And in today’s program, I’d like to share with you a special kind of English culture — the football. A lot of people in England are crazy about football. During the football season whenever there is a big match, all the flags for local football teams, such as Liverpool and Newcastle, are hung outside every window, or even spread proudly on T-shirts or scarves. There is an atmosphere of excitement in the air. Groups of young men crowd into dark, packed pubsstaring at television screens. Of course they are covered head to toe in the colors of their team. They shout and scream in sadness when their team loses a goal, or with joy when there is a moment of success. You do not have to be a fan of football to get caught up in the excitement. As far as victories are concerned, England had its big moment in 1966 in Wembley Stadium. The World Cup victory is in the hearts and minds of all football fans. Now, whenever England is playing a big match, red and white covers every inch of every pub, a symbol of hope —the English flag. While football has never been something I am particularly interested in, for years, I’ve had to pretend excitement and pick a team to support. You cannot say you don’t like or do not follow football in England, as often this would lead to a long dialogue in which someone would begin telling you why you should support their team.

1My First Trip to the Big CityHi there! My name is Emma and I'm 10 years old. I live in a small town called Oakville with my mom, dad, and little brother Jack who's 7. Last summer, our whole family took a big trip to New York City and it was the most exciting adventure ever!We had never been to a huge city like that before. The drive there took forever - we were in the car for over 5 hours! But it was worth it when we finally saw the skyline with all the massive skyscrapers. "Wow, look at how tall those buildings are!" Jack and I shouted from the backseat. Our hotel was pretty neat too. Instead of a little house, it was a giant building with rooms stacked on top of each other up to the 20th floor! The room we stayed in felt pretty small, but mom said that's just how it is in a crowded place like New York. My favorite part was the huge swimming pool on the rooftop with an amazing view of the city skyline. On our first day, we visited Times Square. It was absolutely jam-packed with people, bright lights, giant TV screens, and advertisements everywhere you looked. So many people were trying to sell tickets for shows and tours. It was a bit overwhelming at first with all the noise and crowds, but also super cool and exciting! We spent the morning watching all the crazy street performers - mimes, musicians, artists, you name it. At one point, a funny guy dressed as Elmo from Sesame Street tried to charge my dad 10 just for a picture! We politely declined. For lunch, we had gigantic slices of authentic New York-style pizza. The cheese and sauce was so perfectly gooey and delicious. Not at all like the pizza we get back home. Afterwards, we walked around taking pictures of all the iconic buildings and bright lights. That evening, we saw an incredible magic show on Broadway that kept us amazed the entire time. The next day, we visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. It was amazing seeing the huge statue up close after learning all about it in school. Did you know it was actually built in France and shipped over from there in crates? Wild!On Ellis Island, we got to explore the museum and learn about all the immigrants who came through there when arrivingto America for the first time. It must have been scary yet exciting for those people too. Just like me visiting a gigantic city for the first time!Another day, we went to the Top of the Rock observation deck at Rockefeller Center. You could see the entire city from up there - the Empire State Building, Central Park, the Hudson River, and endless skyscrapers and avenues in every direction. That night, we saw a major league baseball game between the Yankees and Red Sox at Yankee Stadium which was crazy loud and fun.We spent an afternoon at the Metropolitan Museum of Art too. I'll be honest, I wasn't super thrilled about going to an art museum at first. But once we got inside, it was absolutelymind-blowing! There were massive ancient sculptures, beautiful paintings, Egyptian mummies, and so much other incredible stuff. Who knew art could be so interesting? On our very last day, mom and dad let Jack and I choose what we wanted to do. I picked going up to the observation deck at the top of the Empire State Building, because duh, how could you not? The climb up all those stairs and elevator rides made my legs feel like jelly, but oh man, was the view worth it. You could see all the way to the Statue of Liberty from up there! For Jack's pick, we visited the incredible dinosaur fossils and life-sized models at the Museum of Natural History. He was absolutely obsessed with all the T-Rexes, Triceratops, and other prehistoric creatures. Our dad thought it was pretty cool too! Before we knew it, our amazing week in New York City was over. On the drive home, I couldn't stop raving to my parents about how awesome the trip was and how I couldn't wait to go back someday. Visiting a place like that made me realize there's a huge world to explore out there beyond our little town. I'm glad I got to experience the big city, but I've got to admit, I was happy to be back home too. There's no place like home! But I'll never forget the incredible sights, sounds, and adventures we had in New York. What an unforgettable first trip to the big city!篇2The Best Summer Vacation Ever!Hi there! My name is Emma and I just had the most amazing summer vacation. I'm 10 years old and I just started 5th grade. During summer break, my family went on an incredible trip to Hawaii and it was like something out of a dream! We started our vacation by flying from Chicago to Honolulu.I had never been on a plane before, so I was really excited butalso a little nervous. The flight was pretty long - almost 9 hours! But it went by quickly because I watched movies, played games on my tablet, and even slept a little bit. When we landed in Hawaii, it was absolutely beautiful outside. The sky was bright blue, the sun was shining, and it was pretty warm - around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Our hotel was right on the beach in Waikiki and it was gorgeous! From our room, we had an amazing view of the ocean.I could watch the big waves crashing on the shore all day long. The very first day, we went swimming in the hotel's huge pool that had a waterslide, a lazy river, and a swim-up bar for the grownups. The water was perfectly refreshing after the long flight. That evening, we walked along the beach and saw the most incredible sunset. The sky turned bright orange and pink篇3The Day My Dog Ran AwayHi there! My name is Mia and I'm 10 years old. I love animals, especially dogs. Last summer, something really crazy happened with my dog Buddy that I'll never forget! It was a hot July morning and I was playing outside in the backyard. Buddy was running around chasing squirrels like he always does. He's a really energetic golden retriever. Anyway, I went inside for a few minutes to get a snack. When I came back out, Buddy was gone! I called and called for him, but he didn't come.I got really worried and told my mom right away. She said Buddy must have gotten out of the backyard somehow and ran off. We grabbed some treat bags and started searching the neighborhood for him. We asked all the neighbors if they had seen Buddy, describing what he looks like - golden fur, floppy ears, a red collar. A few people said they had spotted a dog fitting that description running down the street earlier. After a couple of hours, we still couldn't find Buddy anywhere. We made some "Lost Dog" posters with his picture and our phone number and posted them all aroun篇4Hello friends! My name is Emily and I'm going to tell you all about the English listening passages from the big national test I took in January 2024. I was pretty nervous, but I studied really hard and I think I did a great job!The first passage was about a family going on vacation. It started with a mom talking to her kids, Timmy and Sarah, about where they wanted to go for their summer trip. Timmy really wanted to go to the beach because he loves swimming in the ocean and building sandcastles. But Sarah wanted to go camping in the mountains because she's really into hiking and she likes seeing all the trees and animals.Their mom said that this year, they were going to go someplace totally new and different - a dude ranch in Montana! At first, Timmy and Sarah didn't know what a dude ranch was. Their mom explained that it's like a big farm where you can go horseback riding, learn how to lasso cattle, go on hayrides, and see cowboys doing ranch work. She said there would be plenty of chances to swim too since the ranch had a big lake.Timmy and Sarah were excited to try something new. Timmy couldn't wait to ride a horse for the first time, and Sarah was looking forward to seeing all the wildlife. Their mom reminded them to start packing right away since they were leaving in just a couple weeks! The second passage was about a boy named Jake and his friend Ava. They were walking home from school one day and saw a stray dog on the side of the road. The dog looked reallyskinny and scared. Jake wanted to take it home and keep it, but Ava said they should take it to an animal shelter instead since it might already have an owner looking for it.When they got closer, the dog started wagging its tail. Ava gave it a granola bar from her backpack and it gobbled it right up. Jake used his sweater to gently pick up the dog since it seemed friendly. They decided to take it to the animal shelter a few blocks away to have it checked for a microchip and give it food, water and a warm place to stay.At the shelter, they met a nice worker named Mrs. Thompson. She scanned the dog and said it didn't have a microchip, meaning it was a stray with no owner. She thanked Jake and Ava for bringing it in and said she would put up signs around the neighborhood in case someone was missing the pup. If not, the shelter would try to find it a loving new home. Jake and Ava waved goodbye, proud they had helped out.The last passage was about a class visiting a science museum. When they arrived, the guide first took them to see the dinosaur exhibit. There were huge skeletons and fossils of creatures like the T-Rex, Triceratops, and Brontosaurus. The guide explained how dinosaurs lived millions of years ago and eventually went extinct after an asteroid hit the Earth.Next, they went to the space area where they got to see real rockets and spacesuits that astronauts have worn. The guide taught them about famous astronauts like Neil Armstrong who was the first person to walk on the moon. They even got to experience a simulation of what it feels like to walk in low gravity like on the moon! The last exhibit they saw was about the human body. There were detailed models showing all the organs and systems inside us. The tour guide talked about the importance of eating healthy foods and exercising to keep our bodies functioning well. She had the students do an activity where they had to put organs like the heart, lungs and kidneys in the right spots. After the tour, the class went to the museum gift shop before heading back to school. Some kids boughtglow-in-the-dark stars, others got K'Nex building toys, and a few kids got stuffed animals of their favorite dinosaurs. It had been an awesome field trip filled with so much learning and fun!Well, that's all the listening passages I can remember from the big test. There was so much interesting information packed into those few short recordings. I felt like I traveled to a dude ranch, took a stray pup to a shelter, and went on the coolest fieldtrip ever - all through just listening carefully! I really hope I get a good score. Finger crossed! Thanks for reading, friends!篇5The English Listening Test - So Much Fun!Hi everyone! My name is Lily and I'm in 5th grade. I just took the English listening part of the big National Unified Exam last month and I'm really excited to tell you all about it!First of all, let me say that I was pretty nervous going into the exam. My teacher Mrs. Roberts had been drilling us for weeks on listening strategies and example questions. She said the listening would be super important for getting into the best middle school next year. I practiced all the time - in the car, at home, you name it! My poor parents probably got sick of hearing those practice audios over and over. But when test day came, I tried my best not to be scared. I got a good night's sleep, ate a healthy breakfast, and my dad gave me a big hug before dropping me off at the test site. Once I was in the room, I did some deep breaths to stay calm like Mrs. Roberts taught us.Ok, let's get to the good stuff - the actual listening test! It started off pretty easy with some basic conversations between two people. Like a guy asking for directions and a woman responding with how to get somewhere. Or someone ordering food at a restaurant. Super simple vocabulary and questions like "What did he order to eat?" I blazed through those no problem. Then it got a little trickier with longer conversations between three or four people. There was one about some kids planning a birthday party for their friend. Another was coworkers discussing how to update their company website. For those, I really had to pay close attention to who was saying what and pick up on context clues. But honestly, my favorite part was the longer lectures and stories. We had a funny story about a boy who accidently shrank his family and kept them in his backpack for a day. That one was entertaining but also tested if I understood the sequence of events. There was a talk from a scientist about renewable energy sources that was pretty interesting too.For the stories and lectures, it was key to really listen for the main ideas and take good notes on the details. Mrs. Roberts drilled that into our heads - write down those content and supporting details! I tried to jot down important names, numbers, vocab words, etc. as I was listening so I didn't get too lost in the details. There were all different question types mixed in too. Some were multiple choice, fill in the blanks, put events in order, and even a few short answer responses. I thought the variety made it more engaging than just boring multiple choice the whole time.Overall, despite being a little nervous at first, I ended up having a great time on the listening section! The audios and questions were interesting and challenging in a fun way. It felt really rewarding to use all the listening skills I'd practiced. My favorite part might have been the quiet individual listening time about halfway through. We all put on headphones and listened to audio clips and questions on our own. I loved using my purple kitty cat headphones and feeling like I was in my own quiet world, totally focused and in the zone. There were a couple questions towards the end that stumped me for sure. But I'm proud of how hard I worked and how well I implemented my listening strategies like taking notes, keyword identification, and making predictions.I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a good score! Having strong English listening skills will be so valuable. It will help meunderstand my teachers, make friends, watch movies, you name it. I'm feeling confident and prepared for middle school.Big shoutout to my amazing teacher Mrs. Roberts and my parents for supporting me every step of the way. I'm excited to get my results back in a couple months. Wish me luck! I've got to run for now, but let me know if you have any other questions about my experience. Listen on!篇6My Big English Listening TestHey there! My name is Emma and I'm a 5th grader. I just took the big national English listening test and I'm gonna tell you all about it!It was on a Saturday morning in January when my mom woke me up at like 6am. I was still so tired because I had stayed up late the night before watching movies with my little brother Timmy. But my mom said I had to get up because the test was really important. She made me a big breakfast with eggs, toast, and orange juice to help wake me up.After breakfast, we drove to my elementary school. There were sooo many kids there from all over the city! We had to goto the auditorium and find our assigned seat numbers. I was in the third row right in the middle. The auditorium was huuuuge and there were kids filling up every single seat. I saw some of my friends from class and we waved to each other.Once everyone was seated, the test administrators came out onto the stage. They reminded us that this was the national English listening examination for 5th graders across the whole country. They said we would hear different recordings and have to answer multiple choice questions about them on our answer sheet. No cheating allowed! Then they started playing the audio recordings over the auditorium speakers. The first one was a conversation between two kids talking about their favorite TV show. It was kind of hard for me to hear at first because the speakers didn't sound that great. But after a little bit I got used to it.The conversation questions asked stuff like "What show were they talking about?" and "Which character did Juan say was his favorite?" I tried my best to bubble in the right answers, but some of them were pretty tricky. Whenever I didn't know an answer, I just had to guess. After that conversation one, there were more recordings of people talking about different topics. One was about a girljoining her school's basketball team. Another one was an advertisement for a new video game coming out soon. My personal favorite was the story about a boy who got lost at the airport and had to use his English skills to ask for help finding his mom. That one was really exciting! We also had to listen to some phone calls, announcements over a loudspeaker, and even recordings with background noise to make it more realistic. The audio clips kept coming one after another with just a little break in between to bubble in our answers. My hand kinda started to cramp up from bubbling so much!By the time we got to the last few recordings, my brain felt like mush. There was one audio clip that was extremely hard to understand because the people were talking with accents. I just had to make my best guesses on those ones. Phew! Finally, after like 2 hours of nonstop listening, the test was over. My ears were ringing but I felt proud that I had worked really hard. We all turned in our answer sheets and filed out of the auditorium. My mom was waiting outside and gave me a big hug when she saw me. She could tell I was worn out from concentrating sohard. We went out for pizza to celebrate being done with the big test!A few weeks later, I got my score report in the mail. I ended up getting 82 out of 100 questions right, which was better than I expected! The national average score was a 75, so I was above average. Woohoo!Even though the test was really long and tough, I'm glad I had to take it. It helped get me ready for bigger tests in middle school and high school. And now anytime I watch a movie or show in English, I feel like my listening comprehension is better than before from all that practice.I just hope next year's 6th grade English listening test isn't too much harder... Wish me luck! Let me know if you have any other questions about my big exam day.。
