selfish desires and passion on the one hand, but on the other hand they are by no means as cold and indifferent as absolute reason advocates. two important newspapers of the period and tell what you know about them.Key:The Tatler(1709-1711)and The Spectator(1711-1712)were two important newspapers of the period. At first,it was Steele who started The Tatler, coming out three issues a week to carry the domestic and foreign news, poetry and drama, and there were some special columns like“From My Own Apartment”,to which Swift made frequent contributions.Pretending to be a Mr.Isaac Bickerstaff whose comments on restoration plays were sharp literary criticism. There was also a main persona Mr. Tatler who discussed all kinds of social, political and literary topics with his readers. It was a newspaper very much in the satirical style of Swift and focused on the didactic aim of educating the populace.Due to Steele’s lack of subtlety, The Tatler on the whole was short of literary flavor and sometimes offended people, and thus its popularity gradually dwindled. In January1711,The Tatler had to terminate its publication. Two months later with Addison joining Steele The Spectator was born.It was a daily newspaper with only one essay per issue, all of which were almost totally written by Addison and Steele themselves, and Addison, rather than Steele, influenced both its style and the content. The main character Mr.Spectator discussed, for instance, what he had seen when traveling on the Continent, commenting on issues of a broad scale. Many of the articles were of an enlightening nature and thus met with the eager popular demand for knowledge。

P96-1018. Tobias George Smollett (1721-1771): The Adventures of Roderick Random《
