Part v Translation (20marks)Section A (10 mark)Translate the underlined sentences in the following passage into Chinese. Remember to write the answers on the answer sheet.A soaring dropout rate is causing the United Stated to lose ground educationally to rivals abroad and is trapping millions of young American at the very margins of the economy. (76)The Obama administration acknowledges the problems in its new budget, which includes a $50 million prevention programme, but solving this problem will require a lot more money and a comprehensive national strategy. The alarming scope of the dropout crisis is laid out by the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University in Boston and the Alternative Schools Network in Chicago. (77)Their study, which examines data from the 12 largest states, finds that 16 percent of the ages of 16 to 24 have dropped out.(78) The problem is especially pronounced among men, who make up more than 60 percent of those who change school nationally. The dropout problem hits minorities really hard.(79) Many of this country’s large urban high schools are rightly called ―dropout factories‖ because more students leave school than graduate. According to the study, state dropout rates are highest in the South, where Gerorgia (22.1 percent), Florida (20.1 percent) and Texas (18.5percent) lead the way.(80) The dropout crisis presents a clear danger to national prosperity, but at the moment, states and localities are struggling to contain it with little help or guidance from the federal government. Congress, which is just waking up to this issue, can improve the situation by the putting its money and muscle behind proven programmes that have been shown to re-engage young people who have dropped out, and that keep at-risk children on track to complete their educations.Section B (10 marks)Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in brackets. Remember to write the answers on the answer sheet.81.

1Here's an essay explaining the Chinese Culture Knowledge Competition in English, written from the perspective of an elementary school student (around 2000 words):My School's Cool Chinese Culture Contest!Hey there, friends! You won't believe the awesome thing happening at my school. We're having a super cool Chinese Culture Knowledge Competition, and I'm so pumped to tell you all about it!First things first, what's a "Chinese Culture Knowledge Competition," you ask? Well, it's like a giant quiz show, but instead of testing us on boring stuff like math or science, it's all about the fantastic traditions, history, and customs of China!Sounds pretty neat, right? I mean, who doesn't love learning about ancient warriors, mythical creatures, and tasty dumplings? Count me in!Our teachers say this competition is a great way for us to learn more about our amazing Chinese heritage. And let me tell you, there's so much to discover!Just think about it – China has a mind-blowing 5,000 years of history! That's like, a gazillion years ago! Can you imagine all the incredible stories and legends that have been passed down through the generations?I've been studying like crazy for the competition. Did you know that the Great Wall of China is so massive that it's even visible from space? How cool is that? And get this – it stretches for over 13,000 miles! That's like walking from my house to the moon and back... like, a hundred times! But that's just the tip of the iceberg! There are so many fascinating things to learn about Chinese culture. For example, did you know that Chinese New Year is celebrated with dragons? Not real ones, of course (although that would be awesome!). These are huge, colorful dragon puppets that people carry through the streets during the celebrations. They're supposed to bring good luck and scare away evil spirits. Talk about an epic party! And let's not forget about all the delicious Chinese foods we'll get to learn about. Dumplings, noodles, and dim sum, oh my! My mouth is watering just thinking about it. I can't wait to impress my friends with my knowledge of mouth-watering delicacies like Peking duck and xiaolongbao (those are steamed soup dumplings, in case you didn't know). But it's not just about the yummy grub and cool traditions. We'll also be learning about important historical figures, like the legendary philosophers Confucius and Lao Tzu. These guys were like, the ultimate wise men of their time, teaching people about kindness, respect, and living a good life. And let's not forget about the amazing inventions that came from ancient China! Things like paper, the compass, and even fireworks were all created by those brilliant Chinese minds. Imagine a world without fireworks on the Fourth of July or New Year's Eve – no thanks!Speaking of inventions, did you know that Chinese people were the first to develop a written language? It's called "Chinese characters," and each one represents a whole word or idea. Talk about efficient writing! No more wasting time spelling out every single letter like we do in English. But wait, there's more! We'll also be learning about the beautiful traditional arts of China, like calligraphy (that's fancy writing), painting, and even martial arts like kung fu. Can you imagine being able to write your name in those gorgeous, flowing Chinese characters? Or better yet, kicking some serious butt like a true kung fu master? Sign me up!Now, I know what you're thinking – this all sounds like a lot to learn. And you're right, it is! But that's what makes it so exciting. It's like embarking on an epic adventure, uncovering the secrets of one of the world's oldest and richest cultures. And the best part? We get to compete against other schools in our area! It's like a friendly battle of wits and cultural knowledge. Who will reign supreme as the ultimate Chinese culture expert? Only time will tell! But even if my team doesn't win, I know I'll walk away with a head full of amazing new knowledge and a heart bursting with pride for my Chinese heritage. Plus, I'll have a ton of fun facts to share with my friends and family. Can you imagine their faces when I start rattling off the names of ancient Chinese dynasties or the ingredients in a traditional hot pot? They'll be so impressed! So, what do you say, friends? Are you as excited as I am about this Chinese Culture Knowledge Competition? If not, you should be! It's going to be an absolute blast, and I can't wait to soak up every bit of knowledge like a sponge.Who knows, maybe one day I'll be the one teaching others about the wonders of Chinese culture. But for now, it's time to hit the books and study, study, study!Wish me luck, and get ready to be amazed by all the incredible things I'll learn. This is going to be an adventure like no other, and I can't wait to share it with you!篇2The Awesome Chinese Culture CompetitionHey friends! I'm super excited to tell you about this really cool thing called the Chinese Culture Knowledge Competition. It's a huge event where kids from all across China test their smarts on everything related to Chinese culture. Sounds pretty awesome, right? The competition has different levels for elementary, middle and high school students. Even little guys like us in elementary school can join in on the fun! There are competitions held in eachprovince and the winners from those go on to the national finals in Beijing. Just imagine getting to travel to the capital and see all the amazing sights! So what kind of stuff do you need to know for this competition? Well, it covers a really wide range of topics related to Chinese culture and history. You'll need to learn about ancient philosophers and their teachings, like Confucius and his big ideas on how people should behave. There are questions on famous writers and poets from long ago too, like Li Bai whose beautiful poems make me dream of misty mountains and glittering rivers.Another big part is about the incredibly old and rich history of China, from powerful dynasties to heroic legends and folktales. You could get asked about the Terracotta Warriors guarding the tomb of the first Emperor Qin Shi Huang, or the brave Mulan who took her father's place in the army just like in the Disney movie! How cool would it be to know the real stories behind things like that? Then there's the category on Chinese festivals and customs. You'll learn the reasons behind celebrating things like Chinese New Year, when families get together for a huge feast and kids receive red envelopes with money. I especially love learning about the different interesting traditions from all the minoritygroups in China, like the Dai people's Water Splashing Festival where everyone throws water at each other for fun!Geography is covered too, like studying the major rivers and mountain ranges of our vast country. You could get quizzed on the soaring peaks of the Himalayas or the mighty Yangtze, Asia's longest river. China is so enormous there are endless landforms and places to learn about! My personal favorite part is the arts and crafts section. You have to know about beautiful ancient arts like calligraphy, painting, music, and things like jade carving. Just picture the sweeping brush strokes of inky black characters on delicate paper scrolls. Or the pretty ceramic glazes and patterns of famous blue-and-white porcelain vases. Chinese culture has created so much amazing art over thousands of years.Does learning about all this cool stuff sound fun or what? You get to dive deep into the rich heritage and traditions that make China so special. Plus, you'll feel really smart knowing details that even some adults don't! It takes a ton of hard work studying all the required books and materials. But it's totally worth it for a chance at winning prizes and being celebrated as a culture expert. The absolute best part is the pride you feel for your ancient homeland when you learn about its glorious history and customs.I always walk a little taller after reading about legendary rulers and heroes who did such amazing things. It makes me feel connected to this beautiful country and its fascinating culture that stretches back over 5,000 years! What do you think? The Chinese Culture Knowledge Competition looks like an awesome way to expand your brain while having a blast discovering the wonders of our ancestry. I really want to enter and see how much I can learn. If you have as much of a passion for our heritage as me, then you'll definitely want to give this competition a try too. Let's do it together and get ready to show off our smarts on Chinese culture!篇3Chinese Cultural Knowledge CompetitionHi friends! My name is Lin Lin and I'm 10 years old. I go to Sunshine Elementary School in Beijing. Today I want to tell you all about the super cool Chinese Cultural Knowledge Competition that I got to take part in last month! The Chinese Cultural Knowledge Competition is a really big deal in China. It happens every year and students from all acrossthe country compete to see who knows the most about our amazing culture and history. The questions are seriously hard - you have to know sooo much stuff! But it's really fun to learn about all the incredible things our ancestors did thousands of years ago. This year, the competition was held right here in Beijing at the National Museum. When my mom told me I had been chosen to represent my school, I was sooo excited but also kind of nervous. I studied like crazy, reading books and watching documentaries about ancient China. My parents even took me to historical sites around Beijing on the weekends so I could see the things I was learning about in real life. Finally, the big day arrived! We had to get to the museum superrr early because there were kids from allll over China coming. The museum was decked out with red lanterns and dragon decorations everywhere. It looked so cool! We checked in, got our numbers, and then waited in the auditorium until it was time to start. There were three rounds to the competition: a written test, a quiz bowl, and then a final round for the top scorers. The written test was first. We had two hours to answer 100 questions about Chinese history, culture, myths, inventions, arts, and more. Somequestions were crazy hard, like "What were the titles of the two earliest classic novels written in China?" The quiz bowl round was like a big team game where you had to hit a buzzer super fast after the question was read. I wasn't picked for my school's quiz bowl team, but I got to cheer really loudly for them!Only the 15 students with the highest combined scores from the first two rounds moved on to the final round. I was sooo nervous watching them get asked all sorts of super genius bonus questions on stage in front of everyone. But they all knew sooo much! The top three winners got awarded these huge trophies and medals. I clapped so hard for them.Even though I didn't make it to the finals, I had an absolute blast at the Chinese Cultural Knowledge Competition. I learned a ton of amazing things about my country's rich history and traditions. Did you know China invented the first movable type printing? Or that gunpowder, the compass, and paper money were all pioneered by the Chinese? See, I'm testing you already! My favorite thing I learned was about the legends of the Monkey King. He was this massively powerful monkey deity with magical abilities who went on all these crazy adventures. The stories about him are just so imaginative and fun. Whenever I'mbored now, I like to pretend I'm the Monkey King using my cloudfy-somersault circlings to fly across the clouds! There's just sooo much incredible stuff to learn about China's past. I can't wait to hopefully compete in the Chinese Cultural Knowledge Competition again next year now that I know what to expect. I'm going to study even harder to make it into those finals! Wish me luck, friends!篇4The Chinese Culture Knowledge Competition is So Cool!Hi friends! I want to tell you all about this super awesome competition called the Chinese Culture Knowledge Competition. It's a really fun way to learn about the amazing culture and history of China. Get ready, because I'm going to share all the exciting details!First of all, what exactly is the Chinese Culture Knowledge Competition? It's a big event where students from all over China (and even some other countries too!) come together to show off how much they know about Chinese culture. Things like ancient traditions, famous philosophers, poetry, art, inventions, you name it! If it's part of China's rich cultural heritage, you can expect questions about it.The competition has different rounds, kind of like leveling up in a video game. In the first few rounds, you answer multiple choice questions on your own. Then the later rounds have team competitions where you work together with your schoolmates to solve tough challenges. The finals are the coolest part - the last few teams get to go on stage and battle it out live in front of everybody! Can you imagine how nervous but excited they must feel?To get ready for the competition, you have to study really hard. I'm talking books, documentaries, museum visits - anything to soak up as much knowledge as possible about China's amazing 5000 year history of culture and accomplishments. My favorite things to learn about are the Four Great Inventions that came from ancient China - the compass, gunpowder, printing, and paper making! How awesome is it that thoseworld-changing inventions started in China so many centuries ago?Another topic I find fascinating is Chinese philosophy and the teachings of wise men like Confucius, Lao Tzu, and the emperors of different dynasties. Their ideas about virtue, harmony, and proper behavior still influence Chinese culturetoday. I could spend hours talking about the depth of their wisdom! Then there are the rich artistic traditions like calligraphy, painting, poetry, music, martial arts, and more. Did you know that things we think of as so modern like paper folding originated in ancient China? Mind-blowing! And let's not forget about the mouth-watering cuisine with its diverse regional flavors. I may be biased, but Chinese food is definitely the best food in the world!Participating in the Chinese Culture Knowledge Competition has taught me that China's culture is just endlessly fascinating. Every time I learn about something new, like the symbolic meanings behind dragon imagery or the legends of mythical beasts, I get so excited to dive in and understand more. The competition is basically an epic adventure into the depths of Chinese cultural wisdom and heritage. You get a chance to appreciate the amazing accomplishments and beautiful traditions of one of the world's oldest civilizations. Plus, you can meet fellow students from across the country who share your passion for this incredible culture. What could be cooler?Whether you make it all the way to the finals in Beijing or just participate at a local level, the Chinese Culture KnowledgeCompetition will leave you stunned by how much there is to discover about China's brilliance. Mark my words, once you start soaking in all this knowledge, you'll be hooked for life! I know I am.So what are you waiting for? If you ever get a chance to join the Chinese Culture Knowledge Competition, do it! It will blow your mind with how much you can learn. You'll walk away with a new level of respect and appreciation for the lasting cultural legacy of China. Just get ready to have your brain filled up with more fascinating facts than you ever imagined possible. Trust me, it's an adventure you won't want to miss out on!篇5Chinese Cultural Knowledge CompetitionHi friends! Today I want to tell you all about this super cool competition called the Chinese Cultural Knowledge Competition. It's a really fun way to learn about the amazing culture and history of China. You might be wondering, what exactly is cultural knowledge? Well, it's all the interesting stuff about a country's traditions, customs, arts, food, legends, and more! The Chinese culture isone of the oldest and richest in the world, with over 5,000 years of history. There's just so much to explore and discover. The Chinese Cultural Knowledge Competition tests how much you know about all these fascinating cultural topics. It's kind of like taking a really fun test, but without any pressure or grades. Just you showing off your smarts! The competition has different levels too. The lowest level is for little kids like me in elementary school. Then there are higher levels for middle school, high school, and even adults! No matter how old you are, you can join in on the cultural fun.So what kinds of things do they ask about? Let me give you some examples:Chinese festivals and celebrations (like Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, Dragon Boat Festival)Ancient Chinese legends and fables (maybe you'll learn about the tradition of moon cakes or the myth of the dragon!)Chinese arts and crafts (calligraphy, paper cutting, pottery, you name it!)Chinese philosophy and famous thinkers (like Confucius and his golden rules)Chinese traditions and customs (things like drinking tea ceremonies or delivering red envelopes)There's just so much cool stuff to learn about the culture. I really like the parts about ancient Chinese inventions and discoveries too, like the compass, gunpowder, paper, and printing. Chinese people were super smart way back when!Preparing for the competition is half篇6My Favorite Thing - The Chinese Cultural Knowledge Competition!Hi friends! I want to tell you about my absolute favorite thing in the whole world - the Chinese Cultural Knowledge Competition! It's this really cool contest where kids like me get to show off how much we know about the amazing culture and history of China. I get super pumped every year when the competition comes around!First, let me explain what the Cultural Knowledge Competition actually is. Basically, it's like a huge tournament where students from all across China answer tons of questions testing their knowledge of Chinese culture, history, traditions, and more. There are rounds at the school level, then the city level, then the provincial level, and finally the national level competition in Beijing for the best of the best students! The questions cover all sorts of awesome topics from ancient China all the way up to modern day. We have to know stories and legends from long ago, like the epics of heroic warriors, tales of mythical creatures, and the adventures of legendary leaders and thinkers. We learn about the four great inventions that came from ancient China - the compass, gunpowder, printing, and paper making! How cool is that? There are also questions on important philosophies and belief systems that originated in China, like Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Talk about some deep ideas for a kid to understand! I had to spend hours studying the teachings of thinkers like Confucius, Laozi, and the Buddha. My brain definitely got a workout from all that heavy stuff. But it's not all just ancient history - the competition also tests our knowledge of more recent events, customs, arts, and achievements too. We learn about famous modern Chinese inventions, the cultures of China's many ethnic minority groups, traditional arts like calligraphy and Beijing Opera, and so muchmore. There's always new and fascinating things to discover about China's rich heritage. My favorite part, though, is definitely learning about the incredible natural wonders and breathtaking landscapes across China. From the soaring peaks of the Himalayas to the serpentine bends of the Yangtze River, the picturesque karst hills of Guilin to the legendary waterfall of Huangguoshu, China's natural beauty is just mind-blowing. Studying all the amazing places makes me want to be an explorer when I grow up and travel everywhere!Preparing for the Cultural Knowledge Competition is no joke - it takes tons of hard work and dedication. But that's what makes winning so rewarding! I have to read through piles of books, watch educational videos, and take loads of practice tests. Sometimes my brain feels like it's going to explode from trying to cram in all the facts and details. When the actual competition day arrives, I get a mega adrenaline rush. My palms get sweaty, my heart races, and I can hardly sit still as the questions start rolling out. It's an intense battle of wits against rivals from all over who are just as determined as me to prove their cultural knowledge mastery. I have to rack my brain at lightning speed, fighting to rememberevery last bit of information I've learned over the months of studying.Sometimes the questions are brain-busters that stump me at first, like, "Name the four ancient Chinese inventions that were considered to be the greatest technological ad。

2003年全国大学生英语竞赛初赛试题翻译部分Part VI Translation(10 minutes,10 points)Directions:Translate the underlined sentences of the following passage into Chinese on the Answer Sheet.TASTE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCEWherever you are in the world,it seems, the billboards and supermarket shelves are saturated with the same brand names. There are few places left on the planet where you can't buy a Diet Coke,a packet of Kellogg's cornflakes,or Oxo cubes. But just try tasting them.(101)The packaging and the product may look identical, but the flavour maybe far from familiar.Even the most famous brand names are specially for-mulated to appeal to individual national palates.Heinz, for instance, insists that its tomato ketchup is“the same recipe worldwide”,but admits that“there maybe very subtle variations in the spicing”.Even the ultimate global brand,Coca-Cola,accepts that not all its products are what they appear to be.“We go to great lengths to ensure that Coca-Cola is the same wherever you drink it,”says a spokesman.“But Diet Coke may change slightly from country to country, because we use different sweeteners in different places.”Americans prefer many products, particularly chocolate,to be far more sugary than Europeans do.(102)The French perceive strawberry flavour in a different way from the British,so the artificial flavouring in France will not have a“proper”strawberry taste to Britons.Preferences for saltiness and color differ as well, and most Japanese consumers dislike the taste of milk. The French in general prefer stronger,fuller-tasting coffee than the British. There is a higher cream content in a Magnum in Italy than in Britain, because the Italians expect ice-cream to have a much richer taste.Tea sold in Europe tends to be weaker than the strong tea preferred by Britons.(103)Taste preferences can vary even within countries:at least one well-known soft drink is made according to a sweeter recipe in the southern states of the United States than that on sale in the north.Local water and soil will affect the taste of home-grown natural ingredients. Some key constituents may not be available, meaning that alternatives must be found.Sometimes, especially in developing countries, premium grade components, such as high-grade flour, are replaced with lower-quality equivalents.(104)Extremes in climate will require different additives and preservatives to be used.Chocolate calls for an alternative recipe in hot countries if it is to maintain its texture and taste. And multinationals must conform to national laws and regulations on additives, flavorings, colorings, and artificial low-calorie sweeteners.Mars and Snickers bars taste slightly different in Australia, since laws there state that vegetable fat must not be used in chocolate.Local religious sensibilities must also be observed.(105)Even McDonald's,which proclaims the homogeneity of its Big Macs(巨无霸)around the globe, has to serve lamb rather than beef burgers in India, because the sacred status of cows means thatthe majority of its Indian customers can't eat beef.Part VII Writing(30 minutes,20 points)Directions:The chart below shows the amount of leisure time enjoyed by men and women of different employment status.Write a report for a university lecturer describing the information shown below. You should write at least 150 words.Leisure time in a typical week:by sex and employment status,1998-99Part VI Translation (10 points)101.
