Theresultsoftwosurveys,oneofprimarycarephysiciansandtheotherofpatients,foundthatwhilemostdoctorswanttohelppatientsloseweightandthinkitistheirresponsib ilitytodoso,theyoftendon’tknowwhattosay.
Sowhiledoctorsmaytellpatientstheyareoverweight,theconversationoftenendsthere,saidChristineC.Ferguson,directoroftheStop_Obesity_Alliance.Withoutbeingtoldaboutoptionsfordiabetes,shesaid.“Doctorsdon’tfeeltheyhavegoodinformationtogive.Theyfelttheydidn’thav eadequatetoolstoaddressthisproblem.”
Thelackofdialoguehurtspatients,too.Thepatientsurvey,ofover1,000adults,foundt hatmostoverweightpatientsdon’tevenknowthatthey’retooheavy.Only39percent ofoverweightpeoplesurveyedhadeverbeentoldbyahealthcareproviderthattheywereoverw eight.
Ofthosewhoweretoldtheywereobese,90percentwerealsotoldbytheirdoctorstolosewe ight,thesurveyfound.Infactmosthavetriedtoloseweightandmayhavebeensuccessfulinthepast —andmanyarestilltrying,thesurveyfound.Andmanyunderstandthatlosingevenasmallamountofweightcanhaveaposit iveimpactontheirhealthandreducetheirriskofobesityrelateddiseaseslikehypertensi onanddiabetes.
DrWilliamBestermannJr.,medicaldirectorofHolstonMedicalGroup,inKingsport,Tenn.,whichranksthe10thinobesityamongmetropolitanareasintheUnitedStates,saidthedialoguehadtobeanongoingoneandcouldnotbedroppedafterjustonementionofthep roblem.“Ifyou’retobesuccessfulwit hhelpingyourpatientsloseweight,youhavetotalktothematactuallyeveryvisitabouttheirprogress,andfindsomethingtoencouragethemandcoachthem,”hesaid.
