BEC中级真题详细解析:第二辑TEST 1 PART 1 Coaching1 the contact between coach and employee not solving all difficulties at work2 the discussion of how certain situations could be better handled if they occur again3 a coach encouraging an employee to apply what has been taught to routine work situations4 coaching providing new interest to individuals who are unhappy in their current positions5 coaching providing a supportive environment to discuss performance6 employees being asked to analyse themselves and practise greater self-awareness7 coaching enabling a company to respond rapidly to a lack of expertise in a certain areaCoachingACoaching involves two or more people sitting down together to talk through issues that have come up recently at work, and analysing how they were managed and how they might be dealt with more effectively on subsequent occasions. Coaching thus transfers skills and information from one person to another in an on-the-job situation so that the work experience of the coach is used to advise and guide the individual being coached. It also allows successes and failures to be evaluated in a non-threatening atmosphere.BCoaching means influencing the learner's personal development, for example his or her confidence and ambition. It can take place any time during an individual's career. Coaching is intended to assist individuals to function more effectively, and it is a powerful learning model. It begins where skills-based training ends, and helps individuals to use formally learnt knowledge in day-to-day work and management situations.Individuals being coached are in a demanding situation with their coach, which requires them to consider their own behaviour and question their reasons for doing things.CThe coach professionally assists the career development of another individual, outside the normal manager/subordinate relationship. In theory, the coaching relationship should provide answers to every problem, but in practice it falls short of this. However, it can provide a space for discussion and feedback on topics such as people management and skills, behaviour patterns, confidence-building and time management.Through coaching,an organisation can meet skills shortages, discuss targets and indicate how employees should deal with challenging situations, all at short notice.DEffective coaches are usually those who get satisfaction from the success of others and who give time to the coaching role. Giving people coaching responsibilities can support their development, either by encouraging management potential through small-scale one-to-one assignments, or by providing added job satisfaction to managers who feel they are stuck in their present jobs. A coach is also a confidential adviser, accustomed to developing positive and effective approaches to complex management, organisational and change problems.这篇文章讲的是培训(coaching)的作用。

The types of audience determine the techniques and languages they are going to use in the presentation. For example, if the speaker is faced with a group of migrant workers with poor educational background, he is supposed to use simple language with less graphs and technical words.Secondly, a good presentation depends on the support of equipment. Speakers must cooperate with the organizers to ensure that all needed equipment stands by and there should always be spare equipment in case anything goes wrong during the presentation. Meanwhile, the lighting and seating arrangement are to be fully prepared before the presentation. Moreover, to give a good presentation, the speaker is expected to have a thorough research on the topic. A good preparation will make the speaker confident of his performance, which in turnwill arouse the audience’s enthusiasm. As a matter of a fact, we talk all day, but how to talk is obviously a somewhat neglected art.To be specific, firstly, you should make sure that you call your clients at the right time, because it is impropriate, impolite and very annoying to disturb your clients when they are in the middle of something. To put it in another way, the perfect timing is the key point. Secondly, when contacting clients by telephone you should listen carefully, because one of the best ways to show your respects to your clients is to become a good listener.Thirdly, you need to have a positive attitude and to let your clients feel that you are positive and enthusiastic. Consequently, more and more managers begin to put this issue in the spotlight. In my perspective, when managing change, several factors should be taken into consideration. Without the guide of a clear objective, one will get lost in the business jungle. The second factor is communication skill. An effective communication can promote cooperation, and communication is usually considered as an inevitable way to effective management. The third one is technology and qualified personnel. They are the core competitiveness of the enterprises and they are the software and hardware that drive the enterprise to work in a full speed. Without them, it is hard to keep pace with the time. To start with, employees’ opinions are supposed to play a crucial role. Undoubtedly, we should conserve no effort to meet the needs of the employees. We can benefit a lot from this employee-oriented tactic. To be specific, we can compare notes with employees from different departments, or, alternatively, we can make them vote for a decision.Secondly, the cost of the company deserves to be taken into consideration. If there can be other more economic options, why bother to build an extra canteen? I mean, if the company can make a long term reservation with a restaurant probably, it saves time and money.Thirdly, the financial situation tends to interfere in the decision making. If building a canteen is a better choice compared with ordering foods from restaurants in the long run, we still have to consider the expenses in building the canteen--------an undergoing construction is a big deal for the company anyway. Lastly, the location of the canteen is also quite important. If you want to build a canteen, there should be space available for it.Top ic B: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN ……?Working as a teacher●Sharing expertise●Deciding responsibilities【词汇&短语】求助于resort to 零碎的piecemeal处理tackle with 前提premise倾向于apt to 灵活的策略flexible policy指派assign 唤起情绪invoke有机的,整体的organic 同时simultaneously【句型点击】The prime concern is… 首要考虑是..Given this pr emise…. 基于这样的前提Be expected to…被期待做某事,应该做某事【参考范例】When working as a teacher, the prime concern is sharing expertise. The need of the students should receive careful consideration. Through systematic training and teaching, the students should be able to resort to the professional skill of the teacher for reasonable solution of whatever problem they may come across in working experience.Secondly, the teacher is expected to decide the responsibility of his/her fellowman. In this case, it is better to tackle with the whole thing in an organic way rather than a piece meal basis. In other words, the person on the teaching position should be crystal clear of the strength and weakness of every student and assign them to the right positions based on this judgment. Given this premise, the whole team can work in an efficient way.Another crucial issue is how to monitor the students. Here we should adopt a flexible policy. It takes wisdom to let the students know that their behavior will be noticed b the supervisor and simultaneously to invoke the creative spirit out of them. In this way, we can improve the behavior pattern of the students and make full of their potentialities.Topic C: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN ……?Negotiating a contract with a customer●Customer needs●Available budget【思路点拨】【词汇&短语】可持续的sustainable 共同愿望common desire双赢win-win 建立贸易机会conclude business互惠互利mutual benefit 一致coincides with通力合作close cooperation 报价quotations最新商品价格目录表latest catalogues 履行合同observe the contract商业信誉commercial integrity 国际惯例international practices【句型点击】I have some comment on…..The products meet with great favor. How to precede with 怎样来进行How to put…. Into practice….【参考范例】If I am negotiating a contract with a customer, I will firstly take the customers’ needs into consideration. The reason is ve ry simple. It is the basis of the undergoing negotiation; we are sitting around the negotiation table because we need something from each other. It is our common desire to conclude the business. On the other hand, the success of the negotiation depends on the available budget. Without financial support, all the rounds of discussin g and bargaining won’t make any sense. That is why it is an international practice to consider about the budget first and reasonable design of the contract comes after that.Besides the above mentioned points, long-term cooperation is also an essential element. Although the well-being of our own party is the main concern of us, we should insure that the prices we offered are very favorable, or we may even make some readjustment in our offer if the customer insists. The drive behind these behaviors is that sustainable profit and win-win outcome will make sure the contract can be held good for a long term. That is why we ought to make it our permanent principle to honor the contract and maintain commercial integrity.。

What is important when...?Satisfying customers• a good after-sales team• more communication with customers参考答案:Sample A:Well, I'm very interested in this topic -- what's important when motivating staff. Personally, I think there are three main important factors: financial benefits, career development opportunities and an easy-going boss.Firstly, the financial benefits should be the most important factor. They may include good salary, bonus and other perks. As we know, most people work to live instead of working for fun. And also as the saying goes, money can make the mare go, so money is very important in motivating staff. Secondly, career development opportunities are quite important. Actually, there is nobody who does not want to be promoted. If staff cannot see any good career prospects, they will probably quit the job. Finally, an easy-going boss is also important. Nobody wants to work with a difficult boss.To sum up, financial benefits, career development opportunities and an easy-going boss are important in motivating staff.Sample B:Well, I'd like to talk about the important factors that contribute to customers' satisfaction.First of all, we need a group of excellent after-sales service team. It is true that it is not easy to meet the needs of every customer, but our responsibilities involve handling customers' complaints and trying every means to solve their problems. In order to have an efficient group of after-sales service team, we must organize some staff training courses. In addition, we need to carry out surveys on customers about whether they are satisfied with our products and in what aspects they are dissatisfied. Based on the result of the surveys, we can make improvement. In a word, more communication with customers and a good after-sales team can help improve customer service.3. 实用表达法(1)引出话题第二部分的考题一般都是以What is important when…引出的,问的是做…时要考虑的因素。

After all, in comparison with packaging, people are more sensitive to price.Last but not least, our resources are limited and some are even non-renewable. Once the products are opened up, the wrapper are useless, so it is expected that designers can develop further uses of packaging materials or at least make them environmental-friendly.第二辑Test 2Topic A: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN ……?Selecting staff for promotion●Attitude to work●Current performance【词汇&短语】空缺职位vacancy 人事部personnel行政管理部administration 公关public relations总部head office 工资wages and salaries管理技能managerial skill 职业前景career prospect人力资源部human resources 团队协作teamwork【句型点击】●常用开始语Thank you for your questionThe answer is…Let me start with….In my viewIt is very likely that….●表达观点常用句What I am thinking is….Let me make my point very clear. It is crystal clear that…..There is no doubt that…..I am into the first opinion..【句型点击】When selecting staff for promotion, several factors should be taken into consideration, to begin with, the attitude to the work is one of the most fundamental elements. I believe attitude is everything. It is not uncommon to find workers who have great talents but are reluctant to make full contribution in their position, the point is, you have to love what you are doing and you have to try your utmost and reserve no effort to do it.Secondly, current performance is also very important, because it is obvious that attitude and effort have to be measured in a certain way so that you can know everyone’s capability.Thirdly, you can’t ignore career potential and adaptability, almost in every company, we can find employees who are excellent individuals but fail to cooperate in a team, these elements are all very essential in one’s career. Admittedly, it is not very likely to find all of them in one person, and then you have to consider about the specific position and grant priority to one of them.Topic B: WHAT IS I MPORTANT WHEN ……?Considering a career change●Further study or training●Opportunities for future promotion【词汇&短语】实际工资real wages 合并merger最终目标ultimate goal 个人收入personal income坏的影响adverse effect 工资价格螺旋上升wage-price spiral精明的讨价还价交易horse-trading 无形资产intangible assets资格qualification 投资回报return on investment【句型点击】●更倾向于某一个选项I would take …….. as my priority 我会把……..作为我的首选项。

BEC中级口语第二部分素材★★★In developing new products, I think market research is very important. By carrying out market research, a company can get such information as whether there exists a niche market for a new product, and what are customers'needs and tastes for the new product, therefore, the new product will sell well when it is launched into market.Next, I think costs are also important. A product's cost determines the product's price. Other costs like for marketing, advertising and managing will also be involved in. So cutting down the unnessary costs is a crucial step. Finally, screening is also a significant factor, because it separates ideas with potential from those that cannot meet company objectives. Poor screening may lead to product failure.★★★When planning health and safety training for employees, it is important to select the right and related topics. Take chemical training as an example, relevant and important topics should be included, such as the methods used to detect the presence or release of hazardous chemicals, the physical and health problems posed by hazardous chemicals, and the ways by which employees can protect themselves from chemical dangers and so on. High topics achieve purposes. In addition to selecting topics, selecting related staff to attend is also important. If it can serve for target people and meet certain requests, the company can achieve the training purpose.Besides, the length of training and opportunity for re-training can be important as well because safety and health knowledge needs to be emphasized and reinforced from time to time, and lengthy training can be boring and have negative effects on trainees.★★★In cost management, efficiency of production is an important aspect to consider. When introducing a production line, it is important to consult an ergonomics expert and see that it's user-friendly and will not cause too much physical stress and strain. Meanwhile, workers should get fully-trained to work more efficiently on the line.It is also important to cut down the cost of raw materials, as to a large extent, it helps to determine the product prices. Cost-conscious companies always seek to work with good suppliers who can offer quality raw materials with reasonable prices. Low quality materials from suppliers are actually a waste of money.Measures should also be taken to eliminate waste. On top of that, management should develop good benefits system to boost the morale of the workers.★★★When organizing work time, time management skills are important. They are essential skills for effective people. Having clear objectives would help you concentrate on the right things which are important and urgent. In addition, keeping a diary would remind you of all essential tasks to be finished. It's a powerful method of organizing yourself and a way of reducing stress. Thus you can tackle problems in order of importance, which allows you to separate important jobs from the many time-consuming trivial ones. Apart from the two points I have mentioned, it's also important to get cooperation from those around you. Let your colleagues, spouse, family members, and others know about your efforts to manage a busy schedule, and thus you can be free from interruption.★★★In deciding packaging for a product, it's important to choose the colour, texture and design that provide the best image or appearance of the product. A firm can create desirable appearance by designing a package that conveys signals of taste and food content. Many manufactures have upgraded the packaging of their food product to convey high-quality images.Next, I think the health and safety is especially important for food product. When designing the package, we should not only put emphasis on color, size, even graphics, but also the materials of the package whether it is environmentally friendly or not and whether it will contaminate the food inside or not. Finally, I think offering consumers convenience is also important. Packaging should be designed in such as way to make it easier for consumers to open the container and enjoy the product.★★★When aiming to improve customer service, it is very important for a company to train the staff first. By inviting some experts to train the staff, it will improve staff's friendliness, the speed of service and learn to deal with customer complaints. It is also important for a company to monitor the quality service. One way of monitoring the quality of service is to conduct customer satisfaction surveys. By obtaining feedback from customers, the company will know how the business has met customer expectations.Another way to improve customer service is to offer timely service. We must provide the product precisely when it is promised and in the minimum amount of time.★★★When entertaining foreign business clients, we need, first of all, to decide on the most suitable venue for the event to take place. We had better find out in our first contact with our foreign clients if they are more of art lovers or sports fans or gourmets, and then choose the type of entertainment: whether it should be in a restaurant or in the theatre or in some other appropriate venue for the event. But all I mentioned above must base on the consideration of cultural differences. When interacting with foreign business people, problems may arise in different thought patterns, different ways of seeing the world, and different ways of decision-making. These problems are the result of cultural differences and will often lead to misunderstanding. The other important aspect for us is to have a clear plan in mind when we come to the meeting. We need to work out a list of specific business objectives to achieve. Therefore while making sure our foreign business clients enjoy themselves, we quietly and smoothly direct the meeting step by step towards our goal.。

BEC商务英语中级口语考试讨论实例(1)Your company is going to attend a trade fair in the US, and you are required to discuss what should be done as preparations in advance.A: Well, you see, our company is going to attend a trade fair in the US.B: Yeah, sounds exciting. Since we've never done that before, we need to have good preparations for the trip in advance.A: You're right. The first thing to do is of course to make travel and accommodation arrangements, such as choosing an airline offering good services and the flight of the right time so that we can arrange things well and in an effective way.B: This can be done by making several phone calls. And we have to make advance reservation with a local hotel so that the people for the trade fair can have a place to stay i mmediately after they arrive in the country.A: With early booking, we may even enjoy some discounts. And it's better to choose a hotel near the trade fair. That can save the time traveling there.B: Or we can arrange beforehand to hire a car from a local car rental company.A:In addition, it would be useful to know about some business customs in the US, including commonly accepted business practices, ways of doing business, and laws and regulations, etc.B:Yeah, especially those different from ours. Say, different ideas about punctuality. I heard that in the United States, people tend to be very time-conscious. Being late would be considered poor etiquette.A:Also in China, business transactions are often concluded by treating business partners to lavis h dinners and giving them expensive gifts, I'm afraid they seldom do it this way in the West or in the US.B:I was told that in Western countries, people attach much importance to formal agreement and contracts with detailed terms and conditions. They never feel comfortable with verbal agreements. In China, however, business is often concluded simply by verbal agreement.A: We should also learn about business customs such as the different systems of measurement. For instance, we use the day/ month/ year system for dating while the US use month/ day/ year system. And there are many other differences including topics acceptable in conversation.B: Also, Chinese businessmen tend to have business negotiations in a rather indirect manner, while American business men have a more direct style. Our people should be made to understand all these differences.A: But how to find out about all this?B: I think there are many ways to find out about these before the trip, say, we can go to the Internet, read some reference books or get tips from experienced colleagues and clients.A: Those could be effective ways. Let's get them done.BEC商务英语中级口语考试讨论实例(2)Discuss what a company should do to retain its staff. A: You see, in the past year one of our clients kept losing staff andsuffered a heavy loss. They worry a lot and turn to us. Have you got any constructive suggestions?B: Yes. Our client should first examine their staff recruiting. There must be something wrong with their recruiting practice.A: Why?B:You know, keeping staff turnover low begins with hiring staff members who are a good match for the practice and the position. So it can be beneficial for the client company to change its idea from "attracting and retaining the best employees" to "attracting and recruiting the suitable employees."A:Good idea! By recruiting the appropriate new staff, our client builds the employees' commitment and retention will necessarily follow.B: Exactly.A: Then how to recruit the right staff is crucial to our client.B:Yes. To recruit the appropriate new hires, it's important to advertise the job vacancy in the newspapers and magazines targeting at the ideal candidates.A: To ensure that a candidate's skills match the job, it's also important to limit the conditions and requirements of candidates on the job advertisement.B:Yes. Besides, it's better for our client to conduct thorough reference checks and find out why a candidate left a previous job. A:Yeah, that's important. Still there are other contributable factors that our client should consider, such as providing information of the current state of their future work environment, offering staff with proper training, talking to staff members and solving problems as they emerge. All these can be important in keeping staff turnover low.B: You are right. Furthermore, the client company should strive to provide superior leadership in their prac tice, such as keeping communication lines open, periodically taking time to examine the workplace from the employee's perspective, and continually seeking to improve it.A: Yeah, that will help to create and maintain a place where people want to work and stay. In addition, giving the employees a sense of empowerment should not be ignored.B: For example?A: Such as providing a breathing space to take risks, to use their own best judgment, and to be accountable for the decisions they've made etc.B: Yeah, that surely works.BEC商务英语中级口语考试问答实例3Time ManagementB: Yeah. I do think so. It seems that everything is in disorder here in our company these days.A: Then, what is the reason?B: Well in my opinion, obviously, it must have something to do with poor time management.A: You mean poor time management has caused all these problems. Why do you think so?B:You know, when time is not well planned within a company, people usually do not allocate blocks of time to specified tasks. That is, they do not have a definite idea of when they should complete a certain task. And...A: And, sorry to interrupt you, I think they often neglect the ordering of priorities. What I mean is that certain tasks need our prior attention. But in our company every task is treated on an equal basis, even if it is something urgent. Don't you think so?B: That's the point. So time should be planned according to the importance of the tasks we need to deal with.A:What do you think we can do so that time is managed effectively here in our company?B: You mean what procedures we can adopt to ensure that time is managed effectively?A: Sure. We have been asked to put forward some suggestions for improving the situation, right?B: Exactly. I think we've got a lot to do. The first thing we should do is that we should make all the staff members realize how important effective time management is to our company.A:Yes, I do think it is of great importance. We can give all the staff instruction in time management, especially those in managerial positions.B: Right, or maybe we can run a few training programs for them. If necessary, we may even invite some experts in this field from outside to help us.A: I agree. And perhaps another thing we can do is to make all the managers, or even every staff member, come up with a job description of their own. In this way, they can be pretty sure about what they are responsible for and what they are not.B: Good idea. And I suggest that the top managers of our company should establish a set of rules as to what kind of jobs should be given priority to. In this way, we can make sure that important tasks are dealt with first.A: I couldn't agree with you more.B: So now we can come to the conclusion: firstly, our company should run a few training programs; secondly, every staff member should write a job description of his own.A: That's it. I hope our boss will be satisfied with this.B:He wills, I'm sure.Choosing a Venue for Product Presentation选择举办产品展示会得地点Your company is considering choosing a venue for product presentation. This plays a crucial role in the commercial practice in Western world.Explain the importance of team work:Teamwork reflects the combined experiences, knowledge, intelligence and views of a group of people, so it will definitely improve the quality and efficiency of the work.If the participants worked together, it would be easy for them to come up with creative ideas. This is particularly valuable for a relatively complex work, for the people working in a team, if one of them gets stuck on a matter, others/the rest could chip in their ideas and get the problem sorted. But if you work on your own, for instance, you are the sole manager in the department. If people did not work as a team, everyone would have to wait for the decisions made by the manager and it was not easy to get people to take on responsibility for anything.A huge and complicated project is not possible to be completed/done by merely one person. For instance, 3 Gorges project-a huge amount of money, 30 million people have to emigrate to elsewhere, a lot of commercial contractsYou will get bored quickly if you work on you own. But if you work in a team…Working in a team can increase personal awareness of abilities and complementary skills in colleague. How to improve teamwork:General ideas; friendly atmosphere; not bossy; patient; good manners; modest; leadership; good interpersonal skills; variety of experienceVariety of experience and a broad horizon would help to tackle urgent matters and establish his or her personal prestige. Well-experienced staff are capable of overcoming storms and crises. On coming across problematic issues, new or inexperienced staff usually will feel depressed and even start to panic. One or a number of experienced staff will, in this kind of situation, automatically become the spiritual leaders of the team and can get the issues in question solved quickly.A wide range of experiences are important to a team member, because you never know what kind of problems might suddenly come up to you. Experiences in different fields will enhance the chance of successfully sorting out the problem with your knowledge which is based on your past experience.Personal qualities:The basis of the team work is mutual trust and friendly atmosphereGood manners, not too bossy, patient, modest, leadership, good interpersonal skills.Project Managementbec中级口语讲义2Ⅱ Presentation ExamplePART 2: Mini-presentationA: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?Selecting applicants for a jobWorking experiencePersonal qualitiesSample 1I choose topic A-what is important when selecting applicants for a job. As to this topic,as far as I am concerned, there are 3 things to consider.First, I think working experience is very important when selecting applicants. Applicants who have already had the work experience in the relevant fields will learn the new job easier and quicker. And it will also save the company a lot of training fees if the applicant has related experience.Second, we must consider the personal qualities of the applicants, such as personality and health. Companies tend to employ people whose character fits a special job. For example, consulting company tends to employ applicant who is analytical and knowledgeable, but advertising agents like their employees to be energetic and creative.Third, I believe language is of great importance when selecting applicants. Nowadays, we do business with people from all over the world. Always we buy goods from Africa, and sell our electronic product to Europe ; a foreign language especially English is needed if the company wants to expand to the world. Applicants who can speak one or more foreign languages will have a better chance to get the job.Sample 2As we all know, the criteria used by HR professionals in screening and selecting applicants normally include such factorsas working experience, personal qualities and communicative skills.Firstly, we pay a lot of attention to working experience of the applicant. A person with a solid record of related experience is more likely to fit in with a new company. Therefore he or she can be trusted to fulfill the tasks and solve the problems in a more professional and competent way.In addition to this, we also look at the personal qualities of the applicant. Do es he or she has integrity, perseverance or ‘can do' spirit? Surely any organization can benefit from the reliability, devotion and enthusiam of its employees. Finally, good communicative skills such as interpersonal skills and team spirit are also becoming an important precondition in selecting qualified employees.B: WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?Preparing for a job interviewStudying the job advertisementFinding out about the companyBefore you go for an interview, you must make preparations so as to face the interviewer with more confidence. They include studying the job advertisement, finding out about the company, preparing yourself psychologically, etc.Firstly, you should study the job advertisement carefully so that you can match your knowledge, skills and abilities with the specifications required for the post. You must assure the interviewer that you have all the qualifications required, so you are the right sort of person they are looking for.Secondly, you should know more about the company, such as its profile, structure, existing problems, requirements, campaigns and future plans. As a Chinese saying goes: “knowthe opponent and know yourself, and you can fight a hundred battles without defeat.”Finally, you should also prepare yourself psychologically and this will help you combat stress. Rehearsing the interview with your friends, for example, is a good relaxation exercise that can install confidence in you.Ⅲ Presentation Discourse Management1. Opening SentenceWell, I'd like to make a short/brief/mini/one-minute presentation on the topic…2. Body (一般讲 2-3 个要点,根据语速和知识点调整)First,…Second….Third,…3. Closing SentenceAnyway, that's why I think so.Thank you very much.Thank you for taking your time.Thank you for listening.bec中级口语讲义3Financial Benefits:Managers, company owners and supervisors have always been frustrated and bewildered by employees with little or no motivation.Staff always want reward for their contribution to the company and what they are worth. Such factors are just like market forces. The fundamental reason of looking for a job is to get pay. Staff do the job what they are paid for. However, quite often, the staff work overtime under their managers’ demand. If the company fails to give proper financial benefits staff mightsubsequently feel not being fairly treated, and therefore frustrate their enthusiasm for their work.Staff want some sort of recognition for the job that they do. Correct financial benefits plan will arouse their enthusiasm; otherwise they would feel being ignored. The job that the staff are doing is not always interesting, or the working environment may not be pleasant, or their colleagues might not be very helpful and cooperative. In this kind of situation/under the kind of circumstance, the staff would become stressful and uninterested in their job. Correct financial benefits can normally distract staff from their dissatisfaction with….Career development/structure:Job-hunting is always a two-way process. On one hand, the employees look for their ideal jobs, on the other hand the employer, at the same time, look for competitive people. An employer has a number of methods to attract the best people into its business. Such as high pay, traveling opportunities, company cars and training/career development opportunities.Good educational background is not the only element that the future employers will take into account when they look for someone in the job market. Postgraduate qualifications and professional trainings are equally or even more important than the higher education degrees. When the HR managers only have 30 seconds to go through each applicant’s CV, the sector that will catch their eyes are normally your qualification and professional training experiences, which show whether you suit their vacant positions.Nowadays, very few people would like to go for that kind of job-for-life posts. They all wish to have their jobs better andbetter. If an employee is able to get the opportunities to obtain some sort of professional training during the course of employment, this experience will definitely enhance his value in the employment market and therefore benefits his future job-hunting.So in the two-way job-seeking process, while the employer is choosing its favorite people, the wise future employee will consider the training and career development opportunities with his/her future employer and try to make himself/herself more competitive in the employment market.Ⅲ Business Dialogue1) Negotiating a Job OfferEmployer: would you consider an offer of $56,000 per year?Ms. Wilson: What kind of benefits are talking about?Employer: Our standard package includes health insurance, two weeks vacation and a company car.Ms. Wilson: Are these things negotiable?Employer: Uh…not normally. What do you have in mind ?2) Employee Pay RaiseBoss: You have done an excellent job this year and we are pleased with the results.Employee: I am glad that you have been happy with my performance.Boss: As a result of your performance, we happy to offer youthe position of manager.Employee: Does this title come with an increase in salary?bec中级口语讲义4ⅰ 、 Why take BEC exams?strong growthrigorous quality controlwide suitabilitywide business contextvalue for study and business careerinternational recognition for work and studyⅱ 、 What is International Business English?

On top of that, management should develop good benefits system to boost the morale of the workers. ★★★When organizing work time, time management skills are important. They are essential skills for effective people. Having clear objectives would help you concentrate on the right things which are important and urgent. In addition, keeping a diary would remind you of all essential tasks to be finished. It's a powerful method of organizing yourself and a way of reducing stress. Thus you can tackle problems in order of importance, which allows you to separate important jobs from the many time-consuming trivial ones.Apart from the two points I have mentioned, it's also important to get cooperation from those around you. Let your colleagues, spouse, family members, and others know about your efforts to manage a busy schedule, and thus you can be free from interruption.★★★In deciding packaging for a product, it's important to choose the colour, texture and design that provide the best image or appearance of the product.A firm can create desirable appearance by designing a package that conveys signals of taste and food content. Many manufactures have upgraded the packaging of their food product to convey high-quality images. Next, I think the health and safety is especially important for food product. One way of monitoring the quality of service is to conduct customer satisfication surveys.By obtaining feedback from customers, the companywill know how the business has met customer expectations.Another way to improve customer service is to offer timely service. Therefore while making sure our foreign business clients enjoy themselves, we quietly and smoothly direct the meeting step by step towards our goal.BEC中级口语第三部分素材Task 1A: Well, you see, our company is going to attend a trade fair in the US.B: Yeah, sounds exciting. Since we’ve never done that before, we need to have good advance preparations for the trip.A: You’re right. The first thing to do is of course to make travel and accommodation arrangements, such as choosing an airline offering good services and the flight of the right time so that we can arrange things well and in an effective way. B: This can be done by making several phone calls. And we have to make advance reservation with a local hotel so that the people for the trade fair can have a place to stay immediately after they arrive in the country.A: With early booking, we may even enjoy some discounts. And it’s better to choose a ho tel near the trade fair. That can save the time traveling there.B: Or we can arrange beforehand to hire a car from a local car rental company.A: In addition, it would be useful to know about some business customs in the US, including commonly accepted business practices, ways of doing business, and laws and regulations, etc.B: Yeah, especially those different from ours. Say, different ideas about punctuality. I heard that in the United States, people tend to be very time-conscious. Being late would be considered poor etiquette.A: Also in China, business transactions are often concluded by treating business partners to lavish dinners and giving them expensive gifts, I’m afraid they seldom do it this way in the West or in the US.B: I was told that in Western countries, people attach much importance to formal agreement and contracts with detailed terms and conditions. They never feel comfortable with verbal agreements. In China, however, business is often concluded simply by verbal agreement.A: We should also learn about business customs such as the different systems of measurement. For instance, we use the day/ month/ year system for dating while the US use month/ day/ year system. And there are many other differences including topics acceptable in conversation.B: Also, Chinese businessmen tend to have business negotiations in a rather indirect manner, while American businessmen have a more direct style. Our people should be made to understand all these differences.A: But how to find out about all this?B: I think there are many ways to find out about these before the trip, say, we can go to the Internet, read some reference books or get tips from experienced colleagues and clients.A: They could be effective ways. Let’s do them.Task 2A: You see, in the past year one of our clients kept losing staff and suffered a heavy loss. They worry a lot and turn to us. Have you got any constructive suggestions?B: Yes. Our client should first examine their staff recruiting. There must be something wrong with their recruiting practice.A: Why?B: You know, keeping staff turnover low begins with hiring staff members who are a good match for the practice and the position. So it can be beneficial for the client company to change its idea from “attracting an d retaining the best employees” to “attracting and recruiting the suitable employees.”A: Good idea! By recruiting the appropriate new staff, our client builds the employees’ commitment and retention will necessarily follow.B: Exactly.A: Then how to recruit the right staff is crucial to our client.B: Yes. To recruit the appropriate new hires, it’s important to advertise the job vacancy in the newspapers and magazines targeting at the ideal candidates.A: To ensure that a candidate’s skills match the job, it’s also important to limit the conditions and requirements of candidates on the job advertisement.B: Yes. Besides, it’s better for our client to conduct thorough reference checks and find out why a candidate left a previous job.A: Yeah, that’s important. Still there are other contributable factors that our client should consider, such as providing information of the current state of their future work environment, offering staff with proper training, talking to staff members and solving problems as they emerge. All these can be important in keeping staff turnover low.B: You are right. Furthermore, the client company should strive to provide superior leadership in their practice, such as keeping communication lines open, periodically taking time to examine the workplace from the employee’s perspective, and continually seeking to improve it.A: Yeah, that will help to create and maintain a place where people want to work and stay. In addition, giving the employees a sense of empowerment should not be ignored.B: For example?A: Such as providing a breathing space to take risks, to use their own best judgment, and to be accountable for the decisions they’ve made etc.B: Yeah, that surely works.Task 3A: Our guests are arriving at weekend for a three day visit, so let’s look at our arrangement of activities for our guests. Now, first of all, what items do you think should be included here?B: Well, as we know, they are here to investigate a possible long-term cooperation with us. So, the first thing Monday morning is to take them for a tour around our company. We should show them the best part of our company, particularly the office computer management system.A: Yes. But perhaps we should first give them a chance to see the video profile of our company before showing them around and that would give them a better idea of our unique way of operating our business.B: That’s great. I totally agree with you on that. What are we going to arrange for Monday evening? Theatre, concert, or restaurant?A: Oh, well. From the information we have gathered, they are people of very well cultured background, how about giving them some taste of Peking Opera at the Capital Theatre?B: I do not disagree, but I am afraid it shouldn’t be too long for that. There are other things I would want to bring to our attention. I mean we need to take cultural differences into consideration. I don’t think we can expect them to sit out a two hours performance that they understand practically little.A: Maybe we can arrange for half an hour of Peking opera before we take them for a late night dinner.B: Alright. That’s settled. But where do you think we should take them to for the meal?A: We should choose one of the best restaurants along the busiest street in this city where they could experience the hustle and bustle of this city.B: But there’s something else that I want to note here.I think the British are generally rather reserved people.I am afraid they would prefer not to have a too noisy and busy place for dinner.A: That’s a good point. In this case, we should book a room in a quite distinctive restaurant where we could have more privacy and at the same time enjoy the local food.B: If there is no further question, let’s get down to our preparation right now. 1.Q:What’s your name?A:My name is (Kate) (注:括号内的为参考答案)2 .Q:Where are you from?A:I come from (JiangSu Province)3. Explain why you brought one of the products.strong sense of brand loyaltyreasonable pricegood after-sales servicereliability of the productgood and consistent qualityuser-friendly designgood value for moneyin styleWhat determines the price of a product?● The price of a product is influenced by the costs. 1● This is because firms have to charge a price which is greater than costs to makea profit. 2● However in the short run a firm may sell a product at a loss. This may be to gain market share or because the product is still at the introduction phase and has high research and launch costs. 3● Overall it depends on whether we are considering a short or long term pricing policy. Firms may be willing to make a loss in the short run. It will also depend on the objectives of the firm. Some public sector organisations, e.g. may simply try to cover costs.Should firms train their employees?By training their employees firms may be able to increase their profits BECAUSE trained staff are likely to be more productive and make les mistakes. Employees might also be more motivated BECAUSE they might be able to undertake more interesting work and BECAUSE managers are showing that they value their staff (which can satisfy their esteem needs). HOWEVER training costs money and is not always successful. It can also lead to a loss of production while staff are being trained. OVERALL, management will have to weigh up the potential benefits against the costs. If, for example, the firm has the necessary resources, the training is relatively cheap and is likely to lead to significant increases in productivity and profitability the firm likely to invest in it. If, ON THE OTHER HAND, the firm lacks the necessary finance and staff already have the skills required then training is LESS LIKELY.WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?Selecting applicants for a job•Working experience•Personal qualitiesSample 1I choose topic A-what is important when selecting applicants for a job. As to this topic, as far as I am concerned, there are 3 things to consider.First, I think working experience is very important when selecting applicants. Always we buy goods from Africa, and sell our electronic product to Europe; a foreign language especially English is needed if the company wants to expand to the world. Applicants who can speak one or more foreign languages will have a better chance to get the job.Sample 2As we all know, the criteria used by HR professionals in screening and selecting applicants normally include such factors as working experience, personal qualities and communicative skills.Firstly, we pay a lot of attention to working experience of the applicant. A person with a solid record of related experience is more likely to fit in with a new company. Therefore he or she can be trusted to fulfill the tasks and solve the problems in a more professional and competent way.In addition to this, we also look at the personal qualities of the applicant. Does he or she has integrity, perseverance or ‘can do’ spirit? Surely any organization can benefit from the reliability, devotion and enthusiam of its employees. Finally, good communicative skills such as interpersonal skills and team spirit are also becoming an important precondition in selecting qualified employees.WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?Preparing for a job interview•Studying the job advertisement•Finding out about the companyBefore you go for an interview, you must make preparations so as to face the interviewer with more confidence. As a Chinese saying goes: “know the opponent and know yourself, and you can fight a hundred battles without defeat.”Finally, you should also prepare yourself psychologically and this will help you combat stress. Rehearsing the interview with your friends, for example, is a good relaxation exercise that can install confidence in you.WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?MANAGING A PROJECT●ENCOURAGING TEAMWORK●KEEPING TO SCHEDULEWHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?CHOOSING PEOPLE TO WORK IN TEAMS●VARIETY OF EXPERIENCE●PERSONAL QUALITIESExplain the importance of team work:a.Teamwork reflects the combined experiences, knowledge, intelligence andviews of a group of people, so it will definitely improve the quality and efficiency of the work.b.If the participants worked together, it would be easy for them to come upwith creative ideas. This is particularly valuable for a relatively complex work, for the people working in a team, if one of them gets stuck on a matter, others/the rest could chip in their ideas and get the problem sorted. But if you work on your own, for instance, you are the sole manager in thedepartment.c.If people did not work as a team, everyone would have to wait for the decisionsmade by the manager and it was not easy to get people to take on responsibility for anything.d. A huge and complicated project is not possible to be completed/done by merelyone person. For instance, 3 Gorges project-a huge amount of money, 30 million people have to emigrate to elsewhere, a lot of commercial contractse. You will get bored quickly if you work on you own. But if you work in a team…f.Working in a team can increase personal awareness of abilities andcomplementary skills in colleague. How to improve teamwork:General ideas; friendly atmosphere; not bossy; patient; good manners; modest; leadership; good interpersonal skills; variety of experiencea.Variety of experience and a broad horizon would help to tackle urgent mattersand establish his or her personal prestige. Well-experienced staff arecapable of overcoming storms and crises.b.On coming across problematic issues, new or inexperienced staff usually willfeel depressed and even start to panic. One or a number of experienced staff will, in this kind of situation, automatically become the spiritual leaders of the team and can get the issues in question solved quickly.c. A wide range of experiences are important to a team member, because you neverknow what kind of problems might suddenly come up to you. Experiences in different fields will enhance the chance of successfully sorting out the problem with your knowledge which is based on your past experience.Personal qualities:a.The basis of the team work is mutual trust and friendly atmosphereb.Good manners, not too bossy, patient, modest, leadership, good interpersonalskills.WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?MANAGING A PROJECT●ENCOURAGING TEAMWORK●KEEPING TO SCHEDULEKey points: Team work, time pressure (keeping to the schedule)Team work: as explained in the teamwork sectionTime pressure:a. A well-designed schedule can clarify yourself to the project. You shouldensure that you would be running before the schedule rather than after it.b.Time is always of essence for a project.c.Failure to keep to the schedule will result in/cause late completion.te completion will lead to: civil litigation, injured party will becomeentitled to claim compensation/entitled to sue the breaching company.e.When the project is being processed/in the course of carrying out the project, there will be a lot of commercial activities involved. Such as investment banks advance cash; raw material supply, planning permission,sub-contract/outsource. Failure to stick to the schedule will affect above matters.WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?DEALING WITH COMPETITION●PRICING POLICIES●ADVERTISING STRATEGIESWHAT IS IMORTANT WHEN…?SETTING PRICES FOR NEW PRODUCTS●PRODUCTION COSTS●COMPETIORS’ PRICESKey points: Pricing; Advertising; Production costs; Competitor’s price; Marketing;a wide range of services and productsPricing:a.(For a consumer): all consumers would like to go for higher quality and lessexpensive products. It is a common sense.b.(For a manager): correct pricing policies can capture a large number ofconsumers in a short period of time.c.For a newly established company: correct pricing policies are particularlyimportant for newly established businesses. The major task for them at the early stage is to draw the public attention and make their company and their brand known to the public. When a new product is put into market, there may be very few people knowing/who know about it…(e.g.Thai curry source) Com petitors’ price:a.Once a new product is put into market, it will immediately face thecompetition from rivals. The price war sometimes can be incredibly fierce and crude.petitors’ price will mirror the consumers’ attitude about certainproducts and the satisfaction about their prices.c.If you fixed the price higher than your rivals without higher quality ofservice, you might soon find yourself in an unfavorable situation.d.Correct pricing policies could also defeat some competitors in a short periodof time. For example: Safeway, Tesco price war against all small breadmanufactures. In this case, Safeway and Tesco fixed their price for 7p per loaf, which is 23p cheaper than their competitors’ offer. As a result of this, in 35 days time, most of their competitors went into liquidation.Advertising strategies:a.The fundamental task for a company is to make its products and itself knownto the public. There are many ways to achieve this, advertising is the most important one.b.Advertising through different media can cover nearly every corner in theworld. The main channels are:-TV-Radio-Internet-Newspaper-Bill Board-Poster-Magazinec.The advantage/point of advertising is not only about propagandizing yourcompany but also competing against/with your rivals. A company, throughproper advertisements, can manage to introduce the advantages of theirproducts comparing to their rivals’, and therefore convince the consumers that their products would be the right choice. For instance, Car manufactures can put in their new designs to the ads, e.g. ABS, double airbags to convince the prospective customers that their cars are safer than others.WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?MOTIVATING STAFF●FINANCIAL BENEFITS●CAREER DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIESWHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?INTRODUCING A REWARD SYSTEM FOR STAFF●PURPOSE OF THE REWARD SYSTEM●TYPES OF REWARD OFFEREDWHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?AIMING TO REDUCE STAFF TURNOVER●FINANCIAL INCENTIVES●CAREER STRUCTUREKey points: Financial benefits; Career development/structure; reduce staff turnover Financial Benefits:a.Managers, company owners and supervisors have always been frustrated andbewildered by employees with little or no motivation.b.Staff always want reward for their contribution to the company and what theyare worth. Such factors are just like market forces. The fundamental reason of looking for a job is to get pay. Staff do the job what they are paid for. However, quite often, the staff work overtime under their managers’ demand. If the company fails to give proper financial benefits staff mightsubsequently feel not being fairly treated, and therefore frustrate their enthusiasm for their work.c.Staff want some sort of recognition for the job that they do. Correctfinancial benefits plan will arouse their enthusiasm; otherwise they would feel being ignored.d.The job that the staff are doing is not always interesting, or the workingenvironment may not be pleasant, or their colleagues might not be very helpfuland cooperative. In this kind of situation/under the kind of circumstance, the staff would become stressful and uninterested in their job. Correct financial benefits can normally distract staff from their dissatisfaction with….Career development/structure:a.Job-hunting is always a two-way process. On one hand, the employees look fortheir ideal jobs, on the other hand the employer, at the same time, look for competitive people. An employer has a number of methods to attract the best people into its business. Such as high pay, traveling opportunities, company cars and training/career development opportunities.b.Good educational background is not the only element that the future employerswill take into account when they look for someone in the job market.Postgraduate qualifications and professional trainings are equally or even more important than the higher education degrees. When the HR managers only have 30 seconds to go through each applicant’s CV, the sector that will catch their eyes are normally your qualification and professional trainingexperiences, which show whether you suit their vacant positions.c.Nowadays, very few people would like to go for that kind of job-for-life posts. They all wish to have their jobs better and better. If an employee is able to get the opportunities to obtain some sort of professional training during the course of employment, this experience will definitely enhance his value in the employment market and therefore benefits his future job-hunting.d.So in the two-way job-seeking process, while the employer is choosing itsfavorite people, the wise future employee will consider the training andcareer development opportunities with his/her future employer and try to make himself/herself more competitive in the employment market.WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?RELOCATION A BUSINESS●LOCAL WORKFORCE AVAILABLE●LOCATION OF SITEWHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?CHOOSING RETAIL PREMISES TO RENT●LOCATION●LENGTH OF CONTRACTKey points: location of the premises; local workforce; rent a premisesLocal workforce:a.Might technology support and skilful workforce are the two crucial elementsleading a modern enterprises to success. So when locating a business, the management people in the business got to consider local workforce.b.Skilful workers are just like the hands of a business, they are the directcreators of company’s profits.c.The diversity of the workforce’s skills will diversify the quality of theproducts. (Swiss watch, Volkswagen cars)d.Skilful workforce is particularly important to hi-tech oriented companies. The hi-tech products require the company to maintain a strong research and development team, which are normally the more valuable assets of the company.e.When locating a business, the managers need to consider whether the localworkforce is capable of producing such a strong R&D team.f.Moreover, cheap local force will certainly reduce the production costs.(Consider why many foreign companies choose China as their manufacturing base)Location of the business site:Consider the following issues:a.Whether it is convenient and easy for raw material supply and transportingout the products.b.Whether it is easy to get access to the electricity, water, gas and othersupporting energy supplies.c.Whether it is convenient for most of staff to go to workd. The property price theree.Environmental issuesf.Planning permissiong.Tax liabilitiesThe length of the contract:a. Longer contract would cover issues in more details. The contract should cover certain matter, which are likely to incur, such as assignment, service charges, and rent review clause.MarketingWHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?AIMING TO REACH NEW MARKETS●MARKET RESEARCH●ADVERTISINGWHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?ADVERTISING A NEW PRODUCT●TARGET MARKETS●CHOICE OF MEDIAMarket research:a.Marketing is the performance of business activities that direct the flow ofgoods and services from producer to consumer or user.b.Marketing research is always the first step before the company gets into themarket.c.The fundamental goal of marketing is the satisfaction of consumer needs. Noorganization can survive for long without meeting consumer needs. People will simply not purchase a product or service that they do not need.d.Thus, any organization, if it is to be successful, must proceed from the goalof customer satisfaction and adjust its programs to deliver an offeringmeeting consumers’ needs.e. E.g. foreign medium and high range car manufacturers did not attempt to enterinto the Chinese market until recent years, because following marketresearches, they discovered that Chinese consumers, in general, could not afford to buy and maintain expensive cars. …f. E.g. Pizza, Pasta…g.Talking about Market Research✧The company has done a lot of market research for the product.✧Can you tell me how a company starts selling a new product?✧Do you often carry out/conduct market research?✧What’s objective of market research?✧One of the purpose of market research is to find out whether there’sa market for the product.✧We did a detailed market analysis.✧Market research is actually an analysis of a specific market for aparticular product.✧We have to run the market test for two months.✧We have a wide product range.✧The stock market is uncertain at the moment because interest ratesare falling.Advertising:a.Advertising is the most useful way to propagandize a company’s products andmake them known to the public. Advertising is also the way to get the products orientated. (E.g. whether the products are for female/male market, highearning people or low earning people. Sports shoes… perfume)b.When advertising a new product, it is essential to consider the target markets.Consumers’ needs in the target market.c.Choice of media: see Advertising Strategies.WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?EXHIBITING AT TRADE FAIR●QUALITY OF DISPLAY●STAFF SELECTEDKey issues: Quality of display in trade fairs; Staff selected for trade fairs; Quality of display in trade fairs:a.The quality of display will affect the public image of the company.b.Trade fairs are the irreplaceable means of propagandizing products. Theyprovide the manufacturers with the formal stages to display their products.c. A trade fair is an important link and activity in commercial sale. Beforea trade fair takes place, there normal are a lot of propagandas about it,and the organizer always tries to attract as many customers as possible to attend the trade fair.d.Consequently, a trade fair will have massive influence on the public andmarket. And most of visitors to a trade fair will be the genuine buyers or at least would like to take interests in the companies and the products on the trade fair. And therefore a high quality of display in a trade fair would be the best opportunity for an ambitious company to promote its newestproducts and built up its good image. (第7单元)WHAT IS IMPORTANT WHEN…?ENTERTAINING CLIENTS●TYPES OF ACTIVITIES●COSTTypes of Activities:a.Entertaining client is done by way of a series of activities. Such as asightseeing tour, a football match, a ballroom party, an orchestraperformance, a ballet show, a fashion show, playing tennis and a formal meal, etc.b.The activities that you choose will constitute a part of the first impressionthat you will give to your clients. So you should be careful when choosing the type of activities. You need to consider the client’s age, educational and cultural backgrounds and do some research about your clients’ characters and hobbies.c.For well-educated clients, they may expect some high class-associatedactivities, such as ballet, ballroom parties, and orchestra performances. If you fulfill their expectation/standard, your efforts will put a lot of weight on your credibility.d.For some young clients, you may wish to take them to some more fashionableactivities, such as a music bar, a pop music show, a fashion show.e.For those sporty clients-football, tennisf. However, you should always end up all kind of activities with having a formalmeal. You don’t want to talk about business with your clients in the tennis court or theatre; they are just the warming-up activities for the keymatter-business. After a whole day or a few days’ entertain ment, you may find the distance between the two sides are much narrower than the beginning, and there might be a lot of things that you both want to talk about. The costs of entertainmenta. Not always the essential thing. Depending on the nature/characteristics ofthe transaction or the size of the deal.b.Should consider the profit issue.
