NOTES: This unit is arranged for a time span of 8 periods. A teacher can make whatever changes he/she thinks necessary according to his/her own conditions.
Teaching Procedures
Period 1
Section A Wake Up Your Ears
Teaching Steps:
1. Students work in pairs and briefly discuss expressions to show culture and fashion in English.
2. Students study Word Tips to get prepared for doing Listening Practice.
3. Students listen to the recording and do Listening Practice one by one.
4. Check answers to the exercises together.
Period 2
Section B Open Your Mouth
Teaching Steps:
1. Divide the class into groups with 3~4 members in each group, and ask students to do matching in Activity A with group members by studying the pictures printed in the book carefully. Then invite some students of the groups to report answers to the whole class.
2. Lead the open discussion on the questions in Activity B and then ask several students to state their opinions.
Homework: 1) Review the expressions on weather learned in the class and practice with classmates or roommates after class. 2) Preview Text A.
Period 3—4
Section C Enrich Your Mind

Teaching Steps:
1. Ask students to listen to the recording of Word List and read after the recording.
2. Explain some key words in the Word List in detail.

4. Explain the useful phrases and expressions and ask students to make sentences with them.

Paragraph 1
in addition to 除……之外
e.g. In addition to the names on the list, there are six other applicants
除了名单上有名字的,另外还有六名应聘者。

In addition to going shopping, we saw a movie.
除了买东西,我们还看了场电影。

Paragraph 3
While waiting at the bar for service, you are allowed to chat with other people who are also waiting to be serviced. 当你在酒吧等候服务的时候,你可以跟那些同样正
在等候服务的人攀谈。

句中while后省略了you’re。

在以when, whenever, while, till, until, once等引导的时间状语从句中,若其主语与主句的主语相同,且谓语动词为be,则其主语和动词be通常省略。

e.g. You can’t do your homework while watching TV.
你不能一边看电视一边做家庭作业。

While walking on street, he suddenly saw an old friend.
走在路上,他突然看到一位老朋友。

originate in 起源于
e.g. The hot dog did not originate in the United States, but in Germany.
热狗不是起源于美国,而是德国。

The quarrel originate in misunderstanding.
此口角由误会而起。

Paragraph 5
A pub is not only an important cultural location and a place where adults make friends with each other, but also a commuting gathering place. 酒吧不仅是重要的文化据点和成年人聊天、交友的地方,它也是人们下班后聚会的常选之地。

此句是由not only… but also连接的平行结构,也称并列结构。

除了not only… but also,其它并列连词还有and,but,as well as,both,,, and,neither... nor,either... or,rather than,or, or else等。

运用平行结构要注意一下几点:
1)所连接的谓语形式必须一致,例如:
His grandmother could neither read nor write,but she was very smart.
他的祖母既不识字也不会写字,但是她很聪明。

2)所连接的词或短语形式必须一致,例如:
Your final grade is based not only on how well you do on each test, but also on how you participate in class activities.
你的总评成绩不仅构建在你每次的测验做得怎样上,还要看你每次课堂活动的参与情况。

3) 所连接的非谓语动词的形式必须一致,例如:
He was engaged in writing a letter rather than reading newspapers.
他忙于写信,而不是读报。

make friends with sb. 成为……的朋友
e.g. The Internet brings you an infinite space to make friends.
网络带给你一个无限的交友空间。

You can make friends with different people with different backgrounds in the college. 在大学里,你可与各种不同背景的人交往。

indulge in 沉溺于
e.g. Don’t always indulge in empty talk.
别总是纸上谈兵。

As the time is limited, reporters have little opportunity to indulge in their own stylistic preferences.
由于时间有限,记者们很少有机会能按照自己爱好的风格写稿。

Language Points:
Paragraph 1
Stepping into the most popular clothes stores in Britain or the US, you may be surprised by what’s hanging from the rails. 走进英国或美国最尖端的潮流服饰店,你可能会惊讶于店内摆放的物品。

此句中,Stepping into…是一个现在分词短语,其意思相当于时间状语从句When you are stepping into…。

用现在分词短语替代状语从句,要注意分词的形式。

如果分词表达的动作和谓语动作同时进行,那么分词要用进行式。

例如:
While I was walking along the street, I met a friend. Walking along the street, I met a friend. 走在街头,我碰到了一位老朋友。

如果分词的动作先于谓语的动作发生,则分词要用完成形式。

例如:
After she had lit a candle, she went out. Having lit a candle, she went out. 点燃蜡烛后,她就出去了。

(时间状语)
Paragraph 3
afford to 付得起, 能承担
e.g. I cannot afford to go because I haven't a bean. 我没法去,因为我身无分文。

No country can afford to neglect education. 任何国家都不容忽视教育。

Paragraph 6
It’s not only bargain basement fashion stores that have become popular. 备受人们追捧的不仅仅是那些可以讨价还价的地下时装店。

此句是一个强调句型,强调句型的构成形式为:It be +强调部分+ that从句。


调句可以强调句子中除了谓语以外的任何部分。

例如:
It’s Liming that/ who helped us out of trouble yesterday. (强调主语)
It was us that/who Mary helped last year. (强调宾语)
It was not until his wife came back that he went to bed. (强调时间状语)
It was because of the accident that he was late. (强调原因状语)
It was in New Zealand that Elizabeth first met Mr. Smith. (强调地点状语)
It is/ was ... that ... 结构不能强调谓语,如果需要强调谓语时,用助动词do/ does 或did。

例如:
Do sit down. 务必请坐。

Do be careful when you cross the street. 过马路时,务必(千万)要小心啊!Paragraph 7
1. be willing to愿意,乐意
e.g. Successful are those who are willing to take pains.
成功的人都是那些肯努力的人。

She was willing to fulfill her plan at any price.
她愿意不惜任何代价来完成自己的计划。

2. in return for作为……的报酬;替换
e.g. I sent him a present in return for his help.
我送给他一份礼物以回报他的帮助。

We get many benefits in return for our taxes.
我们纳税的同时也得到了很多好处。

3. pass through 经过;经历
e.g. The waterway is wide for many ships to pass through.
这条河很宽,足以使很多船通过。

He has passed through unutterable agonies.
他已经经历了有口难言的烦恼。

Homework: 1) Review new words and expressions in Text B and prepare for a dictation next class. 2) Do Part Two Focus Exercises after class.

Check the answers and explain those exercises that students make mistakes.
Section D Keep Your Feet on the Ground
Grammar—Attributive Clause I
Teaching Steps:
1. Ask students to do a brainstorm on what they have known about Attributive Clause in English grammar, such as the classification of Attributive Clause, Relative Pronouns, Relative Adverbs, the position of an Attributive Clause etc. Students can name some of them, for example, who, which, that, where, when, why, etc.
2. Teach students the rules, paying especial attention to Relative Pronouns and Relative Adverbs, and the difference between Limited and Unlimited Attributive Clauses.
3. Ask students to do Test Yourself, and then check the answers together.
Period 8
Section E Try Your Hands
Teaching Steps:
1. Ask students to study the sample writing and draw conclusion on how to write a Letter of Invitation and it’s reply by referring back to notes above.
2. Students study the useful sentence patterns briefly.
Section F Lighten Your Brain
Part One An English Song
Teaching Steps:
1. Ask students to listen to the song and fill in the blanks with the exact words that they’ve heard.
2. Check the missing parts together, then play the song again and ask students to sing along.
Homework: 1) Review Section E Try Your Hands, do Writing Practice, and hand in the writing next class. 2) Read the funny story Present for Girlfriend in Section F.。
