常用比喻词like, as, as if, as though 等,例如:1、This elephant is like a snake as anybody can see.

2、He looked as if he had just stepped out of my book of fairytales and had passed me like a spirit.

3、It has long leaves that sway in the wind like slim fingers reaching to touch something.

1、German guns and German planes rained down bombs, shells and bullets...

2、The diamond department was the heart and center of the store.

1、The Great Wall was made not only of stones and earth, but of the flesh and blood of millions of men.

My heart is like a singing bird.(我的心像一只歌唱的小鸟。

)O my love's like a red, red rose,That's newly sprung in June; That's sweetly played in tune.2.

例如: 1.He is a pig.

)2.She is a woman with a stony heart.

)3.Mark Twain is a mirror of America.

)在一篇描绘中东市场的文章中,作者在描绘其中的铜器市场中燃烧着的木炭时这样写道: “the red of the live coals glowing, bright and then dimming rhythmically to the strokes of the bellows”。

simile and metaphor

simile and metaphor

• 4) Branching metaphor
• The branching metaphor is popular with reporters and journalists, who often make the basic comparison the title of an article, as in: • Is Tsingtao winning the cold war? … Tsingtao has taken the offensive and invaded Russian vodka strongholds previously regarded as secure. Ad.in The New York Times Magazine Mar.23,1980
• 5) Mixed mataphors • Mixed metaphors can produce very amusing and illogical Imagery, and are to be strictly avoided. It is surprising, however, how easily sometimes they blunder into speech and writing. Students make this mistake, as in:
• As +adj.+ as + n. (the former “as” can be omitted): • (as) blind as a bat 目光如豆 • (as) cool as cucumber 泰然自若 • (as) cold as a marble 冷若冰霜 • (as) busy as a bee 像蜜蜂一样忙 • (as) firm as a rock 坚如磐石 • (as) light as a rock 轻如鸿毛 • (as) mute as an oyster 噤若寒蝉 • (as) strong as a horse 健壮如牛 • Idioms: • Like a duck to water 如鱼得水 • Like a hen on a hot griddle 像热锅上的蚂蚁 • Like a cat in a hole 瓮中之鳖

《文学词汇词典》(A Dictionary of Literary Terms)对明喻是这样定义的:A figure of speech in which one thing is likened to another, in such a way as to clarify and enhance an image. It is explicit comparison (as opposed to the metaphor where comparison is implicit) recognizable by the use of words “like” or “as”.

常用的比喻词有 as(如), like(像), seem(似乎), as if (好像), as though(好像), such as(像……

其基本格式是“A is like B”或“A is as…as B”。

The cheque fluttered to the floor like a bird with a broken wing. (Book 1, Unit 3)

例如:●He jumped back as if he had been stung, and the blood rushedsintoshis wrinkled face.●The cheque fluttered to the floor like a bird with a broken wing.

)●Like climbing a mountain, we struggle up three feet and fall back two.(正如爬山,我们费力爬上三英尺,又掉下去两英尺。

)I see also the dull, drilled, docile, brutish masses of the Hun soldiery blodding on like a swarm of crawling locusts.(丘吉尔在此使用了一个恰当的比喻,把德国士兵比作蝗虫,因为二者有着共同之处-传播毁灭。

例如:●What will parents do without the electronic baby-sitter?

●... while most of us are only too ready to apply to others the cold wind of criticism, we are somehow reluctant to give our fellows the warm sunshine of praise.(……

英文里也有类似的用法,了解委婉语背后真正的含义对阅读英语文章也是很有帮助的哦~下面我们就一起看几个例子:elder citizen老年人(不用old people)pass away逝世(不用die)You've got a prime figure.

He talks like a book all the time.

He can no more swim than a hammer can.

He is, as it were, a walking dictionary.

一、明 (the simile)明通常是把被比的“本体”和用以比的“ 体”同出,明本体事物像体事物,用介like,as,as if,as⋯so,seem等以及句型 A ⋯ to B as C ⋯ toD等等表示“好像”意思的比法就叫明。

例如:Bacteria are so small that a single round one of commontype is about 1/25,000 of an inch across when these bacteria are magnified 1,000 times, they look only aslarge as a pencil point.

例如,Argument is war.

He has a heart of stone. To me, the pageant of seasons is a thrilling and unending drama.

Metaphora way of describing something by referring to it as something different and suggesting that it has similar qualities to that thingSimilean expression that describes something by comparing it with something else, using the words 'as' or 'like', for example 'as white as snow'Metaphor(隐喻):用一个词来指代与该词本来所指事物有相似特点的另一种事物的方法。

如果把例句:“My girlfriend is like a sweet watermelon.”,去掉了like 这个描述词,这便是隐喻用法而不是明喻了。

(1) A nest is to a bird what a house is to a man. (Art and Architecture, SEFC 2A, P.21)

本句话的语言结构:“A is to B whatC is to D”为隐喻结构,意为“A 对B 而言正如C 对D 一样。

”(2) There were a few lordly poplars before the house.

All reactionaries are paper tigers . If dreams die ,life is a broken-winged bird that can not fly .
1. His face was as grey as ashes . 2. I saw the master looking about him as if he wishes to impress upon his mind everything in the room . 3. It looks like a terrible tiger .

1.The snow was like a white blanket drawn over the field.2.He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to he ar him crow.

1.His friend has become a thorn in his side.(他的朋友已变成眼中钉肉中刺。

)2.You are your mother’s glass.(你是你母亲的翻版。

)3.Hope is a good breakfast, but it’s a bad supper.

He has a heart of stone. He has a heart like stone.

There again came out the second flash, with the spring of a serpent and the shout of a fiend, looked green as an emerald, and the reverberation was stunning.(爆发了第二次闪电,她像蛇一样蜿蜒,如魔鬼般嘶叫,像翠玉般碧绿,轰隆隆震耳欲聋。
