英语论文-从中英文化差异谈英语隐喻的汉译

从中英文化差异谈英语隐喻的汉译[Abstract] In recent years, more and more scholars have made researches on metaphor and an “upsurge of metaphor” has been formed gradually in modern society. The studies on metaphor in foreign countries have developed a complete system, which is typically represented by George Lakeoff and Mark Johnson. And the studies on metaphor in China are also influenced by the two. However, if surveying these research achievements, we will easily find that few of them study the translation of metaphor from English into Chinese. Moreover, most traditional theorists believe that metaphor is only a figure of speech and belongs to the category of linguistics. But in fact, metaphor is not only a linguistic phenomenon, but also a cultural and cognitive phenomenon. This thesis breaks these restrictions and try to research into the translation of metaphor from English into Chinese from the perspective of cultural differences between Chinese and English. The whole thesis is divided into five parts. The first part is an introduction. Based on the new belief that metaphor is a cultural and cognitive phenomenon, this part states the significance of studying metaphor from the cultural perspective. The second part focuses on the analysis of the close interrelations between language, culture and translation. The third part introduces some major factors about metaphor, such as its definitions, characteristics and classification. The fourth part emphatically illustrates the approaches to the translation of metaphor from English into Chinese in terms of different corresponding relations between Chinese and English. The last part summarizes the main points of this thesis.[Key Words] metaphor; translation; cultural differences; cultural connotations; corresponding relation【摘要】近年来,越来越多的学者对隐喻进行了研究,在现代社会逐渐形成了一股“隐喻热”。

Culture Differences and TranslationAbstractInterlingual communication is actually intercultural communication, Language is part of the culture of a people and the chief way by which the members of a society communicate。

Basing on these points, this article gives examples to show the facts that there exists in translation semantic correspondence and semantic zero between different languages and different cultures. When we do translating we should try to make up semantic zero caused by the culture. 1. What is A Good TranslationTranslation is, in fact, a converting process. Theoretically, a good translation should give its reader the same conception as what a native reader gets from the original.Nida[1] remarked that how to determine a good translation is the response of the receptor to the translated message, and this message must then be compared with the way in which the original receptors presumably reacted to the message when it was given in its original setting.Jakobson[2]held the view that translation does not just mean the change of symbols into another language, but it is a process of information substitution. The task of a translator is to translate the information he receives into symbols which he will send out.Catford[3] explained that in translation there is no meaning equivalence, but just the signifier equivalence. Because of the differences between the original language and the target language, there exists the translation equivalence[4]limitedness. This limitedness is not only manifested in the meaning of words, grammatical features, but also manifested in cultural differences more seriously.2. Culture and LanguagePerhaps culture is one of the most difficult terms to define. Different people in accordance with their different specialt ies have given different definitions. Eshleman says “The term …culture‟ means different things to different people.” In the minds of many people, it is associated with such activities as attending the opera, listening to classical music and going to art museums. As used by sociologists and cultural anthropologists, however culture has a different meaning. To sociologists, a culture is a system of ideas, values, beliefs, knowledge, norms, customs and technology shared by almost everyone in a particular society. A culture is a societies system of common heritage and each of us has culture. We express our culture continuously in our dress, food, work, language and other activities. What Eshleman says gives a definition of culture. To put it simply, culture means the total way of life of a people.Language does not develop in empty space[1]. Language is a part of culture, perhaps best defined as “the totality of beliefs and practices of a society”. These beliefs may be further described as consisting of knowledge, patterns of reasoning, and sets of values. A language, therefore, is both a part of culture and a medium through which the other parts of culture are expressed[5]. This makes language the distinctive feature of human society, something in which immigration officials put more trust than in documentation. Papers can be readily falsified, but not accents. But language is also indispensable for the functioning of a culture and for transmitting it to succeeding generations. That is to say, language plays a very important role in culture. Without language, culture would not be possible. On the other hand, language is influenced and shaped by culture. Language can not exist without culture. Therefore, language and culture are inseparable.3. Culture and TranslationTranslation means intercultural communication by means of which one culture can be transmitted into another, so the cultural special characteristics unavoidably influence translation. The equivalence limitedness of the translation between the original language and the target language is almost caused by the differences between the two cultures and how to convey the cultural meaning is often the difficulty of a translation.Different languages are bound to adopt different meaningful devices to show their cultures in order to reflect their national consciousness and cultural tradition. The research of the cultural features embodies rich contents. According to the research of some scholars, the cultural features of language include:a. ecology,b. material culture,c. social culture,d. religious culture,e. linguistic culture. [6]Take English and Chinese for example: in Britain, the weather changes a lot, and so people have a special feeling for weather. “Lovely day, isn‟t it ?” becomes the most conven ient and safe greeting. In china, the problem of daily bread has been the subject people have been concerned with. In Western culture, there are many Gods, such as Jesus, Apollo, Jupiter, while in China, we have “盘古”, “嫦娥”, “牛郎”, etc. English people would say “as poor as a church mouse” , but in Chinese we have “穷的像叫化子”。

英语论文-从文化翻译观看汉语习语的英译

英语论文-从文化翻译观看汉语习语的英译

从文化翻译观看汉语习语的英译[Abstract] Domestication and foreignization are the terms brought up by an American scholarL.Venuti to describe the two different translation strategies. The former refers to translation in which a transparent, fluent style is adopted in order to minimize the strangeness of the foreign text for target language readers, while the latter designates the type of translation in which a target text deliberately breaks target conventions by retaining something of the foreignness of the source text. Translation, generally speaking, is not only a transition between different languages, but also transferring information of culture in the source language to that in the target language. And the nature of translation is cultural communication. Since 1980s, many scholars put forward their own opinions upon domestication and foreignization under the light of cultural translation. In their opinion, the fundamental task of translation is to transfer the original contents and cultures completely into the target language. During translation, translators should consider not only differences between languages but also those between cultures. Therefore, translators should put more emphasis on foreignization. Take Chinese idioms for example. Since the exchanges among different countries and regions become more and more frequent, translators should put more emphasis on foreignization in translating Chinese idioms into English. During translation, translators should facsimile as much as possible the cultural features and connotations of Chinese idioms. In this way, English people can know more and better about China and really contact with the sophisticated Chinese culture. Meanwhile, to some extent, foreignization can help to spread unique Chinese cultural message and even help to enhance cultural communication between China and foreign countries.[Key Words] domestication; foreignization; cultural translation theory; Chinese idioms【摘要】归化与异化是两种不同的翻译策略。

Numbers serve the same calculating function in both Chinese and English. But because of the cultural diversity found in the national psychology, religious belief and mythology, numbers are endowed with abundant cultural connotations and associations. And both Chinese and English people show different cults, taboos and connotations towards the different or identical numbers so as to generate their own numeral cultures.

Abstract: The paper studies the theoretical basis of the translation of culture by exploring the relation between culture, language and translation. The translation of culture is discussed in the broad context of research on culture. This includes an analysis of the surface and deep structuresof culture and language, and the examination of the internal contact between culture and translation as well as the objective laws pertaining to their interaction. Facsimile of culture refers to the basic criterion of translation, one which requires that the meaning, form and style of the source language be precisely expressed in the translation from the angle of culture. In addition, the paper explores the extent to which a facsimile of culture could be achieved in translation.

如果将这句话译成―She doesn‘t take after your side of the family, Grannie. She‘s more like a Jia.‖这样便有贬损贾母娘家之嫌。

谙熟中国传统的杨戴伉俪将这句话译为―She doesn‘t take after her father, son-in-law of our old Ancestress, but looks more like a Jia.‖该译文使凤姐的言外之意表达得贴切到位,把中国这种封建家庭的传统意识忠实地传达给了读者。

有时即便对某成语典故的文化含义有所了解,但在翻译中不能根据语境灵活处理,也有可能达不到―传真‖的效果。

比如―a dog in the manger‖常被直译为―狗占马槽‖,但用在下面的两例中似乎就不合适了。

例一:Let m e have the skates. You don‘t know how to skate. Don‘t be a dog in the manger.译文:把冰鞋给我,你不会滑冰,不要狗占马槽。

(此句中划线部分应该译成―不要占着茅坑不拉屎‖为妥。

)例二:There you are the dog in the manger! You won‘t let him discuss you affairs, and you are annoyed when he talks about his own.

He made you a highway to my bed, But I, amaid, die maiden-widowed.

又如中国成语―知子莫如父‖与美国的成语―It is a wise father that knows his child‖似乎形式与意义上都很相近,其实涵义相反。

汉语强调父亲最了解孩子:英语却用―It is (a wise father) that…‖这种句型来反衬即使父亲也不一定了解孩子。

再看下面的谚语:The nearer the bone, the sweeter the meat. 有人把它译成―越是贴骨的肉越香‖,那就只会使人想到作为食品的肉类。

这仅是对字面表层含义的理解,它真正的喻义是―slim people are more attractive than fat people.‖请看下面的例句:A little skinny … for my taste, but like my ol‘ dady used to say; the closer the bone, the sweeter the meat.

He (Prebel) looked at the clock. The big second band was sweeping down like a guillotine. (Pat Frank) 此例中,秒针与铡刀在外在相似点在于其下落迅速,内在相似点在于两物——时间和铡刀——同样无情,正在逝去,而他(Preble) 应下决心的时刻却在一秒一秒地逼近。

又如:Beauty is but flower, which wrinkles will devour。

外观上,―beauty‖和―flower‖两者都很美,但最终都会被吞噬,本质上两者具有mortality(必死性)这一特点。
