The teachers are patient and encourage us to think critically, which has helped me gain confidence in my language skills."Next, I interviewed Wang Ming, a passionate young man who spoke with enthusiasm about the institute's role in his academic journey. "The Confucius Institute not only taught me the language, but also introduced me to a new culture and way of thinking," he said. "By comparing and contrasting Chinese and Western values, I have come to appreciate the beauty of diversity and the power of communication."Zhang Lei, a soft-spoken yet determined student, shared her thoughts on the practical applications of Englishwithin the Chinese context. 孔子学院在促进中国文化传播中起到的作用

孔子学院在促进中国文化传播中起到的作用

The role of Confucius Institute Program in the promotingChinese language and cultureConfucius Institute Program is a non-profit education organization established through the cooperation between China and other foreign countries, which aims to promote Chinese language and culture and support local Chinese [language] teaching(Chey 32). To be concrete, CIP is committed to meet the people’s need for Chinese learning worldwide, promote the people's understanding of Chinese language and culture, strengthen the education and cultural exchanges and cooperation between China and other the countries and advance the development of the world cultural diversity as the same time. Also, China government has aware of the importance of soft power and CIP is regarded as an effective tool to increase China’ soft power as it can project an image of China as a benign country. In this regard, whether CIP makes a comprehensive influence on Chinese culture around the world causes a heated debate and will be discussed in the report. On this point, different people hold different opinions. Some people state that the CIP has met with some success in promoting Chinese language and Chinese culture, while others argue that although CIP is successful in raising a positive image of the Chinese language and attracting learners, there are still obstacles and constraints to the promotion of Chinese language learning and Chinese culture (Gil 116). As far as I am concerned, I am more in favor of the argument that CIP has being doing a good job to promote the Chinese language and Chinese culture to the world. In order to prove this argument, many statistics related to CIP will be explored as well as previous studies and examples of CIP allover the world will be presented as evidences. There are three reasons why CIP is believed to be effective and efficient in promoting Chinese language and Chinese culture. To begin with, Confucius institutes are in large scale with huge influence. In addition, China government is very determined and resolved in supporting Confucius institute to promote Chinese language and Chinese culture. Since the first Confucius institute was established in Seoul, South Korea, on November 21 in 2004, the CIP has been widely spread throughout the world (Mosher). By the end of October 2010, 322 Confucius institutes and 369 Confucius classrooms, 691 in total, have been set up all over the world, located in 96 countries or regions. Confucius institutes are located in 91 countries or regions, among them, 81 in 30 Asian countries or regions, 21 in 16 African countries, 105 in 31 Europe countries, 103 in 12 America countries, 12 in 2 Oceania countries. 369 Confucius classrooms are located in the 34 countries (Confucius Institute Online, 2009). With this data, we know that Confucius Institutes have expanded into every continent and about half of the countries in the world. By the end of 2007, China has spent about 26 million US dollars on the Confucius Institute program and means to expand it into more countries or regions in the near future. It is reported that China aims to set up 1000 Confucius Institutes by 2020 (Gil 118). In addition, NOCFL (China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language), which is also known as Hanban, has built up a radio-based Confucius Institute by the joint efforts of Headquarters of Confucius Institute and China Radio International and other organizations, which provides Chinese related teaching programs in more than thirtyforeign languages (Gil 118). With the increasing of the number and the expenditures spent on CIP, it enjoys more and more attention and effects enormous influence worldwide. People all over the world become familiar with Chinese culture. As a result, Chinese language and culture become more and more popular and noticeable. Not only the scale of CIP but also the school-running pattern contributes to its success in promoting Chinese language and Chinese culture. Usually, Confucius Institutes are established through the cooperation between two academic institutes, one foreign and one Chinese and are often located on university campuses (Paradise 651; Yang 235). Confucius institutes offer courses and programs related to Chinese language learning, like Chinese language teaching at different levels, professional training for primary school, secondary school and university Chinese teachers, examinations for a certificate of Teaching Chinese, consultations for study abroad in China. Besides, according to Paradise (648), each Confucius Institute has its own unique features—some, for example, are focused on business, some concentrate on traditional Chinese medicine while some others attach more importance on traditional (Chinese) opera. In other words, although there are some principles and requirements they have to abide by, there is still big difference and flexibility when it comes to the courses to be set up. In this case, people who are focused in different fields of Chinese culture can choose the courses according to their interests and majors. Furthermore, some activities in Confucius Institutes are very appealing as they include Chinese paper cutting, dumplings and other Chinese traditional culture. There activities are more interesting than demanding, which attract and encourage foreigners to becomemore engaged in Chinese culture. To sum up, the courses set up in Confucius institute along with the activities arranged are various and interesting, which attract a lot of foreigner to take part in Chinese language and culture. In this way, Confucius Institutes become popular abroad and they are playing an important and effective role in promoting Chinese language and culture.Besides Confucius institutes , China also tries hard to raise its cultural profile in many other ways, for example, performing concerts abroad by Chinese popular singers, publishing radio and television programs outside of China, interpreting Chinese classical literature into various foreign languages, and promoting Chinese contemporary art overseas (Paradise 650). However, compared with these channels, Confucius institutes are playing a more important and effective role in boosting Chinese language and culture. In a Confucius institute, students can learn Chinese language and experience Chinese culture in a face to face way while in other channels they can only feel Chinese culture by one or two senses. In a Confucius institute, students can put forth their puzzles and questions and interact with teachers or peers. Moreover, when participating in an activity, they can practice on their own. By close contact, they are more possible to be impressed by Chinese culture because of its extensive and profound context and charm. In this way, the distance and gap between foreigners and Chinese culture is narrowed. It enables the students to experience Chinese culture firsthand. This is where the advantage of Confucius institute lies when promoting Chinese culture. Therefore, compared with other ways of promoting Chinese culture and language, Confucius institutes are doing much better work.Despite the success achieved by CIP, there are still some people who emphasize the constraints and obstacle of CIP in promoting Chinese language and Chinese culture. For instance, Gil points out that Chinese language teaching in the United States is limited by a number of resource and materials problems. Besides, high levels of demand to learn Chinese hamper foreigners to know Chinese culture (Gil 120). In other words, the difficulty in learning Chinese language stops the foreigners from learning Chinese culture. However, in fact, these obstacles are temporary and not so difficult to overcome. With the further development of CIP, the resources and materials problems will not exist any long. More equipments and teachers will be involved in this project. In addition, with the increasing popularity of Chinese language learning, classes for learners at different levels will be opened to cater beginners’ education background. Thus, it will be less demanding for foreigners to access Chinese language and culture. In conclusion, Confucius institutes all over the world have done a good job in promoting Chinese language as well as Chinese culture. The efforts have succeeded in creating a positive image of Chinese culture and attracting foreign learners. The large numbers and wide distribution of Confucius institutes enable almost half of the countries become interested in and familiar with Chinese culture. In the future, with the efforts and powerful supports of Chinese government, there will be hundreds more of Confucius institutes in dozens of countries all over the world. With its large scale, Confucius institutes have far-reaching influence around the world. In addition, the school-running pattern also contributes to the CIP’s success. By cooperation withuniversities or other academic institutes in foreign countries, Confucius institutes set up various Chinese culture related courses, activities or programs, which cater to different people’s interests and majors. Last but not least, face to face teaching process enables the students to put forward their puzzles and problems in time. Besides, they can interact with professors and classmate warmly. Confucius institutes give the participators to experience Chinese culture closely and comprehensively. In this way, Confucius institutes play a significant and irreplaceable role in promoting Chinese language and culture. Although some people argue that there are some constraints and obstacles in CIP such as lack of teachers and other material resources, no one can deny the positive effects of CIP. As discussed above, in the near future, the Confucius institutes program will be more completed and impeccable.ReferenceChey, Jocelyn. The Role of the Confucius Institute in Cultural Exchange Between China and Other Countries主持人/ Host米歇尔·康·阿克曼Michael Kahn-Ackermann歌德学院(中国)前院长,孔子学院总部特聘专家Former President of the Goethe-Institut (China), Sen-ior Consultant for the Confu-cius Institute Headquarters Vice Chairman of thePublishers Association of China嘉宾/ Guest沈卫星Ackermann: The development of Confu-cius Institutes is very worth studying. First, let's discuss what Confucius Institute means to you. Wu Shulin: The mission of the Confucius Institute at present is to promote understanding between people of different nations through Chinese language teaching and cultural exchange. Over the past 10 years, I have worked with the Confucius Institute several times in my role within the publishing sector, and I feel that the success of the Confucius Institute lies in its sincer-ity. There is an old saying in China, “The relation-ship between countries thrives when there is close friendship between its people, which is cultivated through mutual understanding.” Having mutual respect is fundamental for communication and mutual understanding, and this has always been the principal behind the Confucius Institute. Shen Weixing: I’d like to share my opinions from the perspective of a media professional. The development of the Confucius Institute in the past 10 years instils, in my mind, a vivid image of “Great Leap”. The growth of the Confucius Institute in the last 10 years closely fol-lowed China's reform and opening-up and it has achieved great things. Without China’s changes and its economic growth, it would have been impossible for the Confucius Institute to have made such progress.Stewart Johnson: I’d like to say something as a language student. Over many years, English has become an important language in interna-tional communications. However, if people only try to understand the cultures of other countries through English, there will be limitations in their understanding. The Confucius Institute provided Chinese language students with a very valuable learning platform so that we can learn Chinese and experience various Chinese cultural activities in our own country.Learning Chinese is the first step in under-standing China. If you want to have a better understanding of China, you need to experience China by yourself and the Confucius Institute is a doorway into China. The "Chinese Bridge" Chi-nese Proficiency Competition gave me the oppor-tunity to visit China for the first time. I visited several cities and even experienced the daily lives of a typical Chinese family. It is with the financial support of a Confucius Institute scholarship that I am currently able to study at T singhua University, where I have the chance to meet more Chinese people and cultivate my understanding of China. Ackermann: What do you think the Confucius Institute should focus on in the future? There are three ideas about its futureCulture is emo-tional and slow-paced, so it is no surprise that it takes time for others to under-stand and accept your culture.development: the first is to enhance the soft power of China, the second is to offer foreign-ers a comprehensive and objective view of China, and the last is to set up a platform for cross-cultural cooperation. I think that these three ideas are not necessarily mutually exclu-sive, but there are some issues. What are your opinions?Stewart Johnson: My point is quite sim-ple. These three directions are not contradictory to one another. The Confucius Institute should be a universal platform to popularize Chinese language and culture, and for people to experi-ence China. This is its task. As a disseminator of culture and a facilitator of cultural exchange, the Confucius Institute should be clear about its target audience and know what foreigners like. Just like Hollywood movies are popular around the globe because Hollywood under-stands what kinds of movies are popular with the global audience. Chinese culture is different from those of many western countries and if it is introduced in a standard and rigid form, it may not be welcomed in western cultures.Shen Weixing: First we need to under-stand the needs of Chinese language learners. People who want to learn Chinese properly usu-ally become interested in Chinese culture first, like Chinese crafts, martial arts, music, paintings and paper-cutting.My second point is about innovation. The basic framework of the Confucius Institute is now established, but from my point of view, explora-tion and innovation should be also encouraged. W e can maybe adopt the model of “one policy for each school” instead of “one model fits all”, since each country has its own specific requirements. My third point concerns culture and ideol-ogy. President Xi Jinping, in his letter congratu-lating the 10th anniversary of the Confucius Institute, said that communication and mutual learning should be encouraged. “Differentia-tion” is very important in this respect as it is not just a simple process of communication and exchange. First, we must identify which parts of our culture are superior and valuable. I am not talking about something as simple as language and crafts, but something deeper, the ideologies behind our culture. The Confucius Institute is a platform that can serve our needs for com-munication and mutual learning.Wu Shulin: At present, the focus of the Confucius Institute is mainly on the socialaspects of Chinese culture. It is good to learnabout Chinese cuisine and to sing a little PekingOpera. However, it’s necessary for there to bedeeper exploration of the ideology behind Chi-nese culture.Ackermann: The mission of the Confu-cius Institute is to facilitate Chinese teaching, and cultural exchange. How do you think theConfucius Institute should engage in culturalexchange?Shen Weixing:The Confucius Institute’smission is cultural exchange and it is an institutioncreated for this purpose. There are various levels ofcultural exchange, and a higher level of exchangemust involve a clash of ideas and mutual learn-ing, whereas, when our teachers and volunteersabroad chat with their students, it is also a form ofexchange, which can, to a certain extent, lead toconsensus in opinion. It is possible for the Confu-cius Institute to facilitate high level academic andideological exchange.Stewart Johnson:F or me, the emphasisshould lie in the method of exchange instead of thesubject of exchange. Since culture does not stay thesame, it is inevitable for Chinese culture to conflictwith other cultures. What the Confucius Instituteshould do is to get more and more people involved,so that more people can get together to explore andexperience for themselves.Ackermann: When it comes to cultural conflict, many people worry about the criticism and opposi-tion against the Confucius Institute. What are youropinions?Wu Shulin:This is a very interestingquestion. As a matter of fact, when somethingis done and there is no reaction from anyone, then it’s doomed “to be over”. If something hasimpact, there are bound to be different opinions.Shen Weixing:Culture is the accumula-tion of tradition over thousands of years, formedby a combination of historical, economic andideological factors. On the surface, culture isemotional and slow-paced, so it is no surprisethat it takes time for others to understand andaccept your culture. In my opinion, some of the opposition tothe creation of Confucius Institutes were as aresult of misunderstandings, but some couldhave been malicious in intent. W e don’t need totake action to pacify the opposition; as long aswe follow our principles, we will be ok.President Xi Jin-ping, in his lettercongratulatingthe anniversary, said that com-munication andmutual learningshould be en-couraged. “Dif-ferentiation” isvery important inthis respect as itis not just a sim-ple process ofcommunicationand exchange.。

关于中西文化交流的英语作文**Cultural Exchange between China and the West: Bridges and Fusion**In the globalized world, cultural exchange between China and the West has become increasingly frequent and diverse. This interaction not only enriches the cultural landscapes of both sides but also promotes mutual understanding and respect. This essay delves into the significance of cultural exchange, highlights its impact on society, and explores the potential for further fusion. The significance of cultural exchange lies in itsability to break down barriers and build bridges. As China and the West possess distinct historical, philosophical, and artistic traditions, cultural exchange serves as a powerful medium for understanding and appreciation. Through festivals, art exhibitions, academic conferences, and other platforms, the rich heritages of both cultures are introduced to the other, fostering a sense of curiosity and respect. For instance, the increasing popularity of Confucius Institutes in Western countries has facilitated the dissemination of Chinese culture and language, whilethe interest in yoga and traditional Chinese medicine in China reflects the influence of Western culture. The impact of cultural exchange on society is profound. It enhances cultural diversity, stimulates creativity, and promotes social progress. By integrating different cultural elements, society becomes more inclusive and dynamic. For instance, the blending of Western music and Chinese instruments has created a unique musical genre that appeals to a wide audience. Similarly, the fusion of Western fashion and Chinese aesthetics has given rise to a new trend in global fashion. However, cultural exchange also poses challenges, such as misunderstandings and conflicts. Differences in values, beliefs, and customs can sometimes lead to misunderstandings and even conflicts. It is, therefore, crucial to maintain an open and inclusive attitude in cultural exchange. By respecting and understanding the other culture, we can overcome differences and achieve true fusion. The potential for further fusion in cultural exchange is immense. As globalization continues to deepen, the needfor cross-cultural understanding and cooperation becomes increasingly urgent. By fostering cultural exchange and fusion, we can build a more harmonious and inclusive world. Future cultural exchanges should focus on promoting mutual understanding, enhancing cultural diversity, and fostering creative fusion. In conclusion, cultural exchange between China and the West is a vital process that enriches both cultures and society. It builds bridges, enhances diversity, and promotes fusion. However, to achieve true fusion, we must maintain an open and inclusive attitude, respecting and understanding the other culture. Only then can we create a world where different cultures coexist harmoniously and contribute to global progress.**中西文化交流:桥梁与融合**在全球化的世界里,中西文化交流变得日益频繁和多样。
