You may choose a paragraph more than once. Each paragraph is marked with a letter.Answer the questions by marking the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet2.Now We’re Talking:How Voice Technology Is Transforming Computing[A]Like casting a magic spell,it lets people control the world through words alone.Any sufficiently advanced technology, noted Arthur C.Clarke,a British science-fiction writer,is indistinguishable from magic. The fast-emerging technology of voice computing proves his ing it is just like casting a spell:say a few words into the air,and a nearby device can grant your wish.[B]The Amazon Echo,a voice-driven cylindrical(圆柱体的)computer that sits on a table top and answers to the name Alexa, can all up music tracks and radio stations, tell jokes, answer trivia questions and control smart appliances;even before Christmas it was already resident in about4%of American households.V oice assistants are proliferating in smartphones, too:Apple’s Siri handles over2bn commands a week,and20%of Google searches on Android-powered handsets in America are input by voice.Dictating emails and text messages now works reliably enough to be useful. Why type when you can talk?[C]This is a huge shift.Simple though it may seem, voice has the power to transform computing,by providing a natural means of interaction.Windows, icons and menus, and then touchscreens, were welcomed as more intuitive ways to deal with computers than entering complex keyboard commands. But being able to talk to computers abolishes the need for the abstraction of a“user interface”at all.Just as mobile phones were more than existing phones without wires, and cars were more than carriages without horses,so computers without screens and keyboards have the potential to be more useful, powerful and ubiquitous than people can imagine today.[D]Voice will not wholly replace other forms of input and output.Sometimes it will remain more convenient to converse with a machine by typing rather than talking(Amazon is said to be working on an Echo device with a built-in screen). But voice is destined to account for a growing share of people’s interactions with the technology around them, from washing machines that tell you how much of the cycle they have left to virtual assistants in corporate call-centers.However,to reach its full potential, the technology requires further breakthroughs—and a resolution of the tricky questions it raises around the trade-off between convenience and privacy.[E]Alexa, what is deep learning?Computer-dictation systems have been around for years. But they were unreliable and required lengthy training to learn a specific user’s puters’new ability to recognize almost anyone’s speech dependably without training is the latest latest manifestation of the power of“deep learning”,an artificial-intelligence technique in which a software system is trained using millions of examples, usually culled(挑选)from the internet. Thanks to deep learning, machines now nearly equal humans in transcription accuracy, computerized translation systems are improving rapidly and text-to-speech systems are becoming less robotic and more puters are,in short, getting much better at handling natural language in all its forms.[F]Although deep learning means that machines can recognize speech more reliably and talk in a less stilted(不自然的)manner, they still don’t understand the meaning of language. That is the most difficult aspect of the problem and,if voice-driven computing is truly to flourish, one that must be puters must be able to understand context in order to maintain a coherent conversation about something, rather than just responding to simple,one-off voice commands,as they mostly do today(“Hey,Siri, set a timer for ten minutes”).Researchers in universities and at companies large and small are working on this very problem, building “bots”that can hold more elaborate conversations about more complex tasks, from retrieving information to advising on mortgages to making travel arrangements.(Amazon is offering a$1m prize for a bot that can converse “coherently and engagingly”for20minutes.)[G]When spells replace spelling.Consumers and regulators also have a role to play in determining how voice computing develops.Even in its current, relatively primitive form, the technology poses a dilemma:voice-driven systems are most useful when they are personalized, and are granted wide access to sources of data such as calendars, emails and other sensitive information. That raises privacy and security concerns.[H]To further complicate matters, many voice-driven devices are always listening, waiting to be activated. Some people are already concerned about the implications of internet-connected microphones listening in every room and from every smartphone. Not all audio is sent to the cloud—devices wait for a trigger phrase(“Alexa”,“OK,Google”,“Hey,Cortana”,or“Hey,Siri”)before they start relaying the user’s voice to the servers that actually handle the requests—but when it comes to storing audio,it is unclear who keeps what and when.[I]Police investigating a murder in Arkansas, which may have been overheard by an Amazon Echo, have asked the company for access to any audio that might have been captured.Amazon has refused to co-operate, arguing(with the backing of privacy advocates)that the legal status of such requests is unclear. The situation is analogous(相似)to Apple’s refusal in2016to help FBI investigators unlock a terrorist’s iPhone;both cases highlight the need for rules that specify when and what intrusions into personal privacy are justified in the interests of security.[J]Consumers will adopt voice computing even if such issues remain unresolved. In many situations voice is far more convenient and natural than any other means of communication.Uniquely,it can also be used while doing something else(driving, working out or walking down the street). It can extend the power of computing to people unable, for one reason or another,to use screens and keyboards. And it could have a dramatic impact not just on computing, but on the use of language puterized simultaneous translation could render the need to speak a foreign language irrelevant for many people;and in a world where machines can talk, minor languages may be more likely to survive. The arrival of the touchscreen was the last big shift in the way humans interact with computers. The leap to speech matters more.36.Despite the issue of invasion of privacy,voice-computing’s irresistible convenience is already receivingwide adoption.37.Conventional forms of input and output will not be entirely replaced by voice command.38.Deep learning revolutionizes speech technologies, enabling computers to process any natural language.39.Screens and keyboards of computers are not necessarily indispensable because of the invention of voicecomputing.40.Deep learning has real successes, but is not enough to understand the meaning of language.41.The convenience brought by voice computing can come at a risk of privacy or security.ws that apply to privacy and security issues for voice technology are needed in light of the two cases inAmerica.43.Despite its simple appearance, voice is capable of changing computing,by bypassing the physical realm.44.Thanks to voice computing, several devices such as smartphones have already done some tasks by voiceorders.45.To fully explore the potential of voice technology, more things need to be done to tackle the gaps betweenconvenience and privacy.Section CDirections:There are2passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C)and D).You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet2with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions46to50are based on the following passage.Police officers may hope that their presence in schools will help them build strong relationships with students, improving police-community relations over the long term. But achieving that goal may require rethinking law enforcement’s role in education,a new report suggests.Looking at federal data from the2012-2014school year, researchers at Education Week found that students in schools with at least one school resource officer(STO)were1.5times likely to be arrested than their peers in schools that did not have a police presence. The disparity is particularly stark for black students, possibly because police presence is concentrated in districts with a higher proportion of minority students.Black buys were three times more likely to be arrested at school than white boys, the report found.Rather than building relationships and improving outcomes, students who are arrested or referred to law enforcement can see a drop in school performance and are disproportionately more likely to get involved with the law again as adults, researchers say.Racial bias means that outcomes are particularly poor in communities of color.Spurred by rising fears of violent crime during the1980s and1990s,some schools began turning to police to increase safety on campus. With federal funding, their presence only grew.Following tragedies like the school shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado,an increasing number of parents called for security measures like metal detectors and armed officers.By2013-2014,44,000“school resource officers”worked in schools on a full-or part-time basis. In some cases, hiring these officers has resulted in an impressive drop in incidents. But the national picture is less positive.Particularly in schools with a high proportion of minorities, the SROs are overused, taking on disciplinary functions that classroom teachers have traditionally performed, experts say.Arresting students, rather than having a classroom teacher discipline them, brings financial and emotional costs. An American Civil Liberties Union report found that arrested students were twice as likely to drop out of high school—and for those who appeared in court, that figure doubled.Compounding the problem, the cost of employing school resource officers means many schools with a police presence are less likely to have school counselors who can keep an eye on the psychological and developmental effects of arrests on children,Education Week reported.Detaining students also drains the budget of money that could be used to educate them.So how can police officers help ensure safety without becoming disciplinarians(纪律严明者)who grease the school-to-prison pipeline?Training is key,National Association of School Resource Officers executive director Mo Canady told Education Week.SROs should see themselves not only as members of law enforcement, but also embrace their role as educators on issues like drug prevention and as informal counselors for students,Mr.Canady said.46.The federal data quoted in Paragraph Two indicate that_____.A)schools in minority district are in need of SROsB)police officers tend to arrest minority studentsC)the existence of SROs intensified campus violenceD)the SROs may have failed to function as expected47.What may be the negative effect of deploying SROs?A)It exerted more law enforcement than necessary.B)It disturbed the normal teaching practices.C)It posed risks to students’psychological health.D)It frustrated the enthusiasm of faculty members.48.What does the author think of the measure of employing SRO?A)Its real effect remains to be seen.B)It should be vigorously promoted.C)There’s still room for improvement.D)It causes more harm than good.49.What does“grease the school-to-prison pipeline”(Line2,Para.8)most probably mean?A)To effectively prevent juvenile crime.B)To lead more students to be arrested.C)To help ensure the safety on campus.D)To tighten the school-to-prison link.50.In the last paragraph, the author advises the SROs to______.A)work harder to ensure school safety B)reinforce their roles as disciplinariansC)adjust their function in education D)care more about students’mental healthPassage TwoQuestions51to55are based on the following passage.Clear Macro CEO Mike Simcock, who has25years of professional asset management experience, says he started the company to help investment managers that were drowning in a deluge of data. There has been a massive explosion in data sources, many offering the prospect of more timely information and more impactful signals. But the big data revolution is actually compounding a problem that was already there, says Simcock.Advancements in technology are making analytical processes accessible beyond the world of hedge funds(对冲基金)and CTAs(交易顾问);things like back testing tools and ways of aggregating information and visualizing information in a really efficient way.Clear Macro is building a“Wikipedia of investment strategies”.It applies strategic, tactical and systematic asset allocation strategies, alongside a combination of select data sets providing real time macro insights, from text media and now-casting to cross border central bank liquidity statistics.Simcock suggests a less is more approach to data.“We are not scraping the internet for data.We are doing aggregation in the sense that we are sourcing what we call best quality data sets for the categories of information that we think decision makers care about holistically,as well as tools to back test and gain conviction over what works and what doesn’t.“He said big data sets within the hedge fund space tend to be really focused on tactical, higher frequency, shorter term decision making, such as trying to gain an edge on payrolls or the next move in inflation,or company results. The industry is very quickly going to move much further toward data driven automated research and investible strategies.“Funds or products that are essentially driven more and more by rules, and can be delivered in different ways, whether it’s an ETF structure or simply connecting to interactive brokers.”Suddenly all sorts of owners of data are realizing the power of their data sets.“We are completely unaware of whether we use traditional data or new data.If we can demonstrate it adds some value then that can justify paying for it.”Data does not come cheap:all sorts of entities are offering to sell their data, from anywhere between£25K and£250K,and upward.“The value of data is in the eyes of the beholder,”said Simcock.“Typically I think the way that data sales work is that everything is up for negotiation,”he said.“Some of the things we are finding is a lot of the classic data sets are delivering better performance when you build them into strategies. The message I would give to someone asking how should I deal with this landscape—embrace technologies that can make your job easier and take your time.”51.It is indicated in the first two paragraphs that_____.A)Simcock himself is an investment consultantB)Simcock’s company offers timely messageC)it’s hard to make a selection in data explosionD)high-tech provides ne analytic tools for CTAs52.What can we learn about the“Wikipedia of investment strategies”?A)It makes investment suggestions.B)It sorts and analyzes timely data.C)It provides macro data reports.D)It predicts the statistics of banks.53.According to Simcock, the key to an efficient process with the data is_____.A)aggregation B)allocation C)combination D)simplification54.What opinion does Simcock express in the last paragraph?A)The price of data may soar up in the future.B)Any kind of data can be sold out nowadays.C)Classic data can provide better information.D)It’s worth time to get adapted to new tech.55.What can be the best title of this passage?A)How to Avoid Drowning in Data C)How to Apply Investment StrategiesB)How to Respond to Data Explosion D)How to a Systematic Data SetPartⅣTranslation(30minutes)Directions:For this part, you are allowed30minutes to translate a passage from Chinese intoEnglish. You should write Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B) C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage OneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage:Exchange a glance with someone, then look away. Do you realize that you have made a statement? Hold the glance for a second longer, and you have made a different statement. Hold it for 3 seconds, and the meaning has changed again. For every social situation, there is a permissible time that you can hold a person’s gaze without being intimate, rude, or aggressive. If you are on an elevator, what gaze-time are you permitted? T o answer this question, consider what you typically do. You very likely giveother passengers a quick glance to size them up(打量)and to assure them that you mean no threat. Since being close to another person signals the possibility of interaction. You need to emit a signal telling others you want to be left alone. So you cut off eye contact, what sociologist Erving Goffman (1963) calls “a dimming of the lights.” You look down at the floor, at the indicator lights, anywhere but into another passenger’s eyes. Should you break the rule against staring at a stranger on an elevator, you will make the other person exceedingly uncomfortable, and you are likely to feel a bit strange yourself. If you hold eye contact for more than 3 seconds, what are you telling another person? Much depends on the person and the situation. For instance, a man and a woman communicate interest in this manner. They typically gaze at each other for about 3 seconds at a time, then drop their eyes down for 3 seconds, before letting their eyes meet again. But if one man gives another man a 3-second-plus stare, he signals, “I know you”, “I am interested in you,” or “You look peculiar and I am curious about you.” This type of stare often produces hostile feelings.51.It can be inferred form the first paragraph that _______.A) every glance has its significanceB) staring at a person is an expression of interestC) a gaze longer than 3 seconds is unacceptableD) a glance conveys more meaning than words52.If you want to be left alone on an elevator, the best thing to do is __________.A) to look into another passenger’s eyesB) to avoid eye contact with other passengersC) to signal you are not a threat to anyoneD) to keep a distance from other passengers53.By “a dimming of the lights” (Para.1, Line 9) Erving Goffman means “_______”.A) closing one’s eyesB) turning off the lightsC) creasing to glance at othersD) reducing gaze-time to the minimum54.If one is looked at by a stranger for too long, he tends to feel ___________.A) depressedB) uneasyC) curiousD) amused55.The passage mainly discusses __________.A) the limitations of eye contactB) the exchange of ideas through eye contactC) proper behavior in situationsD) the role of eye contact in interpersonal communicationPassage TwoQuestions 56 to 60 are based on the following passage:The picnics, speeches, and parades of today’s Labor Day were all part of the first celebration, held in New York City in 1882. Its promoter was an Irish-American labor leader named peter J. McGuire. A carpenter by trade, McGuire had worked since the age of eleven, and in 1882 was president of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners (UBCJ). Approaching the City’s Central Labor Union that summer, he proposed a holiday that would applaud(赞许)”the industrial spirit-the great vital force of ev ery nation,” On September 5 his suggestion bore fruit, as an estimated 10,000 workers, many of them ignoring theirbosses’ warnings, left work to march from Union square up Fifth Avenue to 42nd Street. The event gained national attention, and by 1893 thirty states had made Labor Day an annual holiday. The quick adoption of the scheme may have indicated less about the state lawmakers’ respect for working people than about a fear of risking their anger. In the 1880s the United States was a land sharply divided between the immensely wealthy and the very poor. Henry George was accurate in describing the era as one of “progress and poverty.” In a society in which factory, owners rode in private Pullmans while ten-year-olds slaved in the mines, strong anti-capitalist feeling ran high. Demands for fundamental change were common throughout the labor press. With socialists demanding an end to “wage slavery” and anarchists(无政府主义)singing the praises of the virtues of dynamite(炸药), middle-of-the-roaders like Samuel Gompers and McGuire seemed attractively mild by comparison. One can imagine practical capitalists seeing Labor Day as a bargain: A one-day party certainly cost them less than paying their workers decent wages.56.Judging from the passage, McGuire was ____________.A) a moderate labor leaderB) an extreme-anarchist in the labor movementC) a devoted socialist fighting against exploitation of man by manD) a firm anti-capitalist demanding the elimination of wage slavery57.We can see from the first paragraph that the first Labor Day march _________.A) immediately won nationwide supportB) involved workers from 30 statesC) was opposed by many factory ownersD) was organized by the UBCJ58.Which of the following is the key factor in the immediate approval of Labor Day as a national holiday?A) The lawmakers’ respect for the workersB) The worker’s determination to have a holiday of their own.C) The socialists’ demands for thorough reformD) The politicians’ fear of the workers’ anger.59.We lean from the passage that the establishment of Labor Day ____________.A) was accepted by most bosses as a compromiseB) marked a turning point in the workers’ struggle for more rightsC) indicated the improvement of the workers’ welfareD) signaled the end of “wage slavery”60.McGuire proposed Labor Day in order to ___________.A) draw people’s attention to the striking contrast between the rich and the poorB) make prominent the important role of the working class in societyC) win for the workers the right to shorter working hoursD) expose the exploitation of the workers by their bossesPassage ThreeQuestions 61 to 65 are based on the following passage:In the old day, children were familiar with birth and death as part of life. This is perhaps the first generation of American youngsters(年轻人)who have never been close by during the birth of a baby and have never experienced the death of a family member.Nowadays when people grow old, we often send them to nursing homes. When they get sick, we transfer them to a hospital, where children are forbidden to visit terminally ill patients-even when those patients are their parents. This deprives(剥夺)the dying patient of significant family members during the last few days of his life and it deprives the children of an experience of death, which is an important learning experience. Some of my colleagues and I once interviewed and followed approximately 500 terminally ill patients in order to find out what they could teach us and how we could be of more benefit, not just to them but to the members of their families as well. We are most impressed by the fact that even those patients who were not told of their serious illness were quite aware of its potential outcome. It is important for family members, and doctors and nurses to understand the se patients’ communications in order to truly understand their needs, fears, and fantasies(幻想). Most of our patients welcomed another human being with whom they could talk openly, honestly, and frankly about their trouble. Many of them shared with us their tremendous need to be informed, to be kept up-to-date on their medical condition and to be told when the end was near. We found out that patients who had been dealt with openly and frankly were better able to cope with the approach of death and finally to reach a true stage of acceptance prior to death.61.The elders of contemporary Americans ___________.A) were often absent when a family member was born or dyingB) were quite unfamiliar with birth and deathC) usually witnessed the birth or death of a family memberD) had often experienced the fear of death as part of life62.Children in America today are denied the chance __________.A) to learn how to face deathB) to visit dying patientsC) to attend to patientsD) to have access to a hospital63.Five hundred critically ill patients were investigated with the main purpose of _________.A) observing how they reacted to the crisis of deathB) helping them and their families overcome the fear of deathC) finding out their attitude towards the approach of deathD) learning how to best help them and their families64.The need of a dying patient for company shows ____________.A) his desire for communication with other peopleB) his fear of approaching deathC) his pessimistic attitude towards his conditionD) his reluctance to part with his family65.It may be concluded from the passage that __________.A) dying patients are afraid of being told of the approach of deathB) most doctors and nurses understand what dying patients needC) dying patients should be truthfully informed of their conditionD) most patients are unable to accept death until it is obviously inevitablePassage FourQuestions 66 to 70 are based on the following passage:Faces, like fingerprints, are unique. Did you ever wonder how it is possible for us to recognize people. Even a skilled writer probably could not describe all the features that make one face different from another. Yet a very young child-or even an animal, such as a pigeon-can learn to recognize faces, we all take this ability for granted. We also tell people apart by how they behave. When we talk about someone’s personality, we mean the ways in which he or she acts, speaks thinks and feels that make that individual different from others.Like the human face, human personality is very complex. But describing someone’s personality in words is somewhat easier than describing his face. If you were asked to describe what a “nice face” looked like, you probably would have a difficult time doing so. But if you were asked to descri be a “nice person”, you might begin to think about someone who was kind considerate, friendly, warm, and so forth. There are many words to describe how a person thinks, feels and acts. Gordon Allport, an American psychologist, found nearly 18,000 English w ords characterizing differences in people’s behavior. And many of us use this information as a basis for describing, or typing, his personality. Bookworms, conservatives, military types-people are described with such terms.People have always tried to “type” each other. actors in early Greek drama wore masks to show the audience whether they played the villain’s(坏人)or the hero’s role. In fact, the words “person” and “personality” come from the Latin persona, meaning “mask”. Today, most television and movieactors do not wear masks. But we can easily tell the “good guys” from the “bad guys” because the two types differ in appearance as well as inactions.66.By using the example of finger prints, the author tells us that __________.A) people can learn to recognize facesB) people have different personalitiesC) people have difficulty in describing the features of finger printsD) people differ from each other in facial features67.According to this passage, some animals have the gift of ___________.A) telling people apart by how they behaveB) typing each otherC) telling good people from had peopleD) recognizing human faces68.Who most probably knows best how to describe people’s personality?A) The ancient Greek audienceB) The movie actorsC) PsychologistsD) The modern TV audience69.According to the passage, it is possible for us tell one type of person from another because ________.A) people differ in their behavioral and physical characteristicsB) human fingerprints provide unique informationC) peopl e’s behavior can be easily described in wordsD) human faces have complex features70.Which of the following is the major point of the passage?A) Why it is necessary to identify people’s personalityB) Why it is possible to describe peopleC) How to get to know peopleD) How best to recognize peoplePart IVTranslation(15 minutes)Directions: In this part, there are four items which you should translate into Chinese, each item consisting of one or two sentences. The chemistry major tending bar. The classics major answering phones. The Italian studies major stocking shelves atWal-Mart.Now evidence is emerging that the damage caused by the sour economy is more widespread than just a few careers led astray (偏离正轨地) or postponed. Even for college graduates — the people who were most protected from the effects of recession — the outlook is rather bleak (黯淡的).Employment rates for new college graduates have fallen sharply in the last two years, as have starting salaries for those who can find work. What’s more, only half of the jobs landed by these new graduates even require a college degree, reviving debates about whether higher education is “worth it” after all.“I have friends with the same degree as me, from a worse school, but because of who they knew or when they happened to graduate, they’re in much better jobs,”said Kyle Bishop, 23, a 2009 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh who has spent the last two years waiting tables, delivering beer, working at a bookstore andentering data. “It’s more about luck than anything else.”The average starting salary for students graduating from four-year colleges in 2009 and 2010 was $27,000, down from $30,000 for those who entered the work force in 2006 to 2008, according to a study released on Wednesday by the John J. Heldrich Center for Workforce Development at Rutgers University. That is a decline of 10 percent, even before taking inflation into account.Of course, these are the lucky ones — the graduates who found a job. Among the members of the class of 2010, just 56 percent had held at least one job by this spring, when the survey was conducted. That compares with 90 percent of graduates from the classes of 2006 and 2007. (Some have gone for further education or opted out of the labor force, while many are still trying very hard to get a job.) Even these figures understate the damage done to these workers’ careers. Many have taken jobs that do not make use of their skills; about only half of recent college graduates said that their first job required a college degree. The choice of major is quite important. Certain majors had better luck finding a job that required a college degree, according to an analysis by Andrew M. Sum, an economist at Northeastern University, of 2009 Labor Department data for collegegraduates under 25.Young graduates who majored in education and teaching or engineering were most likely to find a job requiring a college degree, while area studies majors — those who majored in Latin American studies, for example — and humanities majors were least likely to do so. Among all recent education graduates, 71.1 percent were in jobs that required a college degree; of all area studies majors, the share was 44.7percent.An analysis by The New York Times of Labor Department data about college graduates aged 25 to 34 found that the number of these workers employed in food service, restaurants and bars had risen 17 percent in 2009 from 2008, though the sample size was small. There were similar or bigger employment increases at gas stations and fuel dealers, food and alcohol stores, and taxi and limousine services. This may be a waste of a college degree, but it also displaces (使离开) the less-educated workers who would normally take these jobs.“The less schooling you had, the more likely you were to get thrown out of the labor market altogether,” said Mr. Sum, noting that unemployment rates for highschool graduates and dropouts are always much higher than those for college graduates.“There is complete displacement all the way down.”Meanwhile, college graduates are having trouble paying off student loan debt, which is at a median of $20,000 for graduates of classes 2006 to 2010.Mr. Bishop, the Pittsburgh graduate, said he is “terrified” of the effects his starter jobs might have on his ultimate career, which he hopes to be in publishing or writing. “It looks bad to have all these short-term jobs on your résumé, but you do have to pay the bills,” he said, adding that right now his student loan debtwas over $70,000.Many graduates will probably take on more student debt. More than 60 percent of those who graduated in the last five years say they will need more formal educationto be successful.“I knew there weren’t going to be many job prospects for me until I got my Ph.D.,” said Travis Patterson, 23, a 2010 graduate of California State University, Fullerton. He is working as an administrative assistant for a property management company and studying psychology in graduate school. While it may not have anything to do with his degree, “it helps pay my rent and tuition, and that’s what matters.”Going back to school does offer the possibility of joining the labor force when the economy is better. Unemployment rates are also generally lower for people withadvanced schooling. Those who do not go back to school may be on a lower-paying trajectory (道路) for years. They start at a lower salary, and they may begin their careers with employers that pay less on average or have less room for growth.“Their salary history follows them wherever they go,” said Carl Van Horn, a labor economist at Rutgers. “It’s like a parrot on your shoulder, traveling with you everywhere, constantly telling you ‘No, you can’t make that much money.’“And while young people who have survived a tough job market may shy from risks during their careers, the best way to nullify (抵消……的影响) an unlucky graduation date is to change jobs when you can, says Till von Wachter, an economist at Columbia.“If you don’t move within five years of graduating, for some reason you get stuck where you are,” Mr. von Wachter said. “By your late 20s, you’re often married, and have a family and have a house. You stop the active pattern of moving jobs.”1. Researchshows that the more communication children 47 at home the better developed theirlanguage skills will be. Children need to 48 well in order to learn well. This isespecially important for the development of native language skills since thelanguage is 49 reinforced by the child’s environment outside school. However, the 50 of communication is just as or more important than quantity alone. The language adults use helps children become aware of the many 51 aspects of objectsand events around them. For example, during a shopping trip to the market or store, adults can develop children’s concepts by bringing their attention to the shapes, colors, sounds, textures, and size of objects and events around them. Parents cando this naturally through conversation without 52 teaching. In other words, conversation with children in 53 situations expands their minds and develops theirthinking skills. In addition to conversing with children, adults can help prepare their childrento succeed in school by encouraging them to take an 54 interest in books and in theprint that surrounds them in the environment. The child’s first major 55 in schoolis learning to read. Children who come to school with knowledge that the print aroundthem carries important meanings and with an interest in books and stories willusually 56 in learning to read rapidly.Section BDirections: There are 2 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre.Passage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. In the early 20th century, a horse named Clever Hans was believed capable of counting and other impressive mental tasks. After years of great performance, psychologists discovered that though Hans was certainly clever, he was not clever in the way everyone expected. The horse was cunningly (聪明地) picking up on tiny, unintentional bodily and facial cues given out not only by his trainer, but also by the audience. Aware of the “Clever Hans” effect, Lisa Lit at the University of California, Davis, and her colleagues wondered whether the beliefs of professional dog handlers might similarly affect the outcomes of searchers for drugs and explosives. Remarkably, Dr. Lit found, they do.Dr. Lit asked 18 professional dog handlers and their dogs to complete brief searches. Before the searches, the handlers were informed that some of the search area might contain up to three target scents (气味), and also that in two cases those scents would be marked by pieces of red paper. What the handlers were not told was that none of the search areas contained the scents of either drugs or explosives.Any “detections” made by the teams thus had to be false. The findings reveal that of 144 searches, only 21 were clean (no alerts). All the others raised one alert or more. In total, the teams raised 225 alerts. While the sheer number of false alerts struck Dr. Lit as fascinating, it was where they took place that was of greatest interest. When handlers could see a red piece of paper, allegedly marking a location of interest, they were much more likely to say that their dogs signaled an alert. The human handlers were not only distracted on almost every occasion by the stimulus aimed at them, but also transmitted that distraction to their animals — who responded accordingly. To mix metaphors, the dogs were crying “wolf” at theunconscious signal of their handlers. How much that matters in the real world is unclear. But it might. If a handler, for example, unconsciously “profiled” people being sniffed (嗅) by a drug- or explosive-detecting dog at an airport, false positives could abound (大量存在). That is not only bad for innocent travelers, but might distract the team from catchingthe guilty.57. What did psychologists find out about Clever Hans?A) He was really good at counting. C) He merely responded to human signals.B) He was as clever as people claimed. D) He could understand human language.58. What did the dog handlers learn before the searches?A) There was actually no target scent in the search area.B) Each search area contained three target scents.C) Their dogs were expected to find the scents of red paper.D) Some target scents may be labeled with a special mark.59. According to Dr. Lit, the most significant about the experiment was .A) the way the dogs raised alerts C) the average time of the searchesB) the location of the false alerts D) the number of the false alerts60. What can be concluded from the experiment?A) Dogs may act in response to their handlers’ bodily signals.B) The cooperation between dogs and their handlers is key to success.C) Well-trained dogs can better understand their handlers’ signals.D) Dog handlers are more likely to be distracted than their dogs.61. How does the author see Dr. Lit’s findings?A) They may not be useful in real situations.B) They should raise our concern in real life.C) They will be widely applied in the near future.D) They should be backed up by further evidence.Passage TwoQuestions 62 to 66 are based on the following passage.Being able to multitask is hailed by most people as a welcome skill, but not according to a recent study which claims that young people between the ages of eight and eighteen of the so-called Generation M are spending a considerable amount of their time in fruitless efforts as they multitask. It argues that, in fact, these young people are frittering (浪费) away as much as half of their time as they would if they performed the very same tasks one after the other. Some young people are using an ever larger number of electronic devices as they study. At the same time they are working, young adults are also surfing on the Internet, or sending out emails to their friends, and/or answering the telephone and listening to music on their iPods. As some new device comes along, it is also added to the list rather than replacing one of the existing devices.Other research has indicated that this multitasking is even affecting the way families themselves function as young people are too wrapped up in their own isolated worlds to interact with the other people around them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house nor can they eat at the family table. All this electronic wizardry (魔力) is supposedly also seriously affecting young people’s performance at university and in the workplace. When asked about their opinions of the impact of modern gadgets (小装置) on their performance of tasks, the great majority of young people gave a favorable response. The response from the academic and business worlds was not quite as positive. The former feel that multitasking with electronic gadgets by children affects later development of study skills, resulting in a decline in the quality of writing, for example, because of the lack of concentration on task completion. They feel that many undergraduates now urgently need remedial (补救的) help with study skills. Similarly, employers feel that young people entering the workforce need to be taughtall over again. While all this may be true, it must be borne in mind that more and more is expected of young people nowadays; in fact, too much. Praise rather than criticism is duein respect of the way today’s youth are able to cope despite what the older generationthrow at them.62. What do we learn about the multitasking Generation M from a recent study?A) They are highly praised for being efficient.B) They put more energy on important tasks.C) They don’t save much time as supposed.D) They need to improve their analytical skills.63. With the introduction of new gadgets, what happens to the Generation M’s present e-devices?A) They are put aside temporarily. C) They give way to the latest gadgets.B) They are either sold or traded. D) They become part of their collection.64. A research revealed that multitasking makes the Generation M ________.A) distant to their family C) impolite and ungratefulB) selfish and possessive D) feel lonely and pitiful65. The academics feel that many undergraduates badly need to ________.A) adjust their social attitudes C) improve their study skillsB) seek psychological assistance D) take more business courses66. What does the author suggest the older generation do in dealing with themultitasking youth?A) Heighten their expectations on the youth.B) Try to be supportive and understanding.C) Encourage the youth to stick to their old habits.D) Change the way the youth use the gadgets.Part V Cloze (15 minutes)Directions: There are 20 blanks in the following passage. For questions 1-7,choose the best answer from the four choices marked A),B),C)and D). For questions 8-10,complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.Small Schools RisingThis year’s list of the top 100 high schools shows that today, those with fewer students are flourishing.Fifty years ago, they were the latest thing in educational reform:big, modern, suburban high schools with students counted in the thousands. As baby boomers(二战后婴儿潮时期出生人) came of high-school age,big schools promised economic efficiency. A greater choice of courses, and,of course, better football teams. Only years later did we understand the trade-offs this involved:the creation of excessive bureaucracies(官僚机构),the difficulty of forgingpersonal connections between teachers and students.SAT scores began dropping in 1963;today,on average,30% of students do not complete high school in four years,a figure that rises to 50% in poor urban neighborhoods. While the emphasis on teaching to higher,test-driven standards as set in No Child Left Behind resulted in significantly better performance in elementary(and some middle)schools, high schools for a variety of reasons seemed to have made little progress.Size isn’t everything, but it does matter, and the past decade has seen a noticeable countertrend toward smaller schools. This has been due ,in part ,to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has invested $1.8 billion in American high schools, helping to open about 1,000 small schools-most of them with about 400 kids each with an average enrollment of only 150 per grade,About 500 more are on the drawing board. Districts all over the country are taking notice, along with mayors in cities like New York,Chicago and San Diego. The movement includes independent public charter schools, such as No.1 BASIS in Tucson, with only 120 high-schoolers and 18 graduates this year. It embraces district-sanctioned magnet schools, such as the Talented and Gifted School, with 198 students, and the Science and Engineering Magnet,with383,which share a building in Dallas,as well as the City Honors School in Buffalo,N.Y.,which grew out of volunteer evening seminars for students. And it includes alternative schools with students selected by lottery(抽签),such as H-B Woodlawn in Arlington,Va. And most noticeable of all, there is the phenomenon of large urban and suburban high schools that have split up into smaller units of a few hundred, generally housed in the same grounds that once boasted thousands of students all marching to the same band.Hillsdale High School in San Mateo,Calif,is one of those, ranking No.423—among the top 2% in the country—on Newsweek’s annual ranking of America’s top high schools. The success of small schools is apparent in the listings. Ten years ago, when the first Newsweek listbased on college-level test participation was published, only three of the top 100 schools had graduating Classes smaller than 100 students. This year there are 22. Nearly 250 schools on the full ,Newsweek list of the top 5% of schools nationally had fewer than 200 graduates in .Although many of Hillsdale’s students came from wealthy households,by the late 1990 average test scores were sliding and it had earned the unaffectionate nickname (绰号) “Hillsjail. ” Jeff Gilbert. A Hillsdale teacher who became principal last year, remembers sitting with other teachers watching students file out of a graduation ceremony and asking one another in astonishment,“How did that student graduate?”So in Hillsdale remade itself into three “houses,” romantically named Florence,Marrakech and Kyoto. Each of the 300 arriving ninth graders are randomly(随机地) assigned to one of the houses. Where they will keep the same four core subject teachers for two years, before moving on to another for 11th and 12th grades. The closeness this system cultivates is reinforced by the institution of “advisory” classes Teachers meet with students in groups of 25,five mornings a week, for open-ended discussions of everything from homework problems to bad Saturday-night dates. The advisers also meet with students privately and stay in touch with parents,so they are deeply invested in the students’ success.“We’re constantly talking about one another’s advisers,” says English teacher Chris Crockett. “If you hear that yours isn’t doing well in math,or see them sitting outsi de the dean’s office,it’s like a personal failure.” Along with the new structure came a more demanding academic program, the percentage of freshmen taking biology jumped from 17 to 95.“It was rough for some. But by senior year,two-thirds have moved up to ph ysics,” says Gilbert “Our kids are coming to school in part because they know there are adults here who know them and care for them.”But not all schools show advances after downsizing, and it remains to be seen whether smaller schools will be a cure-all solution. The Newsweek list of top U.S. high schools was made this year,as in years past, according to a single metric, the proportion of students taking college-level exams. Over the years this system has come in for its share of criticism for its simplicity. But that is also its strength:it’s easy for readers to understand, and to do the arithmetic for their own schools if they’d like.Ranking schools is always controversial, and this year a group of 38 superintendents(地区教诲主管)from five states wrote to ask that their schools be excluded from the calculation.“It is impossible to know which high schools are ‘the best’ in the nation,”their letter read. in part. “Determining whether different schools do or don’t offer a high quality of education requires a look at man different measures, including students’ overall academic accomplishments and their subsequent performance in college. And taking into consideration the unique needs of their communities.”In the end,the superintendents agreed to provide the data we sought, which is,after all, public information. There is,in our view,no real dispute here,we are all seeking the same thing, which is schools that better serve our children and our nation by encouraging students to tackle tough subjects under the guidance of gifted teachers. And if we keep working toward that goal, someday, perhaps a list won’t be necessary.注意:此某些试题请在答卡1上作答.1. Fifty years ago. big. Modern. (15 points,30min)快读阅读:1-7:8 9 10Reading ASpecialization can be seen as a response to the problem of an increasing accumulation of scientific knowledge. By splitting up the subject matter into smaller units, one man could continue to handle the information and use it as the basis for further research. But specialization was only one of a series of related developments in science affecting the process of communication. Another was the growing professionalisation of scientific activity. No clear-cut distinction can be drawn between professionals and amateurs in science: exceptions can be found to any rule. Nevertheless, the word “amateur” does carry a connotation that the person concerned is not fully integrated into the scientific community and, in particular, may not fully share its values. The growth of specialization in the nineteenth century, with itsconsequent requirement of a longer, more complex training, implied greater problems for amateur participation in science. The trend was naturally most obvious in those areas of science based especially on a mathematical or laboratory training, and can be illustrated in terms of the development of geology in the United Kingdom.A comparison of British geological publications over the last century and a half reveals not simply an increasing emphasis on the primacy of research, but also a changing definition of what constitutes an acceptable research paper. Thus, in the nineteenth century, local geological studies represented worthwhile research in their own right; but, in the twentieth century, local studies have increasingly become acceptable to professionals only if they incorporate, and reflect on, the wider geological picture. Amateurs, on the other hand, have continued to pursue local studies in the old way. The overall result has been to make entrance to professional geological journals harder for amateurs, a result that has been reinforced by the widespread introduction of refereeing, first by national journals in the nineteenth century and then by several local geological journals in the twentieth century. As a logical consequence of this development, separate journals have now appeared aimed mainly towards either professional or amateur readership. A rather similar process of differentiation has led to professional geologists coming together nationally within one or two specific societies, whereas the amateurs have tended either to remain in local societies or to come together nationally in a different way.Although the process of professionalisation and specialization was already well under way in British geology during the nineteenth century, its full consequences were thus delayed until the twentieth century. In science generally, however, the nineteenth century must be reckoned as the crucial period for this change in the structure of science.1.By splitting up the subject matter into , one man could continue to handle the information and use it as the basis for further research.A. smaller unitsB.structure of scienceC. psychologyD. crucial period2.No clear-cut distinction can be drawn between No clear-cut distinction can be drawn between in science .A.professionals and amateursparison and British geologicalC.twentieth century and the other.D.none3.In the century, local geological studies represented worthwhile research in their own rightstB.nineteenthC.eighteenthD.5th4.The growth of specialization in the 19th century might be more clearly seen in sciences such as ________.A. sociology and chemistryB. physics and psychologyC. sociology and psychologyD. physics and chemistry5 W e can infer from the passage that ________.A. there is little distinction between specialization and professionalisationB. amateurs can compete with professionals in some areas of scienceC. professionals tend to welcome amateurs into the scientific communityD. amateurs have national academic societies but no local ones6. Hold fast to dreams or cater to the demand of society? It's really puzzling and challenging for the students to balance the relationship between dreams and reality. No consensus is reached on this issue. Some people believe that dreams are the most precious gifts given by God which should be life-long careers to work for. As the saying goes, "If you can dream it, you can do it." Whatever the situations might be, one should never give up chasing his or her dream. Others maintain that colleges shoulder the responsibility to produce qualified workers for the society, therefore when making choices, college students had better center around the demand of the society for the sake of a high-quality life in the future. As far as I'm concerned, it is advisable that college students put their dreams in the first place, which can be the refreshed driving power of the society. At the same time, they can develop other skills to survive in the society in case their majors or jobs have bleak prospects. But you must make sure that the work in your department won't be delayed.[2]As a director, you must promise that you will always be available if anything urgent happens here and people won't have any problem contacting you while you are away.W: Thank you, Mr. Henderson.[3]1 will keep my phone on 24/7 and I will be immediately back if my grandpa shows any signs of recovery.M: OK.
