高二下学期英语人教版教材期末考试试题及答案3Ⅳ、阅读理解(共16小题;每小题2分,满分32分)AMaking an advertisement for television often costs more than a movie. For example, a two-hour movie costs $6 million to make. A TV commercial can cost more than $6,000 a second. And that does not include the cost of paying for airtime. Which is more valuable, the program or the ad? In terms of money and making money is what television is all about the commercial is by far the more important.Research, market testing, talent, time and money all come together to make us want to buy a product. No matter how bad we think a commercial is, it works. The sales of Charm went up once the ads began. TV commercials actually buy their way into our head. We, in turn, buy the product. And the ads work because so much time and attention are given them. Here are some rules of commercial ad making. If you want to get the lower-middle-class buyer, make sure the announcer has a tough, manly voice. Put some people in the ad who work with their hands. If you want to sell to an upper-class audience, make sure that the house, the furniture, and the hairstyle are types that the group identifies with. If you want the buyer feel superior to the character selling the product, then make that person so stupid or silly that everyone will feel great about himself or herself. We laug h at commercials. We don’t think we pay that much attention to them. But evidence shows we are kidding ourselves. The making of a TV commercial that costs so much money is not kid stuff. It’s big, big business. And it’s telling us what to think, what we ne ed, and what to buy. To put it simply, the TV commercial is a form of brainwashing.56、TV commercials are more important than other programs to television because .A.They bring in great profits.B.They require a lot of money to make.C.They are not difficult to produce.D.They attract more viewers than other programs.57、The purpose of all the efforts made in turning out TV commercials is .A.To persuade people to buy the product.B.To show how valuable the product is.C.To test the market value of the product.D.To make them as interesting as TV movies.58、From the rules set for making commercial ads, we can see that .A.The lower-middle-class buyer likes to work with his hand.B.The more stupid the characters, the more buyers of the product.C.Ad designers attract different people with different skills.D.An upper-class buyer is more interested in houses and furniture than a lower-middle-class buyer.59、The undrelined word “kidding”(para. 4) most probably means .A.behaving as a child.ughing at.C.making fun of.D.not telling the truth to.60、It is believed by the writer that .A.Few people like to watch TV commercials. commercials are a good guide to buyers. commercials often make people laugh.D.People do not think highly of TV commercials.BA graded reader is a book containing simplified languages used to help learners master the language. Readers come in different levels, from beginners to advanced. English learners need to choose a reader that is suitable for their level. Why use readers? Lots of research shows that extensive reading improves all aspects of language learning, including vocabulary, speaking skills, fluency(流利),writing skills and reading comprehension.Reading is a way of learning English without classes or a teacher. It helps develop learner independence. And while reading graded readers, learners don’t have to run to a dictionary because the language is at their level. How do I get started? The entire class can read the same book or different books at different times. How do I know the right level? If your class is all reading the same book, choose one that is appropriate for their level. If your students are reading different books, you can have a selection of books at different levels. In this case, don’t worry too much about the level. A learner who is interested in detective stories might read a higher level book if the motivation(动机)is there. How to read the book depends on students’ age, motivation and clas s time available. Some classes like to read silently, others like to read aloud in small groups and some enjoy being read to by the teacher. Be sensitive to the class and ask for their opinions. Some pre-reading activities are needed. Before students open a book, it is important to spark interest in the story and in the whole process of reading. For example, ask them to guess what the story is from cover, chapter titles and let students put them in the best order, or discuss the author.During reading, choose a suitable chapter or chapters that can be broken down to make a comic strip (连环漫画). Or students select a part of the book to make into a radio play. Students can also become journalists and report on parts of the story. Choose a piece of action and have students write it up. Besides, students can role-play an interview with a character.61、Who do you think the passage is written mainly for?A.Students.B.Parents.C.Teachers.D.Pupils.62、When do you think students can become journalists and report on parts of the story?A.Before reading.B.During reading.C.During warming up.D.After reading.63、From the passage, we can learn that .A.readers can make classroom funB.reading can help develop learners dependenceC.some pre-reading activities are not neededD.extensive reading improves all aspects of language learning。

Every time my friends visit me, my nose is buried in a book. Wherever I go, I always have a book with me. Novels, history books, stories about people, journals and news—I read them all and I’ve learnt a lot, too. For example, many things in life happen for the best even if we don’t like or understand them. Why is reading such an enjoyable pastime for me? I probably first learned about it from my parents. My mother read to me at night in my childhood and bought me picture books. The greatest gift she has given me is a love for reading. And it will be a life-long habit. No one ever asked me why I liked to read. They just saw me and asked, “Oh? Is that for school work?” And I just shook my head, “No. It’s just for fun.” While reading a good book, I can totally forget myself and fly to another world. It’s like exploring through someone’s eyes, which is just as exciting as watching a movie.Reading is also necessary in order to learn about writing, to improve my use of words and phrases and broaden my knowledge. What a pity to see our imagination disappear, for we don’t exercise it often. Reading can even be good for one’s health, I think. Everyone should read sad stories that make us cry and also books with humor that make us laugh out loud! 9.Among the gifts my parents have given me, which is the most valuable one?A.A love for reading. B.Picture books.C.Good health. D.A lovable pastime.10.In the fourth paragraph, the author thinks reading can ____.A.make his parents happy B.finish his school workC.improve writing and broaden knowledge D.help him understand some movies 11.If we don’t use our imagination often, ____.A.it is bad for our health B.we will soon learn how to writeC.it will help us to have a good rest D.it will soon disappear12.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.Why do I have few friends? B.What are my life habits?C.Why do I love reading? D.Why do things happen for the best?【答案】9.A10.C11.D12.CAre some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experiences? Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes. To some extent our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied circumstances. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.It is easy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random(随机地) from the population,it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand we take two identical (完全相同的) twins they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differences in intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact thatpeople who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence.13..Which of these sentences best describes the writer’s point in Para. 1?A.To some extent, intelligence is given at birth.B.Intelligence is developed by the environment.C.Some people are born clever and others born stupid.D.Intelligence is fixed at birth, but is developed by the environment.14.It is suggested in this passage that________.A.close relations usually have similar intelligenceB.unrelated people are not likely to have different intelligenceC.the closer the blood relationship between people, the more different they are likely to be in intelligenceD.people who live in close contact with each other are not likely to have similar degrees of intelligence15.In Para. 1, the word "circumstances" means________.A.intelligence B.lifeC.environments D.housing16.The best title for this article would be________.A.On IntelligenceB.What Intelligence MeansC.We are Born with IntelligenceD.Environment Plays a Part in Developing Intelligence【答案】13.D14.B15.C16.AEnglish ConversationLeader:Mandi Ashmore english @ We meet on Mondays at 14:30 at the IWC clubhouse. I found one and because of my shaking hands, I could barely get it to my lips. But I had no matches; they had taken those. I looked through the bars at the guard. He did not make eye contact with me. I called out to him “Have you got a light?” He looked at me, shrugged and came over to light my cigarette. As he came close and lit the match, his eyes unconsciously locked with mine. At that moment, I smiled. I don't know why I did that. Perhaps it was nervousness; perhaps it was because, when you get very close, one to another, it is very hard not to smile. In any case, I smiled. In that instant, it was as though a spark jumped across the gap between our two hearts, our two human souls. I know he didn't want to, but my smile leaped through the bars and caused a smile on his lips, too. He lit my cigarette but stayed near, looking at me directly in the eyes and continuing to smile.I kept smiling at him, now thinking of him as a person and not just a guard. “Do you have kids?” he asked. “Yes, here, here.” I took out my wallet and nervously fumbled for the pictures of my family. He, too, took out the pictures of his family and began to talk about his plans and hopes for them. My eyes were filled with tears. I said that I feared that I'd never see my family again, never have the chance to see them grow up. Tears came to his eyes, too. Suddenly, without another word, he unlocked my cell and silently led me out. Out of the prison, quietly and by back routes, out of the town. There, at the edge of town, he released me. And without another word, he turned back toward the town.24.What had happened to the man before?A.He had been badly treated.B.He had killed someone.C.He had been searched.D.He had been forbidden to get in touch with anyone.25.Why did the man want to smoke cigarettes?A.Because he was sure he was to be killed.B.Because he wanted to ease his nervousness.C.Because he wanted to talk to the guard.D.Because he was used to smoking cigarettes.26.Which of the following is true according to the passage?A.The man was a heavy smoker.B.The man smiled to please the guard.C.The guard set the man free with permission.D.The man hadn't thought the guard would set him free.27.What do you think finally saved the man's life?A.The smile. You either have to whisper or go outside to keep the conversation private, which does not feel good. Now Hushme aims to fix this problem by muffling your voice and making you look like Bane in the film Batman.Hushme is a strange high-tech mask (口罩) that blocks the sound of the wearer’s voice so that people nearby can’t hear what is being said. It connects to your phone via Blucetooth and comes with a pair of earphones. When you get a private call, all you have to do is put the mask on and it will do the rest. The pair of thick pads over your mouth does a good job of muffling your voice, but to ensure nothing gets through. Hushme also has speakers that play a variety of sounds when you speak. The Hushme mask, which comes in a variety of colors, can be worn around the neck, like a regular pair of earphones, and attaches in front of your mouth thanks to a couple of very powerful magnets (磁铁). It’s not yet clear how comfortable spea king with thisBane-like mask over your mouth really is, or how effective its speech muffling ability is, so we know so far is that it makes you look strange. The sound choices for covering your voice currently include wind, ocean, rain, birds, monkey, but new ones could be added in the future.Advertised as the “world’s first voice mask for mobile phones’. A32. A33. B34. CThere are several ways from which to choose for you to keep your kids safe in your neighborhood. But the first step to keep your child safe in your neighborhood is to know your neighbors.Knowing your neighbors can save you a lot of worry. It lets you know that the car that has just driven down the street belongs to “the yellow house on the corner”, or the truck that has just driven by the playground looks unfamiliar, but the guy in the passenger seat resides two doors down. It’s these simple things that keep you from going_out_of_your_mind whenever you see someone driving by where children are playing. But you shouldn’t just know what they look like. The next step is to know them well. What do they do?How do they act?You might be OK with them driving by the playground since they live in the neighborhood, but are you OK with them being on the playground? Knowing your neighbors solves several things. First you find out what kind of people they are. This helps you know if you should let your child go out in an area where they gather. Let us fac e it: you do not want your child to play around people or people’s children that curse (咒骂) or hit each other. Sometimes you have to protect your child against your own neighbors.Knowing them also makes them know you. Being neighbors is an interesting thing. You might not like them or have the same views as them, but we all usually protect those that we consider our own. If you know your neighbors, they know you. They are more likely to look after the child of the nice lady down the street in the brick (砖) house, than the people, in the house on the corner, who no one ever sees.35.This passage is mainly to tell us________.A.how to keep your child safe in the neighborhoodB.how to set a good example to your neighborsC.how to get along with your neighborsD.how to teach your child to protect himself36.If someone resides two doors down, he________.A.studies at the same school with your kidB.often comes to the neighborhood to offer helpC.lives in the same neighborhood as youD.likes driving the truck around the neighborhood[37.The underlined phrase “going out of your mind” in Paragraph 2 probablymeans________.A.becoming very excitedB.becoming very worriedC.becoming very disappointedD.becoming very relaxed38.From the third paragraph we can know that________.A.it is important for you to be polite to your neighborsB.people in the same neighborhood are quite differentC.people like enjoying themselves on the playgroundD.knowing your neighbors helps to keep your kids safe【答案】35.A36.C37.B38.DI moved to Chicago ten years ago. What is the cause of this rise? Most of these singers have taken music as a“job” because it is a good source of making money. And if you have a good appearance and also expensive clothes to show off at your concerts or at different appearances in public, then your voice is not as important as it should be.The public will prefer to admire more the most interesting parts of your body, whether you are a girl or a boy. They will even forget about the fact that you are there to show your musicskills ,not your dancing, which is important too,but not at such a high level. Therefore,we can see many young girls on TV who look very good but who have nothing to do with music. They choose to wear very provocative(挑逗性的)clothes to catch attention, but when it comes to singing they are a complete mess and one doesn't need to have an ear for music to notice their lack of talent. But anyway, they have concerts and they enjoy travelling from one place to another. It is the public's fault because they accept this and are pleased with this commercial music.People who enjoy this kind of music are generally young people while adults prefer listening to old good bands. However, the young generation should understand while appearance is important,it is less important than talent and a good voice. If somebody has a great voice and wants to become a singer,he should take some special courses in this area, because they will help him improve singing abilities.59.The passage shows that many singers consider music as_____.A.an art serving the publicB.a good way of making moneyC.a way of living fullyD.a fashionable lifestyle60.From the passage we can learn that____.A.appearance is the most important thing in the world of musicB.all people who have received training in singing can become famousC.adults should help young people improve their abilitiesD.a singer's talent and voice are the most important factors61.What do you think is the author's attitude towards the rising number of new singers and bands?A.Critical. Fred Epstein ,in his book If I Make It to Five, tells a story he heard from one of friends about Tom, a four-year-old boy with a cancer in his back bone. He came through several operations and a lot of pain by mastering his imagination.Tom loved to pretend, and he particularly loved to play superheroes ,Dr. Epstein explained that it was actually a brilliant way for his young mind to handle the terrifying and painful life he led.The day before his third trip to the operating room, Tom was terribly afraid. ”Maybe I could go as Superman ,”he whispered to his mom. Hearing this, the mother hesitated for a while. She had avoided buying the expensive costume(戏装),finally she agreed. The next day Tom appeared as the powerful Superman, showing off through the hospital halls and coolly waving his hand to the people greeting him along the way. And Tom, with the strength of his fantasy, successfully made it through the operation. The power of imagination need not be reserved for children only. We all have the power to use our fantasies to attempt things we never thought possible, to go through those things that seem impossible, and to achieve what we never believed we could. Just as Dr. Epstein putsit ,”If you can dream it, you can do it”It doesn‘t mean that you should dress as a superhero for your next job interview. But, nexttime you are texted in a way that seems impossible, imagine what it would take to overcome it .Become the person you need to become to win over your challenge and do it in your mind first. So, let your imagination run wild, and dare to dream.67.What do we know about Tom?A.He was seriously ill B.He was a dishonest boy.C.He was crazy about magic D.He w as Dr.Epstein’s patient68.What can be inferred about Tom’s mother?A.She was a rich lady B.She refused Tom’s requestC.She wanted Tom to be a superhero D.She wanted to get Tom through the pain 69.When Tom went for the third operation,he .A.pretended to be painful B.acted like a superheroC.appeared in poor spirit s D.argued with his mother70.In the last paragraph, you are advised .A.to go through some difficult testsB.to wake up from your wild dreamsC.to become a powerful person in your mindD.to wear expensive clothes for job interviews71.What is the purpose of the passage?A.To tell us an interesting story.B.To help us make right decisions.C.To advise us to care about children.D.To encourage us to use our imagination.【答案】67.A68.D69.B70.C71.DBritish children’s writer Roald Dahl ate chocolates and sweets “pretty much every mealtime”, remembers daughter Ophelia Dahl. After dinner, whether dining alone or entertaining guests, Dahl would pass around a little。

During their first four minutes together, according to a book by Dr. Leonard Zunin. "Every time you meet someone in a social situation, give him your undivided attention for four minutes. A lot of people's whole lives would change if they did just that."When we are introduced to new people, we should try to appear friendly and self-confident. In general, he says, "People like people who like themselves." On the other hand, we should not make the other person think we are too sure of ourselves.Hearing such advice, one might say, "But I'm not a friendly, self-confident person. That's not my nature. It would be dishonest for me to act that way." In reply, Dr. Zunin would claim that a little practice can help us feel comfortable about changing our social habits. We can becomeaccustomed to any changes we choose to make in our personality. "It's like getting used to a new car. It may be unfamiliar at first, but it goes much better than the old one."But isn't it dishonest to give the appearance of friendly self-confidence when we don't actually feel that way? Perhaps, but according to Dr. Zunin, "total honesty" is not always good for social relationships, especially during the first few minutes of contact. There is a time for everything, and a certain amount of play-acting may be best for the first few minutes of contact with a stranger. That is not the time to complain about one's health or to mention faults one finds in other people. It is not the time to tell the whole truth about one's opinions and impressions. The author also declares that interpersonal relations should be taught as a required course in every school, along with reading, writing, and mathematics. A British scientist Alec Jeffrey came across DNA fingerprinting: He identified the patterns of genetic material that are unique to almost every individual. His discovery changed everything from the way we do criminal investigations to the way we decide family law. But the professor of genetics at the University of Leicester, UK, is still surprised, and a bit worried, by the power of the technology he released upon the world. The patterns within DNA are unique to each individual, except identical twins, who share the same pattern. The ability to identify these patterns has been used to convict(证明…有罪) murderers and to clear people who are wrongly accused. It is also used to identify the victims of war and settle disputes over who is the father of a child.Jeffrey said he and his colleagues made the discovery by accident while tracking genetic variations(变异). But, within six months of the discovery, genetic fingerprinting had been used in an immigration case, to prove that an African boy really was his parents’ son. In 1986, it was used for the first time in a British criminal case: It cleared one suspect after being accused of two murders and helped convict another man.DNA testing is now very common. In Britain, a national criminal database established in 1995 now contains 2.5 million DNA samples. The U.S. and Canada are developing similar systems. But there are fears about the stored DNA samples and how they could be used to harm a person’s privacy. That includes a person’s medical history, racial origin or psychological profile. “Ther e is the long-term risk that people can get into these samples and start getting additional information about a person’s paternity(父子关系) or risk of disease,” Jeffrey said.DNA testing is not an unfailing proof of identity. Still, it is considered a reasonably reliable system for determining the things it is used for. Jeffrey estimates the probability of two individuals’ DNA profiles matching in the most commonly used tests at one in a billion.62. According to the text, DNA testing can NOT be used in _______ .A. doing criminal investigationsB. deciding family lawC. clearing wrongly accused peopleD. telling twins apart63. He walked in the streets of Brooklyn day after day with his favorite music blasting directly into his ears. By his early 20s, Michel had lost much of his upper-range hearing. The Children’s Hearing Institute reports that hearing loss among children and young adults is rising in the United States, and that one third of the damage is caused by noise.Surrounded By NoiseWe live in a noisy world. Young and old alike are beset by sounds over which we may have little or no control: power mowers, leaf blowers, snow blowers, cars and house alarms, sirens, motorcycles, Jet Skis, loudspeakers, even movie previews. We attend rock concerts, weddings, parties and sports events at which the music is so loud you can hardly hear the person sitting next to you. At home, televisions, stereos and computer games are often turned up so loud that listeners can not hear a doorbell or telephone. Many “modern ” restaurants have chosen noise enhancement instead of abatement(减轻). Any time you need to shout to be heard by someone near you, your hearing is most likely to be in a decibel(分贝) danger zone.As if environmental noise were not enough, now we surround children with noisy toys and personal listening devices that can permanently damage their hearing. Toys that meet the safetystandards of the American Society for Testing and Materials can produce sound up to 138 decibels,as loud as a jet plane taking off. Yet workplace rules require hearing protection for those exposedto noise above 85 decibels.Protecting Young EarsBefore buying noisemaking toys, parents would do well to listen to how loud they are. If thetoy comes with a volume control, monitor its use to make sure it is kept near the lowest level.Consider returning gifts that make loud noises, disable the noise-making function. Or limit the useof noisy toys to outside play areas.Children who play computer games and stereo equipment should be warned to keep thevolume down. Time spent in video arcades, where the noise level can be over 110 decibels, shouldbe strictly limited. Most iPods have a control that allow parents to set a maximum volume.Don’t take children to loud action movies. If you do g o and the sound seems deafening, askthe manager to turn down the volume or insist on you money back. Children who play in bandsand teenagers who use power tools, gardening equipment or guns should be made to wear hearing protection, available at sporting goods stores. The League for the Hard of Hearing urges parents to encourage participation in quietactivities, like reading, watching family-oriented films, doing puzzles, making thins with construction toys, playing educational computer games, drawing and painting, and visitinglibrarians and museums. All That noise is damaging Children’s Hearinga) power mowers, leaf blowers, snow blowers, and etc.b) the music at rock concerts, weddings, parties and sports events which ___74___ usc) televisions, stereos and computer games ___75___ than doorbells or telephonesd) “modern ” restaurants★Noise from:toys and listening devices which cause ___76___ damage to hearing.★★★★★五、书面表达(满分25分)自2009年2月起,中国政府启动了一项“家电下乡”计划,请你根据下表提示的信息,用英语为China Today写一篇短文,简要介绍此事。

AZhoukoudian is a small village situated about 50 kilometers to the southwest of Beijing. In the 1920s, archaeologists discovered some prehistoric human bones there which changed people’sview of China’s history. They came from an unknown species of man and were the first evidence of human life in China thousands of years ago. The remains were three teeth! In 1929, a complete skull was also discovered. Eventually, archaeologists found almost 200 items, including six skulls and more than 150 teeth. These discoveries proved the existence of a human species who lived in the area between 700,000 and 200,000 years ago. Four sites where Beijing Man and his relatives lived were discovered on the northern face of Longgushan. They lived in the caves in the area. However, the life span of Beijing Man was short. About 70% of the people probably died before the age of 14. Fewer than 5% lived to the age of 50. Ashes were found alongside the fossils which showed they had used fire for cooking food and also for light, warmth, and protection against wild animals. This is the earliest evidence of the use of fire anywhere in the world. They also made tools of bones and stones. Unfortunately, when Japan invaded China in 1937, excavations at the Beijing Man Site stopped and most of the fossils disappeared, including a Beijing Man skull. After the People’s Republic of China was established in 1949, the work started again.Zhoukoudian was listed as a World Heritage Site in December 1987. It has not only given us important information about prehistoric Asian societies, but also provided amazing evidence about the process of evolution. Today, parts of the caves have been badly affected by rain. Some areas are almost completely covered in weeds, causing serious damage. Pollution from the nearby factories has also contributed to the problem. This is a very serious matter and the Chinese Academy of Sciences is trying to raise public awareness of it.41. He, since a very early age, has been looking after cattle. At twelve years old he knows more about cattle than most of you. However, he has never been to school. Has this boy had any education?Education is discovering about ourselves and about the people and things around us. All the people who care about us — our parents, brothers, sisters, friends — are our teachers. In fact, we learn something from everyone we meet. We start learning on the day we were born, not on the first day we go to school. Every day we have new experiences, like finding a bird’s nest, discovering a new street in our neighborhood, making friends with someone we didn’t l ike before. New experiences are even more fun when we share them with other people.Encouragement from the people around us enables us to explore things as many as possible. As we grow up, we begin to find out what we are capable of doing. You may be good at cooking, or singing or playing football. You find this out by doing these things. Just thinking about cooking doesn’t tell you whether you are good at it.We learn so much just living from day to day. So why is school important? Of course you canlearn some things better at home than at school, like how to do the shopping, and how to help old or disabled people who can’t do everything for themselves. At school, teachers help us to read and write. With their guidance, we begin to see things in different ways.46. The writer takes the African boy as an example to show that _______.A. According to the last paragraph, we know that .A. the school is not so important as our living placesB. the school enables us to understand the world in other waysC. the school teaches us things which are useless at homeD. the school cannot prepare us for our daily livesCStudents who want to attend an American college or university must explain how they will pay for their education. They have to show that they will be able to pay for each year of study. Students have to consider not only the tuition, the cost of classes, but also meals and a place tolive in, which is known as room-and-board. They also need money for books and supplies. And they need money to spend on social activities and other things.Educational advisers say foreign students should have enough money in a local bank to pay for at least two months of expenditure. So how much will a year at an American school cost? Generally speaking, the answer is: a lot. A leading state university in the Pacific Northwest will serve as an example. The University of Washington says foreign students are paying more than $36,000 this year. This major research university currently has 2,600 foreign students from more than one hundred countries. There are many schools that cost less, but also others that cost more. Its web site says the University of Washington does not offer financial assistance to international students. This is generally true of American schools, especially at the undergraduate level. The international application for the university includes a Statement of Financial Responsibility that must be signed. Students must also provide a bank letter or statement from within the past six months. And they have to name someone who will help with payments. These people must send proof from a bank to show that they have the money. Your government or employer may be able to help you pay all or some of the college costs. A good idea is to ask at least eighteen months before you want to start classes in the United States. Our Foreign Student Services, including links to web sites discussed in our reports, can be found at .
