She was anxious to take a picture of an impressive bunch of flowers that sat not so far away, but first she had to get through a crowd of others pushing their way to do the same. The cause of this was Bouquets to Art, one of the most popular events at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. In recent years, the de Young received more than a thousand complaints from people who felt that cell phones had spoiled their experience of the exhibit. Institutions of fine art around the world face similar problems as the desire to take photographs becomes a huge attraction for museums, as well as something that upsets some of their patrons (资助人). So the de Young responded with a kind of compromise: carving out “photo free” hours during the exhibition’s six-day run.One common complaint about the effect of social media on museum culture is that people seem to be missing out on experiences because they are so busy collecting evidence of them. A study recently published in the journal Psychological Science suggests there is some truth to this. It finds that people, who keep taking photos of an exhibit and posting them on social media rather than simply observing it, have a hard time remembering what they see. But the issue is complex for the professionals running museums. Linda Butler, the de Youn g’s head of marketing and visitor experience, acknowledges that not everyone wants a museum to be “a photo-taking playland”. Yet a lot of people do and she believes that the de Young is in no position to judge one reason for buying a $28 ticket to be more reasonable than another. “If we removed social media and photography,” she says. “We would risk becoming unimportant.”4、What was the woman eager to do according to Paragraph 1?A. To get her phone.B. To escape the crowd.C. To take a photo.D. To push ahead.5、How did the de Young respond to the dilemma?A. By compromising with the government.B. By making the exhibition free of charge.C. By setting periods without photo-taking.D. By extending the free exhibition hours.6、What may the use of social media in museums bring about?A. Museum-owner’s lower profits.B. Exhibits’ damage to appearance.C. Professionals’ lack of tolerance.D. Visitors’ distraction of real focus.7、Which of the following may Linda Butler support?A. Catering to visitors.B. Reducing admission prices.C. Reserving judgement in public.D. Banning social media and photography.Vehicles on our roads are now mostly petrol and diesel (柴油) cars, but their days cannot continue for much longer. A recent university study found that current electric cars could be used for 87 percent of daily car journeys in the US. That figure could rise to 98 percent by 2024.drivers’ concerns about running out of electricity on a journey. While petrol stations are conveniently located across national road systems, the necessary network of electric charging stations is still being developed. That said, charging points are becoming increasingly common throughout the USA.Attitudes towards electric vehicles have changed greatly over the last few years. Not that long ago, electric cars were met with distrust, and their high prices drove customers away. Thanks to improvements in battery capacity, recharging times, performance and price, the current generation of electric cars are starting to persuade picky consumers. As well as development on the road, electric vehicles are taking to the seas and skies. Electric boats are among the oldest methods of electric travel, having enjoyed several decades of popularity from the late 19th to the early 20th century before petrol-powered outboard motors took over. Now, the global drive for renewable energy sources is bringing electric boats back. Steps towards electric air travel are also being made, with Airbus and NASA among the organizations developing and testing battery-powered planes.Electric vehicles do not produce any emissions (排放). If the US could replace 87 percent of its cars with electric vehicles, it would reduce the national demand for petrol by 61 percent. That said, as many countries continue to increase their use of renewable energy sources, electric vehicles will become even cleaner.8、What does the underlined word “hurdle” in Paragraph 2 probably means?A. Aim.B. Problem.C. Result.D. Step.9、Why did many people refuse to buy the electric cars in the past?A. They were dependable.B. They were not widely promoted.C. They were expensive.D. They couldn’t travel at a high speed.10、What is the function of Paragraph 4?A. To introduce the history of electric travel.B. To explain why the world needs more electric cars.C. To show why more people have interest in electric cars.D. To describe different ways electric vehicles can be used.11、Which is the best title for this passage?A. Driving into a Cleaner FutureB. History of Electric CarsC. Problems with Petrol and Diesel CarsD. Best Means of TransportationIn recent years, China has witnessed the growth of luxury (奢侈品) brands. In this market, Chinese consumers are now the largest spenders. It’s clear that a new generation of young, materialistic people is increasingly relying on luxury brands to improve its self-image.I am a fashionist too, at least in spirit —I love to look at clothes and shoes. But I don’t understand why people spend lots of money on designer labels. When a young woman buys a handbag that costs two months of her salary, that’s a scary thing. What’s interesting is that scientists have found that having luxury things doesn’t lead to happiness. Study after study has shown that although we want material things, when we get them we don’t suddenly become “happy” people. In fact, a series of studies by Leaf Van Boven at the University of Colorado, US, has shown that individuals who spend money on travel and similar experiences get more pleasure than those who invest it in material things. That’s because experiences are more easily combined with a person’s identity. If I travel to Yunnan, that adventure affects how I think in the future. My memories become a part of me.Moreover, as Van Boven has observed, young people who pursue happiness through “things” are liked less by their peers. People prefer those who pursue happiness through experiences. It’s natural to want to express yourself through your appearance. So my advice is: create a look that isn’t tied to a designer label. Convey your own message. Take some lessons from the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. He was always in Levis jeans and a black turtleneck. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, routinely appears in hoodies and sneakers. These people, successful people, have style. You don’t have to break the bank to send a message about who you are. Take a trip. Go out into the world. Then come back and confidently create your own signature look.12、What can we infer from the first paragraph?A. The author enjoys buying luxury brands herself.B. The author agrees to overspend money on material things.C. The author is critical of youths tying their looks to designer labels.D. The author finds it natural for fashionists to follow fashion trends.13、Leaf Van Boven’s studies showed that ______.A. people dislike those who love luxuriesB. traveling changes a person’s identity greatlyC. luxuries have a negative effect on people’s happinessD. experiences can bring people more happiness than luxuries14、What is the author’s advice on expressing oneself?A. Be selective about designer labels.B. Create your own personal unique style.C. Choose simple and fashionable styles.D. Try styles like Mark Zuckerberg’s.15、The main purpose of the article is to ______.A. prove how luxury leads to an unpleasant lifeB. tell how to express yourself through appearancesC. report on a series of studies about luxuries and happinessD. persuade readers to invest in experiences instead of luxuries二、七选五16、Here a few famous people may give you some helpful tips on how to choose the right books to read.● Read books from past eras.①_________Otherwise, you’d be “completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of your times,” just as Albert Einstein put it. “Somebody who reads only newspapers and books of contemporary authors looks to me like an extremely near-sighted person who dislikes eyeglasses,” he said.●②_________Reading too wide a variety in too short a time would keep you from forming a lasting impression. Though her skills had earned her the job, she was the youngest person in the team. “Everybody else was pretty much twice my age,” she says. “I exhibited” too much ambition’ in the eyes of my superiors. I heard about comments being made behind my back. There were even a couple of times when my superiors referred to my age right in front of me, saying I was too young: “What does a 23-year-old know about these things?”Leia tried to change her appearance at work. “I changed the way I dressed. I tried to dress older, more ‘ladylike’. I changed my mannerisms and tried to act older,” she says. “It worked, to an extent.” The comments about her age and inexperience lessened, but Leia says she still felt like her growth potential was limited. She left the company soon after. What Leia experienced was ageism, traditionally seen as something only older people face. For instance, older workers might be judged based on assumptions that they won’t fit into a progressive office or learn technology quickly. A US study showed that nearly two-thirds of workers aged 45 and older had seen or experienced age discrimination. But younger workers face age discrimination, too. In fact, new research shows it may actually be the youngest team members who are bearing the brunt of workplace ageism right now, potentially impacting their careers.Leia says removing ageism entirely will ultimately require a fundamental change to corporate culture, which has long tied seniority to skill. “We prize years of experience a littletoo much, and I don’t think years of experience and skill are necessarily correlated,” she says. “Steve Jobs was 21 when he founded Apple. We don’t know how much younger people actually have to contribute. Hopefully, more employers are realizing it.”4.What did Leia’s co-workers mainly talk about behind her back?A.Her appearance.B.Her younger age.C.Her way of behaving.D.Her family background.5.Why did Leia quit her job?A.She disliked dressing more ladylike.B.She received many negative comments.C.She was under much pressure from her work.D.She needed more room for her career growth.6.What can we know about older workers according to the text?A.They may be quick in learning technology.B.They have trouble adapting to a progressive office.C.They experience more ageism than younger workers.D.A small part of them were faced with age discrimination.7.Why does Leia mention Steve Jobs in the last paragraph?A.To share information about Apple Company.B.To tell us Steve Jobs’ major contributions.C.To show that age and experience are not connected.D.To prove that experience matters to young people. As artificial intelligence(AI) systems become more advanced, we can expect them to be used more often in the world of human medicine and healthcare. AI is designed to imitate(模仿)the human brain in decision making and learning, so with the computing power to learn tasks in days or even hours, it is possible to create medical AIs that rapidly outperform doctors in certain tasks.Data plays a hugely important role in helping AI systems learn about human medicine. The site was once an overseas trading center of an ancient Southeast Asian kingdom known as Funan, according to a new study.“Preparing curry involves not only a diverse range of seasoning but also the use of grinding (研磨) tools, considerable time, and human effort,” said study author Dr. Hsiao chun Hung. “Remarkably, even individuals residing outside of India nearly 2,000 years ago expressed a strong desire to enjoy the flavors of curry, as evidenced by their careful preparations.”Hung and a team of researchers analyzed microscopic remains known as starch grains—tiny structures found within plant cells that can be preserved over long periods—that they found on the grinding tools.“Nowadays, preparing curry in Vietnam has become much simpler for most families due to the widespread availability of bagged curry in supermarkets. However, it is interesting to note that the curry recipe used today has not varied significantly from the ancient times,” said study co-author Dr. Khanh Trung Kien Nguyen. Nguyen added that the team planned to recreate the 2,000-year-old curry based on the microscopic remains found at the site.People were likely enjoying curry in India about 4,000 years ago. Some of the components recovered at Oc Eo are similar to those found in Indian curries, while other components are more distinctively Southeast Asian. The new study concluded that curry recipes arrived in Southeast Asia with South Asian traders as contact between the regions increased during the early centuries of the first millennium.8.What is the sandstone slab used to do according to the text?A.Store grains. B.Carve tools. C.Make curry. D.Keep time.9.What did Dr. Hsiao-chun Hung think of preparing curry in the past?A.It was a complex process. B.It differed from one another.C.It demanded little effort. D.It was environment-friendly.10.What can we infer about the ancient curry recipes?A.They restricted regional trade. B.They were mainly consumed in Vietnam. C.They linked various cultures. D.They were first favored by Southeast Asians. 11.What is the text mainly about?A.The unknown stories of a historical site. B.The findings of unearthed stone tools. It has analyzed ocean surface temperatures for the past 150 years. It reveals that by 2019, 57 percent of the ocean’s surface was warming to temperatures rarely seen 100 years ago.Ecologists wanted to learn how often modern extreme heat events occur. They also wanted to see how long they last. Kisei Tanaka was one of those ecologists. He now works for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Honolulu, Hawaii. Tanaka teamed up with Kyle Van Houtan, who works at the Loggerhead Marinelife Center. The two analyzed monthly sea surface temperatures collected from 1870 through 2019. Then they mapped where and when extreme heat events had shown up, decade by decade.By looking at monthly extremes instead of annual averages, the two found that over time, more and more patches (区域) of water were reaching extreme temperatures. Then, in 2014, the entire ocean hit a point of no return, Van Houtan says.Heat waves harm ocean ecosystems. They can lead seabirds to starve... And animals—from fish and whales to turtles—may have to swim long distances in search of comfortable temperatures. In May 2020, NOAA announced that it was updating what climates it now considered “normal”. Therefore advertising, instead of making a product more expensive, makes it cheaper.Advertising is now a scientific business. Once managers would say jokingly, “I know that half of what I spend on advertising is wasted, but I don‟t know which half.” Now, all parts of an advertising program are properly measured and researched. What makes a good advertisement? There have been major changes in advertising in the past sixty years. People read advertisements part ly for information and partly for pleasure. Today‟s advertisements often start with a question, or a puzzle, with the purpose of attracting the reader‟s attention. Of course, most advertisements contain information. But this is usually contained in a text that is interesting and often funny. Humor is very important. Sometimes advertisements tell a story, or the story may be continued over a number of advertisements. However, there is a danger in this. It is possible that the reader or viewer will remember the advertisement but not the name of the product.66. The purpose of advertising is ______.A. to increase products salesB. to make a product much betterC. to spend more moneyD. to reduce the production67. Which of the following can be used in p lace of the underlined phrase “hand in hand”?A. Here and there.B. Again and again.C. As usual.D. At the same time.68. Wasteful(B)Coroline Pond sets off on Thursday on a 4.500-mile journey to visit her husband, Daniel, and her two step-children. Against their will, she and Daniel are forced to live on different continents. The reason is that Caroline is one of hundreds of British wives who are victims of a law which prevents their foreign husbands from joining them in this country. This law makes it almost impossible for a British woman to marry a foreigner---unless she is prepared to live in her husband‟s native country. But the law, which was intended to r educe the number of immigrants coming into the United Kingdom, does not apply to the British male who marries a foreign woman. He has the legal right to bring her to live with him in the country.“In the eyes of the law, women are second-class citizens,” Caroline says, “In this country, we have about as many rights as a dog which belongs to a man.”Caroline, 27, is a demonstrator of physiology(生理学)in the Zoology Department at Oxford University. Daniel is an associate professor of Biology at Michigan University. Before they married eight months ago, she had applied to the Home Office for permission for him to live in Britain. “It is a waste of time,” she says, “The answer is always …never‟.”For the sake of her career, Caroline wishes to stay in her job for at least another 18 months and the couple was hoping to live in the small Victorian house she owns at Oxford. Ideally, while his wife is at the university, Daniel would have liked to come here and write scientific textbooks.“We have both accepted that I should be the breadwinner.” Caroline says, “Daniel has always looked after the children and would continue to do so. I cannot understand why there is this law against women. After all, I pay the same taxes as a man.”For the past few years, Daniel and Caroline have already crossed the Atlantic 20 times between them. “We are lucky because we can afford to pay the fares, but there must be many women who cannot.” She says.70. The “different continents” in the first paragraph refer to ______.A. Europe and AfricaB. Europe and North AmericaC. Britain and the European ContinentsD. Britain and North America71. What does Caroline mean by “this law against women” in the 6th paragraph?A. British women cannot marry foreign husband.B. British women should pay more taxes than men.C. British women cannot live with their foreign husbands in Britain.D. British women do not have equal rights as women in other countries.72. Why does Caroline still say that they are lucky?A. They can meet from time to time at least.B. They can afford to travel between the two countries.C. They will soon live together.D. The Home Office has working on her case.73. The passage was probably originally published ______.A. in a newspaperB. as part of a novelC. as part of a science fictionD. as part of a legal document(C)The days of the hunter are almost over in India. This is partly because there is practically nothing left to kill, and partly because some steps have been taken, mainly by banning tiger-shooting, to protect those animals which still survive. Some people say that Man is naturally a hunter. I disagree with this view. Surely out earliest forefathers, who at forest possessed no weapons, spent their time digging for roots, and were no doubt themselves often hunted by meat-eating animals.I believe the main reason why the modern hunter kills is that he thinks people will admire his courage in overpowering dangerous animals. Of course, there are some who truly believe that the killing is not really the important thing, and that the chief pleasure lies in the joy of the hunt and the beauties of the wild countryside. There are also those for whom hunting in fact offers a chance to prove themselves and risk death by design; these men go out after dangerous animals like tigers, even if they say they only do it to rid the countryside of a threat. I can respect reasons like these, but they are clearly different from the need to strengthen your high opinion of yourself. The greatest big-game hunters expressed in their writings something of these finer motives(动机).One of them wrote.“You must properly respect what you are after and shoot it cleanly and on the animal‟s own territory(领地)。

But one of them, surely, is to see your name in lights above bustling New York streets. A Chinese writer saw just an illumination in July when his name appeared on the big screen in Times Square. For Liu Zhenyun, it was a spectacular and fully-deserved promotion of his latest book, Laughter and Tears: A Novel.Liu, one of the best-selling authors of novels in contemporary China, has penned a number of popular works, including Someone to Talk To, Remembering 1942, and I Did Not Kill My Husband. His works have been translated into more than 28 languages, and Someone to Talk To was awarded the 2011 Mao Dun Literature Prize.“Laughter and Tears: A Novel can be worthily called another ‘high peak’ after Someone to Talk To,” Zhang Xudong, a professor of comparative literature and East Asian studies at New York University, says. The novel is based on the folklore of a legendary figure Hua Erniang, and describes the paintings of the narrator’s uncle, telling of the humor and life of people in Yanjin, Henan province, Liu’s hometown. In the book, everyone from Yanjin is humorous and can tell excellent jokes. Hua Erniang, the spirit of a widow waiting eternally for her husband, as in Yanjin folklore, will come into people’s dreams. In this state she will ask them to tell her a joke. If she thinks the joke is boring, she will instruct them to carry her to a place where she can drink spicy soup. But they die in the effort as she crushes them following her transformation into a mountain. However, if she likes the joke, she will give them a persimmon (柿子). As a result, people from Yanjin tell really good jokes.Corriere della Sera, an Italian newspaper, called Liu “the Kafka of Beijing”. In 2018, Liu was awarded France’s Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. An author at Kirkus Reviews, a book review site in the United States, writes, “Liu has written a masterful tale that will make you laugh even as you despair”. Liu’s tragedies often have a feature of comedy and his comedies are also like tragedies. He tells many jokes and ridiculous stories in his books, and you will laugh when you read them. However, the truth behind the jokes could be cruel and sorrowful.1.Why did Liu Zhenyun’s name appear on the big screen in Times Square?A. Because he enjoys great reputation.B. The flame arrived early on Wednesday, October 20 after being flown from Greece, the birthplace of the Olympics, where it was lit two days earlier. The 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics will run from Feb. 4 to Feb. 20. Games events are scheduled in three zones-downtown Beijing, the capital’s northwest Yanqing district and co-host Zhangjiakou in Hebei province. As an iconic cultural element of the Olympic Games, the torch relay plays a significant role in promoting the host’s international image while spreading the message of peace, solidarity, friendship and health. Due to the pandemic, however, games organizers have cut back the traditional torch relay to a small-scale event. The relay will take place in three host areas and involve about 1,200 torchbearers. The shortened torch relay with reduced crowds will help ensure the health and safety of all participants as well as that of local communities. The relay is scheduled for Feb. 2 to Feb. 4, with the route connecting landmarks, historical sites and major tourism attractions in Beijing and Zhangjiakou. The traditional offline event will make sure that people get to feel the warmth of the flame and get inspired by the Olympic spirit up close. An online version of the torch relay making use of virtual reality (VR) technologies is also planned for social media platforms. Although the length and duration of the torch relay has been reduced, this represents an innovative approach to maximize the benefits of the technology in connecting more people in an interactive way.The designs of the torch, lantern and cauldron (主火炬) echo each other within a consistent concept that strikes a strong impression of dynamism and vitality. The lantern, which will be used for the flame exhibition tour, is based on the Changxin Palace Lamp, a bronze oil lamp from the Western Han Dynasty, while the cauldron features the same red and silver colors and cloud pattern as the torch. I was determined to learn swimming at the age of ten. There was a pool, at the K.P.L.B., offering the opportunity. My mother constantly warned against it, and bore fresh in my mind the details of each drowning in the river. But the K.P.L. B. pool was safe.My fear of water started from childhood. It began when I was four years old and father took me to the beach. There the huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.The K.P.L.B. pool was quiet. I was afraid of going in all alone, so I sat on the side of the pool to wait for others. Then came a big boy. He yelled, “Hi, Skinny! How’d you like to be ducked?” With that he picked me up and threw me into the deep end. I landed in a sitting position, and swallowed water. But I was not frightened out of my wits—when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump, come out of the surface. It seemed a long way down. I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thought was a great spring upwards. Then I opened my eyes and saw nothing but water. I tried to yell but no sound came out. I went down, down, endlessly. When I came to consciousness, I found myself on the bed in the hospital.I never went back to the pool. I avoided water whenever I could. This misadventure stayed with me as the years rolled by. It deprived me of the joy of boating and swimming. Finally, I decided to get an instructor. Piece by piece, I practiced hard and finally he built a swimmer. Several months later, the instruction was finished, but I was not. Sometimes the terror would return. This went on till July. I swam across the Lake Wentworth. Only once did the terror return. When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. I laughed and said, “Well, Mr. Terror, what do you think you can do to me?”I had conquered my fear of water.1. Why was the author frightened of water originally?A.His swimming skill was very poor.B.An experience at the beach affected him.C.He had an unpleasant memory of the pool at the age of four.D.His mother warned him about the danger of being drowned.2. Which of the following is right about the author’s experience in the K.P.L.B. pool?A.The experience made him aware that the pool was safe.B.The big boy eagerly helped him conquer the fear of water.C.When thrown into water, he knew someone would save himD.While he had no skill in swimming, he struggled to go upwards.3. Which of the following can be used to describe the author?A.Diligent and cautious. B.Determined and grateful.C.Dependable and adaptable. D.Humorous and courageous.4. What does the author try to tell us?A.A fall into a pit, a gain in your wit.B.Do one thing at a time, and do well.C.Deed divides beings into lower and higher ones.D.Success always comes from daring to challenge.3. Being highly connected to a strong social network has its benefits. Now a new study is showing the same goes for trees, thanks to their underground neighbors. The study is the first to show that the growth of adult trees is linked to their participation in fungal (真菌) networks living in the forest soil. Though past research has focused on young trees, these findings give new insight into the importance of fungal networks to older trees — which are more environmentally beneficial for functions like capturing carbon.“Large trees make up the main part of the forest, so they drive what the forest is doing,” said researcher Joseph Birch, who led the study. When they live in the forest soil, fungal networks act as a sort of highway, allowing water, nutrients and compounds to flow back and forth among the trees. The network also helps nutrients flow to resource-limited trees like family units that support one another in times of stress.Cores taken from 350 Douglas firs (花旗松) showed that annual tree ring growth was related to the extent of fungal connections a tree had with other trees. They had much higher growth than those that had only a few connections. The research also showed that trees with more connections to many unique fungi had much greater growth than those with only one or two connections. “If you have this network that is helping trees grow faster, that helps capture more carbon year after year. These networks may help trees grow more steadily even as conditions become more stressful, and could even help protect them against death.” said Birch.Birch hopes his findings lead to further studies in different kinds of forests in other geographical areas, because it’s likely that the connections among trees change from year to year. He said, “Knowing whether fungal networks are operating the same way in other tree species could inform how we reforest areas after harvesting them, and inform how we plant trees to preserve these networks.”1. In what way do the new findings differ from the previous ones?A.They reveal the value of fungal networks to adult trees.B.They clarify misunderstandings of fungal networks.C.They demonstrate a new way to capture carbon.D.They confirm the benefits of fungal networks.2. How do fungal networks help trees?A.By acting as the center of family units.B.By maintaining the balance of resources.C.By fighting against diseases.D.By bettering forest soil conditions.3. What does the underlined “those” refer to in Paragraph 3?A.Tree rings.B.Cores from Douglas firs.C.Douglas firs.D.Fungal networks.4. What can be inferred from what Joseph Birch has put?A.The fungal networks support one another in times of stress.B.The fungal networks enable us to know more about reforestation.C.The findings can apply to different kinds of forests in other geographical areas.D.The fungal networks will help trees grow more steadily if conditions become more stressful.4. Albert Einstein’s 1915 masterpiece The Foundation of the General Theory of Relativity is the first and still the best introduction to the subject, but it probably wouldn’t be publishable in a s cientific journal today. Why not? After all, it undoubtedly would pass the tests of correctness and significance. And while it’s believed that the paper was incomprehensible to its first readers, in fact many papers in theoretical physics are much more difficult. As the physicist Richard Feynman wrote, “There was a time when the newspapers said that only 1.2 men understood the theory of relativity, which is not true. After reading the paper, a lot of people understood the theory of relativity in some way or other, certainly more than 1.2.”No, the problem is its style. It starts with a leisurely philosophical discussion of space and time and then continues with an explanation of known mathematics. Those two sections, which would be considered extraneous today, take up half the paper. Worse, there are zero citations of previous scientists’ work, nor are there any graphs. Those features might make a paper not even get past the first editors.A similar process of professionalisation has transformed other parts of the scientific landscape. Requests for research time at major laboratories are more strictly structured. And anything involving work with human objects, or putting instruments in space, involves piles of paperwork. We see it also in the Regeneron Science Talent Search, the Nobel Prize of high school science competitions. In the early decades of its history, the winning projects were usually the sort of clever but naive, amateurish efforts one might expect of talented beginners working on their own. Today, polished work coming out of internships at established laboratories is the norm. These professionalising tendencies are a natural consequence of the explosive growth of modem science. Standardisation and system make it easier to manage the rapid flow of papers, applications and people. But there are serious downsides. A lot of unproductive effort goes into jumping through bureaucratic hoops(繁文缛节).Of course, Einstein would have found his way to meeting modern standards and publishing his results. Its scien tific core wouldn’t have changed, but the paper might not be the same taste to read.1. According to Richard Feynman, which statement about Einstein’s 1915 paper is true?A.It attracted few professionals. B.It turned out to be comprehensible.C.It needed further improvement. D.It was a classic in theoretical physics.2. What does the underlined word “extraneous” in Paragraph 3 mean?A.Unrealistic. B.Imprecise. C.Unattractive. D.Irrelevant.3. According to the author, what is affected as modern science develops?A.The selection of young talents. B.The evaluation of laboratories.C.The principle of scientific research. D.The application of research findings.4. Which would be the best title for this passage?A.How to write quality papers? B.Will science be professionalised?C.Could Einstein get published today? D.How will modern science make advances?5. Supporting OthersWe’re always being told that the secret to happiness lies in helping others. Indeed, it’s natural to want to support those we care about, especially if we are in a position to do so. 1When we offer support, it may not always be wanted. 2 In this case, offering support in the manner of “... if l were you, I would ...” can feel like a scolding rather than support. If our support fee ls conditional, it can feel burdensome.3 When someone is trying to manage illness or a house move, just saying “What would help you today?” can be amazingly supportive. Or, suggest what you can do for them: picking up some shopping, taking the dog for a walk. Even if it’s not needed, just knowing you’ ve been thought of can be supportive in itself.Try to be mindful of offering support that is disabling, rather than enabling. My son, when aged five, wanted to make a cup of tea. I could see how inspiring it was for him to be able to do this. So I filled the kettle and took him through the safety measures. It felt like a huge risk but it worked. His pleasure was immeasurable. The same principle applies when we offer support that increases someone else’s cap acity. 4Sometimes the only support that’s needed is to listen without judgement. 5 This reassures them that someone cares enough to listen while they ground themselves. When times are tough, remember to keep things stable. Waiting until the storm has passed is all it takes.Support often works best when it’s a two-way process. It is good to know how to accept help from others as well as offer support to them.6. When faced with a pandemic, people may become more forgiving. AI made a promise to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving , unconditionly. The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was quoting a Biblical passage about husbands and their wives. Then he went on to say, “Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love.” To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change. And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, “That new yellow sweater looks great on you.” “Oh, Tom, you noticed”, she said, surprised and pleased. Maybe a little puzzled. After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, “Evelyn’s been alone here with the kids all week and now she wants to be alone with me.” We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites. So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director; a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that’s how the whole vacation passed. I made a new promise to keep on remembering to choose love. There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression.“What’s the matter?” I asked her.“Tom,” she said in a voice filled with distress, “ I don’t?”“What do you mean?”“Well…that checkup I had several weeks ago…our doctor…did he tell you something about me? Tom, you’ve been so good to me…am I dying?”It took a moment for it all to be understood. Then I burst out laughing.“No, honey,” I said, wrapping her in my arms. “You’re not dying; I’m just starting to live.”21. From the story we may infer that Tom drove to the beach cottage ______.A. with his familyB. with EvelynC. aloneD. with his children22. During the two weeks on the beach, Tom showed more love to his wife because ______.A. he was determined to be a good husbandB. he had made a lot of money in his Wall Street firmC. she looked lovely in her new clothesD. the doctor said his wife was seriously ill23. The author says, “There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment.” What does “one thing” refer to?A. He praised her sweater, which puzzled her.B. She insisted on visiting a museum, which he hated.C. He knew something about her illness but didn’t tell her.D. He was so good to her that she thought she must be dying.24. By saying “I’m just starting to live,” Tom means that ______.A. he is just beginning to understand the real meaning of lifeB. he is just beginning to enjoy life as a loving husbandC. he lived an unhappy life before and is now starting to changeD. he is beginning to feel regret for what he did to his wife beforeBHere are some traditional German beer games.Beer Boot PassA very, very popular game played in Germany is the beer boot pass ( Bier Boot ), which has gained popularity all over the world. The game is usually played to pin the next round of beer on a person. In this, a full glass of beer is passed around in the group—there are some rules for this—it has to be tipped every time before it is passed and not a drop of beer must be spilled. The second-to-last person who finishes the beer must pay for the next round. The game then becomes all about judgment because either you drink the entire beer or have a sip and pass it on. You never know who the second to last person will be , so the uncertainty and excitement makes the game a favorite.Beer Crate-RunningThis is a traditional game that is extremely popular in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, more popularly referred to as Kastenlauf. The game is similar to running a race, where a route is marked, ranging from anywhere between 5-12 km. Each participant brings a crate of beer ( the size and quantity will be specified ). The first person who successfully finishes the entire crate of beer before getting to the finish line wins.FlunkyballThis outdoor game is played with one team being matched against another, with equal numbers in both. The teams stand on opposite sides of the ground in a line, with their beers lined before them. An empty bottle or a tin can is placed in the center and another object ( used as an aim ) is brought in, something like a tennis ball. The first team ( A ) hits the ball onto the target to tumble(打翻)it. Once the bottle has tumbled, team A will start drinking their beers. Meanwhile, team B must run to the center, place the bottle upright, find the ball, and cross back into the line before yelling‘Stop’ . Team A then stops drinking and team B starts to throw the ball at the bottle and carrying forward the game. The game continues till one team has finished all their beer and they are declared winners .Drinking RelayDivide the group of people into two teams and get them to stand in a line with beerplaced in front of each member . At the blow of the whistle, the first person lifts the glass and starts drinking the beer. After he is done, he has to turn the glass over to show that there is no more beer in the glass. Then , the next person starts drinking and so on. The next in line can only drink when the first person has emptied his glass. The team whose last member empties the glass ahead of others wins.Herman the GermanEven though this game seems simple, it is a lot of fun. It runs on the lines of ‘Who stole the cookie’. A person is cho sen as‘Herman the German’ ( HTG ) and he has to get the game running. The other members sit in a random manner and are given names, better if they are confusing names like China Port No.1, Rum Master Blaster etc. The game starts with HTG saying –“HTG dropped a missile on China Port No.1, sir ”and China Port No. 1 has to reply with –“It wasn’t me, sir.” Then HTG replies –“Who then, sir”and it goes on. The sentence has to end with ‘sir’and if it doesn’t, then the player has to down a beer. Similarly, if at any point the players fumble, they have to do the same. The tension makes the players forget things and there’s a whole lot of beer flowing as a result.25. Which two games have something to do with running ?A. Beer Boot Pass and Beer Crate-RunningB. Flunkyball and Drinking RelayC. Beer Crate-Running and FlunkyballD. Drinking Relay and Herman the German26. The loser will have to buy beers for others in the game __________ .A. Beer Boot PassB. Beer Crate-RunningC. FlunkyballD. Drinking Relay27. A person with a good memory may have an advantage in playing __________ .A. Beer Boot PassB. FlunkyballC. Drinking RelayD. Herman the German28. Which of the following statements is listed as a rule of the games ?A. Every person has to sip the beer when playing Beer Boot Pass.B. The person who replies to HTG with “sir”at the end will be punished.C. The team can start drinking their beers as soon as they throw the ball in Flunkyball.D. The team members have to drink their beers in turn when playing Drinking Relay.CRemoving the sleeve (封套), you will find a book that is entirely white, except for the names of its author and subject in elegant black type on the cover. It is the perfect design for the biography of a man who insisted that even the insides of his products be perfectly constructed, and that his factory walls flash in the whitest white. The cover was the only part of the book Steve Jobs wanted to control, writes Isaacson in his introduction.Though Mr. Jobs pushed the biographer of Albert Einstein and Benjamin Franklin to write in his own way, generously allowing the writer more than 40 interviews, this book offers quite a different view of Mr. Jobs, who won much praise from his fans after his death on October 5th at the age of 56.As a biographer of Albert Einstein a nd Benjamin Franklin, Mr. Isaacson knows how to celebrate longdead genius, but he claimed that Steve Jobs would not be entirely praiseful words. The picture he paints, particularly in the first half of this book, is not nice. Mr. Jobs emerges as a controlling and often coldblooded character. A child of the 1960s counterculture (反主流文化),he hated materialism and lived in simply furnished houses (in part because he was too particular abou t furniture),But when Apple went public in 1980, he refused to give any share to Daniel Kottke, a longtime supporter and soul mate from college. “He has to abandon the people he is close to”, observes Andy Hertzfeld, an early Apple engineer.Mr. Jobs was undoubtedly possessing an extraordinary ability to attract others and inspire a kind of faith that could not be questioned. But also he could be cold and cruel. If he disapproved of an employee’s work,he often shamed him.“This is who I am,” he once said after being challenged,“and you can’t expect me to be someone I’m not.”This disgusting personality was n’t always helpful, but it served a purpose, writes Mr. Isaacson, many would “end their chain of horror stories by saying that he got them to do things they never dreamed possible”.Mr. Isaacson treats Steve Jobs as the biography of record, which means that it is a strange book to read so soon after its subject’s death.29.The biography for Jobs is believed to have the perfect design because________.A. it follows Jobs’ styleB. its cover is entirely whiteC. black and white are his favoriteD. it is designed by a famous biographer30. The picture of Jobs that Isaacson paints in his book is________.①cruel ②humorous ③particular ④generousA. ①③B. ②③C. ①④D. ③④31. It can be safely concluded that________.A. Jobs didn’t care about the design of the bookD. all descriptions of Jobs are not nice in the book32.This passage can be classified as________.A. a personal diaryB. a book reviewC. a news reportD. a TV interviewDDecreasing grain prices along with growing costs of production means Chinese farmers are unlikely to see a significant rise in income next year.China’s economic planning chief Ma Kai expressed the concern as the government undertakes an ambitious program to improve rural people’s lives.Grain prices have been dropping since April; and prices of wheat, corn and rice fell 5 per cent from August to October compared with the same period last year, Ma, minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, told an annual meeting on development and reform held over the weekend.Meanwhile, prices of production materials rose 9.1 per cent year on year during the first 10 months. The situation makes it difficult to achieve a “new socialist countryside,” which was last week highlighted(引起注意)as a new concept and “common action” of the whole Party and nation.Vice-Minister of Agriculture Yin Chengjie also said China’s entry to the World Trade Organization also creates hurdles for income rises for the country’s 780million farmers.Farmers’ income is expect ed to increase by 5 per cent this year, hitting the target set by the central government at the beginning of this year.Last year, per capita net income(个人平均纯收入)of Chinese farmers reached 2,936 yuan (US$362), up 6.8 per cent year on year, and the highest increase since 1997.Ma also said China would continue to seek fast, steady economic growth in 2012 but more efforts will be made to deal with the challenges brought about by overheating in some industrial sectors (区域).(from China Daily, December 5, 2011)33.The writer thinks it difficult to achieve a “new socialist countryside” because _____.A. grain prices decrease and production costs growB. “new socialist countryside” is a new conceptC. prices of production materials rose 9.1 percentD. many farmers are working in industrial sectors34.
