The operators are called pullers. They ride through the streets pulling passengers and goods.Unlike auto rickshaws, which burn fuel, cycle rickshaws produce no pollution. But the job of a rickshaw puller is not easy. Now, to help lighten their labor, there is the Solar-Electric Rickshaw, or Soleckshaw. This isthe product of work of several scientific, industrial and environmental agencies. An electric motor helps the operator pull a heavy load or go up a hill.Athirty-six volt (伏特)battery can carry the rickshaw forty kilometers.Top speedis fifteen kilometers an hour, and the Soleckshaw does not pollute. The goal with the new rickshaw is to increase the number of trips per day thatthe pullers can make. There is also space for advertising, a way for them to earnadditional money.India's seven to eight million pullers usually pay one-third of their earnings tothe owners of rickshaws to use them by the day.But the Center for Rural Development had the idea for a bank to help self-employed disease, scientists say.Just two or three Ecstasy tablets (药片)can permanently destroy brain cells that affect movement and reasoning, according to American research that links the drug to Parkinson's for the first time.A study by a team at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, involving squirrel monkeys and baboons (狒狒)found that both species suffered permanent damage to key cells, which are lost in Par kinson’s, after receiving three low doses (剂量)of Ecstasy at three-hour periods. The study is particularly important because baboons are one of the best animal models for the human brain.George Ricaurte, who led the research, said that the widespread abuse of drug might have caused severe damage."The most troubling result is that young adults using Ecstasy may be increasing their risk of developing Parkinsonism as they get older."Alan Leshner, a former director of the US National Institute on Drug Abuse, said, "This study emphasizes the multi-aspect damage that Ecstasy causes to users. We've long known that repeated use damages brain cells. But this study shows that even very occasional (偶尔)use can have long-lasting effects on many different brain systems. It sends an important message to young people: don't experiment with your own brain."Janet Betts, a mother whose teenage daughter Leah died after a single Ecstasy tablet in 1995, said, "This comes as no surprise. But people can't see the effects at first, and they say it won't happen to them. We'll see the symptoms later, just as we have with smoking."68.The article is intended to ____.A.explain the bad effects of drugs on people's healthB.warn young people of the risk of taking the drug EcstasyC.persuade people out of such bad habits as using drugsD.tell the links between the drug Ecstasy and the animal models69.We know from the passage that a low dose of Ecstasy ____.A.can permanently destroy one's brain cellsB.can cause serious brain damage occasionallyC.will result in immediate death after a single tablet B.the symptoms after smokingC.the damage to the brain systems D.repeated use of the drugECase for man-made canning increased in 2010London, England (CNN)——Evidence of man-made warming has increased in the past year, according to one of the world's "leading climate research centers. The UK's Met Office Hadley Center says data from a range of climate indicators continues to make a case for long-term man-made global warming." It is clear from the observational evidence across a wide range of indicators that the world is warming," Matt Palmer, an ocean expert at the Met Office, said in a statement."As well as a clear increase in air temperature observed above both the land and sea we see observations which are all in agreement with increasing greenhouse gases."The Met Officebrought together evidence from over 20 organizations worldwide.Data were taken from a variety of sources including satellites, weather balloons, ships and ocean buoys (浮标), all of which strengthen the case of human-influenced climate change.Increases were reported in sea water temperature, higher levels of humidity (湿度), rising sea levels as land-ice melts (融化), and reducing Arctic sea-ice."Our analysis confirms that the signals of warming are as strong as they ever have been.Improving our understanding of the facts that affect short and long term trends is helping us to improve our predictions of the future," Vicky Pope, the Met Office's head of climate change advice, said in a statement.Although the warming trend is continuing, there is evidence that the rate has slowed in the last ten years.Since the end of the 1970s, the rate of surface temperature warming has, on average, risen 0.16 degrees Celsius per decade, according to the Met Office. But from 2000 to 2009 that decreased to between 0.05 and 0.13 degrees Celsius, despite CO2 emissions continuing to rise.Scientists don't know yet why the slowdown has occurred.Stratospheric water vapor (a greenhouse gas)has slightly reduced in the past decade and could be a factor, scientists say.Another possible reason could be the increase in aerosols (悬浮微粒)from Asia——aerosols reflect sunlight and have a cooling effect on the Earth.72.According to the passage,____.A.the globe's surface temperature went down last yearB.air temperature doesn't increase as fast as greenhouse gasesC.the warming of the earth's surface has been still continuingD.man-made global warming will be reduced in a long term73.We can know from the passage that ____.A.the rising of sea levels is due to the higher levels of humidityB.scientists focus their attention on the data collected from the satellitesC.the prediction of the future world temperature is hard to make at presentD.in the last decade, the surface temperature has risen more slowly than before74.The underlined "emissions" in the passage probably means "____"A.burning up B.keeping up C.bringing in D.sending out 75.The slowdown of the warming trend is probably ____.A.the result of the rising of sea levels and the reduction of Arctic sea-iceB.due to the reduction of greenhouse gas and the increase of aerosols from AsiaC.proved by the evidence brought together from all over the world by Met OfficeD.because of the measures of stopping giving out CO2 into the air in the past decade第二卷(非选择题共35分)第四部分写作(共两节,满分35分)第一节短文填词(共l0小题;每小题1分,满分10分)阅读下面短文,根据以下提示:1)汉语提示,2)首字母提示,3)语境提示,在每个空格内填入一个适当的英语单词;并将该词完整地写在右边相对应的横线上。

福建省福州第三中学2023-2024学年高三上学期10月考英语试题
福建省福州第三中学2023-2024学年高三上学期10月考英语试题学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________一、阅读理解Although sisters Carmencristina Moreno and Rosemary Selzer were born 14 years apart, they both have vivid memories of growing up surrounded by music.Their dad was very fond of music and there was always music in the house. Dad composed his own songs. He would sit in the back seat of the white station wagon(旅行车)with a sheet of paper and a pencil. He would say, “Well, this is the only place I can get some peace and quiet to write.” Their father would write lyrics onto whatever paper he could find, however unconventional. “No blank cardboard was safe,” said Carmencristina. In the 1940s, music promoters invited their dad to tour South America. Carmencristina was a young child, and Rosemary wasn’t yet born. But their dad, who was orphaned (使成孤儿) at an early age, never wanted to be away from his daughter for too long. So he refused. When their dad had a pause in his music career, he picked up another job as a farm irrigator (农场灌溉工). He would come home with burst blisters. It must have been hard for him because he had to do what it took to feed the family.Their father Luis died in 1974. Rosemary wondered where her dad’s music career could have gone if he hadn’t sold his music to support his family. “He composed approximately 300 songs in his lifetime, but he gave away the songs or sold them for $50 a song,” she said. “So, I could imagine that as he got older and heard his music on the radio and all of these people getting famous, it must have been painful for him.”She asked her sister how she thought their father would want to be remembered. “Aside from being a good family man, he wanted people to know that he composed music, beautiful music,” said Carmencristina.1.What does the underlined part “No blank cardboard was safe” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Ordinary paper was unfit to be used.B.Dad composed using diverse kinds of paper.C.Dad preferred writing lyrics on blank cardboard.D.Blank cardboard was not a guarantee of a writing tool.2.Why did Dad give up his tour in South America?A.To prevent his daughters being orphaned.B.To stay with his wife for her safety.C.To make sure his child didn’t suffer.D.To avoid living a tough life.3.What do we know about the father?A.He had little expectation of fame.B.He tended to write songs while traveling.C.He went into business in the 1940s.D.He gave up a lot to support the family. In the fall of 2012, Ken Liu received an offer from a Chinese company, which was seeking an English translator for a sci-fi novel titled The Three-Body Problem. Ken was a natural choice: familiar with both the Chinese and English sci-fi wording and culture. But The Three-Body Problem was unlike anything Ken had ever read. A mind-bending story was full of heady technical passages about physics theory, mixed with profound moral questions and humanity’s place in the universe. So capturing the novel in all its complexity seemed discouraging. When the English translation of The Three-Body Problem was published, it was described as a groundbreaking work of speculative fiction(推理小说). Liu Cixin, the author of the original work said, “Usually when Chinese literature gets translated into a foreign language, it tends to lose something. But I don’t think that happened to The Three-Body Problem. I think it gained something.”Ken was born in Lanzhou, Gansu province. He was a bookworm. Books provided him with a refuge when he moved to Calif. and couldn’t speak English at the age of 11. After graduation from Harvard, he was a computer programmer, then a corporate lawyer, and later a sci-fi writer. Throughout his shifting professional journey, Ken wrote fiction continuously. Eventually, one of his works won three big awards.Ken never set out to be a translator, but a Chinese writer discovered Ken. Chen Qiufan liked reading Ken’s short stories online and kept in touch with Ken. One day, he asked Ken for his opinion on an English translation of one of his stories, which was from a translation company. Ken wasn’t impressed and offered to edit it, but ended up redoing the translation from scratch. Chen was completely moved by Ken’s spirit.Ken’s approach to translation is unorthodox(非正统的). Strict loyalty to the source material is not his chief goal, nor is producing a smooth, Americanized version. “It’s not a word-by-word recreation,” he said. “It’s about how I show the overall effect.” Rather than ignoring cultural and spoken differences that would be lost on most Western readers, he triesto stress them.4.Which of the following best describes Ken’s translation task?A.Vital.B.Demanding.C.Urgent.D.Innovative. 5.What life lesson can match Ken’s experience?A.All life is an experiment.B.Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.C.Persistence will be eventually rewarded.D.Unintentional actions bring unexpected surprises.6.What quality of Ken impressed Chen Qiufan most?A.His enthusiasm for writing.B.His effort for excellence.C.His curiosity about editing work.D.His critical comments on others’ works. 7.What is Ken’s translation style like?A.It follows the book accurately.B.It highlights cultural differences.C.It allows for the loss of something.D.It focuses on the fluency of language. In the Mediterranean Sea, a model detection system— the System for the Avoidance of Ship-Strikes with Endangered Whales(SAvEWhales) developed by Emmanuel Skarsoulis’s research team, can use the clicks of a sperm whale to determine its location in three-dimensional space. In tests using both artificial sounds and the sounds released from real sperm whales, researchers showed that SAvEWhales can provide enough notice for a nearby ship to change direction or slow down when a whale is in its path.SAvEWhales’ design is fairly simple. It has won praise from a professor at Cornell University for its getting near-real-time information that ships could use on the spot. For the model detection system, Skarsoulis’s team fixed three buoys(浮标) in a triangle one to two kilometers apart near the Hellenic Trench, a five-kilometer-deep underwater canyon(峡谷). Hanging from each buoy on a 100-meter line was a hydrophone(水中听音器) to detect underwater sound. The three hydrophones picked up information each time a nearby sperm whale clicked. Based on the reflections of the sperm whale’s clicks, the scientists built their method to calculate the depth of the clicking whale. And by running the same calculations each time a whale clicks nearby, the scientists can actively track whales. So far, the system has only experienced a two-year pilot test, and Skarsoulis and his colleagues have already identified some barriers to expanding it to a full-time monitoring system. These include analytical challenges as well as those involved in maintaining an at-seasystem. In fact, fishermen who happened to be nearby watched the first two SAvEWhales buoys that were used disappear underwater, dragged down by strong water flows. Besides, the surface reflection analysis that makes SAvEWhales so powerful can’t be used for whales that communicate through song rather than clicks, such as fin whales.Yet such monitoring is urgently needed in the Mediterranean Sea, says a whale researcher Nino Pierantonio. Perhaps the voice in your head asked: “Why me? I am not yet ready, not capable enough, or don’t have enough experience.”If you can relate, you’re among the majority of women with whom I’ve worked. I recently asked more than 120 women, from areas including the U.S., UK, Australia, Georgia, Italy, India, Jamaica, and Bermuda: If you’ve ever avoided risks, what factors and reasons contributed to this? More than 70% reported that selfdoubt, or not having enough belief in themselves, their capabilities, or their skills, was a driving factor. As one wellknown executive told me: “Every day I doubt myself. I doubt that I am good enough to be where I am.”This shouldn’t come as a surprise. We know selfdoubt is a pervasive and often paralyzing concern, particularly for women. A study by psychologists at Cornell and Washington State highlighted higher levels of selfdoubt in women. Research has also shown that women will apply for a job only if they meet all of the qualifications, while men will apply when they fulfill only 60%. Another recent study identified a considerable gender gap when it comes to selfpromotion, with women providing less favorable assessments of their own past performance and potential future ability. Ultimately, men take more chances on themselves, and that pays dividends in the long run. While this pattern of selfdoubt emerged again and again in studies, my interactions, and my client work, I also noticed another commonality: These women’s selfdoubts weren’t sabotaging their success. The vast majority of successful women leaders I’ve interviewed and coached have built exciting and satisfying careers even while facing selfdoubt. What these women also had in common is courage in the absence of confidence—a trait that is often weaponized against women and used to explain why they fail to achieve career goals. My work has found that successful women take decisive action to move forward even while grappling with fears and doubts and questioning their own “readiness”.“As women, we often feel like we have to be 100% ready in order to move forward. But, if you are 50% or 75% there, jump. Just do it,” said Megan Costello, former executive director of the Boston Mayor’s Office for Women’s Advancement.12.What is the real factor for women to escape taking on a role?A.Higher risks.B.Different beliefs.C.Inner feelings.D.Relatedexperiences.13.What is typical of women in terms of selfpromotion?A.They tend to be less optimistic.B.They prefer to be well qualified.C.They try to be favorably assessed.D.They hope to be clearly identified.14.Which can best replace the underlined word “sabotaging” in Paragraph 5?A.Promoting.B.Weakening.C.Achieving.D.Balancing. 15.How do women with selfdoubts succeed?A.They should be courageous and decisive.B.They should keep themselvesunprepared.C.They should stop questioning their careers.D.They should learn from famous executives.二、七选五Starting university can be a costly experience for most students.
