吉林省名校2019届高三下学期英语第一次联合模拟考试试卷一、阅读理解(共4题;共15分)1.(3分)阅读理解Christmas is a time for eating great food, giving and receiving presents, and most importantly spending time with your family watching some classic Christmas movies. The Grinch(2000)This is a Christmas must-watch and one of Jim Carrey's best performances. It was also originally a nursery tale book written by Dr Seuss. It's the story of a green monster who wants to ruin Christmas but who in the end discovers the power of love and generosity.I promise it's a great film with plenty of laughs along the way.Love Actually(2003)While this is not a personal favourite of mine, people in the UK absolutely love this film.It has many featuring actors and actresses. It might be a little difficult to follow as there are complex plots,so I recommend watching a translated version or enabling subtitles(字幕)in your native language. However, the heart-warming elements of the film make it worth watching.Home Alone(1990)This amusing masterwork is one of my favourite films of all time.It tells the story of a boy,Kevin, who is left alone in his house when his large family forgets to take him on vacation with them. While the families are away, burglars try to rob the house and Kevin must protect his home by setting traps. The trips, falls and traps will have you laughing out loud as you watch a10-year-old boy beat two grown men. Miracle on34th Street(1994)You can't have Christmas in an English-speaking country without watching this movie. It's not funny like Home Alone or The Grinch, but it is incredibly touching. It's about a man who claims to be Santa, but nobody believes him except a lawyer and a little girl. The story-line may seem a little childish but you can enjoy it at any age.(1)(1分)Which film is adapted from a fairy tale?A.The Grinch.B.Home Alone.C.Love Actually.D.Miracle on34th Street.(2)(1分)What is Home Alone mainly about?A.An unsuccessful family vacation.B.A boy protecting home by himself.C.A terrible suffering to a little boy.D.A10-year-old boy's practical jokes.(3)(1分)Why is Miracle on34th Street so popular?A.Owing to its moving plots.B.Because of its funny story.C.Due to its childish storyline.D.For its famous actors and actresses.2.(4分)阅读理解As Simon Kindleysides,34,took his first step in the London Marathon in April,he felt as if magic was in the air."As we were walking toward the first mile,we actually started joining all the runners,"he said. "Everyone was on the streets, cheering, and that was a magical moment."As time went on,the crowds and other racers spread around.Kindleysides and his team of eight supporters continued walking.Kindleysides, who is paralyzed(瘫痪的)from the waist down and typically uses a wheelchair, was equipped with an exoskeleton(体外骨骼)to help him walk. His supporters walked with him to change the batteries in his exoskeleton so he could keep moving.In2013,Kindleysides was diagnosed with a brain tumor(肿瘤)that was growing in a way that pressed on certain nerves, leading to him losing feeling in his legs.He was told he would never walk again. Before his paralysis, the London-based singer and dancer had"always wanted to run a marathon,"he said, but he never made the plan to do so--until this year.During the London Marathon, the last two miles were the hardest."At that point,I was exhausted. It was freezing cold, and I was hurting emotionally,"Kindleysides said. But he kept going."I didn't want to let people down.I had a team of eight, and I was raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity,"he said."I didn't want to let them down, myself down, and I thought if I would get this far,I would have to continue."So he continued and made history as the first paralyzed man to complete the London Marathon on foot. Then, recovering at home,he shared his accomplishment with his three children."They used to say I'm the only dad in their whole school who's in a wheelchair, and now they say I'm their dad,the only one who has walked a marathon,"he said.Kindleysides is training to complete three more marathons next year, including the London Marathon again.(1)(1分)Why did Kindleysides'supporters accompany him all the way?A.To inspire him as a team.B.To help change the batteries.C.To guide him along the road.D.To assist him with the communicate and coordinate(协调)with one another and improve memory function, according to an encouraging new study. The scientists invited36people of different ages to the lab and had them sit quietly on a fixed bicycle for10minutes or,on a separate visit, pedal the bicycle at a pace so gentle that it barely raised their heart rates. It also was short, lasting for only10minutes.Immediately after each session of the sitting or slow pedaling, the people completed a computerized memory test during which they would see a brief picture of,for instance,a tree, followed by a variety of other images and then a new image of either the same tree or a similar one.The people would press buttons to show whether they thought each image was new or the same as an earlier shot. The test is difficult, since many of the images closely resemble one another. It requires rapid, skillful scanning recent memories to decide whether a picture is new or known.Next, the scientists had each people repeat this process--riding or sitting on the bike for10minutes and then completing memory testing--but the testing now took place inside an M.R.I.machine(磁共振成像仪)that scanned the people's brains while they responded to the images. Then the researchers compared results. The effects of the exercise were clear. The people were better at remembering images after they had ridden the bike, especially when the images most closely resembled one another. In other words, the harder their memories had to do their best, the better they performed after the exercise. The M.R.I.scans showed that memory parts of each people's brain lit up at the same time with parts of the brain associated with learning, indicating that these physically separate parts of the brain were better connected now than when the people had not first exercised.(1)(1分)How did the researchers conduct the study?A.By filling up questionnaires.B.By interviewing many people.C.By comparing experiment data.D.By referring to historical reports.(2)(1分)Who might benefit most from the study result?A.The marketers promoting fixed bicycles.B.The young people crazy about body building.C.The white collars doing long-term mental work.D.The blue-collars doing heavy physical labor work.(3)(1分)Which of the following statements agrees with the study result?A.The light exercise is only good for young people.B.The more the exercise is,the better the brain works.C.The exercise can coordinate different parts of the body.D.The exercise has more positive effect when the brain works harder.(4)(1分)What can be the best title for the text?A.Even ten minutes'exercise may be good for the brainB.There is no need for humans doing exercise every dayC.Only ten minutes'light exercise benefits the young mostD.Exercise can change people's brains and minds in a long time4.(4分)阅读理解The University of Birmingham is the first excellent UK Russell Group university to announce that it will accept the"Gaokao"exam for high-flying Chinese 2019届吉林省高三上期第一次阶段性测试英语卷【含答案及解析】

2019届吉林省高三上期第一次阶段性测试英语卷【含答案及解析】姓名___________ 班级____________ 分数__________一、阅读理解1. I was driving from Harrisburg to Lewisburg last night, a distance of about eighty miles. It was late. Several times I got stuck behind a slow-movingtruck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I was clinching (紧握)my fists with impatience. At one point along an open highway, I came to a crossroads with the traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I approached the light, itturned red and I braked to stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of headlights, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.I started wondering why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being arrested, because there were obviously no police around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it's part of an agreement we all havewith each other. It's not only the law, but it's an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights. It's amazing that we ever trust each other to do the right thing, isn't it? And we do, too. Trust is our first tendency. We have to make a deliberate decision to mistrust someone or to be suspicious or skeptical. Those attitudes don't come naturally to us.It's a very good thing too, because the whole structure of our society depends on mutual trust, not distrust. This whole thing around us would fall apart if we didn't trust each other most of the time. We do what we say we'll do; we show up when we say we'11 show up;we deliver when we say we'lldeliver;and we pay when we say we'11 pay. We trust each other in these matters, and when we don't do what we've promised, it's far from the normal. It happensoften that we don't act in good faith and in a trustworthy manner, but westill consider it unusual, and we're angry or disappointed with those badly-behaved people. Anyway I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.1.Why did the author feel impatient while driving?A. Because he had already driven for a long time.B. Because it was too far away from his destination.C. Because he could not overpass a truck on a narrow road.D. Because something urgent happened in his family.2.The author stopped at the traffic light because ________ .A. there were passers-by crossing the roadB. some policemen were on duty just at that pointC. there was potential dangerD. the trust between people influenced the author3.What would happen if people didn't trust each other in most cases?A. The social system would be thrown into disorder.B. All the things would run normally.C. Th e social traditions would be abandoned.D. Strict rules and laws would be made.4.What is the theme of the passage?A. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.B. Mutual Trust is the best policy.C. Actions speak louder than words.D. Among the blind the one-eyed is the king .2. Great Yarmouth is an English seaside town situated at the mouth of the River Yare, about 120 miles to the northeast of London. Around 5 million people visit Great Yarmouth every year, making it one of Britain’s most popular seaside resorts.Formerly the home of one of the most profitable fishing industries, Great Yarmouth is a busy and very popular seaside resort. The Great Yarmouth Outer Harbour is a huge development currently taking place which can see larger ships coming to the town. The Great Yarmouth Maritime(海上的) Festival in September each year celebrates Great Yarmouth’s maritime heritage.Over the past few years, Great Yarmouth has seen significant construction spending to improve and modernize the popular seafront area and to ensure itis linked to the town centre. My mom takes pride in the fact that I was talking in three and four word sentences before I was ten months old. Some say it’s a gift while others simply think I talk too much.As my thirties came to a close, I found my self reflecting on my life. I’m very happy and have no significant regrets. However, when I looked back on those times of difficulty, I saw a clear common denominator(特征); I didn’tseem to know when to stop talking. Whether it was hurting someone’s feeling s, or having carelessly told a secret, the incident could have been avoided had I closed my mouth sooner. So I decided to practice the power of quiet. To take this step, I needed to understand how people could sit comfortably in a group and not talk. Why does my husband feel completely content to say nothing in a conversation? He’s highly intelligent and has wonderful opinions but he’ll sit quietly and just listen. Even when he’s asked a pointed question, he’ll answer with few words while still communicati ng effectively. What a talent! Can you imagine being happy just listening? In surveying those I know whotalk less than I do, I got two answers—they either didn’t feel confident enough to speak up, or they just didn’t feel the need to participate in the conversation. Of course there were other reasons for not talking, but these were the two most popular answers. The first one didn’t work for me. I’m just fine letting people know what I think about them, and hopefully it will make the conversation much more interesting. The second one didn’t work either. I do feel the need to participate. I feel it physically like an electrical pulse through my body; sometimes it’s so strong that it causes me to behave badly in the form of interrupting or speaking in an unusually loud voice. I had to look further. An interesting thing happened on this journey to the power of quiet. During my weekly yoga class, it came to me like an answer so clear that the words rang in my head like soft, heavenly bells.I talked too much so people would know I cared about them. It was my way of taking care of those I love. I decided before my fortieth birthday, that from that day forward, those around me would know I loved them, and cared what they thought and felt, but I was going to practice the power of quiet. As my forty-second birthday approaches, I can say that deciding to talk less has been more about focusing on quality rather than quantity. I’ve found that listening more shows those who I care about that I really do care how they feel. Now when I break in, it means more to them. Oh, sure, I still have my short periods of talking too much, but for the most part this has been one resolution that I can call a success.1.In Paragraph 3 the writer mentions her husband mainly ________ .A. to show how one communicates effectivelyB. to explain the reason for his silence in a conversationC. to give an example of those who have the power of quietD. to give her high opinion of his communication skills2.By “I had to look further”, the writer means she had to ________ .A. look into the future in order to succeed in practicing the power of quietB. try harder to prevent herself from talking too muchC. survey people in other areas who talk littleD. find out other reasons why she should talk less3.Which of the following best describe the writer’s character?A. Kind but pessimistic.B. Loving and active.C. Selfless but proud.D. Stubborn and sensitive.4. A survey has shown that what you do on a plane can be determined b y which nationality is listed on your passport.According to the results of an international passenger survey, Australians are the biggest drinkers on board with 36 percent choosing to down the hatch, compared to 35 percent of Americans and 33 percent of Brits. The Airline Passenger Experience Association(APEX) spoke to around 1,500 people, aged 18 and older, who have travelled by plane at least once during the last three months and were living in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, China, Singapore, Australia and Brazil. The results found Chinese travelers are most likely to nod off once the seat-belt sign switches off. They are also the first to take out their credit card for some in-flight shopping and the biggest fans of gaming. Americans on the other hand like to use their time in the air more productively—when not drinking—choosing to work while flying at 35,000 feet.Meanwhile, Brits and Germans are the best at making chat with random strangers—spending 50 percent more time than any other nationality. Comparatively, Brazilians conduct their conversations online via email, messaging apps or social media.Despite plane food having a bad reputation, seven out of ten interviewees said they were happy to eat up on the selection of in-flight snacks and meals. In-flight magazines were also popular with four out of five passengers. The international flyers did however express their desire for better in-flight entertainment. “The industry has greatly improved the comfort, entertainment and on board service, and passengers are accepting those improvements” said Russell Lemieux, APEX executive director. “At the same time, passengers are demanding more from their air travel experiences which will drive more improvements touching all aspects o f the journey. ” he added.1. 吉林省吉林市2019年高考英语一模试卷一、阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分) (共4题;共30分)1.(6分)阅读理解The hottest cities in the worldThe locations below are the hottest and also travel destinations on the planet.BangkokAccording to the data, Bangkok is the hottest city on the planet﹣not because of any particularly impressive high temperatures, but because it is consistently hot all the year round. The city has an average annual temperature of 29℃, coupled with high dampness and an average of 128rainy days per year; while the highest temperature on record is 40℃.Timbuktu, MaliLocated on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert, the African city of Timbuktu is similar to everything remote. It's also one of the hottest cities in the world, with a hot, dry climate offering record highs of 49℃. Throughout April, May and June, average maximum temperatures are beyond 40℃. Modern﹣day Timbuktu is slowly being swallowed by the desert and is certainly a shadow of the trade center that it once was.Ahvaz, IranBuilt on the bank of the Karun River, Ahvaz is an industrial city with average highs of around 46℃ during July, its warmest month. The city's record high is 54℃, making it one of the world's hottest cities during the summer. Frequent sand and dust storms and an absence of rain from July to September mix with its sky﹣high temperatures.Kuwait CityThe wealthy capital of Kuwait is another competitor for the title of the world's hottest summertime city with average highs of over 45℃ from June to August. Nightfall brings little respite(缓解), with after ﹣dark low temperatures often over 30℃ during the summer months. There was a line at the fish counter, but only one staff person was there to take care of the customers. Some customers ordered quite an amount of fish for that staff person to work on. At last I was the second in line; all I wanted was a couple of crabs and should get out of there in no time.Noticing it was very busy at the fish counter, another staff person came over to help. I was ready to be served, but the staff person went to the end of the line and began to help a couple of ladies with snails (蜗牛).The customer in front of me, being served, turned around and looked at me sympathetically, and the customer behind me called to the staff person, "You should start her, "pointing at me. He was, well, ignored. If someone asked me, "What is the most important rule to follow in America?"I would reply without hesitation, "Wait your turn at all times." Wherever you go here in this country, you will find people waiting in a line quietly to get anything: whether in the supermarkets, department stores, bus stops, or gas stations, it's just a matter of waiting your turn. In a larger sense, "wait your turn" is more than just a guideline ﹣it is a very basic norm (准则)that reflects the fundamental value of the western cultures. But in some situations your turn does not always come based on when you get there and how long you have waited in line, just like my case at the store. Even though this did not often happen, it did make me feel upset.(1)(2分)What happened to the author at the store?A.He wasn't served upon his order.B.He was ill-treated by a customer.C.He was asked to be served later.D.He was asked to do others a favor.(2)(2分)What is the author's opinion about Queuing Rule?A.Wait until being served.B.Serve people as one likes.C.Wait until your turn comes.D.First come, later served.(3)(2分)What does the underlined word "this" in the last paragraph refer to?A.His belief.B.His experience.C.His culture.D.His rule.(4)(2分)Why did the author write the text?A.To emphasize his kindness to others.B.To introduce some western cultures to us.C.To show his disbelief in Queuing Rule.D.To express his belief and his feeling.3.(8分)阅读理解One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school?Listen﹣Listen when they are talking. Don't say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it's not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings.Help them﹣If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don't do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra pencil or pen with you to classes in case they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need.Be there for them﹣Be there for your friends to help make them feel better in hard times. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, "I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control, but if you can't stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve to be with me at my best." Always remember this! If you don't want to stay with your friends when they're in hard times, then you don't deserve to be with them when they're having a good time!Make plans﹣Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you'll remember these things when you're all old!(1)(2分)While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should .A.give him or her some advice B.calm him or her downC.just listen unless asked D.share your feelings as well(2)(2分)When we provide help for our friends, we should .A.put them before ourselves B.try to do everything for themC.change their bad habits first D.ignore their faults(3)(2分)What can we learn from Marilyn Monroe's words?A.Life without a friend is death.B.A friend is easier lost than found.C.A man is known by his friends.D.A friend in need is a friend indeed.(4)(2分)What is probably the best title for the test?A.How to find a good friend.B.How to be a good friend.C.How to help friends in trouble.D.How to make more friends.4.(8分)阅读理解Even plant can run a fever, especially when they're under attack by insects or disease. But unlike human, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet away straight up. A decade ago, adopting the infrared(红外线)scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely(精确的)target pesticide(杀虫剂)spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which always includes plants that don't have pest problems.Even better, Paley's Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Fixed on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat sent out by crops. The data were transformed into a color﹣coded map showing where plants were running "fevers". Farmers could then spot﹣spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide that they otherwise would. The bad news is that Paley's company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long﹣term supporters were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce and refinements(改进)in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation. Agriculture experts have no doubt that the technology works. "This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States," says George Oerther of Texas A&M, who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only if Paley finds the financial support which he failed to obtain 10years ago.(1)(2分)Plants will give out an increased amount of heat when they are .A.facing an infrared scanner B.sprayed with pesticidesC.exposed to extreme sun rays D.in poor physical condition(2)(2分)In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely, we can use infrared scanning to .A.draw a color﹣coded mapB.evaluate the damage to the cropsC.locate the problem areaD.measure the size of the affected area(3)(2分)The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some difficulties of .A.the lack of official supportB.its high costC.the lack of financial supportD.its failure to help increase production(4)(2分)Infrared scanning technology may be brought back into operation because of .A.full support from agricultural expertsB.the forceful promotion by the Department of AgricultureC.the desire of farmers to improve the quality of their produceD.growing concern about the over use of pesticides on crops二、任务型阅读(每小题2分,满分10分) (共1题;共10分)5.(10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.How to stay focused in classBeing relaxed during class is a bad habit, and it is also bad to your grade. There are currently two desert farms in the world where quality vegetables are being planted cheaply and easily.Sundrop Farms, based in South Australia, uses experimental greenhouses to grow tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. The biggest challenge of growing food in a desert, obviously, is the lack of available water. The researchers at Sundrop Farms have gotten aroundthis problemby using the sun to desalinate (淡化) sea water. It can also be used to control the temperature of the greenhouses.Without depending on limited resources such as land and fresh water Sundrop Farms has made farming a practice. This can increase the world’s food supplies. Another benefit ofthis kind of farming is that it can be done anywhere, thus reducing the costs of transporting food to distant locations. Yet another benefit is that it reduces the need for pesticides (杀虫剂).Another experimental desert farm is the Sahara Forest Project, which began in Qatar in December 2012. Greenhouses in the farm are cooled by saltwater. Solar power and other technologies are used together to help make vegetation (植被) grow in the desert environment. As deserts have expanded over recent years around the world due to global warming, this project could solve the problem. The result form the Qatar project were better than expected and in June of 2014, Jordan agreed to host another one. This will be much bigger than the Qatar project and the project members will have even more opportunities to test their experiments on a much larger scale. It is not clear yet that desert farming resents the future of farming but these projects have shown some success in the field.4. What does “this problem” in paragraph 2 refer to?A. Sea water is bard to purify.B. The desert is short of water.C. The temperature is high in the desert.D. Desert farms aren’t fit to plant vegetables.5. What is one of the characters of desert farming?A. It needs more pesticides.B. It saves delivery costs.C. It has a location limit.D. It solves food waste problems6. What can we know about the Sabara Forest Project?A. It lives up to expectationsB. It can help produce more foodC. It is started to prevent global warmingD. It uses technology to produce saltwater7. What can be inferred about desert farming from the last paragraph?A. It still has problems to solve.B. It represents the future of farming.C. Its early success has aroused interest in it.D. Its aim is to create more job opportunities.CJack was 11 months old in the spring of 2015 when his parents, Erika and Christopher, recognized his development was not progressing as it should. The feeling was familiar to the couple. Just a few months earlier, Jack’s brother Chase, who is 16 months older, had been diagnosed with autism(自闭症) after he did not reach motion and language standards as expected.Jack’s behaviors were similarly delayed, and his parents moved quickly to seek help. Today, Jack is 5 — he celebrated his birthday on May 13 — and he can speak in full sentences and read. After two years at a preschool that specializes in services for children with developmental disabilities, he will start kindergarten in theSmithtownschool district in September. “Our family’s experience is a good example of the power and effectiveness of early intervention. The services our boys have received made all the difference,” the parents said.According to scientists, autism can be detected at 18 months or younger, and by age 2 a diagnosis can be considered “very reliable.” The parents said they were happy with Chase’s success at the learning center, but still had concerns for Jack because he was not speaking. Developing social and communication skills can be among thegreatest challenge for individuals with autism, even if they are able to say a few words early on. “We didn’t know if he was ever going to talk,” Erika said. “That was my biggest fear. We just didn’t know.”Looking ahead, the parents are cautiously optimistic about Jack’s next educational move. He doesn’t handle change well, they said, and he likes to know his routine. Still, they expressed confidence that his time at the learning center has given him the skills he needs to be successful.8. How did Jack’s parents know he suffered from autism?A. They found the baby clever.B. They judged by their experience.C. They found he didn’t develop.D. They checked on him in the hospital.9. What did the parents think of the early intervention?A. It made no difference to the babies.B. It benefitted the babies greatly.C. It got their babies more disabled.D. It helped their babies speak fluently.10. What can we learn from the third paragraph?A. Autism can be confirmed at 18 months old.B. Jack’s parents were confident about his motor skills.C. Chase’s parents were doubtful about his developmentD. Jack’s parents worried about his language skills most.11. What is the text mainly talking about?A. Autism can be curedif parents take actions early.B. Parents should be confident about their children’s future.C. Early intervention in autism could improve children’s life.D. Communication skills should be developed as early as possible.DWhen you walk with a backpack, do you know how the things inside move from side to side? Now scientists havefigured out how to tap into that movement to produce electricity.Picture a pendulum (摆锤) fixed to a backpack frame and stabilized with springs on either side. The pack’s weight is attached to the pendulum, so the pendulum swings side to side as you walk. Then a machine is driven by that swinging movement, and spits out electrical current to charge a battery.Volunteers carried the pack while walking on a running machine and wore masks to measure the flow of O2and CO2. Walking with the slightly swinging 20-pound load, the device (设备) did not significantly affect the volunteers’ metabolic (新陈代谢的) rate compared to when they carried the same weight fixed in place. In fact, the energy-harvesting pack reduced the forces of acceleration they’d feel in a regular pack, which might mean greater comfort for a long hike. And the device did produce a steady trickle (涓流) of electricity. If you up the load to 45 pounds, the swing of the pack could fully charge a smart phone only after 12 hours. The details are in the journal Royal Society Open Science. The device produces electricity from human movement and has been identified as a workable solution to providing a renewable energy source for portable electronic devices. It is particularly useful for those who work in remote areas, as these people often carry a lot of weight in a backpack for their exploration. But here’s a realconundrum: the energy-harvesting device currently weighs five pounds. The researchers say that’s about four pounds too many to be a smart alternative to batteries. So they hope that more research lets them lighten the load, to ensure the pack charges you up without weighing you down.12. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?A. How the device works.B. What the device looks like.C. Who the device is designed for.D. Why scientists designed the device.13. Which of the following describes the device?A. It greatly affected the volunteers metabolic rate.B. It harvested energy as the volunteers walk.C. It failed to produce steady electricity.D. It was useless for a long walk.14. What does the underlined word “conundrum” in the last paragraph mean?A. Problem.B. Method.C. Bond.D. Decision.15. What will the researchers try to do next?A. Increase the charging speed of their device.B. Find smarter alternatives to batteries.C. Reduce the weight of their device.D. Put their device on the market.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

fever, especially when they're under attack by insects or disease. But unlike human, plants can have their temperature taken from 3,000 feet away straight up.A decade ago, adopting the infrared(红外线)scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely(精确的)target pesticide(杀虫剂)spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which always includes plants that don't have pest problems.Even better,Paley's Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye.Fixed on a plane flown at 3,000 feet at night,an infrared scanner measured the heat sent out by crops. The data were transformed into a color ﹣coded map showing where plants were running "fevers".Farmers could then spot﹣spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide that they otherwise would. The bad news is that Paley's company closed down in 1984,after only three years.Farmers resisted the new technology and long﹣term supporters were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce and refinements(改进)in infrared scanning,Paley hopes to get back into operation.Agriculture experts have no doubt that the technology works."This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States," says George Oerther of Texas A& M,who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only if Paley finds the financial support which he failed to obtain 10years ago.(1)Plants will give out an increased amount of heat when they are.A.facing an infrared class not only proves to teachers that you are a capable student but also shows that you have the ability to control yourself, which will be very important.(1)No matter how much you want to sit with your friends during the class, try your best to avoid them.Talking with friends around you is not going to give you the focus in class. This will get you into trouble.Look at teacher and make eye contact.Your teacher is not just standing up there talking.(2)Show the teacher that he or she has your full attention by looking them in the eye. This person should have your full attention at all times during class.Take notes.By taking notes, you'll be able to "get into" the lesson.Write down key points as your teacher speaks. And listen to the key phrases such as "This is important""This is the main idea" "This will be the test" etc.(3)Get involved in class discussions. This is a wonderful way to become a more focused, successful student. When a teacher asks a question, offer to answer it.(4)This shows the teacher that you are listening carefully during the class.Ask a question.(5)This really shows your teacher that you want to be better, and can recognize the things you are having (4)double﹣edged sword because while we're awake during the day,we're building up sleepiness or sleep pressure. So when you try to fall asleep at night, you'll fall asleep quickly and then you'll stay asleep. And when we sleep,we actually release that sleepiness so that we wake up the next morning feeling (5)(refresh).So if you take a nap during the day, especially if you take it too late in the afternoon, you will actually release some of that sleepiness and it will make it much (6)(hard)to fall asleep and stay asleep soundly throughout the night. So the advice would be if you don't struggle shopping at the local Chinese grocery store. There was a line at the fish counter, but only one staff person was there to take care of the customers. Some customers ordered quite an amount of fish for that staff person to work on.At last I was the second in line;all I wanted was a couple of crabs and should get out of there in no time.Noticing it was very busy at the fish counter, another staff person came over to help.I was ready to be served, but the staff person went to the end of the line and began to help a couple of ladies with snails (蜗牛).The customer in front of me,being served, turned around and looked at me sympathetically, and the customer behind me called to the staff person,"You should start her,"pointing at me.He was, well, ignored. If someone asked me,"What is the most important rule to follow in America?"I would reply without hesitation,"Wait your turn at all times."Wherever you go here in this country, you will find people waiting in a line quietly to get anything:whether in the supermarkets, department stores, bus stops,or gas stations,it's just a matter of waiting your turn.In a larger sense,"wait your turn"is more than just a guideline﹣it is a very basic norm (准则)that reflects the fundamental value of the western cultures. But in some situations your turn does not always come based on when you get there and how long you have waited in line, just like my case at the to take care of the customers. But in some situations your turn does not always come based on when you get there and how long you have waited in line, just like my case at the store.Even though this did not often happen,it did make me feel upset.(1)What happened to the author at the friend at school?Listen ﹣Listen when they are talking.Don't say anything unless they ask you a question.Sometimes it's not necessary for you to have anything to say;they just need someone to talk to fever, especially when they're under attack by insects or disease. The bad news is that Paley's company closed down in 1984,after only threeyears.Farmers resisted the new technology and long﹣term supporters were hard to find. But only if Paley finds the financial support which he failed to obtain 10years ago.(1)Plants will give out an increased amount of heat when they are.A.facing an infrared scannerB.sprayed with pesticidesC.exposed to extreme sun raysD.in poor physical condition(2)In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely,we can use infrared scanning to.A.draw a color﹣coded mapB.evaluate the damage to the cropsC.locate the problem areaD.measure the size of the affected area(3)The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some difficulties of.A.the lack of official supportB.its high costC.the lack of financial supportD.its failure to help increase production(4)Infrared scanning technology may be brought back into operation because of.A.full support from agricultural expertsB.the forceful promotion by the Department of AgricultureC.the desire of farmers to improve the quality of their produceD.growing concern about the over use of pesticides on crops第二节(满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.15.(10分)How to stay focused in classBeing relaxed during class is a bad habit, and it is also bad to your grade.Focusing in
