A medium, in advertising talk, is the way you communicate your message. You might say that the first medium used in advertising was signs withsymbols. The second medium was audio, or sound, although that term is not used exactly in the way we use it today. Originally, just the human voice and maybe some kind of simple instrument, such as a bell, were used to get people’s attentionA crier, in the historical sense, is not someone who weeps easily. It is someone, probably a man, with a voice loud enough to be heard over the other noises of city. In ancient Egypt, shopkeepers might hire such a person to spread the news about their products. Often this earliest form of advertising involved a newly arrived ship loaded with goods. Perhaps the crier described the goods, explained where they came from, and praised their quality. His job was, in other words, not too different from a TV or radio commercial in today’s world.(2013 浙江卷阅读理解A篇)45. The last two paragraphs are mainly about .A. the history of advertisingB. the benefits of advertisingC. the early forms of advertisingD. the basic design of advertising45. C。

According to a newsurvey(调查) by the National Sleep Foundation, 51% of kids aged 10 to 18 go to bed at 10 pm or later on school nights, even though they have to get up early. Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7- to 12-year-olds said they felt tired during the day, and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school. How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age. Babies need a lot of rest: most of them sleep about 18 hours a day! Adults need about eight hours. For most school-age children, ten hours is ideal(理想的). But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10- to 12-year-olds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids said they do before bedtime? Watch TV.“More children are going to bed with TVs on, and there are more opportunit ies(机会) to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone,” says Dr. Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher at Brown University Medical School. She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep. Other experts say part of the problem is chemical. Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones not only make teenagers’ bodies develop adult characteristics, but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 pm.Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts have decided to start high school classes later than they used to. Three years ago, schools in Edina, Minnesota, changed the start time from 7:25 am to 8:30 am. Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the results.25. What is the new National Sleep Foundation survey on?A.American kids’ sleeping habits.B.Teenagers’ sleep-related diseases.C.Activities to prevent sleeplessness.D.Learning problems and lack of sleep.26.How many hours of sleep do 11-year-olds need every day?A.7 hours.B.8 hours.C.10 hours.D.18 hours.27.Why do teenagers go to sleep late according to Carskadon?A.They are affected by certain body chemicals.B.They tend to do things that excite them.C.Th ey follow their parents’ examples.D.They don’t need to go to school early.CFLORENCE, Italy—Svetlana Cojochru feels hurt. The Moldovan has lived here seven years as a caregiver to Italian kids and the elderly, but in order to stay she’s had to prove her language skills by taking a test which requires her to write a postcard to an imaginary friend and answer a fictional job ad.Italy is the latest Western European country trying to control a growing immigrant(移民) population by demanding language skills in exchange for work permits, or in some cases, citizenship. Some immigrant advocates worry that as hard financial times make it more difficult for natives to keep jobs, such measures will become more a vehicle for intolerance than integration(融合). Others say it’s only natural that newcomers learn the language of their host nation, seeing it as a condition to ensure they can contribute to society.Other European countries laid down a similar requirement for immigrants, and some terms are even tougher. The governments argue that this will help foreigners better join the society and promote understanding across cultures.Italy, which has a much weaker tradition of immigration, has witnessed a sharp increase in immigration in recent years. In 1990, immigrants numbered some 1.14 million out of Italy’s then 56.7 million people, or about 2 percent. At the start of this year, foreigners living in Italy amounted to 4.56 million of a total population o f 60.6 million, or 7.5 percent, with immigrants’ children accounting for an even larger percentage of births in Italy.Cojochru, the Moldovan caregiver, hoped obtaining permanent residence(居住权) would help her bring her two children to Italy; they live with her sister in Moldova, where salaries are among the lowest in Europe. She was skeptical that the language requirement would encourage integration.Italians always “see me as a foreigner,” an outsider, even though she’s stayed in the country for years and can speak the local language fluently, she said.28.Why does Cojochru have to take a language test?A.To continue to stay in Italy.B.To teach her children Italian.C.To find a better job in Italy.D.To better mix with the Italians.29.Some people worry that the new language requirement may ________.A.reduce Italy’s population quicklyB.cause conflicts among peopleC.lead to financial difficultiesD.put pressure on schools30.What do we know about Cojochru?A.She lives with her sister now in Italy.B.She enjoys learning the Italian language.C.She speaks Italian well enough for her job.D. he wishes to go back to her home country.

If I grumbled, he’d say in his loudest father-voice, “That’s what your legs are for!”The walk didn’t bother me as much as the fear of walking alone along the highway and country roads. I also felt less than valued that my father didn’t seem concerned about my safety. But that feeling was canceled one spring evening. It had been a particularly difficult week at college after long hours in labs. I longed for home. When the bus reached thestop, I stepped off and dragged my suitcase to begin the long journey home.A row of hedge(树篱)edged the driveway that climbed the hill to our house. Once I had turned off the highway to start the last lap of my journey, I always had a sense of relief to see the hedge because it meant that I was almost home. On that particular evening, the hedge had just come into view when I saw something gray moving along the top of the hedge, moving toward the house. Upon closer observation, I realized it was the top of my father’s head. Then I knew, each time I’d come home, he had stood behind the hedge, watching , until he knew I had arrived safely. I swallowed hard against the tears. He did care, after all.On later visits, that spot of gray became my watchtower. I could hardly wait until I was close enough to watch for its secret movement above the greenery. Upon reaching home, I would find my father sitting innocently in his chair. “So! My son, it’s you!” he’d say, his face lengthening into pretended surprise.I replied, “Yes, Dad, it’s me. I’m home.”21. What does the underlined word “grumbled” in Paragraph 1probably mean?A. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A. My Father’s Secret.B. My College Life.C. Terrible Journey Home.D. Riding Bus Alone.BTh e British “Daily Telegraph”Traditionally regarded as one of the safest planes in the skies, the Boeing 777’s reputation will have been damaged by the second fatal crash in less than a year. There are around 1,000 Boeing 777s in service, and the plane is a long distance machine, travelling some of the longest routes. It entered service in 1995 and the National Transportation Safety Board, which isresponsible for monitoring US-made aircraft ,has recorded fewer than 60 incidents. But the recent record hasn’t been exact with two major incidents-a crash at San Francisco airport last July, which causes three lives, and the crash-landing of a British Airways 777at Heathrow in January 2008.To our sadness, two days ago, Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 lost contact flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The Malaysian disaster is very different from both the BA incident and the crash involving an Asian Airlines flights at San Francisco International Airport in July , which occurred shortly before landing, while the Malaysia airlines plane disappeared off the radar(雷达)during the early stages of the trip. The accident at San Francisco in July was due to pilot error which led to the engines being set to idle because he believed the computer would maintain sufficient speed to keep the plane up in the air. The BA crash landing, which did not result in any deaths, was finally found to have been caused by a block in the fuel line feeding the engine. However, the Malaysia airlines plane disappeared off the radar during the early stages of the trip. No exact explanations have been given for the Malaysia airlines plane crash. Firstreports suggest that Zaharie Ahmad Shah, the 53-year-oldMalaysian airlines pilot, was hugely experienced-having joined the carrier in 1981 and with 18,365 hours in the aircraft under his belt.25. Which of the following is TRUE of the plane crashes?A. There are four plane crashes mentioned in the passageB. The BA incident in July resulted from the pilot errorC. Three deaths were caused in the crash at San FranciscoD. The crash in San Francisco airport was caused by a block26. What can we learn from the next?A. The exact reason for 370crash is not clearB. Flight 370 crash must be similar to the BA incidentC. The experienced pilot of Flight 370 can’t have operated wrongD. Flight 370 must have been taken control of to a different place27. What you read is ______________.A. a noteB. as cheduleC. a reviewD. a news report28. The main purpose of the passage is to __________.A. introduce the Flight 370crashB. show Boeing777’s safetyC. guess the cause of the Flight 370 crashD. compare the causes of these plane crashesCMany of the world’s countries have reached or are approaching zero population growth (ZPG). Nearly all such lands are economically well developed. They include much of Europe(including Russia), the United States, Canada, Japan. And Australia. As the rate of natural increase(RNI)declines, two things happen.First, the population begins to decline if the loss is not balanced by immigration. Second, a country’s population ages because there are fewer births. Is achieving ZPG good or bad? What happens when a country’s population begins to drop? Many people, after all, believe that population decline is a good thing. But is it good for everyone? Does everyone agree? An aging population can create many problems. Senior citizens require more health care and medical attention. Rather than paying into retirement programs, they begin to draw from their pensions. In the US, the Social Security program, according to many experts, will be used up by 2018. It will pay out more money than it takes in. Additionally , a great number of jobs go begging in search of people willing or entry levelpositions that pay low wages. With an able to do them. Many of these jobs are aging population, who will fill them? At the other extreme, some positions require a large number of training and highly specialized skills. Who will fill these positions as retirees leave the workforce? The answer to the problem of declining and aging population is simple : increased migration.Today many people, particularly those from less developed countries, are migrating in search of employment. Many are willing to take jobs that cannot(or will not) be filled by the domestic population. Others are well educated and highly skilled. Both groups contribute to a country’s economy progress in many ways. Further, they add to the richness of a country’s culture. Of greatest importance, perhaps, is the fact that they have become absolutely necessary to the economy of many lands. As you can see, for many countries and for most immigrants, migration is a win—win situation.29. In the writer’s view, which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Not everyone agrees that achieving ZPG is absolutely goodB. Achieving ZPG is every country’s aim in spite of itsside effectsC. Achieving ZPG is bad for senior citizensD. Achieving ZPG is good for employmentto the passage, the best way to solve the problem of declining and aging population is .A. to improve the health care systemB. to increase RNIC. to increase employmentD. to increase migrationmain idea of the last paragraph is .A. the advantages of increased migrationB. the problem of declining and aging populationC. how to increase migrationD. some ways to enrich a country’s cultureDBefore I studied psychology, I used to think that people would laugh when funny things occurred. While I was right about that, I discovered there are lots of other psychological factors that make people laugh other than the funny part of a joke. When someone laughs at a joke, there will usually be more than one reason that makes him laugh—and the more reasons there are ,the more powerful the joke will be.I was attending a stand-up comedy show in Egypt, and when the man started to make fun of pedestrians crossing streets, everyone laughed their hearts out. The main reason those people strongly laughed was that almost all of them felt angry towards pedestrians who crossed streets carelessly. The joke wasn’t only funny, it also made the audience feel that they were right about being angry at those pedestrians. That is, people were laughing both because of the funny joke and because of the happiness experienced as a result of the psychological support theygot. The better a joke makes a person feel, and the more it includes other psychological factors, the more the person will like it. For example, if you envy one of your friends, and someone tells a joke that is funny and, at the same time, makes your friend seem stupid, then you will probably laugh at it louder than if you weren’t jealous of him.In short, we don’t laugh only when we hear something funny; we also laugh when we experience some kind of happiness that results from the other psychological factors involved in the joke. I strongly discourage making fun of anyone or belittling someone to make someone else laugh. All I want to explain is that if your joke supports a person’s emotions, he will certainly like it a lot.32. What did the author find out after studying psychology?A. Only good jokes make people laughB. Many factors lead to people laughing.C. Funny things can make people laughD. Laughter can make people healthy.33. Why did the audience laugh loud at the pedestrians?A. They played a trick on the pedestrians.B. The pedestrians behaved ina funny way.C. They could feel the pedestrians’happiness.D. Their emotion was approved of by the show.34. What does the underlined word “belittling” probably mean?A. AnnoyB. BlameC. Look down onD. Make up to35. Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?

(2016·天津高考·C)When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him.His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier.Far happier. These are the findings of a 40year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not.“Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence (能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,”said George Vaillant, the psychologist (心理学家) who made the discovery.“And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”Vaillant's study followed these males in great detail.Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47.Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men's mentalhealth scores with their boyhoodactivity scores.Points were awarded for parttime jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems. The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.Working—at any age—is important.Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence—the underpinnings (基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this.Yet work isn't everything. As T olstoy once said,“One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one's work.”46.What do we know about John?A.He enjoyed his career and marriage.B.He had few childhood playmates.C.He received little love from his family.D.He was envied by others in his childhood.47.Vaillant's words in Paragraph 2 serve as .A.a description of personal values and social valuesB.an analysis of how work was related to competenceC.an example for parents' expectations of their childrenD.an explanation why some boys grew into happy men48.Vaillant's team obtained their findings by .A.recording the boys' effort in schoolB.evaluating the men's mental healthC.comparing different sets of scoresD.measuring the men's problem solving ability49.What does the underlined word “sharp” probably mean in Paragraph 4?A.Quick to react.B.Having a thin edge.C.Clear and definite.D.Sudden and rapid.50.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.Competent adults know more about love than work.B.Emotional health is essential to a wonderful adult life.C.Love brings more joy to people than work does.D.Independence is the key to one's success.

作者写文章的目的有三:toexpress one's feelings,attitude and ideas;to affectreaders;to inform readers。

可细分为to introduce,describe,explain,inform,analyze,express,convey,argue,encourage,praise,criticize,advocate等。

[例1] (2016·全国甲卷·C)Reading can be a social activity.Think of the people who belong to book groups. They choose books to read and then meet to discuss them. Now the website turns the page on the traditional idea of a book group.Members go on the site and register the books they own and would like to share.BookCrossing provides an identification number to stick inside the book. Then the person leaves it in a public place, hoping that the book will have an adventure, traveling far and wide with each new reader who finds it.Bruce Pederson, the managing director of BookCrossing, says,“The two things that change your life are the people you meet and books you read.BookCrossing combines both.”Members leave books on park benches and buses,in train stations and coffee shops.Whoever finds their book will go to the site and record where they found it.People who find a book can also leave a journal entry describing what they thoughtof it.Emails are then sent to the BookCrossers to keep them updated about where their books have been found.Bruce Pederson says the idea is for people not to be selfish by keeping a book to gather dust on a shelf at home.BookCrossing is part of a trend among people who want to get back to the “real”and not the virtual(虚拟).The site now has more than one million members in more than one hundred thirtyfive countries.12.What is the best title for the text?A.Online Reading:A Virtual TourB.Electronic Books:A New TrendC.A Book Group Brings Tradition BackD.A Website Links People through BooksD[主旨大意题之确定标题。

再结合第三段中的“the people you meet and books you read.BookCrossing combines both.”

][例2] (2016·北京高考·A) December 15,2014Dear Alfred,I want to tell you how important your help is to my life.Growing up,I had people telling me I was too slow, though, with an IQ of 150+at 17,I'm anything but stupid. The fact was that I was found to have ADHD (注意力缺陷多动障碍).Anxious all the time,I was unable to keep focused for more than an hour at a time. However, when something did interest me,I could become absorbed. In high school,I became curious about the computer, and built my first website. Moreover,I completed the senior course of Computer Basics, plus five relevant precollege courses. While I was exploring my curiosity,my disease got worse.I wanted to go to college after high school, but couldn't.So,I was killing my time at home until June 2012 when I discovered the online computer courses of your training center.Since then,I have taken courses like Data Science and Advanced Mathematics.Currently,I'm learning your Probability course.I have hundreds of printer paper, covered in selfwritten notes from your videos. This has given me a purpose.Last year,I spent all my time looking for a job where, without dealing with the public,I could work alone, but still have a team to talk to.Luckily,I discoveredthe job—Data Analyst—this month and have been going full steam ahead.I want to prove that I can teach myself a respectful profession, without going to college, and be just as good as,if not better than,my competitors.Thank you. You've given me hope that I can follow my heart. For the first time,I feel good about myself because I'm doing something, not because someone told me I was doing good.I feel whole. This is why you're saving my life.Yours,Tanis 58.Tanis wrote this letter in order to .A.explain why she was interested in the computerB.share the ideas she had for her professionC.show how grateful she was to the centerD.describe the courses she had taken so farC[主旨大意题之写作目的。
