She said that she wanted to know what he thought of the boy‟s character. He studied the handwriting carefully for a few minutes. Then he looked at the woman strangely. The woman told him that the boy was not in her family and that he did not have to worry.“Good!” said the writer, “Then I can tell you.” He went on to say that he thought the boy was stupid and lazy. Watch a good teacher, and you will see that he does not move motionless before his class; he stands the whole time he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanation, and his face to express his feeling. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality and musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about. The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn't mean he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher's word and the actor's. The actor has to speak words which has been learnt by heart, he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand. What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on the stage.A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don't understand something, they say so. The teacher therefore has to suit his act to the needs of his audience, which is his class. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along.I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a stage play because their brains wouldn't keep discipline: they could not keep strictly to what another had written.纠错收藏1).The main difference between students in class and theatre audience is that ( ).A、students can move around in the classroomB、students must keep silent while theatre audienceC、no memory work is needed for the studentsD、the students must take part in their teachers' plays2).In what way is a teacher''s work different from an actor''s? ( )A、The teacher must learn everything by heart.B、He knows how to control his voice better than an actor.C、he has to deal with unexpected situations.D、He has to use more facial expressions.3).A good teacher ______.A、knows how to hold the interest of his studentsB、must have a good voiceC、knows how to act on the stageD、stands or sits motionless while teaching2.How can a single postage stamp be worth $16 800? Any mistake made in the printing of a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on one inexpensive postage stamp has made the stamp worth a million and a half times its original value. The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in the British colony Mauritius , a small island in the Indian Ocean. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent to a London printer – Mauritius was to become the fourth country in the world to issue stamps. Before the order was filled and delivered, a ball was planned at Mauritius ’ Government House, and stamps were needed to send out the invitations. A local printer was instructed to copy the design for the stamps. He accidentally marked the words " Post Office" instead of " Post Paid" on the several hundred stamps that he printed.Today there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left—fourteen One-Penny Orange-Reds and twelve Two-Penny Blues. Because of the Two-Penny Blue's rareness and age, collectors have paid as much as $ 16800 for it.纠错收藏1).The mistake in the locally printed postage stamps was in the ____.A、priceB、wordingC、colorD、spelling of postage2).A postage stamp’s value to collectors is raised if _____.A、there are few others like itB、there are no errors on the stampsC、a mistake is made in the printingD、both A and C3).The best title for this section is ____.A、The “Post Paid” ErrorB、The Twopenny BlueC、A London Printer’s ErrorD、How Mauritius Became Famous4).Which one is implied but not stated?A、All correctly printed stamps are worthless.B、Mauritians needed the stamps to send out invitations to a ball.C、The printer was punished for his mistake.D、Collectors are constantly looking for stamps with mistakes.5).$16 800 is the collector’s value of ____.A、the One Penny Orange – RedB、a correctly printed 1847 stampC、the Twopenny BlueD、both A and C3.I was very disappointed not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday. The advertisement in the paper said that you could buy tickets at the theatre box in Richland Hills any day between 10:00 and 4:00. Since I work from 9:00 to 5:30, the only time I could go to the theatre was during my 45-minute lunch break. Unfortunately, the theatre is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky you can make the round trip in 45 minutes. Last Monday, I stood at the bus stop for fifteen minutes waiting for the bus. By the time I saw one come around the comer, there was not enough time left to make the trip. So I gave up and went back to the office. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again the next day. On Thursday, my luck changed. I got on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in exactly twenty minutes. When I got there, however, I found a long line of people at the box office. I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for over an hour. Realizing I would not have enough time to wait in line, I caught the next bus and headed back across the town. By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi, it was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it to hear the concert. The trip by taxi only took 10 minutes, but it felt like an hour to me. When I got to the theatre, I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, however, I quickly discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets.纠错收藏1).He tried to go to the theatre every day but managed to get there only ( ).A、onceB、twiceC、three timesD、four times2).The man learned ( ) that there would be a concert last Friday.A、from his friendsB、form one of his workmatesC、over the radioD、from the newspaper3).The story is mainly about ( ).A、a good concertB、the bad bus service in this cityC、the difficulty of getting a ticket for a concert in a cityD、someone''s disappointment at missing a concertThe underlined word "relieved" may best be replaced by "( )".A、surprisedB、pleaseC、puzzledD、sorry5).One day the man took ( ) to get to the theatre by bus.A、forty-five minutesB、fifteen minutesC、just twenty minutesD、over an hour4.How can English teachers accelerate the language learning of their students? One way is to teach students how to learn more effectively and efficiently. Learning strategies are "Procedures or techniques that learners can use to facilitate a learning task." Instructing students of English in learning strategies can help them become better learners. In addition, skill in using learning strategies assists students in becoming independent, confident learners. Finally, students become more motivated as they begin to understand the relationship between their use of strategies and success in learning English. Students need to develop an awareness of the learning process and strategies that lead to success. Advertising can be tho ught of “as the means of making known in order to buy or sell goods or services”. Advertising aims to increase people’s awareness and arouse interest. It tries to inform and to persuade. The media are all used to spread the message, and the press offers a fairly cheap method. Magazines are used to reach special sections of the market. The cinema and commercial radio are useful for local markets. Television, although more expensive, can be very effective. Posters are fairly cheap and more permanent in their power of attraction. Other ways of increasing consumer interest are through exhibitions and trade fairs as well as direct mail advertising. We might ask whether the cost of advertising is paid for by the manufacturer or by the consumer. Since advertising forms part of the cost of production, which has to be covered by the selling price, it is clear that it is the customer who pays for advertising. However, if large scale advertising leads to increased demand, production costs are reduced, and the customer pays less.It is difficult to measure exactly the influence of advertising on sales. When the market is growing, advertising helps to increase demand. When the market is shrinking, advertising may prevent a bigger fall in scales than would occur without its support. What is clear is that businesses would not pay large sums for advertising if they were not convinced of its value to them.(1).
