英国人把排队叫做“queue up”,美国人把排队叫做“wait in line”,只有纽约人不同,他们把排队叫做“wait on line”。

7. Since he was not clear with this matter, he declined to express his ideas.8. The sight of him reminds me of his father.9. The misunderstanding was caused by their quarrel.10. The unpleasant noise must be immediately put an end to.II.Suggested answer:到了成人阶段,传统观点认为女人感情过于脆弱,不适合权利太大或需要承担责任的职位。

Unit 1Never Give In, Never, Never, NeverWinston ChurchillAlmost a year has passed since I came down here at your Head Master's kind invitation in order to cheer myself and cheer the hearts of a few of my friends by singing some of our own songs. The ten months that have passed have seen very terrible catastrophic events in the world—ups and downs, misfortunes—but can anyone sitting here this afternoon, this October afternoon, not feel deeply thankful for what has happened in the time that has passed and for the very great improvement in the position of our country and of our home? Why, when I was here last time we were quite alone, desperately alone, and we had been so for five or six months. We were poorly armed. We are not so poorly armed today; but then we were very poorly armed. We had the unmeasured menace of the enemy and their air attack still beating upon us, and you yourselves had had experience of this attack; and I expect you are beginning to feel impatient that there has been this long lull with nothing particular turning up!But we must learn to be equally good at what is short and sharp and what is long and tough. It is generally said that the British are often better at the last. They do not expect to move from crisis to crisis; they do not always expect that each day will bring up some noble chance of war; but when they very slowly make up their minds that the thing has to be done and the job put through and finished, then, even if it takes months—if it takes years—they do it.Another lesson I think we may take, just throwing our minds back to our meeting here ten months ago and now, is that appearances are often very deceptive, and as Kipling well says, we must "... meet with Triumph and Disaster. And treat those two impostors just the same."You cannot tell from appearances how things will go. Sometimes imagination makes things out far worse than they are; yet without imagination not much can be done. Those people who are imaginative see many more dangers than perhaps exist; certainly many more will happen; but then they must also pray to be given that extra courage to carry this far-reaching imagination. But for everyone, surely, what we have gone through in this period—I am addressing myself to the school—surely from this period of ten months this is the lesson: never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in except to convictions of honour and goodsense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy. We stood all alone a year ago, and to many countries it seemed that our account was closed, we were finished. All this tradition of ours, our songs, our school history, this part of the history of this country, were gone and finished and liquidated.Very different is the mood today. Britain, other nations thought, had drawn a sponge across her slate. But instead our country stood in the gap. There was no flinching and no thought of giving in; and by what seemed almost a miracle to those outside these islands, though we ourselves never doubted it, we now find ourselves in a position where I say that we can be sure that we have only to persevere to conquer. You sang here a verse of a school song: you sang that extra verse written in my honour, which I was very greatly complimented by and which you have repeated today. But there is one word in it I want to alter—I wanted to do so last year, but I did not venture to. It is the line: "Not less we praise in darker days."I have obtained the Head Master's permission to alter darker to sterner. "Not less we praise in sterner days."Do not let us speak of darker days: let us speak rather of sterner days. These are not dark days; these are great days—the greatest days our country has ever lived; and we must all thank God that we have been allowed, each of us according to our stations, to play a part in making these days memorable in the history of our race.

Unit 1 Lights, camera, action! ReadingBehind the scenes 幕后Hello, everyone!Let me start by asking you a question:what's the first thing you notice about a film? The acting? The music?Maybe the amazing sets?Whatever your answer is,there's always a lot more to it than first meets the eye.Actually, the film you see on the screen is the product of a huge amount of hard work, most of which takes place behind the scenes.Today,I'll give you a brief introduction to some aspects of film-making you might not be familiar with.

To begin with,l'd like to draw your attention to an important factor of a film-sound affects. These are often added after a scene hasbeen shot and might not be made in the way you would expect. For example,in Jurassic park, the sounds of different animals, including a baby elephant and a tiger, were mixed by a computer to make a dinosaur roar. The sound of the doors opening in the Star Trek films was made simply by pulling a sheet of paper out of an envelope.

Unit One1.

Making opening exchanges is the convention of the business call in many countries. But observers find it not welcomed in the States. Americans seldom conduct ritual interaction in business, they don’t have leisurely business chat in relaxed surroundings, neither do they play golf to develop a sense of trust. They generally probe and assess their visitors professionally rather than socially. This is because Americans have an acute sense of shortness of lifetime, they know very well time can’t be replaced. Consequently, they carefully budget time and want every minute to count.2.

Time is always ticking in Americans’ inner ear. In the shop, the y may restlessly elbow others to complete their shopping quickly; on the road, they may abruptly speed up, trying to go ahead of others; they also produce many time-saving devices, such as faxes, emails, and satellite communication equipment. Americans like electronic communication, even when the matter at hand is of great significance, they seldom choose to communicate in person. In the U.S., it’s taken as a sign of skillfulness or being competent to solvea problem, or fulfill a job successfully, with speed.3.

People will undergo culture shock when studying abroad. At honeymoon stage, they discover fascinating things and desirable fun and are full of excitement. In spite of this, their view will soon clash with the new culture due to their different norms, values and traditions, they’re at “hostility” stage. When people feel distressed, they’d devise some defense mechanism to cope with this feeling. Remember not to isolate yourself and avoid communicating with the local people. Evidently, if he doesn’t adjust to the new culture,he’ll be rejected by it. When his recognition of culture shock begins, he’s at “recovery” stage, developing comprehension of everything new, which is favorable and helpful to him. The symptom of hostility disappears, he begins to accept the distinctions of cultures and enters “adjustment” stage.Unit Three1.

During our three years together Peter and I developed mutual trust and respect . We showed tolerance and compromise to each other’s characters. But we met with my mother’s resistance when we decided to get married. She had prejudice to Peter’s family background. She said I was filled with illusions and overlooked our differences. She counseled me to cancel our wedding plans. I asked mother to try to under-stand him so that she may find him a charming guy. In the subsequent days, mother came to find that all the indications confirmed what I said. She said yes to our plans finally.2.

”My boy friend has a splash of spots across his face. When he first visited my family, my mother surveyed him from head to toe. I tried to anticipate what criticisms she would have. My mother began to criticize my innocent boyfriend in her hometown dialect. I was compelled to defend on his behalf. During dinner, when my mother took her chopsticks, it’s our cue to eat and praise her cooking. But my boyfriend was not diplomatic as to criticize my mother’s cooking and poured some soy sauce on the dish. He had failed miserably in her eyes. On the way home, my boyfriend said modestly,” Well, I think we hit it off A-OK.”Unit Four1.

Few people today would volunteer to help those in trouble and bring warmth to them. We feel the close connection with them; their awkward trouble fills a special place in our life; we know well how bad they would feel when we decline their request, and that we would feel identically bad as if our hearts would be compressed into a small cement ball. However, we insist forbidding ourselves from showing our kindness to them, as long as we uncontrollably imagine that what if they are professional beggars to cheat. Now the question is when we are offering our helping hand, shall we focus our eyesight on the feeling of ourselves or on that of those we help?2.
