'Sleep comes more easily than it returns.'— Victor Hugo, Les Misérables入睡容易,醒过来难——维克多.雨果《悲惨世界》A It is estimated that one in three adults in westernised countries regularly wakes up in the middle of the night and has difficulty getting back to sleep. Physicians often diagnose 'insomnia' and prescribe sleeping pills, but these often have side effects such as negative interactions with food, drink or other drugs, and most are habit-forming. Cessation of the medication frequently causes unpleasant withdrawal symptoms, too, including panic attacks, mood-swings, and even heightened sleep disturbance. Is there a way to treat insomnia without such debilitating consequences?

1. Describe one thing you got for free2. Describe a website you often browse3. Describe a plant or vegetable in your country4. Describe something you bought that made you happy5. Describe a big company organization that you know in your city二、具体题目分析:Describe something you bought that made you happyYou should say:What it isWhy you bought itHow you chose itAnd explain why you think it is specialSpeaking of something I bought that made me happy, I’d like to talk about my oven.If I recall correctly I think it was a Saturday afternoon when I was browsing the website of Taobao, the Chinese version of Amazon, there was a sales promotion commercial of an oven attracted me, and I was seized by whim--- why don’t I just buy one? Actually, there were tons of different brands and I just bought the best-selling one without hesitation and started the firsthand experience of baking.I have had a sweet tooth from a very young age, and I am particularly fond of desserts. The sweet tooth drives me to try nearly every kind of cake: cupcakes, puff, cookies and so forth. But I had never tried to make one on my own or even touch a real oven until I purchased one.It is hard and frustrating to start baking. I spent nearly a whole week learning to make a cake perfectly, I tried a bunch of times and also progressed through carefully weighing the powder, sugar and milk. I was thrilled when the beautiful cake was finally taken out from the oven.I feel it is special to me because, firstly it is always satisfying to eat something from your own hand, and secondly it reveals the importance of taking the first step. I always fail in things that I want badly at first, which is often because of my fear to getting started. I’ve learnt from baking that it isn’t as hard as I imagined; what I need to do is just take the first step. I believe this inspiration would be helpful to me in many ways.1月6日雅思听力真题回忆:Section 1场景:邮寄咨询题型:10 笔记填空参考答案:1-10) Table Completion1.a bicycle2.up to 40 pounds3.liquids or foods4.plastic5.Saturdays6.special service of storage7.Sweden8.5759.driver10. photocopy of passportSection 2场景:烹饪课程介绍题型:10 匹配题参考答案:11.North Carolina C. individual classes12.Italy H. provides bus tour13.New Orleans F. provides afternoon walking tours14.Budget Feasts G. making time-saving food15.Cooking for Two D. cooking for college students16.Variations in Theme A. using a particular ingredient17.Oven H18.Refrigerator F19.Demonstration Kitchen D20.Utensil Cabinet B (答案仅供参考)Section 3场景:课程讨论题型:8 单选+2 多选参考答案:21.Adele does research on Britublock because B. And the best part is, all the travel expenses would be recoverable from the company, plus, they get paid a lot for doing all that. Honestly, I couldnt think of a better way to make money. The reason I think I would be qualified for the job is, well firstly,I’m a huge fan of travelling, I just could get a buzz out of it. So you see, making a living on my hobby is the best lifestyle I could dream of. And also, I have a good command of Chinese, and what I wrote is generally appealing to readers. I could pay close attention to details, and I love to share my experiences, good or bad, with others. The purpose of this job is to advertise newly established hotels, eliminate those awful ones with horrible service, so in the end, travellers could be offered more good options. So it’s fair to say, this job is quite meaningful, and that’s why companies are willing to pay a great deal of money to hire people like me to do this kind of job.And most importantly, I’m the kind of person with great work ethic, I mean, I would never take bribes and talk up the hotel to deceive consumers. So my reviews would be objective and reliable.语言点解析:connoisseur = an expert on matters involving the judgment of beauty, quality or skill in art, food or music 例如:The exhibition will be a delight for the collector and connoisseur of silver ornaments.a connoisseur of Italian paintinga wine connoisseurrecoverable = that you can get back after it has been spent or lost 例如:qualified = having passed the exams or completed the training that are necessary in order to do a particular job; having the experience to do a particular job 例如:a qualified accountant/ teacher, etc.to be highly/ suitably/ fully qualifiedShes extremely well qualified for the job.command = your knowledge of something; your ability to do or use something, especially a language 例如:Applicants will be expected to have (a) good command of English.appealing = attractive or interesting 例如:Spending the holidays in Britain wasnt a prospect that I found particularly appealing.Brightly colored packaging made the pens especially appealing to children.ethic = a system of moral principles or rules of behavior 例如:a strongly defined work ethicbribe = a sum of money or something valuable that you give or offer to somebody to persuade them to help you, especially by doing something dishonestIt was alleged that he had taken bribes while in office. She had been offered a $50 000 bribe to drop the charges.talk somebody/something up = to describe somebody/ something in a way that makes them sound better than they really are 例如:They talked up the tourist attractions to encourage more visitors. My friend highly recommended this book to me, he said it was the most gripping story he had ever read in his entire life. So just out of curiosity, I bought the trilogy on Amazon. And I have to say, my friend is totally right about it. No wonder people say it is the most popular science fiction in China. I mean, the whole story is full of imagination, and the best part is, you don’t have to be an expert in science or have any specialist knowledge to understand and appreciate the story.I’m impressed by the author’s way of telling the story, I mean, he grabbed me from the very start, and it was just impossible to put the book down. What he wrote about is not just about science and technology, it’s also about philosophy, humanity, history and psychology. So you see, thisbook has a profound meaning.Like I said, what appeals to me the most is the way he wrote the stories. He came up with quite a few new concepts and assumptions about the universe. So I really admire his wild imagination. And the whole book is about the fight between human beings and other creatures, I mean, aliens, from the outer space, but there’s no description of any battle at all. Interestingly, however, we could still feel the tension and cruelty of the war. It’s fair to say, the writer is truly a genius. It took me a whole week to finish reading the book, but I have to say, it’s totally worth my time. I heard there would be a screen adaptation of the same name released soon. I’m pretty looking forward to it, ‘cause I really hope special effects in the movie could display the vivid imagination in the book. Gripping = exciting or interesting in a way that keeps your attentionTrilogy = a group of three books, films/ movies, etc. that have the same subject or charactersNo wonder = it is not surprising 例如:It is little wonder (that) she was so upset. No wonder youre tired, youve been walking for hours.Grab = to get somebody’s attentionIll see if I can grab the waitress and get the bill. The play grabs the audiences attention from the very start.Glasgows drugs problem has grabbed the headlines tonight (= been published as an important story in the newspapers). Sleeping1. Is it necessary to take a nap every day? It is very necessary for me to take a nap. Because I always feel exhausted if I get some non-stop work the whole day. Usually lying on the sofa for just 5 minutes will reinvigorate me.

Do old people sleep a lot? Why? 为什么?I think they don’t. They sleep really less than young people do, sometimes they only have 5 hours of sleep, which is not that normal for us. The reason why they do so? Well, I guess it’s because their metabolism is quite different from us youngsters.

P3:SLEEPREADING PASSAGE 3You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 27 - 40, which are based on Reading Passage 3 below.SLEEPWHY WE SLEEPAs the field of sleep research is still relatively new, scientists have yet to determine exactly why people sleep. However, they do know that humans must sleep and, in fact, people can survive longer without food than without sleep. And people are not alone in this need. All mammals, reptiles and birds sleep.Scientists have proposed the following theories on why humans require sleep:· Sleep may be a way of recharging the brain. The brain has a chance to shut down and repair neurons and to exercise important neuronal connections that might otherwise deteriorate due to lack of activity.· Sleep gives the brain an opportunity to reorganise data to help find a solution to problems, process newly-learned information and organise and archive memories.· Sleep lowers a person's metabolic rate and energy consumption.· The cardiovascular system also gets a break during sleep. Researchers have found that people with normal or high blood pressure experience a 20 to 30% reduction in blood pressure and 10 to 20% reduction in heart rate.· During sleep, the body has a chance to replace chemicalsand repair muscles, other tissues and aging or dead cells.· In children and teenagers, growth hormones are released during deep sleep. When a person falls asleep and wakes up is largely determined by his or her circadian rhythm, a day-night cycle of about 24 hours. Circadian rhythms greatly influence the timing, amount and quality of sleep. For many small mammals such as rodents, sleep has other particular benefits, as it provides the only real opportunity for physical rest, and confines the animal to the thermal insulation of a nest. In these respects, sleep conserves much energy in such mammals, particularly as sleep can also develop into a torpor, whereby the metabolic rate drops significantly for a few hours during the sleep period. On the other hand, humans can usually rest and relax quite adequately during wakefulness, and there is only a modest further energy saving to be gained by sleeping. We do not enter torpor, and the fall in metabolic rate for a human adult sleeping compared to lying resting but awake is only about 5-10%.A sizeable portion of the workforce are shift workers who work and sleep against their bodies' natural sleep-wake cycle. While a person's circadian rhythm cannot be ignored or reprogrammed, the cycle can be altered by the timing of things such as naps, exercise, bedtime, travel to a different time zone and exposure to light. The more stable and consistent the cycle is, the better the person sleeps. Disruption of circadian rhythms has even been found to cause mania in people with bipolar disorder. The 'seven deadly sins' formulated by the medieval monks included Sloth. The Bible in Proverbs 6:9 includes the line: 'Howlong will you sleep, O sluggard? When will you arise out of your sleep?' But a more nuanced understanding of sloth sees it as a disinclination to labour or work. This isn't the same as the desire for healthy sleep. On the contrary, a person can't do work without rest periods and no one can operate at top performance without adequate sleep. The puritan work ethic can be adhered to and respect still paid to the sleep needs of healthy humans. It is wrong to see sleep as a shameful activity.Usually sleepers pass through five stages: 1, 2, 3, 4 and REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. These stages progress cyclically from 1 through REM then begin again. A complete sleep cycle takes an average of 90 to 110 minutes. The first sleep cycles each night have relatively short REM sleeps and long periods of deep sleep but later in the night, REM periods lengthen and deep sleep time decreases. Stage 1 is light sleep where you drift in and out of sleep and can be awakened easily. In this stage, the eyes move slowly and muscle activity slows. During this stage, many people experience sudden muscle contractions preceded by a sensation of falling. In stage 2, eye movement stops and brain waves become slower with only an occasional burst of rapid brain waves. When a person enters stage 3, extremely slow brain waves called delta waves are interspersed with smaller, faster waves. In stage 4, the brain produces delta waves almost exclusively. Stages 3 and 4 are referred to as deep sleep, and it is very difficult to wake someone from them. In deep sleep, there is no eye movement or muscle activity. This is when some children experience bedwetting, sleepwalking or night terrors. In the REM period, breathing becomes more rapid, irregular and shallow, eyes jerk rapidly and limb muscles are temporarily paralysed. Brain waves during this stage increase to levelsexperienced when a person is awake. Also, heart rate increases, blood pressure rises and the body loses some of the ability to regulate its temperature. This is the time when most dreams occur, and, if awoken during REM sleep, a person can remember their dreams. Most people experience three to five intervals of REM sleep each night. Infants spend almost 50% of their time in REM sleep. Adults spend nearly half of sleep time in stage 2, about 20% in REM and the other 30% is divided between the other three stages. Older adults spend progressively less time in REM sleep. As sleep research is still a relatively young field, scientists did not discover REM sleep until 1953, when new machines were developed to monitor brain activity. Before this discovery it was believed that most brain activity ceased during sleep. Since then, scientists have also disproved the idea that deprivation of REM sleep can lead to insanity and have found that lack of REM sleep can alleviate clinical depression although they do not know why. Recent theories link REM sleep to learning and memory.SECTION 3: QUESTIONS 27-40Questions 27-30Choose the correct letter, A, B, C or D.27Among other functions, sleep serves toAhelp the adult body develop physically.Bpush daily problems from our minds.Caccelerate the learning process significantly.Dre-energise parts of the brain.28'Torpor’ can be described asAa very deep sleep.Ba long state of hibernation.Cthe sleep all non-human mammals experience.Da light sleep.29Unlike small mammals, humansAdon’t sleep to conserve energy.Bdon’t sleep properly.Csave only a small amount of energy by sleeping.Dshow no decrease in their metabolic rate when they sleep.30In stage 3 deep sleepAthe eyes move slowly and there’s littl e muscle activity.Bthere is an alternation of delta waves and small fast waves.Cthere is an occasional burst of rapid brain waves.Dthere are no small fast waves.Questions 31-35Complete the flow-chart below.Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

Describe a person who found a clever solution to a problem,这个题目对考生选择的故事有两个要求:1 解决的是一个问题,所谓的问题一般就是棘手的,带来困难和麻烦的;2 解决方法一定是聪明的,巧妙的,不能是普通的解决方法。

(1)How should I put it? This phrase shows that you are looking for the best expression. It also gives a heads-up that you are about to say something that might be a bit tricky to explain.(这句话让你感觉你是在寻找最恰当的表达方式,同时也提醒对方你接下来要表达的内容是复杂的。

雅思Speaking Part 1 Sleeping

雅思Speaking Part 1 Sleeping

IELTS Speaking Part 1: Sleeping1. How many hours do you sleep each day? It’s kind of hard to say for sure, but I guess on average, I probably get about 7 or 8hours of sleep a day, something like that. Cos I’m normally in bed at about 11 ish,and I usually get up sometime around 7. So yeah, 7 to 8 hours is about thenorm for me.on average-平均11 ish– around 11 (用于表示时间、日期、年龄的词之后)表示“…前后的”,“…左右的” -ish is added to words referring to times, dates, or ages to form words whichindicate that the time or age mentioned is approximate.the norm-通例;常规If you say that a situation is the norm, you mean that it isusual and expected2. Is it necessary to take a nap every day?No, I wouldn’t say it is. And also I think it kind of depends on the person, becausesome people do feel the need to have a nap to give them energy for the rest of theday, but for others, like myself, we can quite easily get through the day withouttaking a nap.the rest of the day–剩余的一天;一天的剩余时光get through the day–度过一天3. Do old people sleep a lot? It’s pretty hard to generalize, but on the whole, I wouldn’t really say so, no,because I mean, if I think about the elderly people I know, they’renormally up pretty early each day. And I mean, they might take a nap at somestage during the day, but I wouldn’t consider that to be sleeping a lot! It’s pretty hard to generalize, but on the whole–很难概括,但总的来说,Up- here, it’s an adjective, which means being out of bedat some stage during the day– at some time in the dayThey might go to bed early than most, but they’re also up earlier than most.

1. Do you like rainy days? No, not that much to be honest with you, because I mean, when it rains, you can’t really do anything outside, unless you don’t mind getting wet of course! And also for me, I find it a bit of a hassle carrying an umbrella around with me everywhere.I find it a bit of a hassle = I find it an effort = 我觉得有点麻烦2. What do you do on rainy days?Well it kind of depends really, because there are some things I have to do regardless of whether it’s raining or not, you know, like going to lectures and stuff. But when I’m free, I tend to just chill out at home if it’s raining. So for example, I might read a book or watch TV, and I’ll only leave the flat if I absolutely have to!Chill out = relax (used in spoken English)3. Do you think rain is good?Yeah, for sure. I mean, for one thing, it helps get rid of all the dust inthe air. And secondly, it’s good for the natural environment. You know, it helps all the plants and vegetation stay alive. So although I don’t particularly like the rain, I understand the need for it!Vegetation -植物4. Does rain ever affect transportation in your hometown?Yeah, most definitely, because you know, whenever it rains, the traffic always seems to get a lot more congested. I’m not exactly sure why, but I guess it’s probably because cars have to drive slower in the rain. 5. Is there any part of China where it doesnt rain much?Yeah, I’d say there are quite a few areas of the country where it doesn’t rain a lot, the most obvious place being the Gobi Desert, which I guess never gets any rain, what with being a desert and all! And also I’d say the north of China, in general, doesn’t really get all that much rain, at least compared with the south, so a lot of that part of the country is quite dry and arid. The Gobi Desert戈壁What with it being a desert and all – 究竟是个沙漠! To tell you the truth, I have no clue about this. I do not give a hoot about geography and the amount of rain in my country. I think the most rainfall is in the North where there is an intricate system ofrivers.6. What effects can a shortage of rain have on people’s lives?Well thinking about it, I suppose one of the biggest affects it can have is on our food supply, because things like fruit and vegetables need water to grow, and rain provides the water. So you know I think it’s pretty safe to say that a shortage of rain is likely to result in a decrease in our overall food supply.I think it’s pretty safe to say = 我觉得可以说……Other effects:It could result in a lack of drinking waterIt could result in the government controlling how much water we can use. For example, I think I’m right in saying that in some parts of Australia, people can only spend a certain amount of time each day having a shower!7. Can you remember a time when it rained particularly heavily in your hometown?Yeah I can. About a year or so ago, we had, like, several days of torrential rain, almost non-stop, and so the whole of my neighbourhood got flooded. You know, the water was like, up to my knees, and so traffic came to a complete standstill. So yeah, that was probably the worst time I can remember.About a year or so ago – 一年前左右Like -(表示思索下面的话或用作口头禅) Some people say like when they are thinking about what to say next or because it has becometheir habit to say it. Torrential rain – 暴雨The traffic came to a (complete) standstill 交通瘫痪了So yeah – 所以嗯,所以说呢,(总结的时候可以用这话开头)8. Do you think the seasons have changed in recent years, compared to the past?Yeah I’d say they have. You know, I think it’s fair to say the summer has got quite a lot hotter, because I mean, it seems to be hitting 40 degrees every year now, and that definitely wasn’t the case in the past. And also the winter isn’t as cold as it used to be, because you know, if I think back to when I was a child, it used to snow quite a lot during the winter, but now it hardly snows at all.I think it’s fair to say – 我觉得可以说It hardly … at all – 几乎不……that definitely wasn’t the case in the past – 以前绝不是这样的9. Does it rain a lot in your hometown?Well, it depends on the season. In winter and spring, there is a dearth of rain associated with the arid weather. In contrast, it is usually raining cats and dogs in summer and august, causing loads of troubles for people travelling on the road.rainy days相关高分词汇refreshing 新奇的e.g.We find it refreshing to hang out after a rainy day.
