Interviewing purpose: With the reformation and opening process, there are more chances for us to communicate with foreigners in varies topics. As we were brought up in different backgrounds with different cultures, our opinions on the same topic may be entirely contrary. Only when we have a deeper understanding of the cultural diversity, will we be able to expand our understanding of others and reexamine some of our false assumptions as well as learning from them. In order to know more about cultural diversity, we chose Giving Thanks as our topic and had Cross-cultural interviews on ten people with different nationalities, including Chinese, American, Korean and so on.
Interviewing process: After distributing the work to each group members, we started our tasks in different ways, including face-to-face interview, questionnaire, telephone interview and so on. As we have made enough preparation and designed questions in advance, it hasn’t taken us much time to finish the work. The most difficult part was to find at least five foreigners for our interviews. Since we didn’t know many foreigners, we have tried a variety of methods to contact people with different nationalities. And, besides our original interviewing records, we also made several PowerPoint to present our interviewing process in an organized way.
Activity Summary: According to our interviews, people in different ages and nationalities have variety answers to the same question. It seems that younger people are usually more generous to give thanks to others than elder people, resulting from their extroversion and international mind. Also, people who received western education may be more indebted than easterners, for they were brought up with the principle that filling their hearts with thankfulness, thus leading to the result that giving thanks has become a custom in their daily life and even a part of culture.
There is also one point in our survey which is worth studying——what people are grateful for. This is a quite undertaking because many people just see the things in surface, but we must dig it out.Based on the conclusion of our survey, it is parents more than others that most people are grateful for. The explanation of this fact is not as simple as we have thought. Is that just for the money they have given us or the food they have cooked for us? Obviously, the answer is no. It is their love and sacrifices that creating a comfort environment for us to grow up happily and healthily.
To sum up, whether we are easterners or westerners, we should keep a kind heart and never be mean to give thanks. Although different lifestyles and values have made us grown into diverse people, we keep the same belief to reward those who had been helpful to us. Try to express feelings from the bottom of the heart, then you will find a harmony world full of trust and love.
