Theresultsoftwosurveys，oneofprimarycarephysiciansandtheotherofpatients，foundthatwhilemostdoctorswanttohelppatientsloseweightandthinkitistheirresponsib ilitytodoso，theyoftendon’tknowwhattosay.

Sowhiledoctorsmaytellpatientstheyareoverweight，theconversationoftenendsthere，saidChristineC．Ferguson，directoroftheStop_Obesity_Alliance.Withoutbeingtoldaboutoptionsfordiabetes，shesaid.“Doctorsdon’tfeeltheyhavegoodinformationtogive.Theyfelttheydidn’thav eadequatetoolstoaddressthisproblem.”

Thelackofdialoguehurtspatients，too.Thepatientsurvey，ofover1,000adults，foundt hatmostoverweightpatientsdon’tevenknowthatthey’retooheavy.Only39percent ofoverweightpeoplesurveyedhadeverbeentoldbyahealthcareproviderthattheywereoverw eight.

Ofthosewhoweretoldtheywereobese,90percentwerealsotoldbytheirdoctorstolosewe ight，thesurveyfound.Infactmosthavetriedtoloseweightandmayhavebeensuccessfulinthepast —andmanyarestilltrying，thesurveyfound.Andmanyunderstandthatlosingevenasmallamountofweightcanhaveaposit iveimpactontheirhealthandreducetheirriskofobesity­relateddiseaseslikehypertensi onanddiabetes.

DrWilliamBestermannJr.，medicaldirectorofHolstonMedicalGroup，inKingsport，Tenn.，whichranksthe10thinobesityamongmetropolitanareasintheUnitedStates，saidthedialoguehadtobeanongoingoneandcouldnotbedroppedafterjustonementionofthep roblem.“Ifyou’retobesuccessfulwit hhelpingyourpatientsloseweight，youhavetotalktothematactuallyeveryvisitabouttheirprogress，andfindsomethingtoencouragethemandcoachthem，”hesaid.
